Back to the studios

May 19th, 2008
By Stephen Tsai

The Warriors apparently have reservations at the "UH Hilton" this summer.
In recent years, because of the high maintenance/rental costs of the dorms, the Warriors stayed in two on-campus dance studios during the two weeks of training camp.
Greg McMackin's intent was for the Warriors to use the dorms this training camp. But during meetings, the seniors said that staying in the dance studios — "UH Hilton" — improved team unity. The studies are located on the second floor of the UH athletic complex.
McMackin relented, and now the Warriors have plans to stay in the studios during training camp, which opens Aug. 2 when the newcomers report.

* * *

The tentative plans call for running back Mario Cox to rejoin the Warriors Aug. 25, the first day of the fall semester.cox_mario.jpg
Cox was dismissed from the team near the end of last season. He was reinstated this year, and participated in spring practice. The NCAA limits teams to 105 players for training camp. With UH employing a one-back offense, and the top spots occupied (Daniel Libre, Leon Wright-Jackson, David Farmer and Jake Heun), there wasn't enough room for Cox on the training-camp roster.

* * *

Once again, here are the key summer dates for the Warriors:
Tuesday, May 27 — Start of offseason conditioning program/first day of Summer Session I.
Thursday, July 3 — Last day of Summer Session I.
Monday, July 7 – First day of Summer Session II.
Friday, July 25 — Last day of offsesason conditioning program.
Saturday, Aug. 2 — Freshmen/new transfers report.
Sunday, Aug. 3 — Returning players report.
Monday, Aug. 4 — First practice of training camp.
Thursday, Aug. 14 — Last day of Summer Session II.
Monday, Aug. 25 — First day of fall semester.
Tuesday, Aug. 26 — Leave for Atlanta.
Friday, Aug. 29 — Leave for Florida.

* * *
Birthday shout-outs to d1shima, Peaches and Doey.
It's great when special people share a special day.

* * *

Whoops. HBA's outside hitter is Branden Kaneshiro. I misspelled his first name in Sunday's story.

* * *

Robert Kekaula has a pretty good suggestion: AC to the Cavaliers. They need a point guard who doesn't shoot. AC fits the role.

* * *

Princess Leila is en route to Disneyland. Brother Mike is in L.A. And I'll be undergoing a minor medical procedure today. So, LizKauai, Esme and Garret are in charge of the blog.

Matt Spanos, who played his entire senior season in 2007 with a torn triceps, was invited to Miami Dolphins minicamp this week for a tryout at either guard or center."

gigi - You still didn't explain what the flags are for. Is it to gauge distance (how far are they), accuracy, warning for golfers not to enter area, sprinkler head locations, groundskeepers having fun, road course demarcation for golf cart rally racing, or mongoose dwellings?

Looks like hubby can revolutionize the golf game with his hack and whack approach. Hmmmm, you should see if Tiger will endorse it. You'll be millionaires!

  19. bonar:

    17th!

Doc, I believe it's the blue "border" around all edges of the page. You should also see it when you refresh the page. The screen goes blue until the server can push put the actual page content that overlays the blue background to your computer.

    ST:

minor medical procedure? hope your recovery is quick & as pain free as possible!

  30. jojo ®:

homey - I usually don't tap the ball enough for it to go anywhere, so I over-corrected it, and I knew someone had their hand in their pocket and I purposely did that.

  31. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Get well soon, ST!

  32. al:

my 87 year old mother has no back swing either and she can hack em 30 yards past the blue flag too.

lets see that'll mean she'll get to the pin in what a dozen strokes?

  33. homey ®:

jojo - You are talking about golf aren't you?

  34. al:

i hope mario finally gets it this year.
boy, has he had a whirl wind affair since coming to hawaii. it is amazing that he is still going to school.

  35. jojo ®:

let me clarify, stretch had his hand in his pocket because he was playing with his camera and I wanted to get a good shot

  36. homey ®:

jojo - ROTFLMFAO! So you aren't talking about golf!

  37. addahknowjoe:

ST- OK, what and how minor is this medical procedure you will undertake?

  38. jojo ®:

wait, that doesn't sound right either

I wanted an interesting picture of me taken by stretch

  39. homey ®:

jojo - I was going to write something but someone might squeal. There you go again, trying to get me into trouble!!! Didn't we just discuss this!!!

  40. Kekoa:

ST ~ Serious business...please pass on to coach Nash this important link. (It's also included in my name above, or copy & paste info below).

    http://www.sportingo.com/Basketball/a7641_Basketball-should-be-greatful-Albert-Schweitzer-tournament

Recruiting will continue to be key for him. He should make plans to attend this tournament to do some serious recruiting. If he or his staff can't go, maybe me and BG can catch a hop over to Germany and bring back some inside info for coach to consider.

I was the with the Army Liason charged with handling the billeting, care and feeding of the tournament team when Magic Johnson and Jeff Lamp played there in March of 1977. Back then, the U.S. sent the winner of the Mickey Dees East/West All Star Game in Landover, Maryland to this tournament. Ho!..needless to say, that team was loaded! In 1979, Indiana sent their All State team because U.S. tourney officials didn't want another blow-out to embarrass the Europeans. They lost to Yougoslavia!

Since then, the Europeans have steadily improved. Now, the U.S. has to form a more cohesive and well-trained junior national squad just to compete on the same level as the Europeans. As evidenced by the recent Olympic and Pan Am games, the global talent level is at an all time high. We need to tap in to that European market.

  41. homey ®:

al - this is just another test for Mario. Let's see how he handles being out of this camp.

  42. homey ®:

Kekoa - Not only that but the Euro is doing pretty good vs. the Dollar.

  43. Bulla:

SteveM & Peaches: Check Cruise line schedules for Atlantic Crossing and Rhine River connections, for the Tsai-kruisers.

Liz: Crank up the Priceline reservation line for the rest of the Tsaikos who want to go. Prepare to report play-by-play from tourney.

Bulla: Need a Tsaiko Terrorist alert posted to warn the terrorist we are coming, and important they should prepare to back away.

Homey: Can you look for 'short' cuts?...or should we not sweat the small stuff?

Koakane: EIS regs for European beverage samples much more stringent, plan to deploy in advance to conduct intense study prior to movement. Team up with D1, James, Kazz, Wreck, Stretch, A-house ohana.

ST - Any info on how the incoming JC transfers are doing in their schoolwork?

  59. d1shima(tilted):

    bulla,
    What's up?
    You ready for this week?

  60. gigi-hawaii ©:

homey, you gotta go to a driving range yourself to find out what those flags are for. I won't squeal.

So in this video or photo, was jojo golfing lying down like me? That's Stretch at work, again. haha

  61. LizKauai [Believer]:

We still have vog on Kauai today but it doesn't compare to the fires still burning in FL!

Just got to the office from an audit. The name of the show is "The Moment of Truth". Now, I need to decide if the books were.

Two days in a row the blog seems to be loading better. Still HATE the new design and the font in the comments box is still too small.

Good luck ST w/ your "minor" procedure.

  64. gigi-hawaii ©:

Liz, I don't know about vog, but it's been raining off and on this morning here in the stadium area.

  65. homey ®:

XLiz - What you using to take notes? A bent paper clip?

  66. d1shima(tilted):

Are esme, Liz and Garret working in shifts?
Or are we getting the 3d lookover?

  67. homey ®:

gigi - just joking, I know what the flags are for. Nothing like hitting it past the last flag. BWAHAHAHAHA!

  68. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Wow- Rich- have "fun".

gigi- watch out for da acid rain!

xs- clickety click click click... :-)

  69. Kekoa:

Liz taking notes in Braille Homey. No bodda her. She gotta constipate.

  70. g-nalo:

    Playing with “camera”, “keys”?

Is this why his “handle” is “Stretch”?

its "Stretch" cause the "keys" are hard to find.

  71. gigi-hawaii ©:

haha Kekoa. that was funny! constipate...

  72. homey ®:

XLiz - You're taking notes with a morse code device?

  73. d1shima(tilted):

    gigi,
are there plans for more lessons from Kekoa or anyone else?

  74. gigi-hawaii ©:

    d1, not at this time.

  75. gigi-hawaii ©:

golf lessons are expensive. $25 half hour.

  76. MeiLing:

I thought the Pearl Country Club was exclusive, but hubby told me it is open to the public. Eventually, we will pay $23 pp for twilight 9 hole golf course.

    Twilight is after 3:30 pm.

  79. homey ®:

gigi - no need lessons, just watch how the pros swing on TV and emulate that.

  80. al:

    d1....yah no worry.
they get em already can hit past the blue flag.

  81. d1shima(tilted):

    g('nalo),
    too funny. :-)

(of course, not going ask how that info was obtained, nor will we ask for verification)

  82. gigi-hawaii ©:

a bucket of balls is just $2. Get it from a machine.

  83. al:

gigi...you should let the general public know when you have a tee time.

  84. LizKauai [Believer]:

Dunno if I can do this with the foot problems but I'll look for this in the store - I think the kids will enjoy it too!

  85. gigi-hawaii ©:

Al, why? so I can embarrass myself?

    haha

Anyway, I so glad Koakane told me about PCC cause it's so convenient.

  86. Barry Markowitz:

Rich & all the Tsaikos, When SC is finally ready to schedule the Warriors again...I guess you guys have the best chance on the best tickets at the LA Coliseum. Abe will have to make sure his aunties and uncles are in the know to purchase the best seats...even if its on the Trojan side? Whatever happened to that 2010 UH vs. SC date, just vapor, Rich?

BG: it was 16 points out of the 55 that Abe was fortunate to contribute to his Punahou team's effort. Gold was not in the cards for Abe Saturday...but heck, I told him not to be disappointed, because without his two Silvers...Punahou would have been celebrating Radford's State Track Championship. I told him he will have plenty more opportunities and that this was a learning experience...neat when you lose a little but win the big picture, and learn some life lessons. This is kind of like the Warriors 2007 season undefeated, and then a life lesson of humility and courage at the end.

  87. al:

    lizk....thanks for the heads up.

i was thinking of buying that wii fit, but after watching the clip i realize i am missing some of those muscles that first guy had and would then have extreme difficulty performing most of the exercise routines.

perhaps i'll go back to golfing.

  88. Peaches:

    Good morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes.

    Thank for the birthday greetings.

I received a beautiful orchid lei from my grandchildren. One of my co-workers also serenaded me with a beautiful rendition of "Happy Birthday to You". Really made my day.

D1 - "Happy Birthday". Have a great day.

    Also, happy birthday Doey.

Tsai, is there room for SteveM in Doey's doghouse.

    Have a great week everyone.

  89. d1shima(tilted):

    gigi,

    OK.
Just keep in mind that it would be good to get in b4 darkness sets in

  90. al:

no gigi......so the other golfers can make sure that their tee times are before you guys.

and some may want to take more videos if he can get his camera out of his pocket.

  91. gigi-hawaii ©:

Al, that would be so cool if you started golfing again.

  92. gigi-hawaii ©:

so many guys with bright ideas these days. my my.

hey Peaches, HB! So you wanna send your other half to Doey's dog house? haha

    get room for hubby too?

  93. LizKauai [Believer]:

Hi Peaches! Have a great Birthday!

uhoh- beau.. I think you and Doey will be having company soon!

  94. al:

    woof woof!

that was a good one there peaches!
i have a steel cage that he could fit in and some leftover adult dog low calorie food.

grandmother? i remember you telling me that once. unbelievable i'd say.

  95. homey ®:

Or maybe al can take up surfing again!

Hey, if al golfs, then I'm there.

  96. gigi-hawaii ©:

you guys should all take up golf! maybe we could have a Tsaiko Golf Tournament!

    anodda bright idea. haha

  97. Rich2176:

gigi - some people stop playing golf to preserve what little sanity remains...

  98. d1shima(tilted):

    Peaches,
I can check with beau to see if he wouldn't mind a roommate for a *little* while. haha

  99. al:

    that's a scary thought.

    homey,
these days i go watch the kids surf and i relive those moments. i look at the board in the garage and wonder. then, i look at the opu and say to myself, "you kiddin' right?"

  100. al:

    hey rich,
    ready for the hawaii visit?
what's going on with the mini cooper these days?
maybe she should test drive jojo's kompressor to compare the ride.

  101. al:

oh wow. 200 yesterday and 100 today without any effort.

  102. al:

    okay homey,
    we golf if gigi surfs.
i like see her try surf in one muumuu.

  103. Kekoa:

If there ever was a Tsaiko Golf Tourney, I'll bet the sporting goods stores would do sell-out biz in batting helmets, and catchers gear.

  104. d1shima(tilted):

Wow Rich, one might start getting the impression that you are actually enjoying the blog again ;-)
Good to see you posting comments again.
Hope Margo is having a great day!

  105. al:

gotta go get some roast pork.
that homey did it too me the other day.

that could be the start of a nice pupu spread.

    roast pork
    pipikaula (fried of course)
smoke meat from kona (again fried of course)
    hamachi sashimi
    oysters on a half
    littlenecks on a half
    opihi
    aku poke w/limu lipoa
ny steak w/kikoman shoyu & chili pepper-rare of course
    misoyaki butterfish
saba (fried of course w/mirin, salt n pepper)

    okay nuff of the pupus.
some good brews, imported of course.

and don't forget the lipitor after.

reposting - NEX at Pearl Harbor does NOT have any UA Warrior shirts - supervisor said their order has not been received yet - no idea when shipment arrives.

  109. A-House:

    "happy birthday to you"
    "happy birthday to you"
    "happy birthday d1shima and peaches"
    "happy birthday to you".

  110. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

One of DrDoc's clients - a remodeling contractor - built Saturn The Dog a beautiful new house complete with windows and flooring which is much nicer than the 49-year-old spotted vinyl flooring in the humans' house.

Plenty room to share if needed as long as you're comfortable snuggling up to an 85 lb. pitbull. He's very friendly, but he's extremely protective of his family even though the cats tease him through the sliding glass door. They like to take turns.

Am supposed to be working, but the brain cells need more caffeine which is currently dripping through the grounds as I write. Oh, oh - the "done" hime just rang.

Must return to work. Happy B'Days again.

  111. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

    Whoops!!!

    "done" hime = "done" timer

  112. chawan_cut:

    homey,
i think i'm sick because there's no more UH sports for roughly 3 months.... until... FLORIDA!

  113. Jason:

Happy birthday to d1shima and Peaches! And a very happy birthday to Doey. ;-)

WassupDoc: Take a look at what the blog looks like in different browsers. Lots of people not using IE7 are having problems.

chawan_cut: Glad to see you are feeling better. Yikes, those pics are eye-opening, yeah?

  114. SteveM:

    Arf Arf!

  115. Rich2176:

    Al, b-day boy d1 -

Margo hasn't said anything about the mini lately. I told her I was looking at the sport model, and she freaked. Doesn't want anything "fast". I told her it only goes fast as the distance between the pedal and floorboard decreases. Perhaps it can wait. I'd actually like to relax on this tip. Perhaps another trip in August or the fall, when she can endure a long plane ride.

Yes, I'll post as long as the site cooperates. Four weeks & one day....but who's counting....lol

  116. chawan_cut:

oh, want to say thanks to all the UH teams and the Tsaikos for a great UH athletic year.
from football, which seems like eons ago, to baseball and everything n between.
thanks to Stephen for all of this here on the blog. thanks to Ms Leila Wai for her videos. thanks to the Tsaikos that I have met so far. stretch, jason, lizk, james, mr & mrs a-house, kazz, kekoa, koakane, esme, etc. (sorry if i forgot some of you), and especially midori7 & uhfan808 for all those baseball tickets.

again, here's to the past year, and for a bright future up ahead with the new regime of JD & GM at the helm.

  117. Loa:

    afternoon gang!

reposting - NEX at Pearl Harbor does NOT have any UA Warrior shirts - supervisor said their order has not been received yet - no idea when shipment arrives.

    A-house,

IF you are impatient, like me :wink", then head over to the Rainbowtique on Ward, I called to see if they had any more new UA merchandise and other than the polo shirts, they said they have "t-shirts" with "Hawaii Warriors" printed on the front and something on the back.

I will head over there after work to check it out for myself. Whatever those t-shirts are they are selling them for 29.99.

  119. d1shima [sez:]:

    chawan_cut,

Gosh, with all of those "thank you's" you sound like you going shut down during the summer. Please continue posting the videos, esp. stuff about the Warrior NFL'ers

  120. Kama Krab:

    Aloha Everybody

Just stopping by to say hi.

Also happy birthday to D1, Peaches, and Doey.

  121. d1shima [sez:]:

    Loa,

    Howzit.

I think "minor" usually applies only to the one DOING the procedure; as one who RECEIVES the procedure, they never seem "minor".

  122. HiFlyer:

    Happy Birthday Peaches

    Happy Birthday d1shima

A-House, go to the Hickam Exchange they have the UA polos and t-shirt .

  123. James:

chawan...eh, where you live? That photo looks like it was taken right by my house......

  124. d1shima [sez:]:

    Rich,

the "sport" models are fun to drive. Haven't driven the base models but have heard more than once from those who have that they are "dogs". Those mini's are so solid, I think you really need the extra oomph!
Did you mention that you're considering a ragtop? Even moreso, you're gonna want the power.

  125. James:

Jason...like I said on the last post....just stick with me and I'll keep you on the straight and narrow...since I'm the good boy.....mwaahahahahahahahaahahaha

  126. BG:

    Barry

Oops! Flog me with a noodle for minimizing Abe's contribution. I've been away from it way too long! Are individual field events scored "10-8 etc"? I'm used to individual track events being scored "6-4-3 etc". 16 out of 55 point...VERY IMPRESSIVE.

  127. d1shima [sez:]:

    Howzit all you "Lunch-bunchers"

Thanks for the B-day wishes :-D

  128. J-DOG:

I hope it's not those generic looking ones that you can find on google by typing: "under armour hawaii warriors"

  129. Kazz:

    Chawan,

Yes another athletic year comes to an end and it had it's fair share of ups and downs.

However, those of us who cannot let go, can we stop by Keehi Lagoon and yell at the nationally ranked sailing team while throwing beer bottles at the opposing school's boats?

  130. Kazz:

    J-Dog,

Might be... But I will know for sure by tonight.

  131. HiFlyer:

Jason…like I said on the last post….just stick with me and I’ll keep you on the straight and narrow…since I’m the good boy…..mwaahahahahahahahaahahaha

And he can drive you to any place in under 15 minutes.

  132. d1shima [sez:]:

    Gigi,

You and hubby report to Keehi Lagoon with your golf gear for target practice as prescribed above by Kazz.

    heheheh

  133. d1shima [sez:]:

    Hope ST is doing OK.

  134. homey ®:

James - you ever listen to your phone messages?

  135. James:

  136. d1shima [sez:]:

On-scene report from ace cub reporter Kazz to follow....

  137. SteveM:

James -- why does post #125 sound like you are taking Jason out on the Minnow IV for a three hour cruise?

I've just had a great, arf arf! though unimaginative arf arf! plan to escape the arf arf! house. :|

  154. chawan_cut:

thats a secret!!! sssh!!!! don't want all the ladies to come busting down my door.... haha... yeah right.

  155. HiFlyer:

Kazz, you get the schedule for the water polo team? That is one hard sport, tread water for and sprint back and forth across the pool.

  156. homey ®:

HiFlyer - I'm sure the horses are exhausted after a match.

  157. homey ®:

I can just hear the coaches, "Okay horses, make sure you guys use the bathroom before entering the pool".

  158. Da Punchbowl Kid:

"minor medical procedure"? that leaves lotsa room for spekulatin, don't it? GWS, Tsai rah.

  159. Kazz:

BAH BOOZE ITEM OF THE DAY:

THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS ARE SELLING #5 COLT BRENNAN JERSEYS (like how WarriorMojo mentioned earlier today), BUT.....

each option/plan would be for current and future operations.

hey, I sound like I'm in the CTOC again!!

Unfortunately.... although you can sit anywhere you want. You can even play "Associate AD" for a night and sit where McNamara or Clapp usually sits.

  162. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Does anybody know where that Waracka pitching machine girl from Kamehameha is going to school next year? Talk about dominating a state tourney! Whew! Where is Tsai when we need him? Oh yah, "minor medical procedure". I hope big Daddy's ok.

  163. homey ®:

  166. Da Punchbowl Kid:

  167. James:

homey - now you got A-house started on his contingency planning....mwahahahahaha

Loa...there's the new homey-phone with simultaneous camera/video and talking capabilities that allow for multi-tasking. However, the camera automatically pixilates the faces of those under 5'1" tall....so jojo can maintain her secret identity...mwahahaha

Then again, you may be talking about the term for those people on the blog who are afraid of homey....a.k.a. Homey-phobes.....mwahahahaha

  168. homey ®:

A-House - It's military to me cause us civilians don't have privileges to purchase at military outposts...unless my parents are with me.

  169. Kazz:

You know, one would imagine that out of the four big North American sports, the one league that wouldn't ship merchandise to Hawaii would be the NHL.

YET, I am still able to get my Detroit Red Wing things all in a timely fashion.

Wait, maybe I should have checked under the "international shipping" section ...

  170. Kazz:

    *wings*

  171. homey ®:

DPK - one of the reasons is that she was under the radar as a Junior. But that's ok, She'll do well at UH-Hilo and follow the footsteps of another great Kamehameha pitcher, Sing Chow.

  172. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Homey,
I watched her pitch two games and she just DESTROYED the batters. Mililani came into the game beating the living crap outta the ball for the other states games, and Waracka mowed them down. They adjusted, but too late. Mililani was hitting so well that they won there first game 20-0 on the mercy rule, Waracka had them handcuffed for the first five innings.

  173. Long Time UH Fan:

    ST,

Good luck on your procedure and hope everything is OK.

  178. Rich2176:

Happy BIrthday D1Shima (Go Govs!) and many more to come...

  180. homey ®:

DPK - you must've feel asleep. The score was 20-1. Anyway, Waracka throws some major heat and paints the corners like an artist. Couple that with her changeup and riser you have the makings of a dominant pitcher, which she is.

I'm planning a trip to Canada - and came across this Timmy Chang update.

    Ticats sign import quarterback

    Canwest News Service

    Wednesday, May 14, 2008

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats added depth to their quarterbacking ranks on Wednesday, signing import pivot Quinton Porter.

Porter, 25, is a six-foot-five, 228-pounder from Portland, Me. He's had stops with the National Football League's Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers after a four-year career at Boston College.

"Quinton has the skill set to become a very successful quarterback in the CFL. He's a big guy who runs well and has a great arm," said Ticats general manager Bob O'Billovich. "He had an impressive workout with us earlier this year and we look forward to seeing what he can do in training camp later this month."

In 28 career games with Boston College, Porter connected on 290 of 484 pass attempts for 3,203 yards, including 23 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

His 3,203 career passing yards are the 10th all-time in Boston College history, while his 63.6 completion percentage during the 2005 season is third-highest in school history.

He'll likely battle Timmy Chang for second and third on the depth chart behind veteran starter Casey Printers.

  235. Garret:

I hope that ST is okay. Best wishes to him and I hope that his procedure is already completed and he's already recovering well.

  236. Garret:

Happy Birthday to d1shima, Peaches and Doey!

  237. Garret:

    Barry,

I hadn't posted that news about the latest OL that Miami signed, but I think that guy is mainly for depth as Miami was 1 OL short of the NFL norm for the number of OL on the roster...and that assumes that *every* OL on their roster now makes the team and none are cut.

However, I wasn't around to post the news about how Miami signed a Houston Texan OL over the weekend. This guy was actually primarily a starting C in the NFL recently, but his signing doesn't worry me because Samson has that position locked down and Miami was looking for a starting G...I'm guessing McKinney will be lining up next to Samson as part of the starting OL this season.

When veteran offensive lineman Steve McKinney visited the Dolphins two weeks ago, he didn't detect a franchise in shambles. He met with the front office, took a hard look at the roster and saw a place he wanted to be.

McKinney signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins today, two months after the Houston Texans released him. McKinney, coming off season-ending knee surgery, can play both center and guard.

"I felt good about the opportunity to come in and provide veteran leadership," McKinney said of joining the Dolphins, who went 1-15 last year. "And I thought it was a good opportunity to get back on the field.

"I'm in a position to contribute right away. The group that they've brought in is a good group. These are football guys, and I know they're going to get this thing turned around quickly."

The Dolphins signed veteran guard Justin Smiley on the opening day of free agency. The other top candidates at guard are rookies Shawn Murphy and Donald Thomas.

McKinney, listed last year at 6-foot-4 and 302 pounds, said part of the Dolphins' allure was playing for new head coach Tony Sparano, whose background is steeped in offensive line work.

"They understand the importance of the front lines and making it as good as it can be," McKinney said. "(Sparano) understands what we need to do and how to get us better and put us in situations to win."

McKinney, 32, is the older brother of former Dolphins offensive lineman Seth McKinney.

The Indianapolis Colts drafted Steve McKinney in the fourth round in 1998, the same year they selected quarterback Peyton Manning first overall. McKinney was Manning's starting left guard their first four years together. McKinney made the NFL's all-rookie team as part of a line that allowed only 22 sacks that year.

McKinney became a free agent in 2002 and signed a five-year deal with the expansion Texans worth $15.5 million. He primarily played center but occasionally made appearances at guard.

By the way, it is HORRIBLE that Washington won't ship Colt jerseys to Hawaii! That makes absolutely no sense and they are losing an opportunity to make money and promote their team.

If anyone wants to get a Colt jersey, you can have them ship to my home in San Diego and I'll get the jersey to you. I'll be seeing my parents in June in Vegas, so they can bring it back to Hawaii for free, or I can mail them to Hawaii otherwise. My e-mail address is gokamoto at gmail dot com.

  255. Ronnie:

Oh oh... I put the link in the website box this time, so I don't break the blog again ;)

I saw the article link on the Washington Redskins message boards:

    This is for LizK:

Rookie Most Likely to: Lead the league in tackles
    Jordon Dizon, Lions LB

The Lions are loaded with undersized linebackers who possess good speed and instincts, so it was a surprise to see them select former Colorado LB Jordan Dizon in the second round. Dizon is another undersized linebacker who’s a hard worker and a tackling machine.

This past season for Colorado, Dizon led the nation with 173 tackles, and for his career he registered 463. It remains to be seen where the Lions play Dizon this season, as they already have Ernie Sims playing at his natural weakside position. Dizon has experience playing inside, but at 229 pounds he doesn’t have the size to withstand the punishment he would endure. With that said, the Lions may slide Dizon over to the strong side where he can display his sure tackling prowess and his ability to drop in coverage in a short area.

  256. James:

    koakane.....you know it...mwahahahahahahahaha A number one here.....

  257. Ronnie:

Colt was picked as the Rookie most likely to: Be a steal in five years

A lot of pundits think that Brennan will be nothing more than an Arena League quarterback because he doesn’t have the ideal size, throwing motion or overall quickness that translate to the NFL. But the one thing about Brennan is that anytime someone questions his ability, he always bounces back and proves all of his doubters wrong.

In the last ten years, there have been four quarterbacks selected in the sixth round that have gone on to be Pro Bowl players: Matt Hasselbeck, Marc Bulger, Tom Brady and Derek Anderson. I’m not going to compare Brennan with any of the quarterbacks mentioned, but his resiliency is uncanny, and nothing seems to faze him.

Brennan is in the perfect situation with the Redskins to show he’s capable of being an efficient NFL quarterback. New Head Coach Jim Zorn brings his West Coast offense to Washington, and Brennan is the perfect QB to develop in this offense. Although he worked out of the shotgun at Hawaii, Brennan has experience in the West Coast system going back to his high school days. Brennan’s quick release, accuracy and ability to run the offense will be enough to push Jason Campbell for the starting job in two years.

  258. James:

  264. Esme:

LizKauai, Esme and Garret are in charge of the blog.

    What? WHAT?!?!!
    This is news to me.

Well, that's ST, always catching us off guard and keeping us on our toes, eh?

I'd whack him with da slippah right now for not giving me a heads up ... if I weren't so worried about his "minor medical procedure." Jeeminy. Did he tell anyone exactly what's going on with him? I hope he's OK.

Meanwhile ... seriously: I know everyone here knows how to place nicely, so I'm not really needed to chaperone the blog. But IF something goes seriously wrong here on the blog — people start beefing, the blue screen eats everyone alive, Kekoa or las vegas start busting out firearms, whatever — anyone can e-mail me at enii at honoluluadvertiser dot com and I'll be sure to get it fairly quickly. Certain blog denizens also have my cell number.

I'm afraid I actually can't linger here too much today because I'm working on deadline.

But I will be popping in now and then for a peek. Don't make me put anyone in time-out on the Naughty Chair, now!

    Liz,

What happens after the game? I am lining up a B&B room in Gainesville for the night of the 30th.

Well, if that B & B is on a remote hill top maybe you and all your Tsaiko friends could turn it into a Tsaiko Motel?

d1/bulla....although I don't have kids....I know the feeling. My nieces all lived with me when they went to Kamehameha....geez...three teenage girls in my house at the same time....drove me nuts...anyway, it reminded me of my high school days and when I look back, it all went too fast....although I didn't see that at the time, it never hits you until all your friends start leaving for college and you begin to see less and less of them......

Congrats to all graduates in 2008!!!

  268. James:

d1..that's what we're doing next year at the UNLV game right?? All Tsaikos are gonna take over a hotel in Vegas.....scree scree scree....LMAO

  269. Ronnie:

I'm not sure if anyone posted this yet, but even though the Colorado Crush lost this past weekend, Chad Owens had another good game.

    9 receptions for 78 yds
2 carries for 2 yds and 1 TD
4 kickoff returns for 76 yds (long of 36 yds)

Also, on June 2nd at 4:30PM HST, ESPN2 will show the New York Dragons at Colorado Crush game!

I'm back from my "minor" medical procedure.

  271. Esme:

  274. las vegas:

  275. Garret:

    Rich,

Why don't I take care of the people who order jerseys after you go to Hawaii...you can handle the jerseys before that. That would make the most sense, since you'll be going to Hawaii and meeting up with people then anyway.

  276. koakane™:

  278. las vegas:

Kinda intrigued by the Todd Collins though, something about that name.......

    dang, spurs won the series.

Although I do not care for the NBA, I am calling it for the Finals:

    Boston vs San Antonio.

  296. Garret:

Online bookies have Tebow as the favorite for the Heisman this season...but the Warriors can change that after the first game! However, I guess Tebow's team lost 4 games last season and he won the Heisman anyway, so maybe he still will have a chance even if the Hawaii D does it job on him. Percy Harvin of Florida was given better odds than Ian Johnson.

Tebow is 7/2 and Daniel is 8/1 (at the time of this post). Ohio State's Chris Wells is a sparkling 5/1, the same odds given to a pick on the field.

The following players are 10/1: Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), Michael Crabtree (Texas Tech), Knowshon Moreno (Georgia) and Pat White (West Virginia).

Others of note: Colt McCoy of Texas and Percy Harvin of Florida are 25/1. Ian Johnson of Boise State is 35/1. Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame (he of seven touchdown passes and six interceptions in 2007) is 50/1. Armanti Edwards of Appalachian State is 100/1.

  298. Garret:

I think this Miami CB is in a *little* bit of trouble...how long will it be until he's cut and out of the league? Getting into a fight because he can't afford to pay off his gambling debts? That raises all types of red flags. I guess it could only be worse if he pulled a gun on the guy he was fighting with...which a TV report said he did!

Dolphins cornerback Will Allen is part of an investigation by the Davie Police Department involving a dispute over money. No charges have been filed and no arrest made, according to Lt. William Coyne.

A report on WPLG-Channel 10 alleged that Allen borrowed money to pay gambling debts. When repayment was demanded, the person claimed Allen pulled a gun. Police would not confirm the report.

If charges are subsequently filed against Allen involving a gun and there is a plea agreement or a guilty verdict, the seven-year veteran could be subject to discipline under the NFL Conduct Policy.

  299. Jason:

Rats, I was hoping New Orleans would win. I'm a big Chris Paul fan.

I'm glad the Spurs won. C Paul is a great player, but the theatrics and flops get real tiresome to watch. In the end, age and experience overcame youth and cockiness. McClain supports Lagareta as regent

In an editorial board meeting at The Honolulu Advertiser this morning, University of Hawai'i President David McClain spoke in support of Kitty Lagareta, saying she has been an "exemplary" member of the UH Board of Regents.

The state Senate voted 16-9 on May 1 to reject the communications executive for another term as a regent. Her current term is set to expire next month.

Accompanying McClain during this morning's meeting was Richard Novak, vice president of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. Novak said Lagareta has been an effective member of the board and has gained the respect of national leaders of higher education.

In a letter dated May 9 to president McClain, Novak wrote: "We believe that her (Lagareta's) continued service on the regents would ensure continuity and the kind of leadership the system required as it continues to grow and serve the needs of Hawai'i and its citizens."

Define "effective" or "leadership" in this instance.

    Kazz,

McClain is showing his stripes. Wonder what he expect to get out of this weird support for Lagaretta. Incompetence must have magnetic qualities.

  319. bighilofan2:

    David McClain,
    what are you thinking?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Even a eternal optimist would know the score was 16 something. There is a better way to support your governor than to jump off the cliff for the lady that was backing up Hermie da loozer. We been here reviewing things long enough to know dat bugga was a loooooooozerr for UH.

  320. Stretch:

Some please confirm or correct this.

How long more does McClain have on his contract?? Didn't he say that he is not going to renew/extend his contract once it is up?? I hope he is not a lame duck yet.

  321. Da Punchbowl Kid:

It shouldn't be so surprising the things are the way they are. After all, who gave McClain his job? ;)

  322. Stretch:

homey, James, al, d1shima, g(nalo) & all you other funny Tsaikos - I am too lazy to go back and respond to each of you so you guys win today. Keep in mind, there is always tomorrow!!

  323. Stretch:

BTW - I would figure Wreck would have been part of it, don't the "three amigos" stick together??

  324. bighilofan2:

Quick peeples, we gotta help our team out here.

Who can authoritatively state the case why Kitty should not be renewed as a Regent, in addiiton to the no confidence vote by the Legislative panel?

  325. Jason:

Dr. McClain is weak, he has no backbone. That's the problem on Upper Campus, everyone looks out for everyone just to keep up the status quo. I'm hoping Dr. Hinshaw doesn't get contaminated by this same mentality; she's shown signs of independence, but also questionable decisions like her support for Gary Ostrander.

  326. LizKauai:

Ronnie- I just saw the post about Jordon. Thanks! (I swear it wasn't there a few hours ago!!!)

  329. BowsForever:

Senate doesn't want Lagareta, but McClain does? Curious.

Btw, did anyone notice Coach Mack aging before our very eyes? Just yesterday I thought he was a newly minted 59. So said ESPN and this here paper. Then comes the (Southern) Oregon Mail-Tribune with an article mentioning that he's _63_. (Link's here: http://www.mailtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080519/SPORTS/805190307). So I go the UH Athletics website, and the "new" age seems to be right, since it mentions his graduating from Southern Oregon in 1967...though I fuzzily recall the website saying he was 58 before...

I mean, Coach Mack's still just as great in my opinion, and this is nothing at all like, say, a Miguel Tejada situation. But...how can you miss something like this? =)

  330. BowsForever:

To clarify (I really really wish I could edit posts), ESPN, the Advertiser, etc. stated he was 58 back in January, and ST noted Mack's recent birthday.

  336. LizKauai:

    OK OK... everyone remain calm.

Kekoa... step away from the powder keg.

    Ted- deep breaths.

Think happy thoughts of a perfect season :-)

  337. BowsForever:

Strange, isn't it? But there is the (newly updated?) UH Athletics info, stating plain as day that he graduated from Southern Oregon in 1967, 41 years ago. Link: http://uhathletics.hawaii.edu/coach_bio.html?pid=3&coachid=191.

Having gone into graduate assistant coaching at Arizona just one year later (1968), that points to a 60+ age.

  338. BowsForever:

For all we know, Lagareta just thought WAC meant "What A Crock." Just sayin'.

    Dear Coach Mack:

    How old are you REALLY?

    --BowsFor--

Uh...this sounds like a job for ST! After he's back to work!

  350. Esme:

You mean ST still didn't check in? I thought he would after I talked to him. Hmm.

Anyhoo, all is fine, he says. I don't wanna steal his thunder, so I'll let him decide how much of the gory details he wants to share.

  351. Kekoa:

Liz ~ Breathing a bit easier now, thinking about Warriors "Romp in da Swamp!" Thinking even more about about how our defense will be feasting on "TeBow Steak and legs!" Auuwwrrrightt...defused da powder keg, life is good again!

    Tanks Liz!

  352. Jason:

Koakane: Check out my site under Miscellaneous, there's an XHTML tutorial. I gotta edit it for the new blog, but you'll see how to bold and stuff.

  353. Jason:

    Thanks for the update, Esme!

  354. Kekoa:

    Hey ST & Wena!

You know your good friend Mike Rovener from da paper wid da star on top? Did you know that he is married to a relative of mine (Bridgette)?

Maybe she could help make fixy-fixy your small kine medical problem?! She one baby doctah...jes in case...you know...medical science an all...ok, I think I hear Esme on da line...

One of these days I would really like to know what really went on behind the scenes of Fraziers reign, Some of his germs seem to still linger in the nooks and crannies of the department. I hope JD has an effective antidote.

  358. FloridaTed:

Well, 3 am here, time for moe moe. Good night, gang.

  359. LizKauai:

    Ted- you are kidding, right?
We are talking about an antiquated system - sacrifice of the many for the benefit of the few...

  360. LizKauai:

    Nitey nite, Ted!!!
    See you SOOOON!!!!

  361. FloridaTed:

    Good night, Liz.

    Looking forward to it.

Looking back, I'm amazed at how much energy was spent to cover up and protect incompetence. It would have been so much easier just to do the right thing........Gute Nacht.

  365. SteveM:

    grrrrrrrrr arf arf brew brew!
time to make my break since the 2100 check has passed...

Tried the Wii Brunswick Pro Bowling briefly yesterday. Seems realistic, complete with runaway balls and the alley slowing down as the oil diminished. Almost made me get a towel to wipe my ball before each throw. No towels in the pro shop though--but you can buy various shoes (boost stamina), balls, gloves (boost accuracy, spin), sunglasses, shirts (boost reputation). Couldn't buy a ball yet but it might have factors such as weight, side weight, drill pitch, finger span (?).

A first glance, a fair simulation of what it was like in the old days of bowling (I think it was fun, but as I see this game...not so sure now :? ). Even this simulation seems too strenuous for me now...and I found old records that remind me I was president of the Mixed Advertising league in 1983  (we took turns--main job to preside over the banquet)

I think Jason might like it. For me, too much like serious real life bowling. More fun to do bowling in Wii Sports--less stressful, more fun and a pretty good representation.

  366. bighilofan2:

    Ahem, gettin on da box:

I say to all members of the Leg. C'mtee that voted not to recommend renewal of Kitty for another term to BOR: you did a merit review of Kitty's performance. I see the review process and result was a conscious effort to provide direction. Changing Kitty will likely create the opportunity for the general public to feel better about you doing your job to keep the university administration accountable to us, GQPublic.

Her non-retention is not a reflection of her competence. The Committee's decision addresses the larger image issue - the State Legislature is willing to take visible steps to project leadership that likely will support a UH that has arrived at the next level nationally. - in a myriad of categories including athletics. The Legislature not leading last year, mostly because HF was the convenient fall guy as he made statements that can easily, in hindsight, be taken as incompetence. Now, this year, the Kitty decision is being made to be a bellweather thigamajig.

I'm for the Legislature, and a more hopeful future for all things UH, including Athletics - especially football! :D
    The Warriors represent Us.

So back off, Linda! Cronyism to the max!

    he jumps off box...

oh, one more, are you still in the doghouse?

  368. Jason:

SteveM: When I get a Wii (which will hopefully be soon), I think I'll stick to Wii Sports bowling. :-)

  369. bighilofan2:

I'm for the BOR member feeling he/she is accountable to the Legislature, and not only the Governor/staff - who are
usually perceived as being *tight* with the UH Prexy/staff.
That kinna system is a $hit$hina system. You polish em up so much day kinna look like regular dirt after awhile, an you end up convincing yourself and think things are alright.

  378. L10pc:

    Hey SteveM,

thanks for the Brunswick review. I saw it at Sam's and was tempted to get it since it was under $20. Sounds like a lot of work, but maybe I'll try it since I've max'ed out on Wii Sports Bowling...I got my 300 :!:

Dobelle was appointed by Uncle Ben ( Dem). He endorsed a Dem for Gov over LIngle ( 1st time ever public endorsment by a UH Pres.) and got fired. Auntie Linda (R) appointed McClain. He now express his support for Kitty(R). McClain is a smart guy, he knows the hand that feeds him. Do Auntie Linda a favor and your job is secure. With Kitty back on board, expect favorable job perfomance reviews. Hawaiian politics, scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.

  383. al:

cocobean....in all fairness, polititics is no different here than it is in north dakota, new york texas, or where ever.

  385. LizKauai:

shhhh... ST is tryin to sleep... inside voices...

  386. Kekoa:

Al ~ Did you check my link to the BB tourney in Germany? I'm still trying to get Coach Nash's attention on this opportunity to spend a little over one week drooling over all this raw talent!

16 Teams that only got there by special invitation from the biggest newspaper in Germany as the "host" country, and the U.S. Army promoting Good Will by providing all the logistics. This year was the 50th year of such a tourney. The name of the NBS players who came from out of that competition reads like a who's who of basketball.

What if the 'Tizer stepped up and put something like this in place? A showcase for HS aged BB players from all over the Globe. Lots of positives out of a venue like this.

Main thing is...they come here. They like it here...They are convinced to stay and play here. Game over.

  387. Jason:

Maybe Peaches is monitoring e-mail too? I think SteveM is looking for a pay phone to call you, al. But he's gotta check that for bugs, too.

jason....he broke his chair(again). but he did finally write.
i am in a mellow mood listening to phoebe snow.

  390. Kekoa:

It was over 30 years ago, but I still remember how a very young but already polsihed ball player with the unlikely name of *Magic* won the hearts and minds of fans of the game from both sides of the Atlantic.

I was in awe of this entire team as they proceeded to put on a street ball clinic for the Europeans for the whole week. Their scores were consistently over 140 for nearly the whole week. Their opponents never reached 50. Truly men among boys, yet in chronilogical age, most of the European kids were 19 already!

  391. SteveM:

Sorry -- the delay was a 1" threaded screw falling out of my comfy chair and hitting the floor. Not wanting to end up on the floor again, I climbed out. Turns out it was only from an upper arm rest, but I retightened all the bolts anyway. Al knows what chair I mean...that's the one I fall asleep in.

L10pc -- you looked familiar. I bowled in the BANKOH leagues from 1973 for a few years. Yes, the Brunswick game is challenging. I don't think anyone is going to bowl over 220 without a lot of theory. :)

  392. Kekoa:

Yeah Al, I guess I should just stop in and see him. I spend time there anyway with this other project, so I may as well. Got something for Dave Shoji, but I think my Nephew Pono may have already clued him already...btw he's married to Lisa Strand. I should invite her to a CC with us. She's really dynamic. I think the Tsaikettes would love to mix it up with sports talk with her.

  393. Kekoa:

Time to go Zzzz...I'm slurring my words on paper if that's possible... G'nite all!

  394. al:

kekoa....i think they would ogle pono.

  395. cocobean:

The point I was trying to make was UH is so heavily politicized from top to bottom. More so than other places. We're an Island State with limited land mass. Everything here is bunched together so closely. The distance from the State Capitol(legislature) , Washington Pl (Gov), and the Downtown business establishment to UH is just a stones throw away. All these entities have some affect on how things are done at UH. The major players in those entities all know each other whether they are friends or not. Each has their own agenda they try to push. Remember when we were looking for JJ's replacement. One of the most important points was "we're a special place, different from how things are done on the Mainland. The new coach must understand this and conduct himself in a local manner to get things done." Whether he likes or not, Coach Mack gets that as "The UH FB Coach" he's become a political animal. He's made more public appearances, visited the Legislature more often and lunched with more downtown bigwigs in his short tenure than JJ ever did.

  398. LizKauai:

  399. LizKauai:

    Nitey Nite!

  400. cocobean:

Liz, I just giving my observation. Not saying it's good or bad, just saying that's the way it is in Hawaii, in my opinion.

  401. Barry Markowitz:

So am I the only vampire awake at 2:30 am?

  402. HiFlyer:

Koakane, did a recon of Champions late last night the place is very open and roomy with tables in the middle area versus boothes, there is one fairly large karaoke room that would hold 12 -14 Tsaiko sized persons. Here's what I got from the manager, Friday evenings 6:30 pretty crowded with alot of the younger crowd, even late at night the place was a younger crowd, so get there early. I also have a list of their Bar food menu and will post it later, the Yakiniku side has their own menu and prices but I think some of the items might be the same.

  403. HiFlyer:

koakane, re: #328 valet parking there are about twenty to twenty five parking stalls in front of the place, if anyone parks in the parking lot around the corner on Young St. make sure that you pay for your parking, I have seen them Tow alot of vehicles for not paying.

  404. bighilofan2:

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

  421. myki1:

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

I'm still on HST. It was up as usual at 4 but could not get to computor 'cuz sj was already fiddling around with his approximately 3500 digital pix taken on the trip. We're pretty much back to normal. All the laundry done and suitcases in storage (waiting for the next trip).

Congratulations to all the graduates of our Tsai-ko family. Hope ST is doing well post "minor procedure." Too often people forget that procedures are only minor when you are not the patient.

Hope you all have a wonderful warm/hot day today. Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

  422. Loa:

    new post up

  423. koakane™:
