The wonder years

December 31st, 2009
By

While I was pretending to work yesterday, I noticed my cohorts working on end-of -decade stories.

Decade is ending?

This is what happens when your cell phone is your watch. It seemed like only yesterday we assigned a business writer to exclusively report on Y2K. The world was supposed to go into chaos when the calendar struck '00 and our computers were to read it as "1900." Of course, I never understood why on New Year's 1999 the computers didn't read it as 1899. But I digress. Then again, it was a decade ago when our entire sports department had only  one computer that connected to the Internet.

As my cohorts tell me, it was quite a decade. Jessica Simpson said: "Is this chicken, what I have, or is this fish? I know it's tuna, but it says, 'Chicken of the Sea.'" Later in the decade, Tara Reid said: "I make Jessica Simpson look like a rock scientist."

And, yes, my cohorts tell me the decade brought us American Idol, Project Runway, Survivor, Lost, MySpace, Twitter, Facebook and the hanging chad. (I wonder what ever happened to Friendster, MySpace's predecessor?) Oh, and blogs.

But it also had to be the most entertaining — and successful — decade in UH football history, right? June Jones. Rolo the quarterback. Tim Chang.  H. The Warriors, and  The Warrior. The Hawaii Bowl. Ashley Lelie. Travis LaBoy. Vince Manuwai. The 220s. Chad Owens. The King (Samson Satele), Nasti and the Heisman Trophy finalist (Colt Brennan). Davone and Ryan. Grice-Mullins and Grice Mullen. Colt mania. Eo Na Toa. The Iceman. The haka. The ha‘a. The haka again. "I've never known a Texan to back down from a fight before. I guess their coach isn't from Texas." "I decided to come back for my senior year." "We wanted it badder." "Balls to the walls." The Sugar Bowl. Hawai‘i Pono‘i. Coach Mack.  Rolo the coach. Princess Leila. Princess Leila's videos. Adam and Solly. Blaze. Estacio. Salas ...

Enjoy the moments. You don't have to be a rock scientist to know they pass quickly.

Then again, you always can relive them on Youtube, like these:

  5. Bulla:

    Aloha Tsaikos,

Mahalo for all the love and support for 'The Beast'; he'll be back on the 'aina next week, but wanted me to say thank you. He still has to go through some hoops but there is light at the end of the tunnel :)

Our family was humbled by yesterday's posting and subsequent comments, truly humbled..... we pray that 'The Beast' stays healthy, and that he can be a blessing to the Warriors.

Once again, mahalo for all the support, and may 2010 be filled with happiness, joy and prosperity for everyone. HAPPY NEW YEAR

    Top 5

    Bulla,

You must be one proud papa with the Beast and his heart of a Warrior. I put my money on the Beast rising to the top of the class and being another Warrior walk-on success story.

  7. gmahoney:

    ST,

    Thanks for those memories....

  8. Bulla:

    AZ
only time will tell...but with God's blessings good things will happen, and all for God's glory, not in our time but in His time. Ryan will do whatever it takes, whatever the coaches want, to make a positive contribution to the team. He can't wait to have the opportunity to be on the Scout team during his redshirt year....all will work out for the best. We just are grateful and feel blessed to have this opportunity. Mahalo for your kind words and support.....shoot me an email at 808bulla at gmail.com

    Great Morning All!

Wow, got a little choked up watching those videos....

like the proud Papa says, "Make memories, make memories, make memories."

It was, indeed, an event-filled decade that saw the team soar to new heights...quite the ride.

  14. Bulla:

    d1,

  20. jm2375:

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

    Happy New Year's Eve!

Bulla - good luck to the Beast and you and Lynette. You guys are truly a class act.

Some of us actually have to work today. I just hope I'm not in the office at midnight.

  21. LizKauai (iPhone):

ST. We are blessed to see these days. One of my favorite things this decade had bee The Warrior Beat and its Ohana or Tsai-kos.

    Mahalo and Aloha Kakahiaka!

  22. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Happy New Years Gangeez!!! :) :) :)

I guess Brew will be back on later to do some fireworks.

This had been a wonderful year, and I pray the next year is and indeed the next decade is a great one for all of us!

    Have a great day, all!

  23. LizKauai (iPhone):

jm2375- vaca is over. Back to work for me!

Hiya Bulla! So, snowflake is turning to raindrop
    Outstanding!

  24. LizKauai (iPhone):

    Autospeller. Argh.
"Fave thing has been the Warrior Beat and its family of Tsai-kos. "

  25. jm2375:

Liz - what vacation? I took work home last weekend and am on standby this weekend. I will happy if I survive the month of January.

  26. oldie:

    Morning Tsaikos!

Thanks for the highlights of the decade, ST. Some of us can't even recall the last year.

By the way, wasn't there going to be a year end contest?

  27. djmitcho:

Good Morning All! I hope everyone has good last day of 2009. I hope everyone will be able to celebrate with friends and family to bring in the new year. Please be safe tonight and if you suckin' em up, make sure you have a designated driver...or just crash where you stay.

  28. (Jesse) James:

    Good morning Tsaikos....

Just wanted to wish everyone and prosperous, joyous, and Happy New Year....stay safe out there...

and I agree with Liz...one of the highlights of the decade has to be meeting up with the Tsaikos and the tremendous bond of friendship we now share...and have shared for several years...truly amazing and God's blessing.

  29. Slugger:

Happy New Year to all of the Tsaikos!

The start of the next decade looks to be full of fun, family, football, food, and friends, as it was this past year. Hoping those who are healing feel better soon.

    Stay safe out there tonight!

In case you missed it, yesterday's funnnnny! link by

So THAT is why Corey Neilsen chose UH...Im sorry, all I could think of was Kiffen and player hostesses after seeing that pic.

It looks like the Texas Tech fans are pretty pissed. Check out this spoof video on YouTube. I thought it was funny but it got LOL funny around the 2:55 mark....

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqYbKWW9vZl

  31. I Love Pecan Pie:

    Oooops---too late...
It seems to be deleted by You Tube,
probably because it took a German movie
and added spoofs in English about Texas Tech
firing of coach Leach. Oh well...you missed a
great one. Having said that, I luv coach Mac
and think even he would had laughed at it.

  32. I Love Pecan Pie:

Wait a minute, try this link: (looks same but it worked)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqYbKWW9vZI

  33. tommui:

    Good morning good people!

Happy New Year to one and all.

  34. bb:

I just watched that link again. If you don't want to sit through the entire spoof just watch between around 2:45 and 3:10. Poor Mack being the part the joke.

  35. PowderPuff:

Happy New Year's Eve, everyone. Be safe out there...it's going to be a wild night.

ST - thank you for sharing those links. Those moments make all of us UH Warrior fans proud.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  36. midori7:

    Morning Tsaikos!

ST - thanks for the links. Still get teary eyed no matter how many times I've seen it.

Hope everyone enjoys New Year's Eve but please be safe!

  37. I Love Pecan Pie:

And I love Coach Mac and the UH team...
And I am sorry if I have offended anyone by reposting that You Tube video. To me, it was
funny because it reminded me of when we lost
coach Jones...and reflected how probably most
of us felt. Anyhow, if you can't smile and poke
fun, you will have a long dreary life. But I digress.
Oh well, it was fun, to be here while it lasted.
    Wooosh and out...maybe till August.
    Sayonara everyone..

  38. madeinhawaii:

    Morning everyone...
    Happy Old Year...

Wow... 10 years ago I had as many computers connected to the internet as the Tizer did.

  39. madeinhawaii:

Come to think of it... I had already met my wife online the year before.. She was in Paris working for Compuserve and I was here in Hawaii trying to get as much free time online by being a volunteer trouble shooter for several forums on Compuserve as well as a sysop for a few chat rooms. I believe it was $3.45 an hour to be online and there was no broadband.

Compuserve tried to bill me $700 one month. Claimed I was online 24 hours a day for weeks.

  40. madeinhawaii:

Telephone company offered long distance and international packages through various services. If you didn't sign up for one, every call would cost you an arm and a leg. I remember switching services from Sprint to AT&T one month and the phone company screwed up... They ended up billing me $965 for long distance calls because they said I wasn't signed up for any package...

Thank goodness those days are behind us.
Now my cell phone provides us with enough long distance minutes for all our personal and business use and one telephone card a month covers our international call needs.

  41. chawan_cut:

lets not forget the birth of this blog and the tsaiko ohana!

  42. Stephen Tsai:

I know this is an oxymoron, but it's time to start making new memories.

  43. chawan_cut:

    Stephen,
thanks for posting that version of Hawai'i Pono'i at the sugar bowl. the other one wasn't so good.
speakin of old videos, this was one of the best new year's eve parties ever....

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huERVOe8Ii0

  44. chawan_cut:

i make new memories all the time. thanks to short term memory!

  45. EH NO MAKE !:

Rainbow Warriors basketball team struggling. Terrible actually.

Rainbow Wahine, not that bad considering I guess.

    Warriors volleyball starts next.

    Soon it's Rainbow baseball time.

Then YES, Spring football. When all is good again, or bad again, since Greg McMackin is still going to be the coach right.

Boy, if I had one wish.

"Tsaikos" - I enjoy reading through all your thoughts daily and I appreciate allowing me to vent as well.

Have a Happy New Year one and all.

  46. chawan_cut:

    btw,
what do we call this past decade? i read somewhere its called the "aughts"? that just don't sound right.
    the "00's"?
    the "ones digits?"

    just wonderin....

  47. d1島:

    c_c,

    Maybe the O's?

    as in: '01, '02, '03, etc.

  48. madeinhawaii:

    Chawan..

Don't know what we aught to call dem Ohs

  49. al:

    aloha 2009.
    thanks for the memories.

looking ahead in the world of warrior/rainbow sports...

-pivotal seasons for warrior football and rainbow warrior basketball coaching staffs.
-great anticipation for women's basketball as we seem to be getting it right with dana takahara-dias.
-even further anticipation ahead with men's volleyball led by charlie wade and a new found hero in umlauft. i think they will surprise many.
-another pivotal season for baseball rainbows. at least we got some of the local boys in the house now.
-really looking forward to wahine volleyball team next year as we return many and begin our transition with a much larger lineup.

    ...nuff said

Wishes for a Safe & Happy New Year to everyone!!

Ecstatic to hear that the Beast will already be making an impact by helping our O-Line improve thru challenging them on the Scout Team.

Still awaiting more good news on the recruiting front
    (I hope...I hope...I hope...)!

Also agree with ST and others about making new memories.

chawan_cut on # 44 - Good one. I was going to say you took the words right out of my mouth, but I 'forget'...

  58. madeinhawaii:

    Anybody got new year resolutions?

  59. madeinhawaii:

Wow.. Stanford's holding their own against Oklahoma today

  60. wafan:

    mih . . .

I think I have a conference at that time so no break for me. More unpaid work days.

  61. madeinhawaii:

    wafan,

Life of a teacher... give some.. take a little.. give some more.. take even less... give it all.. then they figure you like putting in all that "free time," eh?

But one day, many of those kids will come back as very successful adults and make you proud, like they were your own offspring. Imagine if one of them end up saving the world, eh?

  62. koakane™:

aloja everyone popping in to wish you'all a very happy new years eve. reconfirming the be safe to all on this last day of 09.

    ST,

Did Siaki Craven's send in his LOI?

    http://utah.scout.com/a.z?s=365&p=8&c=1&nid=3089274

This URL indicates that he did.

  67. wafan:

    mih . . .

I agree. Hearing from the former kids really makes my day. Last month one called from Korea where he finally realized I was right all along. I had been telling him to seriously look into teaching and research. But he was more interested, shockingly, in making money with his EE. While in Korea it finally dawned on him that he liked helping others. Duh.

He is now looking at pursuing an MEd and, eventually, a PhD in educational research with an emphasis in childhood cognitive reasoning and development. I think he will end up at either UW or OSU.

  68. madeinhawaii:

Navy ties it up. Navy and the Big Mo ...

  69. Stephen Tsai:

Cravens signs in February because he enrolls in June.
    He's not a mid-year guy.

  70. wafan:

    And, lest I forget . . .

    Happy New Year to all!!!

May 2010 be a bright and healthy year for each of us, our families, and our growing circle of friends. And, let civility and peace rule our lives.

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  71. wafan:

    Bulla . . .

Nothing wrong with the old PURPLE!

But, green, white and black will look better on the Beast.

  72. madeinhawaii:

I think I spent too many years in Japan... I find it hard to say "Happy New Year" before the actual start of the New Year.

BUT the best New Year celebration I ever experienced was in Granada, Spain...

Bunches of grapes... each handful traded for a kiss ... every glass of wine making the evening more festive ...ole!

  73. madeinhawaii:

    ST..

    thanks

  74. (Jesse) James:

Yo gramps...that means the streets will be safer for the rest of us drivers...MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Take care my Monarch brother..and have a great new year.

  75. madeinhawaii:

    (J)J...
If you're driving.. I hope that means you aren't drinking. But do leave your number here just in case one of us needs a ride home.. ;-)

  76. SteveM:

    Good morning everyone!

"...pretending to work" -- can't fool us, ST! ;) The nature of your work has you working even when you are pretending not be working as you work. I'm waiting for my coffee.

Interesting comment about 10 years ago and computers on the internet. By then I had 150+ on the internet at my elementary school. But no telephones. A building shared one phone line. We discussed telephony over IP back then too. Most schools have phone systems now, but the advent of cell phones and consequent technologies is major.

ST -- ten years from now, you might write, "Back in 2009 at the old 'tiser when we had an physical office, we only had laptops and wireless modems...a few of us had iPhones/blackberry/etc. ...". :)

    Happy New Year!

This is a sad day for sports journalists in DC:
    http://washingtontimes.com/weblogs/redskins/2009/dec/31/closing-time/

  79. madeinhawaii:

10 years ago.. wasn't it still popular to PIP things via Modem to modem?

  80. LizKauai:

    http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/dec/28/first-down-16079013/
TWT FIVE REASONS YOUR NEWSPAPER NEEDS A SPORTS SECTION

    1. Real news is depressing -- Unless you consider the Redskins-Giants game last week worse than an economic collapse or an earthquake.

    2. It holds powerful people accountable -- When Jim Bowden shows up at spring training on a Segway, TWT photographers were there to document his stupidity.

    3. ESPN is powerful enough -- Good luck getting your fix of Capitals news from a network that doesn't care about hockey.

    4. Big events warrant big coverage -- It may seem like decades since the Redskins, Wizards or Caps won a title (OK, so it was), but the TWT sports department was there to chronicle it.

    5. It's funny -- Well, sometimes.

    HE SAID WHAT?

"It felt good to get booed like it used to be."

-- Kobe Bryant on the Lakers playing in Sacramento against an improved Kings team

  81. madeinhawaii:

In 1992 I bought my first modem in Japan. No one I talked to knew how to do a Modem to Modem transfer... never got to use it. Used Takyubin (express mail carriers) instead.

  82. LizKauai:

mih- thinking "decade". I automatically went back to the '90s , not the 2000's... uh oh.... WHERE DID THE YEARS GO???? I'M OLD!!!!

  83. madeinhawaii:

    sounds like you need dec-aide..

But it's easy to get confused...Nearly 10 years ago we went to war against Iraq... 10 years prior to that, we went to war with Iraq. Nearly 10 years ago we had a President named Bush... 10 years prior to that...we had a President named Bush.

The more things change.. the more things, remain the same... eh?

To the next decade to come... bring it on!! Okole maluna!

  84. wafan:

    Liz . . .

I was going to make a smart aleck comment but decided that would be dangerous -- for me. On the other hand, you might forget. But, knowing others on the blog they would remind you -- if they did not forget first. But, then, some would remember to put it on their calendars -- if they could remember what to write and where they put their calendars.

    . . . I forgot what I was going to say.

  85. madeinhawaii:

    Liz..

So sad about the Washington Times Sports Department...

  86. wafan:

Off to Costco for end of the year things.

Geez. I should have bought stock way back when.

  87. madeinhawaii:

    wafan?

    Chicken stock?
    Beef stock?
    Live stock?

Which reminds me... UH came up with a new water filter using lava, I believe, that eliminates all the bad stuff but allows all the good stuff to come through...works better than carbon, whatever happened to that?

  88. madeinhawaii:

    Wafan,

No worry about calendars... by the end of the next decade they will replace their computers and poof.. no more old calendars.

  89. madeinhawaii:

Today's bowl games are like slug fests... No team has an upper hand over the opponent. Stanford and Okie... 24-24... Navy and MO... 7-7.

  90. LizKauai:

There's something ironic about watching Navy in a bowl game and Hawaii not...
    One snap and clear.

That's it! We're not old... we just learned one snap and clear!
I feel so much better now.

Hey wafan... i bought Costco stock... not as good as Apple tho...

  91. Stephen Tsai:

    SteveM:
When I first started at the paper, in 1981, we could only make long-distance phone calls through the operator. But she didn't work on weekends. So we had to go into the managing editor's office to call our Neighbor Island correspondents for their high school polls.
One of our bosses, Mike Middlesworth, was in charge of buying us computers. Our first laptop was a Sony. The screen was a narrow strip, and you could only see one line of type. When Andy Yamaguchi covered the 1984 Olympics, he brought along a portable typewriter and that laptop. He'd write his stories on the typewriter, then punch them into the laptop.
Soon after, Radio Shack came out with laptops that had a screen that showed up to eight lines. One of our editors, Clyde, asked Middlesworth if we could use the laptops as a business expense. Middlesworth said no. So all of the sports writers — me, Dave Koga, Ferd Lewis, Bart Asato, Dennis Anderson, etc. — bought our own Radio Shack laptops. Since we couldn't get the writeoff, we didn't have to share our laptops with the rest of the newsroom.
Back in 1999, we had desktop computers that were obsolete. Know how you don't realize you're poor until somebody mentions it? Micah Kroeger's wife came into the sports department, and she said: "Stevie, your computer (type) is in green and white." Then she said, "Your computer doesn't have a mouse."
    We've come a long way.
The young'uns don't understand. But the old futs really appreciate what we have now.

  92. djmitcho:

And before I forget, Congratulations to HawaiianBod for winning the Blog Bowl Fantasy Football league. He beat the defending champ Jason in the championship game.

  93. madeinhawaii:

Standford Okie game getting out of hand.. the Sooners are really ticked off about a controversial call... penalities abound.. hee haw..

  94. jm2375:

Liz - can't believe that about the Wash Times. How can you have a newspaper without sports? But then again, I never read them since they were owned by Rev Moon and his band of crazies.

  95. Jason:

Stephen: I remember those old computers at the library!

djmitcho: Didn't I win by tiebreaker?

  96. Committed Road Warrior:

Still pondering whether to go out for New Year's Eve festivities. It's suppose to rain tonight and, to be honest, I'm having a hard time finding some cheap activities. That, and I'm tired.

    We'll see.

  97. A-House:

To all our Tsaiko family, near and far, we, the A-House family do wish you a safe and prosperous 2010.

May we experience good health and much happiness; especially with those whom we hold most dear to us.

Will we see another BCS invitation? Why not, we can all dream and I can notify our New Year's day family, Mrs A-House side, that we will again postpone our hale gathering cause we are going "bowling" - BCS style!!!!

  98. Committed Road Warrior:

    jm2375:

Unfortunate about the Washington Times doing away with the Sports section.....I can't see any paper without the Sports, but they're already down to 5-days-per-week distribution and are considering ending printing and going solely online if their financial position doesn't improve.

Your comments on post #94 resonate too.

  99. LizKauai:

    Ok. almost pau lunchowah.

Gotta give KUDOS to COACH MACK and Staff for preparing the Warriors for Navy.
All the kudos going to Navy for their "unstoppable offense" take note of their "worst game this year against Hawaii".

Looking forward that that kind of success next year!

A Safe New Year's Eve and Day to all of you. Saturn the Dog is cowering in his dog house because of the noise while the cats have all gone into closets and cupboards until tomorrow morning.

The Wahine basketball team is a winner no matter what the W-L record will be two-plus months from now. Congratulations for the coaching staff as well as the players for doing well.

BTW - the month of February is glorious for UH sports - men's & women's basketball, men's volleyball, softball & basebal plus track & field as well as all kinds of water sports.

Finally, the first round of 2010 legislative $$$$ briefings for UH and Aloha Stadium have been set, Perhaps someone from the Honolulu Advertiser's Sports Department might want to check them out to see what is probably going to happen there.

Again, be prepared for a huge bump in the General Excise Tax - or at least discussions about it.

ST -- re: your comment #91

... When Andy Yamaguchi covered the 1984 Olympics, he brought along a portable typewriter and that laptop. He'd write his stories on the typewriter, then punch them into the laptop.....

Yup--and I bet when the hardcopy or laptop made it back to the 'tiser building, it was re-typed again into a linotype press machine or similar :)

Another major change in typing for us "old futs"-- parents throughout the 1990's thought that keyboarding was important to their child's success. (I disagreed, preferring to teach manipulation/use of the apps). Today, look at young 'uns picking at the small keyboards of hand- held devices or typing into an iPhone with their two thumbs... :|

Somebody is going to startup a thumb-typing and picking proficiency institute someday.

    Jason..

You talking about those old computers with the big monitors but no graphical display.. or are you talking about the punch card computers in Keller? I remember when finding the passcode and IDs to run your codes on a higher priority was the difference between and A and a B... and how we loved making all that ascii art using someone else's account.

Looking at what the Navy offense is doing to the Missouri defense, I believe the Warriors defensive coaching staff is superb. Congratulations to Navy and Coaches Ken and Ivan! A very well executed game.

  110. Jason:

I'm talking about the computers with the green-ish screen, only a keyboard and no mouse (so everything was keyboard command).

I remember in preschool, my teacher would wake me up so I could play on the computer. Same type of computer, with 5.25" floppies. I thought playing Gizmos and Gadgets on a Mac in the 3rd grade was so amazing, compared to playing Carmen Sandiego with those 5.25" floppies.

  111. Jason:

Oh yeah, and I'm too young to know anything about those punch card computers in Keller that everyone likes to tell me about. :-D

  112. jm2375:

Geez, Jason, my original Mac is older than you. Bought for around $2K in Oct 1984 w/ no hard drive and a box of single-sided 3.5" disks was $50(?). I think the surge suppressor was pretty expensive too. That Mac is still somewhere in my house.

  119. Derek:

The thing that bites me is lying. Tiger Woods lied, Urban Meyer lied about his chest pains. Everybody lies. I've lied. Some lies more than others. We are all sinners and won't survive. So with this new year upon us, let's try to be honest and start the year right for a change. The good part about the new year is that we can start fresh and we can be hopeful and optimistic about the future. That is our nature, that things will get better. But, will it?

It's in the hands of the coaches and the players. As fans, our job is to support the program in any way we can. So, the recruits, the strength coaches, conditioning, off season workouts, spring practice, etc, etc. etc. Who steps up, and who wants it the most? Do the players stay healthy? Will the team be ready for USC for the opener? And on the road to Army and Colorado before coming home? Will they be 3-0 or 0-3 out of the gate? It's not too long before the end of August. Between now and then we can have a lot of discussion about the state of UH football. Two things are clear at this point: Wisconsin is a very, very good football team and should be in the top 20 in the final poll. Two, Navy is very good, 10 wins in a season is impressive. UH could have been good, but the team was inconsistent. The good, road blowout against Wash. St., home win against Utah State, complete game win against Navy. The bad, at Las Vegas which we should have won, at La Tech when we were winning at the half, bad loss against Fresno St. at home,
loss at Nevada when we were up 14-0. It could have been, but......
Have a Happy New Year and stay healthy!!!!!!

P.S. We still need a good kicker!

  120. A-House:

Loud booms resonate in our valley and it sounds like 81mm and 4.5 heavy mortar rounds or 105 artillery rounds, but this can not be so because it is New Years eve and the Marines have the day off.

Beside, Pres Obama is here and they would not dare train on this day or tomorrow.

Only exception is our military forces overseas in the Middle East where every day is a "combat day". To all of them, stay safe and keep the peace and come home soon.

  121. A-House:

Has Mercado given any hint where he is going? UH could use his leg as a kicker.

Figure that his research while a Junior in Florida, his desire to surf, his intent to show teams his capabilities, and Kahuku's need for a kicker brought him to the Islands. May as well stay for college!

    "What say you", Mercado-san?

  122. Mark:

I know exactly what you mean!

Hmm... I wonder if all the fireworks makes the President's security detail a little edgy? Is there a no fireworks ban around the Pres? Like 10 miles or so?

  124. el guapo:

A healthy and happy new year to all

  125. protector:

    Congrats to Jason!

Gotta hand it to Navy. Their 10th win today should make a statement to all doubters about how good they were this season. This is why UH's win over them should show some of the doubters how good UH can play when they're firing on all cylinders. Similarly, when they are not, you have games like the Boise State & Wisconsin losses. A few games were lost simply becasue we lacked a decent kicker (which I hope will be rectified in the off-season, pretty please).

Regarding the Wisconsin game, I'd like to know what anyone / everyone can do to assure that celebratory & familial ceremonies for Seniors are relegated to its rightful place at the END of the game. I don't feel that having families & relatives awaiting players with leis at the BEGINNING of the game and having all those bittersweet & nostalgiac emotions flooding through the players is conducive to having the right frame of mind when you're trying to get jacked against a motivated & prepared opponent. If this was the brainchild of the Stadium Authority or Jim Donovan, they should be shot! Sorry for the rant, but I honestly feel if someone doesn't speak up, that travesty will be repeated next year, too.

  126. Bulla:

    protector,

i agree regarding the pre game activities at the Wisconsin game... too much of a distraction, and i know where 'The Beast' goes to mentally prepare for battle is a very dark and ugly place.

you'd like this story, he was coming off an injury and missed three games. he's getting all nutz in the locker room before playing Eastern Washington, i mean they said he was going psychotic. one of the DB's bumped into him when he was in a frenzy, he turns around and starts screaming at this guy, grabs him and tries to stuff him in a locker. they had to pull him off of the guy and convince him that he was a team mate......long story short, 3 sacks and 4 tackles for loss later, he was awarded Big Sky Defensive Player of the week.....thought that funnier than heck. but i know what you mean about mental preparation....it is a battle zone out there, nothing less, it's either win or lose, live or die....very basic parameters.

so pre game activities, especially BIG games need to be carefully reviewed, and i think in hindsight, we could have done something else against Wisconsin.

  127. bighilofan2:

    Howzit Tsaikos everywhere.

still gotta alotta catching up to do on the blog. but i wanted to jump in and say this:

    Ryan Eastman.

Really pulling for you, big guy. work hard. play hard. be like your papa. one really good guy! and a Happy New Year to you and the Warriors!

  128. Bulla:

    Good luck to ALL WARRIORS

As a team, USC can be beat, but only as a team......the clock has already started......training, training, training.....there's no vacation only preparation....

    GO WARRIORS

but to all that are an encouragement to ryan, mahalo, mahalo, mahalo.....let us support all of the players so together we all march to victory.....IMUA LANAKILA

  129. bighilofan2:

Wanna wish all the Tsaikos a Happy and Prosperous 2010.

  130. chawan_cut:

    stay safe tonight!
watch out for the FOG not VOG rolling thru the streets (Fireworks + OG)

  131. protector:

    Bulla,

Thanks for sharing that story about the Beast; I luv it! And if everybody had been in the locker room (prior to the Wisconsin) doing a similar type of mental prep like your son, I seriously doubt the score would've been as disparate. I'm a realist & I'm not going to say UH would've won that game (that would be a disservice as to how prepared Wisconsin was)-I'm just saying the score would probably not have been a blow-out.

One more thing. I know some like it when the team does the haka / ha'a
before the game. I would much rather have them do it AFTER the game as it always seems to emotionally drain them (when done at the beginning). Also, I'd like them to do it at the end to reward those that stay 'til the very end of the games whether the team is winning or losing.

  132. al:

    happy new year to all!

    Thanks Al

Great thoughts! I'm so happy that Ryan is returning home! Doesn't have to be a star...the joy he brings is plenty. Bulla and Lynn...thanks for sharing such a wonderful young person with us!

Betty and I send our warmest feelings of caring and sharing with the rest of the ohana. It is a rare gift of sharing and loving that we have the privilege of sharing with the rest of the Tsaikos.

While the smiles and laughter of sharing time with friends have been premium, we also can't forget the wonderful contributions of our Tsaikos expats. I can think of Paoha Boy, TChahng, SojuNTaegu, 22Tokyo, Garett, MasaBoy, Wafan, and so many others who contribute to our world...forgive me for not naming everyone.

Good cheer, and steadfast faith and courage for the new year!

May peace be in your hearts!

I just had to jump on the ole WB to a share a VERY COOL New Year's tidbit that should make everybody from Hawaii very sentimental and proud. Sweetie and I were watching the Ball drop live on CNN tonight and they had a four song play-list being played over the whole of Times Square. You'll especially love the last tune they played.

Song # 1: "Imagine" John Lennon
Song # 2: "New York, New York " Frank Sinatra
Song # 3: "America the Beautiful" Ray Charles
Song # 4: " SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW" BRADDAH IZ!!!

One of Lori's close friends from high school works at Pearl Harbor now. Jennifer was using the gym that her work gives her access to and was shocked yesterday when Pres. Obama came to the gym for a workout! She said that he was very nice, shook her hand, made pleasant conversation while waiting his turn for a machine, and that the Secret Service being there was kind of weird to her.

Two things that surprised her the most:

    1. That the Secret Service didn't make everybody leave when the President went to the gym for his workout.

    2. That Pres. Obama waited patiently for his turn at a machine--he had done a set and she went to use the machine after him just so that she could work out on the machine after he used it. When she was in the middle of her set she realized that he was waiting to do another set at the machine and she was interrupting his workout. She apologized to him and offered to let him use the machine, but he told her not to worry and that she should finish up with the machine.

"I always dreamed of getting a scholarship and it came through," he said in a recent interview. "All the hard work paid off."

"When that (scholarship) call came through, it felt like a big relief," Lourdes Luna recalled. "I’m in the lending business, and things aren’t too hot right now."

She and her husband credit Prodigy Athletes – which opened in a Temecula commercial center last fall – with much of their son’s success on and off the field.

The 7,500-square-foot gym – which moved from Orange County and has trained more than 15,000 athletes over the years in its classes, camps and clinics – is located in a Temecula commercial area that flanks Madison Avenue.

"It’s really changed my son, all my sons," Lourdes Luna said. "They all go here. They learn how to be responsible for themselves as a student first and then as an athlete."

"It’s not always the most talented kids who get the scholarships," Lau said in an interview. "The (college) recruiters say: ‘How are his skills? How are his hips? How are his grades? Tell me about his parents. They want good kids who are coachable and are going to do the job in the classroom."

He described Luna as "an innocent kid" who is determined to work harder than anyone else on the field or in the gym.

"I tell these kids that they (colleges) don’t hand these scholarships to everyone. If you want to be different, you have to act different," Lau said. "Solid academics is what it takes. Football is the easy part. Kids don’t realize that."

It's a story about Marty, and i'll leave it at that.....but the gist of the book are the following 3 Life Lessons.....and I am going to try and remember them in the coming year.

    3 Life Lessons

    1) Relationships matter most
    2) Try to do a little more,
    3) Only YOU can make YOU happy.
