If you're keeping score at home, there's a site that charted all of the 2009 preseason football predictions from national publications.
Even the best had their misses. Phil Steele was largely correct in his predictions, and he essentially was on the mark with a predicted co-sixth-place finish for the Warriors. The Warriors finished in a three-way tie for fifth in the WAC.
But Steele predicted Oregon would finish sixth in the Pac-10, Cincinnati fifth in the Big East, BYU first in the Mountain West .and Alabama eighth nationally.
And that's why only long-time AARP members win state lotteries.

Good Morning Gangeez!
Yes, Stretch is the man.
Great fight by the Wahine, but the math wasn't on their side. 5'10" into 6'5" won't go. All the same, the Wahine are to be commended for their most excellent efforts. They will be back in the final four and Kanani Danielson will be leading the charge!

Like Ho'ohiki said yesterday, how can Dave Shoji not be in the AVCA coaches hall of fame? I'm confident that he will be inducted later, however when reviewing the list of those that are already in, I don't understand how most of them were more worthy of inclusion than Coach Dave.
What a blatant omission.

I don't know if it was Ferd's article regarding the BCS and women's volleyball, but he really hit it on the head and we saw it all played out yesterday. Big BCS schools that make big BCS dollars from their two Big revenue engines can go out and dominate where they choose by pushing dollars in that direction.
We don't have that luxury. That being said, one has to absolutely marvel at the unbelievable coaching ability we have in Dave Shoji. For all of those folks who have questioned his tactics and the like, please go back and have another slice of humble pie.
What he has been able to do year in and year out with smallish players, with possibly one 2nd team all - American against those BCS fed schools is unbelivable. AND, he manages to have the nation's highest attendance numbers on top of that.
If anyone is out of place in the UH Athletic system, it's coach Shoji. Just imagine what he could do with a budget like what they have at USC, Oklahoma or Alabama. Thank goodness he's a Hawaii boy who loves the islands and loves the UH Wahine program. The rest have yet to rise to what he has been able to accomplish with what he has been dealt with in creating a competitive program year in and year out.
Replacing him will be a task.
December 18th, 2009 at 9:10 am
I Love Pecan Pie,
New Mexico Bowl: Fresno State vs. Wyoming
St. Pete: Central Florida vs. Rutgers
The WAC *needs* a boost going into next season, so I'm cheering for all the WAC teams (aside from BSU) in their bowl games this year. It would be very good for the WAC for Fresno State to beat a MWC today. I think Nevada will beat SMU pretty badly, think that Idaho will win their bowl game in Boise, and don't know if BSU or TCU will win.
The BSU/TCU matchup is the only one where I might not mind if the WAC team lost...since BSU wants to join the MWC anyway and if BSU wins then they would be more attractive to the MWC.
December 18th, 2009 at 9:11 am
Buffoman,
I agree with everything you said in #43. I cannot imagine UH without Coach Shoji.

Stretch certainly is a man. He is even a good man. Sometimes he's a sober man. At other times a bolo head man. Most days he's a traveling man. A few days a week he's a working man. More days a week he's a marketing man. A few times a month he's a delayed by mechanical errors man. One time he was a designated driver, wine tasting man. Five or six times a year he's a Warrior road trip man. During the football off- season he's a finance da Tsaiko social events man.
For those reasons, "YOU DA MAN, STRETCH!"

(To add to Buffoman's earlier post)
Listening to Coach Shoji this morning on 1420 and BC brought up the eventual retirement of Shoji and what kind of sustainability the program will have in the eventual post-Shoji era.
While some may believe it's a topic that isn't an issue, I think it is. Dave Shoji said he cannot see himself doing this for "5 more years". Shoji ain't going anywhere soon as he was quoted in looking forward to what next season brings and the promise of the 2011 squad, but the pressure lies directly with the athletic administration and unfortunately the Board of Regents.
While we all agree the continued financial and athletic improvement of the real big money-maker that is UH football, WAHINE VOLLEYBALL IS A PROGRAM THAT MUST BE PROTECTED!!! What Dave Shoji has built and what the fans of Wahine volleyball have come to expect is something that CANNOT BE COMPROMISED!!! It would be a BIG blow to the athletic program in the eventual post-Shoji era if the expected success of the women's volleyball team were to fade, even just a little bit (losing a WAC match here and there, not making it past a sub-regional, etc..). Ultimately the morale of the a lot of fans would waiver, not to mention the profit the women's program brings in on an annual basis. If anything, eventually Dave Shoji SHOULD be part of the hiring process.
We've see the collegiate powers of women's volleyball shift away from the past West coast schools and move towards the BUDGET-HEAVY schools like a Penn State, Texas, Florida, etc… So far, we've been able to remain relevant through all of this and sad to say, it's all been on Dave Shoji's work with his assistants over the years acting as additional eyes and ears on recruiting and molding athletes into volleyball players. The budget has not increased significantly to keep up to date with the aforementioned schools so we've had to do it "Shoji-style".
Whenever that day comes when Coach Shoji decides he's done, some SERIOUS SLACK will have to be picked up by the new coaching staff AND the "powers that be at lower campus and their superiors to ensure that the most successful and consistent athletic program in the history of the university continues to be exactly that.
If they drop the ball on this, there may be no coming back. Bob Wagner once described the UH administration as having a "if it ain't broken no need to invest more into it" philosophy. I think we all have our own thoughts on this…
Wahine volleyball already has that stigma about it. The casual fan may not know who the players are but will know that the team is good this year and the next and the next and so forth. That is great that the program has been able to create that kind of image for itself, however, I believe too many people take the success of the Wahine for granted or maybe they take Dave Shoji for granted and that he will always be here. If UH administration looks at the program in this similar light, then my biggest fears will come true.
Improvements across the board for UH athletics is necessary and a good foundation for the future, but maintaining what already is successful on a consistent basis is vital to the foundation that is already in place.

You da man, Stretch.

December 18th, 2009 at 10:31 am
Congratulations to all the graduates. Great job. It's not easy being a student-athlete with all the expectations to do well. It must be stressful.
Not to mention that it's diffecult to get the courses that they want sometimes. I graduated in 4 years and it was a lot of hard work too with no computers, printers, etc. Todays kids have the best of everything w/ technological advances.

December 18th, 2009 at 10:49 am
Participating in sports has given these athletes an opportunity to go to college and to graduate. Graduating from college will give some of these athletes an opportunity to change the lives of their children and grandchildren. When we support our athletes, we not only support them as athletes, but also as students. Some of these athletes would have never had the opportunity had it not been for sports. Of course we all love to see our athletes succeed on the field, courts, tracks, and in the pools. But more important than that, is to support the University's mission to educate young people. It is that mission which should make us proud to be fans.

Pomai,
You should still be having a nice day. Frazier ISN'T around.
December 18th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
#95 Kazz
Sorry Kazz da mere mention of his name ruins my day.......... I know a lot of people are down on JJ for leaving and the way he left, but I put the whole blame on the fumbler, I know "IF" is a wish word, but I feel that IF they had done what they should have done that he would still be here and we would be still at the top of the WAC and in a BCS bowl game. This is just my own opinion and please no need for any response.
December 18th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Pomai,
Don't know if I ever told anyone this, but early last year there was this large gift basket sitting on the countertop at home. I just arrived from work and I didn't eat lunch so I was kinda hungry. Since the basket was already opened I took a cheese and cracker snack pack thing out of it.
Come to find out, Frazier originally sent the basket to a "supporter/business friend" of his as a thank you as this was around the time he got fired from UH.
Long story short, the person it was intended for didn't want it and gave it to us.

Hunkering down for the impending snowstorm.
This shouldn't affect the Monday morning commute if all the snow falls by early Sunday morning. Just need the temps to get up to ~35-40 degrees on Sunday so the snow will start melting away post-storm.
December 18th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
wafan,
You flying Alaska or Northwest?
If you're flying Alaska, prepare to stop in Oakland for some extra fuel. Some folks were telling me that the headwinds across the Pacific are really strong today.
If you're flying Northwest, you'll make it non-stop, but wouldn't be surprised if your flight ended up being closer to 7 hours.

Have a safe trip!
December 18th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Regarding # 93
What also helps the graduation rate for men's BB is that Coach Nash is indeed serious about it. A coach checks every class for attendance by players, nipping problems in the bud.

Be safe!

Howzit Tsai-kos!
Congrats to the Wahine and Dave Shoji on a great season.
Congrats to all those graduating tomorrow.
CRW - is this your first DC snowstorm? Watch out, the place shuts down if there's a half-inch on the ground!
December 18th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
CRW - a newspaper columnist once characterized DC as "a city northern enough to get snow, but southern enough not to know what to do about it".
December 18th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
D1,
Don't be mentioning "12 inches" when Koa-Mahu stay lurking!!!

December 18th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Okay Kazz, since you got me thinking, I'm "sure" they already thought about this at both lower and upper campus.
Why not take advantage of the fact that Dave has won 1000 games. They should have thought about it before but never too late to do it. Here's the thought.
Get 1000 friends to donate $1000 to start the endowment for the new Coach Shoji Wahine Volleyball floor. That $1 million endowment would help start the process to perpetually fund this program. Doing it while Dave is still in the game is a good move as he could actually be the catalyst to build that beyond the initial $1 million. He would feel very good leaving the program at that point knowing that he left a legacy that would have not allowed his work to have gone in vain.
Make sense?

Kazzie - no worries. Today, Stretchie is DA MAN!!!
December 18th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
jm2375:
Yes, first DC snowstorm. I was just thinking...this storm is estimated to drop 10-20 inches in the area. Isn't that how much snow DC usually gets in one entire winter season?
Funny you should characterize DC like that, because you can separate the 'southerners' from the 'northerners' just by conversing about the weather. Of course, my incessant moaning and groaning about the temps easily pigeonholes me into one of the above categories.
December 18th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
Al,
Now that you mentioned it, thought Clare Warwick was to graduate fall 2009.
As for the volleyball ladies, Kaufman still has some time and Brandt is to graduate Spring 2010. I think the other seniors are set to graduate next year.
December 18th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Looking forward to a movie review!
CRW- keep your pipes warm (run the water every now and then), put the car in the garage, have food and beverages stocked up, batteries, flashlights, candles and a good sense of humor.

I'm going to the Hawaii Bowl, five!
CRW,
If you have a car, make sure you have an emergency blanket, flashlight, water (take some with you when you leave the house), food, batteries, shovel. I've given out two wool Army surplus blankets to people in accidents when I lived in AZ. One was to a young boy who was in the back of a pickup w/ a camper shell that rolled over in snowy roads on the freeway. Scary! The kid came out of the back of the truck barefooted. Makes me cold thinking about it.
Always wear a cap (woolen knit preferred). You lose 50% of your heat through the top of your head. Stay WARM, CRW!

Momo and Mrs. Momo are going to the Hawaii Bowl. They bought their tickets over the summer and will be sitting in the same seats they have Warrior season tickets for. Between the basketball tournament (they have season tickets for UH in that sport also and they bring their youngest grandchild) and football, next week is a busy sports time for them!
December 18th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
BUFFOMAN: Re your $1,000 for Coach Shoji's 1000th win, there was a proposal to raise 1000 fans to contribute $100 for his 1000th victory.
Whoever was suppose to spearhead it - the UH PR person or whoever - flubbed and never got off the ground. They should have struck while the iron was hot. Dummies!!!!!!!
I sent mine in (UHF for WVB) and perhaps a couple of others did too but it never flew off the ground.

6-foot 7-inch guys are a dime a dozen in Wyoming.
He won't stand out there.
Probably the only thing they offer him there is extra

Maybe Made-In-Hawaii could make him one

Tommui,
Hey! Did you see your name up on the glass by Gate A? had to look for mine took me a while but mine is all the way the opposite end. They put up the names of the donors of the 1000 donations for 1000 wins on paper volleyballs up at Gate A.
Anyway, it's been sad really. I don't think it was in the verbage of $100 per person, but just any size donation from anyone and the goal is 1000 people. There is a "meter" showing where they currently are with getting 1000 donations of any size and it's not good...
December 18th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
KAZZ: re 152 - no, I did not. Thought it was going to be anon. or in my Greek/geek name but not in day-to-day name.
I think the original intent was 1000 people at $100 which would have made recruiting trips easier.
December 18th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
Buffoman,
We just got a new BEAUTIFUL GREEN teraflex courtesy of the good people at Chevron. Since they paid for it, not sure how re-naming it would go over with them seeing as they are corporate sponsors of UH athletics.
How about renaming Gym 2 in honor of Dave Shoji?
I dunno. People like the late Dr. Donnis Thompson should have had things named after them, but don't know what the critera is for that.
December 18th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Did I win? Did I win? Did I win?
If so, give them to Al's no. 1 son who took care of me in Las Vegas.
December 18th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
On paper he would indeed! But in our defensive system and what Coach Mack prefers not sure he'd be an ideal choice, unless he'd be pretty damn quick with those vitals.

Just got home from the movie theatre.
Firstly, Avatar is not that bad. A little lengthy, though, at 2 hrs and 40 minutes, but the special effects were really good.
Now getting home from the theatre, the exit road out of the parking lot wasn't even plowed. The conversation with my buddy sort of went like this:
CRW: The road out of here isn't even plowed.
Buddy: Yeah, that sucks.
(Makes way onto exit road)
CRW: Looks like those two cars (ahead of us) are stuck.
Buddy: Go around 'em.
(My car proceeds to get stuck as well attempting to go around two stuck cars)
CRW: Buddy, get out and start pushing.
(Car eventually gets rolling, we make exit onto side street)
Yeah, I admit to running a couple red-lights on the way home which I know I really shouldn't have done, but the snow accumulation on the ground was enough to where I knew that if I stopped at the light I was gonna get stuck again.
I drive a little Corolla with 14" tires so I know that even a few inches of accumulation on the ground is gonna strand me.
I'm just glad I'm home finally. Looks like I won't be heading anywhere tomorrow.

I think that it is shameful that some retailers gouge US military personnel who are deployed overseas! Walmart charges *5x* more to ship to an APO address while Amazon did not charge any extra to ship to an APO address and Target charged *less* to ship to an APO address. All shipping to APO addresses goes to New York and then the US military pays for the rest of the shipping, so why is WalMart charging 5x more to our troops than they charge their non-military customers?

The list of donors for the SERVING UP ONE THOUSAND Fund Drive should include $35 from the Tsai-kos. I'll check it out on Tuesday and if it isn't there, I'll make sure that it get listed.
Here's the challenge that we can make amongst ourselves. Let's have a fund drive consisting of a pledge of $20 per month per person from January through August, 2010, when the next season begins. That would be $160 per person or $320 per couple. I believe that there are about 50 regulars in the Tsai-ko `Ohana. That means we could raise $8,000. I am willing to coordinate it if there's any interest in doing so.
We could also have a dedicated community-based HI-5 Drive. Since July we've raised over $27,000 in four different drives for four different organizations.
Count DaDocs for attending the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl. We're in Section JJ, Row 15.
You da man, Stretch. Hope it isn't too late.

I'm looking at the list of the thirteen members of the football team set to graduate today and can only imagine how happy and satisfied they feel.
Not everyone rises to the surface, or passes the challenges of both their work on the field and in the classroom, but they did. And it's a testimonial to the type of persons they are. And to Coach Mack and his staff for emphasizing that his boys do well in their academics. It also should be noted that time to time the coach excuses his players from practices so that they can catch up on an important lecture or school work, which is an example of the coach having the player's best interest at heart.
With Coach Mack being an influence, overseer, and enforcer of his players doing well in the classroom it has paid dividends in his player's futures.
For these thirteen graduates they'll take away fond memories of playing in some of the biggest games in UH history, like the Sugar Bowl. But there's no fonder memory for them when they walk away from the stage today with a diploma in their hand because it's real and long lived.
Noticeably absent from this list may be a player. Or a few. But to those players ,hey, hang in there and keep plugging away because having your diploma in hand defines you better as a person.
To the thirteen graduates, I join in with others in extending my best wishes.

Hi bighilofan2!
Outside is looking white white. It's been falling since 9pm last night, and doesn't look to let up until tomorrow morning. There are 20mph winds coming through as well as the snow. Makes it feel like its 10 degrees outside.
Snow accumulation is too much for my little car, as I will get stuck almost instantly if I go off the main snow routes. Heck, I can't even get out of the parking lot of my apartment complex!
Will be home today. At least I have enough food to suffice.

People are already trying to come up with names for this storm. Some of the one's I've heard:
"Snowpocalypse"
"Capital Crippler"
"Beltway Blizzard"
"Blizzardgate"
Already at a foot of snow with projections for another foot before this storm passes. The heaviest of the snow is still expected to fall for another 3-4 hours before things start to lighten up a little bit.
Glad to be staying home. The Metro (subway) has stopped running service to all of its above-ground stations (which is almost half of the entire system) and all the local bus services have called it quits for the day. Reagan National Airport is a ghost-town w/r/t incoming or outgoing flights. Complete standstill.

would be nice one time da whole team goes Hanauma Bay, excursion. 30 at a time wit masks. a lifetime memory for all, a lifetime awesome memory for some.
gotta think outside the box for Travaunn and Daniel. some of our players give off da vibes.... gotta give off the right vibes, so we get these kinda
recruits. no can leave it all on coaches' lips. day can only talk so much. Hawaii has become a show me state. Its not about begging. Its about showing these guys what they've never experienced before, that a good fun atmosphere exists alongside hard nosed football. Good fun atmosphere. Thats where we come into da picture. Ke Akua's helpers.
Go Warriors.

Congratulations to 'kio' and all of the UH Graduates!
To 'whitey' on # 190,
I also was wondering what Colt Brennan's prospects would be in the coming year (with the Redskins). I heard one "expert" the other night that said (in his opinion), that Colt was as good as gone, since Zorn & Cerrato (Serrato?) are pretty much gone. That same guy promoted them keeping Jason Campbell, whether he's the "guy" or whether they keep him until a newly drafted QB could be broken in. Even suggested they put the franchise label on him to keep him. My rebuttal to that crappola is that Jason Campbell is decent at best. They'd probably have to triple his salary to give him what a franchise player would make.
Because most prognosticators say Mike Shanahan will be the next Head Coach who will work with Bruce Allen (GM), I don't think either of those guys is stupid. Why should they ship Colt out when they only have to pay him something like 400 thou for this upcoming year? If Shanahan implements a West Coast Offense, I honestly think a healthy Colt Brennan can go rings around Campbell in a West Coast Offense competition. Hopefully, Shanahan would give Colt a legitimate shot, something that that jerk Zorn never did. And Zorn used to be one of my favorite QBs when he played and as I said before, it was truly hypocritical of him (in terms of philosophy) to have been a 'gunslinging" roll-out lefty QB, only to become a constipated play-calling & footwork obsessed drop-back QB proponent. If the guy could jump into a time machine and go back, he'd see that CB was very similar (in being a play-maker) to young Jim Zorn, except ironically, Colt is even more of a pocket passer than Zorn EVER was.
Screw Zorn, Go Mike Shanahan! Give Colt the reins to the Offense (IMHO Colt is BETTER than Cutler) and give him a chance to make you look like a genius!

NCAA is gonna be real careful when attempting to investigate and sanction powerful programs like USC. They have all the KALA in the world and would be ready to fight off any allegations in court.
