The hurry-up defense
By Stephen Tsai
Greg McMackin always has had a need for speed.
And, so, moving defensive end Francis Maka to defensive tackle fits in with a strategy McMackin has used repeatedly at UH.
When McMackin was hired as a defensive coordinator at UH in 1999, he realized he had little time to overhaul a defense that was a carryover from an 0-12 season. He improved speed by moving cornerbacks to safety, safeties to outside linebacker, outside linebackers to defensive end, and ends to defensive tackles. Without changing the roster, the overall defensive speed improved.
He continued that practice when he returned to UH as a defensive coordinator last year, moving John Fonoti from linebacker to defensive end, Keao Monteilh from cornerback to safety, and using cornerback Ryan Mouton, the defense's fastest player, as a nickelback.
For this season, he moved C.J. Allen-Jones to defensive end, and made Josh Leonard a permanent defensive tackle.
The latest move is Maka, who was recruited to UH as a linebacker.

(Sorry for the double post, but I put this up just before the old thread was ended....) Does this story remind anyone of our season?
THE STORY OF THE OLD FARMER
By Judy Marshall, Ph.D.
(A Chinese/Zen Fable, as told by Judy Marshall)
There once was an old farmer, who lived in a remote region of the mainland, where the terrain is rough and the villagers manage to eek out a meager existence only through hard work and the grace of God. One day someone left the gate open on the farmer’s pasture, and his only horse ran away. Now this was a very grave situation, indeed, as in these parts it is said that one horse is worth ten sons or the earnings of a lifetime. The villagers, hearing of this great loss, came to console the farmer. With pity in their eyes of those who are glad it did not happen to them, the villagers shook their heads and moaned in unison that the running off of a horse is a terrible thing. The farmer, who was very wise, accepted their consolations, and shaking his head, muttered calmly, “We’ll just wait and see.”
Within a week the horse had returned, bringing with it three wild ponies of such magnificence only heard of in the ancient fables. The villagers all came to witness and marvel at these wondrous creatures, and some brought gifts in the hope of incurring favor as now the farmer was a very rich man. With envy in their eyes, the villagers applauded the farmer for his good fortune. But the farmer appeared unmoved, and showing neither pride nor excitement, accepted their blessings, stating calmly, “We’ll just wait and see.”
Three days later, after the villagers had gone home, the farmer’s only son was out breaking in the new ponies. But their magnificence was matched by an unexpected strength, and the second pony threw and trampled the farmer’s son, leaving him near dead with two broken legs. There were tears in the old peasant’s eyes as he carried his child off the field. The son survived the critical period, and his bones were set, but as the villagers gathered to hear the news and lend support, the doctor could not pronounce if the son would ever walk again. With eyes like smug rodents whose faith in themselves is confirmed when ill fortune attends to a lucky man, the villagers shook their heads, lamenting what a tragedy had occurred for the farmer, who now had a cripple for a son. The old farmer thanked them for their concern and condolences, calmly saying, “We’ll just wait and see.”
The farmer’s son did begin to recuperate, but it took a long time. The farmer was now poorer than ever, as he had no son to accompany him in the fields, and no one wanted to buy the ponies because they were afraid. Yet, by the help of occasional gifts and his own labor, he managed to gather just enough to feed his family, always giving the best of whatever he had to his son to encourage his recuperation. During this time the other villagers flourished as much as poor villagers can, and as those who are better off are wont to do, they were generous with their sympathy for the farmer for having a crippled child.
For no reason that had anything to do with the village, the king from his palace far off in the capital city declared war on a neighboring country. That was how it came to be that in the spring, just as the old farmer’s son was taking his first steps, the government officials appeared with orders to conscript all the able-bodied young men into the army. The only son in the entire village who was not drafted was the old farmer’s.
“How lucky you are, old man! We are sending our children, our very seed off to war, probably to die,” one or another of the villagers yelled out as they bade farewell to their departing sons. Full of tears, their eyes showed no particular emotion toward the farmer, so overcome were they with their own grief.
The farmer watched the leave-taking, and his heart went out to the villagers as he was a kind and compassionate man. So, he answered softly, “We’ll just wait and see.”

Good mornin' ya'll...
RE: Francis Maka.
When I saw Maka I always thought he had the build for a DT anyway. Thinking about this makes me realize I shouldn't have been surprised Quentin Beaver was asked to "drop a few" before re-joining the program.
November 6th, 2008 at 9:29 am
Steve M - cool site you made. Thx!
November 6th, 2008 at 9:32 am
I like the idea of putting Maka at DT for at least this game against pass-happy NMSU. Against power running teams - no. Against pass-happy teams - yes.

Nalani- that is one of my favorite anecdotes. Middle road is good!
November 6th, 2008 at 9:47 am
Nalani, story day?
As told to me by my mom
In ancient Japan the lowly dog had only three legs,
two in front and one in back.
In spite of this handicap, dog worked hard guarding
mankind and his property, he would also assist in the hunt
in spite of his handicap.
One day, one of the seven heavenly gods took notice of dogs
hard work and decided to reward all canines.
The god gave dog a fourth leg so that he may run faster and
fight harder with great balance.
To this day, the dog shows his appreciation to the gods by
always lifting the gifted leg so he does not soil it when he pees.

November 6th, 2008 at 9:59 am
Pass rushing from the inside utilizes a different skillset than what a DE normally uses, I hope Maka got a lot of reps in a short time to prepare himself for battle in the trenches.
However, I feel that Maka will adapt to DT much easier than being a LB in open space.
November 6th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Quentin Beaver's right calf muscle is worth 35 electoral votes.
November 6th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Kazz,
Q.B.'s left calf muscle voted for Obama, hence the landslide victory.
November 6th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Having more speed on defense has definately helped UH to put pressure on the QB's and get runners on the outisde but I also think that is one of the reasons they have a hard time stopping the run up the middle. They have "smaller" guys there and we don't have a big body to plug up the inside.
That's why I was surprised Fresno (among other teams) went away from running up the middle. They were having success but when they tried running outside the tackles, we were able to stop them.
November 6th, 2008 at 10:23 am
Kazz-
Then you haven't seen many calves.
November 6th, 2008 at 10:26 am
LasVegas - loved the story. Made me laugh.
Speaking of calves, we used to joke in Na Leo that our back up band had the biggest calves (all stocky local guys) and that we hired them just so they would make our legs look skinnier on stage. Ha.
November 6th, 2008 at 10:31 am
Nalani-
Great story. That's a good analogy to make.
A-Joe-
The project's coming along fine, thanks.
I have faith in what ever Coach Mac does to build the team. Keeping GA @ QB is a good start. Pilares needs to be used as much as possible. When are we going to see more of Q.B. I wonder.
November 6th, 2008 at 10:36 am
I can't wait for the play when Funaki lines up at slot or RB, gets the ball, shows pass, freezes defenders and runs thirty yards for a TD. It could happen. We'll just wait and see...
Las Vegas-

November 6th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Stretch,
I always thought that the reason for those big runs up the middle
was because of the DTs aggressiveness and the team-wide speed
that caused them to over pursue and/or bite on counter plays.
I also thought the DL keyed on what the guards initially did at the snap a little too well and ended up out of position for a few bad luck plays.
November 6th, 2008 at 10:44 am
I can just picture Quentin with 2 baby cows under his thighs.

November 6th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Speed is good but you still gotta execute, know your assignment, be in position, wrap up the ball carrier, and make the tackle. Easier said than done so that's why I said it.
Anyone planning to go to Bay View a little early to try and hit golf balls?
November 6th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Good morning Tsaikos....gotta esme today...
Good to hear the changeup on D. Hopefully, that will help this weekend.
Also, belated conratulations to DPK and Sweety....
Las Vegas - MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
November 6th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Morning, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.
Maka sounds like a good move to me. He's stronger than his 270 pounds may indicate, but has linebacker speed, which we've been lacking all season on the line edges.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Good move Coach Mc. D starting to look more like the Steelers than the Niners (my team). Now if they can match the Steelers speed and pursuit, look out!!!
November 6th, 2008 at 11:06 am
LV - thanks for clarification on that dog story, I always thought that 4th leg was there to help them go #2. It would be hard to balance on one back leg and concentrate at the same time.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:09 am
Whitey san,

Looking forward to your next visit.

I think Kazz has a "man crush" on Quentin Beaver. I know he's mentioned Mr. Beaver on many occassions.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Nalani - The problem I have with that zen story is that the old man let's time dictate destiny whereas the Warriors can control their own destiny. The Warriors can't take the wait and see attitude. They need to...well we all know what they need to do.

Plus no such thing as one constipated dog.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:16 am
lv - Let me tell you when I give my dogs beef soup bones filled with marrow they get constipated but in the long run it is mess that's easy to clean up.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Hi, Nalani,
I'm glad you've become a Tsaiko. My wife is an absolute fan of your group. The last 10 years we've lived on Maui, she made sure that we'd never miss one of your concerts and I always enjoyed taking her.
I like your posts alot. Brings a nice perspective to the blog and your Aloha shines through in everything you say. We've lost a gigi, but we've gained a Nalani.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Stretch - funny you would say that. I was thinking the same thing because a few weeks ago my dog had a paw injury and couldn't use her back paw. The first time she tried to go, she almost fell over. It was comical and sad at the same time until she finally figured it out. Wish I would have had the cam-corder for that moment!
Nalani and Las Vegas...thanks for the stories...
Aloha everyone...can't wait for game day!!!
November 6th, 2008 at 11:24 am
Homey,
IDK about that beef marrow.
Our babies eat mostly Pedigreed products.
Almost everything that comes out reminds
me of a warm, pliable tootsie roll bar.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:25 am
And the wise men of the blog ponder defensive speed and dog poop...
November 6th, 2008 at 11:29 am
last week we needed 11 cornerbacks on D. Maybe one of them would've gotten lucky and catch the USU QB!
November 6th, 2008 at 11:29 am
last week we needed 11 cornerbacks on D. Maybe one of them would've gotten lucky and catch the USU QB!
November 6th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Thanks FloridaTed. Very nice.
Homey, I thought the story spoke more to us fans than to the team. The team and the coaches gotta make stuff happen for SURE!!! But us fans maybe shouldn't get so upset at the stuff we see as bad (losing to SJSU and some already want to fire Coach Mac?) and get so high at the stuff we see as good (ie beating Fresno and then shocked when we lose to Boise) because we don't know what's around the corner? That's kind of how I took it.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:30 am
lv - The bones are for cleaning their teeth, still sparkling white...hmmmm maybe jm#### should gnaw on some bones...JUST KIDDING!!!
Tootsie roll huh, small kine dog.

aloha
November 6th, 2008 at 11:32 am
hiya!
xs-homey... the story, the way I heard it, was more like - "how do you know it's so good/bad?" Meaning, time will bring perspective.
Kinda like when Pride. says about how you perceive yourself after a win/loss -vs- how things really are.
ahhh. we dunno nuttin. We jes do our bes'!
btw- pls start calling me M-Liz... the XL is getting too big and I need to slim down...
November 6th, 2008 at 11:36 am
Nalani - oh! That perspective! Well in that case you are spot on! You know me, I take the team perspective from the coaches and players. No wonder why my wife says, well many people say, that I think weird.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:41 am
Interesting that this paper says that the UH win and close loss to Fresno State isn't enough to save Utah State coach Brent Guy's job...they also have to win or stay close to BSU on Saturday.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:42 am
las vegas,
Funny story about the dog! Trouble is, female dogs don't lift their leg to pee...
November 6th, 2008 at 11:42 am
XLiz - okay, I will call you MLiz from now on, if I remember. The xs-homey name isn't doing anything for me since I gained another couple pounds...
About that story, I like your version too! I just took it as a wait and see thing by the team instead of taking things into their own hands. I guess once a competitor always a competitor...That's why I'm gonna go to Toy's R Us and buy me a new set of Playskool golf clubs and kick some butt on Saturday!
November 6th, 2008 at 11:43 am
I know that this news made Bulla and the Best happy.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Ball State is seriously hoping for a BCS spot. With all of the attention that BSU, Utah, etc. have gotten, it would be surprising if every of those teams lost a game and Ball State somehow got into a BCS game. A *MAC* team.
If Ball State somehow got into the top 12 of the BCS rankings, then they could be picked for the 2nd spot for a non-BCS conference team (assuming that BCS conference teams couldn't fill all the spots) even if another team like BSU or Utah was ranked ahead of them.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Garret - My female dog lifts her rear leg if she shishi's next to a pole, tree, hydrant, bush, trash can...I suppose it's so that she can be accurate and shishi directly on the spot she smelled.

I'm going to search for RGM news now. It appears that his team lost their last game, but RGM was one of the few players who did well in the game. The rest of the team apparently took their low-rated opponent lightly.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:56 am
Garret - Must be because my dog is taller and bigger and just doesn't fit well next to a tree or pole. Or maybe she has male tendencies? You know, something like James where he likes to sometimes sit on a toilet to shishi.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:57 am
RGM took a short pass, broke a few tackles, and turned it into a 67-yard TD...we saw him do that with UH and it is great that he did that in the CFL! That is a way to open some eyes of the scouts.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:59 am
More praise for RGM--he sure put up good stats in his last game! It looks like the Vancouver Sun used a nickname for RGM that I hadn't seen before.
November 6th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
It is sad that the loss for RGM's team cost them home field advantage in the playoffs.
November 6th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
RGM's coach talked about his big game.

Late Good Morning to All:
A quick medical update: DrDoc has been moved out of ICU and back into the general medical wing at Kaiser; however, he still has an irregular heart beat so I don't know what will be happening next.
Things would be easier if the closest family member were 50 miles instead of 5,000 miles away. Trying to deal with a sick dog, an elderly cat, a 20-year-old car which has a new ailment every week, ticked-off neighbors who don't like our over-grown yard & have filed a complaint with our landlord, and making sure that my clients are satisfied with my work keeps me running at high speed.
Anyhow - back to sports - give a shout-olut this afternoon for the Wahine volleyball team: Hawaii at Boise State 3:45 pm 1420-AM. See Ferd's column for what's at stake.
As for the football team, que sera, sera. The players and the coaches know what has to be done and who's available to do it. Sideline sitters, press box pundits, and Monday Morning quarterbacks are not part of the team.
See you much much later.
November 6th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Okay, that is the last of the articles I can find about RGM that I hadn't already posted before. Congratulations to him for earning his spot with his big game! RGM was signed during a period of time where CFL teams had 2 extra spots on their practice roster, and those extra roster spots lasted only 2 weeks. So, within those 2 weeks he had to prove he was better than the players on their active roster. He did that in the two weeks of practice--I'm glad he was healthy, since if he was injured they would have just cut him.
Then, when they moved RGM to the active roster, the papers said that it was just for the rest of the regular season, and one of the injured players would be back for the playoffs and RGM would be let go then. However, he's done so well that now he'll be on their playoff roster and getting playing time!
So, congratulations to RGM for *earning* his roster spot the hard way! Remember, each CFL team only has a limited number of spots for non-Canadians, so US citizens have to be much better than the Canadian alternatives to get a spot. And RGM didn't have training camp or 2/3 of the season to be with the team, but they will be using him in the playoffs.
November 6th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
I'm going back to work now. I just got back from my lunch and wanted to post.
By the way, I *love* it when Lori gets mystery shopping jobs for restaurants. My job today was to drive her to the restaurant and EAT. We went to an Italian place and our food will be reimbursed plus we get an additional $7 after Lori writes the report. Plus, I brought home a large pizza that is being reimbursed! Free lunch and free pizza...
November 6th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Wow... well it was nice knowing Coach Guy then...
November 6th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

1. Run a course on a basketball court in 21.6 seconds or less (appox. 180 ft)
2. Bench press 68% of your body weight one time
3. Run 300 meters in 82.8 seconds or less

For some reason, I got really jet-lagged on this return trip. Maybe it was because coming back from Utah became a 13-hour trek. Or maybe it's because that "Ferd" made us leave the hotel at 5 a.m. (2 a.m. Hawaii time) last Sunday. Grrrrrr.
Next week it should pick up. We'll have some chat guests. Plus, the Princess rejoins us.
November 6th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
But thanks for everyone for picking up the slack.
And how awesome is it that we have Garret to hunt down stories for us, and a Hoku winner to tell us stories?

The MWC's hopes to become a BCS Conference will have to wait until at least 2011. That would mean the earliest they would need BSU to boost their power rating would be after the 2010 season. They also might be able to compute their chances to attain BCS status after the 2010 season and figure out whether or not they would need BSU or some other team to help their power rating, or if it would not be possible for them.
This article also outlines how the WAC or any other conference would need to improve to look for BCS Conference status.

The San Jose Mercury-News just published the GPAs and SAT scores for the football teams in the Pac-10. This is their recruit's admissions data.
Wow, the average football player entering Stanford had a 3.63 GPA in high school while those going to USC, Washington State, Arizona, or Arizona State had a 2.8 or lower GPA in high school.

The backup center (he's played in 7 games this season) for Texas was apparently upset after Obama won the election...so he changed his Facebook status to something quite unfortunate. He was kicked off the team today. Now Texas has a freshman who is the only game-ready backup for the center and guard positions. The player apologized, but it is too late for his Texas career.

Thank you for your interesting perspective. The only game I have seen Utah State play is the one against Hawaii. plus I saw highlights of the game vs. Fresno State, so you can understand how I would have a much more positive impression of Utah State than those people who watched every game.

November 6th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Wreck - Yep, like I mentioned, still get 3 more home games to go!
November 6th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
At least the apology seems sincere and complete to me. It is too late for his Texas career, but some other school will take him as a transfer. If nothing else, he could write apologies for politicians and celebrities when they mess up...
November 6th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Okay, the guy gives a sincere apology, should the University and team take him back?

Having previously coached at both Notre Dame and Stanford, Ty Willingham noted differences in the sideline conversations of his players. At Notre Dame, the players discussed football schemes, routes, hand techniques and the likes, but at Stanford, the players' conversations centered on their calculus and biochemistry assignments and the symbolisms in Macbeth and King Lear.

NOPE.
November 6th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
It is my belief that people's FIRST reactions to something tends to be an accurate reflection of their true philosophy regarding the situation to which they are reacting to.
So that former Texas player can apologize as much as he wants and he seems to be a talented writer so he should focus on his writing to earn a living.

Well, at the time, I was looking at political science/law, so I got a lot of stuff from schools like Washington University at St. Louis. I wonder, if I had showed more interest in mathematics, whether schools like Cal Tech would have sent me stuff.
Then again, if I were to go to a top-notch school like that, I'd absolutely go crazy. UH's math department is pretty good as it is, although we are slow in some trends. (It's about time we started developing a program in mathematical biology, and we're only now working with Shidler to develop a financial engineering program.)
November 6th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
BTW, the head ref in the Utah-TCU game was the head ref for our game against Utah St.
November 6th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Use of the UH "H" logo.
Over at Sports Hawaii I saw a link of several high schools on the mainland using OUR "H" logo for their football team.
Here is one:
http://www.hillcresthuskies.net/football/08/brighton/index.html
Now I know A LOT of high schools use college and pro logos for their own (i.e. Farrington - UGA, Green Bay), but I mean this is insane... A lot of the college and pro logos almost have no cultural significance or do they directly reflect the culture of the native people of that area.
Our "H" does.
It's just unsettling to see them wearing that on their jerseys and their parents with shirts that say "Hillcrest Football" with OUR "H" logo on it.
I mean they're the Huskies so shouldn't they use some generic dog logo like the hundreds of other schools that call themselves the "Huskies"?
I wonder how many of those kids or parents actually think that logo is exclusive to them?

Nope. But they just nailed TCU with an intentional grounding when there was a receiver plausibly in the area. Other than that call, they are keeping the flags in their pockets.
November 6th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
*sputtering*
Kazz! Gasp! I took a look at the link to the school that's using our H logo. Yikes! No, no, no. That is about 78 kinds of wrong. How do we make that stop?

Tangent, but speaking of Facebook ...
I notice that on Facebook there are about 7 or 8 user profiles (as opposed to fan pages) all labeled Colt Brennan, with football pictures as avatars. So at least half a dozen of them have to be impostors. Horrible people with nothing better to do, I guess.
November 6th, 2008 at 5:57 pm

November 6th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
SteveM,
Did you shoot us an e-mail within the past couple hours? Because if you did, I don't think I got it.
Anywho, I wanna watch the TCU-Utah game but the only internet stream I can find for it keeps going in and out, making it difficult to watch. That game is somewhere in the 4th quarter right now.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
Maverick, not sure. I've seen all kinda fake user profiles on FB. Look up any celebrity — you'll see multiple user profiles. My guess is that those sickos maybe get a kick out of receiving the gushy messages and "wall" comments really intended for the celebs. Dunno.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
So TV star, how come I never see your commercial yet? You gotta send me a copy, or put it up on YouTube.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
Kazz-
Our refs just had the worst non-call of pass interference EVER. TCU was on D and knocked down a Utah receiver in what looked like an easy call...easy for anyone but those refs.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
... I've also seen a coupla impostor profiles for Colt on MySpace. One of them is really stupid — it claims to be written by Colt, but makes him out to be ... well, not a gentleman, let's say. Pretty obviously a fake.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
JaSON ... stop it. You're being silly.
Actually, we haven't shot it yet. Will be taped later this month.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:12 pm

10 minutes left and TCU has the ball trying to run the clock. 10-6 TCU.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Gotta go cook for the keiki. Whooshing out for now ...
November 6th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
The next question is..."what do we propose the University do about this infringment on our 'H' logo?"
Do we:
1 - File a law suit and demand they remove it from everything they have it on? (No, unrealistic).
2 - Charge the 'beejeezus' out of their use already? (Might make them scale back and stop when we keep adding future charges & restrictions).
3 - Send a death squad to take out the infidels. (My vote)
November 6th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Ok,
E-mail sent to John McNamara cc'd to Jim Donovan, Marilyn Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano and Carl Clapp.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Thanks 99 club!
This stream is getting really buggy. I believe the sheer number of people viewing this stream (over 2,100) is wreaking havoc on it:

We could of sent out our Defense squad last week to that Hillcrest school since Jordan, Utah was right down the street.
Imagine the looks of these young'ns and faculty staff with the REAL "H" logo guys showing up on their doorsteps.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Do I sense a momentum shift in the TCU-Utah game?
November 6th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Hmmm...Esme - Esme - I used to know someone by that name! Eons ago when the earth was still cooling, and the GEICO guys roamed the planet....yes...uh-huh, Esme. I often wondered what became of her. Are you a relative?

November 6th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Esme: I was talking to Wreck about the commercial.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
The thing is it's a high school and their not exactly pumping out merchandise so I don't think there is any $$$$ to sue for. The only shirts they have on sale that I could find are "Hillcrest High" shirts with their husky logo.
The point is if we had generic logos like UCLA, USC, West Virginia, Stanford's "S", or Georgia's "G", then I wouldn't feel so offended. However our "H" is Hawaii's and I don't think I need to elaborate why it is OURS.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
The official Limo he can ride while in Las Vegas already has the *Poi Dog* license plate on it!...Right LV??
November 6th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Good call D1
How appropriate for the Obama family, and that doggie will live longer than any pure breed.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
Oh boy... I forgot in that sports hawaii thread there were at least two other schools that use our "H" also...
Lemme go find 'em now!

Was it tonight that Viliami Nauahi is going to be on the Wheel of Fortune?? I think it was him, right??
November 6th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Ok so there is Holt High School in Alabama and a "CHS" school in Montana that "uses" OUR "H" logo.
I'm having a hardtime trying to confirm which CHS in Montana it is as there are a few.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
Looks Utah hangs on to win, 13-10.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:37 pm

November 6th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Just saw this on TV:
Tonight on the KGMB9 10 o'clock news Liz Chun has a special "behind the scenes" look at UH's last and long road trip of 2008.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
Use of the "H" logo.
I think it is a tribute to the real UH Warriors that others are using the logo. While they may not truly understand the cultural meaning behind the various graphics that consitute the "H" logo they probably do recognize the strength and growing legacy of the "H".
I do not view it as an insult but, rather, as a tribute to what we and our Warriors have achieved over the past few years.
Moreover, it brings further recognition to our Warriors and the University of Hawai'i simply because the "H" logo is presented in public, in various locations, and more often. It is my hope the young men and women, staff and community members wear it with pride and distinction befitting the honor our Warriors have fought so hard to earn.
And, yes. Assuming the "H" logo is copyrighted a cease and desist suit can be filed. But, what would that gain? A dislike for our Warriors? A distrust? A loathing?
No. I think we should be proud and honored others are trying to emulate what our Warriors have accomplished!
November 6th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Okay Kazz you can yell at me now.
But, why not try to educate them about the cultural sugnificance? They would understand the three triangles.

Utah won. Their next tough game is BYU at home. If Utah wins out then the best Boise can hope for is the Roadies Truck Stop Humanitarian Bowl on Dec 30th. Gotta love the BCS.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Stretch: Tomorrow,.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
d1 . . .
I agree. Some times the kids and adults do not even say "thank you" when something is given/provided/done. They simply walk away as if it was their right to have it given/provided/done. In those cases I always out loud, "You are welcome!" Most will stop and say sheepishly, "Thank you." Most just keep walking away.
I do not understand the feeling of entitlement people have. Amazing.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Wafan,
With our logo being unique, it makes me more curious as to why they chose to use it.
I mean MAYBE they MIGHT know what it is all about, but my gut feeling is they thought it looked "cool" and then they took it.
Either way, let's see what UH admin wants to do with the info I e-mailed them. Now IF they already know about it somehow and they don't feel they should do anything then fine. If UHAD feels they should pursue other actions, then so be it.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Jason - yeah I figured that out since he wasn't on today. I can't believe I am going to do it but I will DVR Wheel of Fortune tomorrow and check it out later.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Too rich for my blood. Good old Costco and TOP Foods is where I will shop.
November 6th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Stretch: Me too. Well, not DVR, I use the good old VCR.
That reminds me, I better watch the Utah State game before I start taping over it.
November 6th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
I believe the Hillcrest Huskies use the "H" logo as a tribute to their late coach who died suddenly of a heart attack in 2006. He was from Hawaii and I think a grad of UH. I'll try to find out more, but here's one article on Coach Bruce Takena:
http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=835768
November 6th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Kazz . . .
I agree. The UH has to make the final determination. I just think it is exciting to have our "H" logo seen else where.
Yeah. It might be because it looks cool. But, I am certain it also brings additional interest in our Warriors from those areas. Even if they are not Warrior fans they know which university it represents.
Heck. Take a look at the fighting Crusader SLS uses. It was "designed" waaay back in the late 60's or early 70's. Does it look vaguely familiar? No?
Take a look at the fighting Irish guy. Same pose. Same stance. Shoot, they even faced the same direction when the fighting Crusader first came out.
If any university could have afforded, at that time, to go after a logo infringement it would be Notre Dame.
Most universities probably tend to have just a few restrictions on the use of their logos. I am guessing most are pleased they are being given free publicity and exposure.
I do recall Texas A and M went after the Seahawks for the use of the copyrighted "12th Man". The Seahawks raise a "12" flag just before the game. A and M filed suit. Thankfully, they lost. If they had won, then every other football team in the US would be banned from using the term "12th Man".
November 6th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Takena=Takeno
November 6th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
In other photos the Hillcrest players wore patches on their jerseys of the Japanese Flag to honor their late coach.
However, I cannot find anything on the late Bruce Takena's connection to Hawaii/UH or as to why Hillcrest uses the UH "H".

I would have voted for that.
November 6th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Maybe we should send our recruiters to those schools that sport the Warrior "H" and have them give them a history and culture lesson and have their best athletes sign on the letter or intent line... football.. basketball... baseball..etc..
November 6th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
sorry... "letter or intent" should read.. "letter of intent"...

Congratulations to another victory for the Wahine volleyball team. (that's an up).

Good Aloha Friday morning everyone!!!

Dang. I just did not want it to come to this but after your last communique I have been urged to implement MAD as the last resort.

I wonder what happened to the other bloggers from the Seattle area. After last season they disappeared.
Hey people! If you are lurking come join us!!! Honest we do no bite (except for Homey's poodles) and really do not cause any bodily harm (except for Kekoa's death squads).

I wonder why there are so many accidents over the past several days. The other day a truck driver ran into an overpass, today a truck and several cars are stuck under the Seattle Convention Center with fuel leaking all over the place (closed I-5 South bound), and lots of cars just going off the road or rolling without any particular reason.
Dang. I-5 looks like the Hawai'i highways after HPD closes them down for a fender-bender. Nothing like a miles long parking lot to get your morning started!
November 7th, 2008 at 4:48 am
Funny how the news and weather people say Hawai'i.
Ha-why-ee
Ha-wa-ee
Ha-whye-ee (Lori Matsukawa does this one)
Now if the sports casters would work on the pronunciation of the Japanese names on the M's roster that would be a good thing.
Itchy-row is the most common. I did not know he had eggs that itched. Heaven forbid if they ever mispronounce a Hispanic name, though. How about
Martin-eaz?
Jew-ann?
And, let us not even get started on the Polynesian names. Geez!
Silly people.
November 7th, 2008 at 4:50 am
