Veikune prepares for OTAs

Former UH football player David Veikune leaves tomorrow for the Cleveland Browns' seven weeks of organized team activities (OTAs). Veikune, who ran sprints at UH this morning, won't return to Hawai‘i until July. It is at that time when most new contracts are finalized. The Browns will pay for Veikune's expenses during the "volunteer" training session. During rookie camp, Veikune roomed with Alex Mack, the Browns' first-round draft choice.

To get crispy bacon, place 4-5 strips in between 2 paper towels, then place between 4-5 pages of the advertiser and micro for 3 - 4 minutes. With a little trial and error (minutes nuked), you'll get crispy, fat, greaseless bacon.

very interesting that only one candidate has any head coaching experience. is this the tie breaker?
it is good that all candidates have hawaii ties. two have actually played for the manoa school.
several have recruited successfully on a regular basis.
i find that two candidates seem to have a shorter resume than others.
i thought there would be more high profile applicants for the position, what with the fraility of the men's vb sport, where else but the mecca of volleyball would the best opportunity exist?

Costco has pre-cooked bacon in the refrig section, think the brand is Hormel. Pre-cooked so a lot of the grease is gone, just pop into da microwave to nuke and it comes out nice & crispy, without the grease & hastle of cleaning up.

I just called Dianne Chang at UH and suggested that if they don't shake hands for the graduation commencement, maybe they should use the ol' Japanese technique of bowing instead. There's a bunch of information on the internet on proper bowing, etc., even some European countries use bowing as a jesture of recognition and honoring each other.
She said she would pass it on to the Chancelor, but she liked the idea.

I did not know that Midori7 uses dark glasses to drive at night. Will ask her about that. I do know that ST is very good at noticing her dark glasses as she drives past him or his house or while she is following him on Pali Hwy. She says ST drives to slow!!! Guess she speeds!
All my good training went down the drain. Not really as I told her and MasaBoy that they will forget what I taught them and they will eventually speed, etc. Heck, Mrs A-House is always on my case for speeding, following to close, cutting in and out, changing lanes to frequently, etc.

I thought about bows as an option, but I wonder what the pictures are going to look like. I know when I graduated from high school, there was a photographer who took a shot of each handshake, and each student was able to purchase a copy of that (I have a photo of that on the wall). There's going to be a photographer there on Saturday too, and I suppose that s/he was going to take shots of the handshake too. Not sure if a picture of two people bowing will look as good. Maybe hand over the diploma, turn to the camera and pose with a quick shaka, then walk off.
Well, whatever they do, I hope they tell us in advance.

Lots of smirks and head shaking when Coach Mike pronounced this week's 4-game series against Utah Valley will be set on "play to win" mode.
"What does that mean?"
Someone asked me, not waiting for a reply.
"We dont play to win"?

OK, this season ending series with the wolverines can be seen as a tactical tuneup for the four-day WAC Tournament that begins THURS and ends SUN.
Crucial in a six-team 4-day tournament is precisely the "play to win" mindset, especially the rotation and relief of pitchers. Each game, particularily the first two games, strategy-wise is viewed as a must win. The difference in winning in the winners bracket or coming up through the losers bracket is at least one full-game.
That said, pitchers who are struggling and may have otherwise been allowed to continue, may suddenly get hooked by Coach Mike. It depends on many factors, but saving your reserves wont be one.
Jayson Kramer, our #1 starter-in-rotation is a great pitcher to get it going.
Jayson is consistent with his control and command of off-speed stuff. If he is off, the entire State will know it.
He throws strikes, low n away, mixes his pitches masterfully, gets ahead on the count and induces ground balls....lots and lots of ground balls.
Last THURS against the fresnecks, Kramer uncharacteristically gave up several walks, 5 hard-hit balls and 5 runs in 1.1 innings (only 2 earned runs)--Coach Mike hooked him early.
He was playing to win and JK was off at the gate.
Perhaps, during the season, with not so much on the line, Kramer would have been given more time to straighten out.
Not in a 6-team double elimination tournament where a loss suddenly places you in the losers bracket and the prospect of playing 6 games in 4-days to win the championship.
Our hitting is on the rise, in particular, our #1, #2, #7, #8 and #9 spots.
Landon will be a huge loss and that places tremendous pressure on Kevin Fujii.
This is a golden opportunity for Kevin to show 24 karat or fools glitter.
Yet, our pitching remains suspect. Im being kind.
Non-existent has also been used.
We have youth on the diamond that has shown promise but lacked in consistency.
Coach Mike will have his work cut for him. We dont have any flame-throwers on the mound so his boyz will have to show maturity and mix it up. You can bet the other teams will be sitting on the fastball, if our pitchers dont get strikes with their off-speed pitches.
Exciting stuff ahead and best wishes to our bowboyz.

You know those small legs of ham that they hang and cure througout the countryside in Spain? Jamon Serrano? Cured for a year, studies are begining to show that this ham has a number of health benefits. I had one of those in Spain years ago. Strange move by the Seattle School District.
Last week in an effort to renegotiate a contract for next year that relects a cut of one day (and the pay that goes with it) for next school year because of huge budget cuts, they fired ALL of the district teachers and support staff. The district initially claimed it was to enable the negotiation of a new contract.
Funny guys.
After it hit the news, the district claimed it was an error and the letters were not meant to be sent.
Right.
Looks like the letter was rescinded. I wonder why they even thought of doing that. Was it because they figured they could always find teachers when other districts make their cuts? Or was it because they figured the teachers would just hang around waiting to be rehired.
Odd behavior and decision making.

Hi,
This is my first post to Warrior Beat, but I've been a voyeur since just after Coach Mack's hiring. [Prefer the term voyeur to lurker.] I enjoy reading it immensely (esp. with Tsai's inside info on UH sports), but stopped reading the user entries to the blog for a while after a couple of spats resulted in bad feelings. Have started reading it again for several months now (although I missed the spat that resulted in Gigi leaving). I've even met up with some SoCal Tsaikos for a couple of gatherings recently. I was able to meet JD and KindaShy and Colt's parents during one of the gatherings. [I can't begin to tell you how glad I am that JD rather than HF is UH's AD.]
As with most of you, I have a lot of opinions about UH athletics. Hopefully, I'll present a slightly different perspective for the blog discussions (or civil arguments).

To Jim Donovan and the men's volleyball coach selection committee:
It would be a very good idea to thoroughly vet both your primary selection and a runner-up. Why? Shoji, who never used to mention retirement, has started mentioning it in the last few years. If the UH wahine volleyball coach position opens up (arguably a more prestigious job than the men's vball position), the current selection for men's coach would likely be a front runner due to volleyball expertise and desire to coach on the islands. If the men's coach then wins the wahine volleyball position, the runner-up could be selected (in a timely manner) to replace the primary selection without another long-drawn out process that hinders recruiting. Or, at the very least, a lead candidate will be evident (and only new candidates would have to be considered against the lead candidate).

Great to see you on the blog! I hope that I wasn't one of the people who messed up your name...I've had my name spelled wrong so many times that I shouldn't mess up other people's name!
One thing I should point out is that l_oku has a *much* longer drive than me from his workplace to the Calf Call locations, so it was a big effort for him to make it to the JD Calf Call and the last one that we had. It would be great to have him sitting with us in Vegas, and hopefully we can get together for a Cattle Call during the SJSU game weekend.

Article about how Central Florida's coach says that an early signing period would be a good way for football programs to save money, something even more important now when budgets are so tight. BCS schools like Texas also support an early signing period...I really hope this happens soon.

The family members flying in from HNL won't be in town until tomorrow, so we'll all be attending the much smaller convocation ceremony for my specific College that will be held on Saturday afternoon.
The 71,000+ who schlepped it out to attend tonight's commencement ceremony are the brave ones. Show up 4 hours early, endure not only airport-style security but also the 100 degree heat that prevailed the entire time as well as all the traffic restrictions (road closures galore, light rail system NOT serving the two ASU-designated stops for security reasons necessitating one to have to get off and hoof it the last mile to the stadium, etc.).
Unfortunately I didn't have any tickets for the commencement ceremony (ran out by the time I put my request in
), so I was relegated to watching it on local TV with a couple friends over some pizza.

Yep. The local paper reported ~100 cases of heat-related illness, so glad I was indoors watching it. The grindz was a typical $5 large pepperoni pizza from Little Caesar's, though, so not exactly the best-tasting stuff, however Little Caesar's is like a third staple for me behind saimin and freebies.

Hi Ralph! Yeah- got home, chilled out, cooked up some veggies that my son got from his friend's garden- eggplant, green beans and green onions. Stir-fried with Thai green curry paste and coconut milk. Tasted kinda bland so I garnished my plate with calamata olives and some Italian salami.
Oh yeah! Now get flavah!

You must have been busy around 5:00pm or so Hawai'i time. The ASU commencement speech was plastered over most of the national cable news networks.
Anywho, the speech was a good one, very inspiring. The President was rather gracious and humorous w/r/t the whole not-getting-an-honorary-degree controversy all the while talking about the rough economy and warning graduates about the dangers of greed and irresponsibility.
A lot of the speech overall was inspirational oratory fitting for today's turbulent times. He certainly didn't make any policy pronouncements and certainly didn't go into what many here consider the third-rail of Arizona politics (immigration policy).
All in all, it was very good. Didn't go into politics very much, if at all, which was very nice to see.

Curious-
Is it politically incorrect to deny someone access into this weekend's commencement if they show any signs of being infected of the virus? Or at least asked to be tested? Given the paranoia, anyone showing up to the commencement coughing with runny nose would be foolish to demand to be a part of it. The masses won't have any of it.
If UH is truly worried about possible transmissions of the Swine Flu, shouldn't everyone at the arena be wearing a mask also? Big deal nobody shakes hands. A good steady cough or sneeze by an infected professor or student on stage cancels all the hoopla over non physical contact.
Besides, hand wipes or soap dispensers at the foot of the stairs that graduates use before going on stage should be sufficient to kill any remnants of the H1N1 influenza virus, eh?
Ohhh wait... UH get soap?

Best wishes to the five-bowboyz seniors.
None are especially blessed with star-gaze assests but all are blessed with the character to improve daily; have set an example of unselfish-team play; and demonstrated a 'can do' attitude....every one of them contributed to our success, led their team by example and established a remarkable mantra for this 2009 team to follow---team fellowship and belief in each other.
Without a doubt this is my favorite Mike Trapasso team--they believe in themselves collectively, constantly pick themselves up to rebound while seeking to improve and have achieved merit beyond expectation....the attendance figures bears out my testimony.
Jayson and Landon have been steadfast all year as our number one battery and Ryan and Jared showed grit in bounce. Both these seniors are on a remarkable bounce curve and their timing couldnt have come at a better situation in need.
Also, Morford has been an anchor in the infield, making our infield one of the best at turning-two.
Shane is always ready to back his team or contribute when called, never complains and is an academic role-model.
Best wishes in the WAC-T and no matters--big Aloha and Mahalo for an exciting season--you boyz made it happen!
