Practice No.12
By Stephen Tsai
Inoke Funaki continues to impress as a running back.
A coach marveled at Funaki's abiity to "get skinny" on rushes, vernacular for being able to run without ever getting hit squarely.
Also during today's pactice:
• Cornerback Jeramy Bryant had the gutsiest play, taking on center John Estes on a sweep play. Bryant is expected to win one of the corner jobs.
• The most impressive play was defensive end John Fonoti chasing down slotback Ryan Henry, who had at least a 3-yard head start on the rest of the defense. Henry can run 40 yards in 4.5 seconds.
• Slotback Rick Taylor was on crutches with an injury to his right ankle. He will undergo X-rays today.
• Defensive tackle Quentin Beaver did not practice because of strained rotator cuff in hiis right shoulder. He suffered the injury last week, then aggravated it during the past Saturday's scrimmage.
* * *
Today was media guide day. Players filled out info forms that will be used in the media guide. They also posed for pictures. Two rules: 1) shower first (they took turns wearing H-logo shirts), and 2) no jewelry. Safety Lametrius Davis had to remove his four ear studs.

hey!!
April 20th, 2009 at 10:47 am
Hiya!
April 20th, 2009 at 10:48 am
Who was the defensive end chasing Henry? My guess would be Tui.
April 20th, 2009 at 10:49 am
So who was the DE who caught Henry???
April 20th, 2009 at 10:49 am
top 10?
April 20th, 2009 at 10:52 am
ST:
JMHO, but it seems that someone/body at Baseball America must think much more highly of Sac State than Nevada.
UH loses to Nevada, at Nevada, and gets dumped out of top 25. Next week, UH takes 3 of 4 at home over Sac State and climbs to #20!!!!!!
Is that respect? Just great to see the Rainbow baseball being rejuvenated and back to prominence.
April 20th, 2009 at 10:55 am
top 10?
April 20th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Is Funaki ahead of LWJ now? Any updates on Libre? Does Chizzy or Green have a redshirt year?
April 20th, 2009 at 10:57 am
And the injuries are already mounting... hopefully nothing serious.
April 20th, 2009 at 10:58 am
Hello
April 20th, 2009 at 11:02 am
Great game with BaseBows yesterday! Congrats on a share of the lead in the WAC!!
midori7 - I think that you are going to have to stay home, 'cause Vinnie hits HRs when you aren't there.
Koakane - on the WAC site is says BSB not MSB...which stands for Mahu Softball...I think Pride explained it to you and gave you some of the pitching wrist action requirements for that league.
Stretch's FAVORITE player for Sac State...definitely Blake Crosby.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:02 am
morning every1...kudos to da baseball team, 7 runs total iirc correctly given up by the starters. not too shabby at all. if they can keep it up and we can get consistent production from garcia, montplasiar, morford, roquemore, and van dornum, watch out...
on the other hand, big thumbs down to kkea 1420, how you gonna not bring uncle don to las cruces for a top 20 team. inexcusable, imho
April 20th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Heal up wounded Warriors!
Hello Rob25.
No worry about the rankings. As long as the Bows take care of business in the WAC then it's hello NCAA Tourney. If not then hopefully the committee will see them as a worthy tourney participant and award them an at-large invite.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:07 am
Whoops. I did forget to originally type in Fonoti's name.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:09 am
ST- isn't there something missing?!?! either a or the defensive end or the name of the de???
April 20th, 2009 at 11:11 am
So rob25 BSB stands for boys soft ball?
April 20th, 2009 at 11:11 am
ok, ok, ok.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:11 am
Take turns wearing the H-logo shirt? Reminds me of back in the day when you had to share graduation gowns when taking yearbook pictures.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Hey homey!
I will see you late in the day on Saturday. Doubt that I will get there before 11:30 and I'm bringing the pocho sausage from Maui for Koakane to grill.
Isn't Don Robbs the decision-maker at KKEA?
April 20th, 2009 at 11:14 am
top twenty
April 20th, 2009 at 11:15 am
KK - lose money having a conversation about this with you. You were the very same person who insisted that Sac State wasn't part of the WAC.
Wassa matta you?
April 20th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Rob25 - by the time you come we gotta start cleaning up!
Sac State is in the WAC?
April 20th, 2009 at 11:27 am
eh, get it right, you forgot his middle name. Blake "the crybaby that can't run" Crosby. You think he heard me?? I hope he never get mad.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:27 am
Note to self... no pick an argument with Rob25 or Ronnie when it comes to Warrior sports...
Whoosh!
April 20th, 2009 at 11:29 am
Stretch - are you getting your tickets for Washington State from UH? Are you going to the Seahawks game on Sunday?
My friend, Gabby, wants to watch the Rams play, so we are going to stay an extra day in Seattle, if we can get tickets for Sunday too...
April 20th, 2009 at 11:30 am
Hi Rob!!!
Hi Liz!!!
Hi homey!!!
April 20th, 2009 at 11:31 am
Stretch - I meant the Washington State game...
April 20th, 2009 at 11:32 am
4 in a row... kind of lonely
April 20th, 2009 at 11:32 am
Hi Ronnie!
April 20th, 2009 at 11:34 am
Ronnie - I will try to get the tickets through UH for the WSU game. I'll check back with you when the notice comes out.
I am sure tickets are going to be avaialble for the Sunday game. Can always go through StubHub although you might have to pay a premium.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:35 am
Ronnie - Stretch already on lunch...probably since like 10 a.m.
Stretch - I'm pretty sure he heard you. I think that was his Dad sitting behind you cheering loud when they would score....nah, just kidding. That guy was irritating! Why couldn't he go to their cheering section? I was telling Dara to "Fear the Cheer" and it was so apropo is regards to you! Honestly, I like it!
April 20th, 2009 at 11:35 am
Heh Ronnie!
April 20th, 2009 at 11:36 am
Stretch - Or is his middle name Blake "the whiner without wheels" Crosby?
April 20th, 2009 at 11:37 am
John Fonoti should be promoted for post-season honors. My feeling is that Fonoti is a game changer. Some athletes will change games because of their speed and atleticsm. Fonoti changes games because of the way he hits you. Once you get hit by him, you will do whatever it takes not to get hit by him again. He will change what offensive players do throughout the course of the game. I think Kazz would refer to it as "fear and intimidation". Opponents will shake and shudder when they feel him in the vicinity. It's difficult to focus if you're afraid of someone. If he ever learns to play in the "unconcious competence" quadrant, he will be a force to reckon with at this and the next level.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:39 am
"getting skinny" is a knack, Inoke, no doubt learned from being a QB. No different than slippin jabs and punches for a boxer, only thing u do with your bod.
but, yes, many RBs at UH somehow didnt learn or werent taught and if u do grasp the idea you will live longer.
Kealoha Pilares has improved but, yikes he was getting battered in his frosh year by not "angling" before contact--good stuff on Funake.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:40 am
April 20th, 2009 at 11:40 am
There goes Pride. and his quadrants again. Teaches me not to pay attention in Analytical Psychology class.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:41 am
John "fear factor" Fonoti... has a nice "rrrriiinnnnnggg" to it...
April 20th, 2009 at 11:44 am
Pride. - never mind about the gowns...
April 20th, 2009 at 11:44 am
is that what you was yelling at him?? sorry, I couldn't hear you.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:45 am
are they holding signs with their names?
April 20th, 2009 at 11:45 am
Thanks Stretch. I think it is more fun to sit in the UH section for away games, except for UNLV since half the stadium will be the UH section!
April 20th, 2009 at 11:46 am
wf2 - I would think "getting skinny" is more of a natural thing then being taught it.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:47 am
Jon Fonoti is due, i noticed more muscle on the torso.
He needs to improve on the run to his inside or straight at him to establish himself as a bonafide top WAC DE.
best wishes to Fonoti--he can!
April 20th, 2009 at 11:48 am
Pride,
a wise man (LP) said a long time ago about motivation..." fear and pain are the 2 best motivators for the human being; however the fear of pain is the greatest motivator"
and we derived that from the Hula-T? haha
April 20th, 2009 at 11:48 am
"getting skinny", obviously never ever heard that term before.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:50 am
April 20th, 2009 at 11:52 am
why do they have to share shirts? aren't they given certain non-uniform apparel? or did the not trust the guys to bring their shirts and wanted to guarantee uniformity?
April 20th, 2009 at 11:53 am
homey, yes n no. some runners have natural instincts to avoid square hits and others learn through hard-knocks.
Also, it is a matter of degree, on a scale of 1-10.
kealoha as I mentioned learned from year-one to year-2 to avoid taking big blows by duckin or twisting or divin. when you're hit u keep moving. but yes, it can be learned.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:53 am
Bulla, one of your friends from church who had the tackling record up until this past season, is still living by that mantra, "the fear of pain is the greatest motivator". He learned from the master of the Hula-T. Just got that look in his eye.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:54 am
i agree with you homey. it is instinctive.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:56 am
Pride,
interesting about Tony Robbins, I would have to defer to LP because that would have been back in the '70's and I don't know how old Tony Robbins would have been back then....hmmmmmm
and the last time i tried to 'get skinny', i was wedged between my car door and a Dodge P/U truck that thought the lines in the parking lot were for everyone else....talk about a 'compromising' situation, haha. good thing can laugh now, couldn't at that moment.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
Howzit!!
Liz - from last post - as a long-time Redskins fan, could someone with some common sense, please buy the team. The 'Skins will never be contenders with Synder as the owner.
Don Robbs is not a decision maker at KKEA. You wanna protest, give Randal Ikeda (da GM), or Chris Hart (I think he's the program director) a piece of your mind. So, are they not doing away games at all anymore (except for football and men's basketball?).
April 20th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
Hey gang...good afternoon...hope all is well with everyone....busy busy...check back later...
April 20th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
Pride,
and they say those trucks are Ram-Tough, wasn't tough when i left my foot imprint in the door panel.....ooops sorry, i slipped sideways....yeah, right.....or left
April 20th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
Happy birthday Jesse.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
pride.
long time no "see".
i would toss in a healthy blaze soares, rj k-k, and brashton satele as bigtime hitters.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Bulla, turn the other cheek next time. It's a new you.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Afternoon Tsaikos!
Congrats to the Baseball Bows! Good to see Jared Alexander have a solid outing. Back to back homeruns - NICE!
Rob25: how's about I leave my seat when Vinnie is at bat?
Ah, Blake Crosby...should've gotten tossed in Saturday's 2nd game.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Al, no forget Mana Lolotai. He got the genes working in his favor.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
Pride,
that was BC dayz, haha, what an excuse, now when i turn the other cheek, the whole car moves.
all is good, i'll set up a cc sometime during the week of May 4th for 'the beast'. he's looking forward to seeing 'the uncles' and a few aunties also, haha.
he is going to be at Derby's Clinic on 5-3-09 at Kaimuki High School as an invited returnee from Coach Derbs.....should be fun, a kodak moment or two....
April 20th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
al
oh wise one, it has been too long my friend, hope all is well with you and the ohana
April 20th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
a happy happy bday to James,
and many more
April 20th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
i thought that the university should have given wilton a better send off on his final night. however, knowing the character of mike wilton he probably deferred any accolades to his seniors on this the "seniors' night".
but, they did get it right and produced this nice public exit interview on the hawaiiathletics.com site.
http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/index.aspx
April 20th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
I've been trying to "get skinny" since the 10th grade.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Hi Al, been at least 9 days?
April 20th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
i'll be anticipating your call. looking forward to seeing our wildcat. btw, that is a great description for the beast, wildcat, that is how he plays.
it is good that the derby show is at kaimuki hs. there is always a lot of potential at that school just got to keep them in school. here's an idea, maybe the beast can give a brief 15 minutes of what it takes to get eligible for college.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
oh, that's right pride. has it been that long?
April 20th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
matt foley, sounds like he has the attributes to be regular tsaiko.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
bulla, i haven't seen that much of mana lolotai, but, if dna has anything to do with the ability to lay a lick, then, yes i can see your point.
i am also looking forward to seeing the other lolotai in action. i believe they are of the same bloodline.
(btw, weren't they family of one proud. tsaiko?)
April 20th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Livin Large...
I think I re-qualified myself as a Tsai-ko -sized eater this past weekend...
oh
Lunch time!
April 20th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
wassup tsaikos.
very happy belated to JJ.
sorry late my bruddah, i been busy at work.
have a good day.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
hb day james?
didn't you just celebrate one recently?
so what, are you 39, oh 40 now.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
re-qualify?
wait, i've witnessed you handling a nabeyaki udon with a side order, er, full order of oysters on a half in one brief and swift encounter.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
Howzit Everybody,
I just came on to say, Mahalo Uncle Mike Wilton for everything you have given to us. You have brought our program to outstanding heights and I would just like to say thank you. Good luck in the future and look forward to seeing you on the BYU bench next season. Aloha
April 20th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Koamahu makes JJ feel 39 all over again..
April 20th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
My bad...he used to be general manager. Guess ESPN didn't see fit to keep him on.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Gosh...I hope that I don't get SMU'd for that last post!
April 20th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
hi robbie!
April 20th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Pride,
yes, that former record holder you mentioned definitely lives to that mantra to this day. he was very helpful in our recent golf tournament, and it appeared as everyone from the Matson ohana had a good time....
April 20th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
blake crosby.....i kind of feel for him.
tough to be in the shadow of an older brother who is the starting shortstop for mlb's oakland a's.
yup, its tough trying to live up to the legacy of a sibling who is at the pinnacle of his profession.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
al,
in ref to Derby clinic, it is for all HS linemen, he just uses Kaimuku HS and Moanalua HS to hold the clinics there....
April 20th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
Rob - da current GM is a bean counter by training.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
ralph,
that was 39 right, i didn't want to see that 'other' number up there, for that would really make him feel good, you know, the upside down 9 next to the nine....
April 20th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
wf2 - Those that need to be taught to be skinny get hurt more than those who just know how to get skinny. The great ones know when to get skinny way before an impact is to occur. Either that or they just make an ankle breaking move and they are gone.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
trying to live up to someone is tough but trying to act like someone is wrong. he took a third strike, stood there and argued with the umpire. he should have been tossed from the game. I think he is watching too much MLB.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
stretch,
thanks for clarifying. i haven't watched my dvr of the game yet.
are you the "ombudsman"?
April 20th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
bulla,
wasn't derby at central union church for awhile?
yah, i was aware that it was for the hs boys. having it kaimuki, to me is good, perhaps that will get them out there. you know the new football coach is pushing for them to attend.
i thought that ryan could be a great role model for them.
hopefully, desmond tautofi will be there too. i think he'll make a very good offensive lineman. he has that same athleticism as his siblings david, darrel, and daniel. he could make a name for himself being the only brother to play offensive line in college.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
al - Stretch, er, I mean Rob25 is the "instigator".
Bulla - No forget if we go cc at Camellia, they have "skinny" parking.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
I am glad someone knows the TRUTH!!
April 20th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Remind me not to park next to Bulla!
...unless I driving homey's truck!
April 20th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
d1.....flashback! if i recall you did once drive homey's truck.
mwahahahaha.
don't the stalls get skinny after lunch?
April 20th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
....much rumblings about a CC being posted today.
Hmmmm....
Did I mention that I am off on Thursday and was planning to meet Kazz at practice as he is also off this week?
April 20th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
al,
Wasn't me who drove his truck that time but I did observe his attempt at astronomy from the bed of said vehicle.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
The real bad thing about Blake the whiner is he is batting over 400...Stretch did everything he could to lower that average..Rob 25 was doing her part also..honestly you have not experienced a baseball game until you sit with those 2..and Stretch was not even drinking....
April 20th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
anyone want to do a mini-cattle call at jack-in-a-box?
http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artikkel?Dato=20090420&Kategori=BREAKING05&Lopenr=90420051&Ref=AR&Show=0
(except in hilo, sorry, bighilof2)
April 20th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
sshhhhhhhh, taunting is not allowed. Although I have nothing to worry about until the last game of the season, Senior Night.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
With any smart intelligent geek we like to tell them:
"You can explain to us the meta physics of the earth's gravitational influence on the moon's orbit and we'll tell you how a vagina feels like."
April 20th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
damn, no Jack in the Box here on Kauai. I actually ate lunch at Burger King today.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
al, I'll meet you at the Kapahulu one
April 20th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
jojo, i'll pick you up and we start from kapahulu and venture around the island by nightfall we should be full.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
hey, who was that guy?
homey they made us siamese twins!?
wait til i catch that guy.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
#98...ok, who's the wise guy? It's funny though.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
I'm thinking Thursday's practice will be a short one followed by pool activities.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
al, just remember that there isn't a jack in the box between Kapahulu and Waimanalo, so no need scenic route.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
#96:
Have you seen how small those burgers are? How can you have one KK if can eat the burger in five bites or less?
April 20th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
I don't wanna know what #98 is about
April 20th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
jojo,
That's the way home.. for digestion.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
CRW, hence the "mini" CC. Only get small meal.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Before starting up all over again...
April 20th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
We should do a "mini burger eating contest". Who can eat the most in a set amount of time??
April 20th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
ahhh, Domo MIH. I figured that a milk shake would help me digest.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
jojo---More like snack. Bwahahaha!!!!
April 20th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Yippee yi yeh mini sirloin burgers!
Yippee yi yo mini sirloin burgers!
April 20th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
stretch
only if dpk cannot enter.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Stretch- you like we go make that contest at this weekends' tailgate?
April 20th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
jojo
did kaimuki grill open already?
April 20th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
Is the Tsaikogate going to continue after the Warrior Bowl??
April 20th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Ajoe - I don't think that would be a good idea. There might be a few uncomfortable Tsaikos rolling into the Stadium.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
al...I think I drove homey's truck...LOL
April 20th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Stretch - We are all driving to the Stadium parking lot before the game starts but I'm in for a couple after the game. Gotta rush home for dinner thereafter.
April 20th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Stretch- I like that:
-Some people eat until they full.
-Some people eat until they tired.
-Tsaikos eat until they uncomfortable!
April 20th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
My truck hasn't been the same since...
April 20th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
(j)j......is that what you remember?
were you in "shape" to drive that night?
was it just your bday?
have you seen the doc around?
April 20th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
ajoe.....you being a real instagat today aren't you?
and rather kolohe if i might add.
boy, if asports only knew..............
April 20th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
al - maybe a-joe is really a-sports who is being advised by ROB25.
April 20th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
wassup doc.
wea she stay?
she busy?
Man, I miss her wonderful stories of playing in bands and touring the country.
I miss her recruitment speeches and me sadly telling her no.
I miss how everyone slowly leaves us alone so that we can engage in long deep one sided conversations.
(J)J- if you ever see that girl struttin' her stuff around the halls of the capitol, give her a big "WWAAAZZZUUUUUUUPP!" from me. Tell her stop by and give us all a shout out here sometime soon.
She going come to the Tsaikogate?
Shucks, she must be busy.
April 20th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
A-Joe - And how do you miss gigi?
April 20th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
My kid would win hands down, al can attest to that!
April 20th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
homey- passionately!
I wish she would dismount that lodged 2x4 and come back to visit us. I really enjoyed reading her takes on football and life. Unique.
April 20th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
duffer- I can second that attestment.
April 20th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
I heard that the Doc's were at the football practice on Saturday. Anyone who was in the stands say Hi??
April 20th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
They were at the bball and vball games too.
April 20th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
"Hubby likes ox-tail soup, but it gives me gas," and comments like that, didn't add a whole lot to this forum, so some things are better left as is.
April 20th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
I guess the Docs will be coming to the t-gate then...Yeah, hi-5 recycling!
A-Joe - 2x4? I think a 4x4 offers better support.
April 20th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
as the infamous one would say NO WORRY BEEF CURRY bwhahahahahaha

I hope that the Warriors know that the cannot drink Vitaminwater or they could fail the NCAA's drug test.
April 20th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
letsgowarriors: Sounded like a question about the returning guys who are working at new positions. Think Stutz just mentioned Lane as a returning guy, even though he didn't move positions. That's what I thought, at least.
April 20th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Article going into depth on why Miami traded Samson. Amazing that their judgement about Samson having trouble blocking Jenkins comes down to *two* plays that Samson was 1-on-1 blocking against him.

Attention: Tsaiko Para Legal Beagles
Re: Hawaiian Airlines, et al.
Have any of you ever noticed that when you have to change a flight departure time at the last minute, HA is one of the airlines that nails you with an additional charge of no less than 50 bucks? Even if it is only the return portion of your trip!
However, when they change your departure time on both ends of your reserved R/T, they expect you to take it or cancel it with no questions asked? Any request for an upgrade, or any discount of 50 bucks per ticket is scoffed at. For 3 tickets, we are talking $150 for one way cancellation, or $300 for R/T.
They don't care that you have plans at the distant end that involve arriving at a certain time. They don't care that it causes other people who are meeting you at a certain time to have to alter their plans. They don't care that you had a rental car in place for pick-up, or lodging to check in at a specific time.
What can I...Kekoa Q. Public...do to make things Pono? (besides using deadly force). I thought there was a "Passenger's Bill of Right's" that some smart alecky lawyers put together to thwart the airlines from bamboozling the passengers like this?!
Anyone else traveling to Vegas for the UH game had better keep a close watch on their 'confirmed' reservations from here on out.
April 20th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Most times the center gets some help from a guard on running plays against elite NTs in the NFL. NTs get the elite tag when they cannot be dislodged by a single blocker. Blocking Jenkins successfully 3 out of 5 times when they were 1-on-1 is probably a good percentage for an NFL center, and the 81.3% overall success vs. Jenkins is well above the NFL average.

homey - bwhahahaha.
April 20th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Kekoa - I think *all* the airlines do the same thing. I have many stories about flight cancellations in mid-trip. United charged me an extra $100 per tix ($300 total) to change "routes" - from MIA-DEN-HNL to MIA-DEN-SFO-HNL, and in the end, we skipped the DEN-SFO leg anyway and went straight through from DEN. Never did get our money back.
BTW, did I mention these were "free" tixs?
April 20th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
One time, my Dad (who was 300+ lbs and had to squeeze into a seat), my Mom, and I sat in a plane for over an hour, waiting for our red eye flight to take off. Finally they told us that the problem couldn't be fixed, and that the flight would be delayed to the early morning. While we had the luxury of returning home to sleep for four hours, all we got was one voucher for a cab. Yeah, we used that to return, but what about going back to the airport? And it's not like that voucher was worth much, when you consider we live in Salt Lake. That was a $6 cab ride back then. Not to mention, we had to wake up my sister and tell them about the change so they could meet us at the right time.

Flight updates are a funny thing. My flight from SEA to LAS for the UNLV game was to leave about 6p so I would have time to teach a full day and still make my flight. Yesterday I received a message that my flight time was changed to 3p the same day.
How the heck am I supposed to teach, and make the flight time if school gets out at 2:30p and SEA is an hour away!?!?
I called the airline and they told me I could change my flight but it would cost me more. HUH?
Does that make any sense if you are not the money grubbing airline?

What?! Free Mini Burgers?!
No worry al, some of us are so far from getting skinny that we'd be happy just to be "pleasingly plump". The Mini Burgers are safe, I only eat beef once in a great while these days.
I guess the free Mini Burgers are the reason that the Jack in the Box on Ward was blocking traffic with all the customers trying to get in today as Sweety and I drove by.

I found out that our Delta flight (LAX-HNL) this June was pushed back almost an hour when my brother forwarded to me the email he got from Northwest (he bought a ticket on the same plane through Northwest). I didn’t get anything from Delta.
When I went to check our seat assignments, I found that they had all changed – so I had to set them again… At least it didn’t cost any more – yet…
April 20th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
Thanks Duffer ~ I'll be tracking this *Passenger Bill of Rights* legislation as it makes it's way thru Congress.
But for now, I want them to know that they are dealing with an irate Tsaiko on a mission to support the Warrior fb team. I'm going to bang on a few doors until I get what's fair.
Duffer ~ Who should I put in a choke hold first?

Hawaii a cinderella-candidate to host a regional site?
Well, its still 5 weeks until the NCAA selection committee announces the 64-team baseball tournment, but ESPN's Jeremy Mills has Hawaii marked as a cinderella-candidate to host a regional site.
Mills does a weekly survey and named Hawaii as a possible site if several others dont pan out.
Currently he projects Hawaii to win the WAC Tournament and the only WAC team to be selected in the 64-team field.
Hawaii is projected to play in the Baton Rouge Tournament.
Baton Rouge Regional: LSU, Hawaii, Boston College, Southern

It appears Funaki is the top back.
At the moment.
One of the coaches told me that he thought LWJ had a cracked rib.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
get this...i had to pay a $30 change fee for a $38 ticket on HA. pfft!!!
April 20th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
If not for bad luck, it seems LWJ would have no luck!

wafan #170:
What airline you flying? Alaska?
Regardless, check your airline's Contract of Carriage. If they initiated the flight time change, given that 3 hours is quite a stretch in time difference, in some instances you might be able to either:
a. Ask to be placed on a different flight at no additional charge.
b. Receive a full refund.
You probably already exhausted your options, but that's just something that came to mind.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
CRW . . .
Thanks for the heads up. I just got off the phone with one of my girls who works for Alaska. She's checking into options for me. But, it does not look real good right now since they actually cancelled the ~6p flight because of low seat sales. The option seems to be an even later 9p flight.
You would think that five months out they would leave things be until it got closer. Interesting.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
Stephen,
Is there any possibility of a QB controversy coming out of Spring?
April 20th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Someone (I think Curveball?) did mention on Saturday that LWJ had his ribs wrapped.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Liz,
The coaches are not worried about surprising the first team UH plays this season...UH opens with Central Arkansas. The coaches need to find the best players for the offense, and then they need that group to develop some chemistry together.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Too bad to hear about LWJ possibly being injured. It is good that the Warriors have depth at RB, but it is sad to think about how his promising career never seems to be able to get going. An injury now could drop him down the final Spring depth chart, which would make it tough for him in the Fall when the new players arrive.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:41 pm

April 20th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
letsgowarriors: Hmm, that's an interesting thought. If anything, though, I might think that they'd move Satele to the outside, since he's had some experience playing there before. Then they can plug Mana into the middle.
But yeah, I've been a fan of Mana for two years already. Glad to see everyone is finally jumping on the bandwagon.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
mana played outside in high school and he probably has more speed than brashton.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:53 pm
d1:
Mack said Alexander is a guaranteed starter. I think all three appear to be even.
Mack said Brashton Satele lost his starting job. But then he was with the No. 1s again. And now he says Satele is his middle linebacker.
So the answer ... I dunno.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
Some suggested Brashton should be a DE.
But, well, see post No. 197.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Thanks, Kekoa and wafan!
April 20th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Hmm, good point, letsgowarriors. I really do like Mana's ability to run, he's got some good speed.
And yeah, if there's one thing Mack is terrible at, it's speaking to the public. It was nice to see Mack at the Nā Koa lunches, but I preferred seeing the assistants; they did a much better job at breaking down the film.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
then again, satele isnt exactly iron man and has yet to last a full season, so maybe better if mana stays at MLB...who knows...
April 20th, 2009 at 6:00 pm

April 20th, 2009 at 6:26 pm

Jason ~ After the scrim on Sat., LWJ came in front of us to meet his girl and show her his *injury.* When he lifted his jersey (Koamahu would've passed out) he showed her a bruise just below his left rib cage. Dang... I hope LWJ's injury is just a bruise. I'd like to see him have a break out season along with Inoke. We need RBs who are a serious threat so that the Oline feed on that potential and really lay the block and make gaping holes.

3-9 after 7.
2-11 when trailing after 6.
4-9 after 5.
7-9 after 4.
6-7 after 2 and 4-4 when trailing after 1.

Note from last night: I agree that interaction between teachers and students work better face to face. But times are changing and one day I think most undergraduate education will take place on the internet. If that happens, lots of things are going to change, including sports.

el guapo,
I do not disagree with anything you said in post #230, but I think it will be a long time before things change to the point that it will affect sports. I agree that a lot of majors could have most or all of their lectures given via the internet...but for education I focus on engineering and students really need to go to a place to do the labs. Things might be different for history, government, or computer programming classes, but other things like physics really need a lab too.

They're laughing and joking and talking about playing Rock Band2.
And then as soon as I whip out the camera, they go into their angry look.
Take the shot, then they're smiling and laughing again.

Great Morning All!
Regardless of how they "strike a pose", the Warriors are beginning to look really good where it counts - on the field.
Have a great day erryboddy!

Kenny Zuckerman sure does represent a lot of players with Hawaii ties.

There are a lot of D-IA recruits on Maui, and UH having a practice/scrimmage there is a great way to help influence recruits and their family and friends to look even more favorably towards UH.

The NFL messed up their schedule in relation to the Fiesta Bowl. With the schedule already released, it will be interesting to see what the Cardinals and the NFL do to make it up to the Fiesta Bowl.

Oregon State has been trying to figure out how to cut their Athletic Department's expenses, with their financial situation sounding similar to UH's one (though they don't have a big HF deficit to deal with).

to the people in the know
what does it mean when you hear football coaches say, "we practice like an NFL team"?
reading the recent NY Times article and quotes from the Florida coach, Urban Meyer, he said," the biggest difference in college football today is that a lot of college teams practice like an NFL team". He goes on to say that this new concept was going on since the early '90's. And he even observes how high schools are beginning to practicing like how an NFL team conducts practices.
Remembering a Coach Jone's quote from the radio. A caller had asked, "How come I don't see your team running sprints at the end of practices". And Coach Jones replied, even back then, "that we practice like an NFL team".
So surmising on my part does the term "practicing like an NFL team" mean that the players on the football team are responsible for their own individual stretching, calisthenics and running outside of the practice and on their own time?
Watching last Saturday's Warrior practice, for example, I observed how the players would do some perfunctory stretching and then boom right into their drills. This was taking place about 15-20 minutes before practice, and the players were with their respective groups. The OL, I was watching, were seated on the ground stretching their thigh muscles and then the next minute they were gathered working on technique drills, both passing and run blocking.
When the 300pm horn started commencing practice, I'm thinking, now, they'll probably start their calisthenics and stretching. But no. They then went into 5 minute drill of 15 yard one quarter speed runs-forward, backward, sideways, high stepping etc.
Then the team gathered in the respective groups for agility drills. And 5 minutes later they're practicing technique. About 15 minutes into the practice while the skill players are doing 7 on 7's the DL and OL are scrimmaging with the emphasis on working on their assignments.
So about 25 minutes into the practice the 77 play scrimmage then begins.
And... huh, I'm really thinking...gees I hope the boys are stretched out and don't injure themselves... Am I missing something here were my true thoughts. Do the boys, now a days, stretch and do their calisthenics in the locker room before heading onto the practice field? Maybe, IDK. Let's pray they do.
...I mean in our day, some 30 years ago, before every practice, scrimmage and game we'd do real calisthenics--isometrics, ankle, wrists, shoulder and neck rolls And real agilities. Not perfunctory at all. For the coaches back then preached that being flexible, where the muscle groups are loose, deters injuries. This is easily understood.
And then I look at the Warriors and wonder. And I can see how lack of real calisthenics and stretching is conducive to injuries, and I'm hoping the players are doing it on their own time if that's what they're resigned to doing. To put mildly I was shocked at observing this last Saturday's practice at how rigidly looking some of the linemen look.
What I'm guessing you'll hear is that college football teams have time constraints and that they have to zip thru practices, like NFL teams do. What's at the forefront of these practices is teaching assignments and instruction and the players are relegated to doing the axillary things on their own. And to the player's benefit I hope they are.

Good morning everyone!
...another work day for me, will be back later...
April 21st, 2009 at 9:05 am
roysan16- i've heard that current research suggests large amounts of stretching prior to working out isn't all that good for you. Coaches now say to just get "warmed up" with rotator circles and light exercising/jogging. The key is to thoroughly stretch after workouts.
At least that's what i've heard... Aloha!

I believe that you will win the bet. Why don't we show up at the next gathering and I will pay you off?
I will bet that he can run a 4.7/40.
April 21st, 2009 at 9:11 am
Maybe it just means that the NFL doesn't pay for a player to get in shape and be ready. It pays for players that ARE ready at the start of their work day till the end. All that stretching, prepping and getting in shape are obligatory duties that each player needs to do on their own time. That would maximize the hands on time time that each player has to learn and practice their techniques and plays.
April 21st, 2009 at 9:14 am
al,
your funny. if from today on if I hear he runs a 4.7/40 I'll pledge a $100.
to the football team. that's a promise.
April 21st, 2009 at 9:24 am
psssst, it was ombudsman that made the bet. make sure you don't get the two confused.....
April 21st, 2009 at 9:30 am
Eh, roysan16
I already have an identity crisis going on, why you calling me "al"?
I believe that I am at least twenty years younger than he is.
Oh boy, now I really going to get it.
April 21st, 2009 at 9:40 am
ombudsman,
why?
intuitive thinking
the real "al" acts the part-ombudsmen, which is good- an arbitrator type of person
not going to fool me--in a way you mimic "al"
the only thing missing is "nuff said"
