Spring game

The spring game is tentatively scheduled for April 25 at Aloha Stadium. It will be held in the afternoon, most likely, because of repairs at the stadium. That also is draft day, so hopefully David Veikune and Ryan Mouton will be picked before then.

Through next week, the UH coaches will be working from various parts of the lower campus while the insulation system is being repaired on the athletic complex's third floor.
The football coaches are doing their work on a large round table in Na Koa's building.
The volleyball coaches are in the Stan Sheriff Center, which is why Dave Shoji is wearing a jacket at work. The A/C apparently is cranked on "high."
And the men's basketball team is in the second-floor conference room.

An update from one of the good ol' guys, former UH linebacker Mark Mollner:
Just hanging in there waiting for next year's football season to start. I sure do miss playing. Steve Gonzales and I are still very close friends and we recently joined a flag football league here in Newport Beach. Ha ha. We're probably the oldest guys, and Steve tore his achilles tendon before our first game even, He was running on a treadmill. No hitting but hopefully it will satisfy my football craving for a while. Must be a Harbor thing, as he graduated the same class as Misty May and she tore her achilles earlier this year on Dancing with the Stars.

Vegas doesn't have the type of stadium that could really generate the type of revenue the NFL is looking for. If they did have that type of stadium, I could see the players wanting to go there...and hotels have lots of rooms this time of year.

I liked Phil Lott.
I think he had the nickname Phi-la, which is why he ended up always wearing Fila shoes.
Back in the day when lockers were open for interviews, he used to want to do interviews in the corner. Then he'd let loose a "Silent Suzie" during the interview. While talking, he never broke a smile, although the same can't be said for wind.
One of the players said he used to do that on purpose. Quite a talent.

I got to see the show and thought that you and the Princess did an excellent job. I had no problems watching the replay, which was great. I probably can't watch the show live anyway because of some work obligations, but I will look forward to watching the replay late tomorrow.

Bowe used to go to the house phone, imitate me, and then send me room-service dinner.
We were at the Embassy Suites in El Paso, and when I opened the door, I could see him from across the way (it was a courtyard setting) waving and laughing. At least he had good taste.

The union representing the 'Tizer employees could show good faith by reducing union dues, give the employees a $30 union due credit every pay period, provide 0% interest loans so employees can pay off their high interest loans and get a lower monthly payment, cut a one time check of $1000 to union employees, or subsidize the union employees medical insurance premiums or contribute more to their retirement funds.
The list could be longer but I'm not use to typing so many letters in one sitting without taking a snack break.

al - I read it somewhere before but there are some unions out there that in time of financial hardship, dues can be reduced or waived.
BTW, my credit union does not have an Ariel or any other mermaid in its administration.

with so many different facets of the economy in a downward spiral, it will be a challenge for unions to keep on using "old-time" wage increse demands.
surely, there are other areas on members concerns (out-of-pocket expenses) that they could negotiate on while keeping wages "frozen" for a while with stipulations that when the economy improves to a certain agreed-on point, then they begin negotiations for wage increases.
it's like the republicans who are trying to delay the stimulus package currently debated in congress - if they become to stuborn, mid-term elections may not be as favorable as they would like - their position may be put on very sensitive grounds if more republican governors should join alaska and california in supporting passage - then it becomes who interests are their congressional members supporting - theirs(citizens of the respective state) or the republican party.
if congress really wanted to put $$$ into an immediate spending mode - they should consider giving each legitimate tax payer for the past 10 years a $100,000 stipend - deducted will be any federal and state taxes owed, child support late payments, etc. - this may amount to $35 or $40 billion, but well placed for immeditate use to pay off loans (home, car, credit cards, etc.) including business loans - all monies paid to "under age" tax payers automatically go into a "trust fund" - those without deductions can most certainly "buy" things to further stimulate the economy and get people back working and earning income which leads to more tax revenues for the state and federal govts.

A-House: Your stimulus idea in post #58 sounds like a good alternative, but I think Homey's right in his post #62 that such a plan would put the cost of it into the trillions.....$10 trillion or more depending on the number of taxpayers involved. That figure balloons over the numbers they're throwing around in Congress.
Some will disagree with me, but I posit that if the government is truly interested in "stimulating" the economy and getting the best "bang for the buck", they should be appropriating money toward infrastructure spending and the ever ubiquitous welfare programs: food stamps, unemployment, etc. These types of folks are the most hard-pressed and would spend any financial aid they receive very quickly. The permanency of the tax cuts similar to the ones proposed by the previous presidency are perhaps the worst type of stimuli when it comes to "bang for the buck".

that would come to 3 million tax payers - if you like, cut the amount down to $50,000 and go 6 million people and married filing jointly each get same amount as single person - go as low as $10,000/person if you like -point being, people will use the $$ immediately to reduce their debts - $1,000/person will make people save rather than spend.

ST, at least you guys won't be like government employees. Currently there is 11 or 12 bills targeting the employees for furloughs, wage cuts, health insurance cuts, retirement benefit cuts and a host of other things. Yours will be contracts, these employee changes will be law! Try and negotiate a change to a law! Yikes!
Anyhoo, if we fire everyone, then no need pay out anything. You save a whole bunch. haul your own trash, take yourself to the hospital, put out your own fires, we offer services only on days employees not on furlough etc...crazy situation but we all in it. Mahalo Wall Street.

a "legit" tax payer does not include all illegal immigrants in this country, prisoners, those who work only for cash and pay no taxes, etc.
it would include all those who filed a federal income tax.
as D1 pointed out, there may be fewer payers than we imagine - yes we have over 230,000,000 residents, but not all pay federal taxes.
just imagine the number of "dead beat parents" who may see very little of the $10,000 stimilus payment and children who would benefit from all that $$$.
I would use my share to reduce my "principal" balance on my home loan or down payment for a new car or donating it to UH thus putting the money back into the "system" immediately.

A-House - I had to laugh because the people you mentioned aren't even taxpayers so they can't be illegitimate .
I'm thinking an illegitimate taxpayer would be one who didn't file for several years or did not disclose all their income, credits, etc. on their tax returns.
I think there are close to 140,000 taxpayers in the USA. I don't know how many of them have been taxpayers for the last 10 years or how legit they are.

When I first suggested the "A-house" tax principle, people thought I was joking. Now, I hear it gaining acceptqnce on the talk shows, and see it back on the blog. Not such a crazy idea afterall huh? A-House - If that was my example I would not lump all people who may have inadvertently or unknowingly failed to report all income unless it is found that the unreported income is say at least 30% of their gross income. Then the government would have to look for those who claim frivolous or undocumented deductions. Now those who forget to file we gotta come up with some criteria as to why they did not file, how long they have not been filing, how much they owe, etc. Sorry for the rambling...

If I'm understanding the news lately concerning how legit the various banks were in why they needed the bail outs, etc., and sorta really not out lining what they'd do with the bail out funds????, maybe the government should tell the banks that they were just joking and now want the money back, pronto?!.....wouldn't that be a good payback??

This "stimulus" package is by no means a cure-all for the economy and it will certainly not make everything better again immediately. Anyone who thinks that will be mighty disappointed.
Instead of calling it a stimulus package, they should have called this the "Economic Shock-Absorber" package. Unemployment et al. is still gonna rise in 2009, but probably not as at large a rate than if the feds were to do nothing. The negative trends probably aren't gonna change until some part of next year regardless of what the government pushes through.

I needed to talk soi I will talk on this blog. You see, on sat, my best friend had a stoke and now is in a coma. Things don.t look good for him and it is really a downer...Garret he is Ken morita. We did every thing, gamble, travel, golf and party. He has been a part of my family for over 40 years ...Just sharing to feel better.

Just a few recruiting links to try to change the mood. Oregon just signed a JC WR, so recruiting definitely hasn't ended even though NLI day has passed. I know that Mac has a few scholarships available for players like this who slip through the cracks. Too bad UH couldn't have gotten this guy, especially since he has 4 years to play 3. Plus, he's 6'6"!

The Pac-10 got praise from the NY Times for their recruiting classes. USC was #1, UCLA was #2, Washington State was #8 (I thought they would have been last, some of those players will face UH this season), and Washington was last.

The #1 recruit in the country according to Rivals is thinking about playing in the CFL instead of going to college. The salary cap for an entire CFL team is $4.2 mil per year, but the recruit's advisor says that he could get a contract for $5 mil over 3 years. 40% of the salary cap for a single player! If this happens, more and more US high school players would look at the CFL and the college game could be hurt.

UH recruit Loeffler will grayshirt and then redshirt. I think that OL are the best position to grayshirt because it gives additional time to be in the weight program and learn technique before playing in games.

Great find on Loeffler ( I give you credit because you were the one who mentioned him first on this blog ) and keep the info flowing to Coach Mack for they can only see/hear so much. Rest gotta come from Warrior fans who actually see the players in person and then the coaching staff can evaluate the player.
Keep pouring the info from the Big Isle players, who, in your valued opinion can help UH in the future.
Coaches, make a list and check it 2xs and as a courtesy, and acknowledge the person who made the referral - no shame in doing this - matter of fact, may even BOOST your image in Hawaii and on the mainland. "little things mean a lot".

also, nothing wrong in offering a scholarship to someone who the Coaches feel the the player can make a major impact if he accepts a scholarship from UH - even if the player already has a gaZilllion offers. It's only an offer. The idea is to get UH name out there every time a sports person or magazine lists all the schools who have offered - plant the seed and a surprise may pop up.

that's why the "stimulus" package, for lack of a better word, should include a significant dollar allotment (minimum of $10,000 - $50,000) to each qualified federal tax filer/payer so we can, individually, spend the money as we want to pay our credit card debts, mortgages, car loans, business loans, etc. and purchasing much needed items such as applicances or medication or even taking a vacation putting most of the money back into circulation immediately thus creating the opportunity to create more jobs.
taxes collected will go back to the federal and state govt's and the cycle can repeat self.
like you say, better than giving the $$$ to those who don't need it as they have already bungled their chances - makes me laugh, in disgust, when high mucka muckas say that the money is needed to attract and keep the best talent available - hell, it's these very "talented" people that got us into this mess - and it's called GREED!!!
here is an excellent example of dropping a pebble into a bucket of water and watching the "ripples" go outward and back even crossing each other at many points in time.
I discussed this with a person close to a political party in Hawaii and the idea seemed to be very acceptable - maybe it can be included in the next "stimulus package" to help all of us out of this economic mess sooner that expected.

good evening all read everyone had a super time at KK on saturday night. as usual all participants and newcomers had a wonderful time filled with fuuud, fuunnn, family and frienship.
my mahalo's to homey whom played the dd and guess he made it home safely. james who besides singing can dance too...should have seen him after we left krazy's. to the other one whom I cannot mentioned drinking, instigator for his initiation of the moms with "cr". esme's mom group who provided added fun to the evening not to mention the lovely voices and new songs. nice meeting you'all. if I remember correctly they were going to plan a kk mom night and invite the tsai-ko.
plus it was really good to smooze again with the wessai haw'n home lands clan, da twins, ajoes and all others who made it a really fun night. but I expected no less since we always do it at the tgates.
if kekoa or bg gets cabana A for spring game in april I'm sure we can put together a mini tgate. what you'all say gang.

Speaking of difficult times, it was a wonderful show of Tsaiko support Saturday night when I tried to sing Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA". Listening to it must have been painful as I learned that singing along with the car radio does not prepare you for the real deal. But, I did present the Tsaiko's with the opportunity to be magnanimous and supportive...which they did...copiously, especially those blessed souls in the "back line". Thanks folks!
But, you know, that song was in my heart and just had to be sung despite the price you folks had to pay! lol Me being me, I'm slightly apologetic for the trauma, but, the only promise I make is to be better the next time!

The Hightower "H" looks similar to the Hawaii "H" but with my eyes, who can tell?
The letter "H" is not subject to copyright, it being of common usage. And if it the Hightower "H" is not a exact copy, there is no violation of our copyright. It does look as if the white "spots" are inside the "H" whereas the Hawaii "H" has the tapa on the outsides of the letter.

The saddest part about the companies requesting bail out, they are all publicly owned (stocks) and whenever they have their yearly stockholders meeting, the board rewards themselves and gives the shareholders peanuts. The shareholders supposely voted for the directors who in turn appointed the ceo's, but when a group holds 20% or more, they put their people in to rape the company. Case in point, Steve Case at Maui Pineapple Company.

Say there are 175 million taxpayers given nobody's figures of nearly 140 million tax returns, since many are joint returns by married couples. $10,000 each is $1.75 trillion
I don't think we should bail out the companies, but I don't think running up the national debt by $2 tril is going to help either. The interest on the debt is already killing us.
What's the answer? Beats me. It could be discussed all night, or, we can wait for the answer from a higher power (where are you Garret?)

People who are using XP now (like me) will be forced to do a clean install in order to upgrade to Windows 7. Now only does this mean that XP will need to be deleted before Windows 7 can be installed, but all applications will need to be uninstalled before the switch and installed after Windows 7 is installed. That insures that my computer will keep using XP until I have to buy a new one!

The numbers that nobody provided surprised me...with that many taxpayers giving significant amounts of money would really run up the debt. Too much in my opinion...because it either reaches the trillions or the amounts to each taxpayer would be too low and A-House already pointed out that small amounts didn't have the desired effect when they did it before.
But I agree that the current plan isn't going to be a quick fix and many people who deserve to be be penalized will benefit instead. I don't think there is any perfect plan and I'm sure that there is no plan that everyone would agree with. The only thing that I think that we can agree with is that we wish Pres. Obama well and we have to trust that he and his advisors will succeed in turning things around. Of course some people (like Rush) want him to fail, but our country needs Pres. Obama to turn the economy around.
I don't expect things to get better in any noticeable way until 2010 at the earliest.

Sweet! I shared the link to Princess Leila's ProBowl video with Chris Cooley's brother (who is holding down CC47's blog back on the East Coast) and he responded with appreciation!
I became a fan of CC47 originally because he was nice to CB5 when he was drafted by the Redskins. Now I am really a CC47 fan because of the way I saw him work out at the Pro Bowl! Normally a TE, Cooley played on just about every special teams play there was! Kickoff, FG, PAT, Punt, and his normal TE work on offense. He got to sit for awhile when the dee was on the field.
Can't wait to see Colt in the driver's seat with pros like Cooley.

In the early 2007 days of the "night shift" crew, one of my first blog friends was las vegas, who one night mentioned he liked Japanese karaoke. "Oh," says I, "my cousin owns a Japanese karaoke place and the next time you're in town, I'll take you there!"
"Where?", las vegas asks. When told, he says that was his hangout with all the drivers, and proceeded to name the waitresses. Small world.
In February 2008 I kept that promise to las vegas. In the tradition of Cattle Calls, I put out the first dinner Karaoke Call. Joining us were Addahknowjoe, James, Stretch, UHfan808, and Peaches. I had been to Genji's maybe 6 times in the past 19 years of its existence-- and no way would I sing outside in the lounge. None of us would sing (except las vegas) until the crowd thinned and we almost had the place to ourselves.
Now enka karaoke master las vegas is coming back--a homecoming of sorts. We will fill the Genji lounge this time and hopefully we will start singing earlier...

DPK- The Garden Island- our local rag- charges $99/year for a pdf version of the paper. That is my least favorite delivery system for an outrageous price.
To me, it's about journalism - knowledge- skill - trust- reliability. CNN is filling space with "free" stuff from "i-reporters". Who decides what is reliable information? And if someone has something good to share, do they get stringer wages? Probably not.
So- my suggestion to the HA is that they become THE RELIABLE SOURCE OF INFORMATION ABOUT HAWAII (not just Honolulu) for a worldwide audience. Maintain the highest caliber of journalists and be quick to get the information out. It already started to do that - and I can get info about Kauai faster on the HA breaking news than I can on our local rag.
Brand X is closing their neighbor island bureaus. Good opportunity for the HA to beef up their neighbor island presence with stringers in communities. Stringers with communication devices that can submit text and still and moving images to editors that can throw things online faster than CNN. Then sell the local news to the national and international broadcasters if they want.

I took note of the April 26th return of Warrior Spring football at Aloha Stadium. The T-gate alarm went off automatically. Wheels are turning to make the proper reservations for the Cabana.
BG tells me that they have initiated some changes to the reservation system. I'm sure we can work something out with them and keep everyone posted here on the blog.

Hmmm. "giving" is a funny thing. I like "earning" better. The aforementioned "spiritual solutions" encourage viewing work performed in the spirit of service to humanity as one's "worship". On the other hand it also sees mendicancy and the "get something for nothing" attitude as destructive to a spiritual civilization.
Just to be clear- I consider the Tsai-ko ohana to be among the most spiritual friends I have. It's not about privileged congregations, it's about extending infinite aloha to anyone who clicks on this site, or shows up for a football game, tailgate, cattle call, KK or fishing lesson. All good comes from Ke Akua. All we need do is love one another.

I don't know.
There is a doctrine in law which is highly loose - even undefined - called "fair use". I assume that if you paint say a Cezanne for your own use and not for profit, it probably would be OK as no matter how talented you may be, it would not be an exact copy. Paint by the numbers would be an example even if it were a copy of Van Gogh Sunflowers.
Perhaps Mojo or BHF2 might have a more definitive answer.

A-Joe ~ Remember?...Last year JD got us the hospitality room under the stadium. The Philly frilly cheese, fruit tooties and wine was ok...but certainly not in the realm of Tsaiko groceries!

still get samoa athletes out there wanting to go D1. the Jackson kid, Keaau Senior, is a scholar athlete. 6'2". not sure of his weight, probably 190, fast. solid. played receiver last year but broke his wrist. but i saw him play basketball and that bugga was always catching up somebody and stealing the ball away. had more moves than JJ.
