Rain, rain, go ... to Klum Gym

April 3rd, 2008
By Stephen Tsai

The Warriors were forced to modify today's practice because of heavy rain.
The offense worked on drills on the grass practice field.
But the defensive linemen and linebackers worked on pass-rushing drills for more than an hour in Klum Gym. (The defensive backs watched football videos.)
Because of the abrupt change in plans, defensive linemen Rocky Savaiigaea, Joshua Leonard, John Fonoti and Elliott Purcell ran drills in bare feet.
"There was no time to get our shoes," Fonoti said.
Meanwhile, the quarterbacks were flinging in the rain. "We actually did a lot of things," quarterback Inoke Funaki said.
The Warriors were scheduled to practice with shoulder pads for the first time this spring training. But head coach Greg McMackin said he did not want to risk injury by having a full practice in the rain.
McMackin said today's situation illustrates the need to resurface Cooke Field, which is stripped of the artificial turf. All that remains is the under padding.
Athletic director Jim Donovan said chancellor Virginia Hinshaw has designated Cooke Field as a high priority. If things go according to plan, Donovan said, the project might start this summer.
"I appreciate the efforts in doing that," McMackin said.

I thought the D-line were suppose to be the tough guys?

  2. gigi-hawaii ©:

Am I the only one commenting? Hiya!

  3. gigi-hawaii ©:

Hi rage! Hi ST! Too bad Cooke Field was not done when the Murakami Stadium was being fixed up. Might have been cheaper.

  4. James:

    AWWWWRIGHHHHT....Fourth...

Like I said on the last blog...maybe they should also see if it would be feasible to enclose Cooke Field as an indoor facility....

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  5. James:

gigi...I actually think that the company that did Murakami Stadium offered to do Cooke Field at the same time which would have saved on cost...but you-know-who was in charge of the Athletic Dept. at the time.....

  6. James:

Wreck...about Friday...maybe the others can order pupus prior to our arrival so we can eat when we get there...

  7. conflaboration:

Don't forget Stretch too. I think he said he was coming late- of course, he will be coming from Kintaro's... mmm.

  9. Hawaiianbod:

    Welcome back ST!

  10. Loa:

    Hey Stephen!
welcome back, thanks again to you and the gang for the great pro day coverage.

james - i remember the offer to cover cooke field but someone dropped the ball or was it the baton.

    morning gigi and rage!

  11. Loa:

    Howzit Hawaiianbod and Liz!

  12. rage777:

    Hola everybody!

I think the defense went in Klum because Coach Mack has a soft spot for defense. Didn't Klum use to leak also, does that mean it doesn't leak anymore?

  13. Bulla:

    Welcome Home ST,

that was a whirlwind trip wasn't it? good to have you back!

  14. homey ®:

    Hello people.

Such a lovely morning to be running on field turf...if there were field turf.

Anything new added to the blog today? Let's see...numbering looks same, colors look the same...website links status quo...seems quicker...old blog is not accepting comments...just another day in paradise.

  15. Loa:

whatsup Bulla - was your ear itchy yesterday?

  16. homey ®:

never mind, the blog just slowed down for me...

  17. homey ®:

I still can't get the blog to load with the Opera browser.

  18. homey ®:

gigi - I read some of your posts from the previous blog...you are WACky!

  19. Loa:

homey - was pretty fast just a little while ago? ie seems faster then ff

  20. homey ®:

Loa - IE is one of the slowest browsers out there!

This is a list from independent testing:
    1. Firefox 3.0 Beta 4
    2. Safari 3.1
    3. Opera 9.50 Beta 1
    4. Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1
    5. Firefox 3.0 Beta 3
    6. Safari 3.0 Beta
    7. Opera 9.26

    9. Internet Explorer 7

  21. Loa:

homey - no wonder, i using no. 8 and IE 6, time to upgrade

  22. ralvic:

    Good Afternoon,

I'm leery of people that say it might happen. Or it might start. And maybe I don't have faith in people that say Cooke Field is a high priority that might be looked into this summer.Putting your brains together it might be faster if you look at acquiring funds at the grassroots level, through private donations and support. To our illustrious former Warriors alumni in the pros, who have the resources to help, come and answer this writer's and fan's appeal. And immerse yourselves in the satisfaction that you can make a difference in people's lives.Coming full circle is a great feeling that many of us can never experience and aspire. But for the one's that can, I gracefully appeal to you to open up your hearts and help.

  23. gigi-hawaii ©:

huh, homey? Did I talk about the WAC last night? lol

  24. SteveM:

homey -- it's a secret that Safari is one of the fastest and most heavily supported (by 3rd parties like java and Adobe) browsers out there...Mac and PC versions. But right now, you have to really love blue if you want speed and everything to work. :(

Interesting info on Opera. I have not tried Firefox 3 beta yet. Should be OK.

    I'm at a work site today--surrounded by 56 Safari-using computers.
Well, back to work for me...

  25. gigi-hawaii ©:

It rained just a little in the Aloha Stadium area where I live but right now it is pretty sunny. Is it still raining in Manoa?

  26. al:

    loa....bulla's ear is constantly itchy.
you see he has a twig growing out of his left ear.
a twig of watercress in fact, which confirms the fact that he has water on the brain.

....and how did the water get trapped in that marble?

  27. gigi-hawaii ©:

as usual, Al isn't making any sense.

  28. Hawaiianbod:

    Good Afternoon Loa

How's the weather in Wahiawa today?.

  29. al:

no gg....all homey is saying is that you are wacky.

perhaps its one beck day today?

i tell you, you need to get out of that house. maybe join 24hr fitness.

  30. Esme:

I posted these near the end of the previous blog, so am repeating here:

    April 3rd, 2008 at 9:00 am

MAJOR STANDING “O” FOR STEPHEN, LEILA AND EUGENE!

    AWESOME PRO DAY COVERAGE!

I know, I’m a little late, but it was so busy yesterday that it was the wee hours before I had a chance to finally finish the last bits of that GIANT collection of stories, videos and photos. (Especially loved that photo of Colt, RGM, Bess, Rivers and CJ huddled — like old times.)

Thanks for working so hard to make us all feel like we were there.

  31. gigi-hawaii ©:

Mike Tsai, if you are reading this. I showed your Hike with Mike website to my daughter this morning. She thought it was very informative. So congrats on impressing somebody who is hard to please.

She is out hiking right now, where I don't know.

  32. al:

as usual the "whooossh!" has appeared today.

i am sure many others got that watercress thing.

  33. Esme:

ST, I posted this earlier, and Liz said she found a tidbit on Google, but do you know for sure?

    April 3rd, 2008 at 9:08 am

Can anyone clarify the relationship between 49ers coach Ted Tollner and Colt’s agents Bruce and Ryan Tollner? I sometimes hear them referred to as the Tollner brothers, and yet on more than one occasion I’ve read that Bruce is the son and Ryan is the nephew of Ted Tollner. Anyone know?

  34. gigi-hawaii ©:

Al, no Becks in the fridge so no Becks in gigi's tummy. I drink only on the weekend.

  35. Esme:

ralvic, I liked your comments in the previous blog about the Tsaikos representing at the morning practices. :)

  36. gigi-hawaii ©:

If Colt's agents are related to the SF coach, maybe he will end up a 49er? Hope so!

  37. al:

that's not true. there was a day recently that you had a midweek teetotaller.

so check your email so you can understand the watercress thing, i don't want you to think that i have begun to speak some gibberish.

  38. Garret:

Hi ST! Hard to imagine you were in SoCal yesterday...hope you got some rest last night and you will recover from your trip soon. I've done the red-eye + work all day/night thing and know what type of toll that takes. It was easier on me when I was the Princess's age...a decade or two later it is much harder to recover!

  39. Loa:

al - hey i got the watercress thing

hawaiianbod - not sure about Wahiawa but i bet its colder then other parts of the island

  40. al:

i don't think colt's stock will drop from this surgery issue. its been on a sharp incline since the sugar.

anyway, a team would be nuts to pick a brohm or ryan in front of him. colt may have a minor hip thing but the former two have a lot more to be desired in the skill level and mental aspect of the game.

  41. chawan_cut:

How long was H.Failure here for? How long did Cooke Field sit like that?

And look, JD is already on it hopefully by this summer. We should send the old turf and all the other garbage that HF left us to his forwarding address for his mail.

  42. Garret:

Hi Princess! Thank you very much for getting the video for us. I'm sorry that you probably had to get set up early while it was raining, but we really appreciate the videos!

  43. al:

i wonder what st and leila put in their jamba juice?

talk about a love for their job.
    mahalo all three of you.

  44. gigi-hawaii ©:

I usually drink midweek when I do not drink a Becks on a weekend. Gotta use em up!

I saw Al's email -- hahaha -- poor bulla and his provocative pose!

Rivals released their 2009 rankings. Manti is the top LB in the country!

Matt Barkley, a 6-foot-3 quarterback from Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA), leads the way as the nation's top high school football prospect. Barkley comes from a powerhouse school that produced Matt Leinart and Colt Brennan, but many, including his head coach, say Barkley is the best in the history of the school.

Thus far, 15 players have received five-star status. The top players per position are listed below:

Pos. Name Ht. Wt. School (Hometown)

QB: Matt Barkley 6-3 230 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA)

RB: Cierre Wood 6-0 192 Santa Clara (Oxnard, CA)

WR: Rueben Randle 6-3 195 Bastrop (LA)

TE: Morell Pressley 6-4 214 Carson (CA)

OL: Marcus Hall 6-5 290 Glenville (Cleveland, OH)

DE: Devon Kennard 6-4 283 Desert Vista (Phoenix, AZ)

DT: Jamarkus McFarland 6-3 280 Lufkin (TX)

LB: Manti Te’o 6-2 230 Punahou (Honolulu, HI)

CB: Dre Kilpatrick 6-2 180 Gadsden City (Gadsden, AL)

S: Craig Loston 6-2 193 Eisenhower (Aldine, TX)

ATH: Russell Shepard 6-2 183 Cypress Ridge (Houston, TX)

  46. Garret:

Interesting analysis of Paul Johnson's Flexbone offense...basically what UH ran when he was there.

As to whether it will work, I dunno - Navy's led the nation in rushing the the last three years and four of the last five under Johnson and finished in the top 20 in scoring offense in 2005 and 2007, but the academy's talent and strength of schedule makes for a iffy translation. To get an idea of how it works, though, you can check out this detailed breakdown of Navy's success against Notre Dame last year (of course, who didn't have success against Notre Dame last year?), or take the following summary by "Explainer" friend Tyler Sellhorn, a current high school coach who played in the Flexbone in his small college days:

To that, I'll only add that Navy led the nation in yards per pass attempt in 2005 and was one of the scant few teams in the country above nine yards per attempt three of the last four years, not because Johnson's quarterbacks were particularly good passers - they weren't, and with Josh Nesbitt and Calvin Booker vying for the job, likely won't be at Tech, either, at least right away - but because defenses were so woefully out of position after a couple dozen consecutive option runs.

  47. Garret:

Brett Favre may be coming back to play with another team? Maybe those rumors were true about how he felt pushed out by Green Bay's management.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre, who announced his retirement last month after 17 seasons, could be weighing a comeback with another team.

According to NFL sources, Favre's agent has quietly inquired with teams about their interest in trading for the three-time NFL most valuable player.

Favre, 38, has yet to give written notice of his retirement to the league or the players' union, although that's neither required nor irrevocable. It's also not uncommon for players to delay in doing so, particularly if they are not in immediate need of their pension money.

The league sources said Favre's decision to retire was partially influenced by his frustration that the Packers didn't make a more aggressive attempt to sign Randy Moss. The team twice had a chance to do so, first in spring 2007 -- before New England acquired the All-Pro receiver from Oakland -- and again this off-season.

Favre retired a day after the Patriots re-signed Moss to a three-year, $27-million deal.

  48. Garret:

George Mason's basketball coach just turned down Providence of the Big East to stay with whatever conference George Mason is in.

Well the last few days have been rough with Mason fans going to bed each night wondering if our head coaching position would be vacant the next morning. But never fear as Jim Larranaga has rejected the offer from Providence and will remain in Fairfax. The administration at Mason finally pulled the trigger and gave the Big L a contract extension through 2015. All of us can enjoy a sigh of relief and not have to worry about losing a stellar recruiting class or demanding refunds on next year's season tickets. The D.C. Sports Bog points out that the Big East is now 0-2 in the coach-luring sweepstakes, oh joy of joys.

  49. Garret:

Jay Cutler went after a teammate after the teammate was injured. Bringing up the teammates DUI just because he got injured seems unnecessary to me.

Whatever the rationale, Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler has seemingly decided to take control of his team. On Tuesday, the Broncos quarterback spoke at length on a number of topics, most pointedly wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who will be out until at least the start of training camp following recent surgery to his right arm after sustaining multiple injuries during a horseplay incident with his brother.

"He's not my favorite person right now," Cutler said. "I support him, but it's always something with him right now and you can't have that. It's disappointing. We wanted to get a lot of work in this summer and he was going to be a big part of that, but now it's up in the air when he's going to come back."

Marshall's injury was the latest in a string of misfortunes to befall the third-year player. Cutler said he empathized with his teammate but couldn't help but be dismayed with Marshall's latest setback.

"I've talked with him many times," Cutler said. "A lot of people have. I've probably talked with him more than most people. He knows he's running out of chances. This wasn't like his DUI or other stuff he's had. It was an accident, but still, stuff like that can't happen.

"He knows it and hopefully it's his last, but it's like I told him, 'They're going to quit giving you chances around here.' Hopefully this is the last thing we're going to hear about him for a while."

  50. Loa:

do you think we have a chance of signing Manti next year?
with Adam and Sol graduating, maybe he would consider?

  51. Hawaiianbod:

    Loa,

    oops!

sorry......i thought you reside in Wahiawa.

  52. Stephen Tsai:

It's weird. They fixed Klum, now they're going to tear it down.

  53. Hawaiianbod:

    ST,

    What's up w/Klum Gym?

  54. homey ®:

ST - Tear it down and then what? New Klum?

It would be weird (could use other words here) if they fix up this blog and then all of a sudden revert back to the old blog.

  55. homey ®:

gigi - your browser doesn't have a status bar? :?

  56. MeiLing:

    Mr. A-House,

You were telling me something about where you sit at Aloha Stadium...south end-zone? What section has a good view? Hawaii Bowl ticket prices posted, and I will be home then! Hurrah! Hopefully the team will be in a BCS Bowl game, but if not, they be home.

Forgot to include Eugene in the mahalos yesterday! Just got through the pics. Thanks for shooting them!

Suggestion for Feedback staff: When viewing the photo galleries, could you reduce the size of the headers on the page (there are no ads showing on the top-plz keep it that way), and add the directional links to the top of the photos. If one doesn't have a large monitor, you end up scrolling down to view the picture, then scrolling some more to find ">> Next" to go to the next picture. Mahalos.

  57. gigi-hawaii ©:

first Al makes no sense (til I saw his email pic of bulla), now homey makes no sense. What is a status bar?

  58. homey ®:

A-House - I'll be venturing to the Windward side on 4/11...got some business to take care of. How come no one mentions Pake's chinese restaurant? Are they not good anymore?

  59. homey ®:

gigi - I do make sense. It's just that you don't understand. Anyways, you mentioned that when you scroll over your name you don't see the URL on the bottom of your screen. Am I correct? If so, that means you don't have the status bar being displayed.

  60. ralvic:

    Good Afternoon

So I'm in the doctor's office yesterday. And I begin leafing through a Sport's Illustrated.I note the letter from the editor.Blah.The reader's letters to the magazine.
Again I think blah.I then begin to count the number of pages of advertisements-20 to the total number 70-and think that's a lot. Then I come across a football picture of a well known family in the football world.I didn't know too much about the son,Chris Long,a possible first pick in the draft.Up until reading the article I had no clue to who Chris Long was.So I'm looking at the picture-Howie Long, his father, his mother and Chris. Now let me tell you something besides the obvious-we can see where he ,
Chris, got his roots from, the father,Howie is a former Oakland Raider and hall of famer. And towers over the son Chris, who is 6' 4",and 275 lbs.But the mother is beauty-and in the picture she herself might be at least 6 feet.I read a little about the mother and she has a law background. So I immediate think that the parents would have to be so proud of their son,Chris. When you read so many stories about how sons and daughters take different paths than their parents, usually in some cases tragic,it's refreshing to read the story of how Chris Long aspired to follow in his father's footsteps.

  61. gigi-hawaii ©:

Ohhhh, now I see it! I tested the status bar with Garret's links and it works! I never noticed it til now.

  62. gigi-hawaii ©:

Thanks for the info about the status bar. I, too, didn't notice it before. One of my gripes for this new format was not being able to see the source of our chief intelligence officer Garret's reports. Now, I can see the source of Garret's information and then decide whether I want to link on it to view the entire story.

  74. homey ®:

gigi - erik shoji...you can google him.

  75. A-House:

    Mei Ling:

We have season ticket is Sec D, Yellow, in the south Endzone. Excellent seats to watch how a play develops - receivers running their routes, O-Line blocking, QB setting up, defense reacting to our play, etc.

Then, the best is food concessions are very close and so are the restrooms.

We sit in the same area as the Roberts bus drivers and have a ball.

  76. Mad Dog:

Eric Shoji made the All-State Boys Volleyball Team as a freshman and has continued his leading ways, including being named best defender and best libero for the 2007 FIVB Boys’ Youth World Championship. Eric will play for Stanford in 2008-2009.

  77. gigi-hawaii ©:

I googled Erik Shoji. Interesting that he graduated from Punahou whereas Kawika graduated from Iolani. Amazing family.

  78. homey ®:

ST - Typical yeah. So are you going to sit down with them and go over suggestions? I would tell them to keep consistency, look at the old format and work from there. That's the problem with IT and the users...no communication till after the fact.

    That's why I'm a security guard now.

  79. Mad Dog:

I believe Erik is the starting setter on the Punahou team this year.

  80. Kekoa:

Thanks Homey, I'm feeling quite secure at the moment because of your due deligence. Bulla keeps me safe from the tourists, and you deliver me from evil.

  81. BowsForever:

I read in the Sports Hawaii forums that Farmdog had a boot cast on today. When did he get injured?

  82. Ruggo:

Stephen, Princess and Eugene - Mahalo for all of your hard work in covering Pro Day.

Stephen - is Klum Gym due for demolition soon? When the "new" parking structure was constructed in the early 1990s, it was only "half" of the new structure - the second "half" was supposed to be in the area currently occupied by Klum Gym. At that time, there was not enough money to build a complete 1800-stall structure, so only "half" (900 stalls) was constructed. I believe the long range plan was to demo Klum and build out the remaining 900 stalls.

  83. homey ®:

Mad Dog - another good feature of this new blog is that when you type out the URL it becomes a clickable link. I hope they don't disable that feature.

They should also enable more font features like size, color, and font style.

We'd be having Tsaiko parties everyday. In fact, almost everyone could work for me and be millionaires themselves! Fun to think about how far UH has come in football. In 1995 (thank you SI vault!) UH was ranked #91 in the country. And look at this note:

WAC opponents were 5-0 in Aloha Stadium in '94

  88. Garret:

Some nice photos of the Warriors at Aloha Stadium here. One nice photo of Vili too.

  89. Garret:

For the old-timers, here is an article from 1970 about the Islanders. I remember going to some of their games when I was a little kid.

What's the best show in Honolulu? There's always Rikki, "The Girl Who Wears Nothing" at the Esquire Theatre. Or why not take in one of those delightfully dreadful Japanese movies like Goke, the Body Snatcher from Hell, or the latest adventures of Oichi, The Blind Swordswoman, a balletic Kendo flick where limbs fall like petals from a yellow rose? Eccch!

The perfect answer to the tourist blahs in Honolulu is a combo called the Hawaii Islanders. The name may be a bit prosaic, and the act runs only from 7:30 to 10:30 every night they're in town, but the minimum is a paltry $1.75. No drink costs more than half a buck, while the tourist interested in authentic Hawaiian cuisine (circa 1970) can get a full meal—from soup to nuts—for less than a dollar. The soup is saimin, a pork-noodle broth, the nuts are boiled peanuts, and the entertainment is classical—baseball.

Last week more than 60,000 fun seekers enjoyed the Islanders' Triple-A act, bringing the season's attendance to nearly 400,000, with seven more games to be played at home. Hawaii has already bettered by 100,000 its own league attendance record for 146 games that it set last year. Owners of many a major league team—the White Sox and Padres among them—would dance the hula for that kind of moolah.

  90. homey ®:

    Awesome video Princess Leila!

I'm impressed! It felt like watching a classic Samurai movie directed by Akira Kurosawa. The shoulder pads sitting in the rain, rain dripping from the pads and helmet, then a closeup of the raindrops...classic. I'm impressed!

  91. WreckinEyez:

    Gigi,

Funny, you only drink on weekends. I know it is hard to enjoy a nice cold brew when you keep leaving the house during the week.

    ______________________

    Homey,

If you were a boss and we were making the millions under you, would going to spring practice be "mandatory"?

  92. wes:

Practicing in Klum is a good idea esp to get the guys use to hot and humid weather. On August 30th...it will be "very" hot and "extremely" humid in Swampville. Don't ever recall Hawaii's climate getting close to what the Warriors will experience. Hopefully CMack will get them well prepared for that also!

  93. gigi-hawaii ©:

why, Wreck, do you drink all week?

  94. homey ®:

Wreck - Spring practice, Fall Practice, Tailgate, Season games, Bowl game, all voluntary mandatory. Meaning stuff like attending weddings I'll let slide.

  95. WreckinEyez:

Actually Gigi, Sometimes I go home and pour a glass of wine and just kick back.

I was working at the Honolulu design center's wine bar this past sunday and they had to change the wine bottle I was drinking twice... I really don't think I did all the damage, it just was that I was there every time it was empty so the guy blamed me LOL...

  96. homey ®:

ST - Just curious. Do you know if the other blogs have fewer posts/hits due to the new blog format?

  97. WJD:

Does anyone know what happened to Lopaka(Video guy)? Did he go to SMU? I always liked him. Nice guy.

  98. homey ®:

WJD - I think Lopaka Ornellas went to SMU.

  99. WJD:

Thanks Homey. Too bad, he was always a nice guy to talk to and came up with tickets even when was hard to get.

  100. A-House:

I decide to step out of my building and to my surprise who do I see? No, it's not homey; No it's not our almighty Princess Leila ( say hi to your mom for us ); but, it's Calvin from Kona who happened to be in my neighborhood on his way to see a client.

Nice to see and talk story with Calvin!

  101. homey ®:

Interesting info on the non UH players.

I think someone unlinked the video link.

  102. homey ®:

A-House - What building would that be? You work in Kona?

  103. Esme:

homey, you beat me to the punch.
I was just about to say: How come the video link doesn't ... link?

  104. WreckinEyez:

    A-House,

You get everyone over there neart your place, even the guy from the big island!? Next time Homey and I will have a BBQ right out side of your door so we can join the club... LOL

  105. James:

    Wreck...

Actually, A-House was headed for his daily workout at 24 HR when he ran into Calvin.....

  106. WreckinEyez:

James, you were there too!? LOL J/K...

If you did say you were actually there too I would flip...

  107. M:

Why can't they use the baseball stadium? Isn't the baseball team playing away this week?

  108. homey ®:

Esme - Looks like someone deleted the tag.

  109. James:

LOL...Nope...I'm still stuck in my office...haven't seen the light of day for a while now.....I'm starting to grow moss already..mwahahahahahahaha

  110. gigi-hawaii ©:

James, just as long as you don't grow watercress from your left ear like bulla! lol. Did you see his email pic?

  111. homey ®:

Esme - Looking at the source code again, it seems that the statistics for the non UH players were inserted between the coding for the video link.

  112. Kekoa:

Homey ~ I just got a visit from a Brink's home security salesman. Howz that for providence! You work fast Homes!

The guy thought I was Tsaiko when I came to the door LOL! I told him that I just talked to a security expert...I'm good. I'll call if I need back-up.

  113. gigi-hawaii ©:

M, are you back from Japan? If so, welcome home!

  114. WreckinEyez:

So you never showered either then? Why they working you so hard man! Is "growing moss" apart of your job discription? LOL

  115. James:

    gigi...I was there...live and in-person...mwahahahahahaha

Okay gang, gotta bet back to work....talk later

  116. M:

Thanks gigi, I'm finally back home after 14 days in Japan. We had to stay an extra day because JAL had problems with the airplane and we couldn't get on another flight so JAL put us up for the night in a hotel. Not a bad place to be stuck in.

  117. gigi-hawaii ©:

M, I hope that doesn't happen to us! We reserved the hotel for 2 nights only and if we miss one day, we'll be out of luck!

Hubby's colleague said his United AL flight to Japan got canceled and he had to fly out the next day, too.

    Horror stories!

  118. gigi-hawaii ©:

actually we are staying 3 nights, sorry

  119. homey ®:

gigi - That's not a horror story. A horror story is finding a decayed body under the bed of your hotel room. Check under your bed when you get there. Closet too.

  120. gigi-hawaii ©:

Homey, yeah, that would horrify me, too. For some reason I've been worrying all day that some burglar will enter my hotel room when I am in the shower and hubby is at the pool, and steal my purse!

What will we do for money!

  121. gigi-hawaii ©:

    and steal hubby's wallet, too.

  122. homey ®:

gigi - put your valuables in the hotel safe.

  123. gigi-hawaii ©:

Darn... I was hoping they were going to resurrect a new gym in it's place.

    Good Afternoon

I just looked at the yahoo home page and what jumps out is the piece about how tourists should expect to pay more to go to Hawaii. This is scary. And the public reading this will probably opt to spending money on cheaper vacation. The once mainland tourists looking at budget priced Hawaii vacations will go else where. This is not good.

Even the tour companies here, relying on ATA airlines in taking passengers on Las Vegas vacations would probably feel the pinch.I haven't read anything, yet,of how it effects the Las Vegas market. But I'm assume in the coming days we'll read more about how the Hawaii tour companies marketing Las Vegas tours might be forced to opt out, too. Not good.

    Good Afternoon,

I’m leery of people that say it might happen. Or it might start. And maybe I don’t have faith in people that say Cooke Field is a high priority that might be looked into this summer.

Past indiscretions give way to anyone's doubt, but thus far, Jim Donovan and Chancellor Hinshaw have not given us anything to doubt them on.

Besides I'm tired of being on "edge" when it comes to reading this about the facility issue.

To Kazz, You write as if your upset with me.Why? Do you read completely of what I wrote,or just the part where it seems like I have no faith in the AD or administration? I wrote ,in essence, that we get things done around the athletic facilities on the grass roots level,as witnessed by the acquiring of the softball bracelets, the building of the softball structure and the outfitting of the coaches office all done by the support of the public. The idea about cooke field was instead of waiting and hoping like we do in the past I was hoping and appealing that someone reading could donate. I don't think this is so bad.

  136. Kazz:

    Ravlic,

I assure you I was not upset with anyone here. I was just saying that anyone that may have doubts from anything we hear from admin can be justified considering the past.

Maybe what they are waiting for is indeed a donor to come through as I and many of us know that 100% of the funds for such a project can't be coming from any monies within a department already in the red.

That is all. If the way I worded things seem directed towards you and only you, then it is an error on my behald. That was not the intention.

  153. Garret:

I hope BSU doesn't get this QB...sounds like he'll go to U-Dub if they offer.

Jerry Slota is a mobile quarterback from Chaparral High School in Parker (CO). Slota runs 4.71 forty, is 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, and set to graduate in 2009

Slota is a former teammate of Husky freshman Devin Aguilar. The two were friends while playing together for Mullen High School in Denver (CO).

Slota is receiving attention from Colorado, Colorado State, Purdue, Boise State, Southern Methodist, and Northwestern in addition to Washington.

"I would love to get into a Pac-10 school," Slota said. "It would almost be a dream come true for me to get into a Pac-10 school."

Schools that Slota would like to hear from but haven't contacted him yet include Florida, California, Notre Dame, Utah, and Texas A&M.

Slota has taken a visit to Colorado State and expects the Rams to be the first program to extend him an offer. He said that he could commit to a school as early as this summer if he receives the right offer.

  154. gigi-hawaii ©:

Another horror story -- When I was a UH student, I parked my car on Dole Street. When I returned, it was gone! The neighbor watering his yard told me it had been towed. I had to walk all the way to the end of the block to see the tow away sign! I then called the taxi and went to the tow lot and paid a bundle of money to retrieve my car.

So, yes, parking permits were a necessity particularly if you lived far away.

  155. Garret:

Wouldn't it be interesting if Kevin Craft starts for UCLA this season (highly likely)...and UCLA ends up in the Hawaii Bowl (quite possible because their OL problems might drop them down to the Hawaii Bowl selection) against UH...

Q: What do you think of the chances of quarterback Kevin Craft actually winning the starting gig at UCLA?

A: Right now, his chances are as good as anybody's. Coaches are going to evaluate all five quarterbacks (Ben Olson, Patrick Cowan, Osaar Rasshan, Chris Forcier and Craft) early in spring practice, then thin the herd. Every indication I get is they like Craft and expect him to be in the mix. He was not just an insurance policy in case a quarterback or two transferred after the coaching change.

The quarterback situation does need to be resolved, though it may carry into August. But the offensive line is a greater concern. If UCLA doesn't solve that, the Bruins may need all five quarterbacks next season. After all, they needed four last season.

  156. Garret:

It is sad that LSU keeps giving this QB chances, even though he keeps messing up.

Ryan Perrilloux (pronounced perilous in Baton Rouge) assumes full-time command at quarterback for the defending champions provided he does not become involved in any off-field issues that involve alleged counterfeit rings, entering a casino using false identification or getting kicked off the team for not keeping up with his schoolwork.

    What, all that happened?

To rephrase, Perrilloux will still be starting quarterback next fall because winning football games is very important at Louisiana State and the only other options are a redshirt freshman and a walk-on transfer from Harvard.

  157. Garret:

LSU already booted the QB off of their Spring Practice roster.

Quarterback Ryan Perrilloux appears to be finished for the spring. He was expected to return to practice this week after a mid-February suspension was lifted, but he did not practice Monday and Tuesday.

LSU has one more practice before Saturday's spring game, set for 5 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.

"He has not fulfilled some obligations that were set by Coach Miles in order to return to practice," LSU Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette said. "He has not regained practice privileges and will not until he fulfills the requirements set by Coach."

Perrilloux started the spring under suspension for missing classes and team workouts.

  158. Garret:

Aside from skipping classes and team workouts, getting into legal trouble, etc., LSU's probable starting QB for the season had this latest incident.

LSU junior quarterback Ryan Perrilloux caused a scene at a local restaurant Sunday, the night before he was expected to rejoin the team for spring practice, according to a server who witnessed the incident.

A server at Kona Grill in Perkins Rowe told The Daily Reveille that Perrilloux arrived at the restaurant 30 minutes after it closed.

Perrilloux entered the bar and attempted to order drinks. After he was denied service, Perrilloux began to curse and use racial slurs, the server said.

A Kona Grill manager approached Perrilloux, who then cursed the manager. The server said Perrilloux was asked to leave.

LSU's head coach had to call the restaurant to apologize because apparently the QB didn't bother to apologize. The head coach was forced to apologize for him!

The server said LSU coach Les Miles called the restaurant to apologize for Perrilloux.

  159. Garret:

LSU writers are even calling for LSU to kick the QB off the team.

For the first time in the ongoing Ryan Perrilloux saga — and if the most recent allegations are true — I honestly don’t think the insanely talented/completely disobedient quarterback should be allowed to rejoin the LSU football team.

I, like many Tigers fans, naively believed the presumptive starting QB and former high school USA Today offensive player of the year would straighten up and fly right after he was suspended indefinitely Feb. 19 — his second suspension in nine months.

According to a report in The Daily Reveille, Perrilloux allegedly caused a ruckus late Sunday night at Kona Grill, located in Perkins Rowe.

After dropping a few curse words and racial slurs, Perrilloux was asked to leave. Perrilloux, feeling the pressure, scrambled from the Grill before the police arrived.

The audible probably saved Perrilloux a trip to jail.

All this went down just one day before Perrilloux was set to make his spring practice debut.

It has become clear this guy just doesn’t understand the position he is in and what he is throwing away.

Every guy on this campus would give up everything to line up under center for the reigning Bowl Championship Series national champions, to run out of the tunnel in Tiger Stadium with 92,000-plus fans cheering them on and to be the leader of a “damn strong football team” at one of the top programs in the country.

He has been given a second, third — and if he survives this most recent debacle, a sixth — chance to get right, but apparently football is not on the top of Perrilloux’s priority list. And if he doesn’t want to play football, LSU coach Les Miles should grant the selfish sensation his wish.

  160. g('nalo):

    g(’nalo),

Cheer up! Soon NONE of us will be able to remember that! (or where we parked, or what we ate for breakfast, or…)

    heheheh

    soon??!! for ME its heeeerrrree.........haaaa

D1 - have a good one, time for me to leave work

  161. Garret:

Apparently, the LSU QB, another LSU player, and 3 strippers made up the group at that restaurant. The slur used is also detailed here.

Another employee at Kona Grill confirmed Wednesday that Ryan Perrilloux was involved in a verbal altercation at the restaurant, saying the junior quarterback called a server “Osama.”

The employee agreed to speak to The Daily Reveille under the condition of anonymity and said the incident occurred Sunday around 10 p.m.

Perrilloux entered the restaurant with an unidentified former LSU football player and three employees from Crazy Horse Cabaret, the anonymous employee said.

He said the group sat in the cocktail area and began drinking. Perrilloux, the employee said, began yelling obscenities and racial slurs to their server.

After some time, the employee said, the server spoke to a manager and asked him to address the rowdy group.

Good evening Tsaiko Nation, Otto Klum gym brings back GREAT memories of some of the best basketball that was ever played on the Island of Oahu. GREAT players from Tom Henderson, Reggie Carter, Melton Werts, Wilt Chamberlain, Isiah Thomas, Danny Ainge, Tom Chambers and the GREATEST volleyball player during that time who died prematurely Miss Flo Hyman. The runs on that court TREMENDOUS with talent from local players John Kamana, Leroy Lutu, Richard Haneish, Jay The Bird Barthlomew of Hawaii Hilo and Big Will Pounds of Chaminade.

GREAT pick up games as players from all over will come to Klum gym to compete against the BEST talent and harness there individual skills. Fierce competition as you had to have game to play against the BEST talent in Hawaii at that time.

With Klum Gym eventually coming to an end it has been a wonderful athletic facility that not only had basketball as it's occupants but catapulted the wahine volleyball team to the CHAMPIONS that you see today. Gymnastics, Intramural sports, class registration and Recreational/Physical Educational classes were use through out my time and athletic elgibility as lower campus was known as the "quarry".

Time has moved on and Hawaii athletics has changed considerably over the years. On campus arena, Les Murakami Stadium and future upgrades for the Champion Warrior football team. It is all good for UH athletics as Otto Klum Gym will go down in Hawaii folk lore history as a GREAT athletic venue in which it housed many fine players and was packed with loud avid Hawaii fans to support the "BOWS" when ever or who ever they may play. Klum Gym I will always remember the home of outstanding athletic play "Thank you for your Greatness"! Sincerely, RainbowCliff.

To those who have been to Japan, what is the best flight airlines (flight, route)? I’ve checked and its so expensive so I figure I may as well choose the best route for Kevin. He’s headed to Osaka for a school year in August. Any suggestions?

Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines are tops!

  180. duffer:

    Hey LTUHF,

Hope I get to see you and the Mrs soon! :-)

  181. MeiLing:

Garret, thanks for the article about the Hawaii Islanders. I used to live down the street where Alan Wong's is now, and went to many a game. I remember being impressed when they annouced that on the opposing team, the three Alou brothers were playing. All brothers on the same team!

  185. d1shima:

    LTUHF,
    You right on.
    Raymond Elliott, 6-2
    Eugene Gill, 2-5

    How was the tailgating?

    heheheh

  186. d1shima:

    Yeah, Hawaii Islanders.

Wish they nevah get swept by Spokane for the championship.
Chuck Tanner managed a good team though.
Jack Quinn was a sharp guy. Bought contracts for ex-big leaguers instead of only relying on Farm teamers. Brought out the crowds man.
    Good fun stuff.

  187. Long Time UH Fan:

    Hi Jason,

Actually my memory cells are long gone...BTW, how are you doing in your Math 373 Statistics course?

  188. Esme:

    Hey, duffer,

Whyyyy you asking about Jenn Boneza?

Hmm. I haven't seen her in person or talked to her in about 10-15 years, actually. I could put in a call, but ... what would I say? ... "Hey, Jenn, a Tsaiko (she'll hear 'psycho') wants you to come to a party ..." That's when she'll call the police.

Just kidding. You really want me to call her? What would you want me to tell her?

  189. gigi-hawaii ©:

Mei Ling, you said you lived near where Alan Wong's is? I used to live in the house next to King's Bakery on So King Street opposite Wong's. My grandmother owned the house and the apt bldg next to the bakery. This was back in the late 1960s.

I remember the gong the Buddhist temple used to ring every morning. Did you hear it too?

  190. Jason:

It's not hard, the main complaint is that there's not enough time for the tests. We just had one yesterday, so we should be getting it back tomorrow. Didn't have time to think through the last page — I know the number I used for p wasn't right, but I couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be, and I didn't have time, so I just went with that value and did the calculations. I realized what p was supposed to be on the way to my next class. :-(

  191. Long Time UH Fan:

    Hi Duffer,

Wasn't that an emotional moment for you when last Aloha flight left OGG?

Mrs. and I thinking of another cruise; maybe to Mexican Riviera or inter-island. The for sure we'll stop by and hook up with you and Whitey. Right now everything is contingent on health of traveling friends.

  192. SteveM:

    d1shima -- Hawaii Islanders... ?
da termite palace. "Rocket" Rod Gaspar. The young Al Michaels moving on and being replaced by Les "ring-tailed howitzer" Keiter doing live broadcasts and recreations on radio. Tommy Lasorda (what team?) getting boo'd and people throwing bags of peanuts at him in the 3rd base box...and him calling time out to put the bags in his back pockets...

  193. gigi-hawaii ©:

haha Jason, that brings back memories. I took 2 stats classes - 1 in psych and 1 in ed psych. And all I remember how to do is mean and median. I forgot how to do Standard Deviation.

  194. Long Time UH Fan:

    Hi D1Shima,

Tailgating for us students at the old termite palace was zilch. Just whack one bowl saimin and one package boiled peanuts...that was it! :-)

  195. Jason:

Shh, don't tell my Math Team kids, but I can't remember stdev either. It's a class that's heavy on the calculator usage, so it's easy to just punch in the data and have it calculated automatically. Yet I always tell my kids I would try to discourage use of calculators in class. :-D

Oh wait, no, I do remember now. Never mind. ;-)

  196. gigi-hawaii ©:

We were not allowed a calculator in either of my stats classes.

  197. Long Time UH Fan:

    Hi SteveM,

Remember Bo Belinsky the former Angels pitcher who threw the team's first no-hitter and later was shipped to the Islanders . He made such a "hit " with the ladies too.

  198. Long Time UH Fan:

    Jason,

No worry; I'm confident that you'll come through Math 373 with flying colors.

  199. Jason:

I'm not worried, just mad I didn't realize the right value of p. :-)

  200. d1shima:

    SteveM,
How's about the Columbia in "puka" in right field? Wasn't it Carlos Bernier who hit one in it for the $1000.00?

    LTUHF,
    What? No frosty malt then?

  201. d1shima:

    sorry Columbia Inn.

  202. gigi-hawaii ©:

Columbia Inn -- hubby and I ate there once. Didn't care for the food.

  203. Long Time UH Fan:

    d1shima,

Nope, no more kala for frosty malt. I spent it all at Kuhio Grill...LOL

  204. Jason:

I should say, though, that Math 302 is kicking me in the ʻōkole. That's a hard class. We're working on second-order linear differential equations — the constant coefficient stuff isn't hard, but applications in damping, undetermined coefficients, and variation of parameters are tricky. Doesn't help that I haven't been keeping up with the (optional) homeworks, and the test is next Thursday... ;-)

  205. Long Time UH Fan:

    Hi Jason,

Yup Math 302 Differential Equations is a tough course; are you planning to take partial differential equations too? How many more Math courses are you planning to take?

  206. Jason:

Let's decide if I'm going to take 303 first, haha. Um, 8 more classes to go (plus Math 480, Senior Seminar), then I graduate. There are some classes under departments like Mechanical Engineering and Physics that might be interesting; I'll probably take those cause the Math dept doesn't offer a lot of upper-division classes at times that are good for me.

  207. MeiLing:

    A-House,
Thanks for the information about the south end-zone.

  208. gigi-hawaii ©:

Jason, are you minoring in something? Daughter majored in math and minored in history. I think that because of these 2 subjects, Phi Beta Kappa chose her to be inducted during her senior year. Quite an honor.

  209. Long Time UH Fan:

Jason, Good Luck! See you at a future CC or tsaiko gate.

  210. Jason:

No, but she got her B.A., so it's easier to work on a second major, a minor, or a certificate. Plus, getting another major/minor/certificate fulfills the "Depth" requirement, which fulfills the "Breadth/Depth" requirement for B.A. students.

I'm getting my B.S., which requires an additional semester each of Chemistry and Physics, and 15 more credits in Math or "appropriate non-introductory courses in the natural or information sciences."

  211. oldie:

    d1shima,

    Yeah, Hawaii Islanders.
Wish they nevah get swept by Spokane for the championship.

Wasn't there some kind of incident right at the start of the championship that made Lasorda going into a rage? Like, didn't we bean his star player? My recall is not that good.

  212. Jason:

That is, assuming the requirements are the same now as when she went to UH.

And the 15 more credit requirement is for the B.S. in math; the additional semester of Chem and Physics are for all B.S. students. Should have made that clearer.

  213. d1shima:

    oldie,
No can remember that. Just remember was a big let down that Islanders lost after such a big romp thru the season.
I think I recall that the regular series with Spokane was pretty eventful.

  214. MeiLing:

    GG,

I lived right where Alan Wong's is now. Behind the old storefronts: McCully Drugs (comics & candy), the fishing supply store, the barber shop. Across the driveway toward town was a florist & the original Taniguchi Store. My Goong-Goong used to bring home fresh bread in the morning from King's Bakery. Yes, I did hear the gong from the Japanese church across the street and the one behind our house. When family & friends wanted to go to the stadium, they would park in our driveway & in front of the stores, and we'd walk down to the termite palace. Boiled peanuts! Before 1970...

Nightey night...can't stay up to finish watching Miss Aloha Hula online. Yawn... Laters.

  215. Long Time UH Fan:

    d1shima,

How's your FHS class reunion plans coming along?

  216. gigi-hawaii ©:

Jason, are you in the honors program? Daughter decided not to join it because she didn't want the extra work and stress.

  217. Jason:

No way, I'd never be able to graduate in 4 years. They make you take all these extra classes, and then you have to work on your thesis. Math department doesn't even have a thesis requirement, you just take all your credit hours and pass with Cs.

  218. gigi-hawaii ©:

Mei Ling, I remember the drugs store! When my uncle visited from the mainland, he'd always treat us to as many comic books as we wanted. I remember picking love comics, but my cousins liked Archie and Batman comics. Memories,,,

  219. Jason:

When I was little, I won a box of comic books as a door prize at a party the family attended. I think my Dad threw them away, cause I never read them. I got angry at him, because I wanted to check if there were any rare ones in there left by mistake. ;-)

Looks like Wyoming took the 2-for-1 deal and filled Texas' schedule. So, in 2009 Texas will play for the first time at Wyoming.

Texas will replace its scheduled 2009 football game against Arkansas with a road game against Wyoming on Sept. 12, a source familiar with the negotiations said Thursday.

Texas plays Arkansas this September but, at the Razorbacks' request, will not return the game at Fayetteville until 2014 or perhaps later, the source said. In its place, Texas has agreed to a two-for-one arrangement with Wyoming with two future home games in Austin against the Mountain West Conference team.

Husband came home from work and caught his wife (who is a teacher at a middle school) having sex with a 16-year-old boy. He pointed his gun at them and told the teen to get out of the house. The husband now has several charges against him and I doubt the wife will get her teaching job back. If this goes to trial I wonder how the Utah jury would react...judging by the comments on the article, the husband might not be punished too severely.

    Howzit Tsaikos

Affter watching 2 days pracitce, this is my humble opinion and my suggestions to the coaches.

We gotta step it up some more. We play Florida only one time. Thats the vision. We got 4 and a half months to get ready for Florida. The team is doing good, they can do better. This morning, 4/3/08, at 4:49 am I saw Mr. Aranda go into his office. He was in the office before 5 a.m.. Obviouslyh, that man loves his job. Yesterday, I watched Rich Miano at practice. That man loves his job too. He talks the talk and walks the walk. Nick Rolovich, he talks the talk. I weant him to look great in the UA apparrel. Come on Rolo, you got some good prospects. I like the Austin kid. I like Graunke. I like Funaki. Watch the feet, how fast they are on the first step. That is the key. Watch that first step. You know the other teams are going to be watching their first step too.

No doubt we got great coaches. All the coaches talk the talk. But if we want to beat Florida, and I want to beat Florida, then we all have to step up to the plate. You know what I mean. The players not only want to hear the vision, they want to see the vision. From the top down. They don't want to see you eating breakfast with them, they want to see you bustin butt with them, you know what I mean? Not all of th em can follow direction. Some of them need the visuals too, not just the words.

I just love Coach Rich MIano. The guy is just super intense. So is Malloe and Aranda. And Gerke is a Marine bootcamp DI. I never got to really look at Coach Studs because he was way down the field, just as was Coach Rolo yesterday. But I saw Rolo today and he was gassing the QBs. Great job Rolo. Good man, good language. But Rolo too, you gotta step it up Coach. You can do it. We need you to lead the QBs as we get ready for Florida. You got the talent, and more is on the way.

The older, more experienced coaches, Cal and Ron and Mack, you are the mentors. Visual and verbal. Cal and Ron. you both got great game and great attitude, and you know what you're doing. But to me you are not ready to be like me, great speakers, great eater, you guys got game a specific mission. Not a 5 year mission, but a mission now. This yhear, 4 and a half months from now. Thats the mission, besides winning the WAC, graduating the players, etc. Not just a WAC championship. Thats their mission. I would like to help you change their mission to include specifically naming Florida as a part of the team's mission.

Come on guys, step it up!!!! I seen you. I believe in you!!!! ! LIKE RON SAID, SPRING PRACTICE IS HUGE.

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

PS: I met some great fans today. Mrs. Pestana, John Wilbur, Granny Pestana (Brashton's grandma_, Raiders' Coach Lofton. Hope more of you Tsaikos and represent and give our team the vibes.
And to my friend SJ Macro and Mavis, thank you for your kindness. i'll see you in a couple of weeks.

    GO WARRIORS.

There is a (comparatively) cheap Holland America from Lauderdale to Montreal on 5/4.

Problem is the cost from here to Lauderdale and from Montreal to Honolulu.

If you fly over there, Miami International is about 25 miles to the port and the Fort Lauderdale airport is a 10-15 minute drive to the port. UA flies to both - if they don't go out of business!!!

  242. Jason:

BHF2 has got me pumped up. :-)

    Jason,

Wonderful!! I admire anyone who goes into teaching. My Biostats I & II prof (not at UH) was probably the best prof I ever had. The exams were open book but we had to know what to test to use. Challenging but not onerous.

    I digress.
Gators#1 - are you local? or have you been lurking long distance?

  244. bighilofan2:

HEY QB ALEXANDER AND RAUSCH. Hope you read this. :

I didn't see the D work today because they were in the gym. But we saw the WR QB and RBs today. Some dropped balls because one particular receiver was starting to look ahead before he had the ball in his hands. IMO he needs to spend time on wrist strength but overall he is a great physical specimen. Salas looks really good today. Santos was letting the ball sail a little today.but he is strong. I'm pulling for him, he is listening to the Tsaikos and I appreciate that Mr. Santos. Kiran, looks like you still need more work to get back to 100 %. IMO your first step needs work. To me today the best 3 QBS were AUSTIN, FUNAKI AND GRAUNKE. I'm putting this in here because i want Rausch and Alexander to know you got your work cut out and I am hoping that Mr. Santos and the kanaka kid push themselves some more. But today I really liked Austin, and I'm sure the coach is watching the speed of the ball in flight too, and how fast that ball gets out of there.

This is the beginning of spring practice. There is much work ahead. Here's pulling for our team. I am sooo excited. GO WARRORS.
