Pro Day: Colt to undergo hip procedure

CARSON, Calif. — Colt Brennan will undergo surgery Monday to repair what he describes as a "slight" labrum tear in his right hip. It is a soft-tissue injury and not cartilage damage.
The rehabilitation period is between eight and 12 weeks, after which he will be fully healed and will not need additional medical procedures for the injury.
"Right now, I'm not 100 percent," Brennan said. "What I will be in July is 100 percent.'
He said he considers the injury to be "minor" and it would not be an issue if he were already on an NFL team. He said health concerns are heightened in regards to draft prospects. He also noted that Priest Holmes had a record-setting season after undergoing a similar procedure.
Brennan said he suffered the injury during a Senior Bowl practice in January. He said it led to what he termed as a "dead leg" effect in his right thigh.
The injury did not prevent him from working out at the NFL Scouting Combine last month nor from competing in today's Pro Day in Carson.
Brennan said he was only told recently that he would require surgery. His agent, Bruce Tollner, said there was some debate whether to release the information. But it was Brennan who insisted on notifying National Football League officials. The 50 or so scouts attending Pro Day were told of Brennan's condition right before the weigh-in session. Each received a letter detailing the chronology of Brennan's injury and treatment.
"I didn't want to hide anything," Brennan said. "I wanted to be honest."
Under the direction of San Francisco 49er quarterback coach Ted Tollner, Brennan threw for about an hour today. He did not participate in the running or weight-lifting drills.
Brennan was accurate on passes of all ranges, Tollner said.
"There's no question he can play at the next level," Tollner said. "He can make all of the throws."

• Brennan weighed in at 218 pounds.
• Offensive lineman Hercules Satele bench pressed 225 pounds 40 times.
• Slotback Ryan Grice-Mullins ran 40 yards in 4.33 seconds. Cornerback Ryan Keomaka ran the 40 in 4.35 seconds. Slotback Davone Bess "tweaked" his right hamstring. He was clocked as fast as 4.59 seconds, despite slowing down after 35 yards. Karl Noa also suffered a hamstring strain running the 40. Wideout Jason Rivers admitted to suffering hamstring tightness.
The leg injuries were attributed to the cool and windy conditions.

In two sources looking for when the pro day starts,written by the HA staff, not once was there any mention of the start times.In one article ,in the first paragraph,Brennan and co etc.participating in pro day,they "had participated",which doesn't make sense.Why is it hard to put in the article the start times of the pro day?

How observant am I? Look at the archives.The day after day Sugar Bowl game,I commented that when Colt was running back to the huddle I noticed how his right leg didn't look right.In fact I said his leg looked liked it buckled.

haka-I know the senior bowl was on the 26 but sometimes I regret writing the things that I see- me writing about my hunches,relating to the sugar bowl game and after thinking that if what I write can hurt his chances then maybe they should delete my comments. When I see something good,I keep a mental score card.And I knew from the past when I saw this writer write political/government type articles I though he did quite well.At that time I started to keep a mental score card.And more and more that name popped up I kept remember that name.Today I was reading another of Stanely Kaneshiro's artilces in the sport's section detailing the new schemes,etc with the QB under center.And I thought it was well written.Compared to Ferd I think Stanley is a much deserving of a column.Not only are their a huge differences in writing styles,you'll see that SK writes and supports his writings with greater substance.

The 40s are all hand-timed.
But they're hand-time by the scouts, so those are the numbers they'll use when the compile reports.
Rivers might have tweaked his hamstring on a pass route.
By the way, it's kind of chilly. Low 60s or high 50s. That might be why the players are having leg problems.

I had a major static AM radio experience this morning on the drive to Lihue, straining to hear 1420 and the interviews from Carson. Miano was great - providing the stats and the amazing accomplishments - and the owies. Colt has not only buffed out but also is speaking like an announcer- great modulation in the med range, without his usual hyper- speak-with- like-pauses. I had to wait to hear BC speak his name to be sure it was Colt!

Ted Tollner is a pretty good QB coach, good to have him running the drills. (Wasn't crazy about him as an offensive coordinator, but he's a good QB coach. Been in the business for a long time.)
I don't think the torn labrum hurts him much, since it's a "slight" tear. As long as everyone knows it's the right hip and not the right shoulder.
4.59 for Davone with a "tweaked" hamstring... I'd have to see the tape to see how badly the tweak affected his time. Davone's stock has plummeted since the Combine because of his 40 time, so he needed to run something good. If the tweak clearly bothered him, the scouts might shave a few hundredths off that time. But a 4.59 handheld, that's not good. You usually add anything from a few hundredths to 0.24 when determining a "true" 40 time.

Godspeed to Mr. Brennan and the procedure for his labrum tear. Isn't there a labrum socket for the shoulder as well? Hope the doc' repairs the labrum in the correct torso, yuk yuks (hey, it IS 04/01 ain't it?).

I have always liked Sonny Jurgensen, who was the QB for the Washington Redskins years ago. He resembled me - not in athletic ability but the fact that he would waddle like a penguin, pot-bellied and would throw the football like a dream.
Colt doesn't look that bad - and he'll be OK. Wish him the very best now and in the future.

Reading various reports on the Internet about Colt and his injury, seems like the consensus from everyone else is that Colt's stock is going to plummet. I don't think it should, but that's the talk right now. Some are even venturing so far as to say Colt might not get drafted at all.
I'd compare Colt to Marc Bulger — a guy who should be drafted much higher than he will, but for whatever reason will drop to the late rounds. I mean, if you go back to 2000, that was a really weak QB class. NFL Draft Scout (who usually does a decent job) actually had Bulger graded as a 3rd round pick, yet he dropped to the Rams in the 6th. See the similarity?

I just got off the phone with Rich. I read to him some of the comments from the report that Jason posted a link for, and he had some corrections....
He said that it wasn't Davone catching everything in sight, it was CJ. Davone was the one who couldn't run routes because of his hamstring. He said that Jason looked a little slow, and Ryan did well, but that CJ was the star of the day. The person running the drills said Colt threw well and had a "lot of velocity on the ball".
He also said that he saw some of the defensive drills that were going on. Mostly footwork. He missed all of the running, lifting, and weigh ins. Leila was shooting lots of video - so she can post individual videos of each player - and Stephen seemed to be everywhere at once.
He also talked with Colt's parents and UKU@la there, and got to meet Coach Mack and Colt's agent.
I wish I could have been there!!!!

I sincerely beleive after his Hula Bowl performance, that Michael Lafaele is going to surprise everyone with an NFL career. I don't know if he will go as a draft choice or free agent...but I sincerely think he will have longevity.

Lunch time at work for me. Using the older Safari 1.3.2 and I thought the blue background bleed-through problem was fixed. Then after a reload, it was back again. SO rule out version of Safari as the culprit (problem with the latest version 3.1 SUDDENLY appeared last night).
The reload stalled with two "cannot connect to database" errors before finally reloadiing and the color problem resurfaced. Of course the reload took so long there could have been a new version of the blog server software installed for beta-testing in the interim....

Great information here on the Pro Day. Looking forward to the next update.
If the surgery is April 7 and recovery 8-12 weeks (assuming the longest), it would be around early July when Colt would be ready. This would give him approximately 2-weeks before most NFL training camps start. So I don't think his stock will drop that much in the draft. Based on what I've read the surgery very simple and I he should recover quit well. {Praying}.
As long as he can be in camp when it opens, I think he will be fine.

Go CJ! He couldn't get that "extra year" at receiver that JJ wanted due to team demands, but I always knew he has every bit as much talent as the other Fab Three WRs (not to mention speed). Thanks for the scoops Ronnie (by Rich, you mean Miano?)
As for Colt, I guess that was the "hip pointer" problem he had. Hopefully no one will hold the "passing only" drills against him, though I can understand his draft stock suffering a little due to the surgery deal. I wonder if the mainland media/bloggers/haters etc. will make any hay of Colt's suddenly announcing he won't due any of the other drills because of his recently disclosed injury.

A-House, Abe arrived with a 5 hour delay. Then had to deliver his videos of the Aloha drama inflight and in Orange County to KITV and KGMB. Robert Kekaula was like a thoughtful "big brudda" to Abe last night discussing Abe's Mainland track team tour to California, and his future college decision. Input from him and others, especially Tsaikos, really helps Abe have a wider perspective of the bigger picture, and the far off future. Guy Hagi at KGMB also took some time, sharing some thoughts that also really hit home. So from last nights and this morning's two station broadcasts, Abe earned enough money to pay for his Senior Prom. If KHON and KHNL joined in, maybe we could have covered his Punahou tuition.

las vegas, re: "Error establishing a database connection" — I've been getting a lot of that too. Took 10 minutes of tries before I could even get into the blog just now. Gonna send our tech guys a note. Hope they don't shoot me.
The other night when I couldn't establish a connection for an hour, on one of the tries I once even got a "Forbidden" message! Woo hoo!

BTW, I clarified Colt's injury. I think some wondered if he had a cartilage damage. The labrum in the hip, as I understand it, is a soft tissue. So there's a tear. But it still requires eight to 12 weeks of post-op rehab.

Just heard that Hawaii might get this kid from New Zealand name Sloof Lipra, who is a top rugby player. The Raiders were interested in him because the guy is a animal. Opponents are scare of him because of the way he hits. Only problem on the Raider blog was that he has some mental issues, which would make him a perfect fit there. However, he mentioned he likes Hawaii because of the weather, girls, and health care he can get there.

I heard the blog was getting better....a bit more readable, but still need the reading glasses w/o increasing the text size in the IE window.
Anyway, a couple more notes from Pro Day that I haven't relayed to ST.
Afterwards, I was standing on the sidelines and Terry Brennan was a few steps away. Coach Tollner came over to TB and told him that Colt did a fine job. He commented on how the ball had so much velosity on the release (although I was concerned with a lot of wobbly passes, but still had zip on them) and Colt's footwork simulating taking a snap from under center. Colt over-threw several passes, but they really weren't his fault. Like Stephen noted above, the weather was cold and the guys were cramping up, thus preventing 100% all-out routes. CJ was awesome today. If the ball was anywhere in the city of Carson, he grabbed it. Colt was told to throw high and low passes, in front and to the back shoulder, right & left routes, short, slants, posts, come-backs, etc. Every possible throw from 3, 5, 7 step drops, play-option, scramble right, scramble left, etc.

I also introduced myselft to Coach Mac and congratulated him. Asked if he was still planning on attending June's Kona golf tournament, and he said yes, and that HIS tournament is the following two days on either Maui or Kauai. June will participate in Mac's tourney, and then they're off to Samoa. Hmmm....battling each other for recruits?????

We should all appreciate the hard work that Stephen & Lelia contribute. They flew red-eye all night, headed to the stadium, shot video & got interviews, went back to the hotel to write, edit & upload tapes and return to HNL tomorrow. Thank goodness one of them is young. BTW, I was a little concerned when I saw Arizona plates on their rental car. Perhaps that's where it will end up being returned after a few wrong right turns to I-10?
Lelia mentioned she had 20 videos to cut. While walking back to the car, ST was on the phone dictating players names, times, etc., presumably to someone back in HNL for an update on the website. I tell you, they work hard!

Colt is really trying hard to be a right-on, straight-up kinda guy by being honest about his medical condition. He deserves a chance to play in the NFL. (Niners!) Glad he could play at UH & learn more than football. Hopes high for all of the guys getting picked up by teams. Love them Warriors.

homey: It's not so much that Rivers' stock dropped, as much as he's never given a reason for it to rise. I graded him out as a 4th or 5th rounder, but he had the ability to get as high as 2nd or 3rd round if he ran a blistering 40 time. The fact that he didn't run a good time at all drops him down to the 6th or 7th, maybe even FA. And what I'm more worried about are the reports saying he's high out of his breaks, not keeping his base centered, stuff like that. He's got good size, but he's not 6-4, so scouts are going to look at body control, the way he distributes his weight when he runs, etc.
I can't emphasize enough how deep this draft is with respect to WRs; most years, the top three would get drafted, guaranteed. This year, who knows, it might just be one. The difference between getting drafted and being a FA pick-up, this year, is going to be speed, speed, speed — and Davone and Jason hurt themselves really bad with their 40 times.

Liz Kauai -- I can't complain the "side" colors being blue... whole screen is blue except for the advertisements and the links are dead.
I am using Safari 3.1 and earlier today Safari 1.3.2. Both were working fine initially and the HA main page looks "correct". Just this blog has lost it's white opacity --became transparent.
Is there such a thing as a PC color virus that can affect a Mac?

I'm back on Firefox now. As soon as I posted my last message (using Safari), the blog refreshed itself and came back looking like the colors of the fields are reversed -- what is normally white is dark blue, and the comments are alternating white and the same dark blue as the rest of it! I tried refreshing again, and no change (except I see my message at the bottom). So I tried reloading the Advertiser's website, and when I got back to the blog, everything was fine, like it never happened.
So there's still some weirdness going on, at least with that version of Safari. Firefox seems immune. Don't know if this pertains to your difficulties...hope it helps somehow.

However, just to share in light of what day it is today... here are some things I pulled off at work today:
-I placed tiny post-its underneath everyone's mouses...
-I photocopied a paperclip, then took copies of that (about 10) and then placed those on the top of the paper stack in the copy machine so that when the next person attempted to make a copy they thought there was a paperclip stuck somewhere in the machine...
...

I collected quite a bit of those little paper dots from the hole punchers in the office and I will place them in my brother's ac ducts in his car, then set the AC to full blast and then turn the radio all the way up... while the engine is off of course.
When my brother gets into his car later and turns the egnition on he will be throwing himself a little ticker-tape parade.... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

i mean, you do use your whole body for throwing, but he should heal fine.
again, the coaches and scouts already probably have made up their minds. most rookies don't start their 1st year unless the team is that desperate. would be good to have him work his way up and learn the "system" and then be a super "soph".

I am finally back online...I had to stay away from everything to finish a lot of work so that I could take off 5 or so hours tomorrow for lunch. That is a *long* lunch break, but the company (as always, though this one may be more special than normal) is worth it.
My boss foolishly told me to make a technical breakthrough before I could post again. After banging my head against the wall (or staring at the MATLAB code) all day, finally something popped into my head. And it works!

Colt's weight gain is amazing...without the stress of the season and the demands of school and the public, he really was able to change his body. I'm sure that the weight gain was helped along by the injury, as he couldn't work out like he wanted.
It is great that he was able to throw so well despite the injury. That workout and the Senior Bowl passing exhibition should stick in the head of some NFL scouts.

It was great to hear that CJ had a great day today. He has the least amount of film for the scouts and really only 1 year at WR that they will care about, so he needed to wow people to get their attention.

Yes but it has got to affect his footwork. Nice to hear that the San Fran organization is speaking fondly of him so publically tho.
Looking at Colt's pic of him getting measured and such it seems more and more like that his body type is not one that naturally fits into a 218lbs weight class.
I'm wondering if he'll have to keep working hard just to keep the weight on since he had to gain so much in such a short amount of time.
But I'm probably wrong and he'll eventually fill in. I think by the time Colt's in an NFL jersey he'll be at 225lbs.

Arrrgh....if it's not thing, it's another. My wireless at the condo has been snail paced. It's taken almost 2 hours to answer three emails. Slow, slow, slow....But, the bright spot was when ST called and complimented me on the line I wrote about CJ catching everything in the city of Carson. Getting a compliment from a "real" writer made this Jimmy Olsen proud....okay, back to spicy beef jerky & a green bottle.
BTW, there was some serious muscle walking around today. The one thing I really liked was the attitude of all the players. They were all willing to listen and take direction.

Al - I didn't really get to see too much of the DB's or linemen. I got there right as everyone was walking to a different secured area for Colt's throwing. Right after Colt was done, the DB's were doing some footwork drills. As I was talking to coach Mac, Jacob told Coach he'd see him back at campus.

Unkanesson -- that is exactly what happens (except I describe it as the white area losing it's opacity and becoming transparent so that the background blue takes over). Even the Names with URLs have changed to gigi's requested blue...
The thing is, Safari was working OK since this joke first started last Thursday and went south after Aarvman announced he fixed the font problem and was going to work on the colors late SUNDAY afternoon.

Good evening Tsaiko Nation, a cool evening tonight in Los Angeles as Carson was cool this morning as I was playing tennis where Serena and Venus Williams trained at our Anderson Park Tennis Courts in Carson, near pro day at Home Depot Center. I concur with the other bloggers on the work and dedication that ST and the Princess are providing. Hamstrings pulls in the morning weather in Carson happens frequently as I pulled mines 14 days ago. Takes longer to recover for me as 49 years and four months from 50 takes it's toll on strains and sprains to the body. taking german for only one year, your are doing well. To learn basic german is much harder than basic english, But once you get basic german down the rules and spellings are always the same and you just add words to you vocabulary, whereas english is easy to learn in the basics, but the deeper you get into it, the weirder it gets, There seem to be weird rules about spelling etc, and it is not following a consistant logic. I've learned english more by feel rather than logic or consistant rules.

Ted, actually I studied German for 1 semester, which is about 4 months. BTW, I lived on Pariserstrasse in Munich for 3 months 1969-1970. Froze my buns off, it was so freakin cold!
It was the intolerable cold weather in Munich that convinced me to move to New York City.

Pronounciation is another problem in english. So many words are spelled the same way, but often pronounced completely different. In german, if its spelled the same way, it's pronounced the same way, no exeptions. Plus you can take different nouns, put them together and make a new word that make complete sense, I like that one as a writer, lol.

OK, so we inadvertently posted an incorrect time for Grice-Mullins.
I take that back. It wasn't a wrong time, but it wasn't his fastest.
The way it works is the 50 or so scouts all have stopwatches. You have to stand next to a scout who will give his time for players.
But we have one of the two copies of what they're calling the official results.
We'll have all of the times, heights, weights, vertical jumps and, even, hand sizes in tomorrow's edition, which should post in a few hours.

This guy got 557,449 page views in March, so changing the value of his page views could really change his pay check!
