It's moving day for the Warriors, who will check into the Moana Surfrider Hotel at 5 p.m.
Because the Warriors are officially on the bowl clock, every team member — including the non-scholarship players — are invited to the training-table meals.
Today's breakfast speciality was beef curry, in addition to the usual egss and various meats.
Kealoha Pilares was at full speed during the drills today. He was used at running back. Ryan Mouton also appears to be physically fit. His left ankle is heavily wrapped, but he's not wearing an ankle brace.

The first day of class. The first time we met our prom date's father. Heck, probably the first time we posted on a blog.
We stammer. We fumble for words.
In describing his winning catch against Nevada, wideout Malcolm Lane told a news-conference audience he wanted it "badder" than the defensive back. (Ryan Mouton leaned over and said the word should be "more.")
And that should have been that.
Except the comment was replayed during the highlight video at the team banquet.
Since then, teammates often yell out the phrase. During yesterday's scrimmage, linebacker Adam Leonard jokingly implored the defensive players to "want it badder."
Solomon Elimimian, an English major, said: "I don't know how you make a mistake like that. Badder. Is that even a word? We thought he was talking about a cake."
Lane said: "I'm not used to being on TV like those big-shot guys like Adam and Solly. When I got up there, I was a little nervous. I usually don't speak like that. I'm usually very proper. I didn't notice it until Mouton said something. He was right beside me, and he kept saying, 'more.' It was a spur-of-the-moment thing. I wasn't even really thinking."
He said everything had died down until the banquet when the KGMB-produced video was shown.
"That's when everybody really paid attention," Lane said. "It's like a slogan now. I guess I'm popular around here."
And how long will the heckling persist?
"We've got seven days to remember the 'badder,'" Leonard said. "After that, we'll let it go."

Good Morning All! Well here in Spokane the snow and streets are getting "badder" by the minute. Measured the snow on the wall at work and it was at 16 inches. I'll post pics when I get home from work. Usually there are 20 of us here at the office. Today 5. If you don't have a 4x4 or all wheel drive, you will not be going anywhere. While the main streets are decent, the side roads are horrible.

Congratulations to the Te'o family on Manti Teo being named high school athlete of the year by Sporting News Magazine (http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=498250 ).
After the way Funaki was treated by the UH, I would be really surprised to see any more Samoan or Tongan kids from Laie or from the LDS play for UH.
Funaki, a true Polynesian warrior, showed he was better than that, the pettiness and childishness that pervades the attitudes of the UH coaching staff. Congratulations also to Funaki for rising above it all.

uce I don't know if you watch any UH games or not but if you did you would know that Funaki started half of the games this season. So what attitude from the coaches are you talking about because they replaced him with a "haole guy" from the mainland let's face it reality is Inoke is a great guy I love the leadership he shows and is always a team player with that being said he is really not the right qb for the offense we run if we ran a pistol offense similar to Oregon then he would be a perfect fit I mean he had at least 15 interceptions this season were the coaches supposed to continue to use him and possibly lose games? Stop with the in coaches don't like poly kids stuff it's getting real old post something of substance not a conspiracy theory.

No body said you had to like or agree with my comments. Personally, I encourage all Samoan and Tongan youth from Hawaii and abroad that I speak to and with to go play for Pac 10 teams instead of the UH, at least until the UH gets more Samoan and Tongan coaches or at least until UH gets itself some coaches who know how to identify the best players and then play the best players.
We have in our midsts former NFL pros like Al Noga, Mike Ulufale, Maa Tanuvasa, Chris Fuamatu-Maafala, and many others, an abundance of college level coaching talent, essentially, guys who have been to "The Show", guys who could easily coach a lowly WAC team like the UH, yet despite this fact, the UH continually goes outside to look for a HC. Except for Miano, a good coach and someone who has the requisite qualifications, in my opinion, to be a great HC for UH, have any of the other assistant or associate coaches been to "The Show".
You can't tell me without looking ridiculous that high performing athletes like those named above do not know how to coach college level players or that they couldn't do a better job than Fat Mack and his apple dumpling gang.

#1: I support Bighhilofan2 suggestion to get ESPN involved in some "free" advertisment on the near completion of Cooke Field as we saw it on KITV sports last night. They can do another "take" of the fully completed field when they return for the PRO Bowl.
It can turn out to be a major boost in getting recruits who are sitting on the fence, local and mainland, to see what is changing at UH to improve lower campus facilities for all students, athletes, and community.
Nationally, it will dispell the notion that UH still has "crummy" facilities and is unable to gather support from the Legislature and Community.
After all, was it not ESPN who did a little "negative" publicity after Colt's public statements about the soap and facilities? Let them now see and show everyone that UH is making changes!!!!!!
#2: Is it Coach Mack's position NOT to release any LOI commits until all the LOI's are in? Many of us are chomping at the bit to see who really wants to be a Warrior.

Constructive criticism is something I appreciate - name-calling and slams I see as more a reflection on the writer than those written about.
If your purpose is to be mean-spirited, the message is received. If your purpose is to improve the opportunities for players at UH, I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean.

Each of us supports the UH in different ways. That your approach is different from mine does not make your approach better than mine or my approach better than yours.
The end result we are all seeking, of course, is the same end result: a successful UH program. You choose to be a cheerleader for the UH while I choose to comment about areas where the UH could use some improvement. That my comments might be taken to be too opinionated or too aggressive is understandable given the posture you have chosen to take for your self - that of cheerleader, waving pom poms and wishing for all the best while staying away from making any comments which might remove the cheerleader banner from your personality on this blog and which might incur the ire of the other regular bloggers. You are concerned about being liked whereas I am not concerned about being liked. Never have been; never will be.
Hey, some of us are cheerleaders while some of us are players, doers, movers. Which one are you?

Being a great player does not always translate into good coaching. Just because someone played in the NFL doesn't mean they can coach. It takes something special to be a coach. It's not all x's and o's. Part of being a coach at the college and even the high school level is also being able to teach life lessons. I believe that Coach Mack and staff have that extra something to bring to the table. Coach Mack has a great record of producing high caliber NFL players wherever he has coached at the D1 level.

I too have a hard time understanding what Uce2 is trying to say.
Does he want an all-Poly team, with all-Poly players & coaches? Hmm...pretty tall order in a not-so-perfect-world.
Perhaps we should go with only the 'chosen' ones who are good Poly people but not quite football talented enough to carry a team.
...and the ex-NFL greats who would make fine coaches, do they get to start at the D-1 level automatically?...or do they need to qualify themselves first as coaches? We could just assume they can step in and do the job. I'm quite sure some have tried and now choose NOT to, for obvious reasons...ya gotta win! It's expected.
I'm jez askin'...I keep my distance from foreign influence and try not to stray too far away from the ceded lands.

Kekoa - #73 right on!! Sometimes the best coaches are not the best players. Coaches need to be teachers and motivators and we've all had teachers that were good in their profession but couldn't teach and/or motivate. And why is the Pac-10 any different? They don't have any Polynesian coaches either.

If you are a doer, then maybe you should apply to be a coach at a D1 school somewhere and show UH how it is done.
Maybe players like Manti are looking to expand their horizons and try something different. As much as I would like to see every local star play at UH, maybe it's not what they want. Maybe a school that offers them a scholarship has a course of study that UH does not have or may be better than what UH has to offer. There are too many kids in Hawaii who have not had the chance to see what opportunities lie outside the borders of Hawaii besides disneyland and vegas. If going to somewhere besides UH helps them do that, then good for them.

so when we talk about the "show" why would you degrade coach mack he's coached in the show obviously if NFL didn't need coaching they would pay hc 5 million a year. What mack brings to the program is the same thng JJ brought the business side of the sport, the professionalism these kids will experience if they make it to the NFL. How can you expect the guys you mentioned to become a college coach without any experience. As far as I know the only one coaching is Ma'a as for Chris he jus stopped playing a few years ago all the coaches in the staff have college coaching experience. There a difference between having pride in culture and being ignorant.

Who anyone here is unimportant. What is important is whether or not they have something interesting or informative to contribute. If yes, great. If not, oh well. All this childish talk about "prove this and prove that" is old and tired. I am long past the point in my life where I have to prove anything to anyone. My days of having to prove myself are long gone.
For those who issue challenges like some that have been issued here, leave the challenges for the school yard. This here is a not a school yard. Who has the bigger stick and whether or not they can prove it moves the discussion from grown up commentary and discussion to the realm of child's play.
I am not interested in child's play. If child's play is what you are seeking, go talk to Kekoa or some other person on this blog. I have nothing to prove. Understand. I do offer, however, critical commentary on what I see as things UH needs to do to build a better program.

Since when has coaching in Hawaii become an ethnic issue? Or football, for that matter.
I want to see the best coaches we can afford, coaching. Moreso, I would like to see them with UH connections (eg alumni), not just 'Hawaii' connections. I could care less for their ancestry. What's more important is how good they are in developing our young athletes athletically and academically, and opening doors for them in the real world...football and/or career.

lee aguirre is one who fell under the radar, don't know why with all his credentials. could be that he was under the 5'10" minimum standard for big time cornerbacks.
the warriors have had a long successful history with the undersized cb, abe elimimian, lewis, newberry, mouton, etc.

First of all, calling names - Fat Mack - is neither productive nor instructive. Still, I have to say right here that it bothers me to see how out-of-shape some of the coaches and athletic administrators are because I do not want to see them drop dead - but I would never mock them since what good would that do?
If I were a parent of an extremely talented athlete - actually I was but she used her brains to get a full-ride academic scholarship - but if I have a highly-talented grandson, my advice to him in helping make decisions would be to select a school based upon both academics and athletics equally. I would also encourage him to go to a new place to meet new people and learn new things.
Our grandsons are 7 (this coming Tuesday) and 9 years old (10 in February) and love soccer, tennis & swimming. I doubt if either one will ever play beyond youth leagues, but one never knows. Still, their parents and we will support them no matter what.
Most college-level athletes will never play in any professional sport. That's why academic success is so important. Of the 120 young men listed on the program, how many will playing in the NFL next season.
Take a look around at the inner-city African-American college athletes in NCAA basketball & football programs or the Hispanic baseball players or the mostly Caucasian rural kids in all three sports - should they be encouraged to stay close to home in order to beef up programs at nearby schools? Of course not. If they can go half-way across the country to play for a top-ranked NCAA team, then why can't young men from Hawai`i do the same without making cracks about UH's recruitment policies?
As for Coach Mack's selections for his coaching staff, I believe that more qualified individuals might have worked out better in some areas - but there's no sense in grinding over what happening nine or ten months ago. Time was of the essence last February and March. He did what he had to do to get ready for spring practice. There ain't no rewind button on life.
This season is a transitional season - and all things considered, the outcome is about what I expected. Well, I am not sure which of the three games given away hurts the most - probably Utah, then Cincinnati and finally San Jose - but this is a bridge year. Next year should be even better and come the start of his third season, Coach Mack will be totally in charge and on top of all aspects of the game or he will start replacing the coaches who are under-performing starting in December, 2010.
Granted, I am no expert in being a football coach or even an armchair quarterback, but there are certain things in common that all Chief Poobahs in business, religion, non-profits, education, and politics all have in common. And they all need three years to get everything working right according to their standards.

It was weird, but we were talking about Quentin today (he's Caryn Kunz's cousin). I think he might give it another go in the spring. He's still enrolled at UH. But he needs to lose some weight. He's perfect as a nose in the 3-4, but not so much as a DT in the 4-3. As one coach said: People can't move on him. But he can't move, either.

Uce2 sounds like he used to support the UH but for some reason was either burned or turned off by the team or school. He/she also sounds like another person who always posts interesting comments on other stories in the HA.
Still, I do not understand how Uce2 expects more Poly's to go and play for UH when he consistently advises the Poly athlete otherwise. And, the issue of why the UH does not have more Poly coaches was already addressed by Mr. Tsai.

When the word first came out about Beaver in the spring I had to see it for myself and the first thing I thought of was, "if he could develop a motor with his size, he could do some damage"... It would be like Glenn Dorsey times ten.
I saw him completely bowl-over a few starting O-linmen in the spring and some of my friends that saw him in the spring were excited to see him in the fall, but that wasn't the case.
This shouldn't have surprised me as Coach Mack wants that speed on defense.
Hopefully it will all work out.

Actually Uce2 got me thinking, just how important is playing in the NFL to coaching in college, so I did a little looking around and found out it doesn't.
I looked at just the top ten team for this year and here are the results:
1. Florida (50) 12-1 1,602 Urban Meyer play defensive back at the University of Cincinnati Did not play in the NFL
2. Oklahoma (9) 12-1 1,540 Bob Stoops defensive back at the University of Iowa. Did not play in the NFL
3. Texas (6) 11-1 1,530 Mack Brown played running back for FSU Did not play in the NFL
4. Alabama 12-1 1,410 Nick Saban played DB at Kent State Did not play in the NFL
5. USC 11-1 1,372 Pete Carroll played free safety University of the Pacific Did not play in the NFL

Pomai: fantastic work regarding the non-NFL backgrounds of the coaches for the top ten college teams. I was having a similar thought a few minutes ago while munching on my sandwich. Did Dick Tomey ever play college ball? I know he played baseball, but I'm not sure he was on a collegiate gridiron.

We’ve changed the time and other details for the meetup with Kamali’o NYC. Dawn will be bringing along her step-son and his wife - they’re both professional musicians.
We’ll be at Murphy’s to watch the Giants v. Panthers game starting at 3 pm on Sunday, December 21, and then will head out to Aiea for Mexican food at El Mariachi - arriving there around 7 pm.
If you don’t want to come to Murphy’s for the game but want to join us at El Mariachi, please do so.
The restaurant is not easy to find so you'll to caravan out to Aiea from Murphy’s at the end of the game if you’re not already familiar with its location. It’s located in a multi-level shopping center directly across from Aiea Medical Center and McDonald’s on Moanalua Road.
Dawn really would love to meet up with as many Tsai-kos as possible but will be leaving for the Big Island on December 23 so she cannot make the T-Gate.
Coach Inaba’s program at Dole Middle School has received over $250 from generous Tsai-kos - in addition to the football tickets. He’s also getting a small grant from a local foundation for his program tp help buy shoes, uniforms, equipment, and registration fees for kids whose parents cannot afford to pay them.
Again a reminder - season ticketholders in any sport will get 50% off on up to eight men’s basektball tickets for Tuesday’s game with UC-Riverside. They did UH in last spring during the Bracketbuster’s game.

I see what you were referring to. At the banquet they showed a video summary put together by KGMB (well done BTW) and Hisatake was always front and center in the pre game huddles and post game huddles. Seemed like he possess a natural ability to be a leader on a team.

Kapolei linebacker/fullback Simione Vehikite has verbally committed to the University of Southern California, his coach, Darren Hernandez said today.
Hernandez said Vehikite, who is 6 feet 1, 243 pounds and has been timed at 4.6 seconds in the 40-yard dash on grass, made 119 tackles this season including 10 sacks and 12 tackles for losses. He also played fullback and averaged 10 yards per carry.
Vehikite transferred to Kapolei from Maui's Lahainaluna last spring.

On the topic of polynesians, how about the German Samoans like the Hannemans and the Wolfgramms and others?
By the way, there are many ways in which we are connected given the way we humans have migrated to populate the world.
Hawaii, the islands of the pacific, including Easter Island, were populated by native peoples who came from the South Pacific, but they in turn came from Luzon and Islands in the Phillipines, and before that from Taiwan, and long before that the China.
To this day, the words for rock, coconut, several numbers, island, and concepts like the ancient home of all polynesians are almost identical in Tagalog, Illocano, Tongan, Maori, Samoan, and Hawaiian (need to interchange the k's and t's). All related.

Al ~ I will stop my rant after this one....I promise.
Gotta stick up for our MSLiz. She does happen to know a lot about UH & 'Skins football plays and players. For someone like Uce2 to talk smack about Liz just being a cheerleader is an insult to her knowledge of the game.
Not only can Liz out cheer the cheer leaders, and we've all seen evidence of her handiwork...but she can put the right defense together to provide the right stopping power to any offense in the WAC. With her knowledge of the shootz - den run, she is dy-no-mite!
I know this is playing into the hands of this 'sister' troll, but she may as well know the truth. Man up Uce2, Liz is not the only Tsaikette that can take you down when it comes to football. On a bad day, even Mrs. A-House could brush you off like one mosquito...but then she's oriental, so that wouldn't fit your Poly-racial preferance. At any rate, you wouldn't want any part of a feud with her either!
There are other Tsaikettes, but then I would be guilty of piling on.

Uce2 if the comments you post here are not for the blogs comsumption and reading pleasure, then why post your dirty laundry here. You can go straight to the horse itself rather than trying to pick fights with people that of course do not feel the same as you do. If you are trying to make a point to Mufi then go tell Mufi. Are you that much of a coward that you have to sit behind a computer and degrade very kind people over a public forum like this blog cause if you are this is not the place to do it. We are a family here and we take care of our own. You know the reason why people are so fond of Hawaii is because it is all about the family and we treat each and every player that decides to come to Hawaii as our family. If our local boy go away we still cheer for as if they were still here. The only difference is they are in another jersey. So for those out there who read the blog and lurk on a regular basis I a very sorry for going off on this little tangent but these people are my family and I take care of my family.

Yep. They have those 4 Pac-10 schools covered on their planes. I had the opportunity to fly on the Wazzu jet from Portland to Boise when I joined the Tsaikos for the Boise State game.
I share your sentiments regarding Hawaiian Air and a potential UH logojet. It would be nice to see it on one of their Trans-Pac planes, but even something on one of the smaller interisland jets would suffice.

I know that you are a teacher now...Momo and Mrs. Momo were public school teachers in Hawaii until they retired. Momo taught for a year at Kapaa High, then taught at Kailua High from when it opened in 1960. After he retired he kept teaching, and he teaches 4 days per week now I think.
He's always been a great role model for me.

Party is pau at Murphy's, but a whole bunch of people went to Shinsho Tei for karaoke afterwards. I think Pride. has been warming up the microphones for a while!
It was a great party tonight. Among the highlights were Mrs. A-House picking herself for the grand prize, a spirited thumb wrestling match with Pride., and me with a wad of $1 bills (in the jan ken po tournament — I lost to UHfan808). Anything else, I'm not sure I'm allowed to mention.

unbelievable that much snowfall in silver city. the headlines back home was that a hawaiian air flt was delayed due to the heavy snowfall at the macarran.

speaking of poopy pants- my #1 and only daughter called tonight with the latest LiLu stories. Da little buggah is potty training her mom. She tells mom when she has to go poop and shishi. Da buggah no can even walk yet! But pretty soon.
She talks pretty good too - I could hear her saying Ma! in the background.

Mei Ling -- yes, we did buy the the karaoke mic system on Sunday. Got the tip from midnight. So now Kekoa, midnight, and I have similar systems. Would be real interesting to see what extra song chips we each bought.... But it is really more fun singing karaoke live with friends... and practice won't help me...

Just back from a busy night. We attended a meeting that required helping to organize a food drive for the needy families at Christmas.
Lots of canned goods collected today and this eve. More work to do this weekend in finishing up. It was nice to have a great turnout, as people volunteered because of families they know who were hit hard by the flood.
I'm exhausted!...Got an early call at the State Capital in the morning. I'll be sure and go by (J) James's office and bang on his trash can. On second thiought...I should go by Murphy's first! Bwhahahaha!

Was reading the morning article on Kafentzis passing up walking for graduation. Are they going to have practice the same time as graduation?? Isn't Mack part of the processional for graduation?? They should adjust the practice time to accomodate the players who graduate. It is an honor to receive your degree in front of family and friends. The players shouldn't have to choose between the two.

One of my aunts taught at either Kailua H or I School. Cannot remember which one. She suffered a stroke in early summer. Still is sharp as a tack but needs a little bit of help.
With the economy the way it is, it is a good thing you and the Mrs. are able to help raise your grandchildren. It must be a lot of fun and exhausting work.
Mom watches my niece, helps with her homework, feeds her three meals and bochas her each weekday.
But, Mom loves every minute of it! I usually get a report on what is going on every two or three days. I guess the job of a (grand)parent is never really finished!

you know, the story goes that a short while back a kid near Laie would wait by the road to catch the bus to Honolulu. He played football at Punahou. And this other kid had a father who woujld drive his kid and another kid into town to Punahou, early a.m. and drive right by the lkid on the side of the road, and the kids in the car woujld tease the little kid as they drove by and left him on the side of the road even though they were all headed to da same school on da odda side ah da mountains and played on da same team.
The little kid never forgot. His fahdah never forgot. That little kid that had stood on the side of the road, he's gonna be a rock star in college football, PAC10, mark my words. And all theze people are polys.
The moral ah da story. Ethnic not enough. At da top 1% ah da top 1%
the kids remember who treated them like they was the top 1%, including their "friends" anad fellow polys. memory is like a elephant ting. and i wasn't dare but i no da story.
an dats why I just no dat da kids in da car, the lessons they learnin in life from da car drivah, well.... I not puttin my uluz in his basket.

there is a silver lining in the story about those that go away to college. most times the kid grows up and does something useful and good in life, lookin back, he attributes the opportunities he got going away, and appreciates what he left behind Hawaii. Like Malloe. like me.
so i understande why some of our guyz committin to da mainland.
but you also understand why I just love the localz who are staying home and playing for us.

I know this was probably asked before but given that we are not on the Man(ti)'s list of 5 does that mean that he_ _ would freeze over before he considers doing a u-turn and become the biggest hero in the State by saying, "uhh thanks folks but I'm going to stay home and play for UH."
