Safety is no longer first

May 10th, 2008
By Stephen Tsai

Le'Marcus Gibson, who is transferring to a junior college, might be the last of a category: the recruited safety.
As the UH defensive coordinator in 1999 and last season, Greg McMackin had a policy of not recruiting safeties. In 1999, McMackin decided to increase the team speed by moving cornerbacks to safety, safeties to outside linebacker, outside linebackers to defensive ends, and defensive ends to defensive tackles. Roster remains the same, lineup becomes faster.
As evidenced by the 2008 recruiting class, in which UH passed on some of the top safety prospects in the state, the position will be filled by cornerbacks.
Moreover, with the stakes established by the APR rankings and the skyrocketing airfares, look for UH to be more selective in recruiting in the South. Three of the four players who recently decided to leave — Gibson, Korey Reynolds and maybe Eric Shaffer (he has not been granted a release) — are from the South. It's going be way more costly for families from that area to attend UH home games.

* * *

It appears UH's softball season has come to an end. Even if the Rainbow Wahine reached today's championship round but did not win the title, they would have had difficulty receiving an at-large berth in the NCAA Regionals.
They lost eight of their final 13 games, and it appeared they would have been a one-starting-pitching team in the Regionals. Courtney Baughman had been hospitalized because of a shoulder injury.
And that's a shame because no coach works harder than Bob Coolen.
He treats Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium as if it were his first car. Cinderella team? He was the Cinderella coach, with a broom almost always in in his hands.
Softball might be run on a shoestring budget, but the team's shoestrings were always clean. The best maintenance is preventative, a belief Coolen practices — and past administrators should have observed.
Plus, we're all going to miss watching Kate Robinson play.

* * *

I've raved about the UH softball boosters and parents. They built a clubhouse, which is the finest condo in Manoa. Their postgame barbecues have led to the "fifth-inning drool," a time when the hibachi's smoke and tradewinds create the perfect aroma.
But softball receives quite a push from the men's volleyball team's boosters.
Down to only about 55 (from more than 300 during the Yuvi years), these fiercely loyal fans raise money by working the concession stands at baseball games. That's dedication: to volunteer at one place to raise money for another volunteer effort.
The booster club pays for three post-match meals a season, plus one of the best banquets among the UH sports.
Some notes from yesterday's volleyball banquet:
• Lauri Hakala is back in town. Hakala, who played only three years at UH, is three classes away from earning a degree. He is enrolled in summer school. After he graduates, he returns to Switzerland, where he plays professionally.
• Matt Carere also plays in the same league.
• Dio Dante appears set to play professionally in Turkey. Tony Ching helped set up the arrangement.
• Jake Schkud, the Warriors' only real senior this past year, is expected to play in Europe next year. He is scheduled to graduate next Sunday.
• Remember the grueling workout known as the Frank Street drill? Players used to have to run up the steep incline in a specified time. The drill is coming back in the fall. Mike Wilton promised the Warriors will be the country's most physically fit volleyball team.
• Further evidence NCAA rules are quite strange. Brock Hutchins is a UH senior this year. Next year, he will be a sophomore at UC San Diego, which competes in the same league as UH.

Can somebody — anybody —  please explain why there is a very-unsportslike section right in the middle of the sports main page on the Tizer Web site. I mean, why is there a "neighborhood" section between sports' breaking news and regular reports? As Nate Ilaoa used to say: Un-bee-leevuhbul.

I dunno if this was posted in my absence yesterday but this video has RGM in it.
Still looking for more mini-camp news of the Warrior FA's this weekend!

  4. al:

and i read the whole post.

  5. Stephen Tsai:

    Al:
Did you read my rant that I added at the end?
That's what happens when non-news types are in charge of a news Web site.

  6. jojo ®:

how about the website is funny

  7. gigi-hawaii ©:

ST, that's one of the longest posts ever!

    Interesting stuff.

  8. Stretch:

ST - what ever happened with the softball bracelet ceremony??

  9. LizKauai:

ST- thanks for the Warrior VB news. Good to hear Hakala is coming back to finish his degree! I hope he is doing well in Suisse! He really lit up the court here!

Hope the Tsai-kos can see the new blog and not get stuck like yesterday.

  10. Stretch:

Hakala finishing his degree is great news for him. BUT, would this have happened if there was no APR??

  11. LizKauai:

ST- re rant- typical multi-client corporate diversified bang for the buck- shotgun, one approach fits all thinking. Did you look at the other sections (I don't) to see if there are sports inserts there?

  12. Kekoa:

Hakala is an amazing VB player for his height. He's not much taller than Homey, and yet he can sky!

  13. Esme:

Wow, blog is crazy-packed with info this morning. Nice work, ST!

    Good morning, all!

  14. wafan:

    LizK . . .

    You are kidding, right?

Unless Cat is talking about the Warriors.

  15. Kekoa:

I was gonna drag some comments from the old over to the new, but I sked lose my place on dis new one. Like the old Kingston Trio song about the MTA, "I may never return, no I'll never return and my fate will be unknown."

Good Mornin’ to the early bird Tsaiko Ohana up and about this new day. The Blue Deuce Goose had me in a sleep-ahold most of the past 24 hrs. Hard to enter Tsaiko playhouse when doors and windows are locked and the only one with an extra key is Esme. Where is that woman anyway?

Gracious! No wonder I woke up with such a start ... Kekoa doing all that hollering an' all.

  17. al:

st....if you ask me, it looks like a marketing graduate came up with that idea. it is often referred to as "cross selling".

but, does it make sense....no. of course, if it isn't logical, it is. well, in the mind of someone trying to make an impression.

to us, those not as brilliant, we tend to see that which is relevant so we do get perturbed by these things that just don't make sense. after all, it is often said that one with brilliance lacks common sense.

i agree with you wholeheartedly. probably the same fellows who took a perfectly fine and easily accessible online newspaper and turned it into a mess by trying to "fix something that ain't broken".

its called "progress" by the powers to be and "ignorance" by the end users.

i could go on and on. but, that would take a whole day.

    ...nuff said.

  18. LizKauai:

ok. the neighborhood block appears in every section.

Kekoa- open a new window for each blog.

    ST,

    You have mail.

    al,

    Thursday at 7:00 PM?

  20. Kekoa:

Esme - Thank goodness you're here!...You got the only spare key to the playhouse. We still have folks that are locked out!

  21. al:

duffer.....actually should be wednesday at 7pm. mistake. forgot that whitey has his thursday hot date to attend.

  22. al:

    still on the same rant....
by the same token, why is it that often times a non-sports blog is promoted on the sports page?

i am not interested in the volcanic ash. isn't that the stuff polluting the air these days.

  23. Stephen Tsai:

    Oh, yes, I forgot:
Through the generosity of Duffer — and the crew at the California Hotel — we're going to have a pretty cool prize at the anniversary party. More details this week.

  24. FloridaTed:

    G'afternoon, gang, again.

The Tsai-Meister sure is in fine blog form, tons of great info, etc. But I would really like an explanation of the regression from senior to sophomore, if there is one.

    LizK, bighilofan2,

Thanks a lot for your efforts about the tickets, but please don't go out of your way, if can, can, if no, fine also. That crazy swamp actually scares me a little bit, lol.

  25. Stephen Tsai:

    Re: Hakala.
Lauri is a bright guy. He speaks about five languages. He gave yesterday's prayer in some European language.
Later, Schkud said that after all these years, he still can't understand a word Lauri says.
One cool scene was when Hakala saw Wilton in the hallway. Hakala said he's coming back to save UH's scholarships.

  26. Stephen Tsai:

    Ted:
Division I teams have a timeclock. You have five years to play four seasons, starting from the first day you enroll fulltime as a student. Hutchins started school, then took a break, and came back. To the NCAA, it's tick, tick, tick ...
But UC San Diego, even though it's a UC school and has incredible academic standards, isn't Division I. So the eligibility button was put on snooze.
Still, I mean, same league, shouldn't there be the same rules?

  27. Kekoa:

Liz - No can open window...Esme got da key and she no like share!

Nah, Nah! J/K...Esme's back on center stage this morning! Ready for the ole soft shoe routine cause the show must go on!...Unless she decides to throw in da towel too!

  28. wafan:

That is cool. Finishing their degrees to save scholarships for the UH. They grasp the concept of giving back. I hope all 'Bows, Rainbows, Rainbow Warriors, Warriors watch and learn.

  29. FloridaTed:

Lots of Europeans with somewhat obscure languages, world wide use that is, speak 3 or more languages, the Dutch and Scandinavians are especially famous for that and off course, the Swiss.

  30. J:

Finally, wi-fi. In Rome. Did a 7-hour tour of Vatican City today. More like a 4.5 hour tour with rest of the time spent standing in line or grabbing food.

  31. gigi-hawaii ©:

Ted, how many languages can you speak? German, English, and...

  32. FloridaTed:

    Tsai-Meister, (26),

Thanks for the explanation. I agree with you on that rule. What do you call that? The NCAA rubber band rule 101? And to think we've lost a national championship, because Yuval played for a semi-pro team without compensation, the only kind of team he could have played for at the time, go figga......

  33. gigi-hawaii ©:

J, I toured the Vatican in 1969. Loved the Sistine Chapel. Had an audience with Pope Paul VI.

  34. wafan:

    Mr. Tsai . . .

That makes too much sense. Therefore, it will never happen. You have to think irrationally -- it is a perfect example of the Peter Principle! That explains a lot of things at the UH, state and federal governments, businesses, etc.

  35. Kekoa:

FloridaTed ~ I noticed that the Germans speak French and English as well or better than their own mother tongue.

    BIG TIME SHOUT OUT TO

    (and it wasn't even close)

  37. al:

okay, with the loss of some players and possibly a recruit not making it to UH this fall.

would there be room for a couple of tsaiko sons?

  38. Kekoa:

Thought I'd better drag this thought from the old blog over to this one while things are still cookin' ~

Big Hilo Fan ~ Wen U get insiie da Swamp and staht trowin’ da geckos ovah da bleachas…no get your bananas in a bunch!..Bwhahahaha!

  39. Stephen Tsai:

Actually, it was Costas Theocharidis who was the culprit.
    Sort of.
Costas was on a team that had pros, but he never signed a contract, never had an agent and never received any money or other compensation. He also never really played.
The NCAA disqualified UH from the 2002 final four. But the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and the AVCA did not issue any punishment. Thus, Theocharidis still remains a four-time All-American, and the UH and MPSF record-holder in several categories.

  40. gigi-hawaii ©:

Barry must be mighty proud of Abe, as we all are!

  41. FloridaTed:

    Gigi,

Whn I came to Hawaii in 71 I spoke german, french and spanish. I've learned english in Hawaii. My french and spanish has become extremely rusty, not much use in Hawaii, except the occacional tourist.

  42. gigi-hawaii ©:

Ted, you didn't learn pidgin English in Hawaii?

  43. Jason:

One of the tough things for these players from the South is that they are coming to Hawai‘i straight out of high school. Seems like the JC guys have an easier job of transitioning, cause they are a little bit older and more mature. Not to mention, the chances of them sticking around are better, because transferring out after a year will probably mean going to a I-AA school.

Ack, stupid NCAA. They can't take the memories of our volleyball championship away from us! Those players — including Costas — earned it. :-)

  44. al:

    gigi
    i can speak some english.
    some sukoshi japanese.
original pidgin(now recognize as a language)
and am getting proficient at maui style pidgin.

pretty soon i could qualify as a multi-liguist.

    good morning!
    ohayoo gozaimasu!
    how you dis morning?
how you stay this morning, like eat at jack's?

  45. Jason:

Wow, I just experienced (in Safari) that thing where some posts load and some don't. I was wondering why Stephen was saying that actually, Costas was the "culprit" — that post seemed out of place. :-D

  46. gigi-hawaii ©:

Al, I am listening to Bobby Darin right now. All's right with da world!

Funny that you don't have an accent.

  47. al:

    parting thoughts....

i was really looking forward to seeing gibson lay down some hits. i wonder if his knee has more to do with it than we can imagine?

robinson should be forever remembered as a rare pitcher/hitter/position player and a work of perserverance. she virtually collected bench splinters her first two years here, but, to her merit kept working her butt off and shaking the splinters off to become one of the all time players of wahine softball.

i hope wilton gets to land some bigtime recruits. that has been missing from the lineup for several years now. its time to go back to the foreign market. men's volleyball really needs a shot in the arm.

  48. LizKauai:

I was surprised to discover that one of the most universal languages in Israel (where many people speak many languages) is SPANISH!

  49. Jason:

English is my first language. I can read, write, and speak (a little) Japanese (try not to go too heavy on the kanji). Can read and write (but not understand) Korean. Know a little bit of Hawaiian vocabulary from listening to Hawaiian music. Can talk small kine junk Pidgin, real embarrassing when try.

But math is the best language to know. :-)

al: I was looking forward to Gibson too, I thought he had the makings of a good player. But what can you do, attrition is part of the game.

  53. gigi-hawaii ©:

The most difficult language to learn is Chinese. I never could get the hang of writing the characters in college.

  54. FloridaTed:

    Tsai-Meister, (39),

Thanks for clarifying, (memory air bubble), the NCAA can often be more infuriating than any Government.

    Kekoa, (35),

That's because in german High Scools you must take 3 languages as minimum. It's over an 8 year period, (duration of HS). You start with english, or if you want to become a doctor or scientist, it's latin. Every second year you must add another language. After english or latin, the languages are elective. German High Schools are tough as nails, only 25% of pupils survive to Abitur (Graduation), a six week torture of grueling tests. If you pass, you'll receive automatic entry in the Universities in your State. That's why Germany has many secondary ways for education. I switched to technical college, that's how I later ended up on the Research Vessel "Valivia", plus I added professional diving school. Never regretted my decisions.

I hope that's not too much information, lol.

    Stephen,

As always I really enjoy your blog and will continue to be an avid reader (through my RSS feed). However with the changes to the Advertiser website, I rarely go to the site any more. It's WAY too busy and very difficult to find the content that I want. I find myself going much more to another local newspaper website and that used to not be the case.

I surely hope that the Advertiser takes a long and detailed look at the problems on the website. The content has never been better, the organization and presentation has never been worse.

  59. Jason:

FloridaTed: Wow! Just goes to show you what state our educational system is in right now. That sounds amazing!

gigi: I have a friend who is studying Chinese. Not only is she a senior after just two years at UH, but her GPA is 3.98. Very humbling when you find out how smart she is, cause she's a very quiet, unassuming girl.

  82. Kekoa:

FloridaTed - I lived in Germany for 5 years (Heidelberg) not only was I impressed at the number of languages the young people spoke, but the manner in which they spoke it. For instance. Not only could they speak the Queen's English, but they could also slip into perfect American English and even Spanglish! That came from hanging with the American Troops at the Discoteks and Gasthauses.

In the 890th Fermeldebattalion, within the NATO HQ, my counterpart spoke Italian, French, English, and knew all of the different dialects associated with German/Austriaian/Dutch provinces. I was surprised how the German vowels are pronounced they same as Hawaiian. We got along great splipping into our own pidgen version of Hawaiianisch.

  83. wafan:

How many men can truly claim they are the father of a whole lot of Tsai-ko's?

  87. d1shima [sez:]:

    al,

If memory serves, disownment would be the least of your worries!

  88. FloridaTed:

    Kekoa, (82),

Interesting, your stay in Germany. Heidelberg has a very old and good University. Yes, your right, the german vowels are exactly like the Hawaiian ones, that's the reason I could pronounce even the most complicated Hawaiian words from day one I was there, making people assume I was a Kamaaina. All the old german dialects were actual languages with their own writings, etc. for the longest time, split up in all these little fiefdoms of "Robber Barons". Not until the Prussians took over this mess, even the Rail lines had different sizes, became socalled "high german" the official language, structured by Goethe.

    Jason, (59),

Don't be too enamored with the European or german Education. The difficulty also has a dark side, it creates a different kind of elitism, liberal snobism, called the intelligencia. Regular people in the old days were labeled as the "Proletariat". Lucky that Germany also developed excellent apprentice systems, one of the reasons they had so many skilled workers for so long. Off course, todays cyber world is slowly changing all that. The top 20% are the same in Europe and the USA, were the difference exists is in the 21 to 70% section. Since you have to go to School until 18, regardless of what you do, there is a little bit more broadbased knowledge, but that is a necessity, you're surrounded by so many foreign countries, you kind of have to. The bottom 30% again are the same. I'm personally not very fond of Europe, I can't stand people who can't even defend themselves, but bite the hand that does.

The British are no different than Americans when it comes to foreign languages, they just assume the whole world speaks english, so why bother. In a way they are right. The British also ran the world for a long time. Lol.

Geez, Ted, get off the blog, what you got, diarreah of da finga?

  89. duffer:

    Liz,

    Got the email

    Jason,

If papa al disowns you, whitey and I will take you under our wings! :-)

  90. FloridaTed:

Hey, everybody ran away? O.k, I'll blather on then.

Germany has practically no elite private Universities, only private High Schools. But there it's the other way around. Rich people send their kids only to private High Schools if they can't handle the public Schools. There are no Junior Colleges to work your way into a four year college. You don't make it, you're out of luck. If you want a high degree, you have to bust bud from the start.

There is a pro and con for everything, I like the USA's second and third chances one gets a lot better. I love this country, warts and all, period.

  91. Jason:

duffer: Papas! Your son needs guri guri. ;-)

  94. FloridaTed:

Earth is my home and the USA my favorite State.

  95. duffer:

    Jason,

If al is willing to take it back on his next trip, it's yours! But we do need to explain the difference between AM and PM to al.

  96. FloridaTed:

To be a true American, it is a state of mind more than a nationality and I'm in an Hawaiian American state of mind.

  97. Jason:

To be clear: not a New York state of mind? (Oh geez, here I go with Billy Joel again...)

duffer: I'm afraid al might accidentally "dispose" of it... ;-)

  98. Kekoa:

Ted - You are a certified Tsaiko as well! True story about the Student section of old Heidelberg. While studying German, our teacher would teach in a classroom setting during the morning, and then we went to lunch at noon. After lunch we would visit different places to practice using our vast vocabulary like the nearest bar.

While in old town, the best place to eat were also known for large portions, and inexpensive prices because of the starving students. We got to practice our German, and the wait staff got to practice answering us in American english. It would drive our school marm crazy trying to correct both sides...Bwhahahaha!

  99. gigi-hawaii ©:

Sad story -- Steve Nash's beloved coach, D'Antoni, has accepted the $24 million offer from the Knicks because the Bulls offered only $18 million over 4 years.

He would have preferred coaching the Bulls because they are younger and faster than the Knicks.

    Money talks, bull shit walks!

  100. Jason:

    Watch your language!

  101. SteveM:

    Good afternoon everyone!

Re: post #89. duffer and whitey taking Jason under their wings? Flash... On Golden Pond flashed through my mind... :) Good thing Jason's ID is going to let him into more places soon. No need smuggle.

    FloridaTed:

Keep on posting; very interesting comments.

    Aloha.

  104. FloridaTed:

    ai-eee-soos, thanks,

Every once in awhile something moves my meter and I feel compelled to clean out my brain attic.

    Kekoa,

Seems like you have a soft spot for Germania. I actually grew up 30 miles south of Heidelberg, in Heilbronn a/Neckar. Big Army Base back there. Do you know that town?

To understand what Beer means to the Krauts, all you have to know is that Beer is covered under Food Laws, rather than Alcohol. The common Market in Europe wanted to change the chemical Laws for beer, trying to force the Germans to use the same additives in their beer as the rest of Europe. There were huge riots in Germany and they backed off. Because of that, to this day, german beer is the only country in the world left with zero additives or chemicals in their beer, 100% natural. I'm not sure about exports, but in Germany, - o -. That's why you rarely get a headache.

I remember, at 14 years of age, after we won an important soccer game, our coach rewarded us with beer in the clubhouse, go figure. It's weird over there, one can drink as much as one wants, nobody says a word, but stumble around drunk and you're looked down upon severely. You learn to hold your liquor at an early age, actually very dangerous.

  105. Kekoa:

Hi Steve ~ I'm sharpening up the clubs for Gigi & Hubby. I want them to have the "edge" on the competition on Kauai. Stretch said he might happen to be passing thru the Navy Marine Range and be our guest facilitator.

  106. gigi-hawaii ©:

Ted, I love Beck's beer imported from Germany! Had one a few hours ago, my quota for the day.

On other news, Cleveland is slaughtering Boston. Doc Rivers has 1 Technical. Get another one and he's gone!

  107. gigi-hawaii ©:

Stretch, that handsome buggah? I would be deeply honored. haha.

Hey, Kekoa, please -- no laugh when I miss da ball! Yeah, I know it stay stationary, but still, my arms might not cooperate.

  108. d1shima [sez:]:

    Hmmm...

Maybe I'll see if Mrs.d1shima wants a Mother's Day Brunsh at Sam Snead's. A little birdie says the "entertainment" might be pretty "interesting" ;-)

  109. gigi-hawaii ©:

Kekoa, I appreciate your offer to teach us. My hairdresser knows a pro golfer at Ft Shafter who charges $25 per HALF HOUR!

  110. Kekoa:

Ted ~ I know one thing, one "flip top" and I'm on my way to a pretty good drunk. I felt like each bottle was equal to one 6 pack American.

I had the mis-(fortune) of being hit by a Beer distribution truck. The fortunate outcome was that not only did they fix my car, but they delivered a case of beer a week to me for the last 2 years I was in Germany. I never told them I was leaving, so I know the next tennant must have really believed in Kris Kringle!

  111. gigi-hawaii ©:

    d1shima, do you golf?

  112. Jason:

Beck's is only 5% alcohol; are we sure gigi had only one? ;-)

Ah! So that's how we get gigi to the football games — get her to drink a Beck's at the tailgate, she won't know what's going on afterwards. :-D

  113. d1shima [sez:]:

    gigi,

No. But I know a good opportunity for humor when I see it.

  114. Kekoa:

Too bad they don't make those flip tops anymore. This was over thirty three years ago, so the bottling must have changed dramatically by now I'm sure. People really center their whole lives on beer and wine over there.

I never got into any kind of angry encounter with German drunks at a Fest or anything. They were always happy-go-lucky drunks, that loved to sing beer songs. My wife used to sing with them, and they were surprised that she knew the words! ...of course she was the only sober one! Even more impressing to them was her slack-key guitar solo's. Shoen...bitte schoen, they would say in amazement.

  115. gigi-hawaii ©:

hmmm. I wonder if it will take Boston 7 games to beat Cleveland. They are playing so junk. 43-24 Cleveland. 2nd quarter.

  117. HiFlyer:

Kekoa, you talking about the ones with da wire and corklike cap? They still getum, depends on which beer you buy.

  118. LizKauai (Treo):

Wow, Jason is such a fickle son! He jes follows da fuud! Come to think of it, Where da heck are my kids? We must be outa fuud.
Naah, I'm having pho after rehearsal.

  119. Kekoa:

Golf really is a state of mind Gigi. You have to run that mental checklist from head to toe and picture in your minds eye what the projected or desired outcome is to be. That's the reason why it is polite to be very still and quiet while someone is on the tee preparing to drive, or on the green stroking a putt. Absolute concentration is required.

Learning to put yourself in the zone helps, just in case someone sneezes or wheezes while you are at the top of your swing. Of course even the ku'u morning dew can sometimes be totally obliterated by someone breaking wind. That's when the entire day can be a struggle for your foursome because any hint of what took place will send everyone into hysterical laughter for 10 minutes each time it's mentioned.

  120. Jason:

SteveM: Haha, I was just looking at your site. I love it:

Don't believe rumors of rambunctious plots and ceremonies on or about May 17 in Honolulu.

LizKauai: Fickle? Oh know, I've been hanging around gigi too long. ;-)

  121. Jason:

    *Oh no

  122. LizKauai (Treo):

  123. Kekoa:

HiFlyer ~ Yes!...those are the ones. They said something about a sanitation issue with the exposed outer rim of the cork caused it's demise. Maybe they solved the problem. Like Primo, they'ree making a comeback!

  124. LizKauai (Treo):

  125. gigi-hawaii ©:

Liz, the last time I saw Man of La Mancha was at Kennedy Theater zillion years ago. The Man fitted the part to a T but my god, his voice was so raspy he couldn't sing. He almost spoke the words.

But Aldonza had a magnificent voice that brought me to tears and gave me goose bumps!

  126. Jason:

LizKauai: Not all the Tsaikettes. Brie is too young to be a mother. ;-)

  127. SteveM:

LizKauai posted this message we got from myki & sj-macro earlier this morning but I will repost it here. They are cruising the Alaska Inside Passage this week...

    Received 07:32 AM
Hi Steve, Liz & Tsaikos: we're headed to Juneau. Takes forever to get to HA and blog. Will have to check later where connections are faster. Vancouver was nice for two days. more from us later. sjmacro & myki

Hey, we miss you two and we wish we were there!

  128. FloridaTed:

    Kekoa,

They still make'em, but only in small regional Breweries, serving 3 or 4 towns. Those are the best beers. The german monks, (who else?), started the art of brewing in southern Europe, learned from the vikings and turned it into a fine art.

Jason, the 5% beer is only for export, nobody would drink it there. American beer is like a soft drink to them. Lots of GI's are in for a surprise when they drink german beer for the first time. On average, it's about 12%, stronger than most wines.

I could use a 'Halbe' right about now.

  129. LizKauai (Treo):

dangit...I wrote a nice descriptive reply to gigi about our La Mancha cast and hit the blue screen of death.

  130. LizKauai (Treo):

Ted- I love the N/A Karamaltz. Dark and sweet.

gigi- our 'man' is Greg Shepherd, who directs the KCC singers. Aldonza is Nalani Kaauwai Brun- and both have fantastic voices!

  131. BowsForever:

Best of luck to CJ at Falcons minicamp this weekend! Hope Rivers' minicamp went well -- didn't see anything other than a small news blip on him.

  132. gigi-hawaii ©:

I know Greg Shepherd! I was his music classmate at UH back in the late 1970s. He sings Bass. I heard him in Oklahoma as Judd (?)

  133. BowsForever:

Best of luck to RGM too...forgot his minicamp was this weekend.

  134. Jason:

FloridaTed: I only mention the 5% cause of gigi's posts. One beer and she starts swearing, flirting with Stretch... ;-)

  135. gigi-hawaii ©:

I drank a diet Pepsi after downing 1 Beck's so I instantly became sober.

  136. LizKauai (Treo):

gigi- Greg sings a beautiful low tenor too! Well, I guess that means anothe trip to Kauai for you! We open June 6 and play Fri Sat Sun for 2 weekends.

  137. Jason:

Yes, because Diet Pepsi bonds with ethanol. I think that might be a test question on my Chem final. ;-)

  138. LizKauai (Treo):

ok. off to my next meeting! bbs

  139. gigi-hawaii ©:

Celtics 15 pts under. I turned off the TV cause it's hopeless.

  140. Kekoa:

Ted - Half...that's what I got when I ordered a Pig to Kalua in Patrick Henry Village. The butcher gave me Halbe! I wanted ganz. Once he understood why, he wanted to know how. I gained his full confidence by bringing him to the imu to observe and then to help us with the process. He was really smitten by the Hawaiian style of cooking. The taste was truly incredible or Phantastisch he said.

  141. A-House:

    UH Volleyball stripped of title:

To this day, it still bothers me how the NCAA can create a new rule about participation in a league with "pro-players" in August, way after the chapionship awarded, make the rule RETRO-ACTIVE to a time years(2) in the past, apply it to UH, and strip their championship.

It burns me even more that UH did not file a "legal" appeal to the NCAA decision because it violates "common law" practices wherein a new "law" is created and making retro-active application. Like saying it's against the law to rob a bank, go back 2 years, arrest a person, convict him, and dump him in jail.

    WHAT'S UP WITH THAT????????????

  142. Kekoa:

Ted ~ After the Heidelberg Castle Illumination season, we'd take the Neckar River cruise south of the city down thru the locks and watch the 4 castle illumination in mid July. Spectacular! That would be down in your neck of the woods, I believe.

Of course it's the perfect time of the year to enjoy a cruise on any of the rivers in the area. Wine tasting along the Rheine, or in villages in the Rudesheim area...aahhh yes, those were truly some great times.

  143. Kekoa:

A-House ~ Is there a 9-1-1 to respond to? Volleyball alert? Title stripped? Whoa, whats the scoop?

  144. chawan_cut:

congrats to the UH baseball team for outslugging NMSU at their place, sweeping the double header today, 17-10 & 15-14.

and yes, i'm still mad about the NCAA stripping us of the men's volleyball title. I still think UCLA filed a complaint and pulled their $$ strings and made the NCAA check and change the rules. they should go back and research all the Bruins. i'm sure they got away with a lot more. (like their softball team and their "illegal" players).

  145. HiFlyer:

CC, thanks for the update. Good to see them win a doubleheader on the road.

  146. FloridaTed:

Hawaii being stripped of the title, especially retroactive, was one of the greatest travesties of justice in sports ever. I was even more mad that UH barely put up a fight on this, just basically took on the chin, lying down.

    Kekoa,

You sure are german officionato, it can be a lot of fun. The Germans love all things Hawaiian, the mystique is very much alive over there. Many influential germans came to Hawaii in the old days, the big difference from the american missionaries was that the germans liked Hawaii just the way it was and didn't want to change anything. A german was the first to put the Hawaiian language in writing, the reason the german and hawaiian vowels are the same. DPK can verify this, we once had a discussion about this on this blog in the very early days.

Matter of fact, my first, very close, Hawaiian friend, 90% pure, his name was George Kiesel, can't get much more german, name wise, than this. His great grand father was german.

  147. Kekoa:

HF - Good to see them win a doubleheader anywhere!

  148. FloridaTed:

Isn't the NMSU park a pitchers night mare? From the scores it sure looks like it. Kudos they pulled it out. Just what they needed before the tournament.

  149. oldie:

Regarding the Volleyball championship, I remember HF saying not to worry, he had everything under control, and was going through the appeal process. Now that we know he followed through on almost nothing, maybe JD can see whether the UH can open up the case with the NCAA again. I agree that it was one of the worst travesities by the NCAA. Maybe they would reconsider.

  150. Maverick:

RE- ST sez," Can somebody — anybody — please explain why there is a very-unsportslike section right in the middle of the sports main page on the Tizer Web site."

ST- Would you know in any capacity if coach Mac is using the Saban Rule?

Rather than traveling to the mainland and meeting face to face with players, meet them over a web cam.

Apparently, BCS coaches are incorporating this in it's fullest capacity.

  155. wafan:

Whoa! That White Screen of Nothing had me in its grasp most of the afternoon. i finally gave up and went to dinner. New owners -- Korean from California. They got my tempura sauce mixed up with the gyoza sauce. So, they offered me dinner on the house. I could not accept since it was an honest error. I felt sorry for the waitress. It really was not her fault -- the sushi guy was not doinganything and decided to "help" her. He really is a nice guy but does not belong in the kitchen or prep area. Oh well. Once we got that mess figured out the owner/boss apologized to the waitress and gave the sushi-guy the stink-eye.

His stink-eye was nothing compared to the look the waitress gave the sushi-guy. HA!

Yep, nothing like a ticked off Asian woman.

And, GG! Cursing? Wow! Not only the vicious and deadly stink-eye but a sailor's mouth to match!

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  156. HiFlyer:

Maverick, send an email to the editor about it, I already did. I asked him why is there a large section of non pertinent junk in the middle of the page that makes you have to scroll down to see the rest of the sports page, let's see if it will do any good.????

  157. bighilofan2:

    howzit gangee.

    ralvic,

da first time i posted here was after the SB, in early January. i tried to say something, i forget what it was about but you posted and i took it that you chewed me out a little, and you did make me feel bad. but I thought about what you said and kept coming back. and now i'm having a blast, i try to contribute to the good fun i enjoy here, my grand kids come watch sometimes, and i'm taking a grandson to Gainesville. i've learned and am learning alot about UH football. thanks in part to you and a bunch of peeps here, including d1shima.

so you'd be missing out because I've been watching who says what, and for the most part the peeps behave. i'll admit i sometimes don't behave too well but thats intentional, trying to make my new friends laugh and wonder if this guy is as wacked as he's making out to be. the ones who've had their panties pulled way tight, imho, are not you and d1. but then, some people would say my undies are bunched. kekoa seems to be peekin at me alot.

so relax and come share some more of your brillian insight, and laughter, an maybe every once in a while one of us will have something you'll find interesting and be glad you stopped by. PEACE & JOY!!!!

and remember what we got in common. GO WARRIORS!!

  159. Kama Krab:

    Split series not bad.

Trivia question from last night's Puns and PC's game: How many coaches are coaching teams in the state HS tournament who were former UH players? My question? How many and name them. I only know 2 for sure -Jon Viela (Maui), Corey Ishigo (Castle?) Is Ryan Kato one? Any takers?

Great post today, ST. The more I read about this APR thing, the more and more I dislike it. Of course, I am naturally distrustful of most NCAA initiatives, especially those have a disproportionate effect on non-BCS schools.

FloridaTed and Kekoa: re #146, I'm related to one of those Germans who came over in the latter half of the 19th century, and, consistent with Ted's observation, my distant relatives in Germany are still very much drawn to the islands and Hawaiian history/culture, probably more so than my other familial clans (except, perhaps, for those that are actually Hawaiian!)

  200. Moolelo:

Jason, in addition to counting 21 365-day years, do you have to factor in five or so leap days?

  201. al:

i wouldn't worry about the ball. i would be more worried about the flying clubs.

  202. al:

    jason

    aren't you missing 5 days?

  203. al:

oops....a bit late on that one. moolelo had the same idea.

  204. Long Time UH Fan:

The NCAA should balance this negative APR by setting a standard APR then rewarding schools that exceed that standard with an additional scholarship(s).

  205. las vegas:

    HMMMmmmmmm,
there seems to be a shortage of 'a sense of humor' in this blog the past few days.

cranky lady sulking, guy with funny name has feelings hurt and vows to never return.

if you leave and never return, that becomes your loss.

truthfully, i've not really paid attention to these two posters, cranky lady seemed to like the words "I" and "me" too much and funny name guy rambled and seem to be speaking mostly to himself.

there are no concrete rules (for the most part) on this blog so everyone is welcome to post or not to post, your choice.

once again, if you choose to not read or not post, your loss, some of us will miss you, some of us won't.

of course if you've already decided not to read the posts anymore, you didn't read this and i wasted 5 minutes typing this cr@p up.

  206. Jason:

Six leap days, actually. I'm choosing to use 365 days = 1 "Jason" year. Sadly, it still doesn't work, so I don't win. :-(

    7664 days, 12 hours, 46 minutes

<a href="http://www.timeanddate.com/date/duration.html"This site gives you the exact number of days, hours, minutes, and seconds between two days/times, with accuracy dependent on the amount of info you give.

  207. al:

give credit josh saio, he pitched a great game.

give credit to punahou for pulling out the bag of "tricks" who'd of thought that they would play small ball. it worked like a charm. you could tell that they incorporated the bunt in their daily routine. they caught the crusader defense off guard. had they communicated better it could have been different.

then again kiriu pitched the game of his career. i was telling the boss that there is always a pitching hero in the championship games. some kid tosses the game of his life. enter reece kiriu who just days ago got ripped by roosevelt.

  208. Jason:

    Er, This site gives you...

    Sorry, didn't close my tags.

  209. al:

long timer.....good idea but could you see the perennial top ten with this plan....
    stanford, harvard, yale, princeton, etc.

    that would be something huh?

100 new scholarships per year for those schools. they would file for bankruptcy.

  210. las vegas:

    LTUH,
    howzit! how you feeling?

  211. Jason:

The Ivy League schools don't give athletic scholarships.

  212. Kekoa:

Liz ~ Was on the horn w/Koakane wen he called you about the Kauai historical win! I could hear your scream from all across the ceded lands!

  213. Kekoa:

    Gigi ~

    RE: # 172

Bullet Bob from CHOICE FENCES is married to my cousin Palonga. Doesn't he look like the *Deal or no Deal* host?

Anyway, that's who I was recommending to Wafan for the fence work. Glad to see that you were a satisfied customer. I'll share a really funny story about how big hearted he i$ when I see you in the morning.

  214. Long Time UH Fan:

    Al,

Yes I see your point; was thinking more of the schools that "lost" scholarships. That there was some kind of mechanism that would give them incentive to regain those scholarships; seems like the APR was affecting the non-BCS schools more than the BCS schools.

  215. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Palonga??? You mean Sonya!

I know the Sabatinis from Marriage Encounter. We usually met at each other's home for sharing and dialogue.

    Great couple. Great marriage.

Please say hi to them. I haven't seen them in years.

  216. al:

jason i know that, but, it was just a play on theme.....
    whooo boy.

  217. gigi-hawaii ©:

Deal or no deal??? Has Bob shaved his head bald???

  218. Long Time UH Fan:

    Hi Las Vegas,

I'm OK ..today...Thanks for asking. Hope you are OK too.

  219. gigi-hawaii ©:

Vegas - cranky lady? At first, I thought you meant me! Then, I told myself that I am rarely cranky. haha

  220. Long Time UH Fan:

    Al,

You didn't go to Gengi's tonight?

  221. Long Time UH Fan:

    Hi Gigi

  222. gigi-hawaii ©:

Hi LTUHF! Thanks for agreeing with me about KS.

  223. Long Time UH Fan:

    Hi Kekoa,

Somehow your name appeared on my buddy list; I kept hearing "USA"....wife thought what the heck is that? LOL

  224. Long Time UH Fan:

    Gigi,

Have you dropped the diet? I did and gained back ten pounds...Darn!

  225. Long Time UH Fan:

    Las Vegas,

You gotta bring on those jokes...Miss them a lot

  226. gigi-hawaii ©:

Fan, nope, still on Nutri System.

I think it's cheaper than cooking regular food. Less electricity, less water. Less time to prepare, too.

Hubby is still on it, too.

  227. Long Time UH Fan:

    Hi Jason,

Hope you are acing those Math finals....

  228. Long Time UH Fan:

    Gigi,

OK, at least you are balancing the gourmet meals you and hubby have been indulging.. :-)

  229. gigi-hawaii ©:

Because we eat out once a week, I gained some of the 26 lbs I lost initially. But at least we have gained all of it back.

  231. Long Time UH Fan:

Last Saturday the family celebrated my mother in law's 100th birthday at the Hawaii Prince Court buffet. She was also on Channel 2 for her 15 seconds of fame as reported by Marissa Yamane on the 10 o' clock news. She commented about the number of grandsons she had and said she remembered when we could field almost two football teams...

  232. al:

    long timer....just playing around.
so, more non BCS schools getting whacked is it?

  233. Long Time UH Fan:

Al, I know you long time..haha...love to joke around...

  234. Kekoa:

Gigi ~ Yep...he is as cool looking as Bulla now. "Sonya's" Samoan name is Palonga or as some pronounce it Paloma. Her mom "Aloma" is 75 now, and they danced a few Samoan numbers ar her recent 75th birthday party.

Bob Sabatini is a hard working family man. He would do a good job for you wafan, even we didn't give him a heads up.

  235. al:

wow....a lot got posted while a dozed off.

lt......too busy with the seven new family members. tomw, we have another mother to celebrate with.

  236. Long Time UH Fan:

One grandson was happy;, he called me up ...hey grandpa..5 in a row... but the other grandkids cheering for SLS not too happy.

  237. Long Time UH Fan:

Hey Al, congrats...are you going to have names for them?

  238. Long Time UH Fan:

    Happy Mother's Day!

  239. al:

are you guys hungry about now?

no leftovers tonight we had sumo ramen to go. next time i think i need to order a double order.

i keep thinking about that food las vegas had the other night with the yonamine's.
one day i would like to set on the sushi bar at yohei's and order omakase style until i fall backwards off the stool. oh after the mrs. yohei's special desserts of course.

its like a box of chocolates. you never know what yohei san is going to make for you.

  240. gigi-hawaii ©:

Kekoa, when I saw them last, their 3rd daughter was still an infant.

  241. Long Time UH Fan:

We had Sun Noodle Ramen and Ninja Sushi tonight.

  242. al:

they are all spoken for....imagine that.
    i'll keep a chocolate wahine.
trying to convince boss to keep a black male too.

all three colors on this bunch; 3 yellow, 3 chocolate, and one black one.

  243. Jason:

Long Time: Past few days, I've been cramming for Math 302 on Tuesday. Gotta get an 80+ to get an A. Gonna be tough... Right now, printing out notes and practice exams for Math 373 on Monday. Thank goodness that is open notes. Gotta start prepping for Chem 162 on Tuesday too, I haven't done much studying for that class. At least I'm free from Tuesday at 2! :-)

  244. al:

ninja sushi at the old daei building? is that don quijote now?

  245. Long Time UH Fan:

    Al,
Many moons ago we had a part Lab; named him "Blitz"; wife had black poi dog...yup.. named him "Blackie"...no imagination, yeah

  246. Long Time UH Fan:

  249. al:

  254. Long Time UH Fan:

    Al,

How you like the Seven Duels ?

  255. al:

    lt
we have had our share of breakfast of champions in maui. i been testing the corned beef hash all over the state and must say jack's is right up there with the best. of course, the boss' corned beef hash patty is tough to beat.

just remembered i may have to do breakfast fomw or stand in line with everyone.

    hmmm..

  256. Kekoa:

Long Time UH Fan - One day my grandson was showing me what he learned at his 'puter class. He installed that *USA* audio portion to my Instant message box. Just never thought about what it can do to drive people crazy on the other end! Sorry 'bout that, I'll see if I can take it out and install GO WARRIORS instead.

  257. Long Time UH Fan:

Knowing the boss, her corned beef hash must be ono; it's hard to come up with a good recipe for that one.

  258. al:

    hey gigi....happy mother's day!

  259. Long Time UH Fan:

    Kekoa.....LOL

Nah, it doesn't bother me at all; just caught the wife by surprise...she didn't know who was yelling "USA" ; then I told her it was you ...so no problemo...

  260. al:

of course it must go with eggs over easy!

  261. Jason:

Long Time: I'm not al, but let me chime in: if it weren't for the fact that it's only six episodes long, I'd probably stop. But since I'm already one-third of the way through, I might as well stick with it. Considering there are Seven Duels 2 and 3, I want to see how Seven Duels 1 turns out. But I'm not crazy about the show, the writing seems awkward and the actors mediocre. Hopefully it begins to improve...

  262. al:

kekoa...so what are the mother's day plans at your place?

  263. Long Time UH Fan:

    Kekoa,

You know I was tempted to IM you; but then you would've turned me in to AOL as a stalker.

  264. Long Time UH Fan:

    Hi Jason,

Just chime in; more comments the merrier. Yeah, it's hard to beat Sonny Chiba as Jubei...

  265. al:

i kind of like the new twist to the legend. interesting how the kid brother is portrayed in this series as being pissed off at older brother "super hero jubei".

interesting side kicks as well. i wonder what surprise the girl will eventually play. probably a ninja in disguise i am guessing that poppa yagyu sent her along.

  266. Long Time UH Fan:

    Al,

OK now you're making me hungry; Boss just cut me a slice of Ani's apple cinnamon bread for snack....

  267. al:

i think they picked this new guy because he kind of resembles mr. chiba. big japanese.

  268. al:

make sure you toast it golden brown and a nice amount of butter to go with it.

  269. Kekoa:

Da Blue Deuce Goose left me on da Loose all day long...until now. 'Cept I kept another screen up just in case. So now let's see if I can cook dat Goose!

  270. Long Time UH Fan:

    Al,

In the other Jubei series the brother was his ally...Yeah so that's a twist...

  271. Long Time UH Fan:

Hiroaki Murakami has appeared in other Taiga dramas, such as Hideyoshi, Mushashi, etc.

  272. Long Time UH Fan:

    Kekoa,

Next time I see you tell me more about your adventures in getting the guys behind the lines out... Mahalo

  273. Kekoa:

Yes! Yes! Yes!...Kekoa scores! Da Blue Deuce Goose goes down in defeat, 2 to nothing!

I would like to thank myself and my persistance. I would like to thank all the Blue screen buds out there for their support. No thanks to the feedback crew for making us suffer this past month.

ST Happy Mothers Day!...maybe they'll put things back where they got 'em.

  274. Long Time UH Fan:

Time to go moe moe. Big day tomorrow..

  276. Jason:

I'm off to bed too, good night.

Happy Mother's Day to all our mothers out there. Especially to our mother Tsaiko, Stephen Tsai himself herself.

(Funny that for a list of XHTML tags, they allow a deprecated tag like strike, when del is a perfectly good tag that was already in use before.)

  277. al:

i didn't know until just now that the series was filmed in 2005.

  278. Kekoa:

Ani's bread is broke da mout good stuff LTUHF!...and yes, I promise you more adventures of our sleeper agents in the field coming up at the next T-gate Long Time Fan. I met with your favorite Congressman not to long ago about those men.

Sadly, some died during their active duty time, and others were never seen again. A few are retirees, or have passed on, but there was never a doubt that all were dedicated to the US of A.

  279. Kekoa:

Al ~ Sorry I didn't answer your #262 query. This blue influenza posts this msgs back to the future sometimes. Anyway, re the plans. First...there's the Gigi and Hubby Golf project.

I know it'll be a challenge, but I will give it my best shot. Stretch should be a very able assistant. We have a strong advantage using the Tsaiko card. She will bedazzle the field and distract them with her Granny Muumuu.

After I've imparted at least a 3 part game plan in their bag of tricks, we are having lunch at Monterey Bay Cannery at Pearlridge.

Later, I was scheduled to take my boss and Pops to dinner at Roy's. Instead, some people we knew in Europe called and asked for us to come up to their place for dinner and a few CR shots...nah..j/k! These folks used to be part of our traveling road show. They just wanted us to come tune up with them like old times. Sounds like fun, so off we go!

What you got planned for your boss?

  280. SteveM:

    Happy Mother's Day!

  281. Kekoa:

...and Happy Mother's Day to Wena!

    Good morning, Gang, again.

I'm taking the wife down south on a beach exploration cruising, driving over the sky bridge, past Brandon. There's a 50 mile long road, over the sand bars, between Manatee and Ft. Myers. Picnic and romance, that's the ticket for Mothers day.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to all the present and future moms on this blog. We males appreciate you as the gate keepers from one world to the other. Hope you all have a great day, Aloha.

:D Good Morning Tsaikos and Warrior Nation!!! :D

    and… ❤ ☼ ❤ Happy Mother’s Day to all the Tsaiko’s Moms and Tsaiko-Moms!!! ❤ ☼ ❤

I know this will sound a bit sappy, but please bear with me … please.

First, I wanted to echo jojo’s greetings and wishes (Post #79) to all the Tsaiko_Moms (Tsaikettes) on the Warrior Beat! She mentioned gigi, Liz, Esme, StacyJ, Ronnie, Rob. I know she missed several including herself, jojo, Peaches, JaM, Mrs. A-House, Lori, Faye, Tracy, I_Believe, Myki?, fish?, and all the other Mrs.’s (al, d1, homey, bulla, BigWave, Barry M, Kekoa?, BHF2, 99-, etc.). Now I am certain I’ve missed some Moms, and there are a few names that I’m not sure about as being Moms. So I hope you’ll excuse & forgive any omission. Also, Kekoa (281), BHF2 (283), and others have already said this but…

There is one special, really special Mom that I do want to acknowledge. She is the wonderful wife of our Warrior Beat blog host, ST. After all, ST is the (founding) father of this ‘ohana. Therefore, by default (if nothing else – you can’t escape us…), this very caring person shared her spouse with us, and has graced this blog with her occasional visits. Yes, I’m speaking of ❀ Wena!

On behalf of all my Tsaiko brothers and sisters, and uncles, and aunties, and cousins, and other ‘ohana and friends –

    :D ❤ ❀ Happy Mother’s Day Wena!!! ❀ ❤ :D

Special Aloha to all da Moms. Where would we be without youse?
Where indeed? Puka socks, no mo clean bebedees, confined to one beer and bbq diet (hmmm, gotta think fo' little while about if dat's a bad ting), stuck inda house 'cause no can fin' da keys, and finally.....

    only "twiddling thumbs"!!!

    heheheh

  315. d1shima [sez:]:

Nah, fo' real (not fo' fake)

Hoping that all the Moms have a great carefree day!

Happy Mother's Day to whoever's out there!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good game last night. Proud of the Gentlemen of Kalaepohaku.

I felt that if they could pull off another error-free game, the crown would come their way but alas, it was not to be. Hats off to the Kiriu kid for bouncing back from the shelling he took earlier in the tourney. As al said earlier, he pitched tough and spaced out the SLS hits well. Credit the Puns braintrust with coming up with the right recipe offensively to come out with that one big inning.

That said, with the end of the athletic year nearly at an end, here's hoping that the next AD will be able to carefully examine the coaching staffs of all the teams that will be leading the SLS gentlemen in the future.

  318. brew808:

Ehhhh LIZ!!! You broke the blog!!! :D

Actually, you don't have to post the entire URL - most times, you can truncate it and the link still works....

d1 - Never mind the bvd's, the socks, the sustenance, the keys... Imagine.... without "moms", there wouldn't be ... "d1" or a brew!!!

  319. LizKauai:

of course... it would be brew to yell at me first...

  320. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

A Solid Second to Brew808's post at 6:13 am about Wena Tsai. Her new pre-school will add a lot to our children's success in school in the years to come.

Several of us are celebrating Mother's Day by pixking up HI-5 containers tossed along the roadways later today before going out for an early dinner somewhere.

Great four days of softball. It was fun to hear the yells and screams from across the street from the high school tournament plus listening to the Bowsball games with Don Robbs while watching the women play.

Congrats to the Lady Techsters - they came in prepared both physically and pschologically.

BTW - our own Kate Robinson made the All-Star Team as did Richie-Anne Titcomb & Audrey Andrade.

Last at-home weekend of baseball for the season coming up - then it's down-time for UH sports until August when the Wahine Volleyball team kicks off their 2008 season - alas, the date is not yet posted on the UH website.

Have a great time at Tuesday's Cattle Call at the Yakiniku Camellia. Eat twice as much as I'll be in the dentist's chair from noon to 1 pm having two fillings replaced and won't be chewing much for several hours afterwards.

    brew,

Sadly (or fortunately for her, maybe) I don't think I can fit in the gigi golf recon mission today. Mrs. d1shima nixed the idea when she caught wind of the boys' plan to provide the sustenance this morning.
I'm sure Kekoa will provide a more than adequate recount of the event.

    If he survives!

    heheheh

  323. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

    Whoops!! pixking = picking

  324. LizKauai:

Happy HI5 Day, Doc and Dr. Doc!
I usually spend my birthday (from the days when I could only get off work on a weekday during my birthday) in the dental hygienist's chair but missed this year because of a company function. Now I forget when my appointment is!

Thanks again for supporting the teams in the stands!

    Have a great dindin!

  331. LizKauai:

now gigi- remember that golf is like yoga with a club to extend the influence of your chi.

You will get a lot of information about the physical things to remember (and that memory comes with practice and patience). Mentally, it will be more like yoga than football.
    HAVE FUN!!!

  332. gigi-hawaii ©:

haha here I am all decked out in muu, safari hat, and sun glasses and hubby says, "you don't look like you're going to golf."

gotta pave da way for other women!

  333. LizKauai:

Woohoo! #2 son just gave me a MD Card with a cute note and lunch money! (This is a big deal...!)

  334. LizKauai:

gigi- take a belt along to hike up your muumuu if you need to. Works better than clothespins.

  335. gigi-hawaii ©:

nah, Liz, my muu is narrow so it won't billow out.

  336. brew808:

now gigi- remember that golf is like yoga with a club to extend the influence of your chi.

Funny. I read that as "Yogi Bear... with a club"!!!

  337. brew808:

Wait! ..... that would make D = the Ranger, and Kekoa.... Booboo?!!!

  338. al:

    HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

  339. gigi-hawaii ©:

yoga, chi, meditation -- all I know is I gotta hit da dam ball with da stick.

We were watching golf on TV and observing how the guys hold their left arm. Not stiff as my hairdresser advised! Hmmm. What will Kekoa say?

  340. LizKauai:

gigi- take the belt. You might need to hike it up to get the proper "stance".

  341. al:

    kekoa....a very brave man indeed.

i am picturing gigi in her gigi-hawaii golf attire. i keep getting flashbacks of an andy bumatai video.

    anyone else?

well, if its attention she wants, she will certainly get that if anything.

  342. brew808:

Good one al....

  343. gigi-hawaii ©:

haha hubby complimented me -- "you look WEIRD."

  344. gigi-hawaii ©:

    well, gotta leave now. bye.

I/we appreciate all that you do and contribute to making this a wonderful place!

Some really sweet person sent me a Mother's Day greeting making me an honorary mom. Thank you for that bright spot in my day(week)! :) :) :)

    Gigi and Kekoa-

Have fun golfing! Gigi, even if not sunny, still need to wear sunscreen. That will get you every time.

  349. LizKauai:
