Mouse boosts mentoring program

The hiring of Mouse Davis is in line with the Warriors' pairing of coaches with different experience levels.
Davis, who has been head coach in four different professional leagues, will serve as mentor to Nick Rolovich, who begins his first season as offensive coordinator. Head coach Greg McMackin, with more than 40 years of coaching experience, is mentoring Dave Aranda, a first-year defensive coordinator. Cal Lee, who will coach the defensive ends, will be able to help Tony Tuioti, who will coach the defensive tackles after two years as director of player personnel. Gordy Shaw and Brian Smith have complemented each other in directing the running game.

Maybe with Rolo in the booth, the offense will spread the field vertically more this year like they did in the WSU game last year....and like Michigan Warrior stated, more wins will validate the idea of pairing different experience level coaches. The proof will be on the playing field and the number of Ws and competitiveness of the teams in any Ls.

azngamer808 was practicing place kicks at Aiea High School field a few years ago.
I think it was Tom McCarthy that was also on the field playing with his young child.
He later walked over and gave Nicholas some pointers, like tilting the ball slightly towards the wind to help with accuracy. Did he play for the Kansas City Chiefs as a punter? I forgot who the place kicker was that he held the ball for.
Tom still could boom his punts.

I'm surprised that it's Rolo in the booth and not Mouse... but I suppose Rolo needs a year or two up there to augment and enhance his field vision. Maybe they'll switch later in the season or next season. Is the booth airconditioned?

Interesting mentoring program for the coaching staff. This is good for developing UH's young coaches. I hope that if things work out for their development that the coaches don't leave UH for 2x or more of their salary from some school with a bigger budget for assistants (UH lost Mack and Cav even before SEC and other schools starting escalating assistant coaching salaries).

The NCAA is looking at eliminating early scholarship offers. Schools would still be able to offer recruits during the summer before their senior year (which is when the majority of early offers happen) but you wouldn't see 13-year-olds getting offers anymore.

Rolo in the booth is interesting and probably will help him see the field better. That should hopefully help with play calling and adjustments.
With Mouse on the sidelines, I guess that means that he will be discussing things with the QBs, passing info back to Rolo, and be responsible for making adjustments with the WRs. Mouse obviously knows the offense well so he is qualified for all of those things.

This El Paso Times article describes how C-USA was worried about getting raided, similar to how the WAC was worried until things calmed down. It sounds like there may be 5 years for schools to upgrade their football teams before the next expansion round starts.

I expect all the BCS conferences to expand to 12 and 16 teams and have their own championship games prior to the big bowls and ultimately rewriting the BCS rule book again. If Hawaii doesn't get in on the next round, our program may not survive.

So who's mentoring Mack, the head coach. That's why I say that Dick Tomey should be brought in to mentor Coach Mack. If anyone doesn't think that Dick Tomey can't coach wide receivers really doesn't know too much about football. Of course Dick Tomey can coach wide receivers. Most coaches of his caliber can coach any and every position on the field. He did a remarkable job when he came to Austin to coach with coach Mack Brown.

Just found out that one of my 450 coworkers with my same IP address led to all of us being banned from posting to the website. Never mind that this was the Star Bulletin website and that neither me nor my 450 coworkers with my same IP address have EVER posted to the Star Advertiser comments section on the website.
EVER.
Yet we are all banned. Muffled. Silenced. Shut down.
I hate the Star Advertiser website. This is an outrage. This is unfair.

It's not a registration or application fee - it's an activity fee with most of the funding going towards the athletic department to: 1) reduce the deficit over the next five years and 2) underwrite the operating costs in the current fiscal year - whenever the fee is actually collected.
The fee has not been approved by the Board of Regents yet. If and when it is, it will go into effect the following semester.
The fee is not on next Monday's Board of Regents meeting agenda; however, it probably will be on the July 15th or August 30th agenda. The earliest it would kick in would be Spring Semester 2011.

The Former Coach was unique in his ability to see the action from field level and act as his own OC.
It would be interesting if the guy from Waialua ever gets a HC post. Would he come down to field level? He must be really comfortable upstairs after all these years.
Recall that the ex-ND HC went upstairs to call the shots in the Hawaii Bowl...that worked out pretty good for him!

Shoko - No it's a permanent fee - no "sunset" date on it. However, it could be rescinded by folks wanted to do so going through the same set of steps being done for the implementation process.
The fee should be permanent, but I would like to see it be split into providing free or reduced prices for more activities (theatrical productions, concerts, lectures,etc.) than just sports once the deficit has been eliminated.
I do not know of a single public FBS school - formerly known as D-1A - which does not have such a fee. I know that back in the Early Stone Ages when I was an undergrad at the University of Washington, I paid a student feet. Later as a grad student at UCLA, I paid a similar fee which included student tickets at all USC crosstown games in every sport. Have no idea if that perk still is around.

USC filed its appeal regarding the NCAA's penalties. It will be interesting to see if the NCAA can succeed in enforcing its penalties or if USC's lawyers and consultants will win out.

On the surface, the $2 million obtained from the student fee would be a good match for the $2 million deficit that the Athletic Department has. However, $100k of the fee will go for student concerts and other benefits, and the fee will increase the cost of every scholarship the Athletic Department gets. So, JD will have to increase revenue or cut costs further to get the budget balanced. With reduced money coming from the WAC, UH is even further in the hole financially.
When you think about it, the net effect of the student athletics fee will be *less* money for the Athletic Department, not more. UH was running a consistent $2 million deficit, which indicates that maybe the University needed to increase their funding of the Athletic Department by $2 million. Instead, *all* of the proceeds from the student fee will go towards deficit reduction...that means that Upper Campus gets *all* net earnings from the student athletics fee. The students get $100k in extra benefits and Upper Campus gets the rest. The Athletic Department will also have to spend more on scholarships.
If the Athletics fee had been increased so that the Athletic Department would get some of the money, then maybe the recruiting budgets, coaching salaries, and facilities could be upgraded to make UH more competitive. Instead, UH will have to cut its Athletic Department spending even more to make up for the increased scholarship costs.
This is just some food for thought when celebrating the Athletics Fee. For those who think that the Athletics Fee will help UH's performance on the field, we should note that *none* of the money from the Athletics Fee is actually going to the Athletic Department. Upper Campus will get more money and the Athletic Department will have *less*.

A cynical way to look at the Athletics Fee would be to consider that UH was being squeezed by its budget situation so it used the popularity of the Athletic Department to get an extra $2 million for the University. If UH tried to raise tuition to get that money, people would complain. However, if they called it an Athletics Fee, lots of people would support it. Upper Campus gets the money either way, but this way the protests are not as significant.
Anyway, just trying to look at things from a different perspective...

Speaking of scholarships, I read a story about Fresno State falling short on their ability to pay for the increased cost of scholarships. It was mentioned, if they can't acquire enough booster donations, they would be forced to dip into their sports endowment; an option they consider as a last resort. In these tough economic times every schools is struggling to remaim solvent.

To put the student fee issue into perspective, while not exactly the same, the student activities fee included in my MPI tuition bill is $315. I believe it includes admission to games, field trip costs and probably covers part of the production costs for plays, concerts, etc.

Me too regarding Boise game tickets. I think they were $50 or around there when we went up a couple years ago.
I used to (and still do) laugh about the cost for the Utah State tickets. Still haven't been to Logan yet, but if it's like any typical USU home game you can probably buy $10 general admission tickets the day of the game (much like the NMSU game too).

If they can sell out their stadium with high ticket prices, why shouldn't BSU charge that amount? That money can be used for a lot of other things to upgrade their Athletic Department.
If UH was selling out Aloha Stadium every game, I'd hope that they would increase ticket prices. You already saw an example of this when JD got approval to charge extra for the USC game to start the season.

You're right. That is alot of $. I think that $20 million did not apply due to an adultery clause. Must be something in the pre-nup that permits her to get more than 50% if adultery is involved. I hear Tiger's tight with his $ so he probably didn't have a choice on it.
Elin had alot of incentive to take the divorce. If she wanted to stay with Tiger, she could divorce him, grab the money, and get back together again. Then again, Tiger would give her a hard time about the money.
As bad as Tiger behaved, the settlement doesn't seem very fair to me. I'm sure Tiger will pay closer attention to the fine print next time. That sure is alot of $...probably all after-tax $ too.

Well ya'all have a lot of mentoring goin' on down there in Honolulu. I'm glad that we here in austin don't allow any mentoring goin' on on the coaching staff. We do pay our coaches a lot more here in Austin than you do. When Mack Brown hires coaches, they need to hit the ground runnin'. We don't have time to hire guys that need mentoring.

I agree that there is alot of mentoring goin on here and yes I would hope with the money that Texas makes, that there would be no need to mentor due to the fact that you have the money to pay the experience coaches what they ask for. If Hawaii had the type of money that Texas has, I would hope that all this mentoring stuff would be a thing of the past but we don't so we have mentor the young coaches and hope they are diamonds in the ruff.

Yep. It's gotten up to 100 degrees the past couple days, which when factored with the humidity is making things rather uncomfortable. Today got up to 90, which is a "relief" compared to earlier in the week.
I went to the Nationals baseball game on Wednesday afternoon and roasted. It was 96 degrees at first pitch and my seats were in the sun the entire game. Even worse was the final score...1-0 Royals.

I have watched your teams play from the Cougars in Hawaii Kai to the Saints in Kalaepohaku, and have enjoyed every single play. Hopefully you continue coaching either here or on the mainland. Mouse can mentor but can he recruit. Mack's approach to staff building is way different from the basketball coach. Arnold's priority is finding guys with some " ins " somewhere. The first hire has connections with South America and Europe. The second has connections in Chicago and the midwest. His latest hire is a bigshot in Aussie BB. Arnold's strong point to date is his own ability to recruit.
In the end it's the quality of your recruits that determines the success of your program. I really thought Mack needed a "high energy" guy that could hit the road and bring in some players. The current staff, aside from Aranda, is too low key...in my opinion.

Unfortunately I gotta agree with your comments. Deep down I was hoping for a younger coach to be chosen. One with drive and connections. I think hiring Mouse could be good for our offense but as you stated, what will he do inregards to recruiting. If what Mack says about recruiting is true then we need people that are relentless recruiters that can bring in the talent. I just don't think that Mouse has the drive to be a relentless recruiter. To me, this hire is probably a two to three year quick fix. I see no future for Mouse after that and unfortunately I am starting to think that there will be no future for Mack after that also. Please Mack prove me wrong.

Unless Mouse is buying a house here, I'd think he was here for the short term, meaning one or two seasons, and I think that's fine. Hopefully that will be enough time for Rolo, Lelie, Rivers, and Funaki to pick his brains and carry what they learn forward. Leilie only needs a year to finish his degree, so maybe he'll stick around after as a graduate assistant. Same with Rivers. Currently we have "youth" in Rolo, Aranda, Smith, Tuioti, Biesemeyer, and Funaki.

I think Mouse is a great addition to sharpen our r&s. We definitely need to get back to aggressively attacking the defense and scoring points in bunches. But you're both right, we also need to significantly bolster our recruiting prowress big time. We need coaches who are workaholics and can recruit. Gib's da man, just tell him that he's also responsible for football recruiting.

Great to have Lelie and Rivers around. What I'd really like to see is the offense given another coaching position. I would give that position to Inoke as a QB coach. I know Garret feels otherwise. But I feel we've got to develop that backup for Rolo. You never know what the future holds. When Mouse retires, I would bring in Lelie, Rivers, or Stuzman as the receivers coach.

The reason why it is hard to have mentors for too many members of the coaching staff is that every college is limited to the same number of coaches. So, if some coaches are devoting their time to mentoring other coaches, then that time isn't being used to recruit and focus on the position that they are responsible for developing.

The thing is that Inoke *is* a member of the coaching staff as a GA. He is *not* restricted in coaching players during games or practices.
So, I always thought that Inoke was the *perfect* choice for GA because he can help with both QBs and RBs. I said this on the day that his hiring was announced and posted months before he was hired that UH should hire him to be a GA. Since his most experience was at QB and he had experience working with JJ, Dan Morrison, and Rolo, plus he got a close-up view of everything that Colt went through on and off the field.
So, I do *not* disagree with you. I think that Inoke will use these 2 years to help the QBs. I think that the character and leadership that Inoke showed during his Warrior career indicates that he will be an EXCELLENT coach. Even better, as a GA he is basically working for UH for almost free. He gets a graduate degree (which will help his coaching career and personal development) and UH will get 2 years of his service for almost nothing. After his 2 GA years, Inoke will be ready for an assistant coaching spot.
I also agree with you that after Mouse leaves that Stutzmann, Lelie, or Rivers could be good candidates to replace him at the WR coach spot.

I agree with everything you said in your 7pm post (I don't know what post number that is). As a GA, Inoke is an excellent choice to assist the QB coach--and Rolo can use the help since he's taking on the OC role and UH has 7 scholarship QBs.
Inoke can empathize with the frustrations of the backup QBs who wish to play. He set the best possible example of a team player accepting a backup role. He also can point to how he waited for his chance for so long and then led the team to a huge upset at Fresno State.

gib needs a good showing this year. he's got a lot of good recruits that believed in him(for a first time head coach). i believe he can do it. to keep those types of recruits coming, they'll have to put it all together on the court and make it happen. that'll make the new recruits want to come here and play for him and for us.

Tsaiko Nation, the game vs. USC is HUGE and in order to pull off the BIGGEST upset in Hawaii football history THREE things has to happen !
1. You must control the ball offensively and use the clock. Have long drives with your precesion passing game. Have to run the ball as USC D-line is MASSIVE and they know you are primary a passing team so mixing it up will hopefully keep them off balance BUT they are fast and quick with recovery time to the ball as they tackle the ball carriers and attempt to strip the ball so UH offensive players must protect the ball after the run or catch. NO TURNOVERS !
2. Keep USC offense off the field and don't let them get the "BIG PLAY" as Kiffin is a "blow out" coaching nightmare and he is looking to make a statement as the first year coach for the Trojans and running up the score he will have no shame and won't let up on the gas pedal as he is cocky and spreading that attitude to his players he is relentless ! If the Warriors can get USC to lose their composure it will help as Kiffin will pull players out of the game IF he sees stupid penalties that will cost USC field position and drives BUT remember the player coming out is being replace by another STUD as USC is loaded with talented players !
3. DEFENSE as the Warriors must maintain USC high octaine offense as they can run and pass with the most talented of backs and receivers West of Mississippi with a HUGE offensive line that average in size of 6"5" in height and over 300 lbs. Quaterback Matt Barkley is being prized for the Hesman Trophy as he is TOUGH as a sophomore quaterback with a cannon of an arm that can throw all the passes as the Warriors D-line has to get after him but maintain their positions as Gable and the running crew by committe can run inside or outside the tacklers and have break away speed to turn a close game into a blow out as they are that explosive to put up points on every down !
Overall it will be a highly charge game and the Warriors must play smart, error free ball as Moniz and Salas has to have BIG games with your DEFENSE playing smart tough nose secure tackling football. IMPOSSIBLE NO, IMPROBABLE YES as it will be the GREATEST upset this college football season IF you knock off the men of Troy as I will be rooting for you BUT will have to turn it off if 28 to 0 after the first quarter as I just can't watch UH being blown out as it hurts my competitive pride that I have for you !

Tony Davis from the 1959-60 team that beat OSU 56-51 as Klum gym was the
place for the Rainbow Warriors as my field work advisor Al Saake was the Coach.
Alvin Saake had a GREAT basketball mind as I enjoy sitting in his office as he told
stories of his experience with Bob Knight, Pete Newell, James Naismith and Pistol
Pete Maravich as Coach Saake had a TREMENDOUS mind for the roundball and put
Hawaii basketball on the map !
During that time and mines you would of have to play two games against the opponents as OSU won the re-match 72-46 but back then there was no conference as military teams were on the schedule, Seattle University, Lewis & Clark, Santa Clara, Westmont, LMU, USC, Denver, Portland, UCSB and Washington as the Far West Classic Tournament was the premiere basketball tournament on the West Coast during that period and 1959-60 Mr. A House was your TIME as I was just three years of age ! (smile)

Tony Davis during Mr. A House Time was a "STUD" as in two seasons of being the MAN on the team he average 19 points a game, led the team in scoring and played in all 36 games
with a sweet low post game. Tough defender and rebounder who will get that ball out for some fast break basketball as Coach Saake love transition basketball !
What was interesting during that time you had a lightning quick guard by the name of Norman Ching as he was one "fast bugga" who would be the recipient of Mr. Davis outlet
pass and turn those canvas converse that he was wearing into after burners as his speed for lay-ups brought Hawaii fans to their feet as Mr. A House can attest !

Al: Tony Wells was during my time as he transfered from Dayton University and played two seasons from 77-78 / 78-79. A good low post player that was really a forward but we had no true Center so Tony had to man the middle and he did it with adroitness and competence !
Good face up game and can fill the lane as he liked to run the floor and be on the receiving end when we would hit him in stride for that driving lay-up !
Very "PHYSICAL" player as he killed our other post players during practice as Brad Pineau, Brian Austin, Antoine Goodlow and Kevin Johnson felt his presence down load !
Played in the Aloha Classic and did well against the Nation Top Talent as still today I don't know why the Aloha Classic was dismiss ?

Ralph: from the Hawaii record books Mr. Ching was a UH Rainbow Warrior from 58-59 / 62-63 with 78 games being played and scoring 558 points during his career. Played with Tony Davis and was a member of that 9-18 squad that upset #3 rank Oregon State at Klum Gym my favorite hoop gymnasium of all time !

The reason why i'm asking is that our football equipment manager at Fresno Cty College, during the 1980's, was a local boy from Hawaii named Norman Ching. He had been there for years. Nice guy, loved and respected by everyone.

Is the head coach questioning the abilities of his OC and DC? First he says. "Okay I believe in you, now I want you to manage my offense." "But hey wait, you're kind of new at this so you know what, I'm going to bring in someone to mentor you." "He was a great head coach when your dad was in college. Even though the game of football changes every year, I'm pretty sure some of the principles that you learn will be helpful."
"But remember, in front of the players you're the boss, so be confident, act like the boss. Pretend that the offense is yours, all yours."
I was hoping that Rolo would have a chance to express himself this year. Put in his own wrinkles and create his own system. Without looking over his shoulder. Don't get me wrong, I think the marriage will work, because they have to make it work. But I just feel that an opportunity was lost. We could have brought in a great L.A. City/San Diego area recruiter who can also coach wide receivers.

I think that Mouse Davis was a good hire because he's Mouse Davis...his expertise with the offense is unique and he should be able to help with the offense.
It would have been nice to help with the recruiting side--a lot of coaching staffs (like UH basketball and most D-IA football staffs) are constructed based on the recruiting impact of each coach. Many coaches who are top recruiters get hired first and then they figure out which position they will be assigned to later. But UH seems to focus on *coaching* as the sole consideration for coaching hires instead of recruiting. Maybe Mack doesn't want the recruiting dynamos like Reinebold who would dig up players in Texas and elsewhere that UH may not normally have on their recruiting radar.
Aside from the hiring of Mouse, 2 of UH's recent coaching decisions have seemed to help recruiting. Moving Tony Tuioti to a coaching position lets him recruit in Vegas and other areas (though it takes away Lumpkin's visits to SoCal) and Tormey seems to have opened up a pipeline to recruits in Washington.

The timing of this press conference does answer one question that I had--it appears that Mack and UH are not part of JJ's Samoa mission this year since it is going on right now and Mack is obviously not there. That is sad to me, as they will do a great job in helping Samoa with medical supplies and treatment and with other major donations...I'd love to have had UH involved with that. It also would be nice for UH recruiting.
I know that it was suggested that UH could go to Samoa on their own. However, UH has limited funds and it was great how in past years JJ's Foundation covered all the expenses for UH to send half their coaching staff to Samoa.

oldie: Same has happened to me on my iPod touch for a while now. Sometimes it loads the mobile version, but it usually loads the regular Web version. I too prefer the mobile version when using my iPod touch; if Scott eventually sets up each blog with the same infrastructure (including URL), that he also set them up so they have a strictly mobile-based Web page with its own direct URL.

I agree. It would be great if Scott sets up a separate URL for mobile. I know there are other sites that do that. Sometimes I prefer the regular site, sometimes the mobile one.

My understanding of the birth statistics in many EU countries is that it only includes "live births" and doesn't factor in terminated pregnancies...
...I wonder how many of the "celebratory" pregnancies will actually factor in to the hoped for bump in birth rate?

d1 - what you're talking about is the pregnancy rate, which is different from the birth rate. Birth rate is generally defined as # births per 1000 population. Pregnancy rate is # pregnancies per 1000 population.

What's of concern to Germany, like other W. European countries is the birthrate. Among other things, easier access to contraceptives and more liberal attitudes to abortion have dropped their birthrates to unsustainable levels. Throw in easier migration since the EU and Germany will not look very "German" soon.

That was one of the topics my German exchange students always talked about. But, they also think it has to do with higher education, lowered economy, women marrying later in life, folks not wanting to put the time in to raise kids, a questionable future for their kids, wanting to enjoy themselves first (travel, materials, etc.), among other things.

RainbowCliff, just caught up on my reading, and wanted to say that you are a great supporter of your school and a very good human being. I respect your comment about not posting specifics, so hopefully it is still okay to say that yes, Hawaii is very far away (geographically and lots of other ways) ... but it could be the right place for a new future for teenagers. Isn't it beautiful about how sports can be about so much more than just today's game?
Now, on a louder sporting note: Want your very own vuvuzela -- there's an app for that! Seriously. And it's dog-approved, at least by our dog. Wonder how it would sound at BB games?
