Scrimmage; Jr. Pro Day measurements

April 19th, 2008
By Stephen Tsai

There was a nice turnout for today's 35-play controlled scrimmage.

This time a crew of referees, including backups, worked. It was a good chance for the officials to also work on their game.

Greg McMackin scripted all of the plays. While the line of scrimmage — 25-yard line — remained the same, McMackin changed the situations. One play might be first-and-10, the next would be third-and-4.

Among the highlights:

• Leon Wright-Jackson broke free for a long gain off of Inoke Funaki's shovel pass.

• UH is missing the yards-after-catch plays produced by Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullins. But Kealoha Pilares and Jon Medeiros showed some moves, and Nate Nasca busted out for a long post-catch sprint.

• Inoke Funaki and Tyler Graunke were able to quickly release passes against constant blitzes.

• Safety Kenny Estes had an interception and big pass breakup.

• And Chawan Cut got to meet Princess Leila.

OK, first the disclaimer.
Players play in cleats. So their "playing" height should be an inch taller.
And for some, like Ryan Mouton, who has 39-inch vertical jump, height is not as important.
Also measurements taken yesterday were used with a carpenter's square, with the athlete standing a few inches from the measuring tape on the wall.
With that said, here are the recorded measurements from yesterday's Junior Pro Day. Here's how to read it. The first number is the hand span. The second is reach. The third is an athlete's weight. The fourth is a player's height. For fractions of inches, the scale is by eighths. For instance, Keith AhSoon is listed at 6012. That means he is 6 feet 1 2/8. David Farmer is 5116. That comes out to 5 feet 11 6/8.
Keith AhSoon: 11 ... 32 1/4 ... 317 ... 6012
C.J. Allen-Jones: 9 5/8 .., 33 1/4 ... 239 ... 6010
Jameel Dowling: 8 1/2 ... 32 ... 199 ... 6015
Solomon Elimimian: 9 1/4 ... 31 1/2 ... 229 ... 5103
David Farmer: 9 5/8 ... 30 1/2 ... 245 ... 5116
Jake Ingram: 9 1/4 ... 32 ... 241 ... 6030
Tyson Kafentzis: 9 3/4 ... 31 1/2 ... 229 ... 6004
Adam Leonard: 9 1/2 ... 31 ... 242 ... 5117
Joshua Leonard: 9 5/8 ... 32 3/4 ... 298 ... 6023
Francis Maka: 9 3/8 ... 32 ... 264 ... 6010
Keao Monteilh: 9 1/2 ... 30 1/2 ... 199 ... 5101
Ryan Mouton: 8 3/4 ... 30 ... 178 ... 5092
Khevin Peoples: 9 1/4 ... 31 1/4 ... 204 .. 5107
Ryan Perry: 8 ... 28 1/4 ... 166 ... 5066
Dane Porlas: 8 5/8 ... 28 1/2 ... 181 ... 5096
Calvin Roberts: 9 7/8 ... 30 3/4 ... 177 ... 5100
Erik Robinson: 9 ... 31 1/4 ... 203 ... 5104
Desmond Thomas: 9 1/4 ... 32 1/2 ... 173 ... 6010
Chris Thorpe: 8 1/2 .... 28 1/2 ... 185 ... 5064
David Veikune: 10 5/8 ... 32 1/2 ... 254 ... 6023
Michael Washington: 8 1/4 ... 29 3/8 ... 170 ... 5066
Keala Watson: 9 1/4 ... 31 3/4 ... 309 ... 6030

    1st???

  2. stacyj:

Oh my goodness, I have been missing the blog because of all the questions issues, etc. But, glad to be back and hope to catch up soon.

  3. d1shima[sez:]:

    Welcome back, stacyj.

    Catch up on the blog?

I guess your weekend plans are set!

    Stephen,
Does it matter that a player stands up against the wall or a few inches away from it?

  4. Stephen Tsai:

    Yes, you are.
Anyway, I can't figure out the coding for fractions, which is why I had to type it out, which is why I got lazy and just gave the pro scout's style for heights.

  5. d1shima[sez:]:

    ST,
Will you and/or Princess be going to the coaches' clinic?

  6. Stephen Tsai:

    d1shima:
it might have had a teeny impact.
trouble is that, unless you're Audrey Hepburn or Spongebob Squarepants, the top of your head isn't flat.

  7. Peaches:

Third? Tsai-kos and Tsai-kettes: looking forward to an exciting and enjoyable evening!

  8. Stephen Tsai:

I'm going to catch the latter part of the clinic.
    I've got stuff to do before today's practice (3 p.m.-5 p.m.)

  9. d1shima[sez:]:

Wow, if he had got there right after rolling outta bed maybe Adam Leonard woulda been 6000?

Missed by an eighth of an inch!

  10. Stephen Tsai:

    Peaches:
By the way, SteveM doesn't know it, but I put him in charge of next week's hospitality room. We've got the air-conditioned room, and I think I have it worked out where we can give a tour and meet with coaches, but I haven't figured out the food part yet.

  11. Stephen Tsai:

So now when you read those draft guides, you know the key.
By the way, there's a pretty cool book: "The Draft," by Pete Williams.
If it doesn't inspire you for next week, it should be motivating for your fantasy league drafts.

  12. d1shima[sez:]:

Audrey Hepburn has a flat head?

Gotta check out that Sinatra video again.

  13. d1shima[sez:]:

Who's going to be in charge of the not-quite-so-silent auction?

  14. d1shima[sez:]:

    Time to roll.

K Call...be there or be square (headed)

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Thass some big fellers up there. Keith Ah Soon with an 11" hand span? Never mind Bigfoot, call the biologists, alert the media, we've found "Bighand"!

  16. wafan:

AhSoon has an 11" hand span? Whoa! Shudder to think about that paw wrapped around my head.

  17. wafan:

AhSoon would make a good pianist -- a reach of an octave!!!

  18. wafan:

I hope everyone has a great time at the clinic and K-Call!!!

  19. Stephen Tsai:

I thought her head was flat when she balanced the book on her head in My Fair Lady.

  20. Esme:

    Hey, Tsaikos, 'morning!

For anyone who might have missed it, Liz quoted some mighty interested reports about Colt in the previous blog. Worth going back to take a look.

    Nine hours to K-Call! Meeee-meeeee-meeeeeeeee .... la-le-li-lo-luuuuuuuu.... :D

Now if only I could find that tiara to match the prom gown... Oh, wait, found it! AND with an extra tiara for homey! :lol!

  21. wafan:

Snowed last night. Around 2". Thankfully, nothing stuck to the ground. The plants sure were pretty this morning, though.

I believe it is the latest in the year it has ever snowed here in the lowlands. Except it snowed once in early May up in Bellingham around 25 years ago.

  22. Esme:

    Bleah. That shoulda been

  23. Peaches:

ST - Thanks for the heads up. I won't be attending the UH Football Ohana Festival next Saturday. I have tickets to the Chicago concert and will attend with my daughter and her friends. I told Steve he had to go to the festival. Longtime UH Fan asked him earlier this week if he was going and Steve said he didn't know. Now he has a reason to attend because "father Tsai" has spoken. :)

See you and Wena this evening.

  24. Addahknowsports:

    DPK and Wafan-

I was thinking the same thing about the 11" hand span. That's half a pinky short of a foot.

Good Morning.....make that Good Afternoon Tsaikos!

  25. wakarimasen:

    first

  26. Stephen Tsai:

Would it have been better to use the metric system?

  27. Garret:

    Princess,

Thank you for the video, it was nice to get a feel for the spirit of the players as they wen through the Junior Pro Day.

  28. Garret:

    ST,

Thank you very much for the measurement information above!

  29. Garret:

Chad Kapanui's team lost to Colorado last night. I guess this will drop them out of first place. It sure seems hard to win on the road in that league!

The fumbles by Chad's team sure hurt them in the first half. He brought the team back with 2 TDs, but then the comeback got derailed.

Colorado jumped out to a 24-6 lead, thanks in part to some stellar defensive play. Twice in the first half the Bandits (3-3) reached the red zone, only to fumble. The first, dropped by Devin Rispress, was scooped up by Travis Garcia and returned 41 yards for a touchdown, putting the Ice up 14-0. In the second quarter, Kaylon Price — trying to extend the ball over the goal line — lost his grip and Colorado’s Donnie Craft Jr. recovered in the back of the end zone.

That also led to an Ice score, a 1-yard run by Cody Wood, set up when Clement hit Hill for a 24-yard pass to the Sioux City 9.

After Sioux City had closed to within 24-20 on a pair of long touchdown passes by Chad Kapanui, the Ice went 21 yards in three plays in 16 seconds, capped by Hill’s diving 9-yard scoring catch to give Colorado a 31-20 lead at half.

Hill helped set up drives with a strong return game, picking up 95 yards on five attempts.

The second half followed much the same script, with Colorado’s defense holding firm. Craft intercepted Chad Kapanui’s first attempt after the break, and Quentin Womack nabbed another early in the fourth quarter. Both of Clement’s touchdown runs came after the turnovers.

  30. chawan_cut:

looks like it might be a little wet at the fields today. its raining up on the hill here. not sure what its like in manoa.

hopefully they don't cancel it. i think there's gonna be TONS of people there today.

  31. Garret:

I guess that the report that Bess was going to meet with the 49ers was false.

There was a report that Hawaii receiver Davone Bess and Arizona defensive tackle Lionel Dotson were going to make visits to the 49ers. The 49ers say those players were, in fact, not scheduled to meet with team officials.

  32. FloridaTed:

    Tsai-Meister,

Better not use the metric system, they all would sound a lot shorter, lol, unless you use centimeters.

  33. Garret:

Interesting that NFL teams can have "local Pro Days" and can invite unlimited numbers of local draft eligible players to them. That gives a competitive advantage to teams in areas with a lot of colleges with NFL-level talent!

There were approximately 45 players today at the 49ers' facility in Santa Clara for the "local combine." Under NFL rules, teams are allowed to schedule only 30 visits with draft-eligible players. However, there is no limit to the number of local players who can make visits.

Among the players at today's 49ers pro day were Miami quarterback Kyle Wright and Stanford tight end Evan Moore.

According to NFLdraftscout.com, Wright, the No. 14 ranked QB, is slated to be a seventh-round selection. Wright (6-4, 218) was a high-school star at Monte Vista High in Danville. Moore (6-6, 233) is projected to go undrafted.

Among those whose visits have been confirmed are WR Lavelle Hawkins (Cal), WR Robert Jordan (Cal), WR DeSean Jackson (Cal), OL Brian de la Puente (Cal), S Thomas DeCoud (Cal), QB Dennis Dixon (Oregon), WR Cam Colvin (Oregon) and DB Dwight Lowery (San Jose State).

There have been non-local visits scheduled with WR Malcolm Kelly (Oklahoma), DE Derrick Harvey (Florida), DE Phillip Merling (Clemson), LB Quentin Groves (Auburn), LB Shane Simmons (Western Washington) and C Ryan Wendell (Fresno State).

Aye, aye ST! Please email me the info. BTW, I was planning to attend, carpool and party with Mr. & Mrs. Long Time UH Fan.... gotta be in shape to keep up with those two when they are on the move...

  35. Stephen Tsai:

We can work on the details at the K-Call, while the lion is sleeping.

  36. Stephen Tsai:

I believe Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullins are still here.
They visit with a physical therapist here.
I guess the guy is really good, but it's always hush-hush, like they don't want to flood him with customers.

  37. Stephen Tsai:

We were allowed to go through the training room yesterday. It's a pretty amazing facility. Eric did a really good job. He's pretty much one of the most underrated workers in the department.
As our crew walked in, the players yelled: Get out, it's the training room.
After recording the measurments, Erik Robinson yelled: Hey, I wanna talk to you about those numbers.
To which your blog host yelled back: Sorry, I gotta go. Reporters aren't allowed in the training room.

  38. Stephen Tsai:

    Know what's strange?
We've been in the locker room, weight room, and now training room.
The one area we've never been allowed to enter is the Nagatani Center.
I guess it's because UH doesn't want reporters to see student-athletes ... studying?

  39. wafan:

    This place is a ghost-town!

  40. wafan:

    I hear crickets.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  41. Stephen Tsai:

It's a ghost town mostly because our computer folks keep locking out our readers.
    Grrrrr.

  42. chawan_cut:

    i can hear myself thinking...

wait, i'm supposed to hear that.

  43. d1shima(tilted):

heard that just about every school is represented at the coaches' clinic

  44. lurker:

sorry ST, I would say it's good that reporters shouldn't be in the academic center. That's where they need to concentrate on their studies and nothing else.

  45. LizKauai (Treo):

    test

  46. LizKauai (Treo):

Yahoo! I finally got this buggah to work!!!
Of course nobody is here except for the sounds of crickets...

  47. Ronnie:

    Hi Liz!

  48. d1shima [sez:]:

Whenever I was in an academic center, I specialized in concentrating on "nothing else"

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Liz,

    You boarding soon?

  51. Da Punchbowl Kid:

  52. HawaiianKiko:

Nagatani center fitting tribute to Bob.........would like to visit there someday

  53. MeiLing:

    wafan,

I don't think we'll get anymore snow, altho there's still some on the mountain here in Flag-pole. We've actually had a little snow on June 1...1981 or 82. Windy, sunny, cold enough at night to make a fire in the fireplace.

Hope everyone enjoyed the day watching practice and/or the coaches clinic and the K-call!

  54. mctruck:

Yeah!!!! finally got-into this maze of a blog.

ST or anybody, you guys read about the Fed's looking into Astro Turf and possibly, other synthetic turfs being contaminated with lead, etc.? read about that today.

The internet is full of articles, check it out.

  55. wafan:

    Mei LIng . . .

We are supposed to get more snow tonight. Pretty amazing considering I am only about 150-feet above sea-level.

    ==

I also wonder why my name and e-mail were both erased after I refreshed my screen?

    ==

    Mr. Tsai . . .

I do not generally subscribe to consipiracy theories; however, have you considered the "lock-out" of bloggers an attempt by management to demonstrate their power over the printed word, staff, and their fans?

  56. wafan:

We now return to our previously scheduled programming already in progress . . .

"The Sound of Silence, Opus 243, by Jiminey Cricket"

  57. Garret:

    mctruck,

I posted the article about the Astroturf yesterday. They closed some playgrounds and fields down already due to high lead measurements.

  58. SteveM:

Hey mctruck -- haven't seen you for a while...will remove you from the MIA list. Welcome aboard again!

    NEWS FLASH.....

Devastating news for the Tsai-ko guys karaoke team ... due to last-minute circumstances, prideperiod will not be able to attend the Karaoke Call tonight.

Tsighhh. Looks like we we'll need to unleash our secret weapons--DPK and Kekoa a little sooner and tenor Bighilofan2 is going to have to step up... :)

  59. NYUH:

So dissappointed you can't see the websites listed anymore. This blog is going downhill - but only because the technology isn't as useful.

  60. Garret:

The USC players today had a nice outing after spring practice today.

After Friday's abbreviated practice, players and coaches attended the USC-UCLA tennis match and dined on In-N-Out hamburgers.

  61. Garret:

    NYUH,

I agree with you that it is sad not to see the links...but at least the blog cannot be broken anymore because the long links are safe in the website field. That lets me use Firefox for this blog without having to worry about it being stretched by a long link.

  62. Garret:

    mctruck,

It is nice to see that you were able to get into the blog again...welcome back! I haven't had problems getting to the blog today, but earlier this week I had a lot of trouble even when I cleared my cache and cookies.

  63. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Hey mctruck! Wea you been, bubbah? Long time no read/smell. How you are you?

  64. Garret:

Sounds like UCLA's offense is struggling even more than UH's offense was struggling...at least the UH offense picked things up the last few practices.

"The snap counts were messy, the offsides," he said. "We can't have that with one week to go."

As to whether those things should have cleared up three weeks into spring practice, Chow said, "You'd think so. Maybe it's the snap count, maybe it's the way we snap the ball. I told the offense staff we're in here at 6 a.m. [today] and we're going to have to figure this thing out. It shouldn't be this way at this point. We only got another week."

The offensive line will need more time. The inexperienced group is the most important question the Bruins must answer before the season opener against Tennessee on Sept 1. The Bruins defensive front, led by defensive tackles Brigham Harwell and Brian Price dominated during the scrimmage.

"We're trying to learn as fast as possible," guard Scott Glickberg said. "Coach [Bob] Palcic is simplifying things as much as possible. We just have a lot of new guys, that's all it is. I don't think it's the lack of effort or athleticism. I just think we have some guys who need to get comfortable in their positions."

Neuheisel's concern was the passing game.

"I just think there needs to be a little more precision, where the timing is on," he said. "We need to improve dramatically in the next week to springboard into the off-season and fall."

  65. FloridaTed:

    The sounds of silence....

Everybody must be at the scimmage or in their bath rooms practicing and oiling their pipes for tonight. Have fun, everybody.

Hope we get a great scrimmage report.

  66. RainbowCliff:

Good evening Tsaiko Nation, I have come to agreement with Spalding Incorporated to exchange the volleyball champion blue pole pads to Forrest warrior green in HONOR of our outstanding football team. This exchange process took place because of Spalding sending me the wrong color sky blue instead of navy blue in which I convince there sales representative of my desire to HONOR you folks with the green as he agreed in principal to my request of loyalty and commitment.

Spalding has agreed to digital logo the pads for me. I have a jpeg file to the Warrior H but in order for me to place the Warrior emblem I will need permission for it as it is a patent right copy and I don't want to violate ncaa or copy right policies. I e-mailed Jim Donovan our newly appointed Athletic Director on a yes or no decesion. If granted permission I will use your Hawaiian Tasiko Addaknowjoe graphic art of the Warrior emblem in which he has created that logo as well as others for me.

The idea of one of you folks contributing to this milestone achievement is a truely gratifying experience as Mr. Addaknowjoe will have the honor of his art skills being displayed if I get approval to use the H emblem in HONOR of the Warrior football team. Any of you who has influences to the power of persuasion for this simple request will be GREATLY appreciated. No money to be made or illegal recruiting only to HONOR and PRAISE.

Finally the opening ceremony is set for the 16th of May as if you will click on my above name RainbowCliff the invitation flyer will appear. Have a wonderful evening tonight and THANK YOU good folks of Tsaiko Nation who represent the Aloha Spirit as I continue to honor the ohana with dignity and class. A Hui Ho ! Sincerely, RainbowCliff.

  67. LizKauai (Treo):

ok. Finally in the waiting room and ready ti Go!

Ayah about prideperiod. Dang, I was waiting to hear the golden tones.
Waaal, I guess that means the Tsai-kettes have a better chance. Hmmm, but now the guys have RK.
    It'll be an interesting evening!

  68. RainbowCliff:

    Testing

  69. LizKauai (Treo):

Rainbow Cliff- that would be so awesome to have your beautiful playground accented with Warrior Green!!!
I hope they find a way to make that happen :!:

  70. RainbowCliff:

The invitation is correct on this post as I had to retype the url address to update the athletic playground page. The information is correct on post 66 as the picture invitation is HERE as it will remain here after you click on my above name. Sorry for the miscue.

  71. RainbowCliff:

Aloha LizKauai, always an honor and pleasure. Yes kind lady it will be AWESOME to have the Warrior H on the Forrest green volleyball pads as the exchange process will take place Monday. Through this whole project I have been blessed by MANY to see this playground completed from Cortez Construction Incorporated, Snap Court duracourt surface, Spalding Incorporated, Wooten Center family and of course you good folks of Tsaiko Nation.

I believe in faith and prayer because with out these two spirtual components we as God loving people will not be able to live life to the fullest with out Christ in our lives. God knows my love and intentions to this WONDERFUL sport facility as he has given me my task to build it for his disadvantage inner city children of South Central Los Angeles. If it is meant to be it will be as your spiritual faith as well as mines will see it through. Bless you LizKauai for your positive strength THOUSANDS of miles away. I am humbled to your GREATNESS !

  72. Stretch:

Just got home to take a quick nap before heading out to the KCall.

I watched the baseball game then strolled over to the football practice. It was nice to meet a few more Tsaikos - bighilofan2 and JaM. I also had the pleasure of meeting Chawan at last night's baseball game.

If any of you guys were wondering what that bright flash was that occured about 5pm, it was Chawan smiling at the opportunity to meet and take a picture with the Princess!! I wonder if he will ever stop smiling for the rest of his life??

  73. FloridaTed:

    Hi, RainbowCliff.

That would be truly awesome if you could use the Warrior H-Logo on your court. I don't see why you shouldn't be able to use it. There is no gain, other than good exposure for Hawaii. Good Luck to you, my friend.

  74. RainbowCliff:

Florida Ted, my sentiments exactly. What more can a graduate student athlete do to honor his alma mater and his Hawaii athletic back ground by remembering his past and honoring the Hawaii present. It will give Hawaii GREAT exposure and allow children of the Inner City to know that there is an Island in the Pacific Ocean that supports them as well as there PROUD graduate. Will look forward to ONE day meeting you and sharing joy, laughter to your prescence of GREATNESS that you display to everyone by your thoughtful, candid and intelligent remarks. Mahalo for your kindness.

  75. LizKauai (Treo):

Made it to HNL! It was a most entertaining flight- more later.

CU soon- will try to blog from the KK.

  76. wafan:

    Chirp . . . chirp . . . chirp . . .

  77. RainbowCliff:

Good night good folks as you have a successful Karoke Call tonight. Be safe and drive carefully. Sincerely, RainbowCliff.

Article called "Finding a Home for Colt Brennan"

The NFL draft is a crazy process, and players move up and down draft boards like a child on a pogo stick. However, never has one player drawn rave reviews by some and been chastised so much by others such as this player.

He's a household name to many, but very unpopular with the fans who don't want their team to waste a pick on this loser. He has been mentioned as high as the second round, or maybe he could go undrafted.

He is the most scutinized player in the draft that nobody wants, yet everyone has him some mock draft - going to practically every team. It's crazy! Welcome to the life that is Colt Brennan.

The last time the world saw the University of Hawaii star QB Colt Brennan, he was getting pummelled by the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. Since then, he has been through one hell of a roller coaster ride.

First came the Senior Bowl, where he weighed in at 185 pounds and showed less than adequate footwork running plays from center under the watchful eyes of San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

Word was that he was constantly berated and town down by the coaching staff. NFL Network video of a few Brennan workouts showed Brennan having trouble with the deeper throws which severely hurt his value in the draft.

However, there are rumors that the coaches think he would be a good fit for the 49ers. As it turns out, that during those sessions during the Senior Bowl, Brennan tore his labrum, which caused some soreness in his hips. This led to a dead leg and some difficulty throwing the deep ball.

At the end after the week of practice in AL, Brennan was chosen as team captain ahead of the other star QBs Ainge and Woodson. However, during the game, Brennan had an unspectacular day leading many to question the lack of competition that he faced during his career.

Next came the NFL combine, where the first news to come out was that Brennan was reported as being a "jackass" by a Chicago writer who spoke to a scout from an NFL team. During the week at the combine, Brennan weighed in at 208 pounds.

He then endured a battery of questions regarding his past "arrest" in Colorado, the stigma of being a system QB, and the health related issues during his senior season which included a severe ankle sprain, and a concussion or two.

Finally, during the workouts, Brennan was the only quarterback to have a 100-percent throwing session receiving a perfect grade on the passing drills (two drops by the WRs were credited as completions because he had hit them right in the numbers).

Unfortunately for Brennan, there were less than 25 media members who watched his throwing session, so little was reported in the media about his successful day.

The third stop was his University of Hawaii pro day in California where he didn't throw as accurately because many of his recievers were gimpy and came up lame in their routes. During the pro day, it was reported that Brennan needed surgery to repair the partial tear in his hip and wouldn't run the 40-yard dash, further dropping his stock value.

Then to top of the afternoon, Brennan weighed in at 218 pounds, and questions circulated regarding the how the 30 + pound weight gained was achieved and where it was a healthy weight gain.

Now we are only one week away from the NFL Draft, and Brennan is probably the biggest name question mark in the entire draft. He may go as high as the second round, but may also drop completely down to the sixth round as well - or maybe even undrafted according to some pundits.

After doing a little research, I found something absolutely amazing. Different mock drafts have every team picking Brennan somewhere in the third to sixth rounds.

it seems 20 of the 32 teams in the NFL has their team selecting Brennan in some round of mock draft, but nobody seems to say that they want to take him. Fans don't want him, scouts say they don't think he will pan out, yet all these teams are being speculated as teams of interest who have them in a draft mock up.

Some of these teams include the Patriots, Eagles, Redskins, Jaguars, Bears, Packers, 49ers, Seahawks, Saints, Panthers, and a host of others. So don't be surprised to hear on Sunday morning that your team just picked Colt Brennan. Unbelievable!

If Colt goes in the fourth round or later, he will be a steal. He will be one of the two or three QB out of this draft that will make it in the NFL even though he is rated behind the John Booty's, Josh Johnson's and Denis Dixon's of the world. So with that, here is where I think Brennan would fit perfectly and where he will end up.

Although there are absolutely no reports that they are interested in him, I think Colt Brennan will become a Tampa Bay Buccaneer, and it would be the best fit. Jon Gruden loves his QBs, and he will use his third round pick to draft the Hawaii QB.

Break down Brennan and he will remind you of another Gruden coached QB, Rich Gannon. The word on Gannon when the Raiders signed him to a large free-agent contract was that he was mobile, competitive, a fiery leader, and very accurate; but didn't have a strong arm and threw passes at three-quarters to sidearm to some of his underneath receivers. That's just about what the scouting report has on Brennan as well.

The Bucs current starting QB is Jeff Garcia, who will be 39 soon, and will only have another year or two in the league. Garcia is also mobile, undersized, and someone who has to "load up" to throw the deep ball. Just like Brennan.

Brennan will be the perfect fit for the Bucs and Gruden's offense, with the perfect time (one or two years) to groom him. Don't be surprised to hear Brennan's name called when the Bucs pick in the third round...just remember where you heard it first!

Dallas Morning News feature on WRs in the drraft mentions some Warriors.

The rap on Hawaii's Colt Brennan is he's a system quarterback. Must be a pretty good system, because Brennan passed for 14,193 and 131 career touchdowns. But what works against against Brennan on draft day should work for Hawaii wide receivers Davone Bess, Ryan Grice-Mullen and Jason Rivers. "From Day 1 in this offense, you don't see the field unless you can read defenses," Grice-Mullen said. "Most routes are based on our reads. They can call one play but there may be five different routes you run based on your reads. You have to learn to read pre-coverages, then read them again when the ball is snapped and all the defenders are moving around." NFL offenses, particularly of the West Coast variety, function on the reads of the receivers. The Hawaii receivers must be pretty good readers – Bess caught 108 passes last season, Grice-Mullen 106 and Rivers 92.

Wide receivers leaving campus as their school's all-time leading receiver include Jabari Arthur (Akron), Earl Bennett (Vanderbilt), Davone Bess (Hawaii), Todd Blythe (Iowa State), Andre Caldwell (Florida), Pierre Garcon (Mt. Union), D.J. Hall (Alabama), James Hardy (Indiana), Shaheer McBride (Delaware State), Kevin Robinson (Utah State) and Jerome Simpson (Coastal Carolina). "I beat out Ozzie Newsome, one of the greatest players ever in college football and in the NFL," Hall said. "I take a lot of pride in that."

Oxtail...thanks for that article. Interesting reading.

Ronnie and Liz...Hi. Just starting to catch up with the blog. Didn't get on much while my son was home and then I was sick the first part of this week. How are you both doing...although I know it will probably be tomorrow when you get around to seeing this.

Ronnie...I tried to recruit my friend Julia into coming with us to torture those Fresno fans. She didn't think so, but I will still work on her. I reminded her about how they whined about their safety at Aloha stadium...sure got her mad again. Talk to you soon.

I wish I could have made it to the scrimmage today.

After an agonizing end to the Bill Callahan era, Nebraska fans couldn’t wait to see what Bo Pelini’s Cornhuskers had to offer.

Nebraska’s first spring game under the new coach drew a school-record crowd of 80,149, with some tickets reportedly selling for upward of $100 early in the week.

Mahalo to everyone for a great time at the Karaoke Kall. I'm going to make a Web page for the pictures and the videos that all the attendees can see — I'm restricting this to ONLY those that went for now.

If you were at the karaoke kall and you want to see the pics/videos, send me an e-mail at jnagaoka (at) hawaii.rr.com. Once I make the page, I'll send you the link.

I gotta head to bed, good night everyone. I hope everyone got home safely.

  97. Kekoa:

Mahalo Stevem & Peaches (you too Stretch) for putting on such a Tsaiko Eggstravaganza!

Wow, all the stars of Karaoke were out tonite. Esme, Liz, RK, A-Joe. Wreck, DPK, HiFlyer, Jason, Julie, and a cast of thousands warbling in the background with me.

Bulla was keeping an eye on things, protecting us from playroom bullies from next door. He annoited me with his royal order of the Watrcress sprig by planting one in my brewski. It was like a Chia-Pet, da buggah wen grow branches by da time we left!

Homey was showing us some pretty radical dance moves while Esme was workin' the stage. Hey...she got game!...and OMG ST!...talk about radical dance moves?! Koakane had to get the fire extingusher to put out his blazing Lion Dance.

Liz did her usual ear popping performance from the Tsaiko Opera. RK entertained us with his booming rendition of a Presley Classic. DPK carried the load for the KSB team thru most of the eve. I jumped offsides to help him sing a number, but was penalized for roughing the singer!

When the smoke cleared, the judges declared the men of Tsaiko were the hands down faves! All in all, everyone had a good time...even homey. We just have to tell him about how great a party he was at sometime next week when he sobers up...bwhahahaha!

Hope everyone got home safely!...the Mrs. and I had a wonderful time and thank you all for being such good company!

    G'nite Tsaiko Ohana,
(sj & myki...can you turn out the lite on your way home?)

  98. Esme:

  99. littlehilofan2:

My husband, bighilofan2, has been kind enough to bring me to your wonderful bashes and last night was great big fun. I truly enjoyed listening to all the great karaoke singing. You guys are awesome! I must say that my favorite last night was Liz from Kauai. Liz, if singing is not your career you could certainly go there. Again, mahalo for the great time, great food and the "Shots", cough, cough. Hope to see you all soon.
