The recruiting game
November 21st, 2008
By Stephen Tsai
By Stephen Tsai
In previous years, the Warriors rarely brought in prospects during the season. Most of the visits were scheduled in the three weekends leading to the February signing date.
But that's changed under Greg McMackin, and recruits will be visiting this weekend.
The in-season visits allow the prospects to join the team in game preparation. That way if they choose to attend UH, there won't be any surprises.
While some players have been very good hosts — take a bow, Rocky Savaiigaea, Keao Monteilh, Inoke Funaki and Adam Leonard — the new strategy allows more than 100 Warriors to serve as hosts.

The early recruiting seems to be paying off. Hopefully the early commits will stick to their guns and be part of the Warrior Nation next season. It's all pretty exciting.

Top 5?
So, did Herr Benson say anything worth reporting?

Coach Mack gets an A+ on the early recruiting effort. If JJ were still here, I'm guessing we wouldn't have as many verbals as we do now.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:34 am
Made the top ten?
The synthetic turf hasn't arrived yet for the Ching field - so I understand.
Hopefully it is on the way with the Christmas trees!

November 21st, 2008 at 9:37 am
Any hints to who may be visiting this weekend
November 21st, 2008 at 9:42 am
copying from previous blog in case get any Hawaiian Air people lurking....
To me, that’s BS . They are ripping off the people of Hawaii because they know that people will be going to the game. To their credit, they brought the fares down a little but still higher than normal. I understand they are in business to make money but I wish they would be fair to everyone. Their plane is going to be full and they will make money if they charge their regular fare.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:47 am
Is Rocky still 100% when it comes to recruiting??
November 21st, 2008 at 9:49 am
It takes two weeks from the time the turf arrives at UH for them to finish the job. Hopefully it will arrive very very soon. It would have been nice for the Warriors to have the field ready before the first recruits came visiting. I was really hopeful that it would be ready for the Warriors to practice on before the Cincinnati game. They will need every edge they can get to prepare for that one.

al,
I'm only an interim retiree...still looking for a job in Hawai'i nei. Would love to get a job at UH. I don't think they give their staff discounts on tickets, though. We got a small price break at NAU.
Wish I could have gotten to the Skydome at NAU to see the new RealTurf (I think that's what it's called.) Bulla & Lyn got to check it out. Hope Ching-Cooke field gets done soon.
Can anyone go to the Na Koa lunch on Monday? Maybe I'll go, so I can meet Garret.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:30 am
you see....you sit too far away for any binoculars to have any effect. go to francis' camera shop and pick up a telescope for better results. just one word of caution do not stray away to the north endzone to ogle the rainbow dancers, your boss going to whack you on the head.
then, she'll tell you she going home. she going get the flock out of there.

The rain has started here on Kauai. I hope the planes don't get backed up too much. A few years back, it was raining so hard w/ lightning that the planes couldn't land. I don't feel like getting stuck here on Kauai tonight.

in regards to the flat out "price" the OMNI charter might be the best way to go but its a tight fit in that 757...
Half of their OMNI charters are already booked and the price has already jumped to a low of 899 to mid 900's
I smell collusion....
November 21st, 2008 at 10:44 am
There are other options to getting to Vegas for the game at a cheaper rate but there has to be a layover somewhere.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:50 am
MeiLing - faculty/staff do get discounts on season tix for games, or at least they used to. Back in the early 90's (BC - before child), I used to FB season tix and we sat in Sec H (20 yd line), lower section (what color is that?).
November 21st, 2008 at 10:50 am
ralph....i believe it was reported that one of the conditions of employment when hiring coach mack was a promise to drastically increase his recruiting budget. which apparently did happen under hinshaw/donovan.
hawaiian air also chimed in with complimentary flights for the staff for the purpose of recruiting.
i am not sure if the maloof brothers contribution is also being spent this year.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:51 am
MeiLing,
It would be great to meet you and other Tsaikos at the Na Koa lunch! Plus, that way the money helps UH's program instead of just going to some restaurant like a normal cattle call.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:53 am
stretch...there is no darkside to kauai is there?
ok, gotta go now.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:53 am
Ralph,
Like Al said, UH's recruiting budget has been increased *significantly*, especially when you count the free flights on Hawaiian Airlines--that wouldn't have happened without the Sugar Bowl. For those who say that JJ should have been doing this before, the old budget (thanks to HF) wouldn't have allowed it.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:55 am
lu'au na'au...mmmmmm
How's Dan Kelly's kicking at practice? Hope he's worked out the problems he's had recently. I have a feeling FGs are going to be critical to a win in wet field conditions.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:57 am
d1shima- ok. I'll bring my raincoat. #2 son is home with instructions to watch for leaks and flooding. During the 40 days/nights a couple years ago, we had to sandbag. This time I've asked him to dig a trench around the house to the storm drain. Tsai. Well. This will be a good test for our new solar heater and Dish antenna!
HiHo!

Do retirees count?
November 21st, 2008 at 10:59 am

Garret,
See you at lunch!
Gotta Esme... see y'all tomorrow!
November 21st, 2008 at 11:00 am
Yup, retirees count because I KNOW they will tell the current leadership to stop ripping off the locals.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:02 am
The early recruiting is something that I've been asking for for years, and it sure has paid off. Although djmitcho's point that this would never have happened under JJ doesn't take into account that the recruiting world has changed and *every* school has been forced to recruit early because everyone else does it.
For example, JJ reached 22 commits I think two months ago and they have already begun offering players for the 2010 class.
The big difference between Mac and JJ is that Mac does a great job with home visits and JJ stopped doing them. That is a BIG difference. Plus, Tony Tuioti's excellent job as recruiting coordinator (something that HF never gave the budget for) will put UH at a different level in organization and coordination.
UH recruits at Kahuku much better than before...but the change in head coaches might be part of the reason. It doesn't hurt that the son of the head coach of Kahuku is a valuable contributor to the Warriors...and didn't he join when JJ was coach?
Local recruiting in general is better than it has been since JJ's 2nd recruiting class (his first full year of recruiting at UH since he had only a short time after he was hired for his first class)...and this is Mac's 2nd recruiting class and first full year of recruiting as head coach. I credit all of the coaches for the great recruiting this year. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the entire state rallied around the Warriors last season and all local recruits lived through that and saw how much attention their friends, family, and neighbors gave to UH. My dream would be for Mac to keep this level of recruiting going, avoiding the dip in local recruiting that JJ had after his 2nd recruiting class.

So what would you say would be an 'ideal' mix in terms of percentages between "local" and "other"?
I wonder what the percentages are at some of the more storied programs?

RE: Ching Field.
I've been seeing large rolled up items on the field. Of course I saw them at night so it's hard to say what those things are but they do not look like the turf itself.
I can't wait to see it when it is done.
Also, looks like some work is being done to the UH intramural sports office. Last night I saw that they are renovating it.
THINGS ARE HAPPENING!!!!!
November 21st, 2008 at 11:14 am
madeinhawaii,
The ideal for me is to get the best players no matter where they are, but if players are equal then I'd take the local player because he's going to have a support system in place and the motivation to play in front of family and friends. Some mainland recruits get homesick and transfer out, so any ties go to the local player in my opinion.
There are a LOT of excellent players in Hawaii high schools, and keeping them home is a lot cheaper on the recruiting budget than recruiting a mainland player. If the top local players stay home, then that saves the coaches time (much less travel time) to be able to recruit more effectively the other players. When I talk about keeping local players home, I don't mean just anyone, I mean the type of recruits Mac is getting now that are wanted by Pac-10 and other programs. Those type of recruiting wins are the key to excellence!
There are some positions that UH will have to recruit from the mainland. There aren't many 6'5"+ offensive tackles in Hawaii high schools and not many 6'+ CBs, for example.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:15 am
Keeping local players home also should help with attendance. The family and friends of that player will go to the games, and many from that player's high school will go too.

November 21st, 2008 at 11:20 am
SDSU students are fighting against the fee hike to support the Athletic Department. Problem is, if they don't raise the fees on the students, SDSU will not have enough money to remain in D-IA because the football attendance has been pitiful.
I feel very badly for SDSU students. The student fee to support their Athletic Department used to be $30 per year. The school proposed to increase that from $30 per year to $190 per year, but the students voted down the increase...and SDSU's President overruled the election results and increased the fee to $190! Now, they want to increase the fee to $350 per student per year, another $160 increase...and SDSU's President will do it even if the students protest and vote it down.

Stretch ~ Duffer's been telling 'em...they all get deaf e'ah wen coming to kala! Greed is a terrible thing, and is the 1st thing that comes to mind when I think of HAL.

My daughter is home from preschool...I've got to go. Tomorrow we'll be in Pasadena and Sunday we'll be in Hawaii! I probably won't be on the blog much after today.
I went to get the Blackberry Storm today and it is being shipped to Hawaii since they were sold out at 7:35am (people lined up starting at 4:30am!). They didn't charge me any tax since they are shipping it out of state, so I saved a ton! I hope that I can get used to blogging with it, as it will make it much easier to get to the blog wherever I am.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:33 am
Garret-
Awhile back, you mentioned an idea Texas employs that I thought would be something UH should seriously explore. It was about setting up campus visits for juniors in high school where they'd have to pay their way to get here. That would be an excellent tool to use for local blue chip recruits.

November 21st, 2008 at 11:41 am
Maybe we Tsaiko's could get involved one day to sponser a "Meet The Pros" day at UH SSC Banquet room for a luncheon. The recruits could have lunch with former UH players who made it to the NFL and exchange "pleasantries."

Decisions, decisions... $7-900 for Las Vegas and/or $749 for 11-day Mexican Riviera/Sea of Cortez cruise out of San Francisco on Sunday, Sept 20...
Been 429 days since my last cruise and I am losing weight
Guess you know which way I'm leaning. Can still go to LAS but catch a flight out at 0600 after the game to SFO...
Been looking at this cruise for a month and don't know how long the price will hold. Might go up or down yet...but the "bird in hand"... I'm about ready to book. Then look at air with LAS stopover soon.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:03 pm
SteveM - you should go to the Seattle game on Sept 12, take a cruise for the week, then go over to Vegas for the Sept 19 game. You kill 3 birds and a credit card with one stone.

So who is this Italia Crichton, DE out of Cal that supposedly has an offer from Hawaii?
November 21st, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Is he coming for a visit?
November 21st, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Stretch, sadly no $ and no major ships that fit that scenario. But if both games were scheduled a week later, there are 4 ships that could take you to Los Angeles from Seattle/Vancouver as they exit the Alaska season. We are one week out of sync for the cruise ship migration south. Guess you must settle for the land casinos in between games...
November 21st, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Any rain on Kauai yet?
Wish it would just pour tonight so that we won't get it as bad tomorrow for the game. I don't have to worry about during the game...just the walk to the stadium.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:47 pm
OK if I went to the WSU and the UNLV game then I would have to nix the Raider game. Don't think that Frank would like that...me putting the WSU game ahead of his Raiders.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Has there been any more info on the Boyd group package, for the 09 UNLV game?

Interesting that graduation rates are up for college athletes but athletes are taking the same major at their schools more now. Are graduation rates up because schools are pushing athletes to take easier majors that won't be as useful after graduation?
November 21st, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I know that A-House has wished for for something like this to happen in the WAC. The ACC actually noticed the mistakes by the refs before the losing coach could complain to the conference about the refs! Karl Benson would never be that proactive!
November 21st, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Hmmm according to Sportsbow it looks like Safety, Stanjarivus McKay is Colorado bound.
Let's just hope he doesn't drag his other, Hawaii Commit, players along with him.

November 21st, 2008 at 1:23 pm
mckay to Colorado, that's too bad. wish da kid luck and see him in 2010, have a sinking feeling we don't see any LBP commits come LOI day. that's okay, we'll move on with what we got who wants to be warriors.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:27 pm
wow thanx for dat article, garrett. would've never dreamed UM would leave da gators for da golden domers but after reading that article it makes sense. i really really hope for lots of rain tonite so as there ain't much tomorrow.

Drizzling in Kalaheo but the doppler shows a lot of rain along the Napali Coast and North Shore.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:57 pm
It's pouring rain!
November 21st, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Garret:
You are correct in your post #73. Benson is no leader for he will do everything, but the RIGHT thing whether is scheduling football games to holding his "officials" coordinator responsible. Where is the "MORAL COURAGE" to stand up and discipline underlings. If he cannot do it, then he should resign.
And we wonder why the WAC fails to draw attention to itself for being out front in integrety and being a model conference that should be considered for BCS consideration.
November 21st, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Hi folks!
Since everyone is reporting about the weather on their perspective island....Here on Maui, it is humid, humid, humid...feels like it's gonna rain but nada drop. Can smell and feel it in the air.
Shane Victorino is making the rounds here on the island. We'll be attending a fundraiser tomorrow for his alma mater, St. Anthony School, where the auctions will include Victorino autographed shirts, balls, caps, pictures. Shane, give more so we can build a gym, athletic complex, swimming pool, field, or even a school building and name it after you. Your old school needs you. By the way, he won't be making an appearance because he has another event to attend. Awww.
November 21st, 2008 at 2:12 pm
A-House,
At least you have an example now of how a different conference (ACC) disciplined refs that messed up during a game. It can be done... but I don't think Benson will do it.
By the way, I haven't heard back from you via e-mail so I assume you don't need the DVD/VCR with coax input anymore?
November 21st, 2008 at 2:13 pm

merry maids from honolulu dropped by to the apartment for the boys, it was mr/mrs bulla impersonating the merry maids....but all for love, even the brillo pad on the stove action, haha
GOOD LUCK to the Warriors tomorrow night, could be a wet one, but on the field turf, guaranteed it won't be a muddy one.
a hui hou gang......

It's not raining, but it's very humid here in Salt Lake. It was not raining, but it was very humid in the Ward Center area two hours ago. It was not raining, but it was very humid at UH four hours ago.
I bought a pair of Under Armour shorts, so let's see if I can do a good Kazz impersonation.

mih.....i think there is more to the list and some that are actually not on the list. but, that is a secret only tsai and mack could tell.
i found out a few years ago that you can't believe everything that you read, especially when it comes to recruiting.
case in point, a few years ago when dick tomey took over san jose st. he was offering everyone we had on our list because he had no time to research. therefore, there are times that we don't list players for that same reason.
ever wonder why last year and to a degree this year, many whom we listed smu also went after? so, it is wise not to disclose all that you have. kind of like playing poker you see.
November 21st, 2008 at 4:04 pm
a good example of what al is saying is greg alexander last year. they pretty much kept that a secret till LOI day.
November 21st, 2008 at 4:09 pm
letsgo...they found him just two days before loi day.
November 21st, 2008 at 4:12 pm
but they still kept it quiet till LOI
November 21st, 2008 at 4:12 pm
These were guys already listed on Scout.com ... nothing new.. just summarizing.. but it's nice to know we're looking at players who are all 2 stars and up with a lot of upside..
November 21st, 2008 at 4:20 pm
madeinhawaii,
Every player is basically rated as 2 stars and up. A 1 star rating normally means that the scouting service hasn't reviewed the player yet. Since I trust the coaches' ability to rate players over the scouting services, I actually prefer a 1 star rating over a 2 star rating...but this late in the season there shouldn't be very many 1 star players left who can actually play.

Al,
I think that in most cases this year, SMU had the earlier offer for the players that have interest from both UH and SMU, if we go by the recruiting services. Last year was crazy since SMU did offer UH recruits late, but in most cases those were players from Texas or players who Reinbold recruited. SMU didn't have to use scout or rivals since Reinbold already was in contact with those players.
I wonder what would have happened if Mac had kept Reinbold on his staff until *after* NLI day in February? Wasn't Reinbold under contract through the school year? Mac didn't have to release him early so that he could help someone else recruit...especially since he would go after UH recruits.

UH/UNLV 2009 packages available now.
FYI
rates just in.
email me at: islandestate@hotmail.com
let me know if you are definitely interested and i will send you the info. first come first served.
air packages available via omni charter, hawaiian air, and delta. prices vary by carrier. starting at 869 pax.
all based upon dbl occupancy.
also, game only available.
this is advanced tsaiko only reservations. no wait>
November 21st, 2008 at 4:50 pm
add this to the boydgaming packages
85 for tailgate and endzone ticket
95 for tailgate and sideline ticket
tailgate includes food, beer, softdrinks and transportation
November 21st, 2008 at 5:05 pm
also in regards the boydgaming charter packages on OMNI....there are 4 flight patterns..the thursday to Tuesday one only has approx 75 seats left...There is going to be an AD in Sundays paper so the word is going to get out mainstream come Sunday. The prices are also subject to being "bumped" up after so many people book each particular flight.
November 21st, 2008 at 5:08 pm
I'd choose either game-only package listed above, whichever one that the Tsaikos were going to be in. It would be a shame to have everyone split up with some on the sideline and some in the end zone.
November 21st, 2008 at 5:10 pm
I'm sure that my parents will be at the game, plus my wife and kids will go to Vegas but won't go to the game.

homes,
If it's raining during the tail-gate, is there "shelter" for the grill, or will someone bring a portable grill? I don't have a working oven here to roast the char siu & was hoping to cook it there.
Let me know. If I have to, I'll go to my Mom's to cook it.

November 21st, 2008 at 5:42 pm
It would be great if Isi Sofele was at the game tomorrow! His season ended tonight because his team lost in today's Utah 4A championship game--the team that beat them has won 4 of the last 5 Utah state titles!
In the biggest game of the season against the best team in Utah in his division, Isi had 20 carries for 194 yards and 3 TDs! Isi's team was down 21-0...until Isi ran for 140 yards and 2 TDs in the 2nd quarter! In the 3rd quarter, Isi scored on an 80 yard TD run to put his team ahead 28-21. Unfortunately for Isi's team, the final score was 34-28.

Aloha, Tsaiko Ohana!!
Looks like the Idaho game is going to be real wet. Here is what the City's Department of Emergency Management is saying as of 2:49 pm today
This update is based on a Friday video teleconference with the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
Current conditions are that a surface low continues to build up over the Hawaiian Islands, will cause heavy rains, beginning tonight or early tomorrow.
The greatest threat period will begin in earnest about 24-48 hours and last throughout the weekend, unchanged since yesterday.
The rain should be 3”-6” over a 24 hour period, with locally heavy areas receiving up to 8”-10”, unchanged since yesterday
There will be very little wind associated with this storm, unless the thunderstorms to the far northwest of us begin to move in.
Thunderstorms have developed west of Kauai, but haven’t moved east.
Weather Service is still predicting this to be a heavy storm.
All: Please continue preparatory actions, review plans, keep aware of the current situation through your radio or television, and take action if necessary.

November 21st, 2008 at 8:54 pm
OK, I'm back. Sorry I've been running around all day.
But I can answer a few questions.
Re: Recruiting budget.
J.J. was never told he was limited to $50,000. But he did have an overall budget that was fixed. When all of the essentials were paid for, that left about $50,000 for recruiting. He probably could have moved some money into recruiting. But that would have meant, I dunno, no pens or note pads.
November 21st, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Re: Recruiting lists.
UH doesn't pay attention to those.
It uses its own evaluations to decide on which players to offer.
That, of course, is the danger of recruiting so early. When you get a commitment in October, other schools get interested. It's like dating. Some guys won't ask out a woman whom nobody else is interested in.
November 21st, 2008 at 8:59 pm
One of the guys in the office noticed that a recruit's star rating increased after he verbal'd to UH.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:05 pm
I think UH is done recruiting safeties.
But I heard today they might pick up another quarterback. No, not the Punahou guy. But another one has emerged on the radar.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:08 pm
I hope it doesn't rain again this Saturday, if it does, it'll cost us at least 5000 fans in the stands.
It will be quite an interesting comparison in BigMacks second year to this one. I really think the performance dips are over and we'll have 9 + wins every year from here on out. Am I overly optimistic here?.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:12 pm
I hope they don't over load on QB's, unless they'll find a super gem. I'd rather have too many line men, of which you actually can never have too many, see this year.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:14 pm
FT:
I think things will be interesting next year.
Greg Alexander is finally comfortable with the offense. Malcolm Lane came over to reporters today to praise Alexander for never giving up.
The offense should be OK.
I'm concerned about the defense, especially in the secondary. And it's going to be tough to replace Elimimian and Adam Leonard.
UH also needs to find a punter and holder.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:18 pm
here comes the rain...
here comes the rain.....
November 21st, 2008 at 9:21 pm
this is how the wahine should be playing the vandals
November 21st, 2008 at 9:25 pm
is UH really done recruiting safeties? I hope not cuz i'm not too big on wadsworth or alo. Neither of them have good speed and a lack of speed at the safety position is killing us this year. Hopefully they can land that Mickens kid since it seems Mckay is out of the picture.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Tsai-Meister,
I thought we were pretty set at line backer, even though we lose two great ones, also at DB, aren't we red shirting some good JC's? Off course, a Mouton is also hard to replace, but I think it will be easier for BigMack to get the D humming than it was the O for this year.
They should use one of the back up QB's as holder and hold try outs for punter with the special teams, would save two scholar ships or at least one. With the offense coming along as it has, maybe we don't need a great punter, lol.

November 21st, 2008 at 9:36 pm
the defense will be hit hard. i am more concerned that we lose our top three dtackles, our best de, adam n sol, mouton, dowling, roberts, and erob. that leaves two starters returning.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:40 pm

Finally, just one more day until glorious Hawaii football! At home, no less.
I wonder - is the D supposed to have been better on paper than it was last year? Blaze and Rocky aren't playing, but that can't totally account for why Hawaii's D is 86th in total defense when it was ranked in the 30s last year. I mean, special teams were problematic for a few weeks, and the offense did put strain on the defense at times, but would it have made this much of a difference? I figured veterancy in the defense would've translated to more sacks and turnovers than it has. Not to say the D is bad by any means, especially in the wins, but inconsistent? Sure seems that way sometimes.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:18 pm
We had a downpour in Kaneohe at around 6:30pm... got caught in it walking back from Times Supermarket. Took all but 15 seconds to be thoroughly soaked. But it only lasted about 30 minutes.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:18 pm
Anyway, luckily the offense has really been stepping it up since NMSU. With that level of play, Idaho and Washington St. should be winnable games.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:22 pm
BowsForever,
I think it also has something to do with where the opposition got their first downs on turnovers this season. Our D gave up more points because we were turning over the ball in our own end of the field. So naturally we are ranked lower.
Additionally, I think our Defense significantly played more downs than they did last year. And gave up more yard cummulatively.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:23 pm
It feels less humid and judging by how cool my living room feels I think the trades have come back.
Like I posted earlier, it looks like Oahu dodged a bullet at least for tonight because it looks like the trades are dissipating the junk as it comes ashore from the SW.

Oyasumina-tsai...
IT'S ALMOST SATURDAY!
November 21st, 2008 at 10:39 pm
Bowsforever,
Part of it is the increased competition, part of it is the bad positions the offense put the defense for the first half of the season, and part of that is the struggles they have had with injuries and inconsistency. The long plays given up against Utah State were quite shocking, but other teams like Nevada had big plays against the D that didn't seem to happen last year.
I wonder if we are now realizing just how much UH missed Jake Patek. Patek wasn't the fastest player, but he was smart, worked hard, and was consistent. Monteilh, Robinson, and Thomas all played last season, but there are a lot more problems this season it seems...surprising since they all had experience in Mac's system last season. Mouton wouldn't be shifted to free safety if there weren't problems at safety this season.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:45 pm
rain - much ado about nothing? or will it all come tomorrow?
November 21st, 2008 at 10:48 pm

November 21st, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Agreed that given all of the factors, the D wouldn't have been in the 30s in total defense this year. But I gotta say, when it really counted, the D of last year did seem a lot more consistent, or clutch at least. Patek and also players like Newberry came up huge when the game was on the line. I distinctly remember less flea-flickers and plays like the ones at NMSU working in '07, too.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:37 pm
koakane,
Thanks for the info. See youse dere.

November 21st, 2008 at 11:57 pm
al,
I suppose looking at how a number of teams this season are hurting because their qb's went down.. first, second and in some cases third team, as well, it might be a good idea to have three solid QBs with one redshirt in the wings, on call at a moment's notice. In your heart you want all the QB's to have their 15 minutes of fame. Sadly, in your head, you know, that's probably not going to be the way it pans out. But that's competition and that's the heartbeat of football.

QB is a tough position to compete for PT, rarely see a rotation unless you want controversy or someone not doing the job baring injury. You got to feel for peeps like Santos and Austin, walk ons, who work relentlessly but they go in knowing that PT or making the travel squad would be iffy...

Cracking an international market is a goal of most growing corporations. It shouldn't be that hard, yet even the big multi-nationals run into trouble because of language and cultural differences. For example, observe the following examples below.
The name Coca-Cola in China was first rendered as Ke-kou-ke-la. Unfortunately, the Coke company did not discover until after thousands of signs had been printed that the phrase means "bite the wax tadpole" or "female horse stuffed with wax" depending on the dialect. Coke then researched 40,000 Chinese characters and found a close phonetic equivalent, "ko-kou-ko-le," which can be loosely translated as "happiness in the mouth."
In Taiwan, the translation of the Pepsi slogan "Come alive with the Pepsi Generation" came out as "Pepsi will bring your ancestors back from the dead."

They're still laughing about this at IBM. Apparently the computer giant decided to have some parts manufactured in Japan as a trial project. In the specifications, they set out that they will accept three defective parts per 10,000 .
When the delivery came in there was an accompanying letter. "We, Japanese people, had a hard time understanding North American business practices. But the three defective parts per 10,000 have been separately manufactured and have been included in the consignment. Hope this pleases you."

SIX DIE TRYING TO SAVE CHICKEN - August 1, 1995
CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Six people drowned yesterday while trying to rescue a chicken that had fallen into a well in southern Egypt. An 18-year-old farmer was the first to descend into the 60-foot well. He drowned, apparently after an undercurrent in the water pulled him down, police said.
His sister and two brothers, none of whom could swim well, went in one by one to help him, but also drowned. Two elderly farmers then came to help, but they apparently were pulled down by the same undercurrent. The bodies of the six were later pulled out of the well in the village of Nazlat Imara, 240 miles south of Cairo. The chicken was also pulled out. It survived.

For those unfamiliar, Welfare payments are made in the US to individuals and families with income below a level. The following quotations are taken from actual letters received by the Welfare Department in applications for support of receiving payments.
I am forwarding my marriage certificate and 6 children. I had seven but one died which was baptized on a half sheet of paper.
I am writing the welfare department to say that my baby was born two years old. When do I get my money?
Mrs. Jones has not had any clothes for two years and has been visited regularly by the clergy.
I cannot get sick pay. I have six children can you tell me why?
I am glad to report that my husband who is missing is dead.
This is my eighth child. What are you going to do about it.
Please find for if my husband is dead. The man I am now living with can't do anything until he knows.
I am very much annoyed to find out that you have branded my son illiterate. This is a dirty lie as I was married a week before he was born.
In answer to your letter, I have given birth to a son weighing 10 lbs. I hope this is satisfactory.
I am forwarding my marriage certificate and my 3 children one of which is a mistake as you can see.
My husband got his project cut off about two weeks ago and I haven't had any relief since.
Unless I get my husband's money pretty soon, I will be forced to lead an immortal life.
You have my changed little boy to a girl, will this make any difference?
I have no children yet, as my husband is a truck driver and works night and day.
I want money as quick as I can get it. I have been in bed with the doctor for two weeks and he doesn't do me any good. If things don't improve, I will have to send for another doctor.
In accordance with your instructions, I have given birth to twins in the enclosed envelope.

Welcome to the Warriors Jack Sula!
RBs with a LB mentality fit the needs for UH's offense. Enrolling in January will give him a head start in learning the offense, whic is always a positive.

So what, exactly, does "Your comment is awaiting moderation" mean?
Are we being censored? If so, maybe they will finally begin to crack-down on those low-lifes that post here every-so-often.

Ralph,
#218 - That's the knock on Sula at the moment is his speed. He is more of a Big Back prospect than a traditional Tailback. He has the power and good hands out of the backfield but lacks the top end and second gear in the open field. Regardless any guy who rushes for 1800+ yards
two years in a row with 20+ TD's is better than just good in my opinion! My take is he probably has football game speed. Like Funaki who is clocked at 4.7, but in the game it seems he runs a 4.3 sometimes!
November 22nd, 2008 at 7:18 am
Howzit djmitcho,
I would be sleeping right now but the frikkin kids went wake up early and went in the back to play basketball. All I heard was one bouncing basketball going WTF? I look at my clock and said 6:17 a.m. I look out the window and see my 2 boys practicing, but instead of telling them be quiet I figure if they that dedicated for go practice then I'm all for it. Only being 6 and 2 yrs old...I hope this kine dedication will get them somewhere later on in sports... Football season just pau so he ready for Basketball season...so here's hoping for some future All-American Warrior Football players or Basketball!

Great Morning All!
IT'S SATURDAY!
Sula sounds like a great prospect.
Most intriguing line in the article:
Running back Jake Heun is redshirting this season. But Heun also can play defensive end.

Still raining in Central Oahu; not as hard as before I started eating my sweet bread french toast and side ordah Spam....

d1 . . .
I never finished my comment on that Spam story.
As one who enjoys a good Spam musubi, fried Spam, grilled Spam, Spam and eggs, Spam in saimin, etc. I have been doing my share of supporting the Hormel Corporation.
Was there really ever a slump in their sales -- in Hawai'i or with transplants? Good thing Costco stocks Spam!!!
