"Happy" days are here again

June 21st, 2008
By Stephen Tsai

One of our favorites is rejoining the Warrior football team.
David "Happy" Gilmore, a safety who completed his eligibility in 2003, will serve as a graduate assistant this season. Gilmore will work with the defensive backs.
"This is a great opportuity," Gilmore said. "I couldn't pass it up."
After earning his bachelor's degree in travel industry management, Gilmore managed a popular restaurant in Waikiki. He then moved to San Diego, where he has worked in the group-benefits business.
UH associate head coach Rich Miano and assistant coaches Nick Rolovich and Brian Smith urged head coach Greg McMackin to consider Gilmore.McMackin was the UH defensive coordinator in 1999, when Gilmore was a walk-on freshman.
"I don't think he knew me too much," Gilmore said. "I think I was fourth string."
But Gilmore was a hard-working player and a diligent student of the game. He ascended the depth chart, and at the start of his junior season, he was awarded a football scholarship. He was a part-time starter as a senior, when he played despite a herniated disk. Gilmore said he will move to Hawai‘i next Saturday. He will stay with former teammate Keani Alapa, now a police officer.
"I'm excited to get back and work with college kids, helping them graduate and do the right things," Gilmore said.

That's Gilmore (green jersey) making the tackle in practice:

Defensive end David Veikune has gained 5 pounds and now weighs 255.

Expect big things this season from cornerback Calvin Roberts and strong safety Erik "E-Rob" Robinson. They, like cornerback Ryan Mouton, were delayed in starting their UH careers last summer while awaiting certification from the NCAA Clearinghouse. Now that Robinson (pictured on the right) has fully healed from shoulder surgery, both players should be ready entering their senior year.

Happy birthday to Midori7, a pure-hearted UH sports fan and a great neighbor. Here is Midori7 (left) with Ronnie:

Good morning Tsaiko's. Had a buncha post toasties to catch up on since the other night. The Ronnie & Rob show with birthday boy Rich and the "WWW" as the feature act was awesome. Wait until the Blog Bash!

Met up with Liz at my cousin's funeral on Kauai Friday. We laughed and joked about the night before! It actually helped buoy my spirits at this sad event. Thanks Liz for being there, the family really appreciate what you do.

My iphone batt died from neglect, so sorry I couldn't hook up with you for a mini-CC before flying back from Kauai.

Good morning Tsaikos. A happy birthday to Midori7 and have a great day.

BHF2, sounds like you had a lot of fun. IMHO, the UH media would probably do more, but ST promotes their program daily that they don't know what else to add. actually get plenty other things to promote at UH and they should not be afraid to post or pass info to the media on at least a biweekly basis. they were hired to do media work, not administrative work. can you imagine if ST's boss hired a reporter and all he did was administrative work and not put out anything on a daily basis. that is what appears to be the case with the UH media guys. that is one of the major reason why the other schools always try to be in the news.

    Hi Brew!

  44. brew808:

Outstanding game last night by Kurt Suzuki! Not only did he have to catch seven different pitchers over 11 innings, but he had his biggest offensive performance of his career! He went 4-5:
    - a 2-out, 2-run HR to take the lead in 4th,
    - a 2-out, 2-run 2B to take back the lead in the 8th,
    - and the game-winning rbi with a 2B in the bottom of the 11th!

His batting average is back up to a respectable .278 - not bad for a "defensive player". Congratultaions Kurt!!!

"you could hear my tongue clicking against the top of my mouth." - Edward Scissorhands? :D

"Cure: eat li hing mui prior to speaking." - Alternative cure = shot of CR from Tsaiko special shot-glass prior to speakiing!

  81. Addahknowsports©:

    Pauoa Boy-

That is cool! I guess that's why we can read chicken scratch.

  82. Kekoa:

Brew ~ I tot-so school was pau!...I get one headache from just reading da kine words like vicious/visual/vital/vitreous/viscous/visceral/virus/virulen/et al.

Das auryte, I going back sleep. I tink I get brain hammajag!

  83. gigi-hawaii ©:

hey Brew, if I drank CR prior to speaking on the radio, I would end up SLURRING my speech. So no can!

  84. I Believe:

Kekoa- e kala mai for missing you on Garden Island!

  85. Addahknowsports©:

CR makes people do lots of things...like....picking up a mic and singing karaoke...or taking in the stars from the bed of a truck.

I'd be afraid to eat li hing mui before public speaking. I'd be afraid that the salt would get stuck in my throat and I'd go into a coughing fit and paramedics would have to be called.

  86. gigi-hawaii ©:

actually, come to think of it, it was not li hing mui. It was LEMON PEEL.

    wow! salivating even more now.

  87. Pauoa Boy:

Yups the best thing is if you can actually read that, then you can handle CR cause das how dah words going look anyway.

  88. Stretch:

    Good MorningTsaikos!!

Happy Birthday to Midori7, I hope you enjoy your party at Chuck E Cheese.

  89. gigi-hawaii ©:

PB, yep, das right! I could read it with no trouble. Crazy, huh?

  90. duffer:

Happy Birthday to Midori7, I hope you enjoy your party at Chuck E Cheese.

    Too funny! :-)

    BTW...
What did you and Rich shoot at Waikele?

  91. brew808:

Okay - see you Tsaikos later. I've got to find someplace cool to hide! We're well on the way to passing yesterday's toasty 103/104! Almost like being in PB, MeiLing, or las vegas country. 8)

  92. Loa:

    Happy Birthday Midori7!

hey, what happened to the numbers?

  93. Stretch:

duffer - no shots just beer!! LOTS of beer. If you are talking about golf, we started out good then I guess the alcohol started to kick in, it went downhill. We had a great time, along with my friend Sleez.

  94. Pauoa Boy:

See, and my english teacher thought I couldn't write cause das how went look to him, please, whatevas, everybody can read that

  95. Stretch:

What happens when a switch hitter faces a siwtch pitcher?? It happened Thursday night in a Class A game.

  96. whitey:

M Wie shot 1 over today, with 4 birdies and 5 (five@#$%$#$) bogeys. So now she is -1 for the tournament. Not good. Somehow her course management sucks or she get brain lock. I still support her, but I think it is getting time to seriously consider changing her coach. Now swing is not only problem, also putting (ave 28), but she can't hit the fairways worth beans. Hit only 17 fairways in 54 tries. That is terrible. Can only hope she does better, but at this stage, i think it is like p-----ing in the wind.

  97. Pauoa Boy:

whitey - Wie does need a better coach cause everytime I hear about her, it's always something wrong. I cannot play golf for chit so I cannot talk, but everytime I hear about her in one of the tournaments it's never good news.

  98. gigi-hawaii ©:

But Wie has been playing better this year than last year!!! Think positive.

  99. addahknowjoe:

    Hau'oli la hanau Midori!

My two proverbs to answer your burning questions of life:

-The longer you live, da oldah you iz-

-Wea eva you go, dea you stay-

Now, go out there and enjoy in the relief of knowing.

  100. gigi-hawaii ©:

We are wondering how many balls to take to Liz's golf tournament next Sunday. Hubby saw 24 balls for $30 at Costco. He might buy them next Friday and we will take 6 each with us.

  101. Pauoa Boy:

Yes she has been playing way better than last, just hope she can improve her game and be the female Tiger Woods without the injury

  102. whitey:

Wie's game now reminds me of when the greatest UH pitcher, Derek Tatsuno, came to UH, pitching coach tried to change his natural style, then they realize that it not going work, so let Tats pitch and rest is UH history. Then Tats, goes to Japan and they change his style and end his career. Michelle's golf history is follwing a similar path, change coach, change swing, lose game, and now make excuses of getting better, but in reality, is getting worse. Swing looks like a robot that has absolutely no confidence or trust.

  103. Stretch:

gigi - you will need a LOT more than 6 each. If it is only 9 holes, you will do fine with 24 balls for the both of you, I hope.

  104. gigi-hawaii ©:

hmm, Stretch, you expect us to lose that many balls? sheesh. but I will tell hubby what you said.

  105. gigi-hawaii ©:

so refresh my memory. Who putts first? The guy whose ball is farthest from the hole -- or the one who is nearest to the hole?

  106. Stretch:

gigi - just being realistic. it is easy to hit a golf ball at a driving range that is 200 yards side and no trees. When there are trees, bushes, water etc.. around and you only have a narrow target, can you hit it there??

  107. Stretch:

whoever is furthest away plays first.

  108. gigi-hawaii ©:

that is really strange that the guy who is farthest away putts first cause what if his ball hits someone else' ball or quarter and veers off the route?

you would think the guy nearest would putt first so as to get rid of obstacles for other putters.

  109. Barry Markowitz:

g-nalo, some of us wish we would be XXL by '09 (including my doctor). Stretch, I sure appreciate my Tsaiko shot glass...having second thoughts about sending it to the punk kid in LA. But if SteveM wanted my son to have a XXXL Tsaiko black shirt...I might start saving my shekels to buy one.

  110. LizKauai:

    Finally uploading pix.

So gigi- this link may be useful to you and hubby:
    http://www.usga.org/playing/rules/animations/index.html

Remember, we are playing "best ball" golf on Sunday. So no worry, beef curry. You do not have to make "every shot count".

    breakfast time!

    i waited for you awh.
    what you got lost?

I was at Genji but was in the other room. Went to the bathroom on your guys side a few times and looked like you guys had a good time. One of these days, I will come out and intro myself to everyone. Sorry I was just lurking but still nervous to meet everyone.

  112. whitey:

gigi, it looks like Michelle is doing better, but she is not playing golf like the rest of us. this is her bread and butter and to play like she is playing, it stinks. it is time to stop using excuses like, oh, i am getting better, hitting the ball better, etc. if she is hitting is better, now come she no can hit the fairways????? even stretch can do better than 17 fairways in 54 holes (and he drinking beer).

  113. chawan_cut:

Happy days indeed... for Mr. Gilmore
    and our own

    Midori7!!!

  114. gigi-hawaii ©:

thanks, Liz. I could not download them. Maybe I'll try downloading Flash Player later.

Whitey, we all want Michelle to win. What place is she in now? How many strokes off the lead? The main thing is she made the cut this time -- especially when you consider she missed the cut at more than 1 tournament last year.

  115. UHfan808:

Happy Saturday Morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!

*Happy* Gilmore joins once again! What a wonderful Saturday morning! Too bad when I awoke suddenly at 7:25 this morning I thought it was Friday again. Had to check and double check the date on the blog just to make sure . . . . . . . .

  116. gigi-hawaii ©:

haha UHfan, every day is like Saturday for me. Us retired folks got it made. But, wait, you will have your turn later in life.

  117. Stretch:

even stretch can do better than 17 fairways in 54 holes (and he drinking beer).

thank eh whitey, you make me feel so good!! maybe she should drink beer while playing.... ooops, she not 21 yet, no can.

  118. UHfan808:

    . . . . . . it's Midor7's Birthday day!

Happy Happy Very Happy Birthday Midori7! ! !

  119. whitey:

well, got to go. get one game at kahili and kind of last minute, but got things done this am, so see you all.

stretch, i know you do better than that, so was only kidding, but everyone else at the LPGA is shooting in the 60's and she goes backwards. they all playing the same course. interesting to see what kind of excuse she uses today. oh, i hit some good shots and missed some putts. i want her to do well, but at this rate, @##$$%^$$###.

    see you all.

  120. UHfan808:

    mmmmmmm...*tuning fork*...

    Happy Birthday to you,
    Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday Dear Twin Sista Midori7,

Come on UHFan808 - get wit it. It's TSAIKO not Tsycho, where you been??

  124. Pauoa Boy:

I think I'm with whitey that Wie needs to step her game up...alot actually...

  125. UHfan808:

gigi, You're lucky to play everyday. My life mantra is to s-t-r-e-t-c-h o-u-t days, months, quarters, and years to feel as long as I can. Maybe I practice this thinking sooo good that one day when I can retire all Saturdays will last f-o-r-e-v-e-r. And Tsaiko-gate day will last an entire week!!! Wowow!

  126. LizKauai:

Time to take a nap and then get some work done around the house.

Kekoa- no worries- I just left you a message that I was too pooped to drive the pix over to you!

    Memories made!

  127. Pauoa Boy:

Stretch - maybe she still sipping on the CR, you know how these Tsaikettes are supposedly alchoholics

  128. UHfan808:

    Stretch- Yep same ting!

  131. Stretch:

  132. LizKauai:

    Wreck- emails are bouncing.

  133. UHfan808:

Mebbe Wie forgot to practice her fundamentals. (ST- you got her phone numba??? j/k)

  134. Pauoa Boy:

Uhfan808 - Realleh so that's what it's called these days ah, now you guys get the code words hmmm...haha nah

  135. Pauoa Boy:

Maybe Wie need to practice her backswing on the Wii, garrans she do moa bettah...

Bottom 9th Georgia vs Stanford in CWS = 10:8. Stanford batting with two outs; batter up count = 3-1

  138. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

Glad that everyone had fun at Club Genji's the other night. Liz and BigHiloFan2 - I really would enjoy meeting up with the two of you at a future event just to talk about life -perhaps at one of the fall T-Gate parties when we can stay longer than 20 - 30 minutes.

BTW - went up to the Sheriff Center yesterday to pay for the football tickets. The receipt is now posted on the bulletin board and the August calendar page has the 16th circled which is when the tickets themselves should be in hand.

SPEAKING OF TICKETS: I see that the men's basketball season tickets are being promoted heavily. What about women's season volleyball tickets? I never saw the ads for them. When I asked that question at the ticket window yesterday, I was told that no season tickets are available. Is there a limit to the number sold? Or is the season sold out already?

  139. LizKauai:

Doc- mahalo for my foot relief present! That was sooo thoughtful and kind of you!
Will yak atcha at the next T-gate!

    August 16, eh?
    Ok Tickets!!!

  140. Jason:

    Happy birthday, Midori7!

Nice to hear David Gilmore is coming back.

Stretch: Here's ESPN.com's story on the switch pitcher vs. switch hitter, complete with video.

Ralph and Hiflyer: Please read the post below for instructions on how to get the link. I'm updating my address book, so I don't have everyone's e-mail address.

Okay, I have compiled a list of photographs and videos, and the people in them. Same as last time — for those that went to Genji last night, I will send you a link to a private album that contains all of these photos and videos. If you would like any of your photos/videos removed from said private album, please let me know. And if you would like to give permission for your photo/video to be posted in a public album to be shared on the blog, please let me know as well. E-mail me at jnagaoka (at) hawaii.rr.com, and I will send you the link to the private album.

(At the same time, if you could update me with your blog name and preferred e-mail addresses, as I mentioned in post #84.)

Final score -- sorry took so long-- Georgia beats Stanford. UGA 10: Stanford 8.

  142. Jason:

BTW, I've noticed that even in IE7, the trackback link doesn't work. To link to a certain post, you have to copy the URL, then cut out the last part — the #comment-_____ part. You add that to the end of the normal URL (after yyyy/mm/dd/title/). Then the thread loads, but it doesn't go to the post. So what you do is let the entire page load, then click on the URL and hit Enter. Then it goes to that post.

  143. midori7:

    Hi everyone!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes! You guys are da bestest!

Wonderful news that David Gilmore will be back at UH!

ST: thanks for the football pics, esp of Veikune (one of my favorites)

Stretch: according to tv guide, no more Rainbow Celebration tonight.

  144. Jason:

When I said trackback, I meant permalink. Geez, I'm mixing up all my terminology lately. First memory sticks for SD cards, now this. :-D

  145. Stretch:

midori7 - crap, now I need to figure out what I am going to do tonight. Thanks for the heads up. I would have been sad to have cancelled all my plans to stay home to watch a show that doesn't exist.

Okay. You can buy Pamela Anderson's Viper right now on the auctionnetwork. Better have some bucks.

Sorry, I see a lot of Marilyn Monroe stuff to come, but no Paula Abdul for ST. I don't think she's ancient enough.

Auction is on break. I was just $60,000 of being able to afford that Viper.

  153. oldie:

    Oops...$60,000 short of

  154. Stretch:

oldie - ohhh, okay, I figured Paula Adbul was same age as ST so would have her stuff on that auction.... hahahahaha (does this mean I will be smuuuud??)

so Midori, how will you celebrate your birthday?

  157. gigi-hawaii ©:

BTW, Liz, June 28 is extra special. Besides landing on Kauai, we will be celebrating our 28th wedding anniversary! Hope to have an elegant dinner at the hotel and hopefully, the hotel will have a nightclub where we can watch an exciting show,

Aloha Tsaikos and Warrior Nation folks!

    A Joyous, Fun, Love-filled HAPPY BIRTHDAY to MIDORI7 :D

Ok ~ Batteries are charged, lots of rest. Just pau eat 3 of the most excellent doggie adobo taco with refried beans and mexcali-rice. Brought home some of the sweetest Hayden Mangoes from Kauai. So some tender slices of those ice-cold sweeties will hold me until tonites Grad partay in the Enchanted Lakes area.

Can you imagine what a dog fight it would be if they throw the football out in middle of the practice field and tell them, "first man to pick it up and live long enuff to bring it to me," gets a starting position...at least until next week?! Ouch!

  162. wafan:

    bhf2 . . .

The next time you are up at Manoa would you please teach E-Rob how to properly do a shaka? That Hook 'em Horns sign is definitely out of place.

Or maybe Midori7 could sweet-talk him into doing it correctly?

Sporting News recently came out with its ranking of the top players in the Pac 10, by position. The top quarterback and top linebacker are both Samoans.

    See: http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/24800194/ .

Congratulations to Willie Tuitama at QB and Rey Maualuga at MLB!

Rey grew up in Waipahu. Here are two Usos Hawaii should have gotten but did not. Maybe if UH had a better head coach UH could have had a shot at these two. Doubt it though. Players like Tuitama and Maualuga will never play for a program such as UH until UH gets better coaches, guys who have proven themselves at the highest level, guys like Mosi, Kenny, or Afoa.

Manti Teo will likely go to USC to play where Seau, Tatupu, Maualuga and Maiava have played or now play. To play at a place like UH, with its current coaching staff, and thus inability to attract prime players, would be foolish.

Look at what is happening now with Satele.

Satele should be a starter. I have seen this kid play. He should not be second team. Big heart, desire, never die attitude, athleticism second to none as compared to the current crop of linebackers. Maybe his playing style or personality doesn't suit the style or personality of the current coaching staff, but this should not be the reason why he shouldn't start. The best should start. Satele should be a starter. Somebody must be blind. If UH wants to win, it will need to make better decisions about its starters.

At any other Pac 10 school, Satele would likely be a starter at this point. He is no Maualuga, but the kid is better than the other LB's at UH at this time.

Funaki should also be the #1 QB. Hands down, the best of the crop.

He was pretty good last December.

  187. Jason:

prepplayer: I don't agree with your assessment of the coaching staff, their qualifications, and their motives, but I do agree with you that Satele is a heck of a player. But he's been bit by the injury bug, and that's set him back. That said, if UH were running a 3-4, I'd have him penciled in as a starter. But in the 4-3, there's the problem of too many players for too few positions — and you can't forget about R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane and Mana Lolotai as well.

    Happy Anniversary Ronnie's parents!

  197. Garret:

West Virginia is a big-bucks BCS conference school...and they are getting squeezed by the rise in travel costs due to gas prices. If it can affect schools with huge budgets like this, schools like Utah State and Idaho will really feel the price increases this year.

There's not much that the travel coordinator for West Virginia's athletic department can do about it, though, just like there's not much she or anyone else can do when it's time to fill up her own car with gas.

"How are gas prices affecting you?'' Cavender asked. "Maybe you can cut something here or there, but at the end of the day there's not much you can do about it.''

Rising fuel prices are putting the pinch on WVU's athletic budget in all sorts of ways. Assistant athletic director for finance Russ Sharp points to everything from fuel to run the vehicles used by athletic department staffers - both cars for transportation and equipment used for maintenance - to the costs incurred by the department's food management service, Sodexho, for shipments from suppliers.

But where the real sticker shock comes is for the huge amount of travel required by athletic teams competing in a Big East Conference that stretches from Florida to Rhode Island up and down the East Coast to Chicago and Milwaukee in the Midwest. Throw in the occasional non-conference football game in Colorado or a bowl game in Arizona and the costs can be overwhelming.

It starts with a bus trip to Pittsburgh International Airport that in the past few years has increased from $600 to $700 to nearly $1,000 now, includes costs for more bus transportation in the destination city and can be sandwiched around a chartered flight that costs $240,000.

That's the tab for the charter on which West Virginia's football team will fly to Colorado in September.

"I remember when I submitted our list [of needed flights] to Delta, which does our charters,'' Cavender said. "The guy I deal with sent me back the list of prices with a note attached. It just said, 'Sorry, our fuel costs have gone up 60 percent.' ''

  198. LizKauai:

    :!: HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, RONNIE'S PARENTS :!:

  199. Garret:

The reduction in flights and the reduction in the size of planes (smaller planes use less gas) also affects teams when they travel, especially the non-revenue teams (any team outside of football and men's basketball) since they fly on commercial airlines.

Most of West Virginia's athletic air travel in other sports is done on commercial flights, however. Sometimes that's not a problem. Often it is a juggling act, though.

"It's not just the cost of the flights, it's the availability,'' Cavender said. "A lot of airlines have gone to smaller planes [and, in some cases, fewer departures] and it's tough to call and say we need 26 seats on one flight for the soccer team. An airline will say, 'OK, we have 10 seats on this flight and 16 on this one.' Then they'll look around a little more and say, 'OK, here's one with 26 seats, but this is what it's going to cost you.' ''

  200. Garret:

Another hidden cost for athletic travel that did not exist a few months ago. Now that airlines are charging for the first checked in bag, charging more for the second, and really increasing the fee for more than 2 bags, teams that have to travel with equipment are stuck with having to pay big fees.

Oh, and then there are the baggage fees that airlines have begun charging. US Airways just announced a $25 fee not for an extra bag, but for the first bag checked. Most airlines charge something for extra bags and even more for overweight bags. And athletic teams travel with equipment.

Cavender said that when the school's baseball team returned from Tampa and the Big East baseball tournament last month, the team not only was split up between Southwest and US Airways flights but also had to pay for extra bags checked on the US Airways flight.

  203. homey not registered:

Heard that former Mililani MLB Josh Andrews may be walking on to UH. Either that or he's just running around at UH for the summer.

  204. bonar:

I like Coach Mack's outreach to local recruits, but his and the staff's extra efforts will only go so far, especially with the top 5 local recruits and recruits with local ties that are hounded by PAC 10 teams. As it is we got pretty lucky with one such player, Pisa Tinoisamoa, who but for unfortunate personal circumstances, would never have come here, great recruiters or not. I, too, am concerned with the next couple years and whether the changeover in staffs coupled with what could be a tough next couple of years record wise will set us back a little.

  205. Pauoa Boy:

Howzit gangeh, see you guys took dah english lesson today

  206. bonar:

I wonder to what extent the gas crunch will have on UH's already dire recruiting related travel constraints/challenges. I recall that Hawaiian has stated its commitment to flying the coaches out for trips (or something like that), but obviously the offer was gratuitous.

  207. PIAA DS:

Yes, Josh Andrews is walking on at UH. He never enrolled at Navy, then went to W.Oregon and left. Decided he wanted to be home.

And isnt it Tuitama's 3rd year on the field?...I saw him play as a redshirt freshman and that was two seasons ago vs. USC .... like his back up, Zona's #2 QB Another Poly boy named Bryson Beirne, out of Mid Pac/Pac5, dad played at UH, mom played at UH.

  208. PIAA DS:

Just curious, have any other D1 teams had 3 or more polynesian QB's in their history, except maybe Hawaii - or since Hawaii has become D1, have they had many polynesian QB's? (Chang doesnt count, he's local but not Poly) Arizona had George Malauulu, Willie Tuitama and Bryson Beirne...I think there was one more but I cant remember for sure.

  209. LizKauai [Believer]:

Thanks xs-homey and Doris for the news about Andrews!

  210. Pauoa Boy:

preplayer Sheesh bruddah how much of that Warrior Haterade you had, chillax killah. Like we said earlier not every great player will become a great coach. The coaching staff at UH needs time before you can make an honest opinion on whether or not they are worth being there. I'm sure Coach Mack didn't just pick anyone on his coaching staff. He obviously picked guys who he thought could help the program. Plus, no expect miracles to happen right away, building up the program takes time and changes are being made gradually.

Satele is a solid player but again the LB position is full of great solid players. If he really is that good he will start or get a lot of PT, which he probably will. Coach Mack is not like Coach Jones and doesn't have favorites, it's open competition everywhere so Satele has the chance to start.

I will agree with you that Inoke Funaki should start at QB as of right now. We don't know how the fall will play out but I'm sure if he continues to be consitent and improve he will be leading the team in the Swamp.

  217. expat:

    Garret,

Actually, smaller planes do not use less fuel... per person. It is FAR more efficient to fly 280 people on a single 777 than on four CRJ700s. The reason that airlines have been using greater numbers of departures with smaller regional planes has everything to do with marketing and NOTHING to do with efficiency. In fact, it is the principal reason that airports have been experiencing traffic delays the past few years. If you want to read some really good articles on the issue check out Patrick Smith's weekly column in Salon.

late night workouts at the gym are very exhausting, and if you're not prepared, it could really set you back. although we missed the both of you, i am glad that hubby got a chance to work that meal off. good job!!!

your photos were great also :) :):)

  239. Garret:

    expat,

Thank you for that input. I agree that the bigger planes would be more fuel efficient per person *if* all seats were filled. However, we know that there is reduced business travel during a downturn and a reduction in leisure travel also. Plus, more seats would mean lower prices to make sure the seats were filled, which is NOT want the airlines want to do now with gas prices so high.

  240. Garret:

Rising crude oil prices have made the forecast for the global airline industry to go from a projected profit of $4.5 bil to an estimated loss of over $6 bil at current oil prices!

Satele is a solid player but again the LB position is full of great solid players. If he really is that good he will start or get a lot of PT, which he probably will. Coach Mack is not like Coach Jones and doesn’t have favorites, it’s open competition everywhere so Satele has the chance to start.

    Pauoa Boy,

The thing is, last year it was *Mack*, not JJ, who determined who started at LB. And *Mack* picked Adam Leonard, Sol Elimimian, Brad Kalilimoku, with Blaze getting a lot of reps when he was healthy. I agree that Satele is an excellent player, but he was one player that was hurt when UH changed from Glanville's 3-4 to Mack's 4-3.

Adam, Sol, and Blaze make up an amazing starting LB group for UH. UH also has great depth at that position, with at least 4 guys (including Satele) who are worthy of starting spots. The good thing is that Mack's system rotates a lot of players so they all will get a chance to show what they can do. The downside is that only 3 can start and only those will get the most reps.

  243. Garret:

It is very sad that the coverage of the Titans has just been ignoring Jason Rivers. If you check out this photo album, they show a lot of other WRs but they ignore Rivers. And there have been a lot of articles lately on Titans WRs who are battling for roster spots...but none on Rivers.

  244. Garret:

Interesting article about how sports blogs have been changing over the years.

"Bloggers are maturing and realizing that we're moving out of the childhood age of this industry, into an awkward adolescence," said Robert Niles, who chronicles new media on his SensibleTalk.com website. "For some bloggers, they can see adulthood on the horizon."

In the early days, bloggers were driven by various motives. They scoured the Internet, gathering links to the best stories. They sought to offer sharper, funnier and more opinionated coverage than traditional news outlets.

They also wanted to get noticed.

Increased readership brought advertisers, and bloggers who made a name for themselves on the web attracted freelance writing assignments from newspapers and magazines. Will Leitch, the editor of Deadspin who is considered a pioneer in sports blogging, recently announced that he was moving to New York magazine.
