Wednesday ramblings

September 29th, 2010
By

• Left wideout Rodney Bradley attended but did not participate in today's practice. He has a strained left hamstring, and is listed as questionable for Saturday's WAC opener against Louisiana Tech.

• Billy Ray Stutzmann, Joe Avery and Dustin Blount worked out at left wideout today.

• Lametrius Davis has reclaimed the starting job at left cornerback.

• In addition to serving as a cornerback and nickelback, Lewis Walker also is working out at left safety.

• Kamalu Umu has moved back to defensive left end.

• Teammates are still gushing over slotback Kealoha Pilares' block on Alex Green's long touchdown play.

• Dr. Irwin Sewake donated an H hat for a prize giveaway. To enter, please post: "Another tackle by Jordan Monico." Avis will choose a winner tonight.

If Bradley isn't 100%, I think he should rest up this week and prepare for the next game! Speedy recovery to all!

"Blowouts–it’s happened at least once a year in the past five seasons.

Either the Fresno State offense sputters out of control and shuts down, or the defense completely collapses and is almost nonexistent.

In 2006 at home against Hawaii, Warriors’ quarterback Colt Brennan marched into Bulldog Stadium and put a whipping on the Bulldogs, winning 68-37. It was one of the biggest blowout losses in Bulldog Stadium history. The game also led Coach Pat Hill to bench starter Tom Brandstater in the second quarter in favor of backup Sean Norton."

  15. Garret:

I hope that Bradley isn't rushed back--UH will need him fully healthy (if possible) for the tough 2 games after La Tech. Rushing him back for this game wouldn't be worth it if UH could lose him for a long time if the hamstring injury is aggravated.

  16. Garret:

It seems like the WAC has already selected Montana--instead of giving a presentation yesterday, they got to watch the other 4 schools give presentations to the WAC.

“The assets that Montana could bring to the WAC are very significant, from the academic profile to the success they've had in football and men's and women's basketball would lend itself to the WAC very well," Benson told the Missoulian (Missoula, Mont.) newspaper in a telephone interview Tuesday.

O’Day told the Missoulian he was not asked to give a presentation. The other four schools – Texas State, Texas-San Antonio, Denver and Seattle – did make pitches as they applied for basketball-only membership.

  36. Shoko:

Can anyone remember Garret's post about why Montana is being considered and Montana State is not? Garret? You out there?

  37. HawaiiMongoose:

Montana is in if they want to be. The question is, do they want to be?

A poster on the Montana fan message board says that, according to a source in the UM athletic department, the school will probably make the move to the WAC but will take no action in that direction until after October 15th. That's when the current school president officially retires and the new president takes over. Apparently the current president is a big fan of the FCS playoff system and has been opposed to Montana moving up to FBS for many years.

  38. Slugger:

    Shoko,

Montana has a better record than Montana State. I got to watch both when I worked at NAU and Montana has had the stronger team.

  39. Shoko:

    HM,
Interesting post. I heard on another blog about some measure being passed in the Montana Legislature that if Montana wants to make the move, Montana State would have to be invited as well. Something about both schools had to be in the same conference.

  40. papajoe2:

    "Another tackle by Jordan Monico."

  41. HawaiiMongoose:

It would be expecting a lot for the state of Montana to support two FBS athletic programs. The entire state population is less than the population of Oahu, spread out over an area 250 times larger. UM is only able to fill its 25,000-seat stadium because fans have been willing to drive four, five, or even six hours to get there.

  42. CHEE!:

    "Another tackle by Jordan Monico."

  43. Last Call:

Oh joy can't wait to be in a conference with Texas State, Texas San-Antonio, Seattle, Denver and Montana.

So what are our great leaders doing besides playing golf with Mr. Peanut ?

Bobby C seems confident that we are leaving the WAC with an announcement coming in 2011. He hints that he has a reliable source.

  44. Shoko:

    Slugger,
I agree that Montana is the better school in terms of football based on their record, which is probably one, if not the main reason why the're are being considered. Getting alot of conflicting info from various board is what is driving me crazy.

  45. HawaiiMongoose:

    Shoko,

I think the assertion about there being a Montana law requiring both UM and MSU to be in the same conference is mistaken. I've seen information to the contrary on the UM fan board. It's not even clear that the board of regents that oversees both schools would have to approve UM moving to the WAC. There was a recent post saying that as long as UM finds a way to pay for the move without requiring additional state funds, they can do it.

  65. Shoko:

Since there was dialogue about Boise State's and Nevada's controversial cheap shots during last weekends games against Oregon State and BYU respectively, I thought Warriors fans would be interested in what the outcome of the evaluation.

Boise State safety Winston Venable has been suspended for the first half of Saturday's game at New Mexico State for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Oregon State's James Rogers, WAC commissioner Karl Benson said during a teleconference today.

Benson, in consultation with WAC supervisor of officials Jim Blackwood and two other nationally known rules experts, orginally handed down a game suspension, but Boise State appealed. The WAC sportsmanship committee reduced the suspension to half a game.

Benson also addressed the block that Nevada's John Bender made on BYU's Romney Fuga on Saturday. Bender, an offensive lineman, came at Fuga from behind and got his head in front of Fuga as he blocked him below the waist. Fuga suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Benson reaffirmed that the play did not constitute a foul and added that it would have been a foul in the NFL. He said there has been discussion by the NCAA rules committee to consider such a play a foul, and that it would likely be brought up again.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

  70. CoolEthan:

Last call, What are those Mods on the forum?

  71. Not an Expert:

A school from a conference gets to a level in football that makes them a commodity for their conference. Thus that school has made the conference rating much better in respect to BCS points. Now that they have reached a higher level that school get swiped away by another conference enhancing this other conference BCS point standing and diminishing the conference standing they are leaving.

As I stated a school becomes a valuable commodity in football and what I want to know, is there any compensation that the conference that is taking that team away from another conference have to pay for that move? If compensation is made fine, if not the laws of business needs to be written into all things that can create loss of current and future revenues.

  72. djmitcho:

    "Another tackle by Jordan Monico."

  73. Shoko:

    MIH,
I haven't noticed BSU or Nevada having a history of cheap shots or unscrupulous conduct on the field. Time will tell, I guess. However, I would say, the refs will scrutinize the Broncos and Packs conduct on ther field in future games.

  74. gigi-hawaii:

    Hi everybody!!!

    "Another tackle by Jordan Monico."

If I win, I'll give the hat to hubby.

  75. madeinhawaii:

If you look at Texas San-Antonio's football schedule... they have FCS teams booked for full schedules in 2011 and 2012. Then they have 4-5 Div I teams booked for the next 3 years. This team is serious about going Div I in 2013. 2011, is their first year of football.

  76. Garret:

    MIH,

Should we really focus on cheap shots when UH probably led the country in personal fouls in Mack's first year and Hansen threw a couple of elbows against Charleston Southern? I agree with Shoko that BSU and Nevada do not have a history of fouls like that, and I'd bet that UH has more personal fouls than either school over the past 3, 5, 7, and 10 year periods.

  77. Garret:

    MIH,

Yes, UT-SA wants to go to D-IA in 2013, but the WAC wants them in 2012. I don't think they will be ready in 2012 and they already have the contracts signed for games in 2012.

  78. Garret:

Karl Benson says that other schools are using the WAC's situation to recruit against WAC schools.

I think it's safe to say there is negative recruiting going on out there in all sports, and our coaches are at a disadvantage when others suggest the WAC isn't gong to be around. It's very important we send a very strong message, sooner than later, that the WAC is going to continue to operate.

    http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/utsa/2010/09/benson-teleconference.html

  79. Garret:

Benson also said that the WAC is focused just on the 5 schools that were present yesterday. So, no UC-Davis, Sac State, Lamar, or others.

Candidates besides UTSA, Texas State, Denver, Seattle and Montana?

Right now, we're focusing on these five. We will spend our time and attention during this 30-60 day window on those fives. There may be others that are on the peripheral that could come back into play.

  80. Garret:

    Update on Montana.

    Where are Montana's considerations?

Primarily, the feasibility study, the current landscape, the timing, the change in (school) presidents, whether indeed this is the right time for the University of Montana to make the move to the FBS.

I'm hoping anyone in the Western area would be aware of the tremendous success Montana has had (in the FCS). As I travel around the country, and people are asking me about what our options are, more often or not, I'm being told by others that Montana is a perfect fit for the WAC. We recognize that. (But) we will respect the process Montana is in (as it changes school presidents).

  81. Garret:

    Shoko,

Montana State doesn't have the money to upgrade its facilities and add scholarships needed to move to D-IA. Montana may not have the money either--they need to upgrade their facilities, add football scholarships, and add several women's sports to be able to move to D-IA.

  82. madeinhawaii:

    Garret,

I'm not for "cheap shots" late hits/punches for personal fouls.. nor am I for possible "season/career ending shots" as personal fouls. But I think the latter may be more deliberate or calculated.

  83. madeinhawaii:

Getting personal fouls, and ultimately kicked out of the game for excessive celebration.. well... only a Craig could pull off Stuntz- like that... -man.

  92. Derek:

Hamstrings take time to heal. For the rest of the season, I would not play Bradley this weekend and see how he is for next week at Fresno St. I think Billy Ray and Avery can handle it for this week.

    Pomai:

I like the Warriors chances w/ our Moniz against La Tech announced 4th string QB. We are playing at home, La Tech has lost 3 straight tough losses against some very decent competition in Texas A&M, Navy, and Southern Miss. Either way, they will be very motivated or they will be discouraged from those losses and they now have to travel 5,000 miles to come to Hawaii. Warriors got some turnovers last week and should have had a couple more interceptions by Gomes so they have some confidence. For how long is anybody's guess, but this is a revenge game for the Warriors after losing at La Tech last year when Alexander hurt his ACL. Historically, Hawaii has fared well against La Tech here at Aloha Stadium. Prediction: Hawaii defense will make some big plays. There has to be finally at least one big special teams play. Moniz will be on target and getting better with each game. Take it to the bank, bank!

    Hawaii - 45
    La Tech - 3

If I won the prize for last week's score, how can I receive it? If not, not a problem.

If Bobby Curran claims he has a source saying UH will announce leaving the WAC in 2011 and that source is correct, I wonder if the SAVINGS on sending our non football sports to the BIG WEST played a bigger factor in the decision moreso than the ability to schedule successfully for an independent football program?

  107. Curt:

So Bobby Curran's source says we're likely to announce in 2011 about leaving the WAC? I didn't hear that. To me, that probably means going independent for football and everything else goes to the Big West. I hope JD has done his homework on the football scheduling issue. We all know how hard our previous AD had in scheduling a few games. I think we need another creative NCAA exemption to help us draw teams to the islands.

  108. Kazz (click to support UH softball):

November's volleyball LOI date is a little more than a month away and the BIGGEST recruit of mention that has been in the online message boards and whatnot is Wahine volleyball recruit Jane Croson.

With all the question marks about the status of the WAC and where our non-football teams will end up, some expressed concern about how Croson will follow through with her verbal to Dave Shoji.

I don't follow volleytalk religiously, but I believe all indications show Croson will still commit to UH. If that is the case, then one would have to credit Dave Shoji on answering any concerns Croson may have brought up to him, if she did at all.

I believe this to be the case for all the UH coaches that are in pursuit of recruits at the moment or soon will be. Yes, it is out of the hands of the coaches, but they are the immediate contacts with these recruits and I hate to say it, but our coaches will be put on the spot to answer questions they may not know.

  109. Curt:

How about a creative NCAA exemption like:

Whoever travels to Hawaii for a football game gets to start their season one week earlier; this of course would allow their opponents to play one week earlier as well. There would probably be some dissent on this but hey, it's a significant disadvantage to schedule games here.

  111. Kazz (click to support UH softball):

    Curt,

One thing about that is how a team's fall camp would be altered. I know there is an NCAA rule about how many practice hours a team gets for their fall camp, but I am not sure if there is a rule as to WHEN a team can start their fall camp.

One earlier week to start = fall camp begins earlier for them also.

Then you would have concern yourself with the logistics of having your players on campus earlier for fall camp and whatnot.

Curt ~ Sounds like your #109 would spark some controversey. Some malcontents may scream 'foul!' Who cares? I like the idea of an early start. Good incentive for those schools who may want to use it as a recruiting tool.

  117. Curt:

Yes. Camps would be permitted to start one week earlier. This would give schools another incentive to schedule games in Hawaii. Does anyone have a better incentive for us to propose to the NCAA that wouldn't cost $ but yet give teams incentive to come here?

  118. Kazz (click to support UH softball):

I don't think we would have a problem with scheduling by going independent, if you look at all the conferences, go after the mid-tier schools in each conference, they are still SEC, Big Ten, Big East, PAC 10 and so on schools. This would be their bowl game. Go Nation Wide, have the same outlook that the fresneck's had, anybody anytime anywhere. But the downer with this is we would have to win and win big. It can be done, hard but is doable.

    Homey,

No, but there are always official press releases saying so-and-so SIGNED with Hawaii.

  125. Jeff:

I would think volleyball recruiting would be the sport least affected by the WAC turmoil. I don't think any player commits to Hawaii because of the WAC and to play teams like Fresno State or Boise State. (who are frankly bad volleyball teams)

Players commit to Hawaii because of the atmosphere and chance to play in front of thousands of fans each night, or because of the great coaching staff, chance to make a run to the final four each year, or because of the tough pre season schedule, but certainly not because of the WAC.

Wahine volleyball is about the ONLY program in a mid-major conference that can get away with selling the experience to recruits as opposed to the level of competition within the conference.

Of course with what the Wahine have built over the decades in winning consistently, it has brought on the ability to still schedule top tier competition outside the conference early in the season to be followed by NCAA tourney appearances one after the other.

    random thoughts...

...the university of hawaii should be seeking an extra week of football, either at the tail end or prior to everyone else starting. this will allow teams who play during the extra week an opportunity to fully take advantage of the hawaii 13th game exemption and it gives hawaii an additional week to schedule a much needed bye during the season.

...since no one mentioned this, did you notice that mcgarrett alluded to the heat in hawaii, saying it was 100 degrees. hah, when was the last time we reached three digit temps? i have been liking the new 5-0, howver, they need someone to proof the "facts".

...i believe that we are on tract to have a knockout season, starting with la tech.

    ...go billy ray!

  135. rage777:

So if the teams that play UH can start a week earlier, does that mean only the teams UH are playing (13 teams) have to play each other? Or does this mean 26 teams can start the season earlier (the team UH plays plus whoever else they play)?

I don't see this as much of an incentive. Don't a lot of teams already complain about how long the season is, with their regular season games, conference championship games, and bowl games?

If UH goes independent, who exactly are we going to be scheduling in late November, early December? That is when all the conferences will be playing each other to see who is conference champions. Unless we are only playing the other independent teams during this time, so only Army, Navy, and BYU (I don't know if ND would play us) every year in November and December. Have you looked at the teams that Navy and Army have been playing late in the year? Not many big names.

If UH cuts the number of football scholarships, can they then cut some of the women sports under Title IX? If so, then that could be a way to at least save some money. Have more local walk-ons.

To cut down football schollies enough so that a women's sport would be cut also in accordance with Title 9, I think you might as well cut the ENTIRE football program.

  141. HawaiiMongoose:

#135 rage, another question is, who are we going to be scheduling in October and early November? All but the other four independents will be in the midst of their conference seasons during that time. They may be willing to host UH at their place but few will agree to travel to Honolulu for a non-conference game. At best we'll convince a few FCS or financially struggling FBS teams to play here, if we pay them enough money. Not an attractive prospect.

  142. Aaron:

curt's idea of allowing UH to play their first game a week earlier is worth looking into. they could hold it a week before the other games in a similar fashion with the BCA football classic that used to be played. on top of giving teams an added incentive to play here, it would be the only game on tv that saturday and if we are independent, we get to keep all the money for ourselves.

But since the UH Rainbow Warrior Marching Band WILL be featured in national ads for the show, I lifted my boycott.

In short, I thought the second episode was rushed and I was concerned with how the characters McGarrett and Danno appeared to be sterile, even during the times they attempted comedic dialogue. There is nothing wrong with the actors themselves, maybe just they way their parts were written.

I like where the show COULD go and the potential is there though.

Every show has their so-so episodes, hopefully this will be the LAST "so-so" episode for a while.

  153. Garret:

It looks like the Southland Conference's Commissioner has been informed that UT-San Antonio and Texas State are leaving for the WAC.

Southland Conference commissioner Tom Burnett said Wednesday he’s already accepted that two of his strongest members, UTSA and Texas State, will be leaving to join the Western Athletic Conference.

“Quite honestly,” he said, “and this might be my personal opinion, but them going to the WAC is a foregone conclusion. It’s a ‘when,’ not an ‘if.’ ”

    http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/college/local_colleges/UTSA_Texas_State_leaving_for_WAC_appears_imminent_104034314.html

  154. Garret:

UT-San Antonio didn't want to start D-IA play until 2014 (their plan was actually targeting 2015 until recently), but the WAC is trying to push them to start in 2012.

Ironically, as badly as UTSA wants to gain entry to college football’s top flight, the process could be unfolding even faster than it would like.

Before the WAC became an option, the Roadrunners had adjusted their timeline to reach the FBS as an independent in 2014, a year faster than the plan they initially unveiled last January.

  155. rage777:

That was a Camaro? I could have sworn I saw the Mustang symbol before they jumped in the car. I love the Camaro (and Challenger), I could have sworn that wasn't one. But then again, I am getting old and the eye sight might be going too. I still think they need a better car. The car makes the show. Who can forget the Ferrari with Hawaii 5-0 and the Ferrari Testarossa with Miami Vice. I say get the Tesla, fits the Hawaii image of going green with an electric car and it has the sporty looks that meets the original 5-0 standards.

  156. Garret:

Benson says that Texas State and UT-San Antonio can join the WAC as provisional members for a couple of years before they are full D-IA members. That means that every WAC school will play both teams each year even though wins would only count as D-IAA wins for bowl eligibility (only 1 win could be counted but all losses would count).

But Benson said Tuesday that both schools could join the league as provisional members, to fill out the schedules of the six remaining members, until they have fulfilled their requirements.

    Pomai,

Why would the SEC schools travel to Hawaii? The Hawaii Exemption is worthless to them because they need the 2 bye weeks to deal with the brutal conference schedule. Their TV deal encourages them to play all home games in their nonconference schedule and they rarely travel far for home-and-home series. They make $5+ million per home game...and would barely break even with what UH gives visiting teams.

  168. Aiea Makule:

Just musing about an NCAA exemption that may help UH. Perhaps a change in the bowl eligibility requirement to needing a winning record to be bowl eligible (not a .500 record) may convince some schools to play that extra game and schedule UH.

  169. papajoe2:

Starting the season early was mentioned on this blog a few months ago. I believe teams can start practicing a certain amount of weeks before their first game. So if UH starts 1 week earlier, then their opponent may start 1 week earlier too. No one else may start earlier. This may be good for their opponents as they will add another bye week or use the game as their 13th game for a home game money maker. Scheduling a weak team or a Div.II team following the Hawaii trip, then taking a week off may actually help the opponent to prepare for their upcoming season with minimizing the risk of a loss following the Hawaii trip.

if we could get the ncaa to agree to allow us to start a week earlier or a week later, it would be a home game for obvious reasons. the team coming in gets to either start a week earlier or later as well as have this as their 13th hawaii game rule.

because the game is ahead or after the rest of the ncaa, it will not only give us another bye week during the course of the season as this is imperative to the amount of travel that we would have during the rest of the schedule (especially if we are independent). but, this will give us an exclusive tv game nationally, provided we play a marquee team since we would be the only game that day/week. surely this could be an additional draw to entice a quality opponent to be featured on national tv.

i think it is worth pursuing.

  188. OldDiver:

I was thinking we are kicking off either to start the game or to start the second half.

  189. al:

kazz...some say that there is strong support for us to fly the coop and go independent. it is starting to make more sense. contacts are being made as we speak. if the ad can get six or more recurring teams or a good rotation of quality opponents this could be a go.

i believe a lot of this hinges upon what happens with the wac and how the fallout will be in the next year or two as more and more realignment begins to take shape. i think that the big12 is the conference that will have the most changes in the near future espicially with power players like texas and rest will be subject to the domino effects of it.

When SEC teams play on the road, they do not get any ticket money and they do not get any TV money. Florida, Georgia, and Alabama make much more for each home game than the lower-level SEC teams of course, more than $5+ mil.

UH gives something like $300k to visiting D-IA teams, which basically covers travel expenses.

  192. Last Call:

I'm getting to that part of the day when I've fully vented and need a nap. :-)

  193. Pomai:

OK then if we were to stay in the wac with the edition of the texas teams an so on maybe we should revisit taking some of those so called bodybag games for our out of conference games?

  194. Garret:

Starting the season early was mentioned on this blog a few months ago. I believe teams can start practicing a certain amount of weeks before their first game. So if UH starts 1 week earlier, then their opponent may start 1 week earlier too. No one else may start earlier.

This is mentioned in UH forums all the time, but it is completely unfair to the rest of the NCAA teams and has *zero* chance of happening. The competitive advantage provided would result in the vast majority of D-IA teams voting against it.

UH has only a *tiny* amount of political capital and good will to pursue NCAA rule changes. Trying things that are sure to be shot down would use that all up. I have NEVER seen any explanation of how adopting a rule like that would be suitable for the rest of the NCAA, especially for the competitive imbalance caused in conferences when some teams would get an extra week or practice. If we only look at things from UH's point of view, our viewed is skewed and we are not living in reality. If a rule change won't help the rest of the country also, its chance of passing is extremely low.

In my opinion, the ONLY rule change that has a chance to help UH is extending the season to 15 weeks. That would make the Hawaii Exemption worth something again and JD already showed what types of awesome games UH could schedule when he took advantage of the 15-week 2013 season. The excuse to making the season 15 weeks would be that the NCAA kept increasing the number of games without increasing the number of weeks the games could be played, and teams need more bye weeks.

Coaches around the country always want more bye weeks, so they would be for it.

TV contracts would go *up* in value because there would be another week to sell. TV could show 15 weeks instead of 14 weeks, and the extra week would help teams be able to play non-Saturday games without running out of bye weeks. Thursday games could make a lot of money, but teams have to use a bye week to play them except for the first week of the season.

More teams would get to be on TV because they could get on TV in weeks
when other teams have bye weeks.

This is an example of a proposal where EVERYBODY wins, so UH could get NCAA support. Looking at things that just help UH and not the rest of the D-IA teams is simply asking for charity and there is no reason why the rest of the country should just give UH an advantage they won't benefit from.

Next season we start with Colorado at Aloha... (pay back game)
then we start with USC for the next two seasons.. first away.. then back here.
Then Colorado at Colorado again in 2014.
We also have BYU in 2012 and 2013.

2012, 2013 OoC schedules will balance out the WAC's weakened schedule.
2011, with Boise's exit and Nevada breaking in a new QB... Warrior's schedule looks about as strong as 2007.

  197. Garret:

SEC and Big 10 teams are getting so much TV money now that the asking price for bodybag games is going up. Colorado got $1.3 million for a road game without getting a home game in return, and I already posted an article a few months ago where people are talking about *$2 million* for paycheck games in the future.

The trouble is that travel comes out of the payment, so paycheck games are less worth it to UH than any other school. Also, the Big 10 and SEC are so far away from UH, so travel is even more costly.

When the Pac-12 gets its new TV deal, then the Pac-12 schools will be looking for paycheck games. I wouldn't mind UH playing a paycheck game at Stanford or Cal--great for recruiting and the $1 million to $2 million would be nice. U-Dub and Washington State would be great also for recruiting. USC and UCLA may be good options also for recruiting.

  198. Jeff:

That's why UH is getting Inouye involved. Hawaii may not have a lot of political capital, but Inouye has a LOT of political capital that he can use.

If he can throw his weight around to help UH I would be all for it. Inouye isn't going to around forever so now is the time to take advantage of his considerable clout in DC.

  199. kev-1:

Inouye isn't going to do anything for the Hawaii program. The NCAA or any other sports related entity could give a flying rip about what Inouye has to say about anything.

I have a hard time getting excited about Seattle, Denver, UTSA, Texas St., Montana and whoever else being considered for the WAC. Hawaii getting in the Big West for all other sports other than football would be huge. It is a very strong conference w/ volleyball, baseball, softball, etc. w/ all California schools. That's perfect for Hawaii. On the football side, I am not opposed to going independent with the problem being scheduling. But, here is a start w/ a possibility.

UNLV - home and home every year; maybe 2 for 1 at Vegas. Heck, it's just like a home game for Hawaii.
BYU - annually since they are also an independent; home and home
Army, Navy, or Air Force - rotate the 3 service academies every year.
Notre Dame - schedule them every 3 or 4 years.
San Jose St. - play them every year, home and home.
FCS team - play 1 team every year in the middle of the season.
Pac 10 team - play 1 or 2 games every year, either at the beginning of the season or at the end of the season or both. They are 12 teams in the Pac 10, but UCLa has nevery played Hawaii recently.
Mountain West - play at least 1 team every year, whether it be Fresno St., Nevada, SD St., etc.
Conference USA - play 1 team annually. Somebody like SMU, Centra Fla, Tulsa, or UTEP, etc. Not likely Memphis, E. Carolina but Tulane, S. Miss, etc. has come to Hawaii in the past. SMU and Houston on the road is perfect since we can fly direct.
Big 10 - play a big 10 team maybe every 5 years, either at the beginning or ending of the season. If in the middle of the season we have to go on the road.
SEC - might have to travel to the South to get a big pay day such as when we went to Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee.
ACC - play on the road; play Georgia Tech and Paul Johnson can be a nice guy and play us. Hawaii can fly direct to Atlanta on Delta.
Others - we can always try to schedule the likes of New Mex. St., Utah State, Idaho also.

Hawaii fans want the see the Warriors play a very good schedule with good teams coming here. We cannot go back to FSC level. It is FBS Division I-A football or bust. With a good schedule, we can go after and get our share of Division I recruits every year. For the other sports it would also help recruiting by being in the Big West. Dave Shoji should know, Bob Coolen should know, and I'm sure Mike Trapasso should know that it would be a big plus for their programs. It is up to Jim Donovan and the UH administration, but I am sure they are already planning for the next move.

  203. Curt:

    Garret,

Regarding #194, you're very insightful. In order get others to initiate change, we stand a much better chance if we can show how they will benefit from it. Excellent.

  204. Kazz (click to support UH softball):

    Al,

Unfortunately, I am not like you with your birds or ST with his boulevard buddies.

But if we can get those teams locked up for our football schedule then we are pretty much set to go.

I am pretty confident the BIG WEST will be the new home for our other Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine. In one of Ferd's columns it seemed that the Big West would be MORE than happy to take in UH's non-football sports provided the subsides were there.

One would figure that with the travel money being saved with UH participating in a California-based conference would make it somewhat of a wash when it came to shelling out money to fly the conference out here to play. Maybe UH would even SAVE money in the process.

  205. cheepono:

    Another tackle by Jordan Monico.

  206. kev-1:

Derek #203 - Couldn't agree with you more. I would rather watch UH play good teams every year and take our lumps if necessary. It will only make the team better in the long run. It would definitey help recruiting, especially the opportunity to play teams with more exposure than the WAC has. I will not pay to watch UH play a bulk FCS (or new FBS former FCS team) schedule. Too many steps backwards.

  207. Wacky Wac:

Benson quoted in the Seattle Times newspaper this afternoon. Seattle University and Denver would be joining in all sports other then football. SU basketball is a legit program with Cameron Dollar as the head coach.

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/seattleuniversity/2013026139_seattleu30.html

Seattle U. and Denver are non-football-playing schools and would be invited for their men's basketball and other programs.

Hogan said 17 of Seattle U.'s 19 sports would be able to move to the WAC and said, "With so many sports it would fit us quite well. ... To be a part of the presentation as a potential conference member, we think that is a significant development for Seattle U. athletics."

Seattle U. is in the process of making the move to full Division-I status. Benson said if Seattle U. were invited it would join the conference for the 2012-13 season, the first year the school is eligible for the NCAA basketball tournament.

Benson said that all of the schools made it "very, very clear that they had strong interest in the WAC." Seattle U. is playing as an independent but has said it would like to join a conference. Many figured the West Coast Conference might be a natural fit. Seattle U. was a member of the WCC before dropping out of Division I in 1980. However, the WCC recently invited Brigham Young to join for men's basketball and has not shown interest in inviting Seattle U.

Benson said WAC officials will make campus visits to each of the schools and that invitations could then be extended "in the next 30 to 60 days."

It is expected that the invitations could come in waves, with the WAC attempting to fill its football vacancies first, then move on to Seattle U. and Denver, which is a member of the Sun Belt Conference.

Texas-San Antonio and Texas State (located in San Marcos) are each Football Championship Subdivision schools that are looking to make the move to Football Bowl Subdivision status. Each is currently a member of the Southland Conference. Benson said Montana — a member of the FCS Big Sky Conference — did not make a formal presentation to join the WAC and is conducting a feasibility study of whether it wants to make the move to FBS.

    "Another tackle by Jordan Monico."

  209. Stephen Tsai:

Put it this way, if UH goes independent, thus crippling the WAC further, you can kiss goodbye any games against San Jose State, Idaho, Utah State, New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech. Trust me on this. They're not going to be happy campers. What's more, UH couldn't bolt until after 2011, right? Also, Fresno State, Boise State and Nevada made it clear they don't want to travel to Hawaii. Yes, schools that are being sued don't feel like being chummy. Stanford, Cal and UCLA won't play in Hawaii. Not sure if Utah will agree, either. Have we run out of West Coast schools?

  210. Stephen Tsai:

Also, if UH gets a TV deal, kiss goodbye pay-per-view. K5/Oceanic is not going to want to show UH baseball, softball, women's basketball, soccer, etc., without the football contract.
And, don't forget, ESPN doesn't pay big bucks, nor will it let UH dictate the schedule. If ESPN wants UH playing at 5 p.m. Tuesday, well — cough, cough — better get a doctor's note.

  211. tommui:

Re #199. Dan Inouye's clout will be with his financial supporters, not with the Senate/House in DC.

One year when he was honorary chair for the Symphony, there was a lot of monetary support. Maybe they should have kept him as the honorary chair.

You may have read in the papers and on the web about many of the Congressional people have raised money for their favorite charities - probably because they can't pocket it themselves!

So the Honorable Senator can always nudge Joe the Moneybags (who may have some interest in pending legislation or some unknown interest in legislation in the future, or who may just be a good guy who needs a nudge) to help out.

  212. tommui:

If Big West is going to make a move, they had better do so before the WAC starts gathering up a bunch of non-football schools which would make it harder for UH to join up.

  213. Jeff:

    ST,

What about the suggestion of some others that UH stay in WAC for football only and go to Big West for all other sports. Wouldn't that be a win win for everyone, this reduces travel costs for all schools involved, and UH can still fill out its football schedule.

  214. Last Call:

LOL,the old trust me line. :-)

  215. HawaiiMongoose:

ST #209, you make a really good point. If the WAC does add Texas State, UTSA and Montana to get to nine football-playing members, then UH leaving to go indy will not "kill the conference" as some think and relegate the other members to also going indy and having to play games against UH in the middle of the season. Instead it will leave UH on the outside looking in, with none of those schools having a reason to put Hawaii on their schedule.

  216. Kazz (click to support UH softball):

Can anyone here, OUTSIDE the UH brass, agree on what is the BEST move for UH athletics as a whole?

Seems like the SAFEST thing is obviously to stay put. Looks like there WILL be a WAC of sorts for a while, however, considering the infrastructure that these Texas-based schools tend to have, I wouldn't be surprised WHEN a school like Texas State will fill the need to act like a BSU and want to leave as soon as they get in.

  217. Kazz (click to support UH softball):

    RE: UH football going independent.

Anyone ever see the opening sequence to the movie "Office Space"?

You get stuck in traffic on the road and you are in one lane that is not moving but then the lane to your left is. You move over and then that lane stops moving also, BUT the lane you just left opens up again, but everyone is being a ____ and won't let you back in before the lane stops moving again.

Then by the time you can move back into the lane you originally moved from that WAS moving, it's not moving anymore and then again the lane you JUST left starts moving again.

    C'est la vie….

  219. Curt:

In my opinion, I just can't see UH going independent in football. The difficulties in scheduling seem too "dangerous."

The other significant issues would be:

    1. Where to park the non-football sports. Will the WAC allow UH to go elsewhere?
    2. Can UH retain all rights and revenue from its own TV contract?

  220. Curt:

    homey,

...as for me, I say UH has its troubles but pulls out a close one in the end.

  222. Kazz (click to support UH softball):

    Curt,

Through all the talk, IF UH football goes indy, the WAC has no say in what we do for our other sports. The funny thing is, the most "guaranteed" scenario of stability is IF football goes indy, then the BIG WEST would be happy to take our non-football sports provided UH can pony up subsidies which should be much of an issue considering UH would be saving money on travel, especially for the non-football team sports, since all BWC teams are in the state of California.

IF UH goes indy in football, you can chalk up the reason I mentioned above as to one of the "pluses" they considered.

    1. Where to park the non-football sports. Will the WAC allow UH to go elsewhere?

We've had numerous discussions concerning scheduling, and "the Hawaii/Alaska Exemption". One way to insure nationwide tv exposure would be to be the first to host a football game each year, like the old "Pigskin Classic" and it's predecessor. With ESPN's backing, we could start off the season, but with a doubleheader, at Aloha Stadium. Imagine the tourists who would be in state at least a week early from THREE different schools, plus visiting UH fans, for this event? Secure big time corporate sponsorship, longterm, to be able to guarantee a certain payout for each participating team.

As far as sales are concerned, the iPhone is already a household name backed by brilliant marketing. It's hard to change the mainstream.

Droid phones will continue to come out and Android will continue to make waves in the OS game.

In fact, my Droid X will probably be surpassed by the NEXT Motorola Droid called the T-something or whatever… Im not sure but the rumors are flying.

Can only play 12 team conferences at the beginning of a season, they all have or will have a championship game. NO AD, no matter how weak their team is will schedule a game here in late Nov. or early Dec. on the assumption their team won't make their conference championship game.

Gotta support Donovan in whatever decision he makes. He's privy to all the behind the scenes wheeling and dealing. You know he's crunching the numbers ($$$) behind every possible scenario. He's stated before that he doesn't want to or see a need to, to make a quick decision.

With conference realignment still in flux the possibilities of where UH finds itself in 4-5 years are many. We may still be in the WAC or maybe the MWC or maybe in conference that doesn't currently exists. Maybe we'll be a total independent or independent in football only. Maybe we'll be part of an alliance of teams left out should the prediction of four 16-20 team super conferences come true,

There are many scenarios that could play out. Gotta trust Donovan for now. Best way to help is to keep renewing your season tickets for the sports you have.

Fort Worth Star-Telegram also has the TCU-Big East news.

The Big East wants the Frogs because it desperately needs an immediate upgrade to its awful football profile.

TCU would want the Big East because it's a conference with something they have never had, the automatic qualifier into the world of the sorry BCS system.

Chad Owens was named CFL special teams player of the month.

The man known as the “Fly’n Hawaiian” totaled 639 kick return yards in the month that added to his league-leading combined yards tally of 2,098, more than 600 ahead of second place Dion Murphy.

Similar to Flemons’ big game against the Lions, the electrifying returner had a sensational performance of his own in the Argos’ lone win against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Week 12.

Owens was the catalyst to the victory, scoring on an 80-yard punt return in the third quarter. He run was apart of 125-yard punt return effort in the game.

Interesting post by Al on SportsHawaii about UH recruiting. The little birdie's news isn't good here.

    there are two reasons why we haven't had any early commitments;

one, the weakening of the wac has got to be a concern of many recruits.
two, we haven't had a winning record the past two years.
three, tony tuioti is an asst coach this year and his replacement has not kept up with the standards and pace that tony established. we are far behind in scheduled visits, for example. tony worked ten times as hard doing this stuff.

    1. No one expects you to bring enough for everyone. (if it runs out, too bad...)

    2. Not everyone needs to bring something every week. (Imagine if everyone brought food for 6-12 people...we'll have 6-12 times too much). If the potluck list looks full to you, then rest a week and be among the first to list next time. If the list is empty...help.

Please post your food item on the blog before Friday night. You can always make last minute substitutions.

There is no way a top football prospect will want to play in a conference in shambles. Yeah we going have one here and there that have bled green since hanna baddah days like Billy Ray but c'mon now how the frikk we going try persuade a top football recruit to play for UH against subpar competition??? Sorry, but recruiting big time players especially in this funk of crap the WAC is in ain't going to happen. Plus with all the talent we currently have on the team right now, we need to start whoopin arse and winning big which is something that hasn't been consistent enough the past couple years. I mean I see the Hawaii player tracker and think to myself, what if had the Manti Te'o, Scott Smith type players, but in all honesty I can see why they would choose to go elsewhere to bigger and better places and be able to showcase their talent against the best competition out there. Cause let's not kid ourselves, a Manti Te'o beastin at Notre Dame could mean easy 1st rd. NFL draft pick, a Manti Te'o beastin at UH...maybe a 2nd or 3rd rounder...just sayin based on competition he would have gone up against.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

    oldie,

Mack Brown has built up so much good will that *nobody* is calling for him to be fired. Most criticism talks about what needs to be done better but mentions how they believe in the coaches to help improve the team. The big thing for Mack Brown is that he's won 10+ games since forever, has probably the top recruiting class in the country committed for 2011, won a national title, and was in the national title game last year. Basically, he's earned a lifetime pass from the people who were calling for the firing of past coaches. He has *every* booster with the big bucks on his side.

If you look at Mack Brown's record, he's "struggled" in years when he's had to break in a new starting QB). Colt McCoy graduated last year so his QB is new this year, so I expected Texas to lose some games.

2010: 3-1 (starting sophomore QB never started a game in college before the season, backup QBs are true freshmen)
2009: 13-1 (won conference, starting QB hurt early in national title game)
2008: 12-1 (won Fiesta Bowl vs. Ohio State)
    2007: 10-3
2006: 10-3 (Vince Young left a year early for the NFL, Colt McCoy started as a freshman)
2005: 13-0 (won national championship vs. USC)
2004: 11-1 (won Rose Bowl vs. Michigan)
    2003: 10-3 (Vince Young's freshman year)
    2002: 11-2
    2001: 11-2

Even the most bandwagon, critical UH fan would happily take those round of years and would give the coaches a pass if the team was "only" 3-1 like Texas is this year.

The MWC's Commissioner admitted that they invited Fresno State and Nevada in response for the WAC trying to take BYU. Note that the MWC is talking about how there is only room for the Pac-10 and one other D-IA conference...so, they want the WAC to go away.

Thompson looks at the college football landscape in the West and sees room for two conferences - the mighty Pac-10 and one other.

The WAC tried to solidify its future by swiping BYU from the Mountain West.

The Mountain West countered by grabbing Nevada and Fresno State - short-circuiting the WAC's secretive BYU "Project" and reaffirming the Mountain West's position as the region's No. 2 conference.

The MWC admits that they have been talking with C-USA to arrange some type of MWC vs. C-USA playoff game for an AQ spot each year.

So how realistic is an interconference championship game?

"Two things come into play. One, you have to get something to play for from a BCS perspective. And there have been no presentations. ... There was lunch. We have a couple presidents from both sides that will continue to discuss it. And the other side is it's going to take NCAA legislative relief or else you're only going to play 11 games and count that as your 12th and that's probably not going to happen."

I had said long ago that the MWC was out to get rid of the WAC. MWC is so arrogant, I guess they feel that the rest of the teams on the west coast should just drop football or move down to DII.

  334. Pomai:

The funny thing is is that the BcS teams will not give up anything that dose not give them more $$$$. So does the MWC really bring in more $$$ to the BcS?

  335. Garret:

    Pomai,

The MWC brings higher TV ratings in BCS bowls than the Big East. A MWC/C-USA play-in game winner would probably bring more $$$ to the BCS system than the Big East winner.

The MWC isn't being arrogant--the WAC was trying to *destroy* the MWC. That was clear in the e-mails between Benson and Utah State. The WAC tried to destroy the MWC and the MWC responded to insure its survival. In this case I think you have to blame the WAC for Fresno and Nevada's invitations. Your put-downs of the MWC are wrong in this case, in my opinion.

  336. Garret:

    Feature article on Sol "Aluminum".

Even during one of his most shining moments as a pro football player, Solomon “Aluminum” gets his name butchered by broadcasters and p.a. announcers.

And reporters still require spell check to get it right.

“On, that’s standard,” says Aluminum, a.k.a. Elimimian, the Nigerian-born middle linebacker for the B.C. Lions. “My name has been slaughtered since I started playing football. So I don’t mind that. It’s one of those things where you take the good with the bad.”

    http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/Soloman+Aluminum+shines+Lions+defence/3600196/story.html

  337. rage777:

I agree with Garret. As much as I hate the MWC, this is ALL Benson's fault. I didn't think we should have taken BYU from the beginning, but that's water under the bridge now. I think the only way UH should stay in the WAC is if they get rid of Benson. Sure he has done some really good things for UH, but he has pretty much destroyed the WAC and encourages the WAC to be a stepping stone conference. He should make the conference stronger, not individual teams.

  338. Garret:

    rage777,

It wasn't just going after BYU. Benson directly contacted both UNLV and SDSU to try to get them to leave the MWC for the WAC.

If you read the e-mails between Benson and Utah State, they were gloating about how they were going to kill the MWC and make BSU beg to come back to the WAC. They gloated about making BSU pay to re-join the WAC.

Benson even contacted UTEP about trying to have them leave C-USA to join the WAC after they cut out the heart of the MWC. Remember, the C-USA is credited for telling the MWC about the WAC's plan to destroy them.

I have attempted a variety of weight loss diet programs with varying levels of achievement. I really think that the excessive protein diet programs like the Atkins food plan can work well for some people, however I don't think you should keep on them for too long, as digesting that much protein might place a lot of burden onto your body. I now days keep on the zone weight loss program since this seems to be well balanced and works well for me.

  341. Garret:

    Pomai,

If you read the article I linked to above, you'll see that the BCS wants to add another BCS bowl (the Cotton Bowl played at the Cowboys Stadium). That means they will need another BCS conference...the MWC is the strongest non-AQ school and the BCS would get rid of a lot of political pressure if they added that BCS bowl and made the MWC an AQ conference.

That would be more money for all BCS schools...especially because there would be another BCS bowl spot (for an at-large team playing in the Cotton Bowl against the MWC champ). The Cotton Bowl is offering a lot of money to entice the BCS and TV will pay for that game.

The BCS might need the MWC just for inventory of games.

  342. Garret:

I don't call the MWC arrogant for doing to the WAC what the WAC tried to do to them. It isn't arrogance--Thompson is just better at his job than Benson.

  343. CoolEthan:

    Hey Garret-
Hope to see the Cotton Bowl come back into popularity when it was part of the basic group of Rose, Orange, Cotton & Sugar.

Waiting to hear of new title names like Capt. Crunch, Lucky Charms, Frakenberry and Count Chocula bowl. ( Since all the mkt now is targeting the younger generation.

  344. CoolEthan:

Anything that is played in the new Cowboys stadium has the potential of becoming a hit.

  345. Garret:

    CoolEthan,

The biggest problem for the Cotton Bowl was that they played in an outdoor stadium and the weather in Dallas in January could be horrible. However, the Cotton Bowl game has solved this by moving the bowl game from the Cotton Bowl to the Cowboys Stadium--an indoors stadium.

It will be weird for the "Cotton Bowl" to not be played in the Cotton Bowl. But stadiums with tons of luxury boxes and other amenities make tons of money more than other stadiums.

I've seen a good proposal posted on the blog a couple of times about having a season-opening double-header at Aloha Stadium to get an extra week for the season. Trouble is, Aloha Stadium doesn't have the luxury boxes and seating capability that NFL-type stadiums have...so, if the NCAA wanted to approve a special season-opening game, they would put it in an NFL-type stadium in a major TV market instead of Hawaii.

  346. CoolEthan:

Yes, great idea for double header cfb/nfl. Haven't thought of that before.
and yes again, the luxury boxes and other elite accomodations need to be in place.

Watching the Wyoming/Air Force game last week at Laramie, they showed a segment of the new luxury suites at their stadium. pretty darn sweet, and even sweeter when November rolls in to wyoming that time of year.

  347. LizKauai (iPad):

    Aloha Kakahiaka!
    Another day closer to Saturday!

  348. d1島:

    Great Morning All!

Sad to hear about Jordan Gomes' scholarship. Was there difficulty with the availability of engineering classes for him?

Hopefully Lametrius Davis' head will be in the game this week.

    Same with Kamalu Umu....

...so much of the game performance is "mental"

    Come on Warriors!

    IS IT SATURDAY YET???

  349. d1島:

No put away the umbrellas yet.

    Have a terrific day!

    HiHo....

  350. Garret:

    d1shima,

Gomes has completed 2 years at UH, and in the first 2 years engineering students mainly take core classes from a variety of departments. However, it seems that Gomes did *not* take those classes and instead has taken mostly Hawaiian Studies classes. The only way he could have significantly more Hawaiian Studies classes instead of classes that apply to Engineering is to avoid taking the math/science classes required for Engineering students.

So, he got a scholarship from the Engineering department but he wasn't taking classes that applied to engineering degrees. When you consider that Engineering students take the standard English/History/Humanities classes in their first 2 years, and those classes apply to Hawaiian Studies also, the classes he has to have skipped are all the technical classes.

  351. Garret:

I'm on the blog a lot today because starting tonight I'll be off the blog for 10 days. My mother-in-law comes tonight and my wife's aunt, uncle, and cousin will also be staying with us next week.

  352. rage777:

This doesn't make sense to me:

"I'm giving up my tuition to play football," Gomes acknowledged.

He didn't have to give up his tuition to play football, he just had to take Engineering classes. Unless he is saying that the Engineering classes were to hard to study for AND play football at the same time. But then he said that he still plans on taking the required Engineering classes, which doesn't make sense.

How do you get an Engineering scholarship in the first place. You must be one smart person to get one of those.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  491. perlengkapan bayi:

A lot of people are asking this question. The standard answer is to quell unemployment in the auto industry and related businesses. It depends on who you believe as to how large a number of people will become jobless should the automakers fail. Some say vendors and suppliers would be affected, transportation would feel an impact, and the nation would be dependent on foreign manufacturer's to make military vehicles. The other question is how many other businesses made bad management decisions by only selling their product or service to the automakers. If your business profits are linked to providing products or services to only one industry, maybe that model needs some evaluation. That being said, those businesses would definitely be at risk of failing right along with the automakers which would add to the number that become unemployed should they fail. Also, cities and states are very concerned about the auto industry failing. They receive tax dollars from them and for some, those dollars comprise a hefty percentage of their operating budgets. In states like mine, CA our unemployment fund is close to insolvency. That means if there is a huge influx of people filing for unemployment as a result of losing their job related to the auto industry, we will not have the money in our unemployment fund to pay their benefits. But, in the end, if your job is not related to the auto industry, your state is not reliant upon taxes paid either by the workers, dealers, plants or related business, you will probably only be affected to the extent that you hear your grandchildren complaining about the high taxes they are paying toward our generation's bailouts.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate.
