JC quarterbacks check in

May 27th, 2008
By Stephen Tsai

JC quarterback transfers Brent Rausch and Greg Alexander are taking their physical examinations today in the UH training room.
They are enrolled in Summer Session I, and are set to participate in unsupervised drills beginning tomorrow.
"I'm excited to be here," Rausch said.
Receivers Mike Tinoco and Craig Bell also are here.

The Warriors officially began the summer conditioning program today.

Here's running back Leon Wright-Jackson emerging from a weight-lifting session:

And here's Spencer Smith. (By the way, a big hello to Smith's family in Georgia):

And here's Rich Sheriff's Hummer. Notice the license plate:

Oh, what the heck. Here's a picture of my son (middle, olive shirt), daughter (third from right, hand on her head) and their friends at Sunday's paintball bash. The guy on the far left and the guy in the red shirt (my daughter's boyfriend) are really tall, which is why everyone else looks so short. I know, I know. If we wanted to see home pictures we'd visit the other 652 blogs on our site. But, hey, humor me today.

Here's a picture of my Journalism class. Each one is talented, and you'll be reading or watching their stories in the coming years. The guy in white in the front row bills himself as the Korean Elvis. He sang Elvis songs a few times to open our class. Long live the King!

  9. al:

gee. leon should be in the movies.
spencer must have gained 20 lbs since he first got here.

  10. gigi-hawaii ©:

so ST took the photos which explains why he isn't in the family pic.

Very clear photos, btw, especially for an antique camera.

    Way to go, ST.

yeah gigi, I think you better wear and old muumuu

  14. bonar:

Nice shots. Spencer picked up some weight. LWJ looks good as always.

  15. Stretch:

    oops, "wear AN old muumuu"

  16. I Believe:

ST- we love the pics- wish you would share more often (like the one of you in NY with a suit- at the Heisman Awards- ooopppsss- forgot, wasn't gonna bring that up anymore...but here's an idea...you COULD do a bidding 'auction' with proceeds going to UH Wahine Soccer team (in honor of Princess Leila!)...now THAT is a win-win, don't cha think?! I'll open with $10!...any takers? C'mon Pomai....)

  17. al:

    gee bonar...that's plagiarism.

  18. bonar:

    haha: just caught that, Al.

  19. I Believe:

ST- if it's a 'family album' as you said on yesterday's blog, to announce today's posting....then absolutely gotta have WENA...and how come nobody stay covered in paint? Pic taken before the games began or get some really good shooters?!

no worry, it sounded more educated coming from you.

  21. Garret:

Great photos! I'm sure that the Warriors are working hard to meet their conditioning goals this summer. Both LWJ and Spencer Smith look in great shape, and they will be even stronger and faster after their summer work.

  22. bonar:

I wonder if the team still has the formula to determine who, pound for pound, is the strongest athlete on the team. I remember years ago, Larry Khan-Smith far outdistanced everyone else in consecutive years. That guy was truly a stud.

Utah State just lost a QB to BYU. This must *really* hurt Utah State, as they probably never had a Parade All-American QB on their roster before! This is the QB that led Utah State to a win over Fresno State. I'm sure that their coaches were counting the days until he was back from his mission and he could have probably started right away after he returned...

This QB's father played for Utah State. His grandfather coached basketball for Utah State and was their AD! Even with all that, he left for BYU...

Brigham Young University's quarterback era after Max Hall got a little more dramatic on Memorial Day when one of the most prolific quarterbacks in Utah high school history announced he would attend BYU.

Riley Nelson, a Parade All-America QB from Logan who attended Utah State University as a freshman before going on an LDS mission, will play at BYU upon his return from Barcelona, Spain, in March 2009, according to his father, Keith Nelson.

With permission from his mission president, Nelson and BYU coaches have communicated through e-mail and came to an understanding about Nelson transferring to BYU. Nelson informed his parents of the decision on Monday morning, a national holiday.

At 6 foot-1, Nelson was one of the few bright spots for the Aggies when he took over the team's starting signal-calling duties during a dismal season two years ago.

In 2006, Nelson set the USU record for single-game completion percentage by completing 21-of-24 passes (84 percent) against San Jose State.

The 2006 season began with Nelson sitting behind Leon Jackson III for the first five games and watching Jackson eventually implode. Finally in Game 6, Nelson made his first start and led the Aggies to a 13-12 victory over Fresno State for their only win of the 2006 campaign.

He was named a Parade All-American. ... Named Mr. Football in the state of Utah by the Deseret Morning News. ... Was the Gatorade Utah Football Player of the Year as well. ... Was an all-state selection and the class 3A MVP. ... Set a national record by accounting for 84 touchdowns (53 passing and 31 rushing) as a senior. ... Also set a national record by averaging six touchdowns per game. ... Finished his high school career with nine Utah state records, including career total touchdowns (130), career passing touchdowns (79), season completions (277), season passing yards (4,041), season passing touchdowns (53), season total touchdowns (84), season total yards (5,815), single-game completions (38) and single-game touchdown passes (seven).

  26. Garret:

The SEC is talking about making their own network like the Big 10 has now.

It has been on the back burner for the last year, but discussion of a proposed Southeastern Conference television network will be the focal point at the league's annual spring business meetings that open here today at the Sandestin Beach Hilton.

The league's TV contracts with CBS, ESPN, ESPN2, Lincoln Financial and Fox Sports South expire at the end of the 2008-09 athletic season. If the conference wants a network to expand coverage in mostly its Olympic sports, as well as show more football and men's and women's basketball games not covered by the league's primary broadcast partners, it must figure out a way to make all parties happy.

The league's 12 schools will also divide revenue that should top last year's record total of $122 million, despite having to issue refunds for the SEC men's basketball tournament. After a tornado struck the Georgia Dome on the second night of the tourney, the last two days of the event were played at Georgia Tech before families and media.

  30. Garret:

One thing overlooked when counting up the stars next to certain recruits is that many top recruits have their careers ended early due to off-the-field problems. Character must be judged by the coaches doing the recruiting, but scout and rivals may not get to know the athletes as well...so, recruiting rankings get skewed a little.

Plus, these are 17- and 18-year-old young men. Many non-athletes as well as athletes will mess up at that age...trouble is that some athletes can ruin shot at the NFL by making a mistake or two. But 11 of the top 20 recruits from 2005 have been arrested--that is a really high percentage!

Versatility is a term often used in college football recruiting, but many of the nation’s top prospects of 2005 have been a bit too versatile in their free time.

Quarterback Ryan Perrilloux was suspended three times at LSU before being dismissed earlier this month and is now at Jacksonville State. Receiver Fred Rouse has been booted from Florida State and UTEP, and former Florida State signee Callahan Bright, all 6-foot-3 and 320 pounds of him, is now at a Division II school after a stint on the back of a Philadelphia garbage truck.

NFL dreams are fading quickly for these players, but at least they can cling.

Defensive end Melvin Alaeze can’t. He was sentenced last November to eight years in prison for his involvement in a robbery and shooting in his Maryland hometown.

Staff File Photo by Dan Henry -- Former LSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux was the MVP of the Tigers’ SEC championship game win over Tennessee. Perrilloux, who has been dismissed from the LSU program after being suspended three times, is now at Jacksonville State.

“The thing that makes me want to pull my hair out every year are kids like Fred Rouse and Ryan Perrilloux that waste away what they have in front of them,” longtime analyst Jamie Newberg said. “They’re all first-round talents, but for whatever reason, they don’t get it and they’re out. If Ryan had just been a clean egg, he would have the chance to defend a national championship as the starting quarterback.”

11 of the 20 have been arrested.

Speaking to Florida boosters recently in Miami, Meyer said the NCAA is pulling coaches away from the recruiting process and making it more difficult to judge character.

“I’m not allowed to go out anymore,” Meyer said. “I’m not allowed to text-message. I’m trying to find out as best I can. You just keep re-evaluating.

Here is a rundown of the top 20 recruits from 2005 and how they have done.

  33. Garret:

NCAA hit with a class action lawsuit.

In order to obtain tickets to the Final Four at face value from the NCAA, you have to enter a lottery that begins on the day after the previous year's Final Four ends. The NCAA and its ticketing partner Ticketmaster have just been hit with a class action lawsuit in a California federal court alleging that the ticketing scheme constitutes an illegal lottery.

The NCAA may be unique in handling tickets in this way - that is keeping the service way for all requests that don't receive tickets. That payment for a chance at tickets may well be the key to a fairly high judgement against the NCAA and Ticketmaster if they allow this case to proceed to trial. Plus, the NCAA's track record in court hasn't been too good lately. Most states define a lottery as payment of value for a chance at winning something of value. By retaining the service fee, the NCAA has converted its ticket lottery into an illegal gambling enterprise.

  34. las vegas:

I've played in a few paintball matches and tourneys back in the old days.

This is the first time I've ever seen someone in a red t-shirt.

  36. gigi-hawaii ©:

so it is true? the paint doesn't come off? Wow, expensive game!

  37. bonar:

The interesting thing is that i heard (read?) that part of the reason the UH players dropped in the draft was because of questions about their "character." The fact that CB and DB's off-field issues (formal at least) occurred even prior to their arrival at UH might reflect increased efforts by NFL upper brass to improve its image, assuming those post-draft whispers have even a glint of truth.

  38. bonar:

from what I saw on Jacka##, paintballs can hurt, too!

they should rename it to the “Tsaiko” plate. Next CC at L&L!!

    Nice pics, Stephen.

    gigi,
paintball guns were originally made to tag trees in the timber industry. So no make sense if the paint can wash off.

btw, was there talk of a CC in honor of new poster Pauoa Boy's homecoming? (Welcome Pauoa Boy)

  44. J:

The paint comes off, well it used to at least a few years ago. Short sleeves? Ouch. That's just asking for a welt. Expensive? Nah, we got our play stuff at Ross where you can dress for less.

Used to play a little near ST's oldest kid's campus. Hmm...we probably played with as much coverage as possible. Had to avoid reactions to poison oak along with the welts that come from getting lit up by someone within close range..

  45. Garret:

One more article...Bess and Samson mentioned here. It looks like the way things are being reported they assume that Bess will make the roster and that he'll be pushing players that got playing time last season.

Derek Hagan again gets first crack at being the No. 3 receiver, but Tab Perry, David Kircus and Davone Bess should provide a depth upgrade, pushing Greg Camarillo, the 2007 hero, to either improve or find another line of work.

    Center

    2007: Samson Satele

    2008: Samson Satele

Analysis: The biggest jump that's usually made in the NFL is the one made when a player is entering his second season as a starter. Satele could be on the verge of a breakout season, but he won't have Hadnot there to hold his hand on the line calls, which should make 2008 a challenge. Overall, this is another upgrade because its impossible not to envision Satele getting better.

  62. Da Punchbowl Kid:

I wonder if ennyone knows what LWJ weighs nowadays.

As for the insect people at the bottom of the pics, yah, I see the tall one, but I assume that the one with the yellow face must be the leader.

Graduation ceremony was outstanding. Of course I'm biased (and not to diss any other school) but SLS graduations are THE BEST.
Ho'okena provided the music along with Maila Gibson (a beautiful and gifted singer, btw); when they backed up the boys in singing The Prayer....CHICKEN SKIN! I no tink had one dry eye in da arena.
Project Grad chaperone was well worth giving up the rest of the weekend trying to recover. The boys had a great time.

    Stephen,
You sure one of those vertically-challenged peeps is not homey?

  73. al:

fla ted.....libre is the better and most instinctive runner. he's got that juke n jive, great vision, burst of speed, and is tuff as nails. a bit smaller than the others but certainly will flourish in the running dept.

lwj is as fast as they come, north to south. he has yet to prove his ability to be a "runner". i don't know if that can be taught. if he can learn to hit the hole quick and adjust right away he will be a factor.

heun....i've yet to see. but, by all accounts he will be the second coming of west keliikipi. size, brutal blocker, and speed. still need to learn to be a runner.

farmer....you forgot farmer. he is the blue collar fullback. he knows the scheme and will go all out. has shown signs and glimpses of his potential when give an opportunity.

needless to say.....this is a position that we are loaded with guys that can make an impact.

perhaps this is why pilares is at slotback. where i predict he will shine.

    ah.....we talking football again!!!

  74. d1shima [sez:]:

    Kazz,

With no football in sight for three months and no UH athletics to follow, I have gone back to my NHL/Detroit Red Wing roots….

But aren't they already in play-offs, too?

  75. d1shima [sez:]:

    al,
    re: Running Back position.
I wonder if the leading criteria is still pass pro or has "tote the rock"-ability moved up to the #1 spot?

  79. FloridaTed:

    Thanks, Al,

From what I gather from your statement, it looks like whoever will start, will be outstanding. If we can rush for a thousand yards, we'll be dangerous, even without Colt. I can't wait to see the incoming QB's, I hope we got a gem among them.

  80. d1shima [sez:]:

    Nau PAU Lun Chau Wah!

  81. Jason:

al: I think Heun has the physical skills to be something special. There was one play during the Warrior Bowl when he chased down a defender from behind. Everyone was marveling about that — he showed some serious speed for a guy his size.

  82. A-House:

Jason: I saw that too and mentioned to Mrs A-House "look at that guy run" - vey impressive for a "blocking back!!!!!!

  83. al:

i think the ideal rb would be of the nate ilaoa mold. can do it all back there.

d1....i am thinking like the old rb's of the ron lee era at st. louis. big back who will relish blocking a blitzing linebacker, you know, wanting to knock em on their butts. be able to take the rock on a nice run, juking guys and running em over to finish the jaunt. then picking up a shovel or bubble pass just to wreck havoc on some poor cornerback.

i think the return of the punisher is in order at rb. kind of the opposite to the finesse pass game. you know the yin and yang.

    gotta run now.

  84. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Do they use a tight end in Cal's run and shoot? It's a shame Hawaii never has tight end traditionally, we have lots o' athletes who would prolly make excellent TEs.

  85. Pauoa Boy:

LWJ looking shmall kine diesel nowadays, hope him and Libre get at least 10-15 touches a game, think they can be productive off dat alone.

Thinking about just one of our patented West Side Breakfast of Champions for the Pauoa Boy on a Sat. or Sun. morning.

I still need to contact him for an open date on his schedule and maybe he has a preferred location.

How cool to have the Smith Family respond. Way to go ST, that's a great way to show the Ohana some Aloha!

  94. Myki (i touch):

Good afternoon Tsai-kos! Trying to post
with a new toy. It's not easy. I guess
practice makes perfect. Please be patient.
    Mahalo

  95. myki1:

Soo sorry for the double posting. I'm not very good with 2 hands let alone with 1 finger typing. It doesn't help having fat fingers!!

  96. LizKauai [Believer]:

Myki! woo hoo! new toys! I just installed a new keyboard and mouse at work...
    Gotta WIllie Grace.

Our Project Grad is coming up Friday... gonna work the early shift- registration ;-)

  97. Pauoa Boy:

Kekoa - I should be free either day. Just get graduation for go to at Roosevelt dis Saturday evening. Any place good to me, haven't been back home in awhile. Couldn't access my email at work so I couldn't email. Anyway, I stay home now. Planned on having breakfast someplace on the weekend anyway so anywhere is good I not picky.

  98. Stephen Tsai:

    Requests are answered:
Rausch and Alexander are in the hale.

  99. Pauoa Boy:

ST - Good to know the QB's are here early and the WR's. Hopefully they can get in some workouts with the boys and start learning the playbook. Have high hopes for all these JC guys, too excited to see um in action.

  100. d1shima(tilted):

    Hmmm...
Could be a special early morning visit to the grass practice fields in da wurks?

  101. Pauoa Boy:

Hope Funaki and Graunke take these guys and school em up quick, the QB's and WR's need time to gel hope they can all get it together before we hit da Swamp and drown them in there own place!

  102. Kazz:

    ST,

Are the two bigger in person than their stats previously indicated?

  103. Pauoa Boy:

Alexander is a pretty big size QB right like 6-5 240 around there? Rausch kine of a tweener at 6-4 190?

  104. al:

    yup, jase i can't
wait to see him out t here.

dpk.....it's ron lee's run n shoot. cal was always on the d side of the ball.

  105. al:

    thinking out loud......

the last time graunke helped an incoming jc quarterback during unofficial summer workouts......well, you know the rest is history.

i wonder what his role will be now?

  106. LK:

    D1,

The original paintballs used for marking trees and livestock were oil based products. After the game of paintball was "invented" and started to grow, manufacturers began making water/latex based paintballs.

    Bonar,
Although "hits" do hurt if on a sensitive part of the body, it gives the game a realism that laser tag or other such games don't have. I call it "safe danger" (consequences for sticking your head out, but no injury.)

Fields take their safety briefings seriously, and if they don't, I wouldn't play there. So goggles are mandatory while on the field, if a player were to fall and loose his goggles, all play is supposed to stop.

The best time I ever had playing was the first time, when everyone was outfitted with pump 'guns (limited rate of fire, and you actually had to aim.) With the arms race and new technology, it's become spray and pray or accuracy through volume. Haven't played in a couple of years so if there's a Tsaiko game count me in.

    Cheers

  107. Pauoa Boy:

True feel bad for Graunke, but to me after spring workouts seems like Funaki had the upperhand. I think Funaki has a knack for making plays he just need a chance. Graunke still solid but those JC guys look promising after watching the highlight videos. Just hope they figure it out quick cause Florida is not the game to be rotating guys in and out at QB.

  108. Pauoa Boy:

Paintball is nawts, but I hate when pau play and you take off the shirt and look like you get one skin disease with all the welts from da paintballs so owwweeee!

  109. Kekoa (iPhone):

    Pauoa Boy ~
Good to know you are ready to meet some of the Tsaiko Ohana. Send email to kekoa22 at aol dot com. Let me know the general area you will be staying, and some contact #'s. I'll get the Warrior Express crew to decide on a place close.

Myki! ~ I stay typing with 1 fingah on my iPhone. Hard yeah? I got Pops at the PT place until 4pm. So wat? We going watch da new QB's play catch wit da receivers?

  110. FloridaTed:

    Tsai-Meister,

Alexander and Rausch would make great blog guests for a nice welcome. I'm excited they're here, now let's see what shakes out, ditto the WR's.

  111. FloridaTed:

Off course, those guys being here obviously means that all their school work is up to snuff?

  112. FloridaTed:

Actually, some of the unknowns about our team is what makes it extra exciting, kinda like a new love, lol.

  113. Pauoa Boy:

    Kekoa, email sent thanks.

  114. Pauoa Boy:

Talking about incoming guys, whatever happen with Gabe Tuata or John Manu-Olevao?

  115. wafan:

    LizK . . .

The OSU game really depends on my school schedule. I am trying to arrange my calendar to have it open. The rest depends on other state organizations -- I only have so much pull in their scheduling.

But, definitely! If can, can! If no can, waaaaaaaaaahhhhhh, sniff, sniff.

Boise is a different problem. It is around a 9 - 10 hour drive (includes shi-shi and fuud breaks). I will really have to think about that one because I will probably lose one school day (Friday).

  116. al:

tuata is at pasadena cc i believe.
manu-olevao was supposed to enroll this fall???

  117. d1shima [sez:]:

    LK,
Thanks for the info. The one and only time I played was also at a time when most everyone had the single shot guns and you're right, that made for some actual strategy and thinking.
At the waterpark the other night, there was the equivalent type of guns at one of the activities except those shot the foam balls. At first, I thought that someone was popping firecrackers outside the park because of the "spray and pray" technique you mentioned.
Definitely not in shape now for a Tsaiko paintball event though.

  118. Pauoa Boy:

Tanks for the info, you tink Coach Mack going try get Tuata back? he was pretty nawts in high school, taught he was a second coming of Chad Owens with his juke ability and quickness.

  119. Rob25:

    Hey Ronnie,

Just wanted to let you know that I booked my seat for the Fresno game. I arrive on Friday morning and leave Tuesday evening. $312 roundtrip on Delta. Best rate I found since I started looking!

Watch out Bulldogs...we are coming to town!

We can talk about it at the Karaoke call next month.

  120. Stephen Tsai:

If John Manu-Olevao does what he's supposed to do, he joins in the fall.
I think that ship has sailed with Gabe Tuata.

  121. Stephen Tsai:

The guy who whistled the theme song to the Andy Griffiths Show died.

  122. koakane™:

  125. marlis:

Reading today, we see that Michelle Wie tees it up this Thursday in Germany. On a sponsor's exemption the 172nd-ranked player has another chance to bred success. And point her career in the right direction. Analysts and some others point that her problems are not with her swing. But with the absence of confidence that's eluding her. And I agree. Plus add in a bad wrist, the weight on her shoulders and not having the great mentor in her life. And it is easy to see why she has confidence issues.

Given what Earl (Tiger's Dad) did to Tiger's career growing up is the complete antithesis of what Michelle dad, BJ, does to Michelle's career. Where as some say BJ is counter productive to Michelle future success. Tiger's Dad was the architect, building a foundation. And fostering a bond, where the son tried so hard to make his Dad happy.

So far her career has been accented by a lot of negativity. Message board are ripping her apart. Sport columnists, radio talk hosts and bloggers say shes a freak show, three ring circus, and the Anna Karnokova of the ladies tour and some of the deployed assaults and parody mocked towards Michelle are hard to filter out how we think of Michelle because she hasn't lived up to the hype. Add in the jealousy factor of how both the ladies and men's tour watching her getting all this attention, accomplishing presently very little. But hulaing all the way to the bank. And it doesn't embrace her favorably in the company of her peers let alone in receiving the slights and sneers of the fans. And who can argue with them? Is Michelle the poster child for arrogance? Biting off too much she can chew, and now is she's choking ? Parental bliss? Maybe so. Maybe so. Maybe so.

A lot of people, though, forget that as 16 year old, playing in a limited schedule she would have placed 7th on the money lists. So what happened? Where's the spark, now? We acknowledge the bad wrist and hope it gets better. On that note we want everything to get better.

No question that today, however, Michelle is in a slump. And what probably contributes to her down spin is arriving on the scene with too much celebratedness and the lack of preparedness of instilling the mental part of the game. Now looming unfavorable for her are the pressures of having to prove her self. When we see Michelle on the course we empathize with the bad shots, rounds and tournaments. And watching Michelle skipping going through the protocols of the tour, the growing pains and enduring the maturation process of growing up naturally we notice the mounting pressure etched on her face when she does have to answer her critics after a bad showing. She feels the wrath and she better realize it amasses quickly with each bad round. And year.

Come Thursday, here's hoping she does well in her tournament in Germany. And the only advice I like to give her, both career and tournament wise, is please do not get ahead of yourself. And take one shot at a time.

  126. Jason:

koakane: What's wrong with you, go read my tutorial, dang it. :-P

  139. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

    Aloha:

Here is the current situation with respect to the Board of Regents. All the information has been confirmed. If this is not of any interest to you, then please skip down to the next post.

Under the re-organized BOR, there are now 15 seats. Currently through June 30, 2008, ten of the positions are filled. Of that number, five holdovers - Byron Bender, Michael Dahilig, Marlene Hapai, Kitty Lagareta & Jane Tatibouet - had their terms extended by Executive Order to June 30, 2008.

The terms of two individuals - Andres Albano, Jr., and Ramon de la Pena - will expire on June 30, 2008.

The terms of three individuals - Allan Landon, James Haynes & Ronald Migita - will expire in 2009, 2010, and 2009, respectively.

In mid-February, a list of 22 names to fill 12 vanacies was sent to the Governor broken down into six categories with the number of seats in parantheses after each category: At-Large Student (1); At-Large (2); Hawai`i County (2), City & County of Honolulu (5), Kaua`i County (1), Maui County (1).

NOTE: Jim Donovan withdrew his name after accepting the Athletic Director's position and Doris Ching was named to fill his slot on the List of 22.

Included in the List of 22 were current Regents Albano (At-Large), Dahilig (At-Large), Lagareta (At-Large) & de la Pena (Kaua`i).

Bender, Hapai and Tatibouet either did not re-apply or, if they did, they did not survive the screening process to make the List of 22.

The Governor selected only Lagareta to be considered by the State Senate, but she was not confirmed.

She also withdrew her At-Large Student nominee, Josh Wingstrom, after the Senate Education Committee on April 28 deferred further action on his nomination. NOTE: I do not know why as his paper credentials are outstanding.

The following individuals have been confirmed and will take office officially on July 1, 2008: Artemio Baxa, Maui; Carl Carlson, West Hawai`i; Harvey Tajiri, East Hawai`i; Howard Karr & Dennis Hirota, C&C of Honolulu; Teena Rasmusssen, At-Large.

Therefore, on July 1, 2008, these six new Regents will join the three who are in mid-term..

    This leaves the following seats "vacant" - At-Large Student (1); At-Large (1); C&C of Honolulu (3); Kaua`i (1).

The Governor is expected to extend the terms of many of the current Regents for another year and hopes for a more friendly Senate next time around. However, Dahilig, the current At-Large Student Regent, cannot continue to serve in that capacity which is why he applied for one of the At-Large seats

There are other procedural questions being worked out now including whether a new list will be created or the current names kept on it with others added.

    ***

Hope everyone here is doing well - and remember, it's only three short months until both football and women's volleyball seasons start. The WAC still hasn't posted the latter's 2008 schedule, but the first game last season was played on August 24 so we can assume that this year, it'll probably be within a day or two of that date.

On a more somber note, our 20-year-old car was vandalized in our driveway sometime between Sunday evening and yesterday morning; however, we didn't grasp the extent of the damage until today when we took it in to be repaired. That's all cash - no insurance coverage. Hope that our govt rebate check comes quickly.

  140. Garret:

Great news that the QBs and some others are here!

  144. Garret:

Chancellor Hinshaw issued a statement about the Sugar Bowl List. Here is the part that seems to refer to not releasing names for people who paid for their expenses.

After returning from the Sugar Bowl, our employees had to accumulate and check all of the information about the costs, a sizeable undertaking while doing their normal jobs. As that was being completed, we did alert our employees, and their unions, that, to comply with the 92F request, we would be releasing the names of all employees whose expenses were paid with any Bowl proceeds. That was done to ensure they were fully aware of any and all costs and also out of respect for people’s concern about being subjected to publicity -- a concern justified by the attention this has received.

  145. Garret:

More about the Utah State QB who is transferring to BYU.

Riley Nelson was the good son and grandson, and for at least one year, by putting his wishes to the side.

But maybe that was the plan all along.

Back in 2005 when he led the Logan Grizzlies to the Class 3A State Championship, Nelson's stature in the community rivaled that of Utah State basketball coach Stew Morrill.

Utah State won out, but the weight of the entire valley and university was on the shoulders of the 17 year-old signal caller as he was making his decision. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather all had ties to the local university in one way or another.

The Aggies football team hadn't has a winning season in his lifetime — it seemed like. He would be immediately seen as the savior of a football program.

In his first career start the following week, Nelson led the Aggies to a 13-12 victory over Fresno State. The following week he nearly led the Aggies to a road win over San Jose State.

He had an easy out. He would go on his LDS Church mission and let national letter of intent expire. BYU would come calling with a full-ride and he could part ways with Utah State from thousands of miles away without the need of offering a face-to-face explanation to the coaches who put their faith in him that he would return.

Instead, he made the announcement through his father on Memorial Day.

  146. Hoohiki:

How about arranging a big Tsaiko welcome to the new and old guys and inviting them to the next CC? We need to show them how we support our boys here in Hawaii.

  147. Garret:

Nice to hear what one of the defenders who faced UH says. Very complimentary of Hawaii and its fans.

MK: What was it like facing Hawaii’s high-powered offense every year?

SF: It was fun. You knew you were going to get a chance to see a lot of balls, and you knew that when you went down there their crowd was going to be into it. It’s a beautiful place and the fans support them really well. They just go straight out there and throw the ball and do what they do no matter what. You’ve also got Colt Brennan, he had all the Heisman hype around him at the beginning of the year, so it was pretty cool.

  148. Garret:

Chad Owens was not named Special Teams player of the week, but he had a great game as a returner and receiver over the weeken.

Other players considered for Special Team honors included Colorado's Chad Owens (eight returns for 158 yards)

  149. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Garret,

Do you know how much Chad Owens is being paid?

Does your 146 post refers to team members as opposed to old & new Tsaikos? If so, then any invitation even before the start of the season would need to be cleared with the Compliance Office before anything could be planned.

Something similar was discussed last year, but nothing happened. All I remember was BG trying to get permission and no one ever responding to his inquiries in a timely fashion.

I caught PTI debating whether they were impressed by the "open goal" one. Kornheiser (sp?) was, Wilbon wasn't. IMHO, 70 yards is a Lo-o-o-ong ways off. As JJ used to say, even doing that against air is impressive.

Former University of Hawai'i men's basketball guard Jared Dillinger is off to the Philippines where he looks to launch his pro career. Dillinger will play for Pampanga in the inaugural season of La Liga Pilipinas, a newly-formed basketball league.

The 6-5 guard enjoyed a breakout senior season for UH in 2007-08. After playing just six minutes as a junior, the Air Force transfer, appeared in all 30 games with 25 starts as a senior in 2007-08. He averaged 9.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg and 2.0 apg., while leading the team in three-point percentage (.383) and finishing second in steals (34) and three-pointers made (51).

Dillinger scored a career-high 19 points in one of the team's biggest wins of the season, a 94-71 rout over New Mexico State. Dillinger was also named the team's top defensive player during the end-of-season banquet.

  196. Garret:

    d1shima,

The older goal (12 years ago) was even more impressive because the ball went over the goalie into the top part of the net. From what I read, the other team's goalie was actually in the game, but he had tried to cheat upfield since I think LA was ahead by 1 goal and it was late in the game.

I've seen a LOT of hockey player miss an open net from much closer distances. Gretzky rarely missed those, which is why it was so jarring to me to see others miss them.

They’re calling this a 70-yard strike, and it’s quite impressive. At first glance, we thought the opponent had pulled its goalie; nope, the crafty Becks just caught the bloke out of position.

    ST,

Nice photo of your class! I wish that I had taken a photo of my first class at Santa Clara. The funny thing is that it was a grad class and the majority of the students were older than me and had been working in the wireless industry for awhile...the first question I got was from a 50+ year old guy (I was just 30 then) who had been working as an engineer since before I was born and he asked "why are you qualified to teach this class". I gave my credentials, he accepted them (or he was polite, at least he didn't walk out of the classroom), and we went on with the class.

I should have thought of taking a photo. Though if I had a guy like the one that is behind ST in the photo, maybe that is for the best.

  222. Garret:

NFL teams are about to make character issues even MORE important for draft picks...Colt and Bess had to answer so many questions about their problems that occurred before they even entered UH, and that was before this policy. Having the team get fines if their players mess up was a big change by itself, but having teams lose draft picks if they have multiple players with off-the-field problems will make teams really stress this issue now!

FOXSports.com has learned new league rules resulting in fines for clubs whose players are suspended for off-field violations begin June 1. But the NFL is pardoning franchises whose players' legal problems occurred before then.

Goodell announced the policy change last week and said he may ultimately begin yanking draft choices from teams with multiple player violations. The moves add teeth to the personal conduct policy Goodell introduced in April 2007. Since Super Bowl XLII, the same number of players have gotten arrested or cited (27) as in the same span following last year's championship game.

    Good evening Tsaikos,

Frack - got beginnings of a cold. At least we had Sudafed in the house. Hope I can kick this quick. I just took some cuz I now have a headache with a runny nose and scratchy throat. Don't think I got any herbal tea in the house.

Aloha to the Smiths. Ditto the sentiments voiced here.

BTW, I have a young coworker who's a Gator alum. He has a man-crush on TT. Every time I pass his desk, I gotta look at the Heisman picture on his computer desktop (sometimes 2 - he has 2 monitors!). Ughh.

    Hope everyone stays healthy.

  243. gigi-hawaii ©:

I have to agree, pidgin is hard to read and slows down the eyes. Sometimes, I just don't read the comment at all because it's so frustrating.

  244. gigi-hawaii ©:

Jm, it took me 4 weeks to get over my bad cold -- sinus congestion and bad cough.

  245. LizKauai:

gigi- do you have the same problem listening to pidgin? It's really intended as a spoken language.

  246. LizKauai:

jm2375- hot gimchi soup with tofu is the cold-killer around here.

Fresh ginger tea is also a good one.

  247. gigi-hawaii ©:

No, I can understand pidgin when it is spoken. But certain foreign accents -- like Filipino and Indian -- are really hard for me.

  248. gigi-hawaii ©:

I remember calling Dell customer service and an Indian woman with a strong accent answered. What a frustrating experience. I couldn't understand a word she said and had to hang up.

  249. LizKauai:

gigi- when I want to understand an unfamiliar accent (I have a friend who is Chinese and has a high-pitched voice and strong accent), I listen neutrally- rather than trying to decipher each word, it's like becoming a sieve and catching the words as they fall through.

Like looking at a "magic window". Use peripheral vision rather than looking at the details.
Amazing how much information can be deciphered!

  250. FloridaTed:

    Hi, Gigi,

  251. FloridaTed:

Sorry, I meant clean-up, not credit.

  252. gigi-hawaii ©:

Liz, I know what you mean. However, when the words are technical for the computer, that's hard to do.

  253. jm2375:

    GG -

Shoulda seen the problems I had last year with United customer service. IMO Customer Service for the US should *never* be outsourced overseas. We had award tickets and were trying to come home earlier than scheduled (we scheduled the trip about 3 wks in advance, so we took what we could get). I was on the phone with them at least once a day. Once I talked to a supervisor. I called back later that day and asked to speak to that person, but the operator said he had no idea who that person was and they were probably in a different area!! Ended up paying $100 per person to change the routing from MIA-DEN-HNL to MIA-DEN-SFO-HNL!!! The flight from SFO was the same one coming from Denver and we ended up on that one anyway, because the flight from DEN was delayed. Grrrr. :?

  254. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Hi Ted,

I am sorry but I have no time to help you. I have to babysit and deal with distributors of my own books, which entails packing boxes, driving to Mililani where Booklines is located, or to the post office to mail stuff to Baker & Taylor on the mainland.

I suggest you find or start a critique group comprised of other writers, who will read 5 pages of their double spaced work at a time and critique each other's work.

Try the National Writers Association. There might be a chapter in your town. Google them. I used to belong to a chapter and we would critique each other's work.

    Good luck.

  255. LizKauai:

Yeah, pidgin is a good shortcut language when the conversants are on the same page on a familiar subject.

My first exposure was immersion in the many times aforementioned fine dining restaurant at Kauai Resort in the 70's. I was never a waitress before that time and had to learn the job and take direction from a Filipina head waitress and Portagee head hostess.

Eh Leez- go in da keechen and get me one da kine!

  256. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Jm,

I sure hope that doesn't happen to me!

If for some reason, my flights in and out of Japan are delayed, I hope JAL customer service has people who can speak decent English.

  257. gigi-hawaii ©:

    haha Liz, that's hilarious!

  258. FloridaTed:

    Thanks, Liz,

It was just a shot in the dark. But I would like a professional editor go over my own edit before I submit it to an agent. It's hard to be objective doing your own edit. The book is also almost ready for a movie script. I do have a group of writers, but once a week 15 minutes of reading is slow and cumbersome. I may have somebody in Seattle, we'll see. Thanks again.

They were speaking in pidgin and I understood what they were saying except for certain nouns and a few choice verbs (I speak Hawaiian pidgin versus Caribbean pidgin). Stephen,

I always thought that taking group photos were one of the hardest things we have to do. Preschoolers and Kindergarteners are a challenge, and my son's Cub Scout pack is realy tough. However, I can understand the limited attention span of 6 year olds.
The worst by far are adults at their high school reunion, usually drinking, not paying listening to instructions and generally being pains in the a$$e$. Needless to say nowadays we're always "booked" when requests to do reunions come in.
One way to keep control of the group is to do the "serious" photo with the promise of being able to take a "fun" one if they do the serious one okay. I'm guessing, kind of what you did with your class.
BTW gotta check those kids for those gang signs (guy in the back in red)

    The Tsai-ko Restaurant Boss...

Who coordinated the food and collected the money for Blog Party 3 at Murphy's?
Who manages and collects the money for most Cattle Calls?

So, who's the most qualified to specify the menu items, modifications, and collect for the June 19 Cattle/Karaoke Call?

I am pleased and grateful to announce that Al will be the "Food Boss" and cashier for the June 19th Call. He will collect that night to cover the buffet meal costs, any additional goodies, tax, tip, and a modest $2 per person karaoke song charge. He will calculate costs and announce as we get closer. Beverages and cocktails will be on your own.

    Thanks, Al!

Al ~ You named the general ingredients to the salad. She also adds finely grated celery, carrots, maui onions and a can of baby sweet peas. Of course the key is the Mayo, and just enough to meld it all together. Sprinkle the paprika on top, an the black olives for deco and viola!

Getting the potatoes to the right consistency and having a sufficient amount of boiled cackle berries properly seasoned with garlic and onion salt is paramount.

Sudafed and the generic brand available from Long's are still available, but are now behind-the-counter and require approximately ten minutes of time and three different procedures to purchase plus photo id.

Assuming that Lingle signs the latest law - or allows it to go into law w/o her signature - still another step requiring instantaneous central electronic registration of all purchases will go into effect in 2010. The records will be made available to law enforcement officials who will scrutinize all purchases on a regular basis, note who is buying these drugs, and allow them to investigate possible criminal activities without getting a warrant.

The reason for this added step is that the original laws passed in 2004 and 2005 have all but halted mass purchases of pseudoephedrine extracted from these pharmaceuticals; however, lower quality ingredients are coming in from the Far East through Mexico and are now being used to make ice.

Unfortunately, the quality of the ice is lower and causes all kinds of physical & psychological problems so that drug addicts are going back into the business of making their own even if it means driving from one store to the next to buy packages of 96 tablets. The new law will stop that from happening.

The Sudafed PE and other brands including generic are unfortunately a big waste of money. Study after study show that the PE is no more effective than a placebo. In fact, according to researchers, PE was first used in these over-the-counter cold medications but the psuedoephdrine took over the industry back in the early 60s.

Ask me someday what my position is on this.

I would ask, but I'm afraid you'd tell more than I'd wanna know W/Doc. The prefix 'pseudo' should be the clue to these brilliant bath tub druggist, that it's a placebo. Ah! I hope they overdupe themselves.

  316. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

Back in graduate school, several of us worked a major research project on pidgin English under the supervision of UH faculty from the English, Sociology, and Linguistics Departments.

Although many of the conclusions were anticipated, a couple of ones came up which no one expected. Based upon that study, I later asked my own students to focus on becoming bi- or even tri-lingual.

  317. Jason:

I wish I saved a copy of that article that Bro. Mike wrote for the Honolulu Weekly many, many, many, many, many years ago on Pidgin. The Hawaiian Studies Dept at UH uses it in the HWST 107 reader.

  318. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

    Kekoa

If legislators are so concerned about this nefarious cold medication, then why don't they ask Congress to ban its manufacture outright. Unfortunately, Congress knows how to count - Big Pharma spends about $60 billion a year on lobbying and election support so it will be pretty hard to get that to happen.

CHANGE OF SUBJECT: How's your dad doing? We're facing something similar but from a distance with DrDoc's mother. Fortunately, three of his brothers & sisters live within 500 miles so they take monthly turns caring for her because she refuses to leave The Old Family Home. Another sister is in London and we're here in Hawai`i so all we can do is send money and call once or twice a week.

Agree. Cold Meds are too much of a money maker for the Pharma.

Pops? He's doing better today after his fall. I was told by the doctors that the next time he falls, take the same precautions in stopping the bleeding, but TAKE HIM TO THE NEAREST ER ASAP. They cautioned that because he is on Coumadin, it is imperaive for them to scan for possible internal bleeding.

Prayers to Dr. Doc's mom...losing my mom to cancer last year was a real blow. She was my biggest fan and supported every sport I thought I was good at. Most times the ONLY fan! Bwhahaha!

Good morning Mr. and Mrs .Tsai-ko, and all the ships at sea!

Finally got up to post #200 then had to take a look at Mr. Tsai's 1st class photo. HA! Hilarious!!! Really reminds me of class photos from elementary school. You kow how those always had one kid what was doing something weird? Except that the photo shows just a couple of kids "posing" normally. Beautiful photo -- one for the ages. I think if you posted that photo in five years and asked those kids to respond that would be interesting.

  324. wafan:

Mr. and Mrs. Smith. . .

Welcome to Tsai-ko land. Kind of like Disneyland except we have only Goofy's and the Mad-Hatter's here. HA!

  325. wafan:

    LizK . . .

I am a pretty optimistic person so, yes, I believe (note the lowercase "b") my weekend will be filled with Warriors and Tsai-kos.

  326. wafan:

Okay. For those of you guys that like specialty coffees.

Out here in a place called Bonney Lake, WA. The barristas at several of the coffee huts wear bikinis and in several cases wear a lot less. All they serve is coffees. Nothing else.

Business if booming at those places. Those huts where barristas wear regular clothing have noted a drop in sales. Geez, I wonder why?

Anyhow, there are some civic-minded people who are trying to shut these places down.

  327. Garret:

This note ties together UH, Florida, and Georgia. Florida's coach is going to be using Georgia's celebration to motivate his team to work hard.

Florida coach Urban Meyer made sure to point out that his team has more rivals than just Georgia even though the one rivalry game that Gators fans and players figure to circle on the calendar this year is the Nov. 1 game in Jacksonville against the Bulldogs.

Georgia players celebrated excessively in the end zone after Richt instructed them to draw a penalty after the first score in the Bulldogs' 42-30 win last year.

Meyer said video of the scene will be used with his team.

"It will," Meyer said. "We can't concern ourselves with that right now. that's a big game. We're playing Hawaii (in the opener) ... so we're not trying to motivate our team through several workouts with Georgia."

Meyer won't deny he's mentioned the celebration this offseason.

"I won't say that," Meyer said. "Our focus isn't that."

  328. Garret:

SEC coaches are also in favor of the early signing period. So far I do not know of a group that is *not* in favor of the early signing period.

An early signing day was the hot topic when SEC football coaches went behind closed doors Tuesday on the first day of the conference's spring meetings.

They emerged with the majority of the 12 coaches favoring a December signing period to go along with the current February date, Kentucky coach Rich Brooks said.
