A happy ending

May 4th, 2008
By Stephen Tsai

Today was easily the best Senior Day for the UH softball team.

Not only did the Rainbow Wahine defeat Utah State, 5-0, but former UH football player Chris Williams proposed to center-fielder Kaulana Gould. She accepted, or at least it appeared that way, since she was overcome with emotion and her response wasn't picked up by the stadium microphone.

There wasn't a dry eye. Well, except for mine. I mean, maybe the smoke from the post-game barbecue got into my eyes, causing a little moistening, yeah, that's it. That's my story.

Davone Bess said he had a good experience in the Miami Dolphins' three-day camp for rookies. Bess practiced at Z (right wideout), F (slotback) and returned punts and kickoffs. He has been told to report to the May 16 mini-camp.

Senior Day up here is really lame. Just introductions and applause. Whoopie.

At the high school where I teach our former W-VB coach used to coach in Hawai'i -- I do not know where. Anyhow, I used to help him make lei's for the senior girls. The Hawai'i transplants were always excited about it and the local (over here) people thought it was strange. Now they kind of expect and appreciate it -- I now leave the lei-making up to the parents.

Good news about Bess and softball senior day.

    Good afternoon everyone!

The early responses to the survey below seems to be split between June and August. Please give your input. Responding to the survey is not a commitment to attend...

WHEN IS THE NEXT MAJOR KARAOKE CALL?

Help decide this. The planning committee is just forming but already has widely varying dates. We will establish the WHEN before tackling the WHERE.

The Krazy Karaoke Call on March 19 was an intermediate-to-large evolution. The next one is hopefully in the large class (40-50 people so no one is left out), be in a totally different venue and have a more casual tailgate/party type atmosphere for a couple hours before the karaoke starts. :)

I have a brief explanation and a survey posted to gather your input. Decided to resurrect the survey rather than send emails. This way, no flooded email boxes and those not currently on the karaoke email list can participate (also send me your email address if you want to be included in any email announcements). Please take the short survey at:

Successful launch of the Westside Tsaiko Chapter has adjourned.

I will let Pastor Kekoa and Deacon Koakane provide all the details.

Suffice to say results were a success; gotta go take a nap!

    Laterzzzzz....

    Great news about DB!

Will go add more votes to the Dolphins website after wake up....

Any word on RGM? Glad Bess and Rivers are doing well.

Does Santos' injury mean he is out of the summer training?

    Posted this on old blog...

    10:02 a.m. ET
    Colt Brennan

Sixth-round draft pick Colt Brennan looks antsy. The Hawaii product looks like he wants to run, drop back, and throw the ball 50 yards.

    Coaches won’t let him.

Mid-field, quarterbacks are practicing the fundamentals after snaps, under the watchful eye of offensive assistant Chris Meidt.

Brennan is standing off to the side, watching. Every now and then, he’ll simulate what other quarterbacks are doing. He’ll toss the ball into the air, and then catch it.

“He wants to throw [with the other quarterbacks], but we tell him, ?You’re not ready,’” Jim Zorn said.

  17. Hawaiiroller:

Houston Titans hadn't had their mini camp yet. RGM will shine. :)

    Hawaiiroller

    thanks for news on RGM!

  19. Jason:

    NYUH: You mean Shane Austin?

Backup quarterback Shane Austin will not be able to train for the next six to eight weeks after suffering a fracture in his right foot on the final play of last week’s Warrior Bowl.

Austin was on crutches today. His right foot was in a green cast.

The offseason conditioning program begins May 27. Austin is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in August.

CONGRATS to the wahine softball team!

Since Davone Bess is from Oakland, CA, I wonder if he's going back home before the mini-camp. Glad to hear he was invited to attend the camp on May 15.

BHF2: NAU has a good Nursing program. The state's given us extra funding for our nursing program since there's a shortage of nurses. Flag-pole is not too big a town, so there aren't many distractions. Have her join the HAPA Hawaiian club to keep in touch with home, but I'm sure she'll meet many other people.

  25. Maverick:

  26. wafan:

    Wow! So few people here!!!

What is everyone else doing? Recovering from the meeting?

  27. NYUH:

Thanks Jason, my mistake. I was just wondering if any other QBs will be invited back for the summer training besides Greg Alexander, Inoke Funaki, Tyler Graunke, and Brent Rausch. I think it will be only this four - the two frontrunners and the two JC candidates.

  28. d1shima [sez:]:

    Wow,
    Watta finish.

  30. Hawaiiroller:

Congrats to the Wahine. Now win he WAC Touney and on to the big one. :D

  31. Jason:

NYUH: Summer workouts are not run by the coaches, it's all by the players, and it's all voluntary — whomever wants to participate can (as long as they are eligible).

In fact, coaches are barred from getting involved in any summer workouts; the only exception to that rule is a strength and conditioning coach. I don't think the rest of the coaching staff can get involved until Fall Camp starts.

At least, that is my understanding of the rules. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

  32. koakane ™:

congrats to WSB for sweeping Utah State :D

and da men BB for the pulling out a win :o musta been exciting when talking to stretch uh down 7-5 next thing win 8-7.

timed my call right time eh?

  33. Stephen Tsai:

Actually, NYUH, it was my bad on Grice-Mullins.
I talked to him today. I said: "How did rookie camp go?"
He said: "I don' know. It hasn't happened yet."

  34. Stephen Tsai:

    Jason:
You're correct that the coaches don't run the summer workouts.
As for the conditioning program, the players follow a schedule set by the strength/condition staff.

  35. NYUH:

Jason, Actually I was thinking of Summer Practice when places are limited.

  36. gigi-hawaii ©:

ST, is it true that there can be only 4 QBs on the UH team? If so, quite a few will be cut, huh?

  37. bighilofan2:

    Maverick,

the Miyagi action in dis house is with clorox, water, sponge and old t shirt (towels). wipe da mildew off the walls before we paint.

  38. bighilofan2:

actually she going NAU cause they got a good nursing school, and i told her about my new friend Mei Ling and she wants to be a nurse, and she wants to get off the rock, and, she's the oldest of the oldest and oldest and oldest and oldest, so she going NAU cause dats old school.

    heh heh heh.

  39. Long Time UH Fan:

    Gigi,

Last season they had 5 QB's: Colt, Graunke, Funaki, Austin and Kepoo....

  40. Jason:

    http://honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080429/SPORTS0201/804290380/1032

NYUH: I think what you're referring to is the fall camp that starts in August. That's different from the voluntary summer workouts that I was talking about.

The NCAA limits Division I-A teams to 105 players during training camp, which opens in August. The active roster may expand on the first day of instruction. UH's fall semester begins Aug. 25.

  41. Garret:

Last night I posted the South Florida Sun-Sentinel feature article on Bess. The Miami Herald had a feature article on Bess today. The Miami Herald reporter actually talked with RGM to get more info on Bess!

Serving his time at the facility in Byron, Calif., Bess' turnaround began when he earned a spot on a 7-on-7 football team that played squads from other rehabilitation centers in the area.

''I wasn't even in football shape,'' Bess said. ``I hadn't been doing much of anything at the time.''

But apparently, his athletic ability was still impressive enough. Bess didn't know it, but a friend of his high school coach had video taped of Bess' games. The person, Keith Bhonapha, was working as a graduate assistant under Hawaii coach June Jones.

Grainy footage of Bess resulted in immediate interest.

''He liked what he saw,'' Bess said. ``I guess he saw potential.''

When Bess finished his sentence, he immediately scheduled a trip to Hawaii, where he not only proved to the staff that he was athletic, but also revealed a personality that was far different than the one painted by his arrest.

He enrolled at the school, something his former college teammates said was the best thing that could have happened to him.

''I think Hawaii was a really good getaway for him from his old lifestyle, from all of that stuff,'' said Ryan Grice Mullen, who played with Bess at the school. ``When you go to Hawaii, you get away from everything. It was a way for him to start new, and he made the most of it.

``He was a real humble guy when he got there. You could tell he just loved the game, and he seemed to feel really thankful and blessed to be in the situation he was in.''

When the NFL Draft advisory board projected he'd be a third-round choice this year, Bess decided to leave school early. But a slow 40-yard dash at the combine caused his stock to slip, which also caused him to slide on draft day.

The Dolphins, however, called in the fifth round to make sure Bess knew they were watching him closely. When he went undrafted, Miami pounced on his potential. And at this weekend's minicamp, Bess has begun to reveal why.

''I see a player that has pretty good ball skills right now,'' Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said. ``He certainly needs to do some things from a conditioning standpoint. But the one thing with him is, he has been in an offense where they are running a bunch of routes every game. I think that is a positive.''

For an undrafted free agent to make an NFL roster takes both chance and opportunity. But given a thin corps of wide receivers and the Dolphins' decision to go without drafting any other players at the position -- Bess might be in a good situation.

If indeed he manages to make the team, Bess said, he will remember his past as he plans for his future.

''I'm really thankful,'' Bess said. ``I owe several people a lot for taking a chance on me. First, at Hawaii. Now, in Miami. I'm just trying to work hard and make this team.''

  42. Garret:

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel had a VERY encouraging note about Bess. They also pointed out something that JJ pointed out in their article yesterday--Bess' 40-yard time isn't as important to his on-field play as is his quickness. The article I posted last night mentioned that Bess' 10-yard time was the same as the top WR drafted this year.

Of the five receivers in camp Davon Bess looks like he has the potential to be the best. He's quick, catches everything with his hands, and has a stout frame. He's short (5-foot-10), but has a super thick lower body. His quads are huge. Kind of reminds me of a quicker version of Darnell Jenkins, who the Dolphins did try to sign by the way.

Please do remember that quick and fast are two totally different things. There's something called short speed, which helps you get in and out of cuts, creating separation. And then there's long speed, which helps receivers make big plays down-field. I personally would rather have quickness.

  43. Stephen Tsai:

    Gigi:
There is no limit to how many quarterbacks can be on a team.
In 2000, UH brought in eight QBs.

  44. Garret:

The Palm Beach Post *also* has a feature article on Bess today. Every paper that covers the Dolphins seems to be focusing on Bess, and this meshes nicely with ST's mention of Bess at the top of this blog.

Offensive coordinator Dan Henning, a veteran of 28 NFL seasons, likes what he has seen from rookie wideout Davone Bess.

Sure hands. Sharp routes. Nice dreads.

Henning, 65, looked to narrow the generational gap when he complimented Bess' signature blond-tipped dreadlocks during Saturday's practice.

Henning, who even asked Bess for the name of his hairdresser, may have been joking. But for Bess, it was nice to be noticed again.

During last weekend's NFL draft, Bess was ignored for two days.

When the Dolphins offered a free-agent deal, Bess jumped at the chance, especially since no one on Miami's current roster caught more than two touchdowns or had more than 425 receiving yards.

"They didn't have any receiver that was contributing," Bess said.

Following Saturday's morning practice, Sparano questioned all the rookies' conditioning. But Bess showed his endurance during a strong practice in the afternoon.

Bess, 22, can run pass routes all day. He had no choice in Hawaii's high-scoring passing offense, but he left school a year early when coach June Jones bolted for SMU and quarterback Colt Brennan headed to the NFL.

"I decided I was ready to move on to the next phase of my life," Bess said.

Sparano said the Dolphins, who have three receivers 6-foot-2 or taller on the roster, could use a smaller receiver who can line up in the slot, get open and move the chains.

"For us it was just a combination of finding enough big receivers out there and certainly some guys that can create a little bit," Sparano said.

Changing subjects, a LB for BSU just had his career ended due to a shoulder injury.

Boise State senior linebacker David Shields, whose career has been hampered by shoulder injuries, will not play in 2008, Boise State coach Chris Petersen announced Thursday.

Shields' career is over. He will use a medical hardship and remain on scholarship, the school announced. Shields, who is expected to graduate in December, will not count toward the team's limit of 85 scholarships, but will be active in the program with the program in an undetermined role.

A part-time starter in the last two seasons, Shields has 88 career tackles, including nine for loss and 1.5 sacks. In 2006, he had 44 tackles and five for loss. Last season, Shields played in 11 games and had 35 tackles, including three for loss.

  46. Garret:

This is a nice way for Idaho to increase their ticket sales. Any BSU fan who wants to buy a ticket for BSU's game at Idaho *also* has to buy a ticket to another Idaho game. You know that BSU fans can turn Idaho's game into a sell-out...and they might also sell out another Idaho game also with this policy.

Boise State fans who want to attend the Broncos' game with rival Idaho this fall will have to buy tickets to another game to get into the Kibbie Dome.

Idaho announced Saturday that it would not sell single-game tickets for the Nov. 15 game between the Broncos and Vandals in Moscow.

In order to get a ticket for that game, fans must purchase a Gem State Twin Pack, which includes tickets to the Vandals' game with Idaho State on Sept. 6, or they must buy a Pick Three, which entitles them to tickets to any three of the Vandals' six home games this fall.

The Gem State pack is $59. The Pick Three plan costs $86.

  47. Garret:

When we look at scholarship offers and the Daniel Smith situation, it is interesting to note that Illinois apparently has more than *150* scholarship offers out right now!

‘‘It’s a smart approach,’’ Lemming said. ‘‘Illinois can’t beat Ohio State in Ohio or Michigan in Michigan or Tennessee in Tennessee. So they offer 200 kids nationally. They offer great players ahead of everyone else.

‘‘Today, if you don’t offer to these kids right away, they get a chip on their shoulder. They always remember the coaches who paid attention to them first. You must be aggressive. Everywhere I’ve gone, Illinois has had a mark on the area.’’

The Illini have three commitments — linemen Melvin Fellows of Garfield Heights, Ohio, and Lindell Buckner and Leon Hill of Leo — but they have offered scholarships to more than 150 players, more than any other school.

  48. Garret:

This soccer goal is truly crazy. The video is short but amazing to me.

Montgomery Town goalie Steven Goodwin, from the edge of his own penalty box, strikes an 80-yard bomb into the opposing team's net.

What's incredible about this is that it's off of a penalty, so everyone was set up on the other side of the field preparing for the kick, including the other goalie, and Goodwin still sent it into the net. One local politician has even set up a session in the British House of Commons to proclaim it one the greatest goals in English soccer history. And you know what, he's probably right.

You can watch a hundred years of soccer on every level - which I don't advise doing - and you'll probably never see anything like this again.

By the way. Worst. Celebration. Ever.

  49. Garret:

I'm done spamming the blog now...congratulations to the Wahine softball team for winning today and congratulations to Kaulana and Chris!

  51. Kekoa:

Da Wessie Chapter needed a staff of 6 waitresses and 2 waiters to keep up with filling our OJ & coffee. Everytime you turned around someone was pouring you another glass or cup.

High times and heavy discussion always seems to prevail at the Tsaiko gatherings. Toss out a subject and bang immediate response plus or minus. Traffic lanes to the buffet tables were opened extremely wide for our group. The Omelet station master cranked out supersized omelets by the pound. Each were larger than the previous. Some of the ingredients made him wonder what exotic planet we were from. Who would have thought that a stuffed cabbage omelet was possible?

Aside from the regular breakfast items like bacon, portuguese sausage, hashed browns and rice, their were some slabs of Roast Beef that were hard to resist. The stuffed cabbage was the bomb tho - everyone had a pile of them on their plates. Chicken Marsela and veggies were part of the spread. Fruits, Salads, and a dessert table rounded out the offerings.

There was grid lock in the Tsaiko return to terminal lanes. Massive amounts of fuud was being inhaled from the buffet tables. I expected the yellow alert klaxon horn to go off at any moment for the chefs to get busy and bring more reinforcements out of the kitchen.

Kama, Wreck and A-Joe formed a direct line of attack. Me and Koakane held in a back-up role just in case they were overwhelmed with choices. BG & D1shima were hanging back in a support role, but managed to put a huge dent in the center table. Pops sat back and wondered how all that fuud could disappear in the blink of an eye! The ladies helped, but I don't feel safe divulging any information about portion sizes for them. I know better!

Wow, I'm getting hungry just thinking about all that we managed to put away. When the dust settled, we had taken heavy casualties, but we managed to roll out the door for one final photo op. Sealt belts were a bit tighter on the way out the gate, but that's standard operating procedure for Tsaikos. We are a very tight knit group.

I'll leave the rest of the story for the Tsaikettes to tell. They were very busy keeping things in perspective, taking snapshots and making sure we behaved like the gentlemen that we are.

  52. d1shima [sez:]:

    Congrats to the happy couple.
...and that's not you Kekoa and Koakane ;-)

Gee Stephen, if the "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" bothers you so much, how will you ever survive a TsaikoGate?

d1, he comes afta the cooking pau.

  54. FloridaTed:

    Aloha, Tsaiko-Nation,

Just returned from a Jacksonville weekend with the kids. Stopped by at the Swamp and walked around Gator Stadium.

    Here's my scouting report:

Was very surprised how tight and cramped it looked, not nearly as impressive as I expected. Very narrow bleachers everywhere, better bring a pillow. Very tight seating, you will be sitting butt to butt. 7 stories high of luxury suites, they must have tons of high rolling boosters. Very little room between crowd and field. Aloha Stadium looks like Pro-Stadium next to the swamp. There is no Parking anywhere that resembles anything like stadium parking. A lot of people around town making a living for decades with private parking arrangements.

There was a graduation ceremony going on and apparently that took every parking spot within a two mile radius. After we told a female security guard that we're from Hawaii, wanting to scout the stadium for our friends, she let us park right next to the entrance and we could walk right in.

She told us that the young crowd ( and quite a few of the older ones) are very rowdy and rude. Avoid arguments with the locals after the game, there is always big trouble when they lose and often when they win.

For Tsaikos going to the game I recommend chartered busses with drop-off and pick-up, that would be the best way to go. Don't rent a car, without having also secured parking along with it. By the way, every church on a 10 mile stretch along University Blvd already has their parking lots sold out. It's kind of like the old termite palace in Moiliili, only about five times worse.

I'll try to get tickets trough my daughter from my ex, she used to be be very connected in the Waterhouse days, but with only 4,000 tx to UH it will be hard. But I will come to the Orlando Cattle call for sure.

  55. Kekoa:

Florida Ted - If you cannot get ticks, will it be broadcasted locally on a free channel, or is it PPV?

  56. FloridaTed:

    PS. Swamp.

I hope it will be a night game, if it's a day game, it will be 110 to 120 on the field.

  57. Kekoa:

As President of the Hawaiian Nation Chapter, I should be afforded Diplomatic Immunity for myself and my entourage. I will need a Police Escort Florida Ted.

  58. FloridaTed:

    Kekoa,

Going by last year, the Tampa Bay Cable carrier, Bright House Networks, carried all Gator games, as well as FSU and Miami, unless they were picked up by ESPN or National Net Works. It was free last year.

  59. FloridaTed:

    Kekoa,

As President of the Hawaiian Nation Chapter you should demand a stretch limousine from UF, then enter the stadium with Pau Riders and Warriors carrying you under a canopy to your luxury Suite, that would be appropriate.

  60. Kekoa:

sj-mac - Can you email BG copies of the Green and Black team roster? My copies were accidently destroyed by me not paying attention to detail.

    Mahalo,
    Kekoa

  61. Stephen Tsai:

Just had a nice chat with Terry Brennan.
Colt is due home (through Phoenix) in about an hour.
Terry said Colt wore No. 5 in rookie camp, although it's not known if that will be his permanent number. Colt's back home for two weeks, then he goes to D.C. for five weeks.

Good day for Wahine Softball, Rainbow Baseball, Colt, Bess, Tsaikos.... Yeehaaa!

  64. Kekoa:

I like your style Florida Ted! I need a good Public Relations Director, and since you've already got the ball rolling in the right direction would you consider the nomination? The pay is small change, but the benefits are terrific!

  65. Stretch:

What a baseball game!! The WAC baseball umpires were terrible. Today it was Sac St coach John Smith to be ejected arguing a call. A little while later, the next coach for the heave ho arguing another call. In the bottom of the ninth, it appeared that the Hawaii batter was beaned with the ball that would have brought in a run to tie the game at 7. The umpire ruled that the batter leaned into the pitch. Trap came out again and I was hoping to see him turn his hat around, that would have been classic. Two head coaches and an assistant thrown out of the same game.

I hope that the WAC office reviews the game and can reprimand the umpires. The controversial calls came at critical times of the game that easily could have affected the outcome of the game.

  66. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

Although I wasn't able to clone myself to be in two ballparks at the same time, I did spend the first three innings at Murakami Stadium before heading across the street where I came in just as Na Wahine were coming to bat in the bottom of their third inning.

I had the radio with me so I kept everyone sitting nearby - the UH fans at least - up to speed as to what was happening at the baseball game. Just as the Aggies came to bat in the top of the 7th was when UH caught up with Sacto. If you were watching the game on tv and a camera was scanning the third base bleachers, there were about 20 of us screaming and high-fiving - including yours truly.

As soon that game ended, I hele`d back to the baseball game - just in time for to see the lead go back to Sacto. However, as reported elsewhere, UH pulled it out in the bottom of the 9th.

Two coaches got tossed in today's bb game - this must set a series record or something.

QUESTION: Can a coach get so out of hand that the umpire can forfeit the game to the other team?

STEPHEN: Please print the softball tournament seeds as soon as possible. Although I have the brackets, what teams are what seeds? The WAC website only says that Nevada will be the #1 seed.

Would you also please find out the radio & tv schedules for this coming weekend for both baseball and softball and post them here or in the regular sports section as soon as possible. Many of us are going to have to deal with dying grandmothers or special trips to the dentist to repair cracked fillings later this week or bring earphones to the office to listen to the games.

Glad that the Sunday Kakahiaka Kall went well. Not likely I'd ever join one of them since I am not a breakfast eater by trade although I am sure that I could try to eat something - do they have dessert tables at breakfast buffets?

Coach Mack sounds great, doesn't he? You learn alot about him, especially how he handled the Graunke thing. And he's walkin really careful with the two braddas. Howzit Tsaikos!

Just got home from a most enjoyable day full of our favorite "F"s.

First of all, what I thought was going to be a small group had doubled in size by the time we reached Kolekole Grill. With Tsaikos, the more we have, the merrier it gets.

I think the plan of attack at a venue like that should be "a long and slow approach". The food was good (loved the stuffed cabbage), the service was great and you did not get the feeling you were being rushed. It is the way Sunday mornings should be spent, IMHO.

I surveyed the area, deciding what I was going to sample and went straight for the stuffed cabbage, thinking I would come back later for the french toast with hot maple syrup. Uh...nope. I got distracted by the sizzling omelets and got one with the works. After all of that, I went back for dessert....lemon meringue pie and these little chocolate something squares that was full of coconut. Yum yum. I skipped the tiramisu, but not by choice. I think I ate so much it went up to my ears. For the rest of the day Joe kept talking to me, but I somehow was not hearing him. I guess the glazed eyes and happy smile on my face told him he should just let things be.

The conversation was great. The topics were wide and varied. We went from BG's trip to Korea to fishing (hehe), to music and adventures abroad, to military experiences, to golf (Kekoa had some good ones) and of course, football. I certainly did my share of laughing.

I would absolutely do this again!

A-House -- in naming the characters in the "original" drawing, one has to realize the time frame in which it was commissioned (March-April 2007) and that the caricatures were supposed to be "generic" except for ST. 118. BowsForever:

Good one on McMackin, ST. I clicked.

NYUH: So you think Dowling and Mouton will be sharing playing time at left CB? I'm no football expert, so two maybe-obvious-to-more-knowledgeable-fans questions come to mind:

If Dowling and Mouton end up the top two CBs, could either play right CB, or is playing right CB "too different" from left CB for them to be most effective?

Also, I know McMackin's defensive style is to have depth and keep intensity high by swapping out players in certain situations, but would less plays necessarily have an impact on either player's "draftability"? I've heard from JJ (Mouton) and McMackin (Dowling) that these two particular corners have serious NFL potential.

  119. Kekoa:

Is it just me, or is anyone else having weird things happen on the blog?
I disappear into the blue deuce goose for several minutes each time I refresh.

Was thinking about some of the discussions today. The group entertained many ideas that centered on fellowship. Wanting to travel to the outer islands to spread our Aloha is paramount. So many times those who want to come visit with us are at a financial disadvantage in having to travel to Oahu. We just felt that it was time for us to bring Tsaiko cheer to our neighbors. Superferry would be an excellent transportation vehicle to convoy over and back.

    It created a lotta buzz!

    all of the bases?

  124. SteveM:

Kekoa -- no talk about your screen turning blue. It must be your imagination because the blog tweakers haven't done anything about it for the past 5 weeks...so there must not be a problem. :x No tell them you using one PC.

Interesting that you mention the neighbor island trips. In December 2007 a Warrior Beat Blog cruise (7 day Hawaii -- overnight Kahului, Hilo, Kona, and overnight Nawiliwili) was on the front-burner. Then the stove disappeared with the 3 other NCL ships. The target date for sailing was May 10 or 11 (depending on the ship). No ship now except the Pride of America. The opportunity for an inexpensive blog cruise seems gone.

Sigh... what a scenic non-stop party and cattle call that would have been!

  125. Mike Wedge:

  128. Kekoa:

    Esme ~

We didn't forget about cha gurl! We really did wish we could have planned something nearby, and then just happen to tappity tap on to your center stage.

There were regrets that we don't own a transporter room yet. Just think about all the away games we could get to as well as events like yours.

We talked about light rail to Ala Moana and how quickly we could travel there by Mag-Lev.

But mostly we talked about how we could encircle all of our Tsaiko Nation into one big blog party...oh try wait!...we got that on the schedule awwrready!

  129. Kekoa:

SteveM ~ I post, wait 10 minutes in the blue room, and then the hi-speed blog whips me back into the Tsaiko playroom about 15 minutes later.

The Superferry could be a unique opportunity to drive our own cars over on Maui. Shoots! 1st a Tsail-gate, and then a Maui Moo Call for dinner, followed by a Karaoke call to end the day!

What interesting tidbits has your survey revealed?

  130. SteveM:

gigi -- the rest of the world is doing just fine with their cruises. The loss is to Hawaii only. I am not planning on any cruises now because of cost, Peaches' vacation sked, and more cost. (You should have done the 10-day $650 cruise with Peaches and I last year. Fortunately, Long Time UH Fan and Tom Mui got theirs in too). Was looking in that price range for this month's blog cruise. Arghhhhhh.

In happier news, myki and sj-macro will be cruising Alaska. Makes us want to go again...

  131. gigi-hawaii ©:

Kekoa, the trouble with the Superferry is that sometimes the high surf results in cancellation of the trip. Very unreliable. More so than air flights.

  135. las vegas:

    gigi

Vertigo is usually associated with a problem in the inner ear balance mechanisms (vestibular system), in the brain, or with the nerve connections between these two organs.

The most common cause of vertigo is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV. Vertigo can be a symptom of an inner ear infection. Vertigo can be a symptom of an underlying harmless cause, such as in BPPV or it can suggest more serious problems. These include drug toxicities (specifically gentamicin), strokes or tumors (though these are much less common than BPPV), syphilis

  136. gigi-hawaii ©:

Vegas, yeah, I know. I have not had a dizzy spell in a long time -- mainly because I avoid those situations that would produce vertigo.

My 76 year old uncle has vertigo every month. Just bending over to pick up the newspaper from the driveway for instance can make him bedridden for days -- resulting in no golfing, going to games, or traveling.

    Sad, ya?

He wears hearing aids and has diabetes, too.

Two old ladies were outside their nursing home, having a smoke when it started to rain. One of the ladies pulled out a condom, cut off the end, put it over her cigarette and continued smoking.

    Lady 1: What's that?
Lady 2: A condom. This way my cigarette doesn't get wet.
Lady 1: Where did you get it?
Lady 2: You can get them at any drugstore.

The next day ... Lady 1 hobbles herself into the local drugstore and announces to the pharmacist that she wants a box of condoms. The guy looks at her kind of strangely (she is, after all, over 80 years of age), but politely asks what brand she prefers.

Lady 1: It doesn't matter as long as it fits a Camel.
