Through the generosity of a blogger who's kinda shy, addaknowjoe is the winner of the two (front row!!!) tickets for tomorrow's Rainbow Classic games and two for Sunday's games. Thank you everyone for participating. We'll have another drawing Monday for the semis (also front row and center).

Belated happy birthday wishes to two of our regulars, SteveM and Chawan Cut. Both are great guys, and two of the key reasons for the growth of this blog. SteveM has been our archivist and, more importantly, the reason we became a musical blog. He's unselfish, kind and generous. And CC, as well, has been an incredible contributor. He also has been a great friend to us. We're fortunate — and very grateful — they joined us.

Tsaikos- I agree, this should be a new start for UH football... We should definitely honor the past, and the traditions, but let's never forget that we need to move forward together, fans, athletes, coaches, administration, to support the team, no matter what, win or lose, victory or defeat. We as fans, need to continue to support the team AND the coaches. Their job isn't easy, and the players, let's never forget that they're students and someone's son first, our athletes second. Sure, we lost to the Golden Domers of Notre Dame, but in all honesty, who would have thought that a new coach would have ended up 7-7, playing in a post season bowl game. Let's give credit where it's due, and congratulate Coach McMackin on a pretty darn good first season. Sure we gave up 59 sacks, sure we were the most penalized team in I-A football, but you know what, we can fix those things, and MARK MY WORD, once they are fixed, this will be a great team.

BTW, don't believe the traffic reports of heavy traffic around the malls. There was *NO* traffic this morning around the Ala Moana/WallyWorld area. Went to Walgreens and Sears and got parking real close around 7. WallyWorld parking lot looked like it usually does on a weekday morning. Guess cuz no mo good sales.

Brian Smith is a good coach who actually has a great grasp of all phases of the run-and-shoot offense.
What I think UH needs is more clear definitions of responsibilities. It seemed like Gerke and Smith were both coaching the o-line this year. They're both outstanding coaches, but I think one needs to be the alpha coach.
I'll spare everybody the story about two trees that my friend (and current stockbroker) Donn Natori used when he tried to break up with girlfriends in high school ...

Inoke Funaki at running back huh? That would be nice to see, it could cause alot of havoc with his ability to run in the open field and arm to pass as well, could be a deceptive weapon in the arsenal next year! I heard Dustin Blount might move to running back too. I know he's super fast but can he handle the pounding a running back takes at only a 160-170lbs??? To me though Pilares is our best running back and probably the best playmaker on the offense! Can Leon Wright-Jackson please step up!?!?!? Wonder if Jack Sula or Chizzy Dimude will contribute right away and lets not forget good ol Rego who should be getting more PT than just spot duty at times.
IMO, I would use Pilares in a Reggie Bush type situation and keep him in the backfield with lining up occasionaly in the slot. The JC's that have been sitting and the ones coming in look promising. Jovonte Taylor looked decent before the injury, Tinoco looked good, Rodney Bradley could be an immediate impact guy right away! Ryan Henry, Craig Bell, Matt Kiel should contribute.

and as a rider, I have to say, when I pack a guy, and that's very seldom, I either have them hold on to the back of the seat or put their hands lightly on my shoulder area....no waist, no bearhug...that's only reserved for women....LMAO....Mike can probably back me up on this one....

I like Blount as a running back, but I'm worried about whether he can block. That's my concern about Funaki, too. I would have liked to have seen Funaki at slotback. But I guess as a running back, they also can do more trick stuff.

Sorry, my point was that with all the receivers coming in and the ones waiting there turn, Pilares should be kept in the backfield until someone steps up. Regardless, Pilares should start at either position when the season begins!

ST...what is up with Heun? Will he be able to go even though he has that disc injury?? Is that something he can do PT and strength training for so as to make the area of injury stronger and less prone to reinjury??

I would like to see Funaki take a leadership role on Special Teams! I'm certain he could be the leader, and on-the-field coach on both coverage and return teams. Leadership, is earned. Mr. Funaki is a LEADER. UH needs to take advantage of that resource. IMHO....

Re: Heun.
The disc injury was really bad. But it looks like he's going to be OK. When he's in there, even when he's not at full health, he's a beast. The original intent was to bring him in as a banging running back — move the pile, knock out a defensive end — but I think now they're thinking he can be a rush end, the stand-up sort, maybe like an outside 'backer. I think that's the role that Veikune will have in the pros.

Rebuilding the oline will be tougher this go around. I thought that the strength of the line coming into this season would be the interior. I was saddened at times to see guards getting blown off the los or blocking air when defenses bull rushed or ran stunts. John will be back so we got the starting point. It will be back to rebuilding again. I say do it from the inside out. I know a lot of people talk about the tackles but I think that a pocket that collapses from the inside is the worse thing that could happen.

UH always uses a PT named Pat Hiriki (sp?) Don't think I've ever met him, but the players swear by him. I mean, they endorse him. I'm not exactly sure if they cuss.

I didn't forget just mentioning the JC guys sitting, like you said in a previous blog though we could use Avery and Tua Mahaley in redzone situations with there height and ability to catch the ball. Two guys at a legit 6'4" - 6'5", throw it up and go get it! Pollard I've only seen in spot duty so I haven't really seen what he can do yet, he has time and from what I've heard could be something in a couple years.
True though about the blocking. I think Funaki can handle but Blount is a tweener. As much as we use a one back system I would like to see Jake Heun help open running lanes as a FB. At this point it would be wise with the OLine woes. I mean we lose Ah-Soon, Lafu, Steiny, 3 starters. The returnees Kia, Estes, Pepa, Ginlack, Ieru, Hisatake are good but not great.

Somebody here suggested that Ray Hisatake move back to defensive tackle, especially if he's not being used on the O-line.
So I brought that up to Mack (although I pretended I was a genius and took credit for the suggestion). He said, nope, Hisatake is ready to break into the O-line rotation.

I hope Brett Leonard, Jordan Loeffler, Benson Ma'afala, Chauncy Makanai, Whitley Fehoko, David Garness, Kainoa LaCount, Bronson Tiwanak, Levi Legay, Sila Lefiti, Austin Hansen, Joey Lipp, Kaha'i Choy, Adrian Thomas, Tui Tuiasosopo, Clayton Laurel, and Drew Uperesa are ready to do work starting now. These JC's and young guys should reflect on this years OLine woes, take it to heart and put in the work to be successful. If I was one of these guys I would work a million times harder to earn my spot and bring the spotlight back to Hawaii's lineman. We are known for having outstanding lineman, so lets go git r' done!

How can Brian Smith be a good coach? when he coached the o-line at portland state, a ton a of sacks were given up. Same thing happened this year at UH. I think Mack tried too hard to find coaches with Hawaii ties.

If so, how come the O-line appear to play the same in
game 14, as in game 1 - NO improvement.
They give up sacks aganst 3-man, 4-man rush.
Couldn't run block either - no running game.

Smith is good because he knows the system, and he's very detailed in teaching the blocking techniques.
What I was sort of alluding to is that Smith and Gerke are both good coaches, but I think a shared coaching system isn't always ideal, no matter how qualified the teachers.

Morning all,
been in seclusion and only lurking...lot's of questions to ponder about our team and its future...I would appreciate any comments if you've got them...
With the hiring of JJ 10 years ago, he brought an offensive scheme/strategy (i did not say system!) that offered the athletes we are able to recruit a chance to compete with the top 20s and so-called elite teams. But many of the teams also run 4-wide schemes now, and high-scoring offenses...Prior to JJ, it was the triple-option and spread; again, schemes that would present the power-house teams of the 80's and 90's with something new to defend. But now that all these "non-traditional schemes" are common-place, where does that leave UH? Especially on the recruiting trail? I have not figured this out yet, in terms of strategy that may be employed. Any thoughts?
ANd of Pat Hill (or any other coach that interviewed for another school, was not hired, and remains at the same school)..are they viewed like lame-ducks? and would have a more difficult time recruiting and staffing since their intentions to leave is out there?
Hope everyone continues to have a safe holiday season! Can't believe a year has gone by already and the Sugar Bowl mania has long past.

i wonder if those mid court people would mind my sweater. it tends to get varying reviews from strech, midori7 and the others.
although it belongs behind the basket where i normally sit.
i tend to make more noise too. if i don't win em, i'll still go anyways.
hopefully those "wonderful" refs that were at monday's game don't ref the classic. one guy blew his whistle and didn't know which UH guy got fouled. two of our guys were waiting at the free throw line not knowing who was to shoot. that "wonderful" ref had to go to the K5 monitors to ask them to show him again who he thought was fouled to begin with. sheesh.

Finally! With all of the geniuses we have posting here, Tsai brings up a subject which I can provide some expert commentary on!
*ahem*
Stephen, never forget that "old fashioned" oatmeal and not the "quick oat" variety are much better for you. Cost wise, the little packages of flavored oatmeal aren't as economical as the big containers. If you add just a little bit of sugar to your sucralose, you can get sweet tasting oatmeal without jacking up your blood sugar. Bananas are sometimes 98 cents a pound these days at Safeway. They may still return to 78 cents a pound if the price of oil keeps dropping. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, don't eat too much oatmeal, or you may end up with your own very personal version of the "Run and Shoot"!

I think Stephen is exactly right; my impression for the longest time is that we have good coaches, but they need to clear up what their responsibilities are. The Smith/Gerke roles have been bothering me for a while, now. Communication could get better — I'd like to see someone be a direct adviser with Mack for clock management, maybe Lumpkin. And it always seemed like there were issues with communication between Ron in the booth, Rolo on the field, and the offense.
Watching from the UH sideline, I liked how Stutz and Smith were coaching up their players. But they need to organize on the sideline better. Players from different position groups are all scattered about. It looked awful crowded down there. I used to be a fan of letting the scout players stay on the sideline, but IDK now. I might consider getting them in the stands so that the players in the game and coaches can better work with each other.
I have absolutely no doubt our coaches know the system well. The question is, can they be effective teachers. It's like in college — you can be the foremost expert in your field, but if you aren't an effective teacher, the students won't learn. Our coaches need to self-critique, maybe get some constructive criticism from fans and boosters that can be trusted, and establish this off-season what everybody has to do to get better. The roles this year seemed hastily put together by a long-time coordinator who had never been a head coach at this high level. But that's not to say it won't get better. Maybe I've been watching too much The Dark Knight, but I can't help but think: "The night is darkest before the dawn." It seems dark now, but I'm hopeful that the sun will rise soon, and bright days shine ahead for this program.

I think a coach who applies for another job is OK as long as he backs out early and that the job was at a perceived better school. Hill to Washington would be understandable. But when Ron McBride applied for the UH job, that was a kiss of death. Golden rule: never apply for a job at a rival school.

I'm OK with many of the players being on the sideline.
I even understand big-time contributors getting passes (as long as they're on the side). But I kind of wish they'd clear out some of the fringe people. Not sure why travel agents are on the sideline.

It was at last year's US Army High School All-Star game, that 5 star stud Solomon Koehler of Castle High School announced his intent to play for Arizona.
While Hawaii fans would have loved to land Sol or any of the other athletes in that game, Notre Dame landed the most of all colleges (I think it was 9 or 10 - 5 star players). In the previous 4 years, Notre Dame also had recruiting classes that was up there with the USC's, Florida's, Texas, etc.
Just some FYI for those who previously thought Notre Dame recruited Choir Boys and Boy Scouts

I keep mine on a steno notebook; I use fine point black and green pens.

I was given a Field Pass for the HI Bowl and heard many of the Photographers grumbling about folks on the field with the Maroon hawaii Bowl Tee shirts. Many were standing in front of the photographers and not willing to move, some were standing in the player's box, some were over the line and close to the sidelines.

I said from the beginning that it did not matter who QBed the team at this point for all the reasons previously stated, and that to blame the UH's losses on Funaki at the time was unfair and wrong. Despite this analysis and commentary, the majority of you who post here argued that Funaki should be replaced with Alexander the Great, because Alexander the Great was better suited for the R&S.
Well, what happened? The only bright spot in the beating the UH took from Notre Dame was the time when Funaki entered the game and moved the offense for a score seemingly without much difficulty, at least as compared to Alexander the Great and how he failed to move the offense, holding on to the ball for far too long, thus resulting in unnecessary sacks galore.
I put this loss on Mack and Alexander the Great. Mack for failing to realize when to take Alexander the Great out of the game and to replace him with a true warrior like Funaki and Alexander the Great for holding on to the ball for way too long, resulting in unnecessary and stupid sacks.
This being said, I will now have a great new year.
I said it before and I will say it again in parting: (1) UH needs new coaches - people who know how to identify the best and then play the best and (2) UH needs to have a better conditioning program in place.

Looking forward to next season. The schedule seems a bit more favorable with Boise and Fresno at Halawa. I think the road games at Nevada and San Jose will be tough like '07.
Wisconsin had a down year and I'm sure they'll be much improved. Curious to see how much UNLV and Washington St. will improve as well.

DPK, great idea on the 220, but a better one would be that every player has to run the wilamena (spp?)rise road under an hour. going get plenty puking, laying down and gasping, but eventually their legs and lungs going get strong, so they no get their butts kicked like this year.
ST, yes the linemen (both sides) are very weak from the waist down and cannot bend over to tackle or block because they got no strength. should hire las vegas to come teach them how to develop their legs from the stomach down.

uce2, i agree totally that the coaches need to do a better job at analyzing strengths and weaknesses and do a better job at addressing them.
as for when funaki went in, i THINK and Steve Tsai can correct me but ND had already put in like there 10th string D. And more or less called off the dogs.
Steve Tsai, is this an accurate statement? I didnt notice people like that Crumbs or whatever in on D when Funaki jumped in and they werent blizting as heavily.

While on the subject of conditioning and strength, there is a huge difference in conditioning and strength. you can powerlift 500 lbs, but are you in condition to play 60 minutes. strength without conditioning is worthless, same thing visa versa. i think having PB put the team through a conditioning program, las vegas on leg strength and mobility, and bulla barking on the side would make a tremendous difference. the only problem with this is that 25-30% of the players would either quit or transfer to another program. but is that a problem??? hell no, then we get players!!!!

i can understand having favorite player(s) and trying to make them look good, but this last game should have been different. I was there for the game and when the game was out of reach for UH, I felt that the coaches should have played all of the players, especially the seniors. all of them worked to make the team, but somehow the coaches lost perspective of how each of them contributed throughout the year. PLAY ALL OF THEM, had nothing to lose, but plenty to gain because those players will remember that they played in a bowl game.

I'd say ND called off the dogs earlier than that. There were several times that ND's 2 wideouts had burned our DB's again for potential bombs, but looks like Clausen was told to throw to the short route run by the slot or tightend.
All in all, ND just looked like they wanted it more. The entire ND sideline would jump up and down whenever there was a big play. Not to mention the volume of the yelling from the ND players and fans was pretty loud from the makai side.

Sarkisian is thinking about pulling scholarship offers from players that U-Dub's previous coaches offered. The positive thing about that is that there may be some really good players available. The bad thing is that Sarkisian is looking to give those scholarships to other players, including some UH commits.
BTW, the OL that wants other coaches to know that he's available for recruiting now is 6-foot-5, 285-pounds.

It is great that so many schools are spending so much money to help their athletes with their Academics. I'm sure that the APR provides some motivation for this, but it is a great thing to do for the athletes and it is a good recruiting tool because athletes (and their parents!) want to know that they will get a good education. Sadly, I don't think that UH's budget for tutoring and Academic services comes close to $1 mil.

Nothing wrong in doing Wilhelmina Rise drill to test the endurance and lower bottom strength of all players in place of the 220s. Not asking the players to run all the way up; just run/walk to the top within a specified time. Then the coaches will know who was diligent in the off-season training and who slacked off.
To train for the Honolulu marathon back in 1982, I ran it several times, but was able to run only half way up the hill. Cramps, out of breath, just plain ole hurting in the legs and lungs. That, my friends is TOUGH.
I believe those who finish will have the same gratification/satisfaction of someone who ran 26.2 miles. It is a very personal, inner feeling that only those finishers will understand.
I also agree with Whitey, that sumo training for the lower body may well be a surprise training technique; especailly for the line-men. After all, they are in constant motion and not fixed to a machine as in weight lifting. There are 2 retired Yokozunas and 2 Ozekis in Hawaii who may just be willing to lend a hand.
Kinda reminds me of the late Coach Soichi Sakamoto who could not swim, but was a master trainer who used "home style" techniques to train his Olympic gold medalists. No fancy training stuff; only a plantation ditch filled with swift, running water where the swimmers would swim against it. I tried it and once almost got sucked into a looooooong pipe.
Our point is there are many ways to eat a french fry or climb a mountain or skin a cat. Are there any open minds out there?

"Notre Dame Summary
How do you spell "talent?" The biggest question is not how did they put a whipping on us, but how did this team go 6-6 regular season? A few observations from the sixth row and reviewing the game:
1. Man for man, they were far more talented. Their big guys were not just big, they were lean and big. On the flight back one of their defensive tackles was on the flight....had to be 6'7" and over 300 but not much fat on this guy.
2. I am tired of the offensive line getting all the abuse for sacks. A couple of things here:
A. When Farmer is in the game its kind of obvious what the defense did, ignore the run.
B. In our three wide and empty sets there were open receivers, we just waited too long to throw the ball.
C. Once any QB gets crushed a few times, he will be panicky in the pocket. A few times we did not stay in the pocket
long enough to make the right decisions.
D. Based on the single season he had to learn the offense, I still like Alexander. Rolo will have him ready for next year.
This was not his best game and had some bad throws but lots of good plays also.
3. I think the receivers did all they could and played well. Congrats to Aaron Bain for the Outstanding Player for Hawaii. We needed to get Salas the ball more by running more square ins and putting him inside on some plays. He is a play maker and he has to be utilized to a higher degree.
4. What running game? Pilares did well given his limited time. I don't think we attacked where they were giving us open space. I would like to have seen outside screens not to the receivers but to the running back based on the hard outside rush. This is technically a pass but it is part of a great running game.
5. We gave up way to many big plays on defense but when the QB has all day to throw you cannot completely fault the secondary. Our pass rush was not there. When you are going against superior talent you have to take chances, period. We cannot put four on the line and expect to come out on top. When they had a single running back we needed to be more aware of the screens, draws and back in the flat. They hurt us with him.
6. The game was lost at the line of scrimmage. Notre Dame was very good up front and created a surge on offense that at times cut off our linebackers.
Could we beat a time like this? Not when they are operating on full strength and with confidence. They came to play!

By the way, the player in the article above that was good enough for a Pac-10 school (until Sarkisian took over) is a 6'5", 285-pound offensive tackle if you go by scout.com, which would seem to fit a need for UH!
However, if you go by maxpreps, he is listed at 5'10", 280-pounds...that is a 7 inch difference in height and makes a huge difference!
ESPN has him at 6'5", 285-pounds. But they get their info from scout.com.
Rivals has him at 6'5", 260-pounds. The weight differential isn't a big deal, but the 6'5" height is important. So, I'm guessing maxpreps is just out of date.
By the way, that offensive tackle was first-team punter for the All-SPSL 3A football team. UH needs a punter...

If you look at this list, UH was indeed #120 out of 120 teams (I'm only comparing D-IA, or FBS, teams) for penalty yards per game for the 2008 regular season. UH was also the only team that had more than 1000 penalty yards this season, and the 114 penalties was the most this season.

Funny that before we beat Navy 48-41, in 1999, we previously played them in 1926 and won 33-13.

With all the hype towards the defense this past preseason I was disappointed that there seemed to be an awful lot of big plays allowed and opponents having a high degree of success on third and fourth downs. That's just my personal observation and I don't have any stats to support my observations.

it will be fun to see next year who wants it...
oline will have an influx of new talent with the likes of lacount, leonard, and others. i am not even looking at the freshmen as it is my belief that they will redshirt.
dline has some new blood too.
all in all next year is a bigger rebuilding year than this one was. but, i think that the jc redshirts of this year, new jc'ers, and those who were out this year from injuries will make for much competition that will make us a better team.

Okay, I'm simple, everybody here knows that. If we institute the 220s or Wilhelmina Rise run and stick with only one coach for the O-line, I think that will be a good start. I haven't said anything else about the O-line this season, but I feel those two things will be a lot of help. Who has that list of O-line returnees and incoming recruits? As I recall, had plenny tough kids on that list. More than enough to put together a decent starting 5 IMHO.

Too bad we lost too many participants to do the second part of the message; my kuleana there, #1 and #2 son and nephews grew disheartened and couldn't watch once it got out of hand.

I also think that this was a very tough year in terms of transition and it likely affected a lot of the players, particularly the older guys. Let's face it, no matter who replaced him, losing JJ was a big distraction. Do any of the blog geniuses have info regarding transiton years at programs, following the departure of a successful coach? Do they typically have a year where their performance is flat?
I share al's optimism about "reloading" next year. I also believe that some of the "young bloods" on the team are going to be stars and that we have the coaching to get them there. Again, IMHO.

Remember what happened when UH went to a "pro style" West Coast Offense....does 1996-1998 ring a bell? Not something I like to remember.

My concern is who is gonna step up during the offseason to motivate the guys to get together for the offseason conditioning.
On defense, only Fonoti, Satele, and K-K are players w/starting experience.
For the offense, I believe it was mentioned that Salas trains on the mainland during the offseason? Who is gonna lead during the offseason...Alexander? Lane? Funaki?
I think this offseason will be more crucial than the last one as we lost a lot of seniors and are bringing in a load of recruits and anxious redshirts.

i was awaiting an email from santa's son with some pics of his arrival on tuesday. santa came to visit 62 seniors at a local adult day care center. he led them in several christmas carols, read the "night before christmas", took photos with every senior, and in the end he left them with a most appropriate prayer.
i was hoping to post some photos, but, again the two who were tasked to send me photos had forgotten.
it is okay, but, i do want to thank timmy b. the punchbowl kid for coming forward to bring so much cheer to these folks.

Just a thought...
I think Blaze Soares could take on a leadership role on the defense this year. To me he is a guy who can bring it all the time on the field and would be a guy I would love to be around in the locker room as well as off the field. He should be fully healed from all injuries (knocking on wood), and can be the type of impact player we need to rally the boys! Nothing against Solly, Adam, and Keala, but they are like Coach Mack...a little too nice sometimes. We need an intense, crazy mofo like Blaze to get into his teammates when need be and knock some heads!
As far as off-season conditioning goes, it amazes me how players are not already working hard in the weight room, running, etc... to prepare themselves for next season. As a player I would be bustin my arse already and getting my teammates involved! After an embarrassing loss I would have a bitter taste in my mouth to get myself into the best possible shape I could. I remember seeing my boy Chad Owens running up and down Pauoa Valley and throwing weights around all day, eating right, etc...putting in the extra work to be successful. Ashley Lelie early in the morning running sprints, catching balls, etc... Basically guys who had the desire to put in the work to be great at what they did not just good! It seems to me most of the players think they're good enough or have the mentality that they want to take a break and then work out later, which is why our team is the way it is...sad!?!?!

What I mean by putting in work, is about training the right way, the smart way...
Eating right, lifting, conditioning, speed, agility, etc...
- Most guys want to just lift weights and hate running.
- Some want to just work upper body and got chicken legs
- Some like to run long distances, but have no speed
- Almost all never go on a work out diet and think that taking supplements and wasting money at GNC is going to be good enough
I mean I know most don't have the mentality that I may have but I don't understand why? You have the priviledge to play college football in Hawaii of all places, where you don't just represent the University, but the whole state of Hawaii or better yet all of Polynesia! With that being said why not go all out and make a name for yourself, put Hawaii on the map. Garrans players who work hard and leave it all out on the field will always earn respect.

Got to agree man. That's what makes good players great and great players hall of famers. It is the time you put in the off season that makes all the difference in the world.
For me I don't care who steps up or how they do it but we do need somebody with a no nonsence attitude to get into people and make them better. We need these boyz to have a fire lit under there butts to get them ready for next season. If we are to get to the next level it will take dedication by all, from coaches to players to administration. I believe it can happen but it's gonna take a want to do attitude.

Congratulations AddaJoe for finning the tickets. Shucks! I was really looking forward to getting a 6'10' 250 lb forward in my lap. Given our seats, I'd be lucky to get a t-shirt shot the Bowzuka up into our seats.
For those of you who are interested in supporting the women's basketball team, they'll be hosting the Jack in the Box Wahine Classic with Colorado and Pepperdine on January 2 (3 pm), January 3 (3 pm) & January 4 (5 pm) at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The men's basketball team plays Boise State on January 3 (7:05 pm ) and LaTech on January 5 (7:05).
The men's volleyball team returns to action hosting the Outrigger Hotels Invitational with Ohio State, USC & Penn State on Thursday, January 8, through Saturday, January 10.
That means in the first ten days of January, there will eight NCAA athletic events to attend - seven in which a UH team will play.
Hope to see a lot of Tsai-kos there.

the reason the runway lights was out wed was because kahului airport thought they were under attack, but then they realize that the unidentified aircraft was a sleigh powered by 8 reindeers and 1 fat guy going ho ho ho. me and duffer beat him home and i when hang up the biggest socks i could find and put some cheese and beer for the fat guy.
PB, that's why i suggested your name to be the conditioning guru for the warriors. i can see them starting your program, bodies laying all over the place, puke all around, moans and groans, etc. 6 wks later, they are now true warriors!!!

IMHO, losing TG was a BIG blow to the offense.
For GA to have four or five passes knocked down, why couldn't the o-line take wider splits, and what's with throwing sidearm?
Next season, I'd like to see a redshirt freshman man the QB position.

you can see what happened! Mack got through his first year okay.
But he's not going to the big dance with this crew intact in 09 with new "directives" or duties, and we'll be wondering about USC in 10. they are stuck in their minds after the multiple national beatings they took this year. garanz the coaches are gun shy! I no I no, they say they are not gun shy. but from where i sat at the end of the game, the buggaz neva look up as they went to the tunnel. ONLY Coach Mack looked up, promise. at least they could have let the die hard fans know, eyeball to eyeball, they tried their best.
i like the coaches fight for us. I feel our players never come to play, like ND came to play. and I blame all the coaches for that kind of effort.
but like al, I have hope. I hope that by writing this way the coaches no that they are coaching for Hawaii, Warrior Nation, and we expect them to work out the kinks with each other. And we expect the coaches to be better judges of personnel. And better motivators of personnel.

What a mess. Add another category for calculating accumaltive team body fat index and we probably led that too. Maybe in singing and dancing we might be near the top. But looking at the bottom line it has to be a product of mediocre or that of worser coaching. Players we read that come off the field and show bad attitudes towards their position coaches.Some showing a deference to listening.The returning QB showing a deference to getting his off the field things in order. And compounded with any sense of what the direction the offense is going in the future the foundation this year for the future is already flawed. If it wasn't for the defense we'd be in a deeper mess. Issues with cultivating an idea, a philosophy,discipline....an offense.. This team as I see it isn't any further along in development than it was last spring .If memory serves me right it was last spring that the coaches said LWJ would be carring the ball a lot this year. Let's see he carried the ball well 13 times the first two games and 14 times the remainder of the season.Was he forgotton?Nobody paid attention to him? Attention to the smallest detail is what seperates the winners from the losers is the mantra the coaches should take into the next season.

I don't think the boys would last the 1st half hour of a true conditioning session. I ain't going to lie, I get my arse kicked every now and again, especially now that they brought back the Combat Fitness Test.
Regardless though, my biggest pet peeve with the team is effort. Everybody wants to protect the players, saying they played their hearts out and left it all on the field...yeah right! So many times this season I've seen players giving up on themselves which spread throughout the whole team. Hawaii Bowl proved it, Dowling and Roberts giving up on plays, Greg Alexander looking like someone stole his dog, Receivers giving up on routes not blocking for the run, Monteilh getting spun around looking lost in space...what da heo??? If they played all out then there wouldn't be post game interviews where you hear the players saying BS like we could've done this and done that better blah, blah, blah...just excuses cause it's the same mistaked over and over. You mean to tell me you never learn from the previous 12 games during the season...ah c'mon! Anyway, I just hope the group returning and the guys we got coming in this year, play the game to win, losing is not an option. That kind of mentality needs to get drilled into the players heads. I tell my Marines that all the time, that we don't lose battles and never will, if they ask why...simple, the way we train constantly with precision, discipline and attention to detail will not allow us to. I don't even think that word "lose" is in our vocabulary. I like what Will Ferrell said in Talladega Nights..."If you ain't first, you're last"!

Anyway, I gotta agree that everything starts from the top on down. Coaches need to get there stuff together and instill discipline in these players. Not just character wise but in everything... especially execution of plays, assignments, etc... They need to hold the players accountable for their actions. I haven't seen not one OLineman get lit up for their mistakes this year. That one game where Coach Smith got the cold shoulder when trying to talk to a player...pulease...I wish one of my guys would do that cause it would be a rude awakening for them and they would regret ever doing it again garrans! I mean when experienced guys like Ah-Soon, Estes, Kia. etc... get numerous personal fouls, unsportsmanlike conduct calls you gotta wonder, what da heo is going on? If I was Coach Smith my players would hate me cause I would kill em during practice!

I do agree that Mac has access to all the stats. The stats don't tell the whole story of course...for example, UH is last in punt returns (#120 out of 120), but the punt returns improved significantly in the second half of the season. At one point, the punt return average was negative, so it had to improve significantly to almost pass Baylor to get out of the bottom.

Got an email from someone just before the power went out at 1857 last night, saying maybe going to Genji's. At 8:00 PM I called Genji to ask if they had power. Wasn't my cousin that answered and I didn't identify myself, but I heard a lot of laughter in the background and was told, "NO, but come down anyway...lots of fun". Got me curious, but we stayed home anyway.

Leaders, some say are "born" while others say they are "molded".
Perhaps, the truth is some where in between where the person "born" with certain inate skills is given the training and opportunity to refine those skills and emerge as a "true leader".
The "leader" may not necessarily be the oldest or most battle tested, but the "leader" is one who has gained the TRUST and RESPECT of his/her peers and is willing to lead, for good or bad, and that is the defining moment.
It will be up to Caoch Mack and his staff to identify these players, talk to them, and support them. And, it should ne NOW!!!
