"Power in Pink"

May 2nd, 2009
By Stephen Tsai

If you get a chance, check out the Rainbow Wahine softball team's Senior Day. The doubleheader, which begins at 2 p.m., will be shown on K5.
It is being billed as "Power in Pink," and the UH players will wear specially made pink uniform as a way to support breast-cancer survivors.
But, no, it does not appear there is an XXL-sized jersey for coach Bob Coolen.

* * *

Tank Hopkins, a candidate for a starting cornerback job, is unique, and not just because he no longer wants to be known by his given name of "Melvin." He wears a padded orange vest during workouts and to classes.

* * *

Last year's inspirational story — Joey Cadiz — is seeking a sequel.  Cadiz, a running back who is about 5 f eet 5, earned a spot on last year' s training-camp roster with relentless work during the offseason conditioning program.
But he missed the entire 2008 season after suffering a torn ACL.
He recovered successfully, and competed in the recently completed spring training.
But Cadiz, for now, is not on the 105-player roster for training camp.
The roster is a work in progress, and there might be some openings. Maybe Cadiz can break through again.

Here's to a fine class of seniors in Courtney Baughman, Clare Warwick, Julie Franklin, Richie-Ann Titcomb, Audrey Andrade, Stacy Yamada, Tanisha Milca, and Junior Malamaisaua Manuma for giving us 4 years of great Wahine Softball!!!

I hope you all have accomplished everything you wanted during your time on the softball field and here in Hawaii. Take with you the memories and the uniqueness that is Hawaii and know that this is your home and for the mainland-born Wahine, know that this is a second home to you all as well as you are "adopted daughters" of Hawaii.

Best of luck to you ladies in your future endeavors!

As with our past Warriors and Rainbow Wahine, you all have made a mar k in the on-going legacy that is UH athletics and no one can take that away from you.

May 2nd, 2009 by Stephen Tsai
If you get a chance, check out the Rainbow Wahine softball team's Senior Day. The doubleheader, which begins at 2 p.m.

Yes. Especially those that are planning on going to the baseball game or already have tickets tonight and want to get good parking.

-Arrive at 2pm. Should be a lot of parking available.
    -Watch two softball games.
    -Say "aloha" to the seniors.
-Walk across the "street" to Les Murakami at 6:30.

  61. koakane™:

cohana jj told me during your time fire was invented ;) bwhaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  62. brew808:

Mahalo for the 411 on DHS. Do you know if they've decided to change the name after canonization?

I heard koakane was #45 in his class of 40!

  63. Kazz:

    Koakane,

C'mon. I'll be at softball today!

I also bought my tickets for the baseball game a week ago. They are at will call.

Nah, seriously though, I don't watch a lot of PPV fights MMA or boxing and the few MMA ones I got dragged to I watched them at Red Lion University. They charged a 10.00 cover fee to get in for the PPV. That seems to be the standard at a lot of places.

As mentioned before, you can call The Shack in Mililani or Ige's 19th Puka in Aiea across from Buzz's Steakhouse. Out of the two I think The Shack in Mililani is more likely to have it.

  134. Garret (using Lori's computer):

David Veikune showed his intelligence today, as he was put on the spot in front of the coaches and players in a team meeting this morning. The defensive coaches bet on him to get the answer correct and he did.

Outside linebacker David Veikune, the Browns' second-round pick from the University of Hawaii, cost Mangini some money Saturday morning.

Mangini said he brought Veikune to the white board with the task of drawing up a full blitz.

''The defensive staff had the option to bet on him and I was the house,'' Mangini said. ''He nailed it. I'm always happy to pay those.''

So, I'll see the blog tomorrow...look forward to reading about how Hercules is doing today.

The Athenian restaurant in Pike's Market is good and nice view from the 2nd floor. The restaurant near the totem pole to the right of the market (assuming it is still there) is a sister restaurant to Ryan's at Ward Center = name excapes me.

    Artichokes for dinner tonight.

  154. Jason:

They said Hatton is not feeling well enough for an interview; he's walking off to his own room, he looks okay. I hope they take him to a hospital, though, just for precautions. That was an absolute shot that he took from Manny.

  155. wafan:

For music that is a bit different click on my name.

I have never heard of them but it would be cool to go to one of their performances!

  156. wafan:

    Hmmmmm, Try that again.

  157. wafan:

Mmmmmmm. Artichokes! How could something so odd looking taste so good.

  158. wafan:

So, why does the HA put that fool with the smirk on his face on the front page two straight days?

How about a photo of the SoftBows? Or of the Les? Even a close-up of poo would be a better photo.

  159. d1島:

My take on artichokes is that it is another excuse to eat BUTTER...along with potatoes, lobster, and ensemadas

  160. d1島:

    Almost time for BaseBows!

  161. d1島:

Hmmm....Torigoe in for Van Doornum who is resting a shoulder tonight

  162. d1島:

    RIP Jack Kemp.

  164. Stephen Tsai:

Great to see Pomai at the softball doubleheader.
He received leis from the players.

  165. Stephen Tsai:

This is why they shouldn't serve alcohol at UH softball games.
Koakane introduced Pomai to Stretch as "Brew."

  166. d1島:

    AWESOME!

  167. d1島:

    errrrr....164 was awesome.

    165 was....about par

  168. Jason:

Doesn't matter if you serve koakane alcohol or not; all the previous years did their damage!

Awesome aloha from the softball players. They never cease to amaze me. It really is one big ‘ohana there.

  169. 99club:

I'm sure Pomai was polite and didn't tell 'im that they'd met in New Orleans. :)

  170. Stephen Tsai:

I was more amazed that Stretch said he met Brew before. I didn't think anybody met Brew.

  171. d1島:

Stretch may have been speaking "generically" of brew

  172. brew808:

    Hey!!!

  173. Jason:

You mean brew808 isn't chawan_cut's alter ego that he created to make himself look cool?!?!?! ;-)

(I'm just kidding, of course. That's too brilliant of an idea for chawan_cut to have come up with.)

  174. wafan:

That was nice of the SoftBows.

    Hi Pomai!!!

  175. Committed Road Warrior:

I thought brew808 had mind-altering devices so that we forget what he looks like the minute we leave his presence.

  176. wafan:

Brew looks just like a regular guy except for that one weird eye that keeps looking around even while he is talking to you, and that really, really long hair growing out from his right eyebrow.

Or was that just a disguise?

  177. d1島:

    Jason,

Eh, no pick on chawan_cut when he not here.

...ahhh...nevah mind, we pick on him when he IS here anyway!

  178. d1島:

brew looks like the guy from Big Trouble in Little China?

  179. wafan:

Brew's eyes are like those of chameleon. He knows what is going on around him all the time.

  180. wafan:

Nevada (9-4) swept a DB from the fresnecks (4-10) while SAC (5-8) took one from SJSU (7-6).

    1. NEV 9-4
    2. NMS 9-7
    3. SJSU 7-6
    4. HAW 9-8
    5. LaT 9-9
    6. SAC 5-8
    7. FSU 4-10

  182. djmitcho:

Well, the Shock won again. Still undefeated. Hercules Satele started and played the whole game at guard. He did a good job the entire game. He didn't give up a sack, but had one false start penalty. I don't think the penalty was his fault though. The d-line guy should have been called for encroachment.

  183. Pomai:

I was so stroked by those girls all of them not just the seniors gave me a lei, had so many couldn't hardly see, but the best part is they gave me two shirts.

Mahalo to Koakane for introducing me to the coaches.

  184. Mrs. A-House:

    Pomai:

You are most deserving of all the attention and leis from the Wahine Softball team for if not for you they would not have received their Championship bracelets.

Wish you were there at the Stanley when the entire team came up to our section to say thank you!!!

  185. Garret (using Lori's computer):

    Pomai,

I'm so glad that the softball players were so great towards you! They showed their Aloha and I'm so happy you had that moment.

I found this article fascinating, and have no idea why some man in Louisiana was sending long letters and $500 per month to a woman that he never met, just because she sent him her transcript showing that she was doing well in school.

*Koakane* ~ Thanks for introducing the Wahine Softball Team to the man who spearheaded the bracelet project. Pomai told me he was going to be at the game today, and I was hoping this hook-up would happen. It sounds like the girls will always remember that small gesture for the rest of their lives.

  201. Kazz (blkberry_storm):

It was fitting that the seniors that were part of that 2007 championship team got to meet Pomai in person.

On a serious note, I hope Amanda Tauali'I is ok after that hard collision in the second game. I did see her come back on the field to join her team as part of the senior ceremony so looks like she is ok.

It just didn't look good when she was awkwardly laying face down on the ground and not moving for a while.

  202. tom mui:

POMAI: You deserved the accolades from the Wahines!

Thank you for making it possible for them to get their championship bracelets

  203. BG:

The SB Wahine were a class act to recognize Pomai. It takes class to recognize class. It tests the limits of believeability that someone on the east coast could organize and successfully execute the selection, acquisition, and presentation of those championship bracelets. I won't ever forget it!

  204. BG:

Hey Liz! If you're still around...

Just got done with some work I needed to do and jumped over to the Redskins message board since they have their mini camp going on this weekend.

I've come to the conclusion that CB will get a real shot in the pre-season. And, because of that, he will be #1 or #2 when the season starts. Now that CB is healthy, Zorn has to find out this year if CB is going to the QB that we think he is. From Zorn's point of view, if CB doesn't show his stuff, they can release him and end up not spending much money. If he shows well, they're going to have to give him lots more money for a new contract after next year. Or, they can sign him to a new contract and trade him if they think Campbell is going to be their #1. A good showing from CB will allow the Redskins to let Collins and his substantial contract go. Whatever the outcome, Zorn has to give CB a good shot to show his stuff. As they say...the rest will be history!

    and duffer, thanks!
wafan, lets just say it was a special day for tombo ahi.

and no, i never leave yet (to the dismay of some). i'll be gone (and back) soon enough!

  207. LizKauai [iMac] UNITE AND CONQUER!:

d1- 159- make that GARLIC butter..... mmmm...
These new artichokes from Costco are rounder and no need trim thorns!

Awesome for Pomai tonight! Too bad I BELIEVE was not able to be there for the kudos.

BG- the Skins sites are popping, that's for sure. I'm hoping Jason Campbell is solid this year and also hoping that if he is not, they let Colt let 'er rip. They have many more targets for an aerial game. And Zorn needs to show 'em what a West Coast Offense looks like.

    HAIL!

  208. LizKauai [iMac] UNITE AND CONQUER!:

Hi c_c... so what... Tombo on his honeymoon???? Just a guess...

i can't believe what happened to that dallas indoor practice facility. one person's back is broken but is diagnosed to fully recover. things could've been much much worse.

  211. Ralph:

congratulations to Tsai's Alma Mater Roosevelt HS, the girls winning the OIA softball championship tonight for their first ever OIA softball title beating Mililani 3-1

  212. Mei Ling:

Another fun day & night hanging with Tsaikos!

Glad Pomai could make it to the game today & meet the team.

    Night all!

  213. Ralph:

just saw the replay where Tau'alii got injured...fortunately the BSU player was taller as she ran with her head down and on the collision her eyebrow area contacted Amanda's jaw while she was looking skyward for the foul ball. Impact from her helmet would have caused serious damage to Amanda..

  214. LizKauai [iMac] UNITE AND CONQUER!:

Nitey nite and Sweet Warrior/Wahine Dreams!

  215. mctruck:

Well, back on again this morning....seems the storms kinda tappered-off for now. Neva scare me for a second...eh!!! what's this brown stuff in my pants???

Now to go outside to check out the grounds and my truck, etc. laters gang, thanks for all your well wishes last night.

  216. wafan:

    Good morning!

  217. wafan:

    mctruck . . .

Good to see you are still here!

    Uh, is that mud?

  218. Garret (using Lori's computer):

    BG,

I like your post #204 about Colt. The only thing that I would add is that Washington cannot sign Colt to a contract if they want to trade him because the cap rules would give them a huge salary cap hit if they traded him after signing him to a contract...they would have to accelerate the entire salary cap hit of the bonus when they traded him.

The salary cap really changes the dynamic of trades in the NFL. At least it doesn't make things as difficult as the NBA though...that salary cap really makes trading difficult.

  219. Garret (using Lori's computer):

Following up on Ferd's column today, this part of the article talks about how Colt's teammates believe in him and how he believes in himself.

Colt Brennan is a stud. OK, maybe not. But he has to be one of the most likeable players on the team. This kid is determined to remind everyone that he can play. He does not lack for confidence. And his teammates have confidence in him.

  220. wafan:

    Everyone still asleep in Hawai'i?

  221. wafan:

Too bad for the BaseBows. What is going on with their game?

    Bad time for a slump.

    Good morning Hawaii!

GARRET: thanks for #219 - nice to hear that Colt's teammates have confidence in him.
