Scott Smith derby

July 25th, 2008
By Stephen Tsai

Scott Smith, a defensive end from Saint Louis School, received a limited release from his California football scholarship, according to his father, George Smith.

Smith may have contact with Arizona, Arizona State and Oregon. It is a curious move because those three schools and California are members of the Pac-10 Conference.

Without a release, Smith is not allowed to contact UH, which is a member of the Western Athletic Conference. UH also has a policy in which transferring students must be enrolled in the fall semester by July 1, although that deadline can be extended on a case-by-case basis.

Smith is expected to visit Oregon soon. The Ducks first offered him a scholarship when he was a high school junior.

With a release, Smith is allowed to accept a football scholarship this academic year. Without one, he may join a school only as a walk-on this year.

Smith redshirted as a freshman last season. In accordance with NCAA transfer rules, he also would have to redshirt this season.

    First?

  3. Jason:

    Rats, just got beat.

Wait, so schools can negotiate the terms of a release? Am I understanding that right? And if so, then why the heck would they prevent him from contacting UH?

  4. Kekoa (iPhone):

Chill Jase - We have a new compliance director. Shall we get a ruling?

  5. T창 [대장입니다]:

    Cal-Berkeley being greedy.

The limited release bites big-time! Shouldn't he be allowed to contact schools outside of the PAC-10 and not on Cal's schedule for the time that he is eligible to play? No... that would make too much sense.

Eh, disregard my rambling rant. Must be feeding time. It's Friday night in Seoul. Going for sushi tonight (생선초밥, saengseonchobap).

  6. SteveM:

Jason -- I posted some ramblings at the end of the last blog regarding ubiquitous internet access.

...and a real "good morning" to ST in Utah.
    another "good night" from me...

  7. uhwarriors:

    Stephen,
Does this mean that if Scott Smith decides to come to UH, he isn't given a release which means he must walk-on rather than being on scholarship? In that case he would have 3 to play 3 and could be on scholarship after sitting out the required one year as a walk-on.

On a related matter, if he goes to another Pac-10 school which Cal approved and he gets his release, doesn't he have to sit out two years?

  8. addahknowjoe:

I can't wait to see Mac turn Mouton loose onto this season.

I love Ryans' return style: Nothing flashy. He explores and picks a developing gap, releases his Nitros and flat out flies north to south with reckless abandon! No jukes. No dancing. Just a full on, all out sprint to the finish line! I love it!

Ryan reminds me of, The Rocket. All business. Nothing personal given nor taken.

Man on kick offs, if everyone could just take care of their assignments and just give Mouton a sliver of opportunity, there will be a touchdown 12 seconds after every kick off UH fields.

Bring on the Gators! Let's get this bad boy season rollin!

    howzit Tsaikos everywhere!

    Compliance Guys.
Good luck in your future, BB! Really. And welcome Amanda! Really Really. Regarding your position, I'm just kinda with Kekoa on this one. UH would be served well with Doris Sullivan somewhere in the mix. She has helped so many Hawaii athletes get connected to a educational opportunity, knows the rules, etc.. But hey, maybe da bosses already thought of all that.

So here's my suggestion. Work really hard to get tomorrow's assignments and work done today. And, ask coach to allow you 5 minutes at the next coaches clinic. Introduce yourself. Start off on a positive. People like me want to support all aspects of Warrior Football and could use a tutorial from the likes of you instead of the usual "no can do." Thanks

  17. Ralph:

high altitude plays tougher, thin air makes it difficult to energize and your insides burn like hell. The swamp with humidity makes them sweat but if the athlete is well hydrated and in top physical condition, much easier to overcome...

  18. HiFlyer:

Yeah Ralph I can't see the pictures either.

Humm...Smith not being able to contact UH coaches? What kind of game is Berkely playing with Hawai`i boys? Could it be if they let him talk to UH that more Hawai`i born and bred players would asked to be released too?? Tipoti, etc? Kinda like a male anatomy part this feels like.

Also, from the WSN board, per WarblOw : Rawlins-Crivello las left the BSU team

ST- Does Utah have their own equivalence of a "Kamaaina" rate? Perhaps a Utonian Rate?

  28. NYUH:

    Thanks Ralph,

The high altitudes have been a particular burden UH has had to carry whether in Reno, Provo, etc. While the Gators will be tough, the heat should be manageable. After all, Hawaii starts to get warm in August too. I think one of the keys will be to make sure the players don't dehydrate on the plane.

    Feature on Doris and PIAA.

"We market the athletes to hundreds of a colleges around the country, we have a recruiting sheet that goes out with all their information on it," said Sullivan.

Sullivan heads the PIAA, a non-profit group looking to help place Pacific Islanders in football programs across the country.

"Before I never signed with the PIAA, I never had any college coaches talk to me, but once I signed there, they started to contact me," said Chauncy Makaina, Kailua High School offensive guard.

And now Chauncey has a scholarship offer from UH.

"If the University of Hawaii can't use them for some reason, they're going to have to go somewhere else, so we let them to keep their options open, and let them know what their options will be, and work along with their coaches to get them the best that they can get."

  32. Garret:

  33. Garret:

It is strange that Cal would seem to want Steve Smith to go to a competitor instead of UH...bad for Steve, bad for UH, and even bad for Cal because they have to face him every year if he stays in the Pac-10.

  34. Garret:

Bess mentioned as a key member of Miami's WR group.

Dan Henning always has had the uncanny ability to camouflage his play-calling with lots of motion to throw off opposing defenses. But far more significantly to a franchise stocked with inexperienced receivers and unproven quarterbacks, the 66-year-old Henning has a long history of transforming untapped potential into Pro Bowl starters.

He'll need more than a magic wand and mirrors to transform Ted Ginn Jr., Derek Hagan, Greg Camarillo and Davone Bess into a Redskins-like Posse, but he's done it before. Together, the Dolphins' receivers quartet has a total of seven NFL touchdowns.

  35. brew808:

Good Morning Garret! Towards the end of last night's blog, ST said he was flying home "tomorrow" as it was his "middle daughter's" birthday. That was at 10 pm HST - so I don't know if that means Fri or Sat. The other confusing part is - ST & Wena have two daughters right (+ Devon James)? How can Jodie be "middle daughter"?

  36. Hoohiki:

So if Scott Smith wants to go to UH, he has to walk on? Hey, didn't UH give their blessings to Abu Ma'afala to contact Cal? In fact I think JJ made the appropriate contacts for him. How soon people forget.

  70. Rob from Waipahu:

Interesting information on Scott Smith. The information that I received was that he was severely homesick last year and he used to call home constantly. The move to Oregon or one of the Arizona schools really would not make too much sense if that was the issue. The academics are very rigorous at Cal and maybe that would explain his request to move to another Pac 10 school.

Its been a while since I posted but I 'lurk' everyday (almost). Im trying to get tix to the Florida game but will definitely be home in Sept or Oct so I will be at one of the home games.

  123. LizKauai [Believer]:

Chris in ATL- we have extra Florida game tix. How many do you need?

  124. Koauka:

I think in football you need the release, so a player can receive aid (another scholarship) to a new school. Usually, no release means you wait one school year before gaining another schollie. An immediate release, you gain free agency and you are free choose.

Not to sure if this correct, but back in the day a friend I grew up with waited a whole year before he could try obtain another schollie.

  125. MP:

    re: scott smith

does cal benefit in any way by providing a limited release and allowing contact to three schools in the same conference, and/or is it in the best interest of the student athlete? Just trying to find the rationale behind this.

future recruits from the islands should take note and of what can and does happen before making commitment. Anyways, wish the best for scott smith and all hawaii athletes.

    GO WARRIORS!!!!!

  126. SteveM:

Chris in ATL -- hope you have noticed the Tsai-ko group going to the swamp with a Cattle Call the night before in Orlando...

    http://home.hawaii.rr.com/smurashi/tsai-kos/florida08.html

Send you your info if you'd like to be added to the list. A-House is coordinating the Orlando Call but there may be other get-togethers. Keep in touch and join us at Richardson Field when you're home.

  127. Koauka:

Is there a difference? A release or limited release?

  128. Kekoa:

MP ~ There's no rationale. That's why they call that school Berserkley!

  129. SteveM:

Hello MP welcome to the blog! Are you a guy and do you reside in Hawaii?

    Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Hey SteveM-
Don’t go scarin’ off the new female posters with too many questions. Wait until they’ve posted a few times, THEN start stalkin’. :)

OK Kid-- before we really scare off the Tsai-kettes... let me ask you this...

    1. Is Chris in ATLshort for Christopher or Christina?
    2. Does Pauoa Boy reside in Pauoa today?

    No scared -- I'm mostly harmless... :?

  130. homey ☢:

That's some chicken chit stunt Cal is pulling. What, they have sour grapes issues with UH?

I don't know about SteveM, you better check what kind of frozen parts he has in his fridge.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY JODIE!

  131. al:

so is stevem tucked away at some public educational facility in the handicap stall, no less, playing with his toy?

i mean his new itouch. wait, that didn't sound right either.

    steve....what you doing?

  132. LizKauai [Believer]:

wow, xs-irradiated-homey, sounds like SteveM is the new homey blog target!

...just because he got an iTouch... tsk tsk...

  133. SteveM:

Al -- what you mean, "what I doing"? How about lunch at Genji's today? I want to find out what happened after we left on the 10th...

  134. Stretch:

    Lunch at Genjis??

  135. Ronnie:

    Happy Aloha Friday!

    This is for ST:

The New York Jets have received permission to talk to retired Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre, a source told ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Friday.

  136. Pauoa Boy:

    Howzit Gang...

    Happy Birthday Jodie Tsai

  137. SteveM:

Lunch at Genji's -- if it's only a few of us, it won't over-burden their lunch staff. :(

  138. FloridaTed:

    Happy Birthday, Jodie.

Was I really 19 once? Seems like another life from here. Cherish every day, it all will wizz by in no time.

  139. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    SteveM-
I won't answer those questions. Because if I did, you'd miss out on all the fun you'd have wondering about those things. You can't fool me, you sly ole' stalker... ;)

  140. al:

    ahhh.

first of all, what happens at genji's stays at genji's. remember, wasn't it you who made that rule?

second, i just inhaled a rainbow drive inn plate just minutes ago. so you know i am in the belly up position.

anyway, many deadlines to finish since my extended hiatus.

A quick post before I head into town. Mahalo to those with best wishes to DrDoc. He started off by seeing a specialist on Wednesday and will be going to other MD types over the next two weeks as well as taking a series of tests to determine what might be the best options. For now, all I can do is put everything about the future aside until something is known.

Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary and Happy Flight and whoever else is celebrating

A quick reminder: We have several sizes of EZ-Corner tarp-style tents from 10' x 10' to 20' x 40' to loan to organizations holding various kinds of events. This weekend, for example, they are in Waimanalo being used at an event being sponsored by a couple of educational organizations. There is no charge.

They are also available for a very reasonable rental fee to individuals, businesses, and families holding reunions or anniversary celebration or promotions. The fees go to one of several non-profits. Jason and Stephen have my contact infcormation.

I'm a guy in hawaii, am a big time lurker. enjoy reading comments in this blog from informed, intelligent and funny people. Very entertaining.

still trying to figure out cal's move.

ok, mini because seating is limited to twenty.
    and they are going fast.

  147. gigi-hawaii ©:

al, the menu is wonderful!!! I know you will have a good turn out. Unfortunately, I have to babysit. I ate there once and the food is excellent.

  148. A-House:

Are there other Hawaii players at Cal that are thinking of leaving their program to come home?

It's a reat Shitty move by Cal to give Scott a limited release!!!

Beware high school football players - not all programs are like Hawaii where the coaching staff is willing to listen to a release request and grant it unless exceptional circumstances exist.

  149. al:

gg....bring the baby. she can sit in the kitchen with the cooks while you dine and sip on a singha or two. better than beck's.

  150. A-House:

Happy birday to Jodie, our good neighbor's daughter!!!!

  151. MeiLing:

    Happy birthday, Jodie!!!

  152. al:

i think a school gives a release to those schools that are requested by the student/athlete for such.

    good afternoon good people!

    "koa FAMILY"? haaaaaa

Al - too bad for me, wouldn't have mind trying Thai but no kan on wednesday.

yep its back to lurking myself..............

  154. gigi-hawaii ©:

haha Al. Baby is now at the book case next to the computer. She pulled out Jason's Football for Dummies. Good taste, eh? Took out my book mark, too.

  155. MeiLing:

Dr.Doc, Hope they can figah out what ails you. Think positive.

  156. A-House:

Will the resurfacing of Cooke Field bids be opened today? What time?

As more info is "leaked" to the public about the Contractor's License Board happenings, it appears that, perhaps, more under handed situations took place in board meetings which now affect those who may want to bid for State projects be it painting or artificial turf.

Auwe, it only hurts the people of Hawaii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You tried Thai many times, just not the food.

  158. al:

gg....lucky its a baby and not a puppy. the latter would have chewed and shredded the book by now.

g....you will be missing out on a very special opportunity to dine on some great thai cuisine. coupled with an ice cold singha beer.....the only other thing that you would miss is perhaps meeting the twins.

  159. al:

    ah, instigator has arrived.

    did you go genji's?

  160. Stretch:

al - not sure who you are asking, but if you were wondering, I didn't eat lunch at Genji's.

  161. A-House:

OK, I would like to join Kekoa and place my support for Doris Sullivan to be considered for the Compliance position at UH.

She is well known for her outstanidng work with hundreds of Hawaii youngsters who seek to further their education obtaining scholarships or grants or loans to attend colleges/universities at home or on the mainland.

Compliance with NCAA rules, I'm sure, is one of the primary tasks facing her daily. Others include working with parents and students to insure that the athlete is academically qualified.

Doris, please apply for the position.

  162. homey ♂:

If I come to Phuket Thai can I have Rob25's portion of the shrimp red curry?

  163. gigi-hawaii ©:

And don't forget BHF2. We should all send him a $10 check and if we all did, he would be reimbursed for the JUGs.

SEC media vote picks Florida to win the SEC over UGa. Auburn was picked to finish atop the SEC-West.

Many said Georgia has more overall talent, but at the end of the day Florida's offense was too good to pass up atop the SEC.

Florida received 36 of fthe 70 first-place votes to outdistance No. 2 Georgia in the predicted SEC order of finish. Both belong in the national top five, which indicates Nov. 1 couldn't come soon enough (Where Urban might or might not have "Urban's Way" and pay back Mark Richt for his unsportsmanlike conduct).

Whoa! Nov.1 is a long way from Aug. 30...

  171. g-nalo:

You tried Thai many times, just not the food.

    hey now..............

but Honolulu get food handling laws, pretty sure i can eat like a Tsaiko and not worry? anyways, hopefully another chance later on.

  172. d1島:

Not much "love" for Bobby Petrino at Arkansas. They are picked last in the SEC-West voting.

OVERALL SEC FINISH -- Florida (36), Georgia (18), Auburn (13), LSU (1), Tennessee (1), Ole Miss (1...who in the world picked this one?).

    EAST -- 1. Florida (45), 2. Georgia (23); 3. Tennessee (2), 4. South Carolina, 5. Kentucky, 6. Vanderbilt

WEST -- 1. Auburn (48), 2. LSU (21), 3. Alabama, 4. Mississippi State, 5. Ole Miss (1), 6. Arkansas (Welcome to the SEC, Bobby Petrino)

Maybe there's some doubt that he will even be there at the end of the season???

    heheheh

  173. d1島:

    Confused-cious say,

Short day only deserve short break.

    NauPauLunChauWah...

  174. Committed Lurker:

It's nice to see the pictures are up and working again.

The SEC picks seem fair for the most part, though w/r/t Bobby Petrino, it's in the best interest of Arkansas that he not bolt after the first season, a la the Falcons gig.

  175. g-nalo:

g….you will be missing out on a very special opportunity to dine on some great thai cuisine. coupled with an ice cold singha beer…..the only other thing that you would miss is perhaps meeting the twins.

    yep, i figah so.

btw - don't know if Singha is better than Beck's but do know Singha is good stuff. i wouldn't finish a Tsaiko beer mugs worth.

and hopefully there'll be no bid problems afterward? sometimes the apparent low bidder isn't awarded the contract.

  177. homey ❤:

The Singha complements the Thai food better than Becks. Becks is too bold and will detract the taste of the food. Singha will soothe the palate thereby enhancing the flavor of each dish. Nah, just kidding. Tsaik!

  178. A-House:

    g-nalo:

    Know what you mean.

Just don't want the Contractor License Board controversery to slow/stop the resurfacing.

Can a "non-board" contractor make recommendations on "guidelines" on special licences to the Board for consideration?

Wholesale unfair advantage to some one like Sadowski who is a contractor and sits on the board.

Did I miss something, but the HA did not run a story on this at all? If yes, is there a connection?

  179. A-House:

Too all members of any board/commission:

IMHO, you have only ONE boss/focus/interest and that is the people of Hawaii. If this is unacceptable, please consider resigning immediately.

  180. FloridaTed:

    A-House,

It strikes me as slighly odd that HA has not mentioned anything about this Contractors Board brewhaha. As I understand it, UH can still pick a bid and the Contractors can fight over it later, State Ethics also wants to get involved. I'd say get'r done and then fight all you want, lol.

  181. A-House:

    ST, good neighbor:

Are you at the boarding gate for your "delayed" flight?

Coming up to the 6 pm hour MDST.

Can you get a flight home out of the West Coast tonight?

Jodi, may be very late dinner or regular dinner time.

  182. A-House:

    Florida Ted:

ditto your #180 - get it done and then go fight in the courts!!!!!!!!!

  183. HiFlyer:

  184. g-nalo:

Can a “non-board” contractor make recommendations on “guidelines” on special licences to the Board for consideration?

i would think yes cause the Board is there to serve ALL Contractors.

  202. Garret:

This news was already released yesterday, but just in case anyone missed it...UH will need to gear up for the run when SJSU comes to Aloha Stadium this season. I hope that Maka gets his 6th year also!

With fall camp less than two weeks away, San Jose State filled a glaring need at running back with the return of the eighth-leading rusher in school history.

Yonus Davis, who missed most of last season because of an ankle injury and whose status was uncertain all summer, has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, Coach Dick Tomey announced Thursday at the Western Athletic Conference media day in Salt Lake City.

Davis rushed for 1,007 yards as a junior and was a big reason the Spartans made their first bowl appearance since 1990. But he suffered a sprained ankle on SJSU's first offensive play last season and carried the ball just three times. Davis met the NCAA's requirements to receive a medical hardship but also had to address several academic issues to be cleared by the school.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Hi Hawaiianbod: No I don't work w/ Doris.

Hi SteveM: I am not a tsai-kette. What does it take to become one? I also split my time between Maui & Oahu, but I'm mostly here on the west side of Oahu.

I'll try to post more. My two babies keep me pretty busy during the day so I usually try to lurk at night, when the house is quiet. I love football & this blog is awesome - so much information!

Ok back to the keikis. Have a great weekend!

  212. J-Dog:

    re: Francis Maka

The advantage Yonus Davis had was that he is still currently at the school that was required to send in the paperwork to the NCAA. I believe ST mentioned in a previous blog that the difficulty Maka is facing is getting the paperwork from the University of Arizona.

  213. LizKauai [Believer]:

Vanessa- how old are the babies? BTW- you are already a Tsai-kette  Congrats!

  224. Garret:

    Great article from scout.com.

The plan for this vision began after June Jones' inaugural season on the islands. "Nobody really knew how to deal with it or wanted to deal with doing it," Assistant Head Coach Rich Miano told Scout.com. "Since we took over last year and it was successful, it gets easier the more you do it."

Hawai'i Speed and Quickness (http://www.hawaiispeedandquickness.com/ was founded by Miano and UH Strength and Conditioning Coach Mel deLaura. Their mission? They are committed to improving athleticism and integrity of Hawaii's youth through all sports.

Just based on the turnout, it appears these camps were a bombshell waiting to go off. It doesn't hurt that the Warriors went to a BCS bowl game for the first time in history and put UH footballl back on the national radar.

"Even people who don't like footballl were following it," Miano said of Hawaii's resurgence. And with it has come record highs in season ticket sales, as well as donations to Na Koa, the booster club that supports the UH football program.

"With the success of the program, we've been able to get the things we need," Miano added. "Most programs have recruiting coordinators and secretaries in the front of the office. The locker room is embarrassing. The field turf has been condemned. But now, we've had people step up for the new surface and the coaches' offices. It's not just going to be artist renderings anymore."

"I will always be a Warrior at heart," Tanuvasa told Scout.com Wednesday. He moved to Hawai'i from Samoa at a young age and went to high school in Mililani before matriculating to UH. "I've always wanted to come back to my roots and help any way I could. With Coach McMackin, a lot of the NFL scouts call. With those type of connections, it's a great deal to stay here, as opposed to having to go away to play."

  225. Unkanesson:

    Howzit Tsaikos everywhere!
It's taken me all day (not unusual), with various interruptions (work can be such a pain...but at least I can lurk on the WB when slow) to get through today's comments. Entertaining and enlightening as always!
Hey ST -- Enjoyed the article on Mouton (as always), but I gotta pick one small nit:
it's Honorable Discharge, not Honorary...heheheheh... everybody slips up once in a while, even the venerable Mr. Tsai. Blame it on the editors -- aren't they supposed to pick up things like that? Yeah, that's the ticket, it's all their fault......
    A hui hou kakou!

  226. Da Punchbowl Kid:

The new owners of Liliha Bakery plan to keep it as is, and maybe even franchise the concept. When Sweety and I are both being very weak, we love to get some o' them cocoa puffs. mmmmmMMMMMmmmmm.

Perhaps a box of cocoa-puffs at the end of the 40 mark, first to get there gets it.....woohoo, watch the Warriors 40 times improve dramatically!!!

Have a nice weekend all you Tsaikos!

  231. onarock:

    Hawaiianbod,

Funny you mention the overpricing and under-proportioned portions. The wife and I went there last night. Talk about wop-yo-jaws, fricken surf pac is almost $10!!! And dat buggah is no special bento or anything! Sad thing is, until their competition have better pricing, their pricing now going stick around for who knows how long, or maybe even get worse. The average $5 plate lunches will be a thing of the past very soon.

  232. Willie:

Peter Kim played for the Hall of Fame coach "Bear" Bryant at Alabama and had a very successful career. If not for some leg problems I believe he would have made it in the NFL. Leg was strong & he was really accurate. My friend and I provided him with the introduction from soccer to football at Kaiser HS through Bill VonArnswaldt.

  233. Rob25:

Homey - I will let you have my shrimp if you can behave!

You might be quick on the chopsticks and take it before I even see it.

  234. Maverick:

Tell Zippy's to STOP riding the Gravy train ( yes, pun intended.) The party boat days are over.

  235. Hawaiianbod:

    onarock - $10! OMG!!

Have you noticed the ever-so shrinking portion of the rice and mac salad? It appears they went out of their way to find the smallest scooper avaiable. I thought I was back in elementary school.

  236. momotaro:

Hi DPK (belated greetings from last night), it sounds like you are cuckoo for cocoa puffs!

  237. momotaro:

With regard to Smith's limited release from his football scholarship, I'll go with Occam's Razor and suggest that the release was limited to the schools where Smith would like to transfer. Cal does not gain anything by limiting the schools to which Smith could transfer. It may be that Smith thought he could not transfer to UH due to the July 1 deadline mentioned in Stephen's post and that Oregon, Arizona, and ASU do not have such a deadline.

  238. SteveM:

  241. A-House:

what happened to the opening of the Cooke Filed resurfing bids?

nothing on the 6pm news - what's going on???????????

  242. wafan:

The Dork Knight was first on several other HA blog sites.

    Interesting.

    Who is that masked man/woman?

  243. Stephen Tsai:

Well, after missing one flight and then almost missing another, I am back on the rock.
First, it was that long delay out of Salt Lake City, forcing me to reschedule my connector out of S.F. Then when we finally get on the plane, nothing. We just wait. it turns out that the Salt Lake crew forgot to send a truck to fuel the plane.
A half-hour later, we're in flight. Then as we get close to S.F, suddenly we're going upward. Turns out that there was too much runway traffic. So for the next 45 minutes we're just, well, hanging around. I told the guy next to me it was a good thing the plane was gassed up. He said, no, that's a bad thing. If we were low on fuel, they'd make us land.
And so we land and, naturally, I'm at the other end of the terminal. And so your blog host sprinted. The final 20 yards, I'm screaming like a little girl: Wait, oh, please, wait.
    And they did.
Yes, it was my luck that United, for the first time this year, decided to have a flight depart on time.

  244. Stephen Tsai:

Hey, I think "Curt" is in the Hilo Hattie's ad that they show on airplanes.

  245. Stephen Tsai:

    Unkanesson:
    Nice catch.
Nobody's catching many things these days since I've been feuding with some non-sports-department people. After a story goes through our sports folks, it ges a once-over from another department.
    Thanks again.

  246. wafan:

    Welcome home Mr. Tsai!

I hope you have a wonderful dinner with your family -- now that they are half starved. HA!

    Happy Birthday Tsai #2!

  247. gigi-hawaii ©:

hmmm, Homey, Stretch, and D1 -- looks like we still have a bet -- sort of.

Brett Favre plans to report to the Green Bay training camp to force a show-down. Will they go with Favre or with the new QB?

The ideal situation for him would be to rehired by GB, wouldn't it?

So to refresh your memory, I bet that Favre, if hired by GB, will take the team to a Super Bowl win. You guys bet that he will not.

    Prize: lunch at Camellia.

  248. gigi-hawaii ©:

woo hoo. Let's see if I can hang on to my winning streak. I have already won 2 bets against Tsaikos. My prizes were lunch at Camellia and dinner at Genji.

Ikaika- Uncle Tracy is very proud of you. Very proud.

" In the one-on-one pass rush drill, it was obvious that Ikaika Alama-Francis has spent some time working on his inside counter moves. He still has a long way to go, but his technique is better. These one-on-one drills will be important for Alama-Francis because he has to build up some confidence with his pass rush."

    CORRECTION TO MY BET --

Favre still has a contract with GB til 2010.

    ANOTHER CORRECTION TO MY BET:

I bet that if Favre STARTS for GB, he will take the team to the Super Bowl in 2009.

  272. gigi-hawaii ©:

    GO FAVRE, GO PACKERS!

  273. Garret:

This projected Miami depth chart has a lot of relevance to some Warriors.

    FB Reagan Mauia, Boomer Grigsby
This is a fairly even battle, and these two will likely rotate who works with the starting unit. I'm predicting whoever is the best special teams player gets the starting spot.

LWR Ernest Wilford, Derek Hagan, Selwyn Lymon, Justin Wynn, John Dunlap
Wilford's just about set in stone as the starting possession receiver, but Hagan has an outside shot of taking him down if he plays with some level consistency, and stops dropping passes. Lymon, Wynn and Dunlap are likely battling with Bess and Foster for the two practice squad spots that will likely go to receivers.

RWR Ted Ginn Jr., David Kircus, Greg Camarillo, Davone Bess, Jayson Foster
Speed is a mandate for this slot, therefore Kircus, Camarillo, Bess and Foster must be able to create separation from opposing cornerbacks, and produce RAC (run-after-catch) yards.

C Samson Satele, Steve McKinney, Mike Byrne, Matt Spanos
Satele is the future at this position, so he's pretty much written in pen as a starter. Going against Jason Ferguson daily will also help him improve. McKinney needs to show he's over the season-ending knee injury to make the 53-man roster.

"correction"?? you not trying to change the bet, right??

  275. Garret:

Jessica Simpson has supposedly been trying to keep her romance with Tony Romo as low-key as possible to reduce distractions for him...but then she dedicated a song to him.

Jessica Simpson has dedicated a new song to boyfriend Tony Romo, You're My Sunday.

Cowboys fans are no doubt drafting a musical response as we speak, Give Us Back Our Sunday, Yoko. Subtitle: "Your Bye-Week Trip with Romeo Was Our Playoff Loss."

Simpson, nicknamed "Yoko Romo" by fans who accuse her of distracting Cowboys quarterback/boyfriend Tony Romo, has tried to stay out of the way as well. Still, she could not resist dedicating a new song to Romo called, You're My Sunday.

"Tonight there's this guy here, he throws a football and he's really good at it, he's my better tomorrow and I wrote this song for him," she reportedly told a country-music crowd that included Romo in Wisconsin last weekend.

  276. Garret:

Free play link time. Please ignore my next 5 posts if you do not want the off-topic stuff. We have houseguests this weekend so I won't be posting much this weekend after the next 5 minutes.

If this Stanford study is correct, our bodies do not just wear out as we age…our genes trigger the aging process. This theory would mean that with periodic gene therapy humans could be like some animals who do not age (tortoises lay eggs at 100 and whales could live more than 400 years, etc.).

  277. Garret:

Amazing that Southwest Airlines has not lost money in ANY quarter since 1991! But their profitability is largely due to their lower fuel costs due to their hedges…but their hedges are slowly ending and they will have to pay market prices for fuel soon. Last year 90% of their fuel was cheap due to hedges, now that is down to 80%, next year it will be 70%, in 2010 it will be 40%, and in 2011 it will be 20%! Southwest has put a freeze on its growth plans…so I guess they won’t be starting their flights to Hawaii for quite some time.

  282. gigi-hawaii ©:

    STRETCH,

I corrected the bet because I wanted to make it clear that Favre has to start for the season, not just for the Fall, and that by starting, he will guide the team to a SB victory.

I have no faith in the other QB.

  283. Garret:

Is Miami going to acquire a vet WR? That would be bad for Bess as it would drop him one spot on the depth chart and make it much harder to make the active roster...though he could still get a practice squad spot.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters today that receiver Terry Glenn will be released

Glenn is 34 years old and has knee issues which is the reason the Cowboys didn't want to risk letting him get injured in training camp. That might land Glenn on injured reserve and force the Cowboys to pay his $1.74 million salary without getting production in return.

So Glenn goes. Because he is a veteran with a certain amount of vested seasons, Glenn will not go through waivers. His contract is terminated. So he will be a free agent.

I don't think I have to remind you the Dallas connection involved here. The fact the Dolphins need receivers help and the fact Bill Parcells was with New England and became a fan of Glenn once owner Robert Kraft forced the coach to draft him.

There are also reports out of Arizona that receiver Anquan Boldin, although unhappy, will remain with the Arizona Cardinals. Although he said he would not re-sign with the team when his current contract expires in 2010, Boldin has said publicly he will, in fact, be with the Cards until 2010.

Well, this situation also demands scrutiny by the Dolphins.

You put this together: The Cardinals have a disgruntled 27-year-old receiver who has appeared in multiple Pro Bowls. He is from Pahokee, FL. He played at Florida State. He loves South Florida. Did I mention the Dolphins have a HUGE need to improve their receivers corps? They have a spare second-round pick they just got in the Jason Taylor trade. And they have approximately $21 million in salary cap space that they cannot possibly spend before the end of this season.

    Can you say perfect fit?

  284. gigi-hawaii ©:

I really have a strong feeling that I will win again. Sorry, guys!

  285. Ralph:

Hamocon won the Cooke field bid, he did the Murakami stadium... His winning bid won over Sadowski by $25K

  286. gigi-hawaii ©:

Ralph. Does Hamocon have the correct license to do the turf?

  287. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER:

gigi- THAT is the $25K question....

  288. Ralph:

he does not have the license recommended to the contractors board..His company was targeted and eliminated from the bidding protocol but looks like he submitted a bid anyway...now the question, will the low bid be accepted..

  289. gigi-hawaii ©:

Well, I thought having the correct license was NOT a requirement; it was advisory only.

  290. Ralph:

became advisory only after people complained, not when Hamocon approached the board and asked how come the rules were changed to keep him from competing for the project.

    STRETCH,
I corrected the bet because I wanted to make it clear that Favre has to start for the season, not just for the Fall, and that by starting, he will guide the team to a SB victory.
I have no faith in the other QB.

If you are "clarifying" you should say clarifying, not correction. When I see correction, it looks like you are changing the bet. Almost like a contract, once it's signed, you no can change the details.

  292. al:

gigi.....the rules of a bet does not allow one to alter his/her position when originally made. that would be renigging the bet.

be honorable and don't "correct" a bet once it was made. that is not "gentlemanly like" when it comes to betting. it is akin to saying that "my word is no good".

.....on another note, i will bet you that when the season starts, brett favre will no longer be a packer. to clarify on opening day of the regular season in 2008, favre will not be in a packer uniform. camellia's would be nice.

  293. al:

    stretch,
you should ask the blog archivist to research the declaration of bet. that should settle the issue. once a party throws out a bet and is accepted by another, the bet is consummated. no turning back.

on another note.........did you organize a search party for the homo sapien hungry shark on the all too dangerous west side?

  294. al:

methinks....scott smith will become a duck like his uncle donald "dpk" duck.

  297. al:

    yah lizk.....that was really neat.

  298. Jason:

Glad to see you're back safe, Stephen.

  299. Thanks4thehelp:

Sorry this is so late, but we went to cool off at another $1 Restaurant Row movie and just got back home.

RE the Bid Openings: There were four submitted. Two were approximately $20,500 apart and the other two were several hundred thousand dollars more.

    Winning Bid: $862,881
    Next Lowest Bid: $883,363

The whole opening-the-bids event took less than ten minutes. Excluding Procurement Office staff, I think there were no more than eight or nine of us present in the room.

The lowest bidder will be checked out for tax clearances and for meeting the tech specs. Bear in mind that the tech specs did NOTNOTNOT specify anything about a particular contractor's license beyond the following:

To be eligible to bid, bidders must possess a valid State of Hawaii contractor's license A. BIDS FROM CONTRACTORS NOT LICENSED IN THE STATE OF HAWAII WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

(Note: The bolded capitalized sentence was also underlined, but the HA blogfonts don't use them.)

About an hour later, I spoke with David Hafner, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Campus Services/Office of Facilities and Grounds, who said that it will take approximately one week for all the paperwork to be finalized.

As soon as that is done, the first two steps the contractor will take are to initiate the permitting process and to order the materials not immediately available which could take anywhere from two to six weeks to arrive. During that time, all of the site preparatory work will be completed.

We should all thank the Procurement Office and David Hafner for expediting the bidding process.

As for the Bigger Picture Issues surrounding this controversy, it would be very appropriate to ask for an Legislative Auditor's inquiry as to how this happened. Bear in mind, however, that this is an election year and not much will be accomplished until after the voting results are in and the new committee chairs have been announced. Who they are will be determined by who is elected the Senate President and Speaker of the House by members of the newly-elected Legislature.

In the meantime, perhaps Mark Takai who was elected outright for another term should be asked to help facilitate the inquiry.

The Contractors License Board itself next meets on Friday, August 22; however, the agenda, date, time, and location will not be posted until the previous week. NOTE: The middle two items rarely change so interested parties could look at the Minutes of previous meeting.

If anyone is interested in attending this meeting and wants to speak up, then please contact the DCCA Contractors office at 586-2700 for information about the Public Input part of the agenda.

W-Doc, thanks for the Ching field bid update. I hope this doesn't go into litigation. If it does, you'll KNOW for sure that Sadowski manipulated the regs for his benefit.

Jayson, mahalo for the Colt / Taylor article. IMHO, Colt learns this year, starts next year.

BHF2, morning! Rained harder here last night than it would in Hilo in the middle of our hula performance. Got to meet a young man, Taylor, from St. Anthony's on Maui, here for a baseball camp. Kona miss hanging out with students here, but I'll go look for a job a UH. You should be getting mail from me soon.

ST, hope you had a wonderful evening with the 'ohana. Memories...

Kekoa, glad you making sure errybody is behaving.

K, hula class all day today. I'm going to be "leg-less" today, sitting on a stool & just learning the arms ('uli'uli hulas.) How strange is that? Maybe I'll be able to make a Cardinals practice tomorrow.

Just got a call from whitey in Alaska. It seems Mr. A-House caught all the fish and they haven't had much luck. Just like Vegas, having fun, but losing money!

Will report on his catches later today!

  318. Garret:

"It would be a huge thing if we could actually get on this field," said Grasso, the Warriors kicker and a senior at Manoa. "Right now, it's not really used that much. The track's great but to actually have a practice out on this field would be great. It's right next to the locker room."

But the difference between the lowest and the highest bid is almost $400 thousand.

"For me that just goes to show, the need for competition, fair competition," said Logan Hamocon, whose company Sports Turf Hawaii had the lowest bid at $862,381.

Applied Surface Technology had the next lowest bid at $883,863. Two other bids were $1.05 million and $.125 million.

Hamocon did the work on Murakami Stadium, winning praise from the baseball team. The football team looks forward to a similar type of synthetic turf.

"Practicing on turf is a lot better than on grass," said Grasso. "If your opponent is playing on turf, you should be practicing on turf. It's tough for us because Aloha Stadium is so far away. We can't practice there but it would be huge to practice on Cooke Field."

Hamocon wants to make that happen for the Warriors as soon as possible.

"My team, my company, myself, we're ready to go," he said. "So just give us the work."

So you're sticking with the run-and-shoot?

Greg McMackin: I believe in the run-and-shoot. The players there know the run-and-shoot. I think it's the best offense in the game. The pros are using it. They pretend they don't. It's a read offense, so it's a coaching man's offense. Repetitions, teaching it over and over again, that's what I believe football is all about. Defensive football, fundamentals, techniques -- its a coaching man's offense.

"It's not about the quarterback," backup quarterback Tyler Graunke said Friday after rallying the unbeaten Warriors to a 28-26 victory over Nevada. "It's not about the Heisman Trophy candidate. We can win with anybody. We've got a total team here."

  322. NYUH:

    More history, but good writing
    http://thehawaiiherald.com/2008/07/21/the-magical-reno-weekend-an-award-winning-article/

“Do you really think Graunke can start and win — on the road — against Nevada?” Geoff asked somberly. It was the question that held over our heads like a dark cloud for the rest of lunch. We tried to remain optimistic; after all, Graunke had played well in wins against Charleston Southern and Utah State. But we all knew the situation was troublesome: Hawai‘i had never won in Reno and Nevada was a tough team; earlier in the season they had pushed powerhouse Boise State to the limit before finally succumbing in four overtimes. And while Graunke was a capable backup, he didn’t possess nearly the same talents that Brennan had developed over the past two and a half seasons, let alone Brennan’s unique mastery of the Hawai‘i offense. It was obvious that we could all use a bit of encouragement. As if by chance, that bode of confidence came in the form of the Silver Legacy casino.

  323. gigi-hawaii ©:

NO, al, I am not betting against you, cause I am already up against 3 guys. Hey, no fair! j/k.

What was the original bet, Stretch? You remember?

If it said "rehired by GB," then that would be the wrong wording cause Favre still has a contract with them.

The correct word should be "start."

  324. Pauoa Boy:

NYUH - Such silly rabbits, you gotta be kidding me. I feel sorry for the dirty lickens all these WAC teams will get when our Warrior boys come and whoop there arses! Maybe when they watch Florida, Weber State, and Oregon State Tapout from getting smacked silly all day before the WAC season begins, will they understand who the WAC Champs are and will remain undefeated!!!

  325. Pauoa Boy:

    Re: Brett Farve

I hate when athletes pull the rope-a-dope move and are indecisive of whether they are coming or going. If you didn't really want to retire than why mention so? Regardless if he comes back to GB or not, I could care less of Brett Farve. He should help in the development of Aaron Rodgers by letting him start. Dude is 38 years old, I mean realistically how many more NFL seasons do you think this guy can play? Granted he still is better than half the QB's still in the NFL but Viagra only works for so long. If he plays one more season then leaves without a Superbowl ring, it was just prolonging the process of Rodgers taking over which will hurt GB rather than help later on. GB has a good team but Superbowl capable I think not...

    PB,

Didn't Warren Moon play well past his 40th birthday? Don't give up on Favre; he's not 40 yet.

Just remember that GB narrowly lost to the eventual Super Bowl champ, the Giants. They still have it in them to take it to the house next year, especially with Favre at the helm.

    GO FAVRE! GO PACKERS!

  330. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER:

    Hi Stretch!
    The day is still young.

    Hi PB, Hi gigi!

It sounds like Farve but it is spelled Favre...

  332. Pauoa Boy:

Aunty Gigi - I just making trouble, I not giving up on him. He's still better than most the QB's in the NFL still. I'm not a Green Bay fan but do like there team, especially the defense. I'm a defensive type and think they are one of the best in the NFL. Just wondering how long the Viagra can hold up das all  Nah, but they should have been in the Superbowl last year would've been a good read, then I think Farve would stay retired. Nothing against the Giants but Eli Manning can go fly a kite I dislike that guy with a passion...okay I guess I better switch to water now to much haterade this morning lol...

    hiya, Liz!

PB, actually my fave QB is Tom Brady. Love his cute face and fearless physique.

Hubby and I had a war going on during the Super Bowl. He hates the Patriots because of spygate and was cheering for the Giants. Sad to say, his team won.

  336. gigi-hawaii ©:

Of course, if GB faces New England in the Super Bowl, I'll be in deep kimchi, cause I like both teams, though Brady is cuter than Favre!

Get this one QB who plays in D.C. in one place they call HogTown that is pretty mean, he's probably my favorite QB in the NFL...
