Kate Robinson chat/Roberts, Silva move up

April 16th, 2008
By Stephen Tsai

Big thanks to Kate Robinson, star softball pitcher/first baseman, for taking time off from her busy schedule to visit with us. Not only did she provide witty answers, she also did her own typing.

Thursday's chat guest is Dylan Linkner, UH right wideout. The chat will start at about 10:15 a.m.

* * *

Cornerback Calvin Roberts and safety Mana Silva have moved up to first string.

"Mana is the first one on the practice field at 6, and the last to leave," associate head coach Rich Miano said of Silva, a Kamehameha-Hawai‘i graduate who transferred from the University of Oregon. "He's fast, and he finishes plays. ... We haven't done much hitting (in spring training), but he's big and fast. He's what Hawai‘i people are looking for. A safety who can hit."

Silva is practicing at strong safety. Keao Monteilh moved to free safety, a position he shares with Desmond Thomas. Spencer Smith is listed as the No. 2 strong safety. Dane Kealoha Porlas is out for the rest of the spring because of an injury.

Best of luck on your upcoming road trip!

Last weekend was the first chance I've had to watch a home game. How does our softball stadium compare with other WAC venues?

    Hi Kate!

Best of luck on your upcoming road trip!

Last weekend was the first chance I’ve had to watch a home game. How does our softball stadium compare with other WAC venues?

We have one of the nicest stadiums compared to other WAC teams-our coach and field crew spend lots of time upkeeping it. I know Nevada just built a new one and we will be playing in it for the first time this weekend--prior to that we played them at a park...Fresno has a very big stadium...but it's not my favorite place to play at.

  9. FloridaTed:

    Morning, Kate, welcome to Tsaiko-Town.

You young ladies have been very impressive as a team and with your success, fan support is growing rapidly as far as I can tell from here..

Question: Even though you've lost one of your best pitchers to Australia, what is your outlook for reaching the regionals again this year?

Best of luck to you and your team. It's fun following your team. You all seem to have have a lot of spunk.

How do you feel about changing dug-outs at RWSS?

At first I was skeptical mainly in part because of superstition...very few home teams reside on the first base side...However since they just build us our very own "clubhouse"...we've basically claimed the whole first base side as our own. The down side is that in the afternoon the sun shines right in our eyes, and we also have to cautious of right handers hitting foul balls into us--which i've experienced first hand. Another factor that worked into it is that i believe the Red Sox home dugout is on the first base side and that's where our coach is from. So it's one more thing he has in common with them.

  11. Kevin:

Kate, Nevada has been a thorn in your side, especially in the last two WAC Tournaments. With them now being a nationally-ranked team, how much of a "payback" mentality is there, especially since you're at their place?

Also, we've all heard the stories of how bad the Fresno fans can be in football. I've heard the same with their softball fans. How true is that?

I've had great pleasure in watching you and the team achieve success in the last two years. Mahalo and best of luck in this HUGE road trip.

  12. FloridaTed:

I'm always amazed at how many games a soft ball pitcher can throw vs baseball.

Question: Does your arm hold up better because of the underhanded motion vs overhead? What is the reason in your opinion?

It's great for Juz that she got selected us for the Australian Olympic team...however it did force us to change our game plan. This season would be much easier with her just because it would relieve the rest of the pitchers from a heavier workload. But softball is a game of adjustments. Our goals stretch beyond regionals. However our motto this year is take one game at a time so reach that goal. We have many solid players on our team that are filling the void left by her departure. It may not be as easy as it was last year...but we are going to do everything we can to go further than last year.

  14. FloridaTed:

Question: How is Bob Coolen as a coach and his relationship with all you young ladies?

He's been around for a long time and is just now beginning to get the recognition he deserves.

Best of luck for your upcoming and tough eight game roadtrip. Thanks again for sharing your time with us.

This Nevada series is huge for us. Your right for the last two seasons they have defeated us when it counted most. They play a different game--sort to say they play mental games with you in addition to softball. We won't settle for anything less than a sweep. They are going to be tougher this year because they feel good and confident because of their season but so are we. Fresno is a tough place to play. They have a lot of die-hard fans that at times can be distracting. I remember i went to the McDonald's across the street in my uniform-bad mistake-and about five people got their food before me who ordered after me and my food was cold. So it's definately a college town.

Our arms still get sore but we can throw more games and go longer. Underarm is more of a natural motion vs. baseball. But softball players are tough and can play through stiffness and pain.

Bob knows the game of softball extensively. Off the field he cares a lot about the team and does a lot for our well-being. It was difficult adjusting to his coaching style my first year mainly because the intensity level is way higher than highschool. But you learn to take his knowledge and use it to help you as a player. Bob and the players the last couple of years have really made a strong name for this program.

  23. Kazz:

From the student athlete's perspective, what is the general feeling regarding the current and future needs of the softball program?

Ah you are right my sister has signed to play next year. Many people think we are clones because we look similar, play the same positions...but personality wise we are very different. She's a very calm player i would say similar to me. I've seen her work very hard in highschool because she has been an impact player on her team. When you play in college you don't have to carry a team...you are a part of it because the other 20 girls are just as good. I'm exited to see her develop as i did these last four years. I hope she does well...she does think she's better than me...but who do you think taught her what she knows?

    Anyway.

What are your plans once you have graduated from UH?

This summer i will be playing pro-ball for the Akron Races in Ohio. I will then graduate in Fall 2008 with a degree in Business Management. I've always had this idea of owning/running a small restaurant/bar--i won't say my exact ideas until i put the plan into action but that's my general plans My dad is a chef and has said when i am done with college we could start looking into that.

    Kate,

From the student athlete’s perspective, what is the general feeling regarding the current and future needs of the softball program?

Our program has thrived from tough situations. We have had generous people contribute to our well-being and beyond. For the longevity of the program we need good recruiting. We need impact players who can come into the program and fill those who have left. That's the only way to keep the program on the map and in the top 25. This is hard when there is a constant juggle of scholarships and the financial aspect of attracting top players to any program.

  30. VBfan:

How many teams are selected for softball post season, since last years great run.

  31. Kazz:

    Kate,

We hear a lot about the recruiting process for football, but could you give us some idea of what the recruiting picture in softball currently is?

Like which schools are the biggest competetition for UH and if there is a lot of hosting involved with other players from the mainland or other countries.

It's been great. It's funny because in highschool we really weren't that close. We played on the same team and we were friends...but in college our friendships have grown. We have seen each other's lives transform through time. It's rare to have those kind of people in your life. I actually live with Lanz...never thought that would happen in highschool...it's amazing how friendships can grow and you can learn new things about people through sports.

Our team has many players that are academically strong. It's been a major issue to make sure our school work and grades are always there because when the four years are up that's what you get...is your degree--not a degree in softball. But of course keeping up with school can be challenging especially in the spring when we travel a lot. Professors have been very understanding and helpful in that aspect because it can be overwhelming.

    Mahalo!

Generally for softball if you are interested you send out videos or contact the coach. There are a few tournaments you can go which coaches flock to to pick up players. It's more difficult for us here in Hawaii because seeing a player in person that is not local means traveling to see them...which means it costs money. We do have a few recuits that come here on official trips in which they spend the day with someone on the team and get to know the atmosphere.

Despite growing numbers of men who are calling for male-only train carriages to avoid being falsely accused of groping female commuters, the railroad companies are simply waiting for the problem to go away, according to Weekly Playboy (4/21).

Recent disclosure of a spate of incidents where innocent men were accused of molesting female passengers has turned the national spotlight back toward commuter groping, a problem so bad most railroad companies have set up women's only carriages during peak travel times in the mornings and late at night.

The recent arrest of an Osaka couple for trying to set up a middle-aged man by falsely accusing him of fondling a woman train traveler has large numbers of salarymen shaking in their boots at the thought of being blackmailed by crafty commuters looking for a quick buck. This has heightened calls on railroad companies to set up sanctuaries where men can travel in peace, safe in the knowledge that they won't be accused of molestation.

Couple of things from yesterday's blog; one that troubles me a lot.

    1) I am truly dissapointed that someone from Hawaii would notify the NCAA of a possible violation when a "prospect" went to UHM to pick up his Mom who works there. Why would someone do that? Does he/she really HATE UH sports that much and will do anything to bring discredit to UHM? Did the "prospect" make contact with any of the Coaches? He/she appears to be very knowledgable of NCAA rules for "quiet times" where contact with possible recruit(s) in a NO, NO. What a shame!

Is the NCAA saying that my civil right to pick up my Mom is beneath NCAA rules? THAT REALLY SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

    2) With the good news that Jim Donovan's willingness to reduce ticket prices to attact more fans is a positive step, I hope his plan also includes "reimbursement" to fans who have already "pre-paid" for 2008 season tickets who sit in the "nose bleed sections" identified for reduced rates. I whole heartedly support his decision as I posted this idea many moons ago.

Leila - Would soccer be more exciting if they eliminated the offsides rule? Americans like to see offense, and in basketball a player is rewarded with an easy hoop by getting a pass behind the defender. In soccer, that's an offsides penalty. Or is that just one of those rules that *make* the game?

Back to football...thanks for the video!

    Hi, d1shima, howzit?

The sun is out over here, but we've got a sudden and unusal cold snap for this time a year. It's going down into the 40's at night. 15 degrees below normal. What happened to global warming? I'm more woriied about a mini ice age, if you study weather patterns over the last 100,000 years, thats far more likely. The last mini ice age, middle ages in Europe, was preceded by slight increases in temperatures, before it happened.

  76. Garret:

I like it when Colt is mentioned in this context. Excellent company...

Plant's Aaron Murray received the first invitation to the prestigious Elite 11 Quarterbacks camp this summer in California, Panthers coach Robert Weiner said Wednesday.

Murray attended the camp last season as an understudy, but now he will be able to showcase his skills with the nation's top quarterbacks.

"It's definitely exciting," Murray said. "I didn't know the invitations were coming out this early. It's quite an honor. I know the guys there well from last year. They know me and what I'm all about. They know what I can do."

Past participants include: Matt Leinart, Carson Palmer, Vince Young, Troy Smith, JaMarcus Russell, Andre Woodson, Chase Daniel, Colt Brennan, Chad Henne and Tim Tebow. In 2006, former Jefferson quarterback Stephen Garcia attended.

  77. Garret:

This Pro Football Talk guy *really* does not like Colt.

Colt Brennan’s hip injury could leave him undrafted. In my estimation, he is an overrated product of the system coming off a serious injury that could affect his future. Some team could take a late-round flier on him, but it’s possible he does not get drafted. I think Josh Johnson’s upside and playmaking ability are far more intriguing to teams than Brennan’s silly production in a spread offense.

  78. Princess Leila:

    Is this better?
I believe the offside rule was designed to prevent cherry picking, where a player would stand in front of the goal the entire game and just score. It's a hard rule to understand, but once you get it, you get it.

  79. Princess Leila:

Not to self promote, but you guys should check out, and then comment on Mouton and Monteilh's video. It's hilarious, and they make fun of Blaze....

  80. Garret:

Sporting News is not too positive either, but not as negative as Pro Football Talk. The Dallas Morning News guy doesn't even have Colt in his top 10, so at least here Colt is just a little behind Henne.

Colt Brennan, Andre' Woodson, Sam Keller, Erik Ainge, John David Booty and Chad Henne now figure to be second-day picks.

    1. Brian Brohm, Louisville, 6-3 1/4, 232, 4.69 (40 time). Grade: 8.0
    2. Matt Ryan, Boston College, 6-4 3/4, 222, 4.96. Grade: 7.9
    3. Joe Flacco, Delaware, 6-6 1/4, 237, 4.87. Grade: 7.5
    4. Chad Henne, Michigan, 6-2 3/4, 229, 4.93. Grade: 6.0
    5. John David Booty, USC, 6-2 1/4, 216, 4.83. Grade: 6.0
    6. Colt Brennan, Hawaii, 6-2 1/2, 218, 4.90. Grade: 5.9
    7. Erik Ainge, Tennessee, 6-5 1/5, 225, 4.99. Grade: 5.8
    8. Kevin O'Connell, San Diego State, 6-5 1/4, 222, 4.62. Grade: 5.7
    9. Paul Smith, Tulsa, 6-1 1/2, 208, 4.98. Grade: 5.5
    10. Andre' Woodson, Kentucky, 6-4, 227, 4.86. Grade: 5.5

  81. Garret:

Mel Kiper is winning this poll by a big margin. I wish that I could vote for "neither" or "Jason" in the poll.

Better NFL draft guru, Todd McShay (who ESPN seems to be in love with) or the veteran, Mel Kiper? Please watch the video before voting - make sure to listen for when McShay compares Felix Jones to a Pop Warner back. Imbecile.

  82. Garret:

    Princess,

Colt Brennan behind JDB, Henne AND Joe Flacco???

I mean besides the "Chosen One" Matt Ryan, C'MON!!!

    and

Leonard Peters is in a seperate category.

Very good and funny videos, thanks, Princess.

  91. FloridaTed:

    Kazz,

We all know by now that those socalled pundits are full of poopie kacka, I just ignore them. I think there are some teams out there who contributed to Colts down grading, in the hope they can steal him cheap.

He has proven himself for the pros everytime and I think the ones who need to know, know very well what he's made of.

I'm still of the believe that he might be the big surprise of the draft.

  92. LizKauai [Believer]:

    I agree with Ted.
After all, 1M Hawaii Colt fans can't ALL be wrong about what we have seen with our own eyes, eh?????
Colt Brennan is the Dark Horse of the NFL Draft.

  93. Garret:

Tulsa has some really interesting fan participation stuff during their Spring Game.

The Annual Spring Game will take place at the Hardesty Sports Complex Practice Field (8th and Delaware Ave, between Bama Pie and the Case Tennis Center) next Saturday. A live band, inflatable games for kids and concessions will be available. Fans are encouraged to bring lounge chairs and picnic at the facility. Fans will be able to call plays and be involved in on-field contests (catching a pass from a TU quarterback, throwing a pass to a TU receiver, catching a punt from a TU punter). There is no admission charge for the Annual Spring Game.

  94. wafan:

Blah, blah, blah, Colt, blah, blah, not drafted, blah . . .

That is all we seem to hear from some of the "experts". No doubt they know more than I do about their specific field but I am sick and tired of their, many times, groundless, and factless opinions. Sure, I have an opinion of a lot of things but I do not have the first-hand FACTS by which I feel utterly comfortable and confident in making a public statement.

So, until the experts are able to substantiate their claims and support their statements with first-hand observations and fact I choose to ignore them and their outrageous statements and claims.

It just is not worth my time and higher blood-pressure. Besides, I want to be around to see them eat every one of their slanderous words in a few years.

Roads are clear. But, if you want a snowball fight you have nearly an endless amount of snow!

  96. wafan:

  97. FloridaTed:

    wafan,

Totally agree with you. All of us know AT LEAST as much as those pundit buds. Most of them write their drivel without the slightest checking of facts, because they know they will never be called on to sustantiate their crap.

,blockquote>Petras Balocka, F, 6-8, 250, Vilnius, Lithuania (Pensacola [Fla.] JC)
An all-conference forward for Pensacola Junior College in 2007-08...led the team in scoring (13.7 ppg) and rebounding (11.2 rpg) ..shot 45 percent from floor and 47 percent from three-point range...selected for the Florida-Georgia Junior College All-Star game...played freshman season (2006-07) at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn...came to the United States from his native Lithuania as a high school freshman, playing four years of high school basketball in Georgia...played his final three seasons at Community Christian School in McDonough, Ga...helped lead Community Christian to a 110-7 record and a No. 3 national ranking...named the 2006 Peach Classic MVP....prior to arriving in the U.S., played at the Vilnius Basketball School in Lithuania ...also part of Lithuania's junior national team for four years.

Nash on Balocka: "Petras' versatility will really be an asset for us. He's a physical player who can bang inside and has the toughness to bolster our interior, especially with his rebounding. But he's also quick, fast and really skilled for his size. He's a top-notch athlete."

Lasha Parghalava, G, 6-2, 195, Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia (Pensacola [FL] JC)

Hi Tsaikos and bhf2: just dawdling in from practice again. Took some pics of Mana and some of the Kauai boys for Liz. Will defer to Princess video/interview with Mana. First thing I noticed this morning was that he was on a lot of rotations with the first unit. You're right--he's been working hard and looked good. Mama and family should be proud. OL and DL continue to improve. QBs looked good and seemed to be in better sync--after all it's day nine; ran about half of the plays from shotgun. Only trouble spot is the continuing mishandled snaps from under center. Then again it's not the first unit.
bhf2 I may take you up about the coaching clinic this Saturday. Very interesting to watch Coach Mack teach the finer points of reading OL tendencies. When you come over I'll explain that there should be cross training not only in River Dancing but also Aikido and Karate. --Only 3days 4 hours 12 min to K-day :D sjmacro & myki

  121. Nelson from DC:

Somebody was talking soccer and brought up the offside rule.
This is a turf vs. natural grass type debate. So of course I'll jump in.

My opinion (I used to play) is that it really makes the game. If you don't have the rule, teams either play too conservatively (even by soccer standards) by keeping their defense back so they don't get beat, or the game turns into an out of control shootout that really is no fun to watch. The offside rule also allows the defense to play (a little bit) more of a role in the offensive strategy and rewards teamwork.

The closest analogy I can think of would be the equivalent of eliminating the 3 second rule in basketball.

  122. FloridaTed:

    Kazz,

In a way it's kind of good that we're a little disrespected for this year. It's extra motivation and if we end up having a great season, we'll get plenty of respect. Should we beat Florida, and that's not out of the realm of possibility, we'll shoot up the ladder like a rocket.

ST -- at this point it looks like around 35 Tsai-kos are coming over after a usual too-much-to-eat 3+ hour tailgate at Richardson Field. Historically, the number who show up is 150% higher than the RSVP count...expect 50.

    See http://home.hawaii.rr.com/smurashi/tsai-kos/tailgate.html
for a glimpse of the known menu (usually a fraction of actual) and attendees.

I would not expect the tailgating Tsai-kos to eat more between 1630-1800 ...well, not much more anyway :) Please allow for this if there is a Plan B.

  127. Stephen Tsai:

Actually, we probably would be allowed to bring in our own food. All I know is we're getting access to the hospitality room.

  128. NYUH:

The good news - The University of Hawaii received $4.4 million today for its participation in the BCS Sugar Bowl football game on January 1, 2008.

The bad news - damn, the big schools pull this type of money down every year, and Georgia (which beat Hawaii) got nearly $17 million dollars.

Thus the BCS (Big Cash System) pumps money into a few select schools and conferences.

Hawaii - the exception that proves the rule.

Never read so much on Colt's Mater Dei experience

At Mater Dei High School, Brennan earned three letters in football and one in basketball. The team's MVP in 2001, he added All-League first-team gridiron honors. He led the squad to a 9-5 record his final year, completing more than 68% of his passes with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions, adding 200 yards and four scores on the ground.

The team went 11-2 his junior year and 9-1 during his sophomore campaign, when he led the team to the CIF championship with a win over powerhouse DeLaSalle High. After his senior year, he was invited to play in the County All-Star Game. He also lettered as a forward on the basketball team as a senior and the squad captured the CIF title.

Brennan turned down a scholarship offer from Utah State to enroll at Worcester Academy (Mass.) in 2002. He started seven games that season, completing 101-of-158 passes for 1,707 yards, 15 touchdowns and only four interceptions, but missed two games with a finger fracture. The All-New England Prep School choice helped the team to a 5-4 record, throwing for 287 yards and three scores on 16-of-22 attempts in an upset victory over Mount Ida and gained 390 yards with four scores in a triumph over Valley Forge.

Brennan enrolled at the University of Colorado in 2003 as a walk-on. He was listed fourth on the depth chart, but never appeared in a game at the school. His college career almost ended before it began when, on Jan. 28, 2004, he was arrested by campus police and charged with entering a co-ed's room. Uninvited, he was intoxicated at the time of the incident and the woman claimed he exposed himself and fondled her. He pleaded guilty to burglary and trespassing, but a charge of unlawful sexual contact was vacated by the court for lack of evidence. He was dismissed from the team.

Brennan transferred to Saddleback Community College, where he appeared in nine games during the 2004 season. He ranked third in the California junior college ranks with an average of 19.7 pass completions per game, seventh with an average of 253.7 yards passing and seventh in total offense (287.7 yards per game). He completed 177-of-259 passes (68.3%) for 2,532 yards, 23 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also rushed for 57 yards on 66 tries (0.9-yard average) with a score, finishing with 2,589 total yards.

When coach June Jones recruited him to Hawaii, Brennan found someone with complete confidence in his passing skills. Jones slowly brought Brennan along in the early stage of the 2005 season before turning the starting reins over for 10 games. Brennan led an offensive attack that ranked second in the nation in passing (384.25 yards per game) and led the 1-A ranks in total offense (476.17 yards per game).

He ranked ninth nationally with a 155.49 pass-efficiency rating, leading the country with an average of 371.25 yards in total offense, 358.42 aerial yards and 19.17 points responsible for per game. His 4,301 yards was the best in the nation, as he completed 350-of-515 pass attempts (68.0%), with 35 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He finished second on the team with 154 yards and two scores on 99 carries (1.6-yard average) and totaled 4,455 yards on 614 offensive plays.

To most quarterbacks, Brennan's 2005 stats would represent an entire college career. But the 2006 season was even more impressive, and Brennan did it in record-shattering fashion. The Sammy Baugh Award winner and Davey O'Brien Award finalist finished second in the voting for Cingular National Player of the Year Award honors. He earned All-American first-team recognition from The NFL Draft Report, adding second-team accolades from Walter Camp. He was named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and finished sixth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy.

Brennan would go on to set 18 NCAA, 17 WAC and 41 school records. He led the nation in pass efficiency (185.96), total offense (422.5 yards per game), points responsible for (27.71 ppg), yards passing (5,549), completion percentage (72.6) and yards passing per game (396.36). He hit on 406-of-559 tosses for 5,549 yards, including a national-record 58 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions. He finished second on the squad with 366 yards and five scores on 86 carries (4.3-yard average). He participated in 645 plays, gaining 5,915 total yards.

Brennan continued to torch opposing defensive backs in 2007, but he suffered a right ankle sprain in the team's third game vs. Nevada-Las Vegas that forced him to leave in the third quarter. Brennan re-injured the ankle the following week vs. Idaho and was forced to sit out the Charleston Southern game. He came back vs. Utah State, but his ankle didn't cooperate, forcing Brennan out just prior to halftime.

A concussion on a head-on collision vs. Fresno State would sideline him for the final 10 minutes vs. the Bulldogs and the following week, he saw just limited action vs. Nevada. In the Sugar Bowl vs. Georgia, he was shaken up in the fourth quarter and replaced for the final 14 minutes of Hawaii's only loss for the year.

Brennan managed to rank fifth in the nation in passing efficiency (159.85), fourth in points responsible for (23 per game) and passing yards (4,343), third in total offense (364.17 yards per game) and pass completions per game (29.92 per game) and second in average yards passing per game (361.92 ypg). The Hawaii quarterback connected on 359-of-510 passes (70.4%) for 4,343 yards, 38 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He scored eight times on 82 carries, recorded a solo tackle and amassed 4,370 yards in total offense.

In 38 games at Hawaii, Brennan started 35 times. He completed 1,292-of-1,584 passes (70.39%) for 14,193 yards, 131 touchdowns and 42 interceptions. He rushed 267 times for 547 yards (2.1-yard average) and 15 scores. On 1,851 offensive plays, he totaled 14,740 yards and 146 total touchdowns.

Including nine games at Saddleback College, Brennan participated in 47 collegiate games. He piled up 16,725 yards with 154 touchdowns and 46 interceptions on 1,292-of-1,843 throws (70.1%). He gained 604 yards with 16 scores on 333 carries (1.8-yard average). He totaled 17,329 yards on 2,176 offensive plays, an average of 368.7 yards per game.

  139. Kazz:

    D1,

I thought that the BCS' "generous" exemption of allowing a non-BCS school to participate in a BCS bowl game by ranking in the top 12 and giving them a MEAGER 4 million was their way of avoiding being hit with some sort of violation on "fair-trade"?

  140. NYUH:

    Memories

In 38 games at Hawaii, Brennan started 35 times. He completed 1,292-of-1,584 passes (70.39%) for 14,193 yards, 131 touchdowns and 42 interceptions. He rushed 267 times for 547 yards (2.1-yard average) and 15 scores. On 1,851 offensive plays, he totaled 14,740 yards and 146 total touchdowns.

  141. NYUH:

Thanks Gigi for the link info (changed to my blog)
Thanks d1shima for the note on Abercombie and the BCS

  142. Kazz:

I'm surprised Ole Abercrombie was sticking with his original statement months ago when he made it public he was going to pursue this.

In the scope of someone in his position it's awfully nice for the team's success to inspire that kind of initiative, but then again who knows the true objective behind things like this.

But just for now seems like it could garner bad press for all involved.

  143. Stephen Tsai:

It figures it would rain on the day I show up.

  144. d1shima:

    Kazz,

who knows the true objective behind things like this

It made the paper, didn't it?
    That's good enuf for Neil...

  145. d1shima:

    Stephen,

Well, hopefully with Southerly winds, the rain won't come until after practice is done.

    See you there!

  146. NYUH:

Kazz, good point, but any news for UH football is good news this year. Short of a upset over Florida, (or Colt being picked first in the draft) it will be hard for UH to get any respect this year.

  147. Stephen Tsai:

I think Abercrombie's stance would have been more significant if UH didn't get invited to the Sugar Bowl.

  148. Stretch:

ST - at the hospitality room, the only way for us to get food or drinks is to order through the Stadium vendor??

  149. Stretch:

Actually, I am mainly concerned about the "drinks"

  150. Garret:

Never read so much on Colt’s Mater Dei experience

    NYUH,

I do *not* think you should believe everything you read, even when it is positive about Colt.

The team went 11-2 his junior year and 9-1 during his sophomore campaign, when he led the team to the CIF championship with a win over powerhouse DeLaSalle High.

I do not think that Colt *led* Mater Dei during his sophomore year...since he was the backup to Matt Leinart when he was a sophomore AND junior. Unless my memory is totally fried.

  151. Garret:

I've checked the Dallas Morning News every day to read their daily review of QBs, waiting for when they got to Colt. NYUH beat me to it, which is great because it is good that everyone got to see Colt's article and how positive it was. I think that JJ spoke extensively to the reporter and that it influenced the article. After all of the negative stuff that I found and had to post, I can't stop from posting that quote.

"All you have to do is look at the film [to know the 'system quarterback' label doesn't fit]. The people that are saying that aren't comparing him to other quarterbacks who have played in this system. He's so much more accurate, so much more competitive and so much more of a winner. ... With [ex-Hawaii QB] Timmy Chang, if you would have called me and asked me if he could play in the NFL, my answer would have been no. ... [Brennan's] accuracy is that of a Jeff George or Warren Moon. His body type is that of a Chris Miller. His competitiveness is that of a Bobby Hebert. He has all the qualities of a great one. ... He can make every throw. He completed close to 70 percent of his passes. I would say 50 percent of the quarterbacks playing in the NFL can't do that against air. He did it in games. He throws them all. He's accurate on the deep balls, the intermediate routes, the short throws. ... Because he is so competitive and he does a lot of team things with guys, he leads by example and by doing all the things he has to do in games to win. He's very competitive. He'll stand back there and get hit in the mouth or run for the first down if he needs to. Those kind of guys don't have a problem being a leader. ... He'll be better under center, because he is so mobile doing all the boots and nakeds and those kind of things. ... The only [flaw] was his body type. He weighed in at 183 at the Senior Bowl. I heard he's up to 218 now. I think he's been trying to gain weight. He knew it was an issue, so they have him on all kind of high-carb stuff. But he should be able to carry 220-225 pounds. ... He'd be a good second-day pick. I know that."

  152. oxtail soup:

For anyone who hasn't seen this yet, a forum on ESPN site, discussion of Colt.
It ends with a copy of a response to Todd McShay. The beginning of the thread starts about the time of the Senior Bowl.

"Working early in the morning again on the road preparing.

I just received this link from two of my colleagues who are up early north in GB and Atlanta. Apparently this has been out for a while, but I haven't seen it before.

    He's definitely on everyone's radar.

"Excellent interview last week. Very humble and grounded young man. Everyone doesn't know where to draft him because another team may snatch him up if they wait too long. Has the F/O decided? We think he's the '08 Darkhorse. Thoughts?"

The thread progresses through the Senior Bowl, the College Football Challenge, the Combine and the Pro Day, and ends with:

"Draft sources including often cited sources online and in the news media have been quoted as saying that Matt Ryan is the projected top quarterback prospect of the 2008 draft.

Those who hold that opinion are dead wrong.

Having watched Matt Ryan in person and seeing his abilities on the field, Ryan can be described as "not overly impressive".

For any source to state that Matt Ryan is a better quarterback prospect than any other quarterback in this year's draft is pure insanity. Choosing Matt Ryan as the first quarterback selection overall would be a mistake for any franchise and a waste of a number one selection.

The real choice for a high quality quarterback and potential franchise player is the University of Hawaii's Colt Brennan.

Despite the unwarranted criticism of many who are unfamiliar with Brennan and who lack the first hand knowledge that can only be gained through careful analysis, Colt Brennan remains the top quarterback in this year's draft. Furthermore, some draft parties around the country realize this and are contemplating his selection early in the draft.

When compared side by side, there really is no comparison between Matt Ryan and Colt Brennan. Head to head, with respect to overall talent, statistical accuracy and efficiency, and in terms of character and maturity, Colt Brennan is truly a superior draft prospect.

It is becoming obvious that many analysts and commentators on sources that have become easy access points of information regarding NFL draft days do not allocate the necessary time to accurately evaluate each top draft prospect. In terms of the evaluations of Brennan that have appeared online and on television, the information appears thus far to have been inaccurate and unrepresentative of the draft analysis of reliable professionals.

When sources provide web reviews of prospective draft quarterbacks and highlight players such as Josh Johnson above Colt Brennan, it becomes evident that those sources have neither done a comprehensive analysis of the prospects and have chosen to misguide the general public. It is a tremendous disservice to common football fans who are interested in knowing about the top prospects prior to the draft selections, when so called analysts and commentators state information that is not consistent with the true pulse of actual draft parties.

Watch what happens and when you see just how wrong the reports online and in the media have been, we can meet here again to discuss why this was the case. We can highlight why pre-draft information varies so much from the outside-looking-in compared to the actual draft day preparations.

    Copy of private message response:

BTW Todd, aren't you tired of pimping your boy matt as #1, when he hasn't showed us anything. Matty didn't even go to a BCS game yet alone demonstrate his worth in either the combines and sr. wk. because he was a hold out except for everything that didn't mean much for qbs. Why not tell these posters rather than sending me personal messages. tell everyone, (if you can) what exactly makes Matty as good as you say? If you need to be paid to do that, let's just make the arrangement and get the truth out there already. It won't make a difference son to those who matter.

My position is obvious and you're well aware of it. Colt Brennan is the best quarterback prospect of the 2008 NFL draft. If we had been given the opportunity to see them side by side in the passing drills and QB drills at combine, these good people would see that Matt Ryan is lacking and is nowhere as talented as Colt Brennan."

  153. Kekoa:

SteveM is correct. We normally have lots of left overs from the T-gate because people aren't just full from eating, but they are also tired of eating! If you missed the T-gate...it's all your fault, no blame Kazz and crew, cause they make sure you get plenny for eat!

IMO - if there is a plan B, it should be on an individual basis where you are free to order something to eat or drink on you own. All the venues will be open anyway.

When and if the UH is taking over the responsibility of running the Stadium, maybe we can change some of the rules to make it more fan friendly. Rearrange the seating as some suggested, and other improvements. For example, why is it possible to have umbrellas at the Rainbow stadium and not at Aloha?

Where's W-Doc?... she was the resident expert on stadium stuff...are you lurking?...you sounded like you did when I spoke with you at the fundraiser...what say you?

  154. Garret:

Hard to imagine that the UCLA players ditched a day of spring practice (only 15 practices for the new coaches to put the new systems in!) where there were a ton of high school coaches and recruits present. They went against the wishes of their coach and the hurt the recruiting for their program for 2009 and possibly beyond..

The Bruins went "over the wall" Tuesday, a UCLA football tradition in which players bolted from practice for a self-imposed day off -- high-tailing it through a gate instead of scaling the practice facility wall as tradition demands.

It left Bruins coaches angry, high school coaches and potential recruits in attendance perplexed and fans questioning the team's commitment. Though visibly upset, first-year Coach Rick Neuheisel tried to put a lighter touch on it Tuesday, saying, "Maybe we can banish it forever since no one went over the wall."

His mood Wednesday was unknown, as a UCLA official said Neuheisel was unavailable for interviews.

The flight cost the Bruins a day of practice in their effort to rebound from a series of mediocre seasons.

Neuheisel apologized to an officiating crew that was assigned to work scrimmage portions of the practice.

Meanwhile, coaches from La Palma Kennedy High, who had come to Westwood to see practice, left shaking their heads.

"I guess that's why they're in the Lay's Potato Chips Bowl every year," said Chris Pascal, Kennedy's freshman coach.

Coaches from Encino Crespi High also left with a vivid impression.

"Let me put it this way, they wouldn't have done that at Fresno State," said Coach Jeremiah Ross, a former Fresno State player.

Pascal said he and other coaches had yet to receive an explanation or apology from UCLA as of Wednesday afternoon even though they were required to leave their e-mail addresses when they signed in before practice.

"They had recruits there, and can you imagine what they think after being driven there and being sent back onto the freeway at 5 p.m.?" Pascal said. "The four of us were standing there for a half-hour, someone could have said something. On the way home we thought about going over to USC because we knew they would be on the practice field."

  155. oxtail soup:

This was posted about the time of the Senior Bowl:

"I thought I share this link that I received from another one of my colleagues, this time in Florida.

This Colt Brennan is probably the only draft prospect whose popularity amongst draft parties is exploding while many college football fans are speculating that his draft stock is falling.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_C1_dVjnK0Q

If he comes into the combines ready, he could go in the 2nd/3rd rounds. I've said it before... I honestly think that he is the best college football prospect this year."

And a couple days later he posted this (I hope it's true):

"In coming days, the national media will pick up on the story that is brewing... Colt Brennan's draft stock is skyrocketing while non draft parties continue to say that it is going down. It's a story and attention will soon focus on what impresses NFL scouts and F/O people alike about Colt Brennan... It's the man behind the numbers. Combine that with talent and you have a quarterback that you can build a winning team around."

  161. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    al,
Some of us never jumped off of the Colt bandwagon. That IS a great post by oxtail soup though. I think the folks who say that Colt is being "kept under wraps" to keep him off the radar so that one of the teams can pick him up early, might be right. He doesn't have some hair-do analyst backing him, he has the skills and that's what counts.

  162. al:

good to see that spring ball is what it is.

    proving grounds.

the cal roberts saga continues.....he was a 3-4 star jc corner at san mateo cc with hisatake and maka. because of his 2 for 2 eligibility and the question marks regarding his transcripts....many schools backed off. even hawaii and home town san jose st. looked other ways. he got dropped off the table so to speak.

then as faith would have it, a 4 star jc corner didn't get his academics done and at the last minute cal roberts was given clearance and the last scholie. by then fall practice was in full swing.

he came in way down the totem pole. he worked hard earning some play time at the last 3-4 games. he kept working, working, working.

he is now the starting corner.

    congratulation mr. calvin roberts!!!

  163. al:

    and....mana silva. you go boy!

  164. al:

    kid,
    how you doing?

i heard you have started your diet. thats good.
    i guess i'll start up again tomorrow....err..night?

  165. Garret:

    Al,

I have never left Colt's bandwagon. I have consistently predicted that he'll be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round...I think all of the bad press makes some teams happy because they are hoping that they can draft him lower. However, it just takes one team to get nervous that they will lose him and then he could go in the 3rd round.

Right now there is NO benefit for teams or their scouts to say nice things about Colt. If you notice, midway through the Senior Bowl practices even the 49ers coaches stopped gushing over Colt and went silent on him. Analysts can say whatever they want but I doubt that they watched much tape on Colt or even talked with him. The only people who can talk about Colt are anonymous scouts, his former coaches (JJ was his head coach and offensive coordinator, so the NFL folks talk with him), and fans.

The Dallas Morning News guy did a story on Colt today and you saw how strongly JJ argued on Colt's behalf, trying to address the points that the critics have been bringing up. I'll bet that he's been even stronger on Colt's behalf when the NFL guys ask him about Colt...it is in JJ's best interest for Colt to do well in the NFL.

Colt will get his shot in the NFL. I just hope that he is taken by a team that has a good situation for him, not a horrible OL or a starter that will be there forever (see: Aaron Rodgers). The only big difference is that his draft position will determine how much he'll make for his first 3 or so years...UH would benefit if he makes as much as possible.

  166. Garret:

    NYUH,

There really hasn't been much talk about Hercules by the draft people. He had an awesome college career and proved himself with his bench reps of 225 pounds, but some of the measureables for other guards are better and that is what the draft guys go by. Plus, guards are not a high draft priority anyway so the media doesn't talk much about them.

The funny thing is that the NFL people know how important the interior linemen are and they have been getting HUGE contracts lately. So, one Hercules gets his shot and earns his spot, he'll get a nice financial reward in 3 years.

  167. Garret:

This reporter that covers the Dolphins put together a prioritized list of their draft needs. I was happy to see that center was not on the list at all. Their need for a QB does interest me.

    3. Quarterback - Both veteran quarterback Josh McCown, a consistent loser, and second-year player John Beck, who struggled in his rookie season, will get a shot to prove they can be the starter. But if they both prove they can't handle the load, or lack a necessary intangible a team needs to build around their quarterback, what then? The Trifecta has made it clear that they believe you don't win in this league without good quarterback play, so it would be wise to add another young arm to this competition early, increasing your chances of success in the coming seasons when the talent level around the quarterback eventually improves.

  168. Garret:

Maybe the Dolphins would draft Hercules and he could play alongside Samson?

    2. Offensive guard - Outside of Justin Smiley, there's no one else on the roster who has started a regular season game at offensive guard. Drew Mormino got a test run as a starter in the exhibition season, but his body couldn't hold up to the NFL pounding and he began the season on the IR because of a shoulder injury. Ikechuke Ndukwe was picked up off Baltimore's practice squad late last season, and Trey Darilek was added in the offseason, but neither has done anything to prove they are starter material. While this position is a pressing need for the Dolphins, because offensive guard generally isn't highly valued in the draft its possible to find a couple of good ones after the first two or three rounds. The Dolphins need to pick up two and have them battle it out during training camp.

  170. FloridaTed:

I have stated repeatedly that Colt will be the surprise of the draft. The only bad thing, should he go too high, that it will be a bad team. For his future, midround would be actually good for him from a playing standpoint, those teams are not too far off in personnel. Chicago would be great, they have a lot in place, but a lousy QB. Ideal would be behind a veteran with 1 or 2 yers left and then take over. But I really think that Colt has the skill and chutzpa to start the first year, if needed.

  171. Garret:

    FloridaTed,

I agree, among all of the teams that I've heard rumored interest in Colt, Chicago seems like the one that has the best situation for him. I look for a good team with a good OL and a bad QB...that sure sounds like Chicago!

  172. Garret:

My second choice would be the 49ers. Not as much there in terms of the team, but it would be easy to follow Colt in SF.

  173. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    al,
Your remarks at 163, well said. If he IS that last line of defense on game day, it's good to remember that he isn't just a Warrior, but a Warrior two times over, having played for Kamehameha in HS. I love what the coaches are saying about him, and he is competing for a job in what I think is going to be a very tough secondary.

ST: we're back from the advance screening of "88 minutes". Thanks for the passes. So as not to give anything away--a bit gory and wondering about the timing since today is the 1 year anniversary of the Virginia Tech incident.
Hope the link to this mornings pics didn't freeze up the site.
Will be at practice rain or shine, otherwise we catch you know what from bhf2--sjmacro

I clicked on NYUH's name (his last entry) and got his excellent blog. Did you know he has a Ph.D. and is a professor in New York?

  201. RainbowCliff:

Howz it Gigi Hawaii, a wonderful life GREAT lady as I celebrate the OHANA everyday here in Los Angeles. Got the Rainbow wahine volleyball apparatus up with LA84 Logo being proudly displayed. Thank you for all your comments and aloha spirit. Been up since 8:30 am as the excitement of this accomplishment will not let me sleep as it is 1:05 am here in Los Angeles. Thank you for your GREATNESS !

  202. Stretch:

al - tokyo tei huh?? i wonder where you guys when you pau dinner??

  203. gigi-hawaii ©:

Cliff, your enthusiasm for your cause is overwhelming! Good luck!

  204. gigi-hawaii ©:

Stretch, hubby wants to know if you ever work. He wonders how you find the time to blog during the day. haha

  205. Stretch:

RainbowCliff - Awesome job!! The people of LA are lucky to have you working for them.

  206. RainbowCliff:

sjmacro, 88 minutes I will check out as I have heard interesting comments to this movie. Glad to hear that the "Tsai Meister" hooked you up with the passes. Stay well and remember the ALOHA will always be the forefront to our successes. Thank you for allowing me your inspiration and GREATNESS !

  207. Stretch:

gigi - it is called EFFICIENCY!! I can do 8 hours of work in 4 hours and spend 4 hours blogging. hahaha ssshhhhhh, J!T$ might be lurking.

  208. gigi-hawaii ©:

stretch, hubby read your response. He said, "either that or he doesn't have enough work to do. He should come to my office."

  209. LizKauai:

Stephen, our West Kauai Plantation Heritage book was a hit. It featured recipes and anecdotes/snippets of oral histories of the plantation experience on Kauai. Plus it was a fundraiser item.

A Tsai-ko cookbook could include pix and stories of the fan / tailgate / Tsai-ko ohana experience ... great fuud shots plus the recipes... mmmm.

And be a fundraiser item for a good cause???

  210. gigi-hawaii ©:

Liz, well, don't have the cookbook printed locally. Local printers charge double the price of mainland printers.

    Check around first.

  211. RainbowCliff:

Stretch kind sir, I can only accomplish because of the polynesian hospitality that was given to me 27 years ago as this accomplishment is DEDICATED to you wonderful folks of Hawaii Nei. I am so PROUD as I can't sleep. Still have our picture together when you approach me at the New Orleans airport with that good looking smile and gentlemen stature.

It was 1981 when I left you folks DETERMINE to come back ONE DAY and show honor and respect with appreciation for the GREATNESS of your OHANA ! Hope to see you when I celebrate the "HOMECOMING" when I return to Oahu from August 26th to September 2nd. Be well and thank you for your kind remarks.

  212. Stretch:

ST & Liz - if a cookbook is put together, make sure you don't do the same thing that McCain has done. We don't want the Food Network complaining that we are using their recipes word for word but call them "Homemade Tsaiko Gate Recipes"

  213. gigi-hawaii ©:

Yeah, you cannot plagiarize other people's recipes!

  214. RainbowCliff:

Liz Kauai, ALOHA great lady of wisdom, charm and beauty. FIRED up with the completion of the Athletic Sport Playground as the ALOHA SPIRIT is on ! Going on 1:30 am in LA as the birds are sleeping as well as my neighbors BUT RainbowCliff is celebating with you GREAT folks of the Aloha State ever since 8:30 am this morning.

Been an AWESOME day lady of Kauai as my opening ceremony will be May 16th in which ALL of LA will be covered in Aloha GREEN ! God Bless you always.

  215. gigi-hawaii ©:

Cliff, I guess that means you won't be in the Swamp on Aug 30.

  216. LizKauai:

Stretch- you tink fuud network get recipes for Uncle Kekoa's turkey tails or Koakane's smoke meat or jeje's Portagee Bean Soup we can rip off????

    Bwahahaha!

RainbowCliff- the pictures say it all. The smiling faces of the kids and their great mentor are "nuff said!"
    Congrats!

  217. RainbowCliff:

Miss Gigi Hawaii, Mahalo for your kind remarks as I continue to represent you good folks with GREATNESS to the Aloha Spirit ! Stay well GREAT lady and give "hubby" a shout out of "Okage Sama De" Sincerely, RainbowCliff.

  218. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Brother Cliff,
One word: BE-YOO-TI-FULLLLLLLL!!! What a God send for the youth of the Wooten Center. What a great day for you. 219. RainbowCliff:

Lady GiGi, I will be celebrating with my former athletes, administrators, supporters and corporate sponsors at the Sheraton Waikiki hanoohano room as we raise the BIG bucks to support Hawaii athletics. So far $40,000.00 has been raised and still counting. Flying down with Mrs. RainbowCliff as we are honor vip guests flying first class as my LWC Board members are bringing me home. Hope to meet you and share ALOHA to you and the GREAT Liz Kauai !

  220. RainbowCliff:

Da Punchbowl Kid, what a GREAT surprise as I am ALWAYS honor to be in your aquaintance. This honor is not all mines as it is your ALOHA SPIRIT that inspires me everyday as I dedicate this magnificent creation to you wonderful people of the Aloha State. Proud to share it with you as I will be sending you photos to start the brochure pamphlet that you will be making.

The education, your compassion, cultural enrichment and ALOHA SPIRIT is the reason for the season. I never forgot the cheers and your wonderful Hawaiian children who gave me the love, respect and admiration. I am so GRATEFUL as I come back 27 years later to HONOR you GREAT folks with dignity and respect. God Bless you ALWAYS !

  221. Jason:

RainbowCliff: Great pictures! But yeah, those wires are kinda low. ;-)

Kate: Kinda late to say this, but we all know Sarah's better because she's from Moanalua. :-)

Garret: Hahahaha! I'd rather take Kiper over McShay, any day. (And I'd take me over both of them working together.) :-)

  222. Esme:

    Just breezing through...

Hi, DPK, RainbowCliff, Liz, gigi, Stretch, anyone else in the virtual playroom at this hour! :D

OK, gotta run and get cracking on work.

    Hi Jason!

    Hiya Esme!
    Is it Saturday YET????

  225. gigi-hawaii ©:

I got a nice donation receipt from Wena today. It was nice to read her kind words. Wish her all the best for her preschool.

    Good night, folks!

  226. Esme:

    Oh, and there's my jaSON.

Yep, I'm witchoo. Keao wins.

  227. Esme:

OK, I was leaving but .. here I am still. Isn't that always how it is here?

Liz, what's your vocal range — soprano? alto? ...

  228. LizKauai:

SJ-MACRO, Mahalo for the pix of today's practice! Hey, how dose Kauai keeds get so beeg??? No Mo "small" keed time!

  229. Esme:

    Nighty night, gigi.

And as my son always insists on adding: Don't let the bedbugs bite.

(At 3, he's too young yet to know that bedbugs really exist.)

  230. LizKauai:

Esme- I have a wide range but most comfy with sop these days.

  231. RainbowCliff:

Well folks it is 2:00 am and it is time to get some sleep and wake up tomorrow morning to some Cazimero Brothers "waikiki by the sea". WONDERFUL day as the GREATEST playground in all over Los Angeles has been completed in a sea of Aloha Green with the beach front of aqua blue sitting beautiful on USA Olympic volleyball pole, net and ladder.

Simpy the BEST, better then all the REST ! Have a WONDERFUL night as I continue to honor the Ohana with dignity and respect. Good Night. Sincerely, RainbowCliff.

  232. LizKauai:

Esme- I REALLY prefer to sing harmonies (us gals gonna give da crooners a run for their reputations, eh?) :wicked:

  233. LizKauai:

    Nitey Nite RainbowCliff!

  234. Esme:

Liz, am looking forward to hearing you belt out some at the K-call!

Also excited about meeting a buncha Tsaikos I still haven't had a chance to meet in person!

    --

OK, fo' real now, I'm out. Gotta work. Have a great evening, gang!

  235. Esme:

There goes RainbowCliff, a true gentleman. Exciting to read your posts about the playground!

    G'nite!

  236. Jason:

I got a receipt from Wena too. Good thing our mail carrier knows us, though, cause there was no apt #. Kinda important when you live in an apt building. ;-)

Back to draft talk: I said something about Josh Johnson the other day, where I thought he wouldn't be able to adjust to the NFL. Well, I think I was wrong there. Since people are bringing him up more and more, I went back and watched some of his films on YouTube. The whip action on his throws and his low stance still bother me, especially because I've never liked QBs of the Vince Young/Troy Smith mold, but he's accurate, athletic, and has great footwork. Not to mention, the problems I have with Johnson are similar to issues that Colt has to deal with, so I can't detract too much. But the level of competition hurts him bad, cause he's going to have a major learning curve when it comes to the speed of the game. Kinda like Tarvaris Jackson, for whom the Vikings REALLY reached. But I think Johnson is better than Jackson. Not 1st day draft pick good, though. 4th-6th round grade.

  237. SteveM:

Esme -- Liz is definitely soprano. However she may also go down to mezzo-soprano. See:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mezzo-soprano

I am no judge of range, but I have been reading more about it...

  238. RainbowCliff:

Jason and Esme, before I finally go to bed have to recognize the both of you as your radiance and celebrity status must be known and honored. Thank you for ALL of your inspiring words as you are TRUE athletic Warrior fans and I am so proud that I can make this sport athletic complex during our time together. Your spirit will live with me forever as I will speak in front of hundreds on opening day celebration May 16th HONORING you good folks of the 50th State. Mahalo for your GREATNESS ! Good night. Sincerely, RainbowCliff.

  239. oxtail soup:

I guess we won't know for sure till draft day of Colt's true draft status. Have any other QBs been villified as much as Brennan prior to the draft?

At the Senior Bowl, the NFL teams already have Colt in their sights, because they know he is the most overachieving QB in NCAA history. Unlike most of the general public, who have been asleep when ESPN aired UH games in the wee hours, they have access to, and are able to scrutinize all of his game film, not just against the so-called "weakling" teams, but the ones against USC, Alabama, Purdue, Oregon State, Boise, Arizona State. An impressive resume, and he appears to be incredibly accurate.

Colt works hard to learn all that he can under the NFL coaches there, and improves steadily during the week, and impresses with his work ethic. He picks apart defenses during drills. He gets voted team captain. He meets with NFL teams for interviews, up close and personal. Although he's underweight for an NFL prospect, the evaluation states that he should be able to bulk up. Maybe they see Colt's Dad is a pretty big guy too.

What does the public see? For years they've been fed the "system quarterback" line, "weak conference" argument. They see UH, and especially Colt, get hammered in the Sugar Bowl, for many it's the only game they've seen him play. A thin and weak-looking post-flu Brennan shows up at Senior Week, who goes 2-of-6 in the bowl game, so his stock is "plunging". An NFL front office tells a reporter that Brennan has been "coming across like a jackass" in interviews, possibly an attempt to (1)scare off other teams or (2)downgrade his draft stock. It's very doubtful that Colt would interview badly.

At the College Football Challenge, the media raves about their darling, Matt Ryan, and about Flacco's strong arm. The scouts see Brennan win the accuracy challenge by a large margin. They see his quick passes to a receiver running a course, and the winning final throw with velocity hitting the receiver the instant he rounds the corner, while the other QBs throw their balls high and outside. And I'm sure they see the competitive fire in Colt's face when he comes in second to Flacco in the QB course.

At the Combine, the camera stays on Booty and the commentators talk about him while Colt throws, even as Booty is applauding Colt's performance. If not for ST or other Hawaii media, there would be no information, if any, about his 100% completion grade at the Combine. The only QB stats on the NFL Combine page are meaningless ones like their 40 speed, and some mock drafters even put some faster-running QBs ahead of Brennan.

On Pro Day, Colt discloses his upcoming surgery, and the public speculates he will even go undrafted. A lot of NFL teams would LOVE to take pity on him and pick him up as a free agent, but that is not going to happen and they know it.

The 49ers had to switch a 3rd round pick with Chicago because of cheating, so maybe then?

Aaron Rodgers is not a durable as Brett Favre, but then who is?
