Maybe volleyball coach Mike Wilton should be a speaker at today's UH clinic for football coaches.
Wilton, who retires as a head coach after tonight's match, has succeeded against the toughest competition.
In the process, he never compromised his beliefs — personal or pofessional. As a high priest in the Mormon church, Wilton never held a practice on a Sunday, a day in which he serves as a spiritual leader to 160 college-aged students at his church's University Avenue branch.
As a coach, he used a meritocracy to award starting jobs. Do well in practices and matches — every play is graded — and there's a spot in the rotation.
He also took a no-pardon approach to academics. An unexcused absence from a class was deemed as great a violation as skipping a practice. This year, he benched a starter twice — each for two matches — for skipping a sole class.
He also withheld offering an All-America player a partial scholarship until he proved he would do well in school.
In the more-is-better atmosphere of college athletics, men's volleyball — with about 45 Division I/II teams — is often sneered, even within the athletic department. But think about it: there are tens of thousands of club and high school programs across the country. With each Division I/II team limited to 4.5 scholarships, the concentration of talent is immense at the college level. Many of the Fab 50 players join college teams as walk-ons. There are no Idahos on the schedule.
The Warriors compete in a UH fan's dream league: USC, UCLA, Stanford, BYU. And for all but two of Wilton's 17 years here, the Warriors were among the best. This despite a dwindling budget in which pregame meals were eliminated, travel was shortened to do away with practicing in an opponent's gym, and players sleep three to a room.
Wilton will be missed — even by those who wanted him to go away.

As fans, we all gotta look at coaches as a sum of all that they have done and endured for their program during the course of their tenure. UH has been very fortunate in their share of exceptional coaches.

I would hate for you to buy an iTouch and then find out that the new model was out right afterwards!

This articles lists David Veikune as one of the possibilities for Miami's first round pick! I hadn't seen Veikune on a first-round list before, but the theory is that Parcells wants a DE to convert to pass-rushing OLB in the 3-4 D.

The NCAA expects Universities to prevent recruiting violations on Facebook...that is tough for schools since fans putting up a Facebook page encouraging a recruit to pick their school is an NCAA violation. The NCAA will blame the schools for not finding Facebook violations, but it seems like you would need a whole compliance staff to search Facebook and websites all over the Internet!

Unless they can pick up some steam and assemble some good winning streaks, I think they'll be staying home this postseason unless they either win the WAC Tournament (in our house) or if the NCAA gives some charity bid to the defending champs (doubt it).

Garanz if the BaseBows keep it up and head into the postseason they'll probably put them in some excruciatingly tough regional (Fullerton, Tempe) if they end up with a #2 or #3 seed. I think the 'Bows are out of contention for a #1 seed now, but it'd be interesting to see how the NCAA handles UH if they do receive a #1 seed.
Those teams appointed #1 seeds typically host the first-round games at their house (or a neutral site of that institution's choice). I wonder if the NCAA would let the 'Bows host at the Les, or make them a "traveling #1" in exchange for a less difficult regional (San Diego).

I wouldn't worry about what would happen if UH earns a #1 seed and how the NCAA would treat UH badly. It is awesome that UH is #10 in the RPI right now (thank you to CRW for posting that!), but that is *far* from earning a #1 seed. UH's RPI normally drops as WAC play goes on because the conference isn't what would be considered a power conference...playing all of those struggling teams will not boost the RPI.
I scanned the rankings and didn't see very many WAC teams high on the list...that means even if UH wins out other teams can pass them because of the competition they will play.

Lunch at the coaches clinic just concluded... Gordy Shaw's presentation will leave one to have confidence that the oline will do nothing but IMPROVE this season.
Me and Koakane had the pleasure of sharing a table with Coach Shaw during lunch. I listened to Koakane and Coach Shaw discuss oline techniques and Coach Shaw gave his brief thoughts on some of our oline personel that was encouraging but continued strides in improvement remain on-going.
Nice guy with a lot of knowledge to share.
On the seniors with the oline Coach Shaw says, "too bad I only have one year with these kids". During the discussion, I take this as a compliment to their want and desire to be better.

Agreed. That's why I posted that I think UH is out of contention for a #1 seed. They would literally have to win out, and even then a #1 isn't certain. Essentially all the 'Bows have to do is not collapse and I think they're in as an at-large. As I've said previously, split on the road and take 3 of 4 at home and they'll be cruising into a postseason berth even if they don't win the WAC Tournament.

The University would need to track down who owns the Facebook page. I think that the NCAA has rules about "fake-recruiting", so if a fan of another team was found to make a Facebook page to get a school in trouble, I think that the school the fan likes might get into trouble. And the school or the NCAA could go after the fan.
However, this is a big mess because it isn't hard to be anonymous on the Internet.

I think that the best part of the RPI is that UH should make the NCAA tournament even if it doesn't win the WAC tournament. Winning the tournament would improve the seeding, but the good play so far has rewards. Given the state of some of the WAC (what happened to Fresno State?), making the tournament should be the goal and a #1 seed is almost impossible.

I felt for Matt Sisto in the first game when we went the distance and ended up with the L. Things went better in the second game.

Enjoyed the UH Spring Football Clinic, speakers were informative and insightful, Punahou coach, Kale Ane did a nice job ofsharing how his football program evolved from a bad football team to winning a first state title in school history, gave credit to phenom - Manti Te'o and his other talented teammates. KA forcast tough times in the land of "buffanblu." Chris Tormey, new Special Teams coach and Safeties coach did a great job of outlining how the 2009 version of Special Teams will be coached and the expectations of each ST phase, coach Tormey outlined each team and showed national, WAC and UH performances from 08 and elaborated on improvements or adjustments needed in order to perform at a winning level for 09, very thorough and professional presentation, when I go to a Clinic to hear a division 1A coach talk about a topic, I expect to get a presentation such as coach Tormey gave today, I hope coach Tormey and UH staff can "communicate and teach their knowledge / schemes to the Warriors" for 09 success! Coach Miano did a great job on the field explaining and demonstration defensive back fundamentals, along with Safeties coach Tormey. Tony Tuioti did a great job with his presentation of "College Bound Essentials" SAT / ACT test information, Core class needs from 9 to 12 grade, the sliding scale of testing and grade point average of Core classes. I personally know of several all-state and definite division 1A talent going to Junior College because of deficient Core class needed to attain D1 college admission. The information and resources explained by TT and UH football program will definitely help coaches, parents and young student-athletes be better informed and prevent lack of needed Core courses by the end of their HS years. Lastly, coach Gordie Shaw lectured and demonstrated his run blocking fundamentals in the morning portion and talked about pass protection during his afternoon breakout session in auditorium. Practice and Scrimmage was give and take by both O and D, several big pass plays for TD's and yards and 4 picks by the defense.

Went to the Warrior's practice and scrimmage this afternoon. And I focused most of my attention on QB Greg Alexander. And from what I can see the picture doesn't look pretty.
If I'm the opposition what I'd do is scout the films and look at GA tendencies and how he checks offs his progressions. From what I see this afternoon , in the short time, he checks to his right (waste a lot of time), looks somewhere to the left and then to the middle. So if Greg's progressions are the same all the time then if your the opposition just put your best defender on Greg's first check off, which usually is the WR or SB on the right. The reason being is that he waste so much time on his first progression. If I'm the Warriors I would certainly try to vary his progressions and checkoffs so they wouldn't make it so easy for the defense.
I mean, if a spectator, like me, can see this don't you think the opposition can see this and subsequently will be eating the Warriors up alive, especially Greg. Stop telegraphing the pass plays--this is too easy for the defense.
The receivers running the post pattern down the middle, I'm watching, have decent separation from the defenders, but Gregs spending too much time on his other progressions and checkoffs that he doesn't see the one open in the middle. How many times did I see that today? Quite a few. Come on coaches let his first progressions and check offs go to middle on the deep post, too. Gees.
Gregs transition from looking to his right and then going to his left takes too long. Most good QB can do this with their eyes, and not so much with all of their bodies, like Greg. Austin does this a lot better, with a lot quicker release and a better spiral.
A lot of my observation of Greg is that I even see him in simple drills where the QB's are throwing passes to the receivers running pass patterns, like simple flares to the flats or passes across the middle and, still, he's not hitting the receiver in stride. How many times did I see the receivers breaking stride and coming back for the ball? A lot. And this is against no pass rush or lineman blocking his vision. Not meaning to sound like a Greg hater but wanting to sound like a fan that wants to win with the best available players...in all truthfulness the QB that hits his receivers more often where they're in stride and not having to come back for the pass was Austin.
7-7 drills much of the same observation of Greg. And even into the scrimmage .Sure, a couple of passes were on the money. But IDK , I'm not impressed and I'm not feeling it for Greg right now after observing today's practice. Right now he still looks awkward, sorry.. Although that's not to say with summer workouts and fall camp he can polish up and be game ready for the season. I surely hope so. On another note now I'm beginning to realize the value of having a great QB coach from the past, like Dan Morrison, and how he molded the QBs, even the reserves to becoming decent QB's..

Saw improvement in all areas today at the scrimmage..A lot of intensity..it is starting to appear that we have a really good,deep group of receivers. Chris Black is still not playing and it looked like Otineru did something bad to his left arm or shoulder.... Raush defianetly looked like he is the #2 today....2nd game of baseball was fun..lots of Tsikos in attendance

This article talks about how the Browns will be looking for a pass-rushing LB for their 3-4 D...that sure is a high-demand position in this draft! That is great for David Veikune, though there is a lot of competition for draft position.

Of course we'll never know until it's live action and this is only spring ball but there are some favorable signs in key areas, esp. on offense: OL looks to have better fundamentals; QB's making better, quicker decisions.
...and then the flip side....
does the OL look better because the DL hasn't quite replaced what it lost from last year? True Frosh Hano and Correa look like they could be in the mix for PT at this point. Is that good or bad?
At RB, many reps given to other than LWJ. Good or bad? No one looks to erase the memory of Nasti Nate just yet....

its no secret our receiving unit will have signature speed and talent in the fall and moving go-to-guy greg salas to slot is a boost to our QBs as well as introducing greater speed at wide out and providing more opportunity for burners such bradley and taylor to strut their stuff....if salas is comfortable, this spring experiment may take-off in camp....good thinkin by M&Staff.
we not only have speed but Tinoco is annada salas-type receiver with slippery routes, velcro hands the ability to catch in a crowd. dont mean to leave anyone out, but as coach stuzz said, we got hops in the aircorps and plenty to spare.

It is interesting how Mac identifies a problem on the OL (holding penalties) and turns to Gordie for resolution.
He said, "We had 28 holding penalties last year. (Offensive line coach) Gordy Shaw is doing a good job, making sure our hands are in when we block."
Now, for flokz not schooled in coaching jargon--this comment is a luxury reserved for Corporate CEOs and a President with a SEAL commander at the helm.
Good to see our Maestro-Coach brimming with confidence, a sign that portends winds-of-change.

Looking at the Warrior's defense, I like how the defenders swarm to the ball. For it seemed like there were a lot of defenders near the action.
What the coaches will see in the film and like about the defense is that on a lot of pass completions the pass defenders were right in the face of the receivers.
Corner back play and the secondary look to be the strongest on defense. I was particularly watching the left CB-#22 Septer and say you'll be hearing his name a lot in the future (he's a freshmen). From what I saw he wasn't exposed by the receivers. He has all the tools.Another one, #4 M Hopkins CB JR, should be playing a lot--seemed to cover the WR well.
#90-E. Purcell, Left DE, has the potential to do a lot of good things on the field. Another one that has all the tools. A junior he seemed to be taller than his listed 6'3". Has long arms. Should be hearing his name a lot this coming season.
The weakness, I see, is in the pass coverage from the LB position. Watching the linebackers covering the receivers, right now, it's easy to see this is the one area the opposition will probably expose.
Overall impressions of the defense is that even though last years team graduated 9 (?) starters the replacements coming in are not that big of a drop off, especially in the DL and secondary. Right now I still concerned of the LB play.

When browsing at Coach Gordie's resume, the first thing that jumps out is his 30 years of college coaching under his belt.
His versatility stands out too.
12 years at MInn OLC, 4 years at MINN as a DL coach, was a DC at Idaho, an OC at N Colorado and S Dakota...wherever he went--success followed by the numbers.
He is cross-trained in all phases of football-grid, trench warfare.
Like a special forces green beret who is cross-trained in 12 specialties--CGS has experience in OL, DL and served as an OC as well as DC.
Take JJ, our former offensive-minded guru.
Most thought that he was pass-n-route guy.
JJ was a genuis at pass blockin and setting up blocking schemes and he was smart enuff not to write anything on paper, less it show up on amazon.com under a different
name.
It makes sense, to be good at one position and defeat your opposition--you must be schooled in counter insurgency--and know what your opposition is doing or how they will try to do it.
That is the knack of Coach Shaw.
His template for our OL is based on schemes that counters the D.
Naturally, we need to focus first and learn count-discipline as well as hand-to-hand-technique.
Dont forget the conditioning part too.
I have hunch these problems will be addressed and resolved--sooner than later
