Bowl day: Notre Dame

There was some drama yesterday when it appeared that a starting receiver was short the minimum credits the past semester to play in today's bowl. After checking, it was discovered the grades were not inputted. The player, who is a good student, actually received straight Bs. The situation was corrected.
Every UH player is academically eligible to participate.
Give credit to Upper Campus and the UH academic advisers who were able to track grades quickly. The last final exams were administered the past Friday, yet the athletic department was able to verify grades immediately.

When you do recruiting stories, you learn of a player's background and reason for choosing UH.
But it takes a while, sometimes years, to learn about his personality.
I remember my first interview with Keala Watson, when he confirmed he was committing to UH, and how shy he seemed. And five years later, Watson is knocking over chairs and service carts while leading a ha‘a that he co-wrote.
Or how Solomon Elimimian had such a difficult time deciding whether to choose UH. Four years later, he's the school's career leader in tackles. He also became the spiritual leader of the Warriors.
Or how Keao Monteilh just seemed to appear one day. He had the Bobby Brown-My-Prerogative haircut. When asked what he ran in the 40, he joked: "Four ... ever." Now he's a team leader, husband and father, and still a good jokester.
As this chapter ends, it will be interesting to see how the coming recruiting class will turn out.

UH considered having a White-Out Day. But then, officials reasoned, that it was important for other schools to know that this is not supposed to be another UH home game.

As we were trying to plan out high school reunion, I realized that Roosevelt was a three-year school back then. So I think I've spent more time around the football team than I did with my Roosevelt classmates.

I need some help! I lost my tickets and the stadium manager said I can't replace them unless I'm a season ticket holder. Good afternoon.
I'm excited to see how our D-line does against the Notre Dame offensive line, where the shortest player is 6'4" and the tallest is 6'8". This is key that our guys get penetration.
What intrigues me is the change as mentioned by Coach Mack that Aaron Bain is going back to return punts. I have a hunch something good is going to happen with a return.
Listening to the guys on the radio they've said the coaches have watched film on Notre Dame every single night. And I hoping that all there homework and preparation pays off today. I hope they find a weakness. On our side of the ball I hope we play smart and disciplined football.

I guess UH didn't want the ball back with the few seconds that could have been left on the clock had we started using our timeouts on 1st/2nd and Goal. Instead we took all 3 of our timeouts to the locker room.
D is getting little pressure on Clausen and are giving up the big plays. O is sporadic at best. Both sides appear to be overmatched physically and talents wise.
Oh well. I hope and pray for a 3 TD comeback, but I just don't think it's gonna happen. They can try and prove me wrong, but I'll reside in what lies ahead for next season.....

Really our D-Line and LB's are playing very good, its just our D-backs are SO over matched physically. Our offense is VERY inconsistent. They'll get a couple first downs, then just totally break down. Plus Greg Alexander is just not a very good QB ladies and gents. The guy cannot throw the passes that are necessary in the run n' shoot system and he refuses to throw the ball away.

To be honest, I stopped watching part way through the 3rd quarter. About as painful as last year's Sugar Bowl. It was nice to see Bain and Washington get ~100 yds receiving, but the offensive statistics do not show how much ND was able to control the line-of-scrimmage almost from the start.

Let's see how Coach mac handles this mess. There was no discipline with those ever present stupid penalities, lack of effort by Malcolm Lane, that defeated look by the offensive leader, our Q-back, the torching of our defensive backs. Is there more, oh yes I forgot, an absolutely inept special team effort? At this point in the season a team really should not be performing at this level....and I don't care what people may say about this message but it does come down to leadership. If I ran a company this poorly I'd be called on the carpet by the board and would demand specific changes in performance.
At $1 m a year, we should expect more than feel good. This was a simply awful display on a national stage which is absolutely unforgivable.
As a taxpaying, stakeholder and fan, I was embarrassed. This is inexcusable.
Notre Dame beat us and would have probably beaten us on a good UH day, but to perform as we did before a national audience in this manner is shameful.

Credit to the Irish for winning and putting up as many points as they did against us, but from what I saw, Clausen comes off as a cocky and arrogant SOB. Just my opinion.
Alexander looked beat up. There is a ton of work to do in the off-season for those who will be around next year, and with a more manageable schedule a bowl game should be within easy reach. We exceeded most expectations by getting to a bowl game, and in retrospect, going .500 in a major rebuilding year isn't that bad once you think about it.
Sure things could have been better, but our offense isn't the type that can be learned and mastered quickly so some of the quirks and mistakes were bound to happen. I'll start questioning things if the same mistakes that we've seen this year on offense continue into next season.

Buffoman completely agree. Look, ND was SUPPOSED to win this game, even though they were 'dogs. However, the way we played tonight was pitiful. At least with JJ our team would come out on FIRE and PHYSCED up. With Mac's teams their just seems to be absolutely no fire whatsoever, except one defense.
We also should have put Funaki in earlier. Alexander really was not on tonight and Funaki would not have done any worse really. Alexander was getting hit waaaaay to much and it was showing when he was about to throw thus why he was so hesitant the majority of the time. Funaki doesn't hesitate, because he knows that if he doesn't see anyone open he can rely on his legs, which he did. With Funaki having more patience in the pocket, he allows his receivers to get open and it in turn allows him more time to throw.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I dont feel like sugar coating anything. I was relatively positive throughout the season but now I am going to speak my mind.
what can i say?
our offensive line...if you can even call it that...is well pretty offensive. Truly truly pathetic. Brian Smith, in these tough economic times, my personal opinion is that you got one more shot next year, and I think thats pretty generous. Produce, or pack it up.
speed kills...and thats why notre dame is still alive and breathing. DB have no speed to keep up with these kinds of blue chip receivers. Taking a quote from tonights "Fan Phones"....."if you dont got speed, go find some."
I dunno how everyone else feels, but I was discussing this with some people and they seemed to believe (and i agree) that this lost coupled with loss against Georgia all on Nat'l TV and primetime set back our program for many years. In terms of national attention, respect, ranking, and BCS potential.
I hate to see the impact on our highly touted recruits. This might have been a very deciding factor in which schools some of these kids will go to.
Coach Mac, I feel for you. Tough times. I can only hope we get better and hope that our coaching staff knows what the he11 they are doing.

I for one am sick and freaking tired of hearing "ohhh we need to address this and we will" from the coaches. That has been recording nearly after every game. If this is their results "addressing" the personal foul penalties then we are up $h!t creek right now.

On a brighter note...
If I am a QB recruit, an o-line recruit, a wide receiver or a DB, I'd be jumping at the chance to come to Hawaii.
The commentator asked why Alexander was not more heavily recruited. Answer is simple, you can have the greatest gun of an arm but if you have the "R.Leaf" personality as a leader, you simply cannot lead especially when a team needs you most.
Funaki may not have had a gun of an arm, but he could rally a team.
Colt had "IT". So, if I were a QB prospect, I'd come as that QB position is wide open. If it isn't, I don't know what games Rolo has been watching and if he understands leadership on the field.
Wide recievers. By all means, when our guys Lane quit running their routes, I know I have a chance to push that guy out and get a spot.
D-backs. Anyone with any kind of speed who know's he is going to be sitting behind a USC, Georgia, of Florida guy, come to Hawaii as you will play here.
O-line, come, we'll be replacing a few folks and its a real possibility we may have a new o-line coach. Discipline, technique and stamina were not evident with a few of the folks. Off season may not have been as rigerous so that may change.
Special teams guys, we could use a new coach who went more for basic coverage and less stress on chest pounding everytime a tackle, which is what is supposed to happen, happens occurs.
Sorry, I tried to keep it positive but I believe that the comment about being put back a few steps did occur with the last two games and the WAC losses (which we could not control) we've been handed.
On another note, if I were Manti, I'd go to ND as they appear to be a young team that can rise. he could be a part of the building of a new dynasty and not a part of one already made (USC). And, he'd get one heck of an education. If we showed better, I'd want him to come to UH, but I am not confident that we are up to that standard at the moment. Way too much "theatrics", too much, dancing, chest pounding, bumping butts, etc, on stuff that should be standard: blocking and tackling. All that energy could be better directed at just being good at playing football.
Finally, I know there's a love fest with what JJ did with the run and shoot. Maybe it's time to modify it and building in a tight end or two, especially if we are going to balance it and run. I'm not saying go away from the 4 or 5 wides, but let's face it, we've become so predictable and that offense was tuned to JJ's brain, which is now in Texas. Time to do something that a hybrid that may be more in tuen with what we have here, not dreaming of or hoping for from Texas. next chapter needs to also be written in the offensive scheme.

Like coach Mack says recruiting is the life blood of the program. Time to go out and get some playmakers. There are a lot of holes that need to be filled. That alone should be an attraction for recruits. The chance to actually play. We need to get enough depth on the team so that coach Mack can bench the players who keep making the same mental errors. It seems like I was watching an instant replay of all the bad things that have happened on the field during the season. I hope that the new leaders on the team will keep the younger players focused. The new season begins tomorrow.

I had a bad feeling about this game. I knew it was a tall order to compete one-on-one with a Notre Dame team and I expected they were ready to jell. But they had a magical quality about them that just put them over the top.
Unfortunately this feeds into the general inferiority complex around the Warriors, when at 7-6 they were extremely lucky just to be in a bowl, not to mention having a quality opponent like Notre Dame.
Learn, regroup, move on.

I wrote this on SH, but I also wanted to share this with you. It's a thank you to this year's team. Not sure how many of them read this.
Thank you for spilling your guts for us.
Thank you for waking up at the crack of dawn all those mornings to strap it on and string it up to practice play after play.
Thank you for your sacrifice to play for your teammates, for us, and the state of Hawaii.
No matter what people think with their opinions and judgements, you are the ones out there playing your butts off wearing the H on your helmet and jersey, against another team who is also practicing and playing with all their might.
Sometimes the ball bounces our way, sometimes it bounces theirs. Thats the game you play.
Thank you to your families for sharing your time with us.
Thank you to the coaches, staff and their families for giving all that they could day after day, night after night.
Not sure how many of you read this, but I just wanted to express my thanks.

Mahalo to the organizers who put together a great T-Gate. The proceeds from the HI-5 recycling will go to Doris Sullivan and her PIAA program.
After the game, BHF2 and I briefly discussed what needs to be done over the next 5 - 10 years to build a powerful athletic presence at UH in all six women's & men's sports led by football and wahine volleyball.
For starters, there will be a new UH president within a year so a strong voice for student athletes must be on the selection committee. Make that statement loudly and clearly to the committee members.
Next, nine new regents will be selected over the next two years who will need to make a similar commitment to building our athletic programs.
Don't get me wrong - I fully understand and support the idea that UH is an academic community, but athletics can and should be a full partner in developing it.
According to first-hand sources at a major PAC-10 school, for every $1 spent by state taxpayers on supporting athletic programs, another $44 comes in from other sources to benefit teaching and research in fields as diverse as Children's Theatre to Civil Engineering to its School of Medicine.
Anyhow, there's a lot of work which needs to be done OFF the field by those of us who will not be working with athletes. I hope that there are blog post-ers and lurkers who will step up and make a commitment to make some changes in How We Do Things Around Here.
Change is Coming, folks, and we can either drive the engine or ride in the caboose.

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that both Notre Dame and Hawaii have a lot to lose by losing. What June Jones and the Hawaii teams over the past nine years have built has come crashing down with the Sugar Bowl and Hawaii Bowl games.
We just have to pick ourselves up, dust off the criticism, and start climbing the ladder of respectability once again. Hey, we aren't at the bottom of the ladder. It just feels that way.
The team has come a long way since our first game, but there is a lot more to be done before we can feel good about ourselves.
Hey, when is the next game? Let the new season begin. Let's begin the new season this Friday.

Notre Dame beat two teams this year that had winning records. They barely beat Navy and now they blew out Hawaii.
I wonder if Miano should stick to recruiting and have someone else coach the secondary. They were torched time and time again.
It's one thing to say that Hawaii has played in bowl games on a regular basis. It's quite another when you realize without the Hawaii Bowl, it would have been slim pickin's with the exception of last year.

Well the season's over, we still had a winning season but maybe not to some's liking. But then will they ever be satisfied? I am. Can't relax and sleep. This game really wrinkled my shorts! Like the Sugar Bowl, I will never watch replays of this game again.
It made me sick to my stomach that we allowed them to do what they did with no resistance! Surely there must be a behind-the-scene story to excuse what happened out there.

I think a lot of it had to do with the inability to put pressure on Clausen because of that mammoth-sized O-Line. Jameel Dowling was utterly burned for 2 touchdowns. One looked like he just quit on the play, but he actually stooped to whine about being pushed by the receiver. The guy behind me put it succinctly: "finish the play...complain later". Tim Grasso (our so-called punter) had another mediocre, lackadaisical effort and again I hope Coach Mack is recruiting a "real" punter for next year because this year was painful. Those things along with break-downs in kick-off coverage inflated the score again. Sort of in-line with the Oregon State & Florida losses. Thsi loss was not as "disheartening" or as dis-spiriting (is that a word?) as the San Jose State & Cincinatti games to me because we weren't really "in" this one. We just have to chalk it off & hope the coaches can address the concerns: O-Line, better & more consistent play from the QBs, replacing Solly & Adam & getting the secondary up to scratch after losing Ryan & a number of others.

The section I was in was very...lackadaisical. I expected alot more from Hawaii fans in my section. I yelled my throat dry anyway and I'll do it again next year.

I agree with your (12:19am) comment re: coach Miano's lackluster db's.
He's been around for years and pass coverage is a consistant weakness as far as I can see. Also, why can't the coaches teach the qb's to get rid of the ball when trapped in the back field? The tv commentators made the obvious observation right-off. Why take the loss in yardage when it's obvious UH will take a loss in downs?, throw the ball at somebody's feet at least, or uncatchable out of bounds where there's a reciever or UH player in the area?...oh well!!!???

The game was boring, but I really enjoyed all the fun things that led up to the game. Got to spend some quality time w family/friends.
That had to be one of the worst half time shows I've ever seen. At half time, we entertained ourselves by cheering for the Hawaii fans who wouldn't give back ND's footballs after they kicked 3 into the stands during halftime warmups. Ha. Was funny.
My son is home again after being in the hotel for a week, and we will enjoy Christmas morning with the family all together. I can't wait for Spring Ball!

I stayed until the very very end. Some things jumped out at me as I rewound the events in my mind. I saw Coach Mack get cheered by a small group of well wishers, and he acknowledged them. I saw each player and coach go off the field; some did not look up even while fans were clapping and showing their appreciation for the hard work, sacrifice and endless effort put out by all. And I came away with these impressions. Inoke is one super class act! Coach Mack gotta make a change early in his offensive scheme. Starting with his coaches. My prediction is he is not going to change anyone. Like Jimmy Donovan, these are two nice guys.
Let me analogize the situation. My prediction is that Coach Bolla is gonna stay another year. 75 in attendance this past Monday And they won. Monday nite, but had lost Friday nite. The people who are losing are his young ladies. He can't fire them up because in the back of their minds they remember him of last year. NO CREDIBILITY. that is Bolla's problem.
75 at the SSC! and a win!
And that, NO CREDIBILITY, is going to be Coach Mack's problem if he doesn't ask at least one to step down. i'm not saying release, i'm saying shake up.
You cannot have the 2 Lees on both sides of the ball.

Coach Mack, your oline players do not show confidence in Coach Brian Smith. I know everyone's got to start somewhere, but to start here?
The best tip I heard tonight was from a woman. She said that right away the Coach should be talking to the current players in the NFL and find out who are bright, hard working, 36-40 year old guyz whom they think could make a positive impact on UH football coaching.
I agree 10,000%. Don't get me wrong coaches, I want you all. I want UH badder.
Think of it this way coach. If you had the top 10 recruits in the nation this year on the o side of the ball, linemen, would you honestly feel confident in the coaching they'd be getting if they came to UH? Your answer would be
telling to you.

JJ had a whole mess of suspensions at SMU this year. He said that he went through the same thing in his first year here. Give the Mac a chance to get the kind of student athletes that he wants.
Some want Rolo to call plays because he was a decent QB. Some don't like Smith's job with the O-Line. But both played in this offense. What's the difference between the two? Don't equate talent and playing success with coaching ability.
Give Ron his kind of running back before you say he is too predictable. You would be too without the personnel you want. Give Cal a chance to do *something* (what does he get to do?).
A lot of the coaches are being questioned. I'll question the one that has rarely if ever been questioned - George Lumpkin. I interpreted an early explanation from Mac to mean that George is handling a lot of administrative matters so Mac can focus on coaching. But while we're throwing money around, why not hire a decent administrative person so George can either coach or ride off into the sunset?
And while we're throwing money around, remember what we may have to give up in academics if additional money goes to the athletic department. Would we lose out on teachers like Steve M? Or brilliant minds like Jason? Santa is only bringing in so much this year, let's use it wisely. We all want a great team but we also need great academics.
Otherwise I hope Santa brought all of you whatever else you wanted. Merry Christmas to all Tsaikos and non-Tsaikos everywhere!

We were wondering how come all the ND trainers were getting all bent out of shape on the field. Had security, stadium ushers and cops all congregating by the tunnel entry, conversing with ND officials looking and pointing into the stands. The crowd look like they were going off!

There was a lot of stress on the NorthShore yesterday. Watching the game was full of ups and downs. Mostly downs but then when I think about what this team went through this year, a rebuilding year. I feel somewhat satisfied that they accomplished what they did.
A lot of them are getting their degrees first and foremost and the season was not a wash out for me.
Today, they met a team that was well disciplined and executed thier script for the game perfectly.
I also watched the game to the end to see who the true Warriors are. We do have a good foundation for next year.
I want to thank all the great Tsaikos me and my wife have met and we look forward to seeing you guys again next season.
So now lets all start "Tsaiko Analyzing" the situation and come with great expectations for next year.

Sadly, I agree with your assessment of the coaches. While it may seem like a knee jerk reaction to change the staff, it was pretty evident that the initial selection and placement of some of the coaching staff was incorrect. I'm all for giving people second chances, but if they all stay and the staff is left intact, that would be a third chance as the staff did have a season to adjust.
It really is not about the winning as much as it is about showing improvement in technique, ATTITUDE and a stepped up level of a more professional, public image. if we talk about these folks representing Hawaii, I sure would not want us to appear like a bunch of ill manner, chest thumping hooligans that really have little to show for that kind of public behavior.
As a commentaror once said during a game (not UH), I wonder why players today act as they do when they score touchdowns or make tackles, isn't that what they're supposed to do? If you really want to show up someone, act as though you do this all of the time, nothing new and if you're going to show an emotion, simply smile and hand the ball to the ref or pick up the opponent you just pancaked.
I totally agree with this. If you really want to make a impression, be the best on the field and the rest of the story will be told for you.
I love the team, and as a fan and alumni, I do expect better and expect that leadership will lead.

My general take on the situation:
First of all, there is the Rule Of Three. Every new leader who comes into an existing organization - business, academia, sports, education, ministry - has to deal with this.
Year One is essentially dealing with the Former Leader's stuff - and trying to patch the holes, mend fences, and take care of bidness while making change. Watch how Obama handles Year One.
Year Two is the transition or the bridge year. By now, a lot of things have been changed in terms of policies, but there's still a lot of stuff left to do and people to replace or shift around. In the case of a sports team, there is also a need to recruit to replace people who are moving on.
The Second Year is the critical year - look at the difference Bob Nash has made so far this season compared to his first.
Year Three is the litmus test year. The Boss has been on the job for two full years, the major gaps have been addressed, and lesser priorities have moved up to the top of the list. If, by the time Hawai`i football wraps up its season in December 2010, we haven't moved along in significant & substantive ways, then it's time to move McMackin along instead.
There is a lot to be said about studying organizational management styles so this coming transitional year is when we need to stay on course and make sure that hard decisions are made.
Turning now to yesterday's game - this neophyte analyst was truly disappointed at the coaching as well as the playing. I was embarrassed for the fans, the sponsors, and especially for the players.
That's it - off to work in the yard before the weather tunrs bad again. We're recording the Celtics/Lakers game so we can take Saturn The Dog for his final Christmas hike along the Maunawili Trail this afternoon. Last year, I was still not recovered from my accident & the year before that DrDoc was visiting his family in Tennessee. I know Saturn doesn't understand how important the tradition is for us, but for our first three Christmases together, taking the holiday hike really made us feel good.
Hope everyone has a safe and happy celebration. With only two of us, it doesn't make any sense to put up with all the hassles of cooking and then cleaning up. Any suggestions for where to go out for dinner?
