"Game-Plan Tuesday"

September 21st, 2010
By Stephen Tsai

With the Thursday start to the season and the consecutive road games, it is difficult to figure out the correct day. But now, with a home game on a Saturday, "Game Plan Tuesday" — when UH installs, well, its game plan — is actually on a Tuesday.

Here's what happened today:

• Matagisila Lefiti resumed practicing today. While he is "football ready," according to the coaches, he still is not 100 percent "game ready." He is expected to play against Charleston Southern, but Bronson Tiwanak will make his fourth consecutive start.

• It appears, for now, Paipai Falemalu and Elliott Purcell are the No. 1 defensive ends. That could change, of course.

• Aaron Brown, George Daily-Lyles and Corey Paredes will be the starting linebackers.

• John Hardy-Tuliau and Lewis Walker are competing for the job as No. 1 nickelback.

* * * * *

Spencer Smith said it will be five more weeks before he's back. (The cast comes off in three weeks.):

Happy birthday to Aaron (Ronnie's son) and to Jim Donovan (Hawaii's son).

    Good Morning Tsai-kos!

  3. CoolEthan:

    When does Charleston Southern arrive?

  4. Buffoman:

    Top 5!?!

  5. Buffoman:

To the folks on the 5-0 review. The angst about not having a Hawaii star misses the point: it has, it's Hawaii. Those other actors are like the folks in CSI- Miami, NY, etc. They're not born and raised in those places.

If the series stays for years and keeps jobs for those folks behind the camera and every once in a while we get a cameo from a local born actor, great. The star is still Hawaii. What would we be saying if it was in Oregon...nothing, we'd have no star. I for one am just happy we get to see Hawaii and can laugh that the conversation about being at Pipeline really was not at that beach or say that they're drive from Hawaii Kai to Kailua and show Aiea, so what, it's still in Hawaii.

  6. Cheyah!:

They should have open competition for the whole defense. Let the best man win! Glad to hear that Lefiti is fully recovered!

    Go Warriors!

  7. CoolEthan:

    Spot on Buffo-
Can't have the cake and eat it too.

  12. Slugger:

    Good morning!!!

Won't be able to make it to practice this morning. Dang!

  13. Kekoa (iPhone):

Buffoman ~ Are you upset cause a nevah wen give you one cameo role? Haha..Hey! Lighten up, just having some fun here.

Ok let's get back to football and that elusive 56-14 win over Chuck U.

  14. TYaiea:

Yeah, you're right Buffoman...Hawaii is the star of this series. Had to chuckle though, when they had that aerial shot of steve and danno driving through Waimanalo area and looked like they were passing by campsites...it was actually homeless people living in the area. Imua Warriors.

  15. Hank:

...the Defensive changes is good news...GO WARRIORS...

  16. Coach MacAppen:

  19. Buffoman:

    Kekoa,

Nay, too ugly, da camera would broke, but you right, back to the issue at hand...UH football.

Again, I worry that we would be gauge success in being able to beat teams we're supposed to beat. Consistency is needed.

Me, I'm a Moniz guy. Yes he's made mistakes, but his comfort in leadership shows and that's what the "O" needs to put up scores. O-line needs to sharpen it's game. Thought we did great work in the opener and was going to constantly improve. Seems stuck in neutral at the moment as the run blocking has not been as sharp and the tackles (#51 esp) has begun to have speed rush problems off the edge.

  20. bb:

I'm just wondering if this came will become a "one seat rule" game. There are some games (unfortunately few and far between) that me and my friends can have a seat or even a row between us. You know, at the theater you can't sit right next to your guy friends when the theater is pretty empty. That just isn't cool. Of course if you are on a date the one seat rule does not apply.

I'm wondering if this is one of those games. Nothing like having extra space when some of your friends are over 350 lbs.

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

Buffoman - numba 5 (oh) - right on. Give the producers/casting people time. They'll find some locals. At least they're using two of my favorite Asian actors and Kelly Hu is scheduled to make an appearance soon. Now how about Tia Carrere, Jason Scott Lee, Kelly Preston, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.

BTW, the whole industry does the "go down one street and end up somewhere not even close". If anyone's ever seen the original "Exorcist" movie, the stairs are not right outside the house. IIRC, they're about a block apart. Those stairs are legendary among Georgetown students. Many a keg have been dropped on those stairs. The movie "No Way Out" (Kevin Costner) featured the Baltimore subway system as a stand-in for the DC Metrorail.

    *back to regularly scheduled programming*

  24. Michigan Warrior:

Just put our best guys out there, show us some hustle, and we'll go from there.

  25. RupertDaStupert:

I was a critic of Alex O'laughlan cast as McGarrett. I am sold on him after last night. I see the charisma in him. I feel he will grow on us. Ditto Scott Caan. I can see the magic partnership between McGarrett and Danno like James Spader and William Shatner on the balcony scene on Boston Legal. They're not local but so what? Jack Lord wasn't local but he loved Hawaii and retired here. Dick Tomey wasn't local but he loved Hawaii and retired here. Aku Head Pupule wasn't from Hawaii but he loved it and lived here till the day he died. Frank
Fasi wasn't from here but he loved and embraced it and lived and died here. Neil Abercrombie isn't a local and Linda Lingle isn't a local and need I go on? It's the love they show for Hawaii that counts. Lot's of the athletes that play for the UH aren't from here but they bleed green.

  26. expat:

I finally had a chance to watch the full game off the Tivo last night. It is amazing how just a few plays over the course of an entire game can change everything -- one missed third down stop, a blown coverage on a broken play, and random deflected pass... etc. The final score was not really very indicative of the game, and despite the score and frustration over losing a really winnable game I thought the guys played pretty well.

I think that there are two big issues that have to be dealt with --

The red-one offense has had problems, but there should be a different name for the offense you run when you have first and goal inside the five. That is like the "ultra-red zone" or something like that. You can't come away without any points when you are that close.

Holding and other penalties on kick returns. The special teams has to get better with discipline. Even if you are losing your block it is better to let the guy through to make the tackle than it is to pick up the holding penalty because those just pin the offense back on their ears. There were some major problems with dumb penalties on kicks and kick returns last year and they have been better this year -- but a poor special team play after another team scores can really kill a team (unless that team is Colorado and you fumble a kick receive to Hawaii, in which case you might be okay.)

A-House mentioned how the coaches will say that they will run more (and then they don't) or that they will rotate players more (and then they don't). I am surprised to see Moniz running back each play to chat with Rolo. I thought that they were going to work more on signaling stuff in. I can see the value of course, but at the same time your QB is running an extra twenty-thirty yards after each play and it slows down the flow and gives the D some time to set.

  27. NYUH:

I missed 5-0 last night. I mean really, who even checks a network channel?

    Ouch, this one stings.

C'mon Warriors. Rise to the challenge. Last week was last week. Learn from it. Correct the mistakes. Improve. Play hard. Play to win. Play like champions. No excuses. Just do it.

On a lighter note since everyone is talking about Hawaii 5-0, I'll help chawan out by posting this link to vote for the UH Band in the Hawaii 5-0 contest:

  34. RupertDaStupert:

I don't believe McMackan is a Von Appen. Or the coaches aren't doing their jobs. When the genius left, we just got spoiled into thinking success would continue. There is only one Johnny Unitas, there is only one Vince Lombardi. Just like I thought there would not be another Timmy Chang when he left, along came Colt. Just like I thought no one can replace Jack Lord as McGarrett, along came O'Laughlan. My perception changed last night. I see the charisma in Alex, something that money can't buy. You can't replace a Vince Lombardi but you can come close. Moniz doesn't have an accurate arm but I think he will perform with grace and dignity. So do the rest of the players. Too many talent on the coaching staff to call them "the three stooges". I believe in magic,, I believe in charisma. I believe in Alex O'Laughlan and Scott Caan. Macko will do just fine. I believe!

    Good Morning Gangeez! :)

Tsai, maybe it will help to think of senior Tuesday and $4 ticket prices.

    Hey JJ! Howzit Pomai!

  37. Pomai:

    Morin DPK!!!

  38. A-House:

a special MAHALO to Don Weir for his work in getting the word out to all former UH players that the Letter Winners Club and UHAD is very much interested in reconnecting with them.

same MAHALO to Rainbow Cliff and his dedication in putting UH in front of parents and student athletes who may be interested in playing for Hawaii.

Ground work is being laid and hopefully this will continue in the many years to come and bear fruit at some point in the future!

    Good job, gentlemen!!!!!!!!!

speaking of which I met Murray Cassidy and his wife Pam at Colorado and hope to meet up with them again in Seattle next year at the Udub game. Murray and his fellow football players were introduced to the UHAA tailgate participants.

  39. Da Punchbowl Kid:

I liked the new Hawaii 5-0!

They have some of the best writers around in Orci and Kurtzman. The stars were great, too, but we need some more local action. Some one who is brown skinned, athletic, funny and a man's man.

    Homey, your agent called.

  40. CoolEthan:

Several other schools that has UH backed into the corner regarding the marching band Five-O theme.

Notre Dame is leading with sound, Idea, and choreography

  41. homey ℞:

Nice to see waves on the North Shore!!!

Kazz! You bringing your softball gear to the t-gate this Saturday? Good time and location for the oldies like me to hit some batting practice. I'm sure BG and koakane would be game. And maybe the A-House gang too!

    Oh, and GO WARRIORS!

Another oh, Dancing With the Stars and Hawaii 5-0 on a Monday night...Yeah babee!

Someone feed Kono some spam, portuguese sausage, and soft gau gee min. BTW, her stunt double surfs awesome!

  42. tom mui:

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Hawaii 5-0, a bit edgy but I liked it.
It brings $$$ to our State and the scenery is nice which makes HVB (or whatever it is called now) happy.

Hawaii is a matter of heart - not a birthplace.

Wonder if Brooke Lee has any acting experience?

  43. homey ℞:

DPK - Would love to have a bit part on 5-0! I'm thinking I could be a lifeguard that saves kono after she wipes out and give her extended mouth to mouth resuscitation and a few chest compressions... LOL!!!!

  44. empty:

Just wondering... What if they start some of their backups in the third quarter and give them a chance? We've lost every third quarter anyway. That way some of the second stringers will get playing time and it might throw off the other side.

Also, don't we have a "refrig" on the team that we can put in on short yardage to bull over the goal line? That would be fun to see a big lineman taking the ball into the endzone.

    Just wondering out loud...

  45. homey ℞:

I think they should use Esme and Big C as Filipina house cleaners on the show. They would be contract killers/kidnappers hired to kidnap Danno's daughter.

  46. andy:

A blowout to right the ship is needed here, I really want to sit back , drink my beer and watch the warriors put up 72 on this team , just to get a little relief from the sting of this last game......For me the only retribution for that last loss is winning the wac this year, that being said........We do open next season against colorado and will have a chance at revenge, but this year is the one I thought we were going to get out of mediocricy(spelling) , and show other conferances that we belong with the best .....now the only way to do that is to beat fresno, nevada , and boise st ..to show that WE should have been put on the list....Hawaii is a great team that just finds ways to lose and ill be waiting till we get it all together...from long beach CA, ...GO WARRIORS

  47. koakane™:

adding my salutations to the 808, tasaiko's and tsaiket'es

slowly winding down from the poor second half showing from the warriors. strength of the team from summer was the defense but seems they still back there and not in fall mode yet. kudo's to offense they have improved when I watched them not perfect but getting better.

  48. Bulla:

we need more locals on 5-0 that don't play criminals...talk about typecast...sheesh

i think either Fiji or Kekaula come as Zulu's grandson...... that would be awesome!

  49. NCAA:

    Mr. Pomai,

I'm with you, only now? Better now than never.

It's going to be a battle at center. I see no problem in rotating them, Bronson is doing a good job.

Also, J H-T is a good NB. His instincts coupled with his quickness will enable him to break up or intercept passes throughout his career at UH.

  50. RupertDaStupert:

I believe the best version ever done on Hawaii Five-O was the original by the Ventures. Heavy drum rolls leading in. Lead electric guitar the main instrument. The one used on the first Five-O was heavy on the drumming and Brass music. Ditto the present version. But I like the heavy drum rolls leading in and the electric guitar as the lead instrument. Sends shivers up my spine. It sound like a true "fight song". Max Weinberg "Conan O'brians band leader" guest played with the Ventures. His heavy drumming was inspiring! You can fing that video on You Tube. Now don't get mad at me, this is my perception. You might differ on what is your favorite version. And I respect your perception on what is the best. I'd love to see the 'Ventures play their version at Aloha Stadium one day. Go Warriors! Book em Danno! Book em Macko! I believe in magic!

  51. Bulla:

    homey,

i'd pay to watch her kick your arse.... but maybe you could tell her that 'the King is alive, i've seen him at KK......j/k, haha'

  52. jeezy33:

Stephen, didn't Dave Aranda go to NY this past summer to learn how the Jets run their defense? Just curious because they run a 3-4 so I was thinking with our defense not clicking right now, maybe its time to switch back to get more speed and a better pass rush on the field. 3-4 was meant to stop the run and blitz. I do think our corners are good enough to handle some man to man.

  53. homey ℞:

I'd like to see the Warriors play mistake free football. Do what you're supposed to do and the game will come easy. Don't let the opponent dictate your game.

Koakane - Drinking early this morning I read.

  54. koakane™:

re: Hawaii 5 puka premier last night. I liked it, main characters funny, asians smart and battle scenes good. Very strong scenery of Hawaii Nei so giving it 4 star's out of 5. No 5 cause of the various references to non use of local stars.

  55. Shoko:

Off-topic: Did the original Hawaii five-0 have alot of brawls? I don't remember Steve and Danno duking(sp?) it out with the bad guys.

  56. homey ℞:

Bulla - I'd let her kick my butt for free! Long live the KING!

  57. kev-1:

jeezy33 - I agree. Does anyone see any real possibility that there would ever be a switch? Why haven't we been able to get any pressure on the opposing QB? I just figure that with a defensive mind as head coach and a bright mind as defensive coordinator we would have a much better defense. It's puzzling and frustrating.

    3-4 anyone?

  58. kev-1:

Since everyone is talking about it, I'll comment too. Hawaii 5-O looked good last night. The characters are good, except Chin Ho (he will always be Jin to me) needs to work on his pidgin. My favorite from last night's episode was the criminal smuggler asian guy with the mullet. He was funny.

  59. al:

so with the emergence of a very active aaron brown...is paipai going to be moved back to defensive end(again) where he probably fits in the best. probably needs another 15-20 lbs, but, that can happen.

aaron brown needs to see the field, and if it is at one of the olb, so be it. he needs to learn the position better and once his field vision becomes 20/20 again, i believe he will do very well.

paipai needs to finally land at one spot, learn his stuff, and then unleash the football player that he is on the opponents.

rotating so many guys just seemed to add to the confusion.

  60. jeezy33:

Look at how they do things in the NFl though. Ikaika Francis is a OLB for the dolphins. Should get some action this week as he was sick last week. Guys like Paipai are built for the 3-4 OLB. Stick the big boys up front and lets blitz. We have good enough cover guys.

  61. Markazulu:

The Season is still early so I'll save the our season is lost Drama speech. An just say the Coaches an Players need to wake up. They play hard but They're not playing with a swag, they lack intensity. As good as we do we do just as bad for every big play Pilares has had he dropped just as much passes. There is consistent problem on this team an there better than that. It's like the million dollar man we have the technology to rebuild him. But they just made a few mistakes learn from it an move on it's still early I wont give up on this team. Young coaching staff better be ready to grow up quick as Mac's job could be in major jeopardy.

  62. koakane™:

homey as for the team I would like to see them be competitive, fight till the end win or lose, show some passion when getting shoved around and if another player from 808 is on the team rack um.

  63. al:

hawaiian air has been previewing the first episode on its mainland flights. many like it. many also felt it was too much guns n killing for their children to view.

  64. al:

5-0 in its modern day version was a good watch for our house last night. sort of a local "24" type of series without the "continuation".

it was hard at first to hear daniel dae kim speak in perfect english after all those years of being mute in the "lost" series.

  65. NCAA:

    Mr. al,

Rotating players is a sound move only if the players have been taught their assignments based on the situation they are about to face.

  66. al:

i, too hope, that in the future there will be recurring or character roles portrayed by some of our local talents.

i know a big guy turned down such a role so that he could continue his career on the tube and radio air waves.

well, i hope, you all have a pleasant evening.

  88. gigi-hawaii:

I think Stretch might still have the video. Or you could search the WB blog for Tsai's showing of it.

  89. gigi-hawaii:

Kazz or whoever, when will lunch be served at the tailgate? I just hope our car isn't double parked, cause how will we be able to leave?

  90. al:

tailgaters have no set time to eat or served. you're joking right?

And now class what sound does a cat make? (J)J in his high voice purrs out a "Meow", "Meow". Excitedly the teacher rewards (J)J with a makeover kit.

Finally she asks, "And what sound does a mouse make"? Koakane yells out, "I know, pick me, pick me", "okay", the teacher regretfully says, "What sound does a mouse make Koakane"? Koakane proudly stands up and says, "CLICK".

I liked old McGarret. Perhaps this is a younger version who still fights and isn't worried about his hair yet.

I hope they continue showing different shots around our whole state. Perhaps have it tied in to Hawaiian folklore... like an episode that somehow involves Pele, with shots of Kilauea and/or Haleakala... or the Menehune Fishponds on Kauai... etc. Or just include stuff that will wow prospective tourists, like the Fern Grotto, the Leper Colony, Captain Cook's landing spot, Merry Monarch Festival, etc. We know this list can go on forever.

Plus, no forget Matsumoto's Shave Ice, or some Loco Moco plates, or even some saimin, Zip Pacs or Zippy's chili!!!

    • The Warriors actually have been running a 3-4 scheme every now and then. It's called the Rebel defense. It, of course, is different form the Okie (3-3-5).
    • The Warriors are concerned about the pass rush. Thus, the reason for the changes

Thanks LizKauai for your kind words. I have PTSD and O/C illness so I grab at straws to get me out of depressisn. And morale inspiring music like "Five-O" helps. General Robert E. Lee of the civil war said, "We cannot have a war without music". Always taking his band to battle. Both the North and South took their bands to battle. The soldiers marching long long miles would get tired and the band music boosted their morale. A night when the North and South would clash come morning, the North band would serenade the Sothern Army and the South band would serenade the North. Come Morn, they would fight. Music boosted their morale, help allay the fears of fighting and dying. Five-O is more than a song. Hearing the pounding drums in rythmic drum rolls leading in to inspiring electric guitar Leads inspires my morale and jacks me up to want to pound the opponents. The Warriors cannot have a battle without a band. Jacks you up! Makis you wanna fight! Makes you wanna win! Go Warriors!

Then the powers that be refused to give her full time work and pay becoming a teacher with a Master's degree. I'm guessing some rugby team in NZ is doing pretty well now.
The Waimea band has some unknown part time teacher for 16 or so students. I dunno if they can even play the Alma Mater or if they have a drumline.

LizKauai, I do remember our conversations way back. I am a lurker so post sporadically. No cure for PTSD but am taking medicines and like I said reach for straws that helps somewhat. Which is inspiring musc, inspiring DVD movies. Listening to civil war music which has some of the most awe inspiring and rousing morale boosting music you ever heard. Our revolutionary fathers knew the value of it. The fife and drums kept rhythn and timing and boosted the morale of our soldiers. The British loved the Bagpipes. It psychologically scared the hell out of the opponents when they heard it and it of course kept their own troops jaciked up. The UH has lost their perspective how powerful band music is. The drum corps with about fifteen drums lined up beating a rousing fight cadence. I liked the old UH fight song better. It had "fight, fight, fight" to it. A weapon addid with the 12th man "the fans".

    I know he'll find
    In star clustered reaches
    Love, strange love
    A starwoman teaches.

I know that his journey ends never.
His Star Trek will go on forever.

  204. Derek:

Based on what I "see" the Hawaii defense doesn't look like they are playing with passion. They are not "hitting" hard and running people down. They should be attacking instead of read and react. I don't see anybody who is a relentless pass rusher. I don't see anybody hitting somebody who is stopped in their tracks or being tackled backward. The coaches must find somebody who will go out and give 110%. If somebody is tired, get somebody in there who is fresh. There is no excuse for not playing hard. I know playing hard is difficult to quantify, but just watch the players and see what they do. We also need the defensive players to always try to strip the ball to cause fumbles. Every play is important.

A QUICK REMINDER: Be sure to bring your HI-5 cans & bottles from home to this Saturday's T-Gate. The beneficiary this time is the Wahine Volleyvall Program's summer school scholarship program.

We will NOT be arriving until sometime around 1 pm - doing another community service project - so please just put your empties which will be set aside. I would appreciate it if you would not put them in the garbage bins. Mei Ling says that she's set up the area.

Recorded five programs last night on three DVRs and watched two of them. One of them - a new series on Fox called Lone Star - I'll watch a couple more times before deciding if stays on my record/watch list.

We're probably going to watch HI-50 tonight or tomorrow night, but with 21 shows to record this week alone, I may wind up watching them at 3 am!!!

I can hardly wait!!! Playoff & World Series time coming up & basketball is just around the corner.

Time to go do some green stuff - be back around 10 pm

Kev 1 Kolb is out with a concussion. Left the game in the first quarter of last week's game. Kolb becomes the starter when he is medically cleared to play.

  219. LizKauai \m/:

A-joe- Once in a lifetime a June Jones walks onto the field and the Warrior Nation rises like a phoenix.
I don't know if we will ever see that kind of Nation again in - well- at least "my" lifetime. But it sure felt good and did some huge things for Hawaii.

In the greater scheme of things, who knows whether football will even be around as a sport in a kinder, gentler, brain-saving world. But at this time and place, I can say I have thoroughly enjoyed cheering for our Warriors and enjoying the 6Fs with the good folks of this blog and others.

  220. Michigan Warrior:

Only one on defense that made say "ooh" and "whoa" and "yeah" so far this season is Aaron Brown.

Most of the rest of time, I ended up saying stuff like "finally!" or "C'mon, man!", etc.

I'd rather they hit 'em hard and drop 'em first. When we stand them up, trying to strip the ball, they end up gaining an extra 4-7 yards and a new first down.

  221. Stephen Tsai:

Anyway, I haven't really thought of anything besides UH football the past three months.
Gotta keep the eye on the ball.

  222. Slugger:

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

    GO WAHINE!!!!

  223. Not an Expert:

June Jone had goals when he came to Hawaii, and many leaders didn't give a hoot. He had plans of what he believed will better the sports program especially football. He instituted changes in the logo, uniform, nickname, etc. Positive results today has other high schools that has used the "H" logo. Hawaii knocking on national recognition before his departure. He moved UH in a positive direction and now that path has some obstacles that needs to be dealth with. What is unknown if he were still here how will he have kept working on the goals and changes to make UH football a top contender year in year out. We know he isn't, so what?

Meaning the leaders that can shape the landscape of where the athletic program will go needs to make it clear for that to happen. The students, fans, business support, community support, then can help assist to reach the goals that is set forth. Think it, Set it, Do it. If there is none and nothing is put forth this is a reason why the program is where it is and will continue until a goal is implemented and action taken by all.

The time to improve and win is now.

Sugar Bowls and Christmas hysteria was nice and all, but today is today and tomorrow is tomorrow.

  226. Stephen Tsai:

Anyway, and I hope nobody takes this the wrong way, but the only other blog I read regularly is Tombo Ahi's.
It's a time issue. It's also that I'm at UH every day, and, there is a point you can get over-loaded on UH.
So when people talk about spats on other blogs, I'm not really sure what they're talking about.
All I know is if you don't launch personal attacks here, you're more than welcome to post. I don't know who "Steve" is, and I don't know what controversies he's caused elsewhere, but he does make interesting points. May not always agree, but, hey, who am I to throw stones?
But, in fairness, I'm going to delete any posts regarding the comments about the other blogs. If you wish to continue those debates, it's best to do them on those blogs.

    chopsuey boy

I went to the website as a "homer" intending to vote for the UH band and ended up not voting because my educational and professional persona kicked in and I decided to watch
( more like "evaluate" ) all of the bands. In my opinion, two other bands really stood out and I decided not to vote if I didn't vote for UH.

FYI, the two bands that were really impressive are the Notre Dame Marching Band and the
    U. of Maryland. Both bands utilized formations with all of the musicians marching as opposed to standing in a concert formation with the dancers featured at "center stage."

Also, both bands were very creative and their closers brought the house(s) down. Notre Dame's was very artistic and Maryland's was clever and unexpected.

    1. Nobody is more pissed off about this than our defensive players.

    2. They have pride and they have heart.

    3. They have some terrific athletes across the board on defense.

Its up to their oaches now.

  318. Derek:

Life is like a box of chocolates. You heard about that. Last weekend, the Houston Cougars lost to UCLA in L.A. The lost more than a game. They lost both their starting QB, who's an All-American Candidate and also their back up QB for the season. Talk about tough luck! Also, one of BYU's starting QB (they play 2) Riley Nelson is also out of the season. Now BYU has to play Nevada this weekend at home. Don't you think Nevada will run all over the Cougars? I think so. How things have changed. BYU is one of the worst offenses that year and one of the worst passing offenses and their yards per carry rushing is also one of the worst. Maybe, we at Hawaii should feel a lot better! Are you kidding me! Common, Man!
We should have had Colorado 24-0 at halftime. So what happened? We let em off the hook!
Excuses about the altitude and being tired are balony. If you can't stop the other guys it stands to reason that eventually we will get tired. Period. The same thing with Wisconsin last year. They just pounded us and we got worn out. The fact is somebody has to make a key play and get the defense off the field so that our offense can move the ball and the defense get some rest. I said that if the offense scores a touchdown on every possesion we cannot lose the football game. Well, Nevada scored on every possession (9) against Colorado State so it can be done. Play calling is an art. June Jones is very good at it. He knows a lot of the times that a certain play will work. Rolovich is not there, yet. This is where practice is critical to know your personnel and what will work. Certain players are very good at certain plays. I hope there is more imagination in the near future. I haven't seen anything new that I haven't seen before or even rarely. QB Graves should be given lots of practice on the QB read option so that he can be effective in the games. I read he was the best runner among the QBs.

  320. RainbowCliff:

    Good evening Tsaiko Nation !

The visitation to Carson High school was just simply one word INCREDIBLE !

When I walk through the administration office and out side the
door to see MASSIVE numbers of students from all genders as
the escort who was walking with me told me their student body
enrollment of freshmen through senior high school students was
3,600 ENRICHED as I was just FLOORED to see that many polynesians,
latinos, blacks, whites, phillipinos, asians ALL together as I smiled
with SO much HAPPINESS to the sight !

I was led to Honey Koletty the Carson High School College Counselor
Coordinator as her College Center was a TREMENDOUS sight to see
as it had ALL College pennants, banners, posters and computers every
where as students filled the first and second floor seeking College information !

Miss Koletty remembered me and was THANKFUL that I brought University
Of Hawaii curriculum catalog as we took a picture together with it as it
is now part of Carson High school College Center as my goal will be to bring
a pennant and poster so that HAWAII is VISIBLE to all academic and athletic
students of Carson High School !

Before I left we exchanged business cards as Miss Honey Koletty is of
polynesian background and is RESPECTED by her administrators, teachers,
parents and students as the "VERY BEST" as her title reads "College Counselor
    & Gifted Coordinator !

My goal is to get upper campus to send me additional catalogs as I will
bring the WEALTH of UH to all Harbor area schools as Banning, San Pedro,
Narbonne and Gardena awaits my Rainbow to enter through it's learning doors !

From the very least of my efforts my hopes is to get Hawaii in the minds
of SO MUCH young potential as parents, school officials and students are
EXCITED with the name of Hawaii as they showed me last Saturday when

  324. d1島:

    Derek,

The Former Coach also knows a lot about defense.

    There are moves,
    there are counter-moves,
knowing what the counter-moves are makes one very dangerous.

  325. A-House:

Chunky's closed many, many years ago. First Hawaiian Bank now occupies that space at the corner of Isenberg and King Streets.

Chunky's owner daughter was married to one of our good friends.

  326. d1島:

    A-house,

    Yeah, right!

Next you going tell me I no can redeem my Buck's Sweet Bread ticket!

  327. A-House:

What will it take to make coaches adjust to 2nd half changes to improve your team's efforts and come out winners??

Is it possible that the players really, really do not believe in some of the plays being sent in from the sidelines will work? Hope not as this can cause a tsunami of "standing around" and poor effort by all. When you are tired and sore it is very difficult to give 110% effort.

Why is it so difficult to say, "I was wrong"; "I screwed up"? ego? job security? Others can see it, why can't you?

  328. A-House:

    d1:

What is Buck's sweet Bread? They went out of business too?

I like the Molokai sweet bread found at swap meets and Made In Hawaii fairs.

  329. d1島:

    Ask Mrs. A-House ;-)

  330. SteveM:

ahhh...Buck's sweet bread! Came close to replicating it when I was experimenting with a bread-making machine. Not good enough though. I have never found one close to Buck's.

  331. d1島:

  336. jm2375:

Mr. A-house - I thought the UHFCU was where Chunky's used to be.

  337. al:

stevem...since your are the connoisseur of roast poek, i tell you no lie, the absolute best roast pork with brown gravy can only be found in one place.

believe me, for i have tried them all just like you. the most succulent, tender, taste bud satisfying roast pork that is all hawaii status bar none, which means no one else comes close can be partaked upon at little old "cupie's drive inn" located on west kamehameha avenue, kahului, maui.

to top it off, i swear the portion is at least one pound. you like gravy? the brown pan drippings gravy is made from that same giant roasting pan that slow cooks the pork every day. two really heavy scoops of white rice (don't waste the ono pork with brown rice, okay) and your choice of potato or toss green salad.

guarantee two things...first, the buggah stay ono, real ono. two, run out early don't go after 1:30 pm cuz no more by then. and three, if you can finish the whole plate during lunch, you just saved another $10 bucks cuz you ain't gonna have room for dinner.

i think i need to go maui pretty soon.

  338. al:

no ahouse is absolutely correct. fhb is where chunky's once dwelled.

  339. al:

ahouse....bam! (attempting to jar your memory) buck's bakery was right next to hisago delicatessen at the ewa end of the old honolulu stadium on king street. fifteen yards from where the old peanut lady set up shop (she was hiram's grandma, did you know?)

  340. d1島:

  342. al:

speaking of fuud...best deal in town is at sushi king on waialae road across from mother rice.
early bird special: 5:30 - 6:30 three entree teishoku. all tesishoku comes with sashimi and shrimp tempura (2 pc, veg, potato) and your choice of third entree. served with miso shiru, rice, namasu, tsukemono, beans, etc. ocha. at $14.95 it is a great deal. good portions for sure.

  343. al:

no forget the pancakes at tasty crust rivals any oahu pancake hale.

  344. al:

only thing is about maui is the lack of a good chinese restaurant, dim sum, roast pork, char siu. also, not so good on the thai and pho' eateries.

but, now get good ramen at ramen-ya which recently opened a branch across from walmart pearl kai.

Great to see the money that 5-0 is bringing into the islands. Of course there are a lot of locals working behind the camera and a few locals working their as extras. Now need to get the local SAG members working. Lots of local actors waiting tables and carrying bags that need the work in front of the cameras.

I will say this, I pity whoever does carry the ball in the tackling drills for our defensive unit, because we can bet on three things:

    1. Nobody is more pissed off about this than our defensive players.

    2. They have pride and they have heart.

    3. They have some terrific athletes across the board on defense.

Its up to their oaches now.

All we can do is wish all of them the best!

I pity them when they bring me down.

    al & A-house,

That post about Chunky's was synchronistic with the bam! that happened right across the street from FHB tonight, just about the time you posted it. A car ran into another one at the corner of the park... you could hear the BAM! up here. And then came the sirens...

    I remember Chunky's...

jm0000...always tell em a little bit and give em more for the money.

  360. al:

okay, listening to an eagles concert right now.

gonna go to the "life in the fast lane" and end up at the "hotel california". then head on out to the bar and have another "tequila sunrise" with that "witchy woman". don't know why i keep going back, "i can't tell you why" she's just a haunting woman and "one of thse nights" i'm going to "take it easy". but, i can't help seeing her "lying eyes" even if my vision is blurred by "the dust in the wind". she know that i always gave her "the best of my love". yah, i keep telling myself that "love will keep us alive" but, again i cried because i am just a poor "desperado"

  368. al:

yup, "life's been good to me so far" and "i've got a peaceful easy feeling". i took the "long road out of eden" as "the last resort" because i knew "how long" it would take since "i was too busy being fabulous". still, "there's gonna be a heartache tonight" even if we "try and love again". so, i am gonna "take it to the limit" while "i dreamed there was no war" after all this is the "end of the innocence"......

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Chemical scientists design processes to ensure the very most efficient operation. This means that the entire producing chain should be planned and regulated for costs. A chemical guy can both simplify and complicate showcase reactions for an economic benefit. Using a higher pressure or temperature makes several reactions easier; ammonia, for example, is simply produced from the component elements in a high-pressure reactor. Otherwise, reactions with a low yield can be recycled continuously, which would be complex, hard work if done manually in the laboratory. It isn't unusual to build 6-step or even twelve-step evaporators to reuse the vaporizing energy for an economic advantage. In contrast, laboratory chemists evaporate samples in a single step. 489. tv online:

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  490. tv online:

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  715. mitsubishi forums:

Whenever Gordon Murray is attached to a project, the hope is that some of the brilliance underscored Brabham racing cars and the McLaren F1 will rub off on his latest effort. A peek at the seating arrangement in the T25 city car does start us reminiscing about the 1990s supercar that many still regard as the pinnacle of the art. The driver sits front-and-center, with passenger seats set back on either side, just as they did with Murray's seminal supercar. UK publication Autocar has snagged a photo of the T25 as it headed out on double-secret road tests in England. The image shows the car looking like a contraption assembled around living room furniture, like all microcars tend to do. There's but one door, which swings up and away, and a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine is mounted out back.
