Center John Estes has been named to the CBSSports.com 2009 Preseason All-America second team:

* * * * *
In UH time, today is Tuesday, which means it appears Lametrius Davis will be the starting left cornerback for Friday's opener against Central Arkansas.
Tank Hopkins was held out of another practice, and Lewis Walker, who has played well recently, also did not practice.
Davis gives the Warriors a physical bump-and-run corner they've lacked the past few years. At Butte College last season, Davis played mostly man-to-man coverage in a bear scheme.

Good afternoon everyone!
Congrats to John Estes!
August 31st, 2009 at 12:23 pm
L. Davis is a physical bump-and-run CB, too bad the U of H only play zone.
August 31st, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Hi SAWARRIOR -- long time no see! You going to the UH-UNLV from Texas? Are you still in San Antonio?
August 31st, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Congratulations to John Estes! I think that was actually posted a couple in the blog a couple of days ago, but most people probably missed it so it is good that ST highlighted Estes' honor.
August 31st, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Bad news about Tank Hopkins and Lewis Walker. I'm glad that Central Arkansas will try to rely on their running game, so CB depth might not be as big of a factor. Hopefully all the CBs will be healthy in time for the road trip.

Regarding Colt:
Zorn has 2 to 3years to show what he can do in making Washington a winner. Thus he needs to go with Campbell as the starter due to he being the highest paid quarterback on the team which the upper brass had brought in.
Don't question the upper brass. Only way Colt gets to play if Campbell goes down and Collin doesn't perform. Nothing to lose by palying Colt in that situation.
As mentioned by others more than likely Colt will remain on the team and Chase will be on the practice squad. There is a good probability that Colt maybe traded if Washington can get something worthwhile on a trade and feels Chase is a competent 3rd quarterback.
August 31st, 2009 at 12:40 pm
soooo, the tuesday no practice, no play rule is still in effect?

Not an Expert: #20
Don't forget that happened in Pittsburgh in 2004, Ben Roethlisberger was the #3 QB that year, the back up Batch got hurt at the end of preseason, and Tommy Maddox started the first and second game but got hurt in the 3rd QT of that game, Ben came in and replaced him and the rest is history. Now not wishing and harm to the redskins QB's but that could happen with Colt.

Howzit Tsaiko Nation! 4+ Days and counting!!
) They just need to tighten up on the opponents' dink shots, and keep their serve returns a little further off the net, and this should be a (NCAA) banner year! One of my few regrets about having emigrated from O'ahu is that I can't attend the games (FB, VB, BB & Baseball) as I once did. Mahalo to K5 for helping fill the void.
Gotta give Mr. Shoji and his warrior wahine a lot of credit for a job well done this weekend! (The AVCA was so impressed they list them at 4-0 on the season! I guess the win over UCLA counted as 2!
Friday's almost here! GO WARRIORS!!
August 31st, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Boy oh boy, I see all the "lofty" score predictions for the UH game and the more I feel uneasy for UCA is a team to be reckoned with.
I truly hope that I am wrong and can enjoy the game from the South End zone come Friday.

post # 25 - unusual name and reminds me of the movie Goldfinger!!
August 31st, 2009 at 1:16 pm
congrats to Coach Shoji and wahine...AWESOME JOB.
congrats to Estes for the preseason honor, just puts a big target on your back from the get-go....just got to live up to the hype....show them you deserve it and then some
GO WARRIORS, we'll be cheering from Laramie WY for a big victory!
GO WARRIORS
GO WILDCATS (X2) for d1 ohana too

Nice recognition for J. Estes.
Good thing L. Davis is familiar with bear schemes(?). That could be quite timely.
August 31st, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Hey djmitcho, I think you're playing FFTBL in another league with a friend of mine if I read his facebook wall correctly. You must lay the smackdown and make him cry like a girlie man in my absence. Do it for the Commish!
August 31st, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Bulla,
Enjoy the trip to Laramie! You may be one of the few who do.
But seriously, hoping the purple-clad Wildcats have a successful run to the FCS championship. High expectations are great, but it's a long road. I know you are planning to enjoy the ride!
GO WILDCATS x 2!!!
(#2's Wildcats are still preparing for the campaign this weekend.)
August 31st, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Dang! Miss a day and it's a long journey to getting caught up to the blog!
Bulla, you and Lyne will have to tell us later what it's like to watch a fb game at 10,000 ft altitude! Lordy! Best wishes to the Beast for a great game effort and the same goes for the Hawaii contingent there.
August 31st, 2009 at 1:35 pm
I love reading everyone's take on the Wahine Volleyball team, especially Kazz's. All them were great.
To: Estes shoot for first team. Provide the leadership in making the players performing around you better and it'll make you a better player. And likely having the national media and coaches taking greater notice of your play.
I'm a SF 49er fan again, especially seeing how they're 3-0 in this preseason. Bandwagon jumper your thinking, your right.
Also enjoyed reading witneys take on Wie. That was great. I did watch MW hovering over a 3 foot putt with such a wide stance, and seeming to be uncomfortable with her putting stance that she missed the easy putt. What someone wrote saying watch out when her putting comes around is true.

mahalo to everyone,
going to laramie is as close as i get to the mile die club, i mean the mile high club....ooops, might've died trying haha.
hype is just that.....that's what sells papers / blogs i guess. it still comes down to strapping up, manning up, and shutting up.....easy after that.....

August 31st, 2009 at 1:50 pm
It will be GREAT to see Ilaoa again and hear what he has to say on the WB show.
August 31st, 2009 at 2:15 pm
Live broadcast to Arkansas?
Make sure you smile nice for the camera.....
Q: What do you get when you have 32 Arkansasians in the same room?
A: A full set of teeth.
August 31st, 2009 at 2:20 pm
But really, I think there will be good viewership for the game. What else could they be doing?
The elderly gent said, "Sure, son."
His wife, who was hard of hearing leaned over to her husband and questioned, "What did he saaaay?"
The old man replied, "He says he's gonna fill up the car with gas!"
She leans back and nods approvingly. When the attendant comes to the window again he asks, "Can I wash that windshield for you?"
The old man replies, "Certainly, I'd like that."
The old woman again leans over to her husband and asks, "What did he saaaay?"
The old man gets close to her ear and explains that the attendant is going to wash the windshield. She leans back in approval.
When the attendant finishes the windshield, he comes around to the old man and says, "I see by your license plate that you are from Arkansas. I was in Arkansas in the military....worst sex I ever had was in Arkansas!"
The old woman leans over again asking, "What did he saaaay?"
Her husband turns to her and says, "He thinks he knows ya!!!"

You might know you're from Arkansas if....................
Your wife's job requires her to wear an orange vest.
Bikers back down from your momma.
You were shooting pool when your kids were born.
Your favorite Christmas present was a painting on black velvet.
You think that Dom Perignon is a mafia leader.
Your school fight song was "Dueling Banjos".
You think a chain saw is a musical instrument.
You've ever stolen clothes from a scarecrow.
You think that beef jerky and Moon Pies are two of the major food groups.
August 31st, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Bulla,
Some of them may be rushing around to get to a TV which means someone's bound to get pulled over....
The Arkansas state trooper pulls over a pickup truck on I-40. He says to the driver, "Got any ID?"
The driver says, "Bout what?"
August 31st, 2009 at 2:37 pm
They may need to pull together to support the Governor there if he's gonna watch the game....
Q: Did you hear that the governor's mansion in Little Rock, Arkansas burned down?
A: Yep. Pert' near took out the whole trailer park.
August 31st, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Of course, Tyson Chicken is big there so it wouldn't be unusual to see....
Two Arkansasians are walking down different ends of a street toward each other, and one is carrying a sack. When they meet, one says, "Hey Tommy Ray, what'cha got in th' bag?"
"Jus' some chickens."
"If I guesses how many they are, can I have one?"
"Shoot, ya guesses right and I'll give you both of them."
August 31st, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Health Care is a hot topic in Arkansas, too.
To help the discussion they've released a list of medical terms....
Artery....The study of painting
Bacteria....The back door of a cafeteria
Barium....What a doctor says when a patient dies
Bowel....A letter like A, E, I, O and U
Caesarean Section....A neighborhood in Rome
CAT Scan....Something for Kitty
Cauterize....Make eye contact with her
Colic....A sheep dog
Dilate...To live a long life
(cont'd. later)

#19, mi amigo---ellis island links....lol.
kudo's to Kunani, Aneli n Stephanie--proof that hard work in the off-season pays-off!
Look, Mac's spin stops FRI....who cares who is the #2-QB, what can the #1 do?
And, arent we tired of Ron Lee's praise of his wide-receivers?
I just want to know if they all learned to run simple-routes: simple-QBs can see and throw simple-passes.
Greg Sallas and Kealoha Pilares are the only two with experience. Of the other 7 that represent the "best ever assembled", 5 have yet to make a D1A reception.
Bottomline, the buck stops against the Central Arkansas Bears and the plank gets shorter over the three successive road games. By the end of 8 weeks, Phil Steele maybe murmuring, "I told you so" or humbly accepting al's CC at Richie's Drive Inn to offer his mea culpas.
At any rate, ACA +60 (After Central Arkaksas), it doesnt get easier, #2 QB and great widereceivers notwithstanding.
August 31st, 2009 at 3:41 pm
#58, sorry, misp., Kanani=Kunani
August 31st, 2009 at 3:41 pm

It sounds like you haven't been to watch the Warriors at practice. You would know that the receivers are doing great. You should go to practice & watch them.
And the WAC VB player of the week is Kanani Danielson.

Oakland's coach criticized Samson's ability to make their protection calls. I question Oakland's coaching, since Samson was never criticized about that at Miami or UH before.
August 31st, 2009 at 4:44 pm
Garret, most of us think that when you are a head coach, Tom Cable, most will believe him, but if you look further, he could be a dud. He was head coach at Idaho (yes, of th WAC) and never had a winning season and as a result got fired, was with Mora at Atlanta and got released along with Mora, came to Oakland and got the hc because Al Davis fired Kiffen. His record at Oakland is 5-11. He was a lineman, so I give him credit for that and relatively young as a hc. He appears to have problems getting the raiders into a winning mode and appears to be a whiner and blames others for the team problems.
August 31st, 2009 at 5:09 pm
garret....here's a guy that we recruited early and then he verballed to nebraska. now he says he is taking back the verbal and has gone back shopping.
he's a guy the staff would like.

anterrio sloan doesnt seem to have interest in hawaii though.
here s the article....
Anterrio Sloan changing his mind on his pledge to Nebraska isn’t a shock. He’s been looking around, but has maintained that he was still a commit to the Huskers, despite never actually visiting the campus.
Now he’s officially opening his recruiting back up, and as to the reason, Sloan said it was simple. “I haven’t talked to a coach there for about two months. They don’t call. They don’t write- nothing,” he said. “So, I just thought I would just decommit and just kind of take recruiting as it comes and get ready for my season.”
The logical assumption as to why Nebraska may have stopped communication was that they heard about him exploring his options and decided to look elsewhere. Sloan doesn’t think that’s the reason. “I know they got busy over the Summer, which I did, too. So, I know why they didn’t keep in contact then,” he said. “But I haven’t heard from them at all since, and I got all these other schools recruiting me pretty hard.”
The schools which top the list right now in terms of contact are Auburn, Mississippi State and Kentucky, all three teams he’s looking at as potential official visits. But he said this change of heart has caused him to change up how he’s approaching recruiting. “I’m just going to concentrate on my season and we’ll see how the recruiting goes. I’m not in any rush to do anything,” he said.
As for Nebraska, it would seem they are now on the outside looking in. But Sloan said the Big Red are still part of the mix. In fact, he said all they might have to do is stay in contact with him and he might turn that pledge right back around. “If they open up communication like they used to, I might just commit back to them. But I haven’t heard a thing from them in a long time,” he said. “I know why I committed there. It’s not like that’s changed. But if I don’t hear from them, I don’t know what’s going on.”
With Sloan’s change of heart, the Huskers are now back five commits. The Huskers had a pledge from Missouri prep receiver Keeston Terry earlier
August 31st, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Tom Cable has more to worry about than what Sampson is saying on the line. He will be lucky if he doesn't get a major suspension and avoids a felony assault trial.
August 31st, 2009 at 5:55 pm
I only attended one practice and one walkthrough this fall camp, so I can't speak for the guys right now. But I know last year, when Ron Lee was at the Nā Koa luncheon, he showed us film of the receivers and how the receivers were often sloppy in running their routes. I learned a lot listening to Ron that day.
When you spread out across the field like the R&S does, it's supposedly easier to find open holes in the defense, or to beat your man in space when defended one-on-one. But the efficiency of that route running can make the difference between a ten-yard gain and a sixty-yard touchdown pass. It's about how you make the cuts, the positioning of your feet and the way you lean through them, knowing what kind of cut is right for that route and that passing concept.
This is just my thinking—I don't know if the coaches would agree or disagree with this—but I figure when June Jones was around, he was so good at seeing the field and telling the receivers what to run that Ron could emphasize the little things, and that made our receivers that much more dangerous. Now with Ron as OC, he doesn't have the time to do that. Throw in the fact that the routes are more complicated with Ron's R&S, I figure that led Ron, Stutz, and Rolo to spend more time going over reads than route running.

Oh yeah, before I go, I thought this was a nice article on backup QBs in the NFL:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/preview09/news/story?id=4433306
No mention of Colt, but I couldn't help but think of him while reading this.
August 31st, 2009 at 6:18 pm
This article gives a lot of reasons why Hartline will be picked to start at WR for Miami instead of Bess or Camarillo. It is interesting that Bess' contract situation (contract up after this season) gives Miami and incentive to start Hartline instead of him.
August 31st, 2009 at 6:20 pm
letsgowarriors,
Thank you for that article. I won't worry about the possibility of Sloan being interested in UH...given the distance between his home and Hawaii and all the BCS schools going after him in his region of the country, I'm guessing the coaches aren't going to waste their limited and valuable time on recruiting him.

Ok, we have some athleticism and speed on D, but the crunch comes down to our DTs and its depth at this position to stop the run. Talent and experience drop after #3 in the rotation. Our DEs are tweeners and everyone else is inexperienced throughout the remainder of the D-lineup... We have seen this before.
Can we stop the run?

Glad to hear you are enjoying the classroom, too! To me, that is the best part -- watching the "ah-ha!" moments everyday.

There are "Aha!" moments?
And yeah, I can't believe what they are pushing. I was talking to a friend, he's two years my senior and also an alumnus. He got his degree in physics, and just finished up his M.Ed. If physics were my expertise, I'd love to go and teach that instead, less headaches. Then again, he did say he would crush me physically, and then show himself superior in knowledge of physics. On both accounts, I must defer.

Mr. A-House . . .
I leave this Saturday but will not be able to make the Friday Festivities. Going to try though, but it looks bleak.
Anyhow, I checked with the buffet at the casino. They close at 11pm -- more than enough time to get up there and have a feast and play some games!
We have some time to figure out where to meet and such. I believe rides to and from will be easy to figure out.

It would be GREAT for the WAC, and for Coach Tomey especially, if SJSU could upset USC in their season opener. On paper SJSU should have no chance. However, USC is starting a true freshman QB and Coach Tomey will do everything he can to confuse and rattle him.

Not only is Central Arkansas' top WR out for the season, their plans to use a power rushing offense took a hit with their All-Conference FB missing the UH game.
August 31st, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Central Arkansas' projected starting QB will make the trip to Hawaii, but he hasn't been able to practice much of their Fall camp.
August 31st, 2009 at 7:14 pm
UCA lost both coordinators and their coach is worried about their coordination. They were able to use the UH trip to recruit, so they already got some benefit from playing UH.
August 31st, 2009 at 7:16 pm
Travel info for UCA. UH is getting a great financial deal on this game...SEC schools pay $1 million for a D-IAA team to visit their home stadiums.
Interesting that UCA gets an entire day free in Hawaii after the game, plus they go to Pearl Harbor the day before the game.
August 31st, 2009 at 7:18 pm
A number of true freshmen will play against UH. D-IAA teams have scholarship limitations so their depth isn't as great as D-IA teams and they have to play freshmen more...but they have talent in their starting units and can be dangerous if taken lightly.

Some notes:
1) With Jake Ingram now the long snapper for sure, I wonder if he's telling Belichick to go get Colt Brennan if he can. The Patriots back ups right now are Brian Hoyer, a rookie from Michigan St. and Andrew Walter, formerly from Arizona St. and Oakland Raiders who is not the answer. The Patriots for sure are waiting for the roster cuts to see if they can get another QB or are working on a deal to get somebody after they released Kevin O'Connell. I don't really care for the Redskins so I hope Brennan gets a chance some place else. Denver might be a good place too.
2) My heart sank when Kanani Danielson went down last night. I thought it was real bad, maybe a broken ankle. If we lost her, it's over. We cannot win a national championship w/out her. Dave Shoji will tell anybody that winning the WAC is nice, but it's all about winning the big one. It's been a long time, Dave. Can the Wahine do it this year? While it's a good start over the weekend, they have to get better. There needs to be more kills right in the middle of the court. That will open up the outside more and be more effective percentage wise. Hewitt seems to be promising. I hope she progressively get better and become more of a force.
3) Higgins and Manley - I saw the game last Saturday. I thought Higgins outplayed Manley. Are the Warriors looking at Higgins? I thought Higgins was more mobile. Are the Warriors taking a look at Vonn Feao?
He's the guy w/ the menacing look as a relief pitcher who closed out the game for the Ewa Beach Little Leaguers to win the Little League World Series. At first, I thought for sure he would end up as a linebacker but it looks like he's a running back or fullback.

I'm guessing all current rides are grandfathered with the deal. Disney would like for Universal not to have those rides, but they cannot prevent them from keeping those rides going.

Long time is right. Twice I caught myself looking up at the last national championship banner during Hawaii Pono i.
This past weekend was great and you could see Brittany Hewitt improve from Friday through Sunday. As the competition got better so did she.
One thing I have been pondering all day was how Amber Kaufman kind of went to the ground against Western Michigan on Friday. I was sitting across the Wahine bench and she was kind of slumped over on and off for about a minute. It was subtle enough that it was hard to really notice. She never really got her first kill against UCLA until the 2nd set, but then again the Bruins really did their homework on her "swing" killshot.
I think Kaufman will be targeted going forward and even into WAC play. Of course the simple fact of the matter is that all WAC teams, sans NMSU, can scout her all they want, but the better athlete will win 9.5 out of 10 times so it will be no problem for Kaufman.
Going back to what it would mean to lose Kanani Danielson, it sure as hell would be the nail in the coffin to lose Amber Kaufman (KNOCKS ON WOOD).
Final thing... Can't remember how often the rotation worked out, but Stephanie Ferrell looked REAL good at the ROH spot last night in the second set, but again I wonder who can we go to if Kanani is out for whatever reason. As I mentioned last night, Coach Shoji is eventually going to have to give Corrine Cascioppo more time, most likely when conference play starts and the same goes for Alexis Forsythe. Over the weekend you can see these two can play at the D1 level, but they just need to get some "ground" underneath them.
Confidence and opportunity has done wonders for Brittany Hewitt thus far and with many Wahine Volleyball fans clamouring for that much-needed height on the team, the next few season will be exciting... if everything pans out and falls together.

So... Ferd picks 8-5. That's as fair as one can get I guess. It seemed to generate enough attention to garner some "comments" online off the HA website and Im sure those kiddies got their rocks off by flaming each other to death by now.
Personally, in the beginning I had felt a repeat regular season record of 7-6 would be repeated with difficulties coming from defensive struggles in the secondary being the cause and that this time the offense would be handling the bulk of the stress.
However, as fall camp came and from the 5 practices I was able to see over the entire month of August, it's apparent that the tides of "change" in what a typical Hawaii football team "looks" like or what kind of "style" they'll have on a "national" basis.
JJ had this program lighting up the evening Halawa sky, but Coach Mack seems determined to have this team develop their "speed" on defense, especially in the front seven.
As we "limped" out of the Hawaii Bowl, a friend asked me what I thought of the young defense for 2009 and the first thing that I said was that, "well, Coach Mack is a defensive guy so I'm not too worried" and that's pretty much the equivalent of "well Coach Jones is an offensive guy so I'm not worried"... but then again I wasn't an SMU fan and we saw what they did last season despite JJ's claims that he had "better" athletes at SMU in his first season in Dallas than he had at Hawaii in 1999...
(but I digress)
So from the spring to the fall, I think the defense will for sure surprise some people for the better. I haven't really noticed Haku or Geordon in the last few practices I attended and for some reason I kept missing out on noticing or watching Zach Masch, was busy watching Meatoga and Savaiigaea run over olinemen I guess ...
The secondary's "tackling" looks more like "tackling" now as opposed to those arm tackles of yesterday and looks like there is more discipline in knowing when to go for a KATOOSH as opposed to always being on a head-hunting expedition and then getting burned with one quick juke by the opposing WRs.
I'm trying not to think about what's going to do well or not so well as quite honestly, it's hard to tell. Everyone has different opinions on which way this season will go and all the accusations of "haters" or "kool-aiders" is quite tiresome and people from both sides that keep arguing can do so till the end of time.
In the end, all the positivity or all the negativity will not have a direct impact on the year so there is NO point in convincing opposing views that your opinion is correct, right, or even educated.
The truth is, our views are our own and regardless of either we tell ourselves "things will be ok" or "this season will be bad", there is only one person that will care what you think and that is ourselves.
Me personally, to some I'm a "kool-aider" and regardless of how anyone may think of that or this post, they can l**k my a** about it because we're going 9 and F'N 4 MOTHER***KERS!!!

Slugger ~ You've been to a lot more of the fb practices then most of us guys. Your observance of the team has really been impressive! The women's clinic helped you to understand a little bit more how it feels from a player's perspective on the field.
I know you have your opinion of the receiver's catching abilities as on some occasions you and I watched them haul in some tough passes. An important part of those catches was their ability to hold on to the ball even when they were smacked down real hard by the db's!
Congratulations on upgrading your knowledge of the game. It's all good because you know what you saw out there certainly was not sugar coated. Some have the bumps and bruises to prove it!
See you at the t-gate!

Nice... the $159 per person 4 nighter on September 21 caught my eye. Anyone in the LAS-SDO area with 5 days off should try it... specially after the Las Vegas game.
Peaches and I will be sailing on the Norwegian Sun out of San Francisco on Sunday 9/20 (I hope) immediately after scrambling out of Vegas a few hours after the game...

Taking my mom to the airport (for Vegas) last night made it official... Peaches and I will miss the season opener this Friday. Good news is that Long Time UH Fan is going and will be using my tickets.
My brother in CA bought mom tickets to Vegas to stay with them at the Venetian. How did bargain basement brother swing that? Of course , mom's return flight ETA is 9:05 PM Friday. Peaches works till 5:30 PM anyway and mom has to wait 5 hours at LAS before her flight home, so we're going to pick her up and settle her in for the night. We'll be watching the game at Genji's until mom lands. Hope the game is well decided in our favor by then...

NYUH,
You do not need to click blindly--if you put your mouse over my name it will show you the URL it is pointing to before you click on anything.
I do things this way for two reasons:
1. It was my impression (which I admit could be wrong) that the Advertiser people wanted URLs to be put in that field.
2. Sometimes the articles I find have *long* URLs. I'd rather not use a tiny URL because that really does make for a blind click, so doing things this way seemed best. It helps me to not have to worry about whether or not the URL is too long or not...less thinking saves me time and is easier when I find a bunch of stuff.
