No blog Friday, Saturday
By Stephen Tsai
In support of the six unions representing The Honolulu Advertiser, this blog will not have any new posts Friday and Saturday.
We apologize for the stoppage.
The blog returns with fresh UH news on Sunday.
If you need any updates, feel free to call 525-8051 or email: sstsai@hawaii.edu.
See ya in a couple of days.
* * *
Now that Jim Leahey has reached agreement to return for another year as K5's play-by-play announcer for UH sports, the next task is to find a football analyst to succeed Jim Donovan.
The pool of candidates has restrictions. A candidate can't be employed by another local network station (Robert Kekaula, Kanoa Leahey, John Veneri),
Russell Yamanoha should be the favorite. He's funny, knowledgable and has broadcast experience.
Who else?
I always thought Matt Wright, a former UH linebacker, would be an excellent announcer.
And Kyle Mosely would be great, too.
Maybe Delbert Tengan?
What do you think?
* * *
Earvin Sione, a 2008 McKinley High graduate, is expected to delay enrolling at UH until January, enabling him to add bulk to his thin 6-foot-5 frame.
Sione then would be able to participate in spring practice and, after that, have five years to play four seasons.
Sione is expected to compete at wideout or safety. He also received permission to play for the Warrior volleyball team.
Wideout Matt Kiel, a transfer from Cabrillo College, is expected to redshirt this season. KIel also will play for the Warrior volleyball team. Kiel arrived in town this week. He participated in 7-on-7 unsupervised football workouts yesterday.
* * *
The lastest future Warrior, quarterback Corey Nielsen, participated in UH's Skills Camp yesterday morning. He returned to California last night. He's already dressed in the proper attire.
* * *
Again, it's been amazing the people from UH's past emerging at these camps. Here's David Hallums, who authored the "better than statehood" phrase after a basketball victory over Brigham Young in 1989. He is a police officer and a Pearl City High assistant football coach. Hallums said he's an avid blog reader who goes by the online name "Kawika."
* * *
Here's a blast from the future: Nick Maafala Jr., whose father was a tremendous high school athlete.
* * *
Ryan Grice-Mullins, who reluctantly admitted to being a blog reader, also attended the camp as an observer:

July 17th, 2008 at 9:00 am
Good morning to all of you Tsai-kos and Lurkers. It's another great day to be a Warrior. Thanks to ST's blog and all of his pictures, we are reminded of where the program came from and where it is going. ST posts pictures of our present Warriors, then he posts pictures of Buzzy Preston, Al Hunter, Leonard Peters, and Kawika Hallums, our Warriors from the past. To top it all off ST then posts pictures of Tui Tuiasosopo, Cory Nielsen, Kalua Noa, and Billy Ray Stutzmann, our future. Hopefully, guys like Nick Ma'afala Jr. will be moved by the mana and decide to become part of the 'ohana. Us Warriors from the past are so proud of today's version of Warriors, and of course the Warriors of the future. One big, huge 'ohana and brotherhood.
July 17th, 2008 at 9:01 am
Yes al, molasses in da wintertime even!
July 17th, 2008 at 9:01 am
btw, congrats to three ex-wahine, ah mow-santos, bown, and now willoughby for making the u.s. oly team. congrats to shoji and the program as well.
when did that ever happen?
in fact, berg is from punahou and tom's dad is an ex-islander. that makes five olympians on the same team with local roots.
awesome. make you feel proud to be hawaiian.

July 17th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Wreck,
I had to hit refresh quite a few times.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Is something going on with the website?
July 17th, 2008 at 10:55 am

July 17th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Wow! got a server busy message for that last hours!
July 17th, 2008 at 11:00 am
seriously, pride. would be an excellent color guy.
he is very knowledgeable, ex-warrior, has a wry sense of humor, knows the coaches, he would be a total package.
has great speaking voice.
and he n jim would love the post game kau kau together at big city.
he could also serenade us at half time.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:01 am

July 17th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Golfers Parker shot a -2 Wilson -5
July 17th, 2008 at 11:06 am
wow no believe I got through
Kazz - I would be greatly surprised if the DOE dropped the JV program but similar stupid idea have been done. My feeling is they going suspend it then bring it back which is ridiculous. I remember when they did away with frosh sports the JV program save their arses. No can see each public school with hundred of player on the fball team and additional player in the oddah sports like bball, scoccer, tennis etc...going get more grumbling cause parents going complain why their children not playing. much to much headache for the admin.
mid morning howzit again everybody
eh pride. you available this UH fball season to do color? Tsaiman this is my choice.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Dual football & volleyball players? Brings another picture in the mind of "kills"...
Thanks for the pics, ST!
RGM! Talk to us, guy!
July 17th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Al - I agree about Pride, plus the man has a voice like melted butter. If things start going bad...he could serenade us.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:07 am
ST 4 analyst!
July 17th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Finally got access to the blog!
Tried to google Kyle Mosely. Don't remember him at UH. When did he play?
July 17th, 2008 at 11:08 am
Hi midori...did your dad catch any fish today?
July 17th, 2008 at 11:12 am
sorry folks, I won't send a virus through the blog again...
Let's get a female football analyst. Someone like a Ronnie or jojo who know the game.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:13 am
d1 neva see your post till now but no can today.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:13 am
Gawl durnnit!!! I had such a great post written to put up just before the blog imploded, and now for the life of me I can't remember what the heck it was about.... Waydaminnit! I just remembered.
EXCELLENT NEWS ABOUT "GENTLEMAN" JIM LEAHEY!!! I can't imagine UH football without Big Daddy rockin that mic. As for a sidekick, Russ is good. They should also definitely consider our own prideperiod for that job. As anyone who has read pride's insightful commentary here can tell you, he would be great in that spot. (pride, if they read this and give you ther job, I get 25% off the top. If they don't, I never said anything)
Mr Leahey, if you are reading this, Sweety sez to tell ya that her conversation with you was the highlight of her evening. Glad to see you'll be back!
July 17th, 2008 at 11:14 am
congrats to Tasha Kai on the goal yesterday and defeating brazil, another local olympian
midori7 - 81-86, before you were born,
July 17th, 2008 at 11:15 am
57th!
July 17th, 2008 at 11:16 am
ST - what is your evaluation of Corey Nielsen? How's the accuracy, motion, strength, vision, footwork, quickness, release, and presence?
July 17th, 2008 at 11:16 am
"the"
July 17th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Hi Rob25!
Gotta check the website. They post pictures a day or 2 behind. He's eating REALLY good! Almost makes me wish I was there. But there's no way I could handle being on a boat for 8 hours!
Love the idea of pride working w/Jim Leahey
July 17th, 2008 at 11:20 am
Hi homey! Wass shakin lil friend? How do you like the blog's refresh rate today?
July 17th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Did all the blogs crash? I finally managed to see ST's new comment about Leahey and then see the bloggers' comments.
Same thing for the rest of you?

July 17th, 2008 at 11:27 am
Interesting about how Coach Zorn is trying to change Washington's current starting QB to be more like Colt!
July 17th, 2008 at 11:27 am
Lost my first post around 0930 when the blogs server went down. I'm at work today -- last scheduled work day in the almost-vacation which ends next week

July 17th, 2008 at 11:31 am

July 17th, 2008 at 11:38 am
homey -- I must have taken 25 minutes to type the entry because they were not there when I wrote...
But glad to see I'm not the only one who thought prideperiod would be great!
July 17th, 2008 at 11:38 am
Matt Wright was on Craig Stutzman's staff at SLS.
Very bright guy; personable.
Really likes coaching though so not sure he'd be interested in color work although I'm sure the Tsaikettes wouldn't mind watching him.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:39 am
Barry's surgery? Wonder what it's for.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:39 am
XLiz - I tell you! People can just chit-chat no matter what the method! I swear chawan must've emailed me at least 5 times today!

July 17th, 2008 at 11:48 am

July 17th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Liz,
haha, good one... was supposed to be funny, right?
July 17th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Did anyone notice the blog time and the actual time?
July 17th, 2008 at 11:51 am
homey - you so rascal...I doubt that you'll ever get smuud!
d1shima - Have to agree with you about the tekkies...but the first thing I thought about when blog seemed broken was that they were punishing ST for something.
Stretch - It makes sense the blog didn't work if ST was in charge...has he even started using the new camera yet? Also, I would like to get that big Tsaiko glass if you are ordering some more...love my shotglass! Let me know and I'll shoot a check to you.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:52 am

July 17th, 2008 at 11:56 am
DPK - Does anyone?
July 17th, 2008 at 11:59 am
Good Morning!
Aside from the server problem the other morning, (knock on wood) I have never experienced any problems accessing the WB blog. Koakane, I'm hopeful that I am "one of the 5%".
BG -
Your post #413 07/16 was one of your many beautifully composed expressions from the heart. I nod in agreement with every thought expressed, and yes...words I express each and every day...THANK YOU!! to all that serve in the military, in any capacity.
Rob25 -
Your post #416 in response to BG's also tugged at my heart. As the wife of an Army Reserve officer, I, too, was left to keep the home fires burning, care for the kids, and go to work, BUT it pales in comparison to what you are experiencing now. It is a whole different scenario with America at war on different fronts, and you having to send off not only your hubby, but also your son. I salute you and your family for shouldering the huge responsibilities of your loved ones serving in the military. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
Kelli -
Hope to meet you someday. I am curious to know how your parents chose to spell your name with an "i". Would be fun to share that story.
Koakane -
It is confusing, but "Kelli" is not "Midori". Coincidence that this unique spelling is the name of two posters on the blog. "Mike" is a common name, but "Kelli" is not. (No offense, Mike, the writer. Hi!)
Pauoa Boy -
I know it will be a fun day partying to celebrate your 2-year old's birthday. Very special! And also, THANK YOU for your service to our country. You are one of the few...the proud...a Marine!
July 17th, 2008 at 11:59 am
The A-house family sent me some photos from the Blog Party. Probably not the ones they sent to James and homey...
(hint, hint) ... but various shots of many people. I placed most of them on the party web page last night before I fell asleep. The page is at:
http://homepage.mac.com/smurashi/photos/blogbash4.html
The page is a long way from being completed. Does anyone have a better photo of Liz and Jason on stage?
July 17th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
homey,
You don't find UHFan808, UHFan808 finds YOU!
Oh wait...dat was somebody else.
Nevah mind.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
steveM - mahalo again on the info re. iphone. really help me config some stuff. learned a lot from you listings. if you find any more send it my way. you will love it when yours comes in.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
btw,
I keep hearing about the 36% drop in profits as a justification for the actions yesterday.
If a company makes $100 profit Q1 and then $64 profit Q2, dat's a 36% drop in profit.
But it's still a profit....
'nuff said.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
d1 - yep, profit is profit, maybe they using new kine math, gotta check with jason
July 17th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Jim Leahey -
If you're reading this...Hi! and how's your day going! First of all, I'm absolutely bonkers with delight that you have signed an agreement for one more year as K5's play-by-play announcer for UH sports. "Jim Leahey" is synonymous with "THE voice of UH Sports". If only Kanoa could be signed on as your color man, it would be so special...anyway,
Prideperiod would be an excellent choice as your color man. His speaking voice is as smooth as silk, and his commanding presence would definitely add enthusiasm and excitement to your broadcast. Best wishes as you embark on another year of excellent broadcasting!
July 17th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
You feel better now homey, kickin the fat ole unpopular shut in writer around?
July 17th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
hey, in DPK's defense, he HAS received emails -- from me! The last one was in December, inviting him to my home.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
steveM - mahalo again on the info re. iphone. really help me config some stuff. learned a lot from you listings. if you find any more send it my way. you will love it when yours comes in

July 17th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
*DPK returns from his mailbox after discovering nearly fifty BRAND NEW emails from fellow Tsaikos and realizes that homey hasn't had his lunch or his nap. That would explain the lil fellow's cantankerous behavior...*
July 17th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
hmmm, g-nalo may not like the group shot of him on SteveM's site. He told me he didn't want to be photographed.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
OK Stretch...doing it right now.
Mrs. A-House - Thank you for the kind words. So many are people are touched by the war and those that serve...I feel like we are all in this together. I never feel alone in this...thanks to everyone, especially my Tsaiko family.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
*DPK hugs gigi, tears streaming down his face and all over her muumuu. "Thanks gigi dahling, you can invite me over for your house 'rewarming' after the carpet and painting are finished."
BTW, chawan, thanks for the email!
July 17th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
Hey I would email DPK if I was privileged enough to have his address...I could grumble with him about homey picking on me...
Fortunately, homey has been nice to me lately.
WOW DPK gets invites to Gigi's home...lucky!
July 17th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
That's so sweet chawan!
DPK is emotional right now...awwww!
July 17th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
koakane™, midori7, Mrs. A-House: Sorry for confusing everyone. I just called my mom. She said she spelled my name with an "i" because "that's the modern way." Whatever that means. I've met people with the same name, but some spell it Kelly, Keli and Kellie. To each his/her own, I guess. A couple of people have actually thought my name was Kelli-Ann, but there it's just Kelli.
Haha, that was funny. Your blog host just walked by.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Al, thanks for the nominating my brother as Jim Leahey's football/color commentator. Also thanks to those who supprted that nomination. Below is a list of reasons for Pride not to be Leahey's football analyst.
All Pride would talk about would be the offensive line. That's all he cares about. A football analyst should be someone who cares about all aspects of the game.
Pride is a real Homer. He won't make any nice or positive comments about Hawaii's opponents. He'll just go on and on about how good the Warriors are, even if they're not playing well.
Liliha Bakery doesn't have any boxes big enough to put all of the donuts that will be required to keep Pride and Jim content during the broadcast.
The season is right around the corner, there isn't enough time to put in extra support beams under the press box
Talked to Pride...he doesn't like the idea of TV putting ten pounds on him. The viewers might get the wrong idea that he is fat and overweight.
Pride said that he doesn't like the idea of Homey out at the tailgate having a great time while he's up in the booth working
Pride is also the DS for Koakane. He's the designated speaker for Koakane when Koakane is too inebriated to be able to speak clearly
Pride said that he would recommend Mike Beasley. I'm too young to know who that is.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
chawan_cut e-mails dpk nearly 50 times!?!
Dat's LAME!
July 17th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Rob25 - you call it emotional I call it insecure.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
"Pride's Brother"? Yah right! At least ya know we believe in you big feller.
Rob, give me yur email and I will holla back. I would give you mine but I have to many enemies.

Hi Kelli!!! Thanks again for that tip in Manoa!
July 17th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

July 17th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
d1, thanks. That Woody looked so young back then. I didn't know he was musical.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
That was musical?
Willie Grace!

July 17th, 2008 at 12:51 pm

BTW there is a very large support group for “Victims of homey” that meets weekly at a local church. Email me for details.
haaaaa, too good.
July 17th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Not Delbert Tengan!!! Also, I don't like Urban Meyer so I hope the Warriors kick their their butts. Looks like Cory Neilson is a good one. I feel real good vibes about him. 35 touchdowns and 5 picks are impressive. He's a little undersized, but hopefully he'll grow some. A
QB named Todd Reesing at Kansas is small too, and he was darned good as a freshman last year. Thanks for alllowing me to vent.
July 17th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Pride’s bro….over the top funny
yep, but wasn't about to laugh first.
July 17th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Kelli -
nice article re: tobacco. whatcha think da problem is? is it centered more on da mom and pops or da bigger well-known stores? any insights??
July 17th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
All the blogs were down earlier today. When I called the HA Online Dept. shortly before 8:45 am, the woman who answered the phone said that I was the first to call.
Quiet day in some ways - wrapping up the final details for Saturday's Family Promise barbecue picnic. Doesn't look as if there'll be any special activities for teens & active adults although the young children and the 6 to 11 year old kids will have age-appropriate fun things to do.
Is there a unsupervised workout this afternoon? .
DrDoc needs some help, folks: He cannot fit the two recycling bins being donated to the Athletic Department in the car at the same time. Is there a Tsaiko out there who lives in Kailua or Waimanalo with a truck available who could help out so that he doesn't have to make two trips into town. Time frame: 7:45 am to 8:30 am any weekday which is not a holiday.
Off to town. Have a great day everyone.
July 17th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
g-nalo - Oh sure, when someone makes fun of me you are the first to laugh!
July 17th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
We need to get ahold of Jim Leahey and tell him that the perfect person for that football analyst job is a gentleman by the name of Michael Beazley. Michael's knowledge of the game is quite extensive. He played quarterback and linebacker while at the University of Hawaii. He also played on all of the special teams. He coached at Hawaii as a graduate assistant. He is knowledgable about all three phases of the game. He has spent a number of years coaching in high school on both sides of the ball, offense and defense. Michael is a ha'aha'a person with a great sense of humor, and a positive outlook. Mike is the type of person that when you're around him, you find yourself walking away with a genuine smile on your face and a bounce to your step. I think that Michael would be a great addition to Jim Leahey's broadcast team.

July 17th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
g-nalo - Oh sure, when someone makes fun of me you are the first to laugh!
not even, at times i may have laughed...........ok i laugh ALL the time...........but certainly not the first.
July 17th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Pride - Don't underestimate yourself...I walk away from you with a genuine smile and a peace of mind.
Can you sing for me?
homey - Huh? I can't go through that whole list!
July 17th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
btw - hi Rob25
July 17th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
I get that same feeling with the Tsaiko's too!
July 17th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
g-nalo - guess you gotta be quick to be the first one to laugh.
homey - Hey I had to share a grill with you, koakane, and pride...I know when to step aside. I haven't had a chance to even see DPK eat yet. So what are you trying to say?
DPK - sometimes Brew808 gives me just as hard a time as homey...I remember him always talking about my prok ribs! hahaha
July 17th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Hi there g-nalo...sorry I missed seeing you again at the Bash.
BTW You snuck out of Genji's without saying good bye...did homey scare you off?
July 17th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
There should be one requirement for the color man with Leahey - he should be a former UH player or coach. Jim Donovan, Dick Tomey were good cause they played or coached for UH. If not for UH, then at least have played or coached football on the college level. Yamanoho or Kekaula would be okay for play by play man. My two cents...
July 17th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Oh good, the blog is working, again.
July 17th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
oops, spoke too soon, it takes forever for the page to load

Doc - how big are the bins? I have a Highlander - do you think it would fit? Email me at jmor at hawaii dot edu.
July 17th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Rob25 - I'm not going to say anything because I don't want DPK to throw a hissy fit again.
July 17th, 2008 at 1:44 pm

July 17th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
DPK throws hissy fits? What is his arm strength...cause I think that is sometimes overrated...I like accuracy!
July 17th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
g-malo - my bad. Too much of homey isn't always a good things...bad habits rub off!
July 17th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Hi there g-nalo…sorry I missed seeing you again at the Bash.
BTW You snuck out of Genji’s without saying good bye…did homey scare you off?
no no, no, MY bad. i was playing "holding up the wall" at the bash.
as far as Genji's, yep was too "Koakane" so better i left early. Homey doesn't scare me but his pen does.................
July 17th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
*Rob25 sitting in a corner for timeout...her offense - pulling a homey*
July 17th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Speaking Football -
Glad to see we got some nice tall receivers with speed for the future, gotta make sure we work on hands and route running also like Sione, a little bit of bulking up would help as some of these guys are slim jims! Sione 6'5" Avery 6'5" Salas 6'2" Pollard 6'2" Lauduski 6'0" Lofton 6'3" Jasper 6'1" Stutzmann 6'1" Noa 6'2"
July 17th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Hi PB!
Happy Birthday to the young one...they are so much fun at that age!
Thank goodness I am done with the young children! So much more freedom now!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Classmate, you are on the right track. Just discuss one fave memory of your aunt and express gratitude from the family.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
RGM - Glad to see you back in the islands, heard rumors about the Buffalo Bills wanting to take a look, wassup with that? Anyway keep working my bruddah and good luck to you, just wish you and Davone woulda stayed one moa year...
July 17th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
PB
I like the size of the receivers but the ability to make catches and run routes properly impresses me more...all the height in the world isn't going to pay if you aren't in the right place and don't have good hands. Nice to have the height though.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
g-malo - my bad. Too much of homey isn’t always a good things…bad habits rub off!
haaa, no i'se just kidding Rob.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
dpc - When I spoke on behalf of my uncle I stuck to the thank you's since his life was relived through all the previous speakers. I just thanked those for being there in sharing their lives with that of my uncle and on behalf of the family (named his immediate family) we appreciate the kind words, sentiments, memories, thoughts, and graciousness that you have bestowed upon him...we feel so honored, thank you again for coming. Please share with us in some food and refreshments.
Of course, al, pride, XLiz and many others here can assist you also.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Howzit Aunty Rob25, Fun my eye, the terrible 2's already starting to show and it's only been one day so far. Nah, bebe had good fun this morning but tommorrow garrans he going nuts at LegoLand. Right now bruddah is sawing logs on his new Lightning McQueen CARS bed...dayum keed lol...
July 17th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
I gave something similar at my grandmother's funeral a while back and what I did was to improve it when the time came.
I never liked preparing a speech because I second guess myself too many times.
So I just went with what was on my mind at the time.
Short, sweet, and from da hhhaaaattt (heart) is always the most genuine.
Remember, it's a family affair and no one going judge you. The fact that you are going to say a "few words" is enough.
Sometimes the best way to honor someone is what is in our memories.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
PB - Hopefully, Avery gets a lot of reps catching the ball because he was dropping many passes in the spring. Other than that he has tremendous upside because he is very determined.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Rob25 - "pulling a homey"? Does that mean you drank too much CR?
First we had a "gigi"
then an "esme"
followed by a "jojo"...
July 17th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
homey, he's looking bettah! But I don't know where the 10 pounds he gained went!!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
RE: Receivers.
What's the word on PCHS alum Nate Nasca? Anyone seen him out there this summer?
But while I have not made it to any of the informal workouts, there is just a feeling in the air that the offense is coming together and the o-line is looking to prove the critics wrong.
Come Fall camp, I think we will be instore for a a lot of GOOD surprises!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Yups das why gotta get JUGS 2 in akshon with JUGS 1. Each of the incoming receivers have height and speed 4.4-4.5 guys but true if no moa hands than it's just wasted. Plus our offense all about timing so precision route running is also a big key. Da slim jims need to work out though cause another problem is them getting jammed by stronger DB's trying to get off the line.
Cannot wait to see Kealoha Pilares and Miah Ostrowski develop as I envision 2 stars in the making right there. Pilares I think will definitely flourish with the move to slot, his smooth running and agility is well suited for the position and I believe he will be an impact player for us!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
myki1! - That's good news! Now we gotta see how he does with those pads back on.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
what's a "gigi"?
July 17th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
thanx gigi, homey, kazz and any others for da great advice - it'll all be incorpoated. sorry to bog da blog down with non-football related posts but i thought here was where i'd get da bess replies.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
PB - Yep I remember you me and al agreeing about Pilares! With Washington's speed and quickness I think the receivers will cause havoc with the opposing DB's. Now we just gotta have that QB deliver the goods. The o-line to give the QB the time to deliver the goods. And finally the RB's to punish the defenders for trying to keep up with the o-line and the receivers.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
homey - Avery just needs to be in love with the JUGS machine and have confidence in catching the ball. He has time to develop and with his work ethic could be special down the line. But he need to invest in muscle milk and hit the weight room.
Remember when RGM first got to UH he also had some buttery hands but you would have never known as he's been so productive from working super hard.
Maybe need to go ol skool and practice Hawaiian style catching coconuts thrown at them. I garrans aftah a few catches they not going drop too many balls...
July 17th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
RE: Mike Washington.
Not sure if this was common knowledge, but one of my friends (Jarred from the blog party) mentioned to me a while back that Mike Washington was/is working out with Brian Clay on a regular basis.
Sure explains the kind of speed Washington has!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
homey ®: You're very welcome.
da princess' classmate: I don't have the details about exactly what kind of shops were more likely to sell tobacco illegally to minors. I didn't see them in the actual report on the DOH Web site either.
IMO, I think the problem is a combination of things — peer pressure, the need for more education and prevention programs, clerks need to be consistently checking IDs and ages, fake IDs, the need for harsher punishment for individuals and businesses who get caught, etc. Plus, some youth probably think it's cool to do stuff like that. The first step is knowing that this is happening though. What happens next is probably up to the state and DOH.
Pauoa Boy: Thanks. I like it, too.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
wow, i get back here and everyone wants me to email them. i feel so honored. so special. thanks!
gigi, sorry i haven't emailed you in awhile. homey was feeling a little lonely without the blog, he didn't know what to do...
anyone else want me to email them? or you can email me if you want. not sure why, but you can. chawan_cut at yahoo dot com i don't have the answers to life, money, love, pursuit of happiness, why the sky is blue, how the internet works, why the blog is so slow, etc, etc. but i can promise a lame reply. but lame isn't always good enough it seems.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Pauoa Boy,
Need to get all the QBs up in da coconut trees chucking coconuts at the WRs!!!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
PB - myki1 and sj-macro are the eyes of the blog when it comes to who's doing what at the practices. Lately, they've been slacking in their verbal reports...hehehehe.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Oye wait I forgot is football played with a pigskin or a coconut in Hawai'i?
Oops shnap, I think I mightv'e pulled a gigi???
July 17th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
ah so, gigi means asking dumb questions? figures.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
dpc - like Kazz said, just speak from the heart
homey - gotta add doing a "koakane" to the list, see #173
July 17th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Anyone got da 411 on the special teams?
July 17th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
From observations of the practices when I was home I would say the receivers need work running routes better and finding seems.
Kazz - the only one I think could make it up the tree is Funaki, kind of scary to see any of the other QB's try.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Aunty gigi - No it doesn't I just making trouble
July 17th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Forgot to mention, good to see the coach Mack getting a very early start in offering schollies. Like a poster mentioned, would be good to get a stud running back too!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
My nominations for K5 Color person regardless of contractual obligations and my reasons:
1. Andy Bumatai-A new direction and should come cheap. What else is he doing now on K5?
2. Larry Price-Former coach and already has experience doing the same things for high school sports.
3. Stephanie Lum--Add some hottness to the home team. Plus she already works for KHNL 8. Watch PPV orders skyrocket.
4. Chris Hart--I think he's better than Bobby and not so much of a Homer. Nuff said.
5. Artie Wilson--Chemistry would not be a problem and I'm sure he has the knowledge.
6. Scott Robbs--If College World Series champion Fresno State hired him on the fly then why can K5? I liked the Sports Bar when it was on and has demonstrated enthusiasm and knowledge with his volleyball coverage.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
gigi = hamstring?
Loa - okay, thanks. koakane is now on the list.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Corey must be a special one to lead the whole state in passing as a junior. love the shirt and especially the ironman headband. maybe he growing out the lockes for next year
July 17th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
re: Scott Robbs
wow i must've been outta da loop. FSU hired him to do their CWS games? didn't they have their own radio guy? that must've been a gr8 experience for him. kudos to him
July 17th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Kazz - Dunno about special teams but my top candidates for KR/PR would be:
Michael Washington - 4.1-4.2 speed needs to be on the field returning
Ryan Mouton - I would rather him just stay at DB an not risk injury but
too much speed and talent not to be returning
Malcom Lane - Has a knack for gaining big yards great breakaway speed
Dustin Blount - Heard has speed and big play ability
Jovonte Taylor - Averaged 29.2 yards per return and 2 KR touchdowns
July 17th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
no, a gigi is not asking dumb questions, it's when just the questions.....
July 17th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
myki - i found one 56, just gotta figure out how to get it to Doris
July 17th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
What do I Think?
Ok, U asked.
A personalty ( Jim Leahey is already colorful enough) that can fit with Papa Leahey.) Let's be honest, THEY need to adjust to pops.
There are so many possibilties on Oahu ( or perhaps outer island), why limit to only a few.
Augie T. Yes
Who is the Big Kahuna on Oahu radio. Used to be on Kong Radio on Kauai, then went Big island, then back to Oahu. The bugga is good.
Liz - Who da guy?
I nominate him or Augie T.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
dpc - i think Scott used to do minor league bb in vegas, i liked his show in the afternoons before they changed the format
hey jojo!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
BB -
Your nomination for Andy Bumutai would sell some shiney coin for the Telecom broadcasts.
Good one.
July 17th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Hey gang...whew...hectic day...only eating lunch now....busy busy...blog was down eh?? no wonder posts are down...LMAO
Good to hear that Papa Leahey's contract was renewed. Now, just have to find someone to mesh with the grandmaster...
July 17th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
oh, man, got so many problems. Just had my drapes cleaned. Before they returned, I noticed all kinds of lizard crapola under the windows and on the walls.
Any ideas on how to clean the crap? Or, should we just paint over it?
July 17th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Let's hook up Vili with a wireless mic and he can do color commentary from the field!!!!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Hey gang…whew…hectic day…only eating lunch now….busy busy…
you took lunch break at 12:00 pm and only eating now, "power lunch"?
hows 'heaven' James?
July 17th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
bb,
Larry Price?
July 17th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
PB - i think Mouton would be a great punt returner, i remember his int td runback last year, think was against unlv
July 17th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Kazz,
I like it!
Throw in one "headband cam" fo' da live action shot wen he chasing down da oddah mascots!
heheheh
July 17th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
gigi - Never paint over crap. Sand it off. You sure it's lizard crap?
July 17th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
G-nalo..."Heaven isn't too far away...Closer to it everyday...No matter what my friends try and sayyyyeee...."
Actually, only eating lunch now...had to make it light since dinner is just around the corner...MWAHAHHA
July 17th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Hmmm...
Pops on board for only another year???
While all good things must come to an end eventually, there is just NO WAY I can imagine anyone else calling UH sports.
I practically grew up with the man's voice from the time I was 5 watching UH Rainbow Baseball games with my grandpa and he'd fall asleep, Jim Leahey's voice was the only "presence" in the room during that time.
BTW, who else would have made that ALL-TIME great call when Tes Whitlock made that 3-pt buzzerbeater to beat BYU???
"OOHHHHHH, OHHHHH, DO YOU BELIEVE IT!!!"
July 17th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
D1,
HA! Jim Leahey would never be able to get a word in!!!
July 17th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
since colt got here, jj wasn't into too much going after the punt or even setting up too much of a return. this'll be da 1st year since da chad owens era that we can get excited about da punt return team. whose got da quicks for dis position. quickness more important den speed for dis return whereas speed more important on da KO returns. MW and Mouton might be perfect candidates for both but do you risk injury, especially for Mouton's case where there might not be 2 much depth at da corner positon
July 17th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Andy Bumatai would be a disastrous choice. His late night show is not even funny. In fact, it's painful to watch.
Larry Price?!? - are u kidding?
Stephanie Lum - Hell no!! L-A-M-E. The only choice worse than her would be Shari Shima the queen of lame.
Chris Hart? - no, no, and NO.
Artie Wilson - A possibility, but should just stick to basketball.
Scott Robbs - Not a bad choice. Good voice, good personality.
The hands down choice (if it's a possibility) should be Russell Yamanoha. Good knowledge, good commentary, good personality.

Yep. Notice that it was down for TWO hours.
After hour #1
Tekkie #1: D4mn! We missed it.
Tekkie #2: It's OK, we just gotta wait about another hour til it comes around again!

I'm just going to say this once, "yup".
July 17th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Watched some old clips of UH "Rainbows" football. Didn't know Bobby Curran used to do KHNL coverage of the games.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
DPC,
That moment is the greatest single highlight in Hawaii sports history.

Question_
When considering a commentator for K-5 . Does Internet bring in more customers from the mainland, and international than island wide K-5 Television.
If so, then consider adapting a commentator that outside listeners can relate to.
Just my 3 1/2 cents opinion. Tomorrow will drop to less than a penny with the occuring economy slide.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
d1shima - The tekkies were laid off. The time setters was ST and bro Mike.

Andy Bumatai would be a disastrous choice. His late night show is not even funny. In fact, it’s painful to watch.
I’m just going to say this once, “yup”.
"yup" for me
July 17th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
homey,
Pah-dum. Tshhh!
July 17th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
J-Dog,
Really? Shoot neither did I.
But Bobby Curran is really good at calling the action on the radio. He and RK got me through the angst of having to listen to the San Jose State game from last season while at my desk at work and then in my car for the miracle OT play.
I can see him possibly taking the UH commentator spot once Papa Leahey is ready to hang up his headset.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Too bad Rob Demello is not available either.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Kazz/dpc...
or the call when Walter Murray drops the pass in the end-zone for the win on the last play of the game against BYU...."OHHHH THE HUMANITY!!!!"
July 17th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
If Pride is to bashful to face his destiny, ( his "Pride's Brother "post above is all the proof we need to see he'd be perfect ) I say let it be Russell. There are lots of other quality choices mentined above, some not so quality too.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Another favorite Leahey-ism: "UN-BEEEE-LEEEEEEAVE-ABLE!!!"
July 17th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Since we are tossing out Hawaii sports personalities in the media...
What's Reid Shimizu's status on KHNL?
The last time I saw him was at the Spring game, but I wasn't able to ask him what he was up to. He obviously was still working for them as he was carrying a camera and a mic with him.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
talking bout HI sports history: who eventually won that contest on da L & L radio show greatest moment in HI sports history - Michael Mamea vs D Kelly. been meaning to find that one out for a while. can't go wrong with either choice. both facing da adversity, 2 great calls brent musberger and sean mcdonough (sp?)
July 17th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Quadruple "yup" for me on Andy...he should stick to his comedy routines....
Larry Price - The guy can only say "Katoosh"...well, at least that's what I gather from my limited experience listening to him call high school games on OC16.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
kazz
saw Reid shimizu's name on da credits for last nite's BJ Penn special on channel 2, maybe he's there now
July 17th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Loa - I agree about Mouton but would like to see him on the field permanentely locking down opposing WR's. I think the two JC guys coming in Blount and Taylor are experienced returners with natural speed and quicks. Washington should have been returning a long time ago, sucks that JJ had his favorites...
#227 - That's what killed UH in a couple games in the past...Special Teams Play. People don't realize how important Special Teams is, and I too felt like we put so much focus on our offense that special teams got overlooked and not focused on enough. Too many close games that should have been a W but ended in a L because special teams screwed up. We know we have the guys who can run in open space but blocking is key. On the other end our coverage team got there arses kicked numerous times...and need to learn angle pursuits and not just running down field and blowing guys up all the time.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
MY cousin Russel Shimooka woyld be a very good football analyst. He was the voice of the 49'ers back in the late 80's. Honest.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Another Leahey classic (more of recent memory):
Versus Purdue 2006
Jim Leahey calling the interception Adam Leonard secured to seal the victory for UH with 34 seconds left in the game:
"do you know what this crowd is saying??? they're saying, 'excuse me while I kiss the sky' "
Pops quoted a Hendrix lyric...
July 17th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Thankfully the rules leave Joe "I only call um Rainbows" Moore out of the equation.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

that's why it's 1/3 important to each O D and ST. If you muck up anyone of them, you'll find yourself asking why or what did we do wrong at the end of the day
July 17th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
K.K. Kaumanua (Kent Bowman) would have been my choice. Remember when he used to do the news on the radio?...Ha! What a scream...Never heard a more exciting account of a bank robbery in my life!
His "3 little pigs" recording was my grandkids all time fave!
July 17th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Russell Shimooka would have a hard time pronouncing Polynesian names.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
DPC,
Da Little League thing won...
D1,
Reid Shimizu is a talented person to have on staff for any news program. I wish nothing but success for him.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Larry Price is one banana, I think he had too many Katooshes in his time
Andy Bumatai sometimes tries a little too hard and comes out garbage
I no think anyone can replace Papa Leahey...
Did someone mention Vili??? Um I konna tekka rain sheck on dat...
July 17th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
My real reasons....
1. Andy Bumatai-A new direction and should come cheap. What else is he doing now on K5? (His show is beyond horrible but K5 could pay him 20 bucks a game and spend the leftovers on getting HDTV)
2. Larry Price-Former coach and already has experience doing the same things for high school sports. (I wish OC16 would get rid of him the OIA kids deserve better)
3. Stephanie Lum–Add some hottness to the home team. Plus she already works for KHNL 8. Watch PPV orders skyrocket. (She may be lame but she is Hot)
4. Chris Hart–I think he’s better than Bobby and not so much of a Homer. Nuff said. (I could have said Gary Dickman)
5. Artie Wilson–Chemistry would not be a problem and I’m sure he has the knowledge. (I would like to see if he could actually do it. He has the athletic background and the sports knowledge)
6. Scott Robbs–If College World Series champion Fresno State hired him on the fly then why can K5? I liked the Sports Bar when it was on and has demonstrated enthusiasm and knowledge with his volleyball coverage. (This would have to be my one and only serious choice)
6a. Russell Yamanoha--He's a safe safe choice. Can't go wrong with him.
Other names that came to mind
7. Alika Smith--I heard him doing a mock play by play at a clinic. Sounded legit.
8. Kevin Hashiro--what is he doing now?
9. John Madden--might as well aim high
10. Dog Chapman--That would be funny as heck. There would be a pregame and postgame prayer. He would come off as harsh but then have forgiveness for every turnover and bad play.
11. Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, and Brad Nessler--They have called every single UH Football game that I have played for the past 3-4 years. Corso is smart too because he can recommend the most effective plays but his choices did not work for me against Florida on Heisman level.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
PB...gotta agree with you on special teams play. I think the focus this year is gonna be different. All facets of the game will get looked at and improvements will be made, especially on special teams. All they have to remember is Boise State in 2006....
July 17th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Oops, I mean to reply to DPC regarding Reid Shimizu and not D1.
GET TOO MANY DA KINE "D's" OVA HEA!!!
July 17th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
J-Dog - didn't Russell Shimooka have a hard time pronouncing his own last name?
July 17th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Reid Shimizu is Ron Mizutani's cameraman. When Ron has a story, Reid is holding the camera.

Big Hi! to you. Thanks for being a great sport and allowing me to take your picture. Stretchette, J!t$ and Sleez were good sports, too. Your presence at the blog bash made it more complete and memorable! Midori helped me select what pictures to send SteveM, and your group picture and the one with Kazz, Jarred and Tyler showed "game-ready" faces. All of you guys are very lovable! In the midst of fun and frivolity, your faces reflect power and focus... "take care of business, Warriors...JUST DO IT!!"
chawan_cut -
Don't hesitate to e-mail me anytime. I wouldn't feel left out, except when I read that you e-mailed DPK fifty (50) times??! If he didn't respond to you, I definitely will.

Jim Ross from wwe--he has a football background. Probably would rip apart the Polynesian names.

PB, you hit the nail right on my baby toe!...I've been saying this for years, and it is finally becoming such an important part of the Warrior Scheme. Besides the importance of Special Teams play, the pros will testify to football being all about the angle of pursuit. It is a real science, right Jason? "nuff sed!"
July 17th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Kazz - I think I can out run the Samoan Sackman, nah nah okay okay I take it back, I was only joke, tek it easeh tai-kah
July 17th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
John Madden?
I can see it now:
Jim Leahey: "What are Hawaii's keys to success for this game"
Madden: "Well I really believe that whoever can end up with the most points at the end of the game will have a good chance of winning. Just like anyone would have a winner's chance of beating athlete's foot with BOOM... TOUGH ACTIN' TINACTIN"
Jim Leahey: "I quit".
July 17th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
'yup' from me for Andy...
Larry Price...are you kidding me? He can't even say the names of many local athletes correctly and he slurs everything that he says. Doesn't he have some health issues also?
I'm not a big fan of Russell's, but at least he has an opion.
Nope, I still like Pride no matter what his bro says.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
LMAO yeah I believe so.

No Sooner-lover should ever call a football game this far WEST.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Hey...don't pick on Russell. He was a Rainbow Cheerleader back in the day.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Shimooka...not Yamanoha
July 17th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Hi Mrs. A-House...why did you call me a muffin in one of your posts yesterday??? Did I look like the Punchbowl...I mean Pillsbury Dough Boy?? MWAHAHHAHAHAHA
July 17th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Dog Chapman? Seriously?
THERE IS NO SMOKING ALLOWED IN THE PRESS BOX!!!
July 17th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Madden is out.........you cannot drive a bus to Hawaii
July 17th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
BB,
1. There won't be anyone left watching K5 in HD.
2. So they should take someone that you think is not good for high school sports?
3. How many times to they actually cut the camera to inside the booth? I hope the 5min pregame is worth the PPV fees.
4. Chris Hart is a joke. (but I have to agree with your Gary Dickman comment)
July 17th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Mrs. A-House ~ I didn't get to tell you that I loved your wardrobe accessory...the Rambo Rag on your head was an awesome display of power!
No woman of the islands should be without that kind of visible show of force. We are your humble servants Mrs. A-House...by the way, can I borrow a 20 until payday...I like go movies wid the gang?
July 17th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Rob25,
When you said "Russell" did you mean Russell Yamanoha?
I too tend to agree with his opinions on a lot of things.
I get a kick on his philosophy on JJ at SMU and "wishing JJ the best there".
July 17th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Anywho, this is a moot point because I'm a season ticket holder.
Good luck PPV people!
July 17th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

July 17th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
ST,
We're you able to get RGM to say "YEAAAHHH" and "OHHHH-KAY" while posing for that photo?
Did he have a very gaudy and shiny goblet in one hand as well?
July 17th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
PB...training that Tsaiko early eh??
July 17th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Kazz -
#269 - I love John Madden, but your impersonation (in words) of him was so perfect! Add this one to your repertoire of funny stories/jokes. With your quick wit and ad lib abilities...I nominate KAZZ for color man!!
James -
In romantic circles you may be described as "muffin", but in a man-ly macho-dripping environment like the blog bash, DO NOT separate the word "muffin" from "STUD!" Compliments don't come frequently on this blog, so take 'em when you get 'em.
Testing . . .

July 17th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
J-Dog,
This is true but we all still watch the replays the following morning!
BTW, are your seats in the North End Zone?
Section UU, Orange Level, somewhere between rows 1-21?
July 17th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
(Jesse) James - yups first thing he look for is the cake and ice cream while still in a daze, crack me up...
Plus they in training to one day play for the Home Team...
July 17th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Mrs. A-House,
I have to thank John Madden for making it so easy to do so!!!
But no way can I ever do color. I freeze up around Jim Leahey.
Jim Leahey Fact:
Jim Leahey can slam a revolving door shut.
I'm sorry but I no mo da kine mana fo be in his presence.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Sorry, meant to say opinion.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
If James were to be a muffin what would he be?
Blueberry, White Chocolate Macadamia, Poppy Seed, or Banana NAAAHHHTZZZ?
July 17th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
If he were eligible, I'd go with Kekaula. Yamanoha would be good, though.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Kazz:
thanks for the laughs! Madden & Summerall - my favorite broadcast team.
Pauoa Boy:
Happy Birthday to your little one! Ask him if he can save some cake & ice cream for aunty, kay?!

Funny you should say that Kazz. My nephew wanted to meet Papa L at the bash. When I finally dragged him over to introduce, he told Jim that he was not "worthy!"
What broke the ice was when I told him to play his 'ringtone' for Jim to give a listen. Pops cracked up at his own recording of a run back for a TD in that very familiar high-pitched, and very excited voice we all know and love.
I'm all for Pride being at his side. Let's put him on the ballot. (Not balut Homey!).
July 17th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Kekoa -
We retired annuitants got to stick together...of course I will be happy to pay for your movie ticket, and I'll throw in a large popcorn, hot dog, large drink, box of raisinettes and whoppers (my favorites). Just say wen...
Thanks for the props. My "rambo" gear secured the sweat to the top of my head. It was definitely survival gear. Couldn't take the chance of screwing up my speech by introducing Jim Leahey as Homey Respicio or some other "special" guest.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Kazz - I was talking about Yamanoha. Sometimes he is a little negative...I don't want homers, but I don't want to listen to a pessimist either. Like that he isn't afraid to express his opinions.
Loved the Madden conversation...yup I could see Papa Leahey walking out after hearing that.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Probably being a homer but i'd go with kekaula as a radio "color guy" against pretty much any national guy out there. bruddah is amazing - just sees stuff normal peeps don't see
July 17th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
I think Jason has a crush on someone.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
K-den...signing off.
Thanks to everybody for another FUN DAY! At the end of each day, I give thanks to Stephen Tsai for creating this awesome WB Blog. So ST, to you and your wonderful family...enjoy a relaxing evening and I'll "see" you tomorrow.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Nope. We're in NN, Blue.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
why not have curran come do tv and kekaula can take over the radio waves?
and his sidekick could be kanoa.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Rob25,
I wouldn't say that Yamanoha is a pessimist, but he can get a little down on things we want to be positive about, but ONE thing is fo shua about Yamanoha... no matter what he may say from time to time, we know his dedication to the UH program... unlike some people with BIG question marks on Hawaii sports radio... but I won't get into that....
Kekoa,
Wasn't it chicken skin to have the living icon, Mr. Jim Leahey address us bloggers in person?
I had two of my friends there and they still couldn't believe who they heard speak that wonderful evening, (Pops, JD, Chancellor Hinshaw, Coach Mac, ST). They still talk about the experience to this day.
"It's like a VIP party" as they said that night.

da princess' classmate,
Re: # 170
For a closer, you could use this, which I remembered from a card (sorry, can't remember if it was Hallmark or what).
"Goodbyes are not forever. Goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean I'll miss you; until we meet again!"
July 17th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Kazz,
No shame in giving J.P. a gut shot.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
I always liked the way Kevin Hashiro did broadcasts, I think that he would a greatr choice to work with Papa Leahey
July 17th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
J-Dog,
Oh. Just trying to figga out... I remember a while back you said you are also PCHS C/O 2000, but still remaining undahcovah...
I saw a former Charger and his "cliq" sitting in the aforemention section who's first name starts with a "J" so I thought I'd play "process of elimination".
July 17th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
mrs. ahouse. i,i, have to tell you some of us were having fun on the email circuit while the blog was down. please ask why midori chan excluded some of you.
mmmmppphhhhhhhh!
July 17th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
I remember Kevin Hashiro had to call a few Wahine games via his CELLPHONE because something went wrong at KKEA...
Hope they paid him back for the airtime usage!
July 17th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Thanks for the props. My “rambo” gear secured the sweat to the top of my head. It was definitely survival gear. Couldn’t take the chance of screwing up my speech by introducing Jim Leahey as Homey Respicio or some other “special” guest.
"Homey Respicio", haaaaaa
July 17th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Finally...my cable/internet service was down all day. Just got it back a few minutes ago.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
KAZZ
I know what you mean about dedication. I would love to see Kekaula as color, but then again...he's not in the running.
I don't have a problem with Russ, not sure about Scott, like Kevin Hashiro, but he got very excited doing basketball games...I would be telling him to calm down through the radio. Can you just imagine something big and both of them trying to describe it?
July 17th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
any of the russell's would be at the bottom of my list. one is monotone, mundane, and keeps repeating his cliche's week after week. the other just doesn't have a clue let alone able to pronounce the surnames.
so its back to pride.
okay, he may be shy. so my second choice would be jeff ulbrich. actually, anyone ever thought about jesse sapolu?
July 17th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
hi rob25......did you answer my question about you guys being in the marines???
July 17th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
I don't know if I shared this before BUT here's a story that adds to the MYTH of Jim Leahey:
A friend of mine was sent to drop off an item Jim Leahey personally requested. He went to Les Murakami Stadium to drop it off.
Upon approaching the gate he told the usher "I have this for Jim Leahey". Without hesitation or question the usher everso urgently escorted my friend to press box.
When he knocked on the door and entered, everyone was silent and Jim Leahey was in the middle of it all and they were all just looking at my friend. In what my friend describes as a Mafia-esque atmosphere, Jim Leahey aka The Godfather motions for my friend to enter... Nobody else ever says a word.
Then the only words uttered by Jim Leahey to my friend when he was given the item, was "Tell your dad I appreciate this" in his classic stoic voice.
My friend to this day, says that Jim Leahey is the most intimidating figure in all of Hawaii sports media, or maybe Hawaii in general.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Ever seen Jim Leahey in public? Man da bugga get one foul mouth hahaha.
He also used to umpire some of my Pony league baseball games. Not sure if he still does.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
No denying, Mr. Leahey is the voice of Warrior Football; however, his choice of 'big' words leaves me scratching my head sometimes. I even get da urge fo get da thesaurus during da game! Guess it's just part of his whole show. Gotta love 'um!
IMHO, Dick Tomey was da' bestest color commentator - he definitely knew his stuff And he showed the love to Hawaii. JD was good too.
Hope we get a good one this year. Go Warriors!!!! Bring da' Hurt, Defense!!!
July 17th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Kazz,
How's you trying to be detective and all hahaha. My last initial starts with a T. Das all I goin say on here.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Hi Al! Yes I did yesterday. I pasted for you.
Rob25:
July 16th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Al - My hubby was a Marine and is now AD with the Hawaii National Guard. When he left for DS/DS he was stationed at Kaneohe. After he came back we were still living at K Bay but he was with Marine Barracks until they sent us to Okinawa for 4.5 years. He got out and we came home and now he is again full time with the National Guard.
Now our oldest is following in his Dad’s footsteps, but hopefully not to Iraq or Afghanistan…but he is ready and willing to serve and die for this country if need be. Have to take our hats off to people who feel the call to sacrifice like that.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
J-Dog,
Nevamine.. I geeev up...
But I think I do remember L&L talking about how they did umpire those games, but I think Kanoa Leahey is the only one still doing it.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
SAPOLU "yes"
July 17th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
rob25....small world i was at mcbh during those tours. one day we talk story perhaps we ran into each other.
maybe at a cattle call. bring the old man too.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Wow gots lots of work and blogging done today...that's production.
Hope the traffic isn't too bad as I head home.
Might as well shoot for the stars and get Neil Everett back here to do the color.
But my man Pride is still a good choice...and did I mention that he can sing? Nothing like a man that can sing! (OK ST does sing, but somehow it doesn't have the same effect!?)
July 17th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
papa jim told me thursday he don't umpire anymore.
did i tell you he almost tossed me out of game. hahaha. a pinto game. hahahaha. of course we were only playing around.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
definition of pales in comparison
July 17th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Al - We were stationed at Kaneohe from 1989 until 1993 then Okinawa through 1998 when we returned to Hawaii. He was with the Third Marine Regiment. I used to volunteer at the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society while he was away...it helped me to maintain some sanity. Lucky for me that we were from Hawaii, so I also had the support of my family.
Yes, we will have to talk...hubby probably won't be able to make it anytime soon because they are starting their second Annual Training Exercise before they ship out to Fort Hood. Can't believe all the changes they have made to Kaneohe since we left...they even tore down the house that we lived in!!!
July 17th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
ok....rob25 it should be interesting.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
Good evening, Tsaiko-Nation.
Finally got back home. Boy, catching up two days worth of comments sure is a load.
What is this I hear? 54 people got laid off at the Advertiser, is that true?

PB & Kekoa,
I agree we need to work on Special Teams. When watching the games this past season, I thot Special Teams was the weakest area of UH play.
PB, Happy berfday to the 2 year old! Enjoy em now while they are small & cute.

Howzit FT, must be a real nail biter sitting around in the Florida sun waiting for the 'game.' Anything new in the local sports section regarding the preparation for the coming of the Warrior tribe?
The bigger battle will be the entire admin section containing BHF2 if their ticket office doesn't cough up his tickets! It'll be like a category V hurricane force blowing thru the Swamp!!
July 17th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
Hiya- quick esme...
Ronnie would be a good match for Papa Leahey. She has the analytical mind, knowledge of history and eye for technical details and execution that would compliment Papa's style. Inotherwords- she would make a great, knowlegeable straight man to keep a balanced rhythm to underscore Papa's accented outbursts and exclamations.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
Say ...
A gentle reminder that posters are not permitted to write — even in a joking manner — about wanting to blow up things, particularly the news building.
While the managers may not acknowledge much — we're still waiting for the "nice job" on the anniversary and proclamation — they do take notice of physical harm to places where they work.
Thanks.
We may resume griping about the slow blog today.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Awesome, ST!
OK Adam Leonard!!!
July 17th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Good afternoon/evening Tsai-kos!
Re commentators: Shimooka, Price, Hart, Bumatai, Robbs, Yamanoha - Never, no way, not in my lifetime, are you joking, has possibilities, YES!!
Got that?
Can't believe they're actually thinking about cutting JV programs. Unbelievable. That it would actually cross someone's mind is mind-blowing.
OK off to din-din. Ramen!! See you latas.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Cya Tsaikos!
Might check in later.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Hi, Tsai-Meister.
Any comment on my entry # 327 ?
Hi, Kekoa.
Man, can't wait for fall camp and the game. The USF is bragging that they have sold 24,500 season tickets, a new record for them, claiming that they are in the big time (St.Petersburg Times headline). Does that mean that Hawaii is in the big time? lol.
Nobody around here is taking the Warriors seriously, they all think that we are seriously rebuilding and have lost all our good guys. Good for us, little do they know, little do they know.......
July 17th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Yep.
54 good folks were fired yesterday, including some who have worked for the company for three decades.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
midori7, No worry sis get planny leftover...not for long though haha...buggah is onolicious. Got him one Lightning McQueen Oreo Cookie Ice Cream Cake with chocolate fudge in the middle, verry verry yummy.
MeiLing, Howzit one of my bestest friends is name MeiLing. Mahalos for the B-Day wishes and eventhough he small and cute buggah is rascal, like give' em lickens but cannot cause he make me laugh when he give me the "what you trying for spank me brah look" too funny.
Yups, special teams just gotta be disciplined on both ends and not get caught up trying to make the big hit but instead work together to cut off the running lanes and make the sure tackle and keep the opposing O in the 20...
July 17th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
Okay I never thought someone would be mento enough to even think of cutting out JV sports in high school. What the heo is this world coming to nowadays...definitely mind blowing, no can believe dis crap...
July 17th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
Awesome!!! ST keeps on giving da people what they want!!!
Adam Leonard certainly is a chatty fellow huh?
This makes for his second appearance this year I believe.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
how is sis ? we are all concerned
July 17th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Aww shnap Adam Leonard tommorrow @ 1 p.m. Dang I'm going to be at LegoLand...
Oh wells, all I gotta say bruddah Adam is thanks for bringing the Gatorade to practice. Nah, but good luck this season and lets show the Gators what a Top 25 defense is all about! Also, can you do me a favor and put that uh Tebow guy on his arse a few times, would greatly appreciate it! Oh and my question for you would be... So how does it feel knowing that you and the rest of our Top 25 Defense will keep Florida from scoring period?
July 17th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Wow on a rock-
that's an absolutely great line. actually sounds like something hallmark would write. thanks bro. that one might choke me up when i'm trying to say it but i'll definitely put it in my speech
July 17th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Pauoa Boy,
I'll go ahead and cut and paste this:
I'll forward it as a comment to Adam Leonard tomorrow on you behalf if you want and you can check the blog tomorrow for his response.

Tsai-Meister,
That truly sucks, I guess loyalty is no longer a value in the corporate world or elsewhere. That is a change in our socalled modern world I really dislike.

The new guys are willing to chat. But UH put the muzzle on pre-training-camp chats for the newbies.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Curveball,
Thanks for your concern, and thanks to all who have shared their good wishes during our sister's recent crisis. She's home today and we're crossing our fingers for her recovery, no matter how long it may take. We'd prefer not to get into details, but ST and I greatly appreciate your positive thoughts and prayers.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
And, what, no nominations for the Princess? Anyone remember her UH soccer broadcasts?
July 17th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Good evening all!
Mike/ST: that is good news on your sis..will still keep her in our prayers...
July 17th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
Kazz - shutes appreciate it...
Dang did my post get SMU'd for being to vulgar, I sorry...
July 17th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Stephen,
Will the Princess at least be allowed to host the chat guests again? Or is that not allowed either?
I promise to behave and not be lame anymore.
I could've easily said somehting in response to Mike's post #349.
ST & MT, our prayers our with sister Tsai.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

ST & MT, our prayers are with sister Tsai.

July 17th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
I hope papa Leahey doesn't make any more glaring errors, calling players by wrong names! Irritating.
Kanoa, on the other hand, is great. But if he were color man (which he cannot be), he would probably monopolize the conversation. lol
July 17th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Just back from our neighborhood watch with Officer Pacheco of the Kapolei Police Station.
It was a very fruitful session on the road tonite. He did manage to make one arrest for speeding, reckless driving with our assistance. As far as a deterrant, our little army is pretty rugged.
Diana refused to wear her bright yellow T-shirt because she said the color did not match her ensemble. She chose to go "undercover" instead. The bad guys are in a heap of trouble already with her on patrol.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
If you are wondering when Oceanic will send out notices re renewals for PPV, hubby called and they told him the notices would be mailed on July 17.
But we don't need to wait for them; we can just call and order over the phone and they will put the charge on the next bill.
$380 for renewal.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
gigi
380 for renewal for what
July 17th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
renewal for Pay Per View of the football games, certain wahine VB games, and certain men's basketball games.
July 17th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Hello Tsaikos everywhere.

thank your lucky stars!!!!!

July 17th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Aloha everybody
Looks like the coaches going for broke now. Nice to see braddah Tony Tuioti back in the saddle and my choice to do color is braddah Larry Beil. If that doesn't work then Pride would be a very good choice.

ST ~ Never one to stir up trouble, but these HA management people got me riled over their total disrespect for their own employees. These bosses are the kind of people who have no soul and should be ashamed of their actions.
You and the other bloggers know that I mean no physical harm to anyone, but apparently they do pay attention to your blog enough to pick up on my displeasure. It was silly of them to think otherwize.
E kala mai Stephen, it bothered me that they had no appreciation of your accomplishments in furthering the popularity of their newspaper. They had no respect for the quality work Leila Wai provides. I hope that they understand that I want them to negotiate a fair settlement to your dispute, period.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
With all of the pressure from both management and the union, I decided I'm going to take a two-day break from this blog.
Call it a work stoppage, or a blog strike, or whatever.
And I'm going at it alone on this one, because, well, we remember what happened the last time.
If you need to reach me, call me at 525-8051 or e-mail sstsai@hawaii.edu.
If you need my personal cell, e-mail me, and I'll send it to you.
Thanks.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
that is fair enough. after all you have been at it 24/7 for two years now. don't you only get paid for five days per week anyway.
i'll take a cue from this and take a "self imposed" two day moratorium.....er, break from this stuff too.
anyone want to join in....no shame.
...nuff said.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:29 pm

hmmm. Does anyone else see the irony here?
"Lending a helping hand to those struggling for a better life
A new initiative by Helping Hands Hawai'i, The Honolulu Advertiser and KGMB not only raises money to help pay the bills of recently laid-off workers but also raises awareness of the plight of people too embarrassed to ask for help. "
