Thanks to Forney, root for Pedey

May 13th, 2008
By Stephen Tsai

Kynan Forney was a soft-spoken offensive lineman at UH.

No wonder he kept mum about the $35,000 donation he made to the football program.

Only a handful of former UH players have given back to the school, for a variety of reasons. It's nice that Forney, who had a brief career here, found enough lasting memories.

* * *

Fans of the UH football program should root for Erik Pedersen, who announced he was transferring to Division I-AA Portland State.

Pedersen is leaving in good academic standing. According to people in the know, if Pedersen goes to Portland State and remains in good academic standing through the fall semester, he won't cost UH any APR points. It's part of the rule for those who transfer from one four-year school to another.

Wasn't "Pedey" a name of one of the characters on "Remember the Titans"?

  3. homey ®:

    Oops, forgot.

    NEW BLOG!

  4. homey ®:

So is that why UH won't release Eric Shaffer until he is in good academic standing? Or was this mentioned already?

  5. Maverick:

ST - Do you hear from Coach Glanville ? Any major changes for the better at Portand St. for this coming season. ?

The Altitude channel on Satellite was broadcasting some Big Sky games last season.

  8. homey ®:

ST - Does Portland St being a member of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision a reason for no APR points being removed?

  25. homey ®:

  26. Bowzo's Rule:

    al:

you goin to waimalu? i am so confuuuuuuuused :(

  59. Garret:

Another mention of the Florida player that was shot yesterday. Normally this player would still be in high school, but he graduated early so that he could have the Spring semester at Florida. A lot of Texas recruits graduate early so that they can get a semester of college early and go through Spring Practice.

A University of Florida football player is recovering after being shot in the shoulder while at a Tampa area-park.

Florida coach Urban Meyer says Gator defensive lineman Matt Patchan is expected to fully recover.

Patchan was shot Friday night. Details of the shooting are not yet known.

The 6-foot-7, 265-pound Patchan enrolled early at Florida in January after graduating from high school.

  60. Garret:

Article about which rookie QB is ready to start right away. The writer took a shot at Colt, but he'll eat his words in 2 years or so.

Colt Brennan - WAS - Sixth Round (186th overall selection): A project for the future, he will compete for a backup spot. In a counter move, Jerry Jones signs all of last year's Georgia defense, making Brennan completely ineffective against the Cowboys D.

  61. SteveM:

I am sitting here on the other side of town eating school lunch too, surrounded by boxes of 20" iMacs and MacBooks. Could be worse...this could be a Thursday when I would be only 3 blocks away from Camellia's...close enough to walk over and roll back if I didn't have to stay awake after... :(

    Have a good lunch folks!

  62. Garret:

Had anyone heard about the close friendship between Natasha Kai and Colt?

Yesterday, noted attractive Olympian and tattoo enthusiast Nathasha Kai put on quite the show, scoring three goals in the U.S. women's soccer team's 6-0 win over Canadia, who still try to dribble with hockey sticks.

Kai has few other enticing eccentricities:

What makes the Hawaiian forward crazy? Bearing in mind I had about 13 minutes to explore this topic, here's a short list: she stretched out her earlobes so she can wear 0 gauge ear plugs, she celebrated a goal during qualifying in Mexico by doing the Cha Cha in front of 27,000 Mexican fans, she refers to her occupation on her MySpace page as "RoCkStAr," she spent afternoons at Hawaii catching passes from new Redskins QB Colt Brennan (whom she calls "my best friend"), she just finished choreographing a dance routine to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" that she plans on teaching to her teammates to allow for pre-game performances, she wants to be a police officer when she quits the sport, and she once burned out on soccer and schoolwork and quit everything for a year to cook, wash dishes and wipe down tables at a college cafeteria, staying in shape by playing rugby with a men's team.

  63. Garret:

Chad Owens had nice stats in his latest game.

WR Chad Owens led all receivers with 11 receptions for 114 yards and one touchdown. Owens would also add a rushing touchdown; his fifth of the season.

  64. Garret:

The only bad thing I read about Chad Owens from that game was that he fumbled a kickoff return and his fumble was returned for a TD. The other team kicked off after that TD and Chad wasn't able to catch the kickoff.

That point was more than evident in the final couple of minutes as Colorado lost two kickoff returns. One was fumbled by returnman Chad Owens and returned 14 yards by Utah's Kelvin Morris for the final points with 44 seconds to play, and — to really cement things — the ensuing kickoff was not snared by Owens and Whittaker fell on it to prevent Colorado from running another play.

  65. LizKauai [Believer]:

    BigWave96744 - MAHALO!!!
Kenny is a great guy! His parents have an empty nest and you still see them volunteering at track meets, PTSA, school carnivals, booster clubs - the whole 9 yards. Wherever there is something going on "foah da keeds", dey stay ride deah!

I cheered extra loudly when he made a nice tackle at the Sugar Bowl. Here he was last year- redshirting most of the season and then gets called up for special teams for the last few games. WOW- talk about experience! Then the INT at the green and black game. I am looking forward to seeing some fantastic plays come the new season.

    GO KENNY!!!
    GO WARRIORS :!:

  67. Garret:

Interesting analysis of how BCS Bowl games are normally blowouts.

using margin of victory - the most quantifiable indicator - the BCS bowl games have been less competitive than the pre-BCS Big Four bowl games. And before you argue that the BCS has brought us closer to finding a National Champion, Wasserman found this: If you compare the Division I-AA championship games (beginning in 1978) to the BCS championship games (beginning in 1998), the margin of victory is closer for I-AA title games. Further proof we need a tournament. Max’s analysis and charts after the jump.

I found the margin of victory of every Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, and Orange Bowl from the past 30 seasons, the last 10 of which have been under the BCS system. (Just so it’s clear, the margin of victory is the number of points between the winning score and the losing score. So for this season, the margin of victory for the Orange Bowl was three (Kansas 24, Va. Tech 21).) Once all these values were entered, I found the average margin of victory for the past 10 or BCS years (1998-2007) and the average margin of victory for the 20 years before the BCS (1978-1997).

The purpose of the data is to show that the although BCS system may spark controversy nearly every year and may be loathed by college football fans, it’s not creating better games either.

  68. Garret:

I forgot to post this story here, though it went on my free play blog.

This girl was the only athlete from her high school to qualify for the Texas state Track & Field meet…and she won the Texas state TEAM title all by herself! On the first day she won the high jump, placed second on the long jump. and placed third in the discus. Om the second day she placed 2nd in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes. She earned 42 points and the 2nd place school earned 36 points. And she is just a junior, so she could do even better next year!

  69. Garret:

    Hi Liz!

I try to not think about the food that I'm missing in Hawaii. Anyway, Lori made me 2 spam musubis for lunch today, so I do not feel deprived!

I actually completed all of my work goals today--wrote 2 chapters of my proposal, talked to a long list of government people, etc. I get a lot more work done early now because the people I work with are in DC so they start their day *early*.

Lori's parents arrive tomorrow so I'm going to try to get even more work done so that I don't have to work too hard when they are here...be back tonight.

  70. BigWave96744:

    Garett,
I think Chad Owens career as a punt/kickoff returner is pretty much over....
I think he should stick to being a receiver.
It's very uneasy reading about the number of fumbles he has had since turning pro.

Chad is such a great guy with a big heart but in the pro's turnovers are not exceptable.

  71. Esme:

    Garret, thanks for the links!
Bummed to read about CO. Had such high hopes for him!
And ... that bit about Natasha Kai and Colt is odd. What does that mean? Hmm....

  72. Esme:

Hi, homey! And to all who are heading for the CC ... eat up! Wish I could go. Have a great time!

  73. Esme:

  75. Laieikawai:

  78. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Hi Esme!
gigi- sounds like Natasha and Colt were having a "oneoftheguys" kind of fun. I kinda feel that way about being a Tsai-ko... you know, safe place to hang out withabunchaguys.

oops- my tomboy days are not over yet!

  79. Laieikawai:

    LizK's got it right.

  80. LizKauai [Believer]:

duffer- I dunno about I Believe. Hmmm. lemme call her up.

  81. LizKauai [Believer]:

duffer - I got her voicemail.
Speaking of I Believe- I put up my poster of destiny today. Sometime last season, she went to one of the VB games, I think, and got me a Warriors poster! Then she went all over the mainland and managed to bring it back with her to Kauai!
The last mile, being the longest, she actually mailed it to me before taking off again on more adventures. I couldn't wait to get it framed. I push-punned it up on the wall at work next to the copier. Ahhh... football... ahhh. Warriors. I think Jason Rivers is the handsomest one in that picture. He is wearing his cute smile!

DINNER AND KARAOKE CALL – June 19, 2008

Meet visiting Lo-Cal Tsai-ko Chapter friends Ronnie and Rich2176 when they are both are on Oahu on Thursday, June 19, 2008.

Starting at 5:00 PM — drop by after work, talk story, have cocktails, have dinner (optional), and karaoke. A very leisurely evening with no agenda except the blog 5 F’s and karaoke. Gotta leave by 2:00 AM though.

    RSVP at:
    http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=eEyq8dXfy_2fHHPIGCSQuo2A_3d_3d

Also more info at the survey site above and a description of possible buffet menus (if sufficient interest). We need a count for Genji whether we do the buffet or not, so please RSVP on the survey, email me, or post on the blog.

  84. LizKauai [Believer]:

STEPHEN- re the softball team travel - did UH check out departures from the neighbor islands?
Did anyone check the flights from Kauai to Phoenix? US Air has a direct flight. The reservation form let me reserve for 8 people - the largest number it would take. The plane leaves at 10:30pm and arrives in PHX at 7:38am.

This would give the team just a short add-on hop to and from Kauai.

    Just a thought.

  85. gigi-hawaii ©:

Big Wave, wasn't Shakti a UH volleyball player?

  86. Bulla:

buuuuuuuuuuuuuuurp, there, that said it all :)

  87. LizKauai [Believer]:

gigi- college tennis player, as per BigWave96744.

  88. Garret:

    Laieikawaii,

Yes, I interpreted that article as Colt and Natasha Kai were good friends. I think that is awesome, as they are two extremely prominent Hawaii athletes that made the national stage. They can sure relate about the scrutiny and pressure they have put on them. The thing is, I never heard about that until now...amazing that they could keep their friendship so private given the spotlight both are under.

  89. Garret:

    BigWave,

I think that Chad is an awesome punt/kick returner, but the turnover problem does concern me greatly. The NFL won't tolerate that at all, but roster spots are often dependent upon being on special teams.

The good news is that Chad is doing awesome as a WR! He's also been quite effective running the ball.

  95. Kazz:

    RE: Kai and Brennan.

Makes perfect sense that they have a friendship together. Both were stellar UH athletes and both are some of, if not, the two most recognized Hawaii-related public figures in the modern age.

Now, if only Natasha Kai would convince Colt to get some polynesian tattoos that would be key!!!

  96. LizKauai [Believer]:

jojo- does that mean you made it on time??? No short hikes this time???

It was just perfect to see al, Mr. and Mrs. A-House, A-Sport, beau's boss, bulla, DPK, jojo, prideperiod, ST, and Wreck. Awesome people, great stories, belly full laughter, and plenty protein.

A-Sports and A-Joe did it again with their masterful artistic craftsmanship, as they created one-of-a-kind tokens of friendship for a selected two. It brought invisible tears to my eyes.

Thanks bulla for letting me know that ice cream is only for dinner patrons. i was ready to break the ice cream machine.

gigi- in person... xs-homey is actually 6'4" and can't stop talking ... bwahahahaha! nahnahnah.

    gotta run to my R.meeting....

  122. Kazz:

    Gigi,

ESPN will realize they took the wrong games, as it will be difficult for Fresno State to be a BCS buster when they end up with 3 losses this year.

  123. TChahng:

    LizKauai,

Duh... I have two packs of Sapporo Ichiban Ramen in my cupboard along with Nong Shim Ramyeon (da spicy one).

I thought you were talking about beer!

  124. FloridaTed:

    Kazz,

From various reports earlier in the year Hawaii could have five games on ESPN. It all depends how well they're doing. That's why we have so many TBD times. The schedule above are the games cast in stone. ESPN does a lot of shuffling during the season. At least let's hope that this holds true.

  125. mctruck:

All the more reason for the Warriors to upset Florida at home. Do that, and it will turn some ESPN heads and a mad scramble to get UH on the tube. GO WARRIORS!!

  126. Stephen Tsai:

I don't think I've ever spent a Saturday night in Boise.

  127. FloridaTed:

Hopefully they'll pick up a lot of games on ESPN 360, so I can watch them on my TV, rather than Computer.

  128. gigi-hawaii ©:

What will the time difference be between HI and Idaho in October?

  129. Stephen Tsai:

The Boise game is rough for both teams. The Broncos are at S.Mississippi the week before.

  130. mctruck:

Speaking of Ramen....I was watching this asian film last night and these guys were slurpping-up a bunch of noodles and it made me so hungry for ramen. It was like 10pm my time and quite frankly a little late for me to consume any kinds of food, but what the heck....I open my cupboard and tore open a couple of ramen packets and had a whale of a time with my chicken flavored ramen and added to it some tobassco sauce, whoweeee!!!, broke-da-mout.

  131. FloridaTed:

    mctruck,

Absolutely right. If they'll beat Florida, the flood gates would open and we're instant BCS darlings.

  132. FloridaTed:

    Tsai-Meister,

I'm glad they're flying in also, that should even the playing field, except for that headache inducing blue turf.

  133. Stephen Tsai:

Daylight Savings time runs through Nov. 2, meaning it will be a four-hour time difference. So, yeah, 3 p.m. start. Of course, Tizer management might move up deadlines again just to be weird.

  134. mctruck:

What?????, no mo FSU/UH??? dem guys at espn are disrespecting da Warriors.

  135. gigi-hawaii ©:

ST, I thought Kazz said the game would start at 8 pm. So that would mean 4 pm Hawaii time.

  136. lopaka43:

Just an odd thought that has been bugging me.

Re: Garrett's earlier post about the girl at the Texas State Track meet who was the only athlete from her high school to qualify and won the team title because she finished first or second in five events.

Is this the exception that proves the rule that there is no I in team?

  137. mctruck:

    Florida Ted,

That's right....UH going have to play their 1st game like their seasons aspirations rest on it.....play that game like their lives depended on it...ALL of Hawaii depends on their winning in da Swamp.

  138. d1shima [sez:]:

    Stephen,

    Saturday night in Boise?

That streak should remain intact, shouldn't it? Or are you planning to stay an additional nt after the Friday UH game?

btw, I have spent a Saturday nt in BOI. Unless you're into C/W, once you're done at Appleby's, that's about all she wrote.

  139. Jason:

While everyone was having a good time eating at Camellia, I was bombing my Math 302 final. That's okay, school is done for the next few months.

I'm always glad to hear Kynan Forney news, especially great news like this. He's one of the forgotten UH alumni in the NFL. Drafted in the 7th round, even though some graded him as high as a 4th or 5th rounder. Mel Kiper said, "As a late-round pick, tackle Kynan Forney has a chance to make the team." He ended up starting 8 out of 12 games his rookie year. He's pretty much been a full-time starter from the start. He has really made a career for himself, even if most NFL fans couldn't tell you who he is or what team he plays for.

And I really liked Curtis Lum's Q&A with Dave Matlin. Perfect timing too, since Hawai‘i Bowl renewals were just mailed out.

  140. Kazz:

Is a Saturday night in Boise like a Saturday night in Lahaina?

  141. d1shima [sez:]:

Good on Kynan Forney. Much needed $upport.

  142. d1shima [sez:]:

All game times listed are Eastern, not local

  143. mctruck:

One interesting thing I noticed is that if you check Florida's schedule on Rivals, their whole schedule as far as tv exposure is, "TBA." whereas, UH is as indicated with Boise St., so I guess nothing is written in stone, eh???...UH has a bunch of TBA's as well.

  144. Jason:

Esme: Did you get the e-mail I sent?

  145. FloridaTed:

    mctruck,

That's what I'm saying, Florida and Oregon State is HUUUGe for us. Just like Fresno, sizzle or fizzle??

  146. boner:

Thanks Kynan! While we all read about mega-millionaires giving back generously to their schools, UH, quite frankly, has not produced a great number of them. Why the general reluctance by former athletes to contribute more, no matter how small the donation? It's no secret that certain factions will try their best to hord a lion's share of the donation, regardless of the donor's request that it be designated for a specific purpose.

  147. FloridaTed:

The WAC has a chance to make huge statements this season and could move up substantially on the prestige meter, if they'll actually "play-up" for a change as a league, not just one or two teams.

  148. Sacwarrior:

I attended a class reunion in Vegas last Sat evening where a former UH Basketball coach was the guest speaker. He scooped that in the next few weeks a very large sum (Sugar Bowl size) will be donated to UH athletcs by a very prominate Las Vegas-Hawaii businessman. I really hope this pans out.

  149. FloridaTed:

As Ferd so aptly stated in his article, the WAC needs to borrow a page from the soft ball play book. Respect will come, but it takes more than one good season in Football.

  150. al:

    great cc.
mahalo to asports and ajoe for the wonderful commuter mug.

showed it off to the boss just now.

  151. d1shima [sez:]:

...on the other hand, it's good to know Hawaii doesn't appear on the ESPN/ESPN2/ABC schedule any less times than Wofford and Appalachian State

  152. Garret:

Awesome to hear about Kynan's donation! Great job of giving back and setting an example for the other NFL Warriors...even more impressive that he did the donation quietly instead of trying to publicize himself. Although, the publicity is good because of the example it sets for others.

  153. Stephen Tsai:

OK, guess which four other former UH players gave significant donations to UH.

  154. Kazz:

    Stephen Tsai:

    Ma'a Tanuvasaa
    Mark Tuinei
    Jesse Sapolu
    Issac Sopoaga

    just guessing...

  155. Stephen Tsai:

    Nope.
    Rich Miano
    Jason Elam
    Kent Untermann and ...

  156. Stephen Tsai:

... Emlen Kahoano, who donated a truckload of beer to the UH trainers.

  157. ai-ee-soos:

    A C Carter made a significant donation.

  158. Kazz:

    ST,

Surprised a little but then again not really.

So this is the literal "handful"?

  159. boner:

AC will always be one of my favorite all-time 'Bows for that reason,

  160. Stephen Tsai:

    I meant football.
In basketball, A.C., Artie and RainbowCliff have been big supporters.

  161. Stephen Tsai:

Jeff Portnoy didn't play, but he helped the team significantly.

  162. Stephen Tsai:

Kids today just don't remember how they used to throw the alley-oop to A.C. And then there was Alika rolling off a double-screen to hit a 3.

  163. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

Stephen: Can you please confirm that ESPN1420 will be broadcasting the Wahine game this Friday. Mahalo Turned on the car radio in the middle of the announcement, but I think that's what was being said.

Also, could you please ask your tekkie folks why it is that a blog name I used yesterday in another publication - not this one - transferred over to here last night. That publication uses the same program as this one - or at least it looks the same - so I assume that deep in the bowels of the Internet my e-mail address resides and that triggered the other name - Rootsrundeep.

Next, is there anywhere on O`ahu where those of us who know very little about football can take a non-credit class or workshop in how to watch the game and discuss it with some degree of intellgence with others either here on the blog or in the real world Your May 10th post about safeties and other defensive changes for the most part flew right past my eyeballs.

Perhaps someone could put together a workshop which includes bringing in a coach or two or a former player and then charge a reasonable tuition which could be used as a fundraiser.

Went up to the UH ticket office today and got the scoop on football away game tickets and some suggestions on how to get seats together. Will post that info first thing tomorrow. Nice folks in the ticket office.

  164. SteveM:

Greetings to Sacwarrior, who posted #148 at 1756. Long time no see...

  165. Stephen Tsai:

    Doc:
If you wish, we can bring in a coach for lunch to discuss football.

  166. oldie:

    Hi ST!

I have a suggestion on trying to keep this blog on topic with Warrior football.

I know in the past you tried to limit off topic discussions to the night time hours, your so-called "free time". The bloggers (like we always do) ignored you, and we still have a lot of off topic posts. I don't mind the posts. In fact, I find much of the off topic stuff very interesting. However, same Warrior fans avoid this blog because they think there's just too much off topic stuff going on.

As I have said in the past, this blog works on a lot of different levels. You have a bunch of good friends who like to gossip, tease, exchange greetings, talk story about fuud, see each other at CattleCalls, tailgates, Karaokegates, etc. You have some bloggers who practically live on the blog. Then you have the casual ones who visit to pick up the ST tidbits that are thrown our way. Also you have the serious ones who only want to talk and read about Warrior stuff. Those blog visitors get upset when there's a lot of non-football stuff the wade through. And it's true that at times 70 to 80 percent of the posts are off topic.

    How about trying the following:

By honor system only (meaning each blogger is responsible for policing him/herself), everyone should make sure that at least half of their posts are somehow related to Warrior football or at least UH sports. For instance, it's okay to say "Hi, LizK, What's up in Kauai?" but there should also be a post by the same blogger such as "I wonder where ST is snooping for Warrior news today?"

Not sure if us bloggers would listen to you, but it might be worth a try. Hey, it might even increase the blog entries and read hits (may make your bosses happy).

  167. TChahng:

    ST,

RE: Post# 133 Daylight Saving. There's no savings in daylight saving time.

    http://www.webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/index.html

  168. TChahng:

More like Daylight Time Shifting. From the same website:

    >>
    Spelling and grammar

The official spelling is Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight SavingS Time.

Saving is used here as a verbal adjective (a participle). It modifies time and tells us more about its nature; namely, that it is characterized by the activity of saving daylight. It is a saving daylight kind of time. Because of this, it would be more accurate to refer to DST as daylight-saving time. Similar examples would be a mind-expanding book or a man-eating tiger. Saving is used in the same way as saving a ball game, rather than as a savings account.

Nevertheless, many people feel the word savings (with an 's') flows more mellifluously off the tongue. Daylight Savings Time is also in common usage, and can be found in dictionaries.

Adding to the confusion is that the phrase Daylight Saving Time is inaccurate, since no daylight is actually saved. Daylight Shifting Time would be better, and Daylight Time Shifting more accurate, but neither are politically desirable.

    Doc,

some of us here have been stumpin a long time for tix to the Fla game in the [UH section] Swamp. I am good for 6 because Florida Ted would like to sit with us if we can arrange it, and LizK has joined da Hilo 4 posse. we have 5 tickets, God knows where but probably in the heavens above the visitor's section. Actually, I'm planning to call Florida on 5/21 8:30 am EST to see if can firm up da info.
And actually, I can get 2 tickets close to the team, but dat is not gonna happen. all for 1, 1 for all.

    an like mctruck said:

  170. Mrs. A-House:

    Warrior Football comments first:
A-House ohana committed early to attending first game of the season. Florida Ted's comments/heads-up re Florida fans (young and old) having a reputation for being the nastiest ever has given me reason to feel a bit stressed...I'm hoping that Prideperiod can be there, too. Ideally, I would thoroughly enjoy the game without fear sitting between Pride and Wreck with Homey behind me and D1Shima in front of me..."magnificent four" they call them in some circles. I call them "ironmen protectors, extraordinaire". Just kidding...

Mahalo, Homey for your #98 post critiqueing the cc. Indeed, lovely Jojo and equally lovely A-Sports were there early to greet us. Al lost his bet and managed to enjoy his lunch with only one fork. Just to show off, Homey did an outstanding job wading through his selections with only one chopstick anyway. The man is amazing!! Again, I want to thank all of you who were there for a wonderful afternoon of fun, food and memories made.

May I make a suggestion. (Al, what do you think.) If we eat there again, is it permissible for the early arrivals to start grilling up a platter of kalbi...then if others are still slow to arrive, start grilling up plenty teriyaki meat, then the chicken, then the pork. By doing so, attendees, as they arrive, can fill their plates with other selections, sit down and re-heat their meats on the grill and eat lots more. The owner might throw me out for a stunt like that, BUT that's why I won't even think about doing that unless Pride is there, too. I like to plan my strategy for the next time once I scope the layout. Food was tasty, but my glasses fogged up with grease and I was sweating big time. And they say eating is not a sport...

Mrs. A-House -- your suggestions to organize the Camellia fires is refreshing and a very good idea. I can visualize the scenes you must have encountered today...big smile :) Was today your first time at a Camellia cattle call? I don't recall because I've missed a few lately. I remember my first--sharing a fire with Al and the Kid...I had my 1/3 (charring spicy pork), Al had his half, and the Kid had the rest. Picture Bulla, Wreck and Adddahknowjoe sharing the other fire...

BTW, when leaving, did someone collect to pay the bill as a group or was it all individual?

  180. SteveM:

Mrs. A-House -- don't answer my last Camellia question. It's a trap... heh heh heh.

  181. oldie:

    Thanks, St!

Of course, everyone will continue to ignore your instructions.

This is already the best place for Warrior fans. Imagine how much better it would be with more Warrior discussion in addition to all the other stuff that goes on.

Bloggers like LizKauai, BigHiloFan2, Garret are great examples of fans who enjoy the comaraderie of fellow bloggers but also contribute a lot of Warrior stuff.

  182. Jason:

Football? Oh yeah, that IS one of the Fs. I always forget that one. ;-)

  183. oldie:

    Hey, Jason!

Always enjoy your insightful analysis of the Warriors, the draft, etc. You put deep thought in what you say. Some of us no longer have the gray matter to think things through the way you do. Some of us never had enough gray matter to start.

  187. oldie:

    Jason,

Maybe size does not matter, when you get older, some things don't work as good.

  188. FloridaTed:

    Oldie,

Your suggestion is well meaning and has merit, on the other hand, there is only so much new stuff about football one can discuss, before it gets real repetitive. I look around on other blogs sometimes and there usually are 2-5 new comments and that's it, unless there is stupid flaming going on.

On our blog it's the off topic stuff that keeps this place going year round, even when there's nothing new in football or other UH sports. I'm sure you've noticed that when there's something interesting about the warriors, the discussions spike up imidiately and pretty much stay on topic then.

This blog is more like a big ongoing tailgate party, where people come in an out and talk story or whatevers. This is Tsaiko-Town, where everybody knows your name. Pull up a chair, sit down and just flow with it. This town has become too big to make everybody happy all of the time, just like any other town, except no crime here, and everybody is friendly.

  189. chawan_cut:

    Stephen,

I spent a cold Friday night in Boise. watching us get smoked 69-3. watching timmy break not the TD record but the INT record. didn't help either that it was maybe 30 degrees and boise bleachers were aluminum.

speaking of A.C. and alley oops. i knew the dynamic duo would be special when during their first year, 1st or 2nd game of the season, alika threw a baseline inbounds alley oop to A.C. for a dunk. too bad it was against one of those "all star" teams and it wasn't on TV. i don't think the news guys caught it either. if they did, alot more people would've come out to the games earlier on in the season to see them. i also remember the midnight ohana that 2nd year where they actually dressed up as batman and robin(with actual bat signal spotlight and all) and alika threw a similar alley oop pass from the stands behind the basket. A.C. dunked it in his batman suit. crazy. ah the good times. i need to go dig out that kansas basketball vhs tape somewhere and watch it again.

  190. chawan_cut:

  192. oldie:

    Florida Ted,

I know what you mean. Right now Warrior news is sparse, but this blog keeps on trucking. That's why I suggest a 50 percent rule.

Yes, talk story about other things, but also talk about something related to Warriors, or UH sports, or something related.

Honor system so if someone talks more off topic than on, no big deal. Just a thought to try to make this place even better than it is.

  193. Kekoa:

Let's see now. Spring training is over. UH vs Gators many days away yet.

Speculation runs rampant about the following UH football subjects:

    - Tickets to game(s).
    - Team Transportation to game(s).
    - Travel problems for fans game(s).
    - Players that have been cut/transfered/dq.
    - Media changes in personnel reporting game(s).
    - Media coverage of former UH players/season TV schedule.

    Wow...must be bed time...Zzzzz.

gigi: Great, and I had a craving for Italian today. Instead of Assaggio, I had Kit 'N' Kitchen at the old 99 Ranch.

  205. al:

    wassupdoc aka rootsrundeep,

the reason your other tag, "rootsrundeep" was picked up on this blog is that the "leave a reply" section has a memory. if you post at the "daily dish" as "roots...." and don't change it when you get back here. then your post will be made on "roots..." instead of "wass.....". i am sure we all figured that you were one of the same since you mentioned that last year.

as far as football basics/classes back in the day the community colleges did have a class like that. not sure if they still have it? however, there is a book that you may find of interest that will educate and bring you up to speed. it is entitled, "football for dummies", er, no pun intended.

finally, regarding the softball broadcast schedule. yes they are broadcasting
go to this site for complete info.

i heard someone may soon take over the old 99 ranch market area. meanwhile the food court is thriving.

wah kung has good chinese food. taro w/kau yuk is the bomb there.

ah, but, after the thai cattle call we've been promising a-sports.

  214. Jason:

gigi: The "Moanalua Ethnic Village" is still open. 99 Ranch is gated off, but the food court is still open, and there are a few businesses.

BTW, al, do you still exercise at the gym?

  219. LizKauai:

gigi- It was a glance into the freezer, scour the shelves and throw in some fruit last minnit supper. The saute pan still had drippings from some breakfast some time ago. Korean style - just heat it up to kill the germs ;-)

I try to have certain things on hand for last-minute cooking - capers, sun dried tomatoes in olive oil, extra virgin olive oil, real butter, anchovies, fish sauce, grated cheese, half and half, fresh garlic, onion, fresh lemon or lime and ginger. With those things on hand, it is easy to whip up something simple and tasty with just basic ingredients like pasta or a piece of meat from the freezer.

"I'm not pretending to be a scout, but LB Jordon Dizon's height at 6'0" really stands out. No matter what scheme, it seems universal that all teams like tall linebackers. Seeing a 6'0" linebacker is like seeing a 6'0" quarterback. You wonder if he's going to be able to see over the line of scrimmage."

    http://www.acmepackingcompany.com/2008/5/14/509160/did-the-draft-help-the-lio

Hmm. Isn't Jordon going to be standing back far enough to see???

  220. al:

wow lizk....such extravagance. maybe you go in the kitchen and help prepare some gourmet stuff on june 19th eh?

i like my salmon lightly salted, pepper, dusted in flour very lightly just to let the flavors bind to the salman. saute with olive oil, pressed garlic, dry white wine, and finished with capers n butter. i'll remove when it is still "pink" it should be done by the time you eat.

    served over saute spinach.

okay, bust out the miso ramen i am hungry now.

  221. gigi-hawaii ©:

Liz -- sounds good! I am too lazy to cook... and wash pots and pans.

  222. gigi-hawaii ©:

I wish I had a robot cook! I already have a robotic vacuum cleaner, am looking to buy a robotic lawnmower now.

  223. Jason:

Ideally, you'd like your linebackers 6'2", at least. Same as QBs. But if the guy's got enough speed and good instincts, then it's all good.

Wah Kung was my Dad's favorite place. They have some good stuff.

ANCHOVIES!!! That's what I needed tonight, and we didn't have any. I wanted to throw some garlic and anchovies in some olive oil, toss in a few florets of broccoli, and toss with some pasta. But no anchovies. So I went to Kit 'N' Kitchen. Spicy parsley chicken in garlic olive oil. Not bad, actually.

Funny story: one time I went Safeway, saw that anchovies on sale, so I bought a couple cans. Opened one up later, only to realize that they weren't anchovies, but sardines. Yeah... didn't work. I still have the other can of sardines, with no use for them. :-D

  224. LizKauai:

al - tasty fuud for FOOTBALL FANS is a must. I mean, if you go through the trouble of cooking at all, might as well be able to think - hmm... I made this fresh Caesar salad dressing from scratch and saved $10 from what it might have cost in a restaurant!

Pasta Alfredo is the same thing - and with all the yummy frozen tortellini and ravioli from Costco, the freezer food turns into a gourmet experience in less than 20 minutes!

I'm all out of ramen... dang...

  225. al:

gigi....wah kung is very good chinese food and yes, reasonable. like anyplace it is what you order that matters. a lot of chinese go there, good sign.

thai call as with all cc's are spur of the moment. i did promise asports we'd do a thai call and that would be next. then again, james wants a cc next week since he couldn't do this one today. we'll definitely give you a heads up.

it will probably be at phuket thai in the ward area.

jim? yah i know a jim, too? haven't seen jim in a while though.

  226. gigi-hawaii ©:

Eat the sardines with teri sauce and onions with rice wrapped in manoa lettuce! My mom made it for us kids.

  227. LizKauai:

Jason- get some Triscuits, a little dab of mustard and slap dem sardines on 'em. Yum!

  228. al:

i haven't prepared a caesar's from scratch in years. people would request my caesar's all the time.

  229. gigi-hawaii ©:

my books are being delivered tomorrow morning. yippee!

  230. Jason:

I liked the anchovies. Didn't like the sardines. ;-)

Mmm, I should tell my Mom to make what gigi said. Only with gochujang instead of teriyaki. After all, she's Korean. ;-)

  231. LizKauai:

gigi- rule of the kitchen - the cook does not wash dishes.
I can visualize you as a good gourmet cook. It's surprising that you don't like to cook!

  232. gigi-hawaii ©:

assaggio prepared our caesars at tableside tonight. Veddy good.

  233. al:

or tomato sauce, onions, pinch of sugar, one can of sardines with the oil. with rice of course. tasty.

or shoyu, water, sugar, gr onions.

hey wait a minute i've a few cans in the cupboard.

  234. gigi-hawaii ©:

instead of terisauce use kalbi sauce. cook the sardines in it with the onions. place on hot rice. wrap in manoa lettuce.

    brok da mout

  235. gigi-hawaii ©:

i believe Koreans call it sahm sa

  236. al:

    wow,,,,gigi in pidgin.

  237. gigi-hawaii ©:

aren't sardines supposed to be good for bones?

  238. Jason:

So we just had Mother's Day. Gotta schedule a Mother's Day dinner for my sister and our Mom. And then there's my birthday dinner. So to save money, we decide to join them together. But Sundays and Wednesdays are out, cause I have church. Ends up Mondays through Wednesdays are out, cause my bro-in-law just started classes. And Mom works Thursdays through Saturdays. Hmm, are there any days left?

So we're going to have lunch on Memorial Day, since nobody will be working or going to school that day. Only problem is where to go. Since my sister and Mom are terribly indecisive, I get to choose where we're going to go. I so would like to say, "It's my 21st, let's go to Assaggio." One of my friends hosted a party there for her 18th; it was my first and only trip. It's about time to go again, yeah? ;-)

But I'll probably pick someplace a little more family friendly. So, any suggestions for a party of 7? No Japanese/seafood — we always go to Gyotaku, plus my sister has gotten enough scoldings for eating fish while pregnant. And no Korean — we always go to Yakiniku Camellia.

  239. Jason:

We use gochujang or miso gochujang. We like da sweet and da spicy.

  240. gigi-hawaii ©:

I love Assaggio and Champa Thai.

  241. LizKauai:

al- when I make Caesar dressing to keep for awhile, I just leave out the egg and it lasts pretty long. Garlic, anchovies, fresh lemons, extra virgin olive oil, grated cheese, freshly cracked pepper.

Jason- Sam Sneads had a variety of food and a very nice view!

  242. Addahknowsports:

Uh oh.....I'm in trouble. With Oldie's new posting rule, I may never be able to post again. And since this may be my last, what the hey, I'm going for it.

    Okay, here goes...

I had a great time at the cattle call today! It was good to see those we don't get to see that often, during daylight hours anyway. Thought there were seven listed on SteveM's site, but as usual we expanded to fit two tables. Of course, we ended up playing musical grills. I coulda sworn Pride was sitting in front of me, next thing I know, he's sitting behind me. I coulda sworn Homey was sitting at the complete opposite end of the table. Next thing I know, he's sitting in front of me. Of course that did not distract me from whacking the kalbi. This time I didn't smoke out the whole table. Sorry if I splattered anyone.

What a wonderful lunch bunch. Thank you everyone!!!

  243. al:

i would say paesano's in manoa mktplace. its your 21st ! and break a bottle, too.

    or bravo's.

  244. gigi-hawaii ©:

how long did the cc last today? Our dinner lasted 2 hrs.

  245. koakane:

Imho when there are times to contribute to fball discussions I will put in my 2 cents. but more often I have been in agreement with much of what has been posted. If I feel I need to say something that is of another opinion I will. if it is too out there I simply choose not to respond. I value all opinions and I may may not agree but at least its up to me to say so.

I have enjoyed this format since becoming a "regular" lurker. The atmosphere is nice and overall everyone seems to get along. Like anything there are differences but that life.

Any way this is my reply to "oldie". I may not be as eloquent as Florida Ted but my sentiments are very similar.

ST keep or change it this is your blog and I know you have said it belongs to everyone's but their needs to be a leader and you are it. whatever happens it is our choice to continue or move on. at this point in time I choose to remain a loyal supporter and regular.

  246. al:

    asports and ajoe

gotta thank you all again for that cool commuter mug. in fact, i christened it tonight.
    thank you very much.

ask ajoe when he can break away for a thai call. its been awhile since we chowed on that stuff too.

  247. Jason:

Ugh, not Bravo! That place is mediocre. Except for the garlic bread balls. Those are heavenly.

  248. al:

lizk....please add red wine vinegar to your next caesar's salad. one to one with the evoo is good. reduce some lemon in this case.

    and no forget the croutons.

  249. LizKauai:

sports- just by virtue of your name, you can post anything anytime. I think the 5 F's apply and only one of them is Football.

One of the reasons I keep posting when the season is slow is because of the ohana here. It's always good for a laugh in the middle of a hard day at work. And it keeps ST's stats up as well.
Besides, we need to work the software bugs out before the season starts and the topical stuff starts running hot and heavy!

  250. koakane:

and you guys talking fuud only one thing to say

YOU GUYS ARE KILLING ME bwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  251. gigi-hawaii ©:

I always order the chicken canneloni or seafood linguine at Bravo. Veddy good.

  252. Jason:

The best thing about turning 21 — can buy white wine. I want to learn how to make a good white wine sauce.

  253. al:

bravo's if you don't want to spend too much.
otherwise, paesano's no ka oi. they also have half order for the light eaters.

  254. Addahknowsports:

Okay...you guys are talking about food. Sorry, but I'm baaaaaaack.

    Al-

It was just our little way of saying thank you for doing the cattle calls. Those days are special. I'll see if I can go down there and kidnap Joe on the next cattle call day. I may need some Tsaiko back-up.

  255. al:

cc was bit longer than two hours.

  256. al:

asports....that could be arranged. we do have a few tsaiko's bigger than he.

  257. Addahknowsports:

Loooooove capers and lemon sauce and loooooove anchovies.

  258. gigi-hawaii ©:

haha and dieting is but a distant memory...

  259. koakane:

now I can not get oxtail soup out of my mind. do not know why but I crave for one humongous bowl now. aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  260. al:

jason it starts with a good base. chicken or seafood?

the best seafood base is from the shells of the crustaceans and clams.

  261. LizKauai:

al- will try that suggestion. btw- it aint a caesar w/o the croutons, eh?

oldie- I may be naive but not too many "blog" communities show physical support the way this one does. It's not an "on topic" bash and trash, it's a place where real people do more than talk about sports. Let's not put up rules for rules sakes just to attract people that might make Tsai-kos like Addahknowsports feel unwanted or off topic.

  262. al:

    koakane.....zippy's 24/7.
    i'll meet you down there.
    mwahahahahha

  263. Addahknowsports:

One day we should all go down and take over Kapiolani Coffee Shop.

  264. LizKauai:

koakane- I er, uh, had oxtail soup at Tip Top for breakfast today... first time in months!

  265. gigi-hawaii ©:

Al, let me know when you do a Thai call. I might be up for that one. I think I prefer Thai food to Korean.

  266. Addahknowsports:

Yup, Al. The flavor is in the shells. I didn't think I'd be hungry until tomorrow lunchtime, but now I am.

  267. Addahknowsports:

Midnight cattle call? Two cattle calls in one day?

  268. Jason:

    al: Depends.

  269. gigi-hawaii ©:

hmmm I was just thinking that Al has never hosted a Tsaiko party in his home...

Am I the only one to do so?

  270. LizKauai:

Ok- the USAir direct flights to Portland for the Oregon State game are already sold out. I am not waiting. Priceline, here I come!

  271. Addahknowsports:

    Liz-

    You go girl!

  272. al:

no jason.....i don't wear them. i am still continent.

  273. al:

    yah gigi.

not enough parking at my place.
    no central ac
    no 52" bravia
i am afraid i fall short to your abode.

  274. LizKauai:

OK. Got my plane tickets. United this time. Now I just need some GAME TICKETS!

  275. LizKauai:

United on Priceline $600 RT including trip insurance.

That should pretty much guarantee that tomorrow Hawaiian and Alaska Airs will start a price war with $300 RT flights to Seattle.

    Whatchuwannabet?

  276. Jason:

So party at gigi's place, Liz and al arrive early to cook the gourmet meal. Sounds good to me! When do I show up?

  277. gigi-hawaii ©:

Haha Jase, you gotta go church so how can???

BTW, I posted pictures of our dinner party at Assaggio's on my blog -- if you're interested.

God, I am sooo fat, gotta go easy on these din-dins.

  278. LizKauai:

Jason, I defer to al - I'll be his sous chef...

    Ok.
Nitey nite. I can sleep better now knowing that I will see my little Lilu again soon!

  279. gigi-hawaii ©:

I am considering replacing my light beige carpet in the LR, FR, and hall.

What do you think of green? good or not good? hides stains but might fade.

    decisions decisions

  280. LizKauai:

    I like hardwood with rugs.

  281. gigi-hawaii ©:

yeah, Liz, so do I but hubby has bad feet. He prefers carpet.

  282. al:

we have green and we have taupe.
we are former beige carpet owners.
american carpet one, see glenn "yama", tell em al sent you.
pick a grade, pad, shield. all carpet is not equal. don't scrimp on this stuff.
pick a couple of colors. he'll come out and bring samples to see if they are really what you want. this is important so you know what matches. must be done mid day.

you pay for what you get.

  283. gigi-hawaii ©:

Yama was hubby's music classmate. He sold us carpet in the past. We are thinking of hiring Wayne's Carpet cause the labor is cheaper. My sister-in-law said American charges double what Wayne does.

Al, how do you like the green? We are thinking of kelly (dark) green.

  284. al:

    okay....done packing.

    tomw

    muu call

    w/whitey, duffer, stretch n frens.

    tiffany's bar n grill
    dinner (?)
    and beverages
    tba (eta 1900)

    join us.

  285. LizKauai:

al- have a good one and say Hi to white and duffer! I'll see them, hopefully, at the end of the month!

gigi- I put some pix of my nephew up on my blog - you will fully appreciate the fact that he is a Damien grad!

    Nitey note for real!!!

  286. LizKauai:

    white=whitey

  287. al:

yama is a great guy and he services you. we had our carpet changed twice out of warranty.

    we had a lighter green.
most of the areas are now taupe which actually looks better than the green.
too dark a green will show a lot of lint, etc.

one day i have another story for you about vacuuming your carpet.

    for now....lights out.

  288. Mad Dog:

I thought I would spend a few minutes lurking before hitting my rack. With all this talk about saimin, sardines and other food, my stomach is growling. How can I go to bed in this state?

  289. Jason:

Green? I thought you hated green.

Anyways, I'm off to check those pics, then head to bed. Night, all.

  290. al:

    mad dog....i agree.

drink plenty water and you will feel full.

    lights out for sure now.

  291. gigi-hawaii ©:

haha Mad dog, just drink water and take a couple of advil. Works like a charm! nah.

    well, good night, all.

  292. gigi-hawaii ©:

Jase, what a memory! yah I hate green. So I might go with blue.

  293. Mad Dog:

Gigi: you sound like my wife. Everytime I get the urge for a midnight snack, she tells me to drink water. ugh!

  294. mctruck:

I just got out of bed....it's 8:30am here in texas.

I figured if Appalachian? St. could go into Michigan and beat the home team???? nuff said......why not UH in the swamp?? can do, can do. GO WARRIORS!!!
    YOU JUST GOTTA BELIEVE!!!

  295. wafan:

    LizK . . .

Congratulations to your nephew! Whoo-hoo!!! Go Monarchs!!!

I think he will be stationed at the same base in California where one of my boys already is training on one of those new fighters. Travis' dad is the one connected with Floral Resources/Hawai'i on the Big Island -- I asked BHF2 about the company a while back.

If your nephew meets Travis from Poulsbo, Washington, then he has found the right guy. HA!

    Hey, is that three-degrees?

  296. wafan:

    MadDog . . .

I tried that trick a bunch of times -- drinking water. All it made me do was go shi-shi all night long. Better to go eat an apple..

  297. wafan:

    Good morning everyone!

Finally able to get back to the blog. Been in contact with the HA tech people. I have some stories to tell you about the "fixes" they suggested I do.

  298. Stretch:

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Going to be on Maui today so looking forward to dinner with the Maui Tsaikos at Tiffany's.

  299. Loa:

morning Stretch, wafan, mctruck and the rest of Tsaiko Nation!

Leila - great article on Tasha Kai, we miss your videos, hope everything is going well

have a safe and happy day!

  300. Rich2176:

Good Morning Tsaikos & Tsaikettes -

Finally got the blog from May 12th to load...J/K...anyway, ST called last night and mentioned a few folks are getting geared up for the June 19th CC/K-Call. It should be fun. Unfortunately, Margo is not coming back to the islands until the fall. She's doing well, and receiving her final chemo today (hopefully!).

Wanted to get Paula on the phone last night after the Idol taping, but she bailed. I wonder if ST would have been tongue tied with her on the other end. I wasn't sure if ST wanted to talk to Simon....

    More later.....

  301. Garret:

Looks like the coordinator positions in college football pay a LOT more money now than they did last year. Amazing that one of Florida State's coordinators has a $2.5 mil early termination clause...according to his contract, if he even *discusses* another job then he owes the school $2.5 mil!

Tommy Tuberville's asking price is $2.5 million.

No, not for his services. Tubs' $2.8 million salary means his family doesn't have to buy in bulk at Costco. Auburn's coach is one of the best-compensated, winningest -- and most consistent -- coaches in the SEC. Just ask Alabama.

The number above reflects what Tuberville would ask for right now to hire a staff from scratch.

"That's an average," he said. "Depending on how much you have to pay our coordinators, you might have to take them out of the equation. Have your own budget for your coordinators, have another budget for your other seven assistants."

And thus, it was written: The age of the rock star coordinator is upon us, sometime in the past year, it seems. All they lack, at times, is entourages. Two SEC schools changed coaches in the offseason, but 13 new coordinators were hired. Several of them have agents. Agents!

To no one's surprise, Texas might have the highest-paid staff in the country. It's Texas. But the two coordinators -- Muschamp on defense and Greg Davis on offense -- each will make $425,000.

At least 13 I-A coordinators made $325,000 last season, according to the Austin American-Statesman. Among those were Florida State's Jimbo Fisher, who had quite a 2007. After seven years at LSU, the career assistant came to FSU as offensive coordinator in January 2007. By December he was named coach-in-waiting to replace Bobby Bowden at a salary that is now $625,000 per season.

By comparison, Gary Crowton is way underpaid. All Crowton did was coordinate the offense for LSU's second national championship in five years. Compensation: A paltry $400,000 per season.

  302. Garret:

n terms of compensation, every coordinator should be praying to Norm Chow, the patron saint of the profession. UCLA's offensive coordinator is making at least $1 million this season, thanks in large part to the Tennessee Titans. They are picking up the difference in his UCLA contract after Chow was fired in January.

No matter who is paying his salary, Chow has earned it. In a 32-year college career that has also included stops at BYU, North Carolina State and Southern California, Chow has coached three Heisman winners and helped win three national championships. Before he left for the NFL three years ago, Chow was one of the highest-paid college assistants at USC.

And one of the highest regarded nationally.

"I don't know what it all means," said Steve Logan, the Boston College offensive coordinator entering his 29th year as a college coach. "I know that paying a guy a million a year sounds outrageous. But when you look at it from the standpoint that you're only going to be there three to five years and then most likely going to get fired. You have a short window."

It's not so much about money for Chow, it's about comfort level. He is less than 20 miles from his beachfront home, coaching against, instead of for, USC.

"The Trojan people have been courteous enough to know that, hey, come on. We're not trying to cure cancer here. It's fun," Chow said. "I lived for three years in a hotel back there (in Tennessee). It was real hard. The walls were starting to close in a little bit. Really, I was kind of looking forward to sitting out a year. Then Rick came along. He's a recruiter."

  303. Garret:

Too bad LeBron didn't tip the waiter well until *after* the news was made public.

CLEVELAND Cavalier and Vogue cover boy LeBron James makes millions a year, but he was a lousy tipper the other night. According to Web site Cleveland Scene, James frequently dines at local eatery XO Prime Steaks. He and his friends pulled up in his Mercedes and "[kept] his waiter there until 3:45 a.m.," said the blog. But when the $800 bill came, James left a measly $10 for his server.

  304. Garret:

Amazing that Arizona State is cutting 3 sports! I feel really, really badly for the athletes and coaches affected by this decision.

Arizona State University is cutting three men's sports programs, including wrestling, swimming and tennis -- a move made to save more than $1 million in expenses.

The decision, which is effective immediately, was made by Vice President Athletics Lisa Love and supported by President Michael Crow.

As many as 70 student athletes will be affected by the elimination of these sports. Six full-time coaching positions will be eliminated. Wrestling coach Thom Ortiz and men's tennis coach Lou Belken will be paid through November.

  305. MeiLing:

    Aloha kakahiaka!

Football & fuud...great blog! If you're in LV and are jonesing for some Island-style Chinese food, Wo Fat on Desert Inn & Sandhill is good. A cook from Wo Fat in HI opened this small restaurant. Lots of locals. Wonderful baby ong choy with harm ha, pork hash, cake noodles, yum! The won ton is not the same, but big balls of meat with won ton pi wrapped simply. They also make a great potsticker.

Mahalo nui loa to Kynan for giving back to the UH!

  306. LizKauai:

    ALOHA KAKAHIAKA!

Remember, winning in life is a journey, not a destination.

Re: Superferry. My friend took the ferry to HNL last Fri and said that it was great. The ride was good, but the best thing was that you could take your own cooler, load it with refreshments and fuud and have a relaxing party on board. That sounds like my kind of traveling. He said he going use it again at the end of the month to bring his new car from HNL. Much cheaper than YB and way faster and no hassles.

Another guy here on Maui is moving to HNL and what he is doing because he get time is renting a mini van, load it with his household goods, take the ferry, drop his goods at home in HNL, return the car there at the airport, and fly home. He said it is a lot of fun.

  319. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Whitey,

How long is the trip one way between Maui and HNL?

  320. whitey:

This going make LizK and bhf2 jealous. We can take the ferry Sat morning and arrive in HNL at 2 pm, join the Tsaikos' tailgate at Richadson, go to the game, go check the night life, wake up early and play one early round in HNL, then check in our car with the ferry around 2 pm. Take the 3 pm Sunday ferry home and be home at 6 pm. Load our car with golf bags, coolers, etc. Sounds like a good idea.

  321. Kekoa:

Gigi ~ "A 3 hour tour...a 3 hour tour...well you know the rest of the song..."

  322. whitey:

    "Football"

  324. whitey:

  338. Kekoa:

Koakane ~ Mahalo my brutha for pointing out dat fact. Eggs were very much a part of our culinary training at the Schools during the 7th grade.

The fact that mine somehow ended up on the ceiling of the classroom was not the source of amusement for my instructor even if my classmates thought I had brought new meaning to "Oava Easy." Bwhahaha!

    "Football"

    Go Warriors

  339. SteveM:

    Good morning everyone!

Looks like there's "fixes" and "workarounds" for the blogware coming out soon judging from wafan's post #297. Probably a manual listing all the things we need to do to our computers (PC, Mac, UNIX, LINUX) and various browsers in order to make the cra*p they are serving work for us. ooops, promised not to rant -- this fabulously unique blue blogware perform flawlessly for free.

Not saying this is the case here, but the thought that some people making you think something must be wrong with you or your computer vs. fixing or replacing the garbage they are serving -- makes me dream of baseball bats., torches, rope... :(

Other than this ... it looks like a fine day!

  340. Kekoa:

BHF2 ~ CODDLED?!...I can show you the perfect coddled egg direct from my egg coddler purchased in Heidelberg, Germany many years ago. Would you like that with cheese?

But to say that we were coddled would cause the wrath of Bulla & DPK to come "Ringing" down from Kalihi until we collectively swell the echo of our song down where you hang your banana!...Bwhahahaha

    SMASH MOUT FOOTBALL!!

    Go Warriors

  341. bighilofan2:

    Kekoa,

ever wondered why Blase, Lambert, Maureen set State cross country records? That's right. The Broom!

I take credit for creating the football too.

    howz that Oldie????? :D

  342. Addahknowjoe:

Thank goodness for off topics. For we wouldn't have heard ST was a phone call away from actually talking with Paula and Simon. (300-Rich2176)

Ohhh the virtues of this blog.

Would be awesome to somehow have Paula and Simon dawn UH logo wear on Idol. Or Randy for that matter. What a promo for UH. (my tie-in to being on topic =)

  343. koakane:

    bhf2 and kekoa

    Hi Folks,

Whew! Almost caused small-kine pandemonium in the Addahknow household. (Forgive the oxymoron)

How many fundraiser events do UH Athletics have a year? Is it up to each sport to have their own fundraisers, or is there an annual Athletics fundraiser?

Just wondering because my brother and his wife co-chaired a fundraiser for the OC symphony that netted over a million dollars...

  353. SteveM:

  356. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

Am waiting on a return phone call from the UH ticket office to confirm the information before it gets posted here; however, the deadline to turn in the paperwork for all CURRENT season ticket holders and NEW season ticket holders is close of business Friday, May 23. All Florida and Oregon ticket requests will be processed in order received and according to a previously-set hierarchy. Will post that information here as well.

The procedure for making sure that tickets from different inidividuals who meet the above deadlines & criteria AND who want to sit next to each other is what I want to make sure is correct before it's posted here. Please be patient. The last thing anyone wants is bad info being spread around.

If no return phone call comes in by early afternnon, then I'll call again.
