The gang's all here
By Stephen Tsai
Today's practice was the first involving all 111 players.
Attendance had been spotty because of final exams, final projects and graduation.
This was one of the better practices. The offensive line, particularly the tackles, have played well the past week.
Kealoha Pilares is running well.
Daniel Libre also has looked sharp.
On defense, the Warriors have tried to rotate in fresh bodies. Ryan Mouton looks as healthy for the first time in weeks.
And Erik "E-Rob" has been gettting in more work at safety.
Aaron Bain again will return punts.
* * *
The best thing about football is that the best competitors become the best friends. Delbert Tengan and Reggie Torres attended today's UH practice at Saint Louis School.
* * *
Here's a before and after look at UH quarterbacks. That's Greg Alexander on the left, coach Nick Rolovich on the right. Or is it the other way around?
* * *
Erik Robinson, Tim Grasso and Inoke Funaki gather after practice. Funaki was heading off to church, where he's a youth leader.
* * *
Here's some private school linebacker at yesterday's Notre Dame practice. What's his name again?
* * *
Good ol' Don Murphy. UH's top booster prepared meals for the Fighting Irish.
* * *
Here's quarterback Nate Montana, son of a not-so-average Joe. I heard his father was a pretty good quarterback.
* * *
And to boost my blog hits, I thought it necessary to post a picture of Princess Leila. (OK, she wasn't expecting this and her eyes might be closed. Then again, it is the end of the year and I need to make quota.)
* * *
It's never good to look too far ahead, but some observers at practice are marveling at Jake Heun's skills — as a pass-rusher. Heun, a running back, is sitting out this season because of a disc injury that has affected his leg strength. But whenever he volunteers himself as a rush end, according to observers, he's nearly unblockable. And, sure, quarterback Steele Jantz is just filling in as a wide receiver, but he always makes catches — with only the hands, never the body — and is tough to tackle. Hmm ...

The Warrior Beat

December 21st, 2008 at 7:38 am
I guess Heun and Jantz show the virtues of having athletes on the team, not just position specialists. Still, neither have yet had an opportunity to flash their stuff at RB and QB in actual game play. Nice that they have options!

Heun at DE would be a big plus next year for the D-line. Good call.
December 21st, 2008 at 8:09 am
wow. top 10
December 21st, 2008 at 8:10 am
I hope they move Jake to DE next year, we don't have much depth at that position.
December 21st, 2008 at 8:12 am
Good to see all the new bloods bloggin'.
Welcome, my friends.
December 21st, 2008 at 8:13 am
I love Heun so much as an athlete, I think he could play anywhere. But personally, I want to see him as a RB. I say if he can block, keep him there.
Loved the article on Kekaula. I think his graduation deserves a party, don't you think?
December 21st, 2008 at 8:15 am

December 21st, 2008 at 8:16 am
Geez, they said that it's so quiet in the Edward Jones Dome that the 49er coaches can call out the Rams' plays, so that the players can react accordingly. Geez, they aren't kidding, I can hear them yelling out "draw!"
December 21st, 2008 at 8:19 am
ok back to reality, it's lunch, grits, chicken fried steak, with that nasty white gravy, green beans, man i wish i could just get a Bento from Zippys.
December 21st, 2008 at 8:27 am
Good Morning All...I think there was a good chance RK knew all the answers before the classes even started! Didn't he write the book on Broadcast Communications?
Man of Steele?...Any way the coaches decide to go with that kid is fine with me. He continued to impress me everytime I saw him at practice. He works long and hard at his craft. That's what it takes. ST, didn't he come from Grant HS?
December 21st, 2008 at 8:37 am
Assuming Jake is willing to play anywhere, we should play him where he's most effective. I think he can be a heck of a back too. Nice problem to have. My guess is we need a big back more, but since a rush end is a specialty position, why not play both?

Jack Frost has been visiting the past two weeks or so. Dang, he and Frosty the Snowman need to leave soon.
Good to hear d1's #2 is at PDX. Hopefully he can get out today.
December 21st, 2008 at 9:03 am
Aloha Kakahiaka!!!
As long as Jake doesn't incur anymore damage to his disc, it'd be great to see him play.
ST ~ Nice story on RK.
December 21st, 2008 at 9:24 am
Yes! TD catch/run by Fasano, and terrific down-field blocking by Bess!
December 21st, 2008 at 9:28 am
Re: Jake & Jantz
Mahalo for the reports. DE/RB, QB/WR - for me, I don't care! I just want them on the field (next season), healthy, and getting some PT. IMHO....

Hoping he can throw with pin point accuracy ST ?? Jake will be a good Blocking RB....block those DEs Jake and make um miss as well as make a few holes while you knock um over !
December 21st, 2008 at 9:36 am
Several NFL games today are being played in frigid weather. But the Niners brought their own "cold front" vs. the Lambs....
December 21st, 2008 at 9:42 am
Aloha Kakahiaka!
Anyone know where I can see the 'Skins game online?
Also- any T-gaters driving near the airport around 9:15am on Wednesday?
Nice to hear about Steele and Jake getting some looks. Also looking forward to see my neighbor boy Kenny Estes healthy again for next year!
December 21st, 2008 at 9:49 am
Which airport?
Isn't the 'skins game on later?
December 21st, 2008 at 10:19 am
Good morning, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.
Very interesting thoughts, ST. Next year is shaping up as a season of exciting mystery. So much new and "old" new talent coming in, with so many possibilities.
We have wide receiver talent in the wings that may rival the 06 unit, if the light comes on fast enough. Great talent everywhere else, should be extreme fun to watch it come all together.
With a very managable schedule, 09 could become a real treat for the fan hood.
December 21st, 2008 at 10:26 am
MIAMI•dOLPHINS•KANSAS•CITY•CHIEFS...
Hmmmm - okay, there is a "d" in there, but there certainly isn't any "D" on the playing field!
December 21st, 2008 at 10:30 am
someone brought up a good question on the SH board.
anyone think Obama would want to take in the Hawaii bowl on Wed?
someone should invite him. maybe Coach Mack or someone at UH has connections.
December 21st, 2008 at 10:31 am
Any word on what "tourist" events are scheduled today for the Iwish? I hope they get a big luau, and lots of beach time and lots of "reps" playing in some big surf.... Heck - maybe some box-jelly(fish) too? Hey - gotta experience all the aloha!

Great article on the young scholar, Robert Kekaula. I had a tough time with that ethnobotany class too.
December 21st, 2008 at 10:47 am
Steele Jantz is much too good a name for a QB. I hope he remains a signal caller.
December 21st, 2008 at 11:00 am
Take a Chance with Jantz....
Shake 'n Bake with Jake....
Okay, I'm jus' killin' time while I wait for #2 son to get on board a flight home
December 21st, 2008 at 11:05 am
Howzit Gang...
Guess who's back in the house...
Kekoa - I think Jantz played for Nevada Union...and although he's a QB, he supposedly played on the defensive side of the ball too in high school.
Jake Heun is going to be a monster regardless which side of the ball he lines up on. The guy can pound and no scurred hit somebody, das what we need to bring back that physical Warrior Style football...Au'ryte!

December 21st, 2008 at 11:10 am
Morning all. Three days to the Bowl.. four to Santa... five to after Xmas shopping.
A season as a Wide receiver could help Jantz better understand defenses and the running routes. He'd at least be walking in the "other's" shoes. Then when the "other" drops a ball that hits him right in the hands, Jantz can justifiably give that look or dissappointment that says. "If I can do it, so should you," that might make his receivers work on their catching skills even more.
At least we know he's got the athleticism. He can run, he can catch, and he can throw. Now is he accurate and can he master the passing routes?

brew/Jason,
Niners are UP! 17-16, 1:22 to go!
Whahappen?
December 21st, 2008 at 11:15 am
So after being away for couple weeks, had to catch up on the goings ons in the recruiting world. I see Benson Ma'afala had committed and a bunch of other JC's. Great to hear. I think Chizzy Dimude is going to fit in well at the RB position for us. Compact, strong, shifty, and pretty fast.
I was in Yuma, AZ for a few weeks training and stopped by my old stomping grounds at Arizona Western College to meet with some old friends. One of my boys mentioned about this big dude named Zach Masch who's going to play for UH next year. I didn't get a chance to meet him but saw him passing by and the dude is frikkin huge. I'd say a legit 6'3" - 6'4" and possibly 300lbs. They say he's pretty quick for a big dude, so I hope he can be a beast for us!

December 21st, 2008 at 11:28 am
Wow! jmXXXX is being nice to me today... so far....
Now what am I suppose to do?
Awlrightee.... KC throws an INT..... and the 'phins also get the W! I think Satele played C all game. Bess sure is a complete player. If he's not matching the catch, he's blocking, or following the play.... always has his head in the game.... unlike some of his WR teammates. IMHO
December 21st, 2008 at 11:28 am
jm2375,
Howzit, been training down in the desert in Yuma the past couple weeks, just got back. Had to catch up with everything and just got done watching the UH-Cinci game on my DVR...sheesh. Anyway, trying to get the Christmas shopping done cause I haven't even started yet... But ainokea as long as the boys unleash the poi pounding on the Irish and beat them into mush that'll be my Christmas present! Maybe then bruddah Manti Te'o will think twice about playing ball in South Bend.

Congrats to Davone, Samson and da Fishies. Bess was once again the top reciever (6 for 57 yds, long of 12). Uh, KC had no punts????? How can? I guess no d in this game.
December 21st, 2008 at 11:35 am
oooohhh.... - d1島 - Did #2 get out of PDX? Looks like heavy snow in Seatle.... I wonder if wafan & izzy are out playing in the snow... making snow angels or Monarch snow-men!??
December 21st, 2008 at 11:36 am
Davone Bess...
What can you say about this guy...how the hell did he go undrafted is my question??? He is by far the best receiver on the Dolphins roster not Ted Ginn Jr. I hope he has continued success and maybe can make a Pro-Bowl appearance real soon! Torry Holt one of the best receivers in the NFL even said Bess will be something special. We all know what he can do and now he's proving it at the highest level. Good luck Davone, congrats on the baby too... now if only some miracle happened where Colt Brennan ended up in Miami and reunited with Samson and Davone, brought in Grice-Mullens, C.J., and J Rivers...okay wait I'm dreaming again...
December 21st, 2008 at 11:38 am
jmXXXX - KC did have one punt. Bess had a fair catch at the 15. No return. You're right about Bess. He did have a drop. But the rest of the day was an A!!!

Nice update on top by ST! Thanks for the pixs!
A-House - ST mentioned that yesterday in his post....
"It’s official: Next year’s game between host Washington State and UH will be played in Seattle. Time to book your Seattle-Las Vegas packages."
I presume it's at Quest Field, Seattle....
December 21st, 2008 at 12:15 pm
A-House - Sorry, that info was from the 12/19 Warrior Beat post...
December 21st, 2008 at 12:19 pm
December 21st, 2008 at 12:23 pm
It is nice they moved the Seahawk game to Greenbay. Well, at least it sure looks like it!
A-House . . .
If you watch the Seahawk game that is where the Warriors will play the Cougs next year -- Qwest Field. Home of the Seahawks. Hopefully, though, without the snow and rain!
Nice stadium right across the street from Safeco Field where the M's play. That is another good stadium to watch a ball game.
I wonder if the M's will be at home during that time. That would be a cool package -- football and baseball games.
December 21st, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Good
morningafternoon everyone!ST -- Interesting pix!

wafan - Was this the game that Mike Holmgren was going to take his "walk" around the stadium after the the game? It would be ironic since he started his HC career at Green Bay....
December 21st, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Brew . . .
Yep. He will take his "senior walk" after the game. I am sure the Seattle fans will show their suppport and appreciation. Too bad his career had to end on this note. Too many injuries and substitutions playing every week so the team chemistry never clicked.
Sounds familiar!
December 21st, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Shucks. The M's will out of town the weekend of the UH/Wazzu game. But they are back on Monday the 15th for a three game series with the Chicago White Sox. Oh well. So much for my thought of making it for a ball game on Friday night then the football game on Saturday.

I will not be in Seattle for the Washington game. Going to arrive Vegas midweek and depart Sunday morning after the game for SFO to catch a cruise ship for 11 nights. But so far, it looks like Stretch, A-House, and Koakane are looking to do both = instant cattle calls(s)
December 21st, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I will be in Seattle for the UH-WSU game for sure! I'm guessing all the snow in the pass will be gone by then.
December 21st, 2008 at 1:14 pm
I meant that Stretch, A-House, Koakane are doing both games -- not the cruise too (as far as I know). Shucks...

Hey, I didn't know there where so many Catholic Churches in Las Vegas and that they all accept Casino Chips as offerings.
It got to the point that there were so many different chips from many different Casinos, that they outsourced the sorting to the monks in a nearby monastery, who then cashed in the chips for cash.
These monks are known in Vegas as the----Chipmonks.....

Kudos to the Redskins for a hard-fought defensive victory (because there really wasn't much offensive output, that's for sure). Changes better be coming on offense for next season.
As for the official Redskins website...what's up with the new registration wall to watch videos? If you're not gonna make 'em pay for it, you really should just drop the mandatory login deal.

Hi, A-House,
Did you get my e-mail?
Everybody must be out panic shopping. The wife and I are going up to Jacksonville for Christmas with daughter and grandkids. Usually they come here, but a change of scenery may do us some good this year.
December 21st, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Hi FT! How are you? How's the weather in FL? Looked pretty good yesterday.

Wow! Slow day on the blog.....
My internet stay broke, so I'm leaching off of somebody else's unsecured wireless network in the neighborhood. I feel guilty doing this, of course.
I don't know if it's just my residence or what, but my internet access works just fine up until ~5pm or so, when it slows down so much that web browsing is useless. Then ~6pm on it's pretty much inoperative the whole night until the following morning.
It's like I can only use the internet during normal business hours.
This has been going on since Friday and will be calling the cable company in the morning to see what's up, as this has been pretty frustrating.
December 21st, 2008 at 8:41 pm
jm2375,
The weather is quite nice right now, mid to high seventies, no complains.
December 21st, 2008 at 8:41 pm

December 21st, 2008 at 9:08 pm

See you guys tomorrow!

Florida Ted, you've got mail!
December 21st, 2008 at 9:17 pm
jm38u2383803lksfs0f8f09ufa0df3 . . .
Does what they are doing today really count as an Esme?
They usually return hours later with another comment or observation.
Esme, on the other hand, just goes away. Sometimes for weeks/months at a time. Dang. I know I am probably going to hear from Esme now.
She will forget by next summer, hopefully.
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Okay, goodnight for real this time.
December 21st, 2008 at 9:29 pm

United Mine Workers Football?
Has to be University of Wisconsin because the other Udub has only one capus
University of Wisconsin at Madison - main campus.
Whatta game tonight with the Giants and the Panthers. Three Nuyawkers
and a buncha kittykat fans in the next room.
El Mariachi needs to be supported by the Tsai-ko fuud community - they serve on paper plates because they cannot afford the real things yet, but the food is plentiful, tasty and cheap. Five of us ate for less than $50 including tip and carried away two full plates of leftovers for tomorrow's lunch.
December 21st, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Stretch,
haha
See you for your payoff on Wednesday!
December 21st, 2008 at 9:37 pm
LV - that's the famous last words, "no worry, I no like one present". When you finally listen to them, they get all PO'd. When you buy something, they get all PO'd for spending money. No can win.
When I asked Stretchette what she wanted for Christmas, she answered "cash". ooops, bad question.
December 21st, 2008 at 9:39 pm
WassupDoc,
Sounds like a good deal!
Stretch got it right. U. of Montana-Western (Dillon, MT). Member of the Frontier Conference (NAIA) in football.
December 21st, 2008 at 9:40 pm
WDoc - sorry about today, everyone was tied up. Maybe can try schedule again??
December 21st, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Whoops!! capus = campus
December 21st, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Yes, it's been a slow time.
This is a really odd bowl. There doesn't seem to be any oomph.
I'm not feeling it from Notre Dame or UH.
Also, these Notre Dame guys are too nice.
December 21st, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Happy to report that SELEGILINE works on doggie alzheimer's.
the dog has improved a 100 percent and is back to normal.
next on the list is my dad, no worry he's asleep.
December 21st, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Maybe if "some private school linebacker " was to say, "I'll attend the school of the winning team on Wednesday" that might provide some "oomph"?
December 21st, 2008 at 9:47 pm
post #170, thats not good for UH.
December 21st, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Did your son make it home.
My niece (also a Linfield student) is stranded. She's on stand-by somewhere.
December 21st, 2008 at 9:52 pm
bhf2
No fair posting at 2-3 in the morning! Brother, you know I luv you, but, I gotta point out...if two keiki o ka aina are on the field battling it out for two different teams...I AGREE with you...I'm supporting the UH Warrior. Slam dunk. No doubt...like the Pope is Catholic. But, I won't support booing or bad mouthing a local kid...underline "kid".
Sooo, do wet birds fly at night? (changing the subject)
Ciao
December 21st, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Well....uhh...errr....there's a chance that #2 son is spending the night with your niece
Both HA flts outta PDX got turned back to the terminal. They were on board for about 6 hours; got a go-ahead at one point to take-off in 30 but I guess they couldn't get the runway clear enough.
There's about a dozen of them who are sleeping at the gate tonight. The flight is scheduled to try again in the morning.
December 21st, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Tsai-Meister,
Maybe they're trying to lull each other with niceness and then come out guns blazing during the game? At least I hope so.
What's the latest ticket count?
December 21st, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Gee, it's that time of the month - jellyfish invasion!! Shall we not tell the Irish and let them go swimming? j/k
December 21st, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Shhh.... no say nothing about the box jellyfish to the ND guys.
heheheh
That might be "oomph" material?
December 21st, 2008 at 10:32 pm
The photo with this article clearly shows how hard George Daily-Lyles took their loss in the state championship game. That is too bad for him and the Poly team...but it shows how badly he wants to win and the memory of that loss might serve as a motivational force for him before he starts his college career.
December 21st, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Bess played a game in 10-degree weather with a 20mph wind, so the wind chill was probably below zero...while wearing short sleeves! He led him team in receptions and yards receiving and they now need to beat the Jets to win their division and make the playoffs. If they lose, they are out...so that is a huge game!
December 21st, 2008 at 10:37 pm
I'm glad that Samson had such a solid game...the OL gave up no sacks and the offense put up big numbers, with Samson showing how he can use his speed to block downfield.
December 21st, 2008 at 10:38 pm
Florida Ted,
News tonight says tix sales at about 41,500.
December 21st, 2008 at 10:38 pm
Long day...but at least I didn't miss posting on an entire blog.
December 21st, 2008 at 10:38 pm
We went to St. Louis high school, this past saturday and my son had a blast getting some autographs of his favorite players especially R. Mouton
and K. Pelaris. We'll be back again tomorrow to get more auto. cuz' we just bought the commerative UH/ND shreraton football. Rainbowtique has a small table in moana surf entrance lobby - if anyone interested.
GO WARRIORS!!!
December 21st, 2008 at 10:42 pm
J-Force,
Glad you went with the ball instead of the gold helmet.
Grrrrr
December 21st, 2008 at 10:51 pm
d1,
My son said the mini gold helmet didn't seem to look right with hawaii bowl logo on it, so i just paid a little bit more for the football. It's actually really nice, wish i could show it here. Aloha!
December 21st, 2008 at 10:54 pm
i wonder which espn announcers are gonna call the game. i bet there was probably a long line of people that signed up for this game to get out of the crazy cold winter storms hitting all of the mainland right now.
December 21st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Long day today.
Hoping for a successful return for #2 son tomorrow!
Oyasumina-tsai....
December 21st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Dave Pasch and Andre Ware are calling the game.
December 21st, 2008 at 11:18 pm
Jason,
If i'm not mistaken, Andre Ware was the espn sideline reporter on UH last game against washington on an unforgettable '07 season.
December 21st, 2008 at 11:26 pm
OK time for bed. Nitey nite. work tomorrow.
Jason - enjoy your vacation. That's about the only thing I miss about college - the vacations!!
December 21st, 2008 at 11:42 pm
J-Force: Actually, the press release said Jack Arute was the sideline reporter for the Washington game. But maybe they made a change last minute, IDK; I was at the game.
jm2375: Thanks! It starts tomorrow ... with me teaching a workshop for my math team kids.
December 22nd, 2008 at 12:21 am
JForce, does the autograph football actually say UH and ND on it? I went to Rainbowtique today and of course they didn't have it. Almost sold out of the t-shirts too.
December 22nd, 2008 at 12:50 am
Jack Arute and Desmond Howard were the sideline reporters for the UH vs UW game.
I personally like Chris Spielman and Sean McDounough who gave UH a lot of love after they called the SJSU, Nevada and Boise Games in '07.
December 22nd, 2008 at 1:04 am
WarriorMojo,
Correction on my last post about autograph football, it's just say Sheraton Hawaii Bowl -just got mixed up with my 2007 Warrior perfect season football. My son and i got it at a small rainbowtique shop in Moana surfrider were the warriors staying. Aloha!
December 22nd, 2008 at 1:41 am

December 22nd, 2008 at 5:55 am
A fine frozen morning all!
December 22nd, 2008 at 5:57 am
Never really thought about it before. Gas stations are running out of fuel to sell because the fuel trucks cannot get there.
So even though prices are still the lowest in years they have stopped dropping (and in some cases have even gone up a few pennies) because of the lack of supply and the artificial higher demand.
Kind of reminds me of the '70's and the gas shortages way back then.
December 22nd, 2008 at 6:02 am
bhf2 . . .
Had some friends visit in Hawai'i. They were so reflective it hurt to look at them when they stood in the sun. I asked them to stand facing the sun when we spoke so I could get tanned on both sides at the same time.
December 22nd, 2008 at 6:14 am

December 22nd, 2008 at 6:30 am
Way off topic - but the current issue of the British Medical Journal, one of the most respected journals worldwide, has a bunch of fun, non-academic, papers with the general topic being "Everything you know is wrong".
December 22nd, 2008 at 7:14 am
Great Morning All!
