Satele enjoying opportunity

June 18th, 2010
By Stephen Tsai

Brashton Satele said he still marvels about being on the New York Jets' roster after not playing at all in 2009 because of a shoulder injury.

Satele, who signed as an undrafted free agent after his NCAA appeal for an extra year was denied, is listed behind All-Pro Bart Scott and fifth-year pro Lance Lowry at weakside linebacker. But Satele has received significant practice time on special teams and in dime situations.

"It's great here," said Satele, who has been invited  back for training camp, which begins July 31.

The Jets' mini-camp ended a couple of days ago, but Satele was encouraged to remain in the area for another three weeks to work out at the Jets' facilities.

I've been snoozing the past couple of months. Didn't realize that Maryknoll's Davis Holt was going to be playing volleyball for the Warriors.

HELP ACKNOWLEDGE THE 2010 RAINBOW WAHINE SOFTBALL TEAM!!!

In 2007 the reality of "extra" funding for UH's non-revenue sports programs was evident. As the 2007 UH Football team was able to afford WAC Championship/Sugar Bowl rings, the 2007 WAC champion and Super Regional team had no money for anything for the players to acknowledge their achievements. However, as a result of the "aloha" of many fans, that team was able to have something to keep for themselves to remember their experience by.

In the year 2010, that very same program took UH softball to new heights and gave us many memories. It is time for fans to respond again, if they are able to.

This is a drive to raise funds for the 2010 Wahine Softball team's bracelets acknowledging their Women's College World Series appearance.

The total cost will be $2645.83, that comes to 115.03 per bracelet which falls well within the NCAA regulated "gift" amount to each player set at a maximum of $300.00 per student athlete.

The timeline goal needed to raise the total amount is set for mid-August 2010.

Please make all checks or money orders out to:

“UH FOUNDATION” it is important that you write in the memo part of the check “Wahine Softball Bracelets” by doing so the money can only be spent for the purchase of the bracelets. All funds donated will be tax deductible and you will will receive that in the mail from the Foundation.

    Please mail all checks to:
    Na Wahine Bracelet Fund
    3633 Puuku Mauka Dr.
    Honolulu HI 96818

***PLEASE MAKE SURE THE NAME AND MAILING ADDRESS AT THE TOP LEFT CORNER OF YOUR CHECKS ARE CURRENT AND CORRECT. UH FOUNDATION USES THIS INFO TO SEND PEOPLE THEIR RECEIPTS FOR TAX DEDUCTIONS.***

In working directly with UH administrators and the UH foundation, this year's process will be smoother and the team will be able to receive their bracelets in a timely fashion.

If you have any questions please ask or email Pomai at pomai (at) tsai-kos.com.

MAHALO TO ALL OF THOSE THAT ARE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE.

  32. NorthShoreFan:

JJ...Mahalo for the link... it seemed to me that Texas was staying because of the situation they are now in. I hardly call them "cowards" but they do have a pretty good chance of being in the title chase every year now and with a decided advantage...does this trnaslate into more $'s? They got a ton of $'s so me thinks championships is all they care about now.

Media Guides...is there someplace one can buy one?....what about the boosters magazine too? Might be a good fundraiser item..

  33. NorthShoreFan:

North Texas may turn out to be another Boise...

  34. madeinhawaii:

Whoa.. mustn't forget.. Dillingham...Ala Wai...Ala Moana... Kamokila ...and Ka Uka Boulevards...

  35. madeinhawaii:

What the heck.. Boise gave the WAC 10 good years... if UH and Hawaii can't turn things around and put it's program in a more favorable light over the next 10 years... then it will have deserved whatever fate lays in store for it...

  36. madeinhawaii:

So yeah.. let's grab the North Texas schools... make a East Division - West Division WAC... 16 schools.. 12 with football.. 4 without.... make scheduling baseball, softball, and some of the other sports that much easier... gain a bigger recruiting footprint and TV market...and see where it takes us.

  37. Dan-O:

No news on Blaze? That's not a good sign.....

  38. Ralph:

Why so excited about having North Texas State:
2009 they were 2-10, averaging 18K fans per home game
2009 they were 1-11, averaging 16+K fans per home game

I don't see the value of NTS, how does adding a losing team a benefit downline to UH and the WAC who needs improved play against better competition. This extension of the WAC is a step back. We want other conferences asking UH to join, why would they if our wins are against teams like NTS, our fellow WAC teams who are struggling, Charleston Southern, Lamar, you name it, we got the low end of the RPI on our schedule.

  39. rage777:

The WAC should stick to its name, Western Athletic Conference. Not Midwest, not Central, West. Isn't that the reason why we don't want LaTech, because it's too far east? Texas will be fine for now, until we have to keep traveling over there and they have to keep traveling to Hawaii. Then the schools will complain that the travel costs are too high, the time difference is too much, etc. The WAC should have a rule that no team can be east of the Rockies.

  40. madeinhawaii:

    Ralph..
Nobody's going to ask Hawaii to the dance if they don't have a forum to show what they can do and what they have to offer. We need to look several years down the road. If the WAC doesn't rebuild/rebound, if it gets picked apart, Hawaii will be nowhere to be found. Expand now.. get the new teams real D1 status in a couple of years, expand the TV market and exposure. Get better recruits. Play a better OOC schedule to supplement the level of competition in the WAC. Develop a national marketing plan and be ready in a few years for the next big shuffle... BUT if the other conferences expand and go into a playoff calendar, the WAC will have to be ready to do the same or end up playing less games.

  41. GRM:

    Pomai,
Donated on line to UH Foundation, specifying for 2010 Wahine Softball.

  42. madeinhawaii:

    rage777

Which is why the WAC should expand and split into two halves.. East and West... The cross over will be less frequent and the travel distance lessened for most seasons. Scheduling of other sports will be made easier and save money there as well. If the WAC can expand with schools that at least have really good programs besides football it can build it's off-season persona which would help raise it's overall image. The WAC needs greater balance in all sports to gain respect. Ain't going to happen with what we got.. Got to grow, expand, improve or at least improve it's perceived value. All the while UH has to LEAD the way.. it has to rise to the top and not be simply a contender. It has to demonstrate value above and beyond that of being a laid back member.

    Pikchas?

About now it woulda been nice to have some VIDEO from the workouts...tsigh...

  44. d1島:

meant to say from the Big Man Camp....

  45. madeinhawaii:

    Ralph,

The N Texas student body just voted to up their student activity fee to $20 a credit. They are building a new stadium to house more fans which will be ready to open it's doors for the 2011 season.. being in D1, their fans will show up in huge numbers. If they were getting 16-18K from their 35K student body in the old stadium, you can expect that to easily double when they go to D1 with their new Stadium.

  46. GRM:

Opps! Sorry Kazz, vice Pomai RE: UH Wahine softball donation.

  47. BleedGreen808:

    Good afternoon everyone!

Speaking of big man's camp, I chatted with Coach Rolo and saw Coach Aranda after the big island camp.

    Coach Rolo--

If you read this blog, it was a pleasure to talk to you last night. Looking forward to seeing you on the practice field. Sorry, didn't recognize you at first but I somehow came around. haha. BTW, sorry for calling you by your first name. That was the first word that came out of mouth.

    GRM,

Please send an email to Pomai to let him know about your donation. Pomai is right that it will be hard to get information about who donated and the amount from the Foundation.

  51. greenthumb:

I know I'm asking a day late but it took a while to find the back door here. ;) Question, why does the BCS give a 25% bonus to smaller conferences? I'm referring to Garret's post from yesterday about why MWC would play the numbers game and *not* expand further, because it is in a stronger position by getting that 25%.

  52. madeinhawaii:

    d1

Didn't UH used to have a chant like? "Mean Green Fighting Machine" ?

  53. madeinhawaii:

The more I think about it.. the more I like this BleacherReport proposed setup for the WAC...

    Western Athletic division
    Hawaii
    San Jose State
    Fresno State
    Nevada
    Idaho
    Utah State
    Portland State (non-football member)
    Sacramento State (non-football member)

    Southern Athletic division
    New Mexico St.
    Texas St.
UTSA (University of Texas at San Antonio)
    UNT (University of Northern Texas)
    Lamar
    La. Tech
    Denver (non football member)
UNA (University of Northern Arizona - non football member)

I guess that would make us the WA-SA-(P) Conference.. ;-)

Seems, I still am in the category of "last to know" - sheez, I thought it was left behind when I left the Army!!!

  55. madeinhawaii:

    A-House...

Better Last to Know.. than "Need to know" and never find out, eh?

  56. A-House:

Yep, MIH, at least now I know there was a "back door" - man, some people just get the word very late - I vaugely recall a post about the back door, but I thought it was the door to one of whitey's darkside establishment!!

MIH" who da heck is "bleacherreport" - they in da WAC? they are better than Mel Kipper, right?

    CRW,

If North Texas is already Div I... better still!... add 'em already... Let's not waste time.. Act not react... .. Just looked into their conference.. and they are the only one I'd like to get..

I'd bet in a better conference their recruiting would go up as well as their attendance. Just as ours would if we were in the Pac10-16. ... Our revenues would shoot up incredulously. The stadium would be packed... Souvenirs would sell out... Food concessionaires would be big time donors of UH.

Ah.. to dream of being in the big dance...

But it's not too late.. can still make the next round if we build now.. and build wisely.. Build up the WAC, dominate it...and control our destiny.

  105. BG:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H4FRcZ6OUo "Go for Broke" song by Jake Shimabukuro.

If you haven't already heard it, this is a short video clip. I don't know why, but as he started to play, tears were rolling down my cheeks from the deep, intense feelings that Jake plays with. I'm more familiar with the traditional "Go for Broke" song sung by the battalion on special occassions. If you haven't had the opportunity to have experienced it, I can only describe it as major chicken skin...at least it is for me. The company from Samoa is the foundation of the beautiful harmony and strength. The rest of the battalion follows their lead and the end of the song is a rousing back and forth roar of "4-4-2", "Go for broke". All of the mainland commanders who are privileged to hear the 100th Battalion's performances have always favorably commented on the awesome event. No other unit in all branches of the military comes close...not even in the same zip code.

    Colt watch...

11:50—Another inconsistent day for Colt Brennan. First he completed a nice deep sideline pass to Thomas, who made a bobbling catch. But a little later on, he just couldn’t get the ball out of his hand on consecutive passes, drawing the ire of the coaches.

  111. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

Well, what happened to the numbers. All the posts are listed as zero.

Okay, I'll bite. What's the difference between NAU as in Northern Arizona University and UNA as in University of Northerm Arizona?

Some of these bigger states have so many four year colleges and universities thatmust be really difficult to follow their athletic programs without a media guide.

What time is the Parade of Champions Rally next Saturday. There's a HUGE event starting at noon sponsored by the Surfrider Foundation starting noon near the groin at the foot of Kapahulu and stretching out for several hundred feed in either direction along the beach. It should be finished by 1 pm.

Any idea when the HSA blog section will be activated. Trying to locate it through back door and side door entrance which are often blocked or locked is nutseo.

  112. madeinhawaii:

JD mentioned this at his last chat on SportsHawaii...

As a matter of fact, Mayor Mufi Hannemann has contacted us about honoring our baseball and softball teams at a June 26th Sunset on the Beach event that starts at 6:00 pm. In addition, the City and County of Honolulu will also recognize and acknowledge the HPU softball team for winning the Div II National Championship. I think it's great that the City and County of Honolulu is acknowledging the special success of these 3 teams! Hope everybody can make it.

  113. Stephen Tsai:

Yep, looks like we're back. Supposed to be better display. We'll see what happens. Scott M. is in charge of the design, I think.

  120. WATCH GODGIFU:

North Texas U claims to be the flagship of the Univ. Texas system. It has some 37,000 students (undergrads, graduate school, professional) and anticipates an enrollment of 45,000 in about 5-10 years.

Being just sort of north of Dallas, it would be easy to get to, gives UH (and the rest of the WAC) a more favorable recruiting base in Texas.

Hope our WAC Commissioner goes after them pronto.

  121. psp game downloads:

I don't think it really has anything to do with the memory sticks or the reader itself because when the USB is plugged in the sticks, reader and unit seems to work just as it should but when it is unplugged the issue is again apparent.

  122. wafan:

    Hey! Numbers!!!

    Whoo-hoo!

  123. wafan:

And just like that they are gone.

  124. wafan:

    psp . . .

Then the solution is simple . . . leave the USB plugged it (and disable your keyboard).

  125. Shoko:

North Texas is a good school with a great TV market, but their football program is....

one game better than Western Kentucky. Yep, WK that had a perfect defeated season last year. But they have a great TV market. Oh, said that already.

    Carry on...
