Wideout Jovonte Taylor did not practice today because of a staph infection in his right arm. It was the third such infection for a Warrior in recent weeks.
Safety Aulolo Tonga suffered a staph infection on his right elbow from a cut suffered at Idaho. Safety Spencer Smith believes he suffered his infection in the Boise State game at Aloha Stadium. Smith aggravated the condition last week Friday, and spent that night in the hospital. He was cleared to play two hours before the past Saturday's game against Utah State.
It is believed Taylor suffered his infection in the Utah State game.

I have a solution.
If a player gets cut at the Aloha Stadium turf, let's send that punk of an usher that patrols the North end zone telling people to sit down during touchdowns.

Not really I think although the bathrooms on the first floor of the athletic complex are pretty NASTY, well at least for the men. It seems more to be the case of more and more players getting cut up on the worn-down turf.
Watching the TV replay you could see more and more players with those old schoolish turf tape things on their elbows.

Me and my buddies call him "Captain Hardcore". This punk is about 5'11" 150-160 lbs anywhere between 50-55 years old. Local guy. Short black hair... yadda yadda yadda.
First, there are a bunch of fans in my section in the north endzone that do push ups along with ROTC guys after TDs. So Captain Hardcore comes down to tell them to stop. So they do. Next TD, they improvise and do push ups on their seats (if you can imagine that), so he comes over and looks confused because now he really can't do anything. HOWEVER!!! Third time after the 3rd TD of the game, he decides to check their tickets to make sure they are in the right seats.
Sure enough those guys (ages ranging from early 30's to mid 40's) do sit in those seats and I've seen them there for the past three seasons.
He walks back up the stairs to them laughing at him. One day he'll get his and I hope to be there to see it!
No worries, as long as you don't sit in orange UU-TT north end zone, no one has to worry about CAPTAIN HARDCORE!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm gonna bring a few beach balls on Saturday and let's see how agile Captain Hardcore really is!!!!!!!!

Aloha Stadium also needs the rest of the roof fixed. It looks really bad, especially in the day time, with 30% of the roof new and 70% still looking like it did in 1975.

Hopefully the training staff follows up with those who are given antibiotics to ensure they complete the full course; IIRC that's the main reason for mutations and drug resistance.

Howzit Everybody,
Eh Kazz, Saturday I think we had Captain Hardcores dad or something patroling our section because braddah came up to our section and started yelling at young kids who where having fun throwing confetti during touchdowns.
The situation got ugly when that usher came up to one of our church friends grandson and started reading him his rights right in front of his grandparents. The usher was yelling at the boy and was pointing his finger in the kids face. The usher was the old guy maybe about 60-70's, but when my uncle saw this he taped the usher on his shoulder to find out why he yelling at his grandchild.
But long story short. My uncle gave it to the usher and so did we because he just started coming up to our section and harrasing the young kids and there parents. I really think that these ushers are barking up the wrong tree. It got so bad that I told my two year old son to throw paper at the usher to see if he would come and yell at my son because if he did I would probably not be on the blog today and maybe for a long time to come.
But I see where your coming from Kazz. Stadium Authority gotta make sure that there ushers are enforcing the rules but at the same time gotta make sure that they are not going after people that are just trying to have fun and celebrate our Warriors.

I find the UH CO and Admissions bureaucrats more irritating than a stadium usher....they are all part of the same smell of brain dead servants who are part of a system that lives on deadbeat mangement style and is painted distinctly black or white.
Anyone who has attended UH knows who works behind the counters.
Ditto for our legislature.

When we were young, walking around with dried scrapes and cuts made us look tough (or so we thought). Being not-so-tough, I put mercurochrome.
Nowadays, seek immediate treatment. Lots of new strains and staph has always been nasty.

I've been in the UH locker room many times. It's not pretty.
And, I've said several times, UH actually has the option of using TWO locker rooms. That's what the visitors do. Put offense in one, defense in the other. More room. Fewer people using the same showers.
But UH crams everybody into one locker room and keeps the second one empty. Sometimes the linemen are sitting cheek to cheek.

Yesterday after practice, Coach Lumpkin came out of the locker room door and was (y)/telling the guys to pick up their stuff off the floor and the benches. Sounds like keeds... but that could contribute to spreading staph.

NO DOUBT. Big time punk. But the sad thing is we where winning and people where just tying to enjoy the win. This was the most we scored all season. People needed to let there fustrations out. People needed to get up and just yell in happiness. The kids needed to make rubbish. Kind of hard keeping your children relaxed when we not scoring so might as well let throw paper when we are scoring. Makes it a whole lot more fun when the team is scoring and the keiki is making a mess.

The staff will be more aware of the staph issue. The hope is that the staph will not return as it looks bad on the staff too. The staff would not appreciate more staph issues as it does not shine a good light on the way things are handled by the staff.

I hope that UH runs the ball a lot against NMSU and has the same success as in the Utah State game. That would go a long way towards impressing Joshua Quezada...UH is in a tough recruiting battle for him.

Quezada obviously has taken care of things in the classroom because he's going to graduate early and go through Spring Practice for whatever college he chooses. Talented high school recruits like Quezada are a great way to build a solid, sustainable foundation for a team.

I give up battling with the blog software...it shouldn't be this hard to comment on the blog! I have had to close browser tabs and reload the blog 3 or 4 times today after making a comment. I'll try tonight to see if the blog software/server is working better.
It is only this blog that I'm having trouble with, so something between the blog software and my laptop just doesn't get along. I do not think that the above posts on the NMSU game had anything objectionable in them, so I do not understand why the blog would make it so hard for me to post them.

personal hygiene will minimize or eliminate staph infection. Take a shower after each practice and game, always walk around with footwear, slippers in the locker room and shower area, never bare feet. Treat all cuts no matter how small or deep but washing the area, if available, swab with betadiene solution, it is the brown solution doctors and nurses used to scrub down with and also cleanse your arm with when you are donating blood.

am not a dr, but know enough about sanitizing closed areas. not going blame anyone, but the first place to check is the team locker and rehab area. cleaning it will not be easy, but if it is done regularly, it does not take much time. all the trainer's equipment should be checked and sanitized as they are in constant contact with injured players. last yr was the soap problem, this yr, they do not use the soad to clean????

lastly, anyone coming off surgery should not be allowed in locker and rehab room. they should have all their change of dressing done at the medical facility at UH.

For those of you who are interested in Aloha Stadium repair updates, feel free to ask to see the monthly reports from the Stadium Authority meetings. An update on the turf replacement is forthcoming - hopefully by the Saturday's T-Gate.
BTW - didn't Greg Alexander have to fight a staph infection within a week of being injured?
FYI - the ushers are not directly employed by the Aloha Stadium management. If interested, please ask for information as to who provides the services - for a very stiff fee..

what I was afraid of, Uiato is actually shorter than reported. Volley talk and our own Al listed her as 5' 10, now the 2 inch rule applies to wvb too. She is shorter than Brandt, I hope she has the hops when shes at the net. A lot of the top teams are playing with OH in the 6'2 to 6'4 range, only in Hawaii do we use 5'10 to 5'11 OH and are competitive but can we finish and win at the end of the season with short players.

I think for as far as I can remember the wvb have always been a smaller team height wise but have seem to make it work. I think if we where recruiting short girls with no vertical then I would be concerned but if these girls can make for height in jumping ability then we should be o.k.
But I will say that getting more height will take this program back to promise land more times then we have been in recent years.

The recipient of the HI-5 redemption fees from the New Mexico State T-Gate this coming Saturday will be the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance, a membership-based 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization. Don't forget that PIAA is one of our own!!
Please be sure to bring some eligible cans & bottles from home or work since every nickel counts. Dropped a $30 check in the mail yesterday to Barry Tanouye at Dole Middle School. That's $140 in contributions made on behalf of the Tsai-kos since the Central Arkansas game.

Since I go into the stadium early I usually talk to the ushers. One showed me a list of instructions that they are given. I asked her how she knows what to do when thngs happen. I have yet to come across Captain Hardcore but I have talked to some of the ushers in the Makai and South End Zone and found them to be really nice.

on another note we had much success with the 5'8" setters in the past.
robyn ah mow and kanoe kamanao come to mind.
i believe that their outrageous athletic ability overcame much of the height deficit. at this point a coach with an all american/olympic caliber setter would be happy if they were able to just get enough of a touch to disrupt the slams so the back row can get to them.

Speaking of cheeks...at the UH-UNLV game I was sitting at the end of the row. After a standing cheer, I found myself with only 6" of bench. "Could you please move down a bit?", I asked, "...I only have one cheek on the bench". The visual must have been too much...suddenly I had 2 seats of space.

getting upset by navy was embarassing for nd, but now they want to make excuses by going after navy hc's post game comments. if i was nd, i would just keep quiet cause coach ken and future nd opponents know their tendencies, so correct it. as for their cut block, it is no secret that navy uses it, but officials in college ball are afraid to call it like the nfl. uh was on the receiving end of cut blocks at vegas, so what else is new?????

how to prevent cut blocks in a game???? i think it is simple, coach mc should approach the officials prior to gametime with navy and let them know of this major problem. if navy uses it and is not called, record it, file a complaint with the WAC, and followup to make sure these officials are put on notice.

my own personal perception. it is good to see coach rolo exerting his influence on the offensive plays and getting more into the game. on the defensive side, would like to see the dl, lb, db coaches start to put their imprint on the defense. and lastly, would like to see coach mc be the head coach and trust his asst coach's judgements on plays and players.

I really hope they are able to knock out the staph infections quickly and prevent further outbreaks!
Does anyone know if the stadium treats the turf with a disinfectant prior to games? With all the bodily fluids on the turf I am surprised there are so few infections. Something as simple as bleach/water would probably suffice. Or is the assumption that the daily dose of natural UV would suffice?

#87 ~ I agree with you, Whitey. If there is a way to prevent players from getting hurt due to illegal blocks, bringing the information to the officials attention before the game is reasonable. Puts the onus on the refs.

Coach Shoji believes there is something "Kamana'o-ish" about Ms. Uiato and could give Mafua some "serious" competition at the starting setter position during the off-season.
Funny... I was somewhat "down" following Wahine senior for several reasons I mentioned before, but with the news, the somewhat "almost" official news, about the new Wahine (gotta wait until it's actually "official" with the LOIs) it's back to business again.
Hopefully we'll see how these new young ladies can fill the needs Coach Shoji said we would need sooner than later.
Importantly, I'm interested in the OH situation next season. We know Kanani is a mainstay. She's good and gonna be great. Stephanie Ferrell will need to up her game and Cascioppo will have to up hers as well especially with Michelle Waber coming in, let's see how "chummy" these two get now that they have fullfilled their wish of playing college volleyball together.
Going forward, I'm interested also to see where our serving game will be. Gone next season is the MANA from Aneli and the consistency from Kaufman, Lee, and Brandt.
Ka'aihue is pretty consistent, Kanani is improving, even saw Hewitt take a few "snaps" at the service line in one match this season.

Wow, the Aggies got their share of issues. How we play coming out of the tunnel to start the game and going forward to FINISH it, will speak of how focused the coaching staff kept our players after such a much needed win on Saturday.
I look at the situation last season. We had a big win at home against Nevada last year. In that game we saw a break-out for Greg Alexander as our QB. Then we had some people reporting a very laxed practice the following week before they went up to Logan, Utah.
The rest is history... Another game we should have won.
This time it's kind of the same. Another big win, team must be riding high on emotion, this time can the coaches keep the players focused????
A win is good on Saturday. If we "eek" by it, not good for keeping Hawaii Bowl 2009 hopes up. If we POUND THEM and don't take our foot off their throats until the scoreboard reads 4th 0:00, then can!!!
Reality is NMSU well, sucks.
If they look good against us, even in a loss to us, what does that say?

I can tell you for a fact that they (Aloha Stadium) don't do anything to the turf with regards to "treatment".
The only thing they do is to drag the field to "even out" the "blades" of artifical turf so it doesn't get flat... (So much that has done right?)
I talked story to a stadium usher a few seasons ago and no, this one wasn't a punk.
Anyway, they don't treat it or "sanitize" it.

Not only that but looks like you could actually walk up to it with a crowbar and peel off the current turf.
Last season, during a downpour the smooth concrete ends of the field can get large puddles. I saw a groundscrew person lift the turf in the endzone to allow the water to run off into the drainage system.
Looked real ghetto.

Yeah, name-calling is not nice.
As for over-zealousness, I think it's a matter of good judgment. If somebody is standing the entire game, not so good, and the usher should intervene.
If the person is standing and yelling after a touchdown, that's fine, and the usher might want to considering renewing his chill-pill prescription at Longs.
As for gentlemen's bets, well, that's what happens when some people are still on an interim basis and trying to make a splash. Dobelle was a lot of things, but his common-sense test was sound.

i look at this weekend's game with NaMaSU as being a most challenging one. i have my own personal preference of who should be starting, but i want to see if the warriors will play as a team, and i mean team. they showed vast improvements last sat as a team and the coaches did a satisfactory job. will see!!

I think policing is a case-by-case thing.
For instance, on an airplane, if kids are kicking or whiney or whatever, hey, let it go. It's understandable. We were all kids once, and we all got restless in planes. Bless their hearts for being energetic.
If the large guy hogs the arm rest, let that go, too. People come in all sizes.
If you have an aisle seat, and folks bump into you while walking down the aisle, a simple, "hey, please watch it" will suffice.
But if somebody puts a bag in the foot space in front of you, well, ya kick the stuffing out of the thing the entire flight.
But that's just me.

I noticed that some of the most disagreeable people always complain that they're being censored or judged harshly or whatever.
Not so. I let everything go, as long as they don't attack others specifically. I mean, I've seen some really, uh, different sort of posts. For instance, somebody said Player A should be replaced by Player B, because Player B is so much better. Thing is, Player B isn't even on the roster. So I try to be nice, saying, "I'm not sure ... "
But you let things go because everyone is entitled to an opinion.

One of the basketball referees is my friend. Very diligent guy. Always wanted to be a ref, so bless him.
But he called TWO technicals in an exhibition between UH and BYUH. I mean, c'mon.
So I saw him at the football game, and I said: Two techs.
And then everybody was like: Two techs?
And he says: Hey, I'd tech you if you were at the game.
Funny.
But, I mean, two techs in an exhibition game?

And if it's at the pit, the Lobos are shooting in the bonus in the first six minutes.

I need an interpretation on this one, but there are four post-graduates on the roster now.
I would think that their scholarships could be used by grayshirts or JC transfers in January right? And the postgraduates then could go on non-active scholarships, like how UH pays for Nate Ilaoa or Micah Lau.

i think those tech calls were called for. campbell dunked got up and then got in the guys face who fouled him. not in anger but it was more of an "In 'Yo face!" but he didn't have to.
the other one was on the BYUH guy who started waving his finger (ala Mutumbo) at something after he got called for a foul. i think he was telling his coach no no no, but your friend must've thought it was aimed at him.
at least the refs were not as sucky at the BYUH game like they were at the Hilo or HPU (wahine) games.

you can sit by us any game. i think the seats will be empty for the beginning of the season until everyone else realizes how good a team we actually are. i can't wait to see Mr. Williams shoot on Friday. sucks that Amis is out but we have a bunch of low post guys that have experience and will have to step it up.

Meant to ask a long time ago, but who is Coach Duff?
He's Terrance Duffield, a retired Marine. (Yes, I've received the e-mails that there's no such thing as an "ex-Marine.")
He was helpful in UH pursuing recruits. He helped steer Adam Leonard, Leon Wright-Jackson and Tim Grasso to UH, and helped place Alex Green in a JC.
He was hired as a UH graduate assistant in 2007, and helped a lot in the scout work, breaking down videos that would be used to form game plans. I think he got burnt out at the end of the season, and left the program after the Sugar Bowl.
He still lives in Lanikai with his wife and three kids. I think he runs a fishing business, something like fishbone.

Thank you for your note about how you had been having problems at times with the blog software also. It is so frustrating when the blog doesn't refresh when I post something--it just hangs and doesn't even indicate that my post went through. So, I have to close that tab (just refreshing doesn't work when the software hangs) and load the blog again to see if my post is there. And the blog loads very slowly for me sometimes. For each post I have to make 5 clicks and wait after each one when the software/server is being difficult...
Other times the blog software works fine. But the delays makes it too hard to post sometime. That was a shame today because I took a work break and found all kinds of interesting info on NMSU, including quotes that they said about UH this week and earlier. I just gave up after awhile today and threw away a bunch of articles that related to this week's game.

Coach Duff always was part of the Corbin Brown situation.
Brown was a DB at a Las Vegas High School.
I was in LaTech when JJ told Duff to offer a scholie to Brown. They call Brown. Brown accepts, and then tells the LV media.
The family is then waiting for a visit. Father keeps pressing. Coaches keep hedging, because they're involved in the perfect season.
Finally, the coaches tell Brown's dad that he is free to pursue other offers. Father is irked, thinking the offer was revoked. He voices displeasure, then the offer is revoked.
There were erroneous reports that the offer was made without JJ's approval. Not true at all. JJ did sign off on it.

I finished a big work project today so I did all kinds of research on NMSU in the hour I took a break from work. Then the blog software just made it so hard to post it!
The sad thing is that there doesn't seem to be any problem with other forums, just this blog. Even Esme's site works fine and all the other sports sites I look at do not have problems with posting. But I didn't want to post the NMSU info anywhere else so I just threw it away when I got frustrated with the blog software/server. The stat stuff I came up with the trends for NMSU this season was interesting (at least to me), especially since they are changing QBs for the UH game and their coach is talking about doing what they did earlier this season...
RIght now I have 2 tabs that are open because I posted to the blog with them...and right now both just say "Loading..." and are permanently stuck. So, I have to go to my WB bookmark, then go to today's entry, then check to see if the comment posted.
My browser says that my Corbin Brown post hasn't posted yet, but I see it in post #145 above. Weird. I'll check the blog tomorrow to see if I can post then--maybe try a different browser too.

Al most of my problems occur while on WB or HA page, or switching apps if I am done with the page. If I am on HA online, I can read sports article and after I am done, I try to switch to local news and it freezes, "not responding", the hour glass is on and I can't swtich, close or scroll, everything freezes.

Block on Purcell seemed clean and he will learn from that. Gotta give props for the effort in pursuit. LWJ - one word - AWESOME. O-line worked their butts off giving Moniz time and wide open holes for LWJ and AG.

As far as the conference championship banners, if memory serves me correctly, Rich Sheriff (Stan Sheriff Arena Manager) and/or Teri Chang (Assistant AD for Facilities and Events) were looking into options and costs regarding this issue. Our thoughts were to do something for the arena sports...
As a side note, besides the Tsaiko's potentially assisting us with this project, the wahine volleyball booster club has also offered to help, so maybe we can move this project forward sooner than later...
Certainly with the economic conditions we are facing as a department on a macro scale, we certainly do appreciate your offer to help!

Whitey - cut blocks ARE NOT illegal. You can tell a ref to look for them all you want, but nothing's going to get called, because cut blocks are legal blocks. Cut blocks just mean that a SINGLE player goes low to get another player on the ground or pushed off the action. Chop blocks, where a defender is engaged high and another player goes low, are illegal.

During my lunch break I'll try madeinhawaii's suggestion for disabling some Microsoft plug-ins to see if I can get my Firefox browser to work with this blog. I don't have any problems with reading the articles on the Advertiser.

I wanted to post something about 3 weeks ago about all the staff infections.. ok just kidding =)
Last week when I read that more players were getting treated for staph issues for first thing comes to mind was the locker room and equipment. Athletic equipment is often the most overlooked.
I almost purchased this system for our business last year but decided not to go that route. but I love the machine. http://www.esporta.ca/

here's a thought. Has anyone (official types) looked into the high school players who have used Aloha Stadium to see if their players with "rug burns" have turned into the same staph infections affecting the Warriors?
If not, the stadium may not be the source of the problem. the problem may point to the UH facilities on campus as the common denominator.

It sounds like your internet connection is weak or faltering. Unplug all connections between your computer and modem, clean and replug. If you have no other computer connected to the modem, clean the cable leading to the modem as well.
Check your connection speed with some online tester like.. Http://www.speedtest.net
Make sure your connection speed is up to snuff.

Coach Duff is credited with "steering" more recruits to Hawaii than was mentioned by ST including several frosh and starters on the current roster. He was simply amazing and worked 24/7 for peanuts along with Jeff Reinebold (before JR became a full-time position coach).
Both coaches exhibited extraordinary energies and were cyber techies that surfed the net relentlessly although the Marine took it to the highest level.
While sungod was somewhat of a shotgun recruiter he did score, but Duff was zeroed-in with youngsters, understood their culture and simply had a gift for selection and pursuit seldom seen by UH recruiters.
His software game preparation and applications contributed to Hawaii's highest D ranking under JJs tenure.
Too bad.
Corbin Brown is doing well at AFA as a DB and his family is a class act.
The kid really wanted to attend UH.
No point in digressing but character issues involving some still linger. Duff is not one of them.
Again, too bad, Corbin's childhood teammate, Keola, was also considering UH before everything imploded.
Coach Duff is nationally recognized as a fly fisherman and is nationally certified by a national association (IGFA) and I believe the only one with captain status in Hawaii.

You can believe bigname coaches around the country who are ardent fly fishermen have been on Duff's tour here in Hawaii, so his links to football hasnt waned bc of his business success.

Ex-NaMaSU HC, Hal Mumme is at McMurry College in Texas. This article from last week talks about the progress his current team is making. They went from an 0'fer last year and a continuing 17-game losing streak to winning 4 in a row. He's still using his "Air Raid" offense.
Found it interesting that Abilene has three college teams: McMurry and Hardin-Simmons in D3 and D2 Abilene Christian.
