A mountain Dew commits to UH

December 9th, 2010
By Stephen Tsai

Ben Dew, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound offensive lineman from New Zealand, will be joining the Warriors in January.

Dew actually won't be going on scholarship until July, but he will be taking UH classes during the 2011 spring semester. Dew's sister, Rebecca, is a member of the Rainbow Wahine basketball team.

Dew was born in Florida, and has lived in Tennessee, New Zealand and, for a year, in Hawaii. He played for Word of Life Academy in 2009 before moving to New Zealand, where his father is a missionary. He caught UH's attention when he participated in the Big Man's Camp for linemen in 2009.

Only video I could find was this one. Dew is the big guard: Dew.

Warriorinsider.com sends us this photo of Miah Ostrowski, who will be joining the UH basketball team after the Hawaii Bowl.

In Manoa yesterday:

• The football team went through early-morning running. Another running session is scheduled for tomorrow. With finals next week, and the team having missed 20 school days because of travel, this has been a much-needed time to catch up on projects.

• Candidates for the soccer head coaching job were interviewed yesterday. An announcement is expected shortly.

The lovely and brilliant Kortney Kikiloi-Borthwick has selected d1島 as the winner of the WAC championship football T-shirt.

OK, we've got another T-shirt to give away. To enter, please post: I'm starvin' for football.

Kortney picks a winner tonight.

  20. Stephen Tsai:

I have not seen any video on Mr. Dew.
He only played football for a year.

  21. Pride.:

I thought I was going senile. I'm glad that I am not. I wondered what happened to that third guy. Saw a WOL practice one day at the Waterfront park in 2009. Remember the head coach talking about three juniors who were going to be sure-fire division one recruits down the line. Remembered Paulay Asiata and Juda Parker, but I knew that there was one more. I remembered what he looked like too. Not as big as Asiata, but bigger than Parker. I've been combing rosters to see where he ended up. Glad to see that he will be a Warrior. Hopefully, all three kids can play together for the Warriors. I believe that their former coach still helps Barret Awai with the Warrior football team's bible studies and pre-game prayer.

  22. Pcwarrior:

Thank you Mr Pride, I was going to ask for an interview with Mr Onosai regarding Mr Dew

  23. ai-eee-soos:

    Welcome aboard, Ben Dew.

In the film clip, all the guys look big.

Hope more of them "sign up".

  24. LizKauai -iPad:

    Nitey nite!

  25. Pride.:

If I remember Ben Dew correctly, think Austin Hansen. But I don't think Dew is done growing. He might end up looking somewhat like Adrian Thomas.

  26. Pride.:

Remember watching an off season workout when Greg Alexander and Brent Rausch were entering their first season in 2007. I recall a few significant things about that day. I predicted that Rausch would be the atarting quarterback. And also predicted that Steele Jantz would be the next Colt Brennan.

Well that proves that I don't know very much about football. Steele Jantz I believe is finishing up his sophmore season at CCSF. It appears that he isn't getting recruited by anybody. I'm shocked. I thought that he had a bright future ahead of him.

  27. bighilofan2:

Hawaii football community needs to understand what kind of game they will be in on Christmas eve. Tulsa is coming in to punch you in the mouth. All of these boys are from Oklahoma and Texas. They were all bypassed by Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M. They are driven and out to prove that not getting offered scholarships by the Big XII schools were big mistakes. The Tulsa coaching staff is young and hungry. They haven't been around the block like Mac and Mouse have. They are desperate to prove their worth. They are desperate to create their own reputations. They are dreaming every second of every day about different ways that they can beat Hawaii. They are like wild dogs backed up into a corner, ready to bite and scratch anything that gets in their way.

Are the Warriors ready? Do the Warriors know what kind of dogfight they are going to be in? The Conference USA is not an inferior conference. They are fighters and competitors. The Warriors have got to get their minds straight

At least I can tell you this much Price, brudda here is getting his mind straight.

  28. bighilofan2:

    Price=Pride

  29. Pride.:

I also remember telling Koakane at the 2008 spring game that someone better tell Bryant Moniz to transfer to either Portland State or Eastern Washington. He was the best QB on the field that day but he was never going to see any playing time at the University of Hawaii. He would be an All American at an FCS school.

Okay, there you go. I'm willing to admit when I am wrong.

  30. Pride.:

Bring your helmet BHF2, we are putting you in the game.

  31. al:

yup, i remember you telling me about the three d1 prospects at wol. always meant to ask you who that other guy was.

be nice if his ex-teammates came along. they could be first and last trio to represent wol and honor their ex-coach.

    al,

Too bad about Anthony Salter. When we were recruiting him, I visited one of his social networking sites. Do you remember that I was so alarmed by what I saw and read that I e-mailed Coach Gib about it? It looks like my concerns were justified after all. Too bad. I wish Salter and Coleman the best.

  38. al:

was dew here at the last game?

  44. Pride.:

Eventually, you want to get it to a point where your interior linemen are big. Everybody else is built for speed. Speed everywhere. Offense, defense, and special teams, all built for speed. Georgia defense in 2007 was built for speed.

This has been running through my mind ever since I heard the announcement during our UNLV game. Their QB tries to do everything (rush and pass). Their next leading rusher is a WR, who also is tops in the country on returns and all-purpose yards. Their team quite literally has nothing to lose, while our final ranking could disappear in thin air. They are more than capable to pull off this upset. And, my biggest concern of all... they run their no-huddle to perfection, getting plays off at an average of 10 seconds after the ball has been placed. We know about that no-huddle stuff... we just better be prepared for it.

  54. wafan:

  58. WOW !:

    Big West Meeting

Only news I found so far this morning.Very vague, writer dosen't seem to know much about what happened.

    * No decisions made in Big West expansion talks.

    * Calls to Big West commissioner Dennis Farrell were not immediately returned as of 11:30 p.m.

unclear whether a vote via teleconference among the board members was conducted.

  59. Pomai:

BWC = Those who say it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it.

  60. WOW !:

One should ignore rumors on other message boards that provide no links to a credible source.

  61. WOW !:

SA is really dropping the ball on this one.The Big West move is big stuff for us. They seemed to have plenty of sources and contacts just a week ago now all of a sudden it seems like they're all on vacation.

  62. mctruck:

Seems mighty strange with these BWC manueverings..hush,hush,stuff??? and wht's the deal with our own UH administration's hush, hush, on the subject???

Lets go out there and make a positive difference in people's lives during this holiday season! A simple, "Howzit!" handshake or just a nice big warm hug will do.

  72. WOW !:

According to Dave Reardon on WSN another sports forum thread concerning BW meeting.

"Someone close to this situation told me early today that there was not necessarily going to be any news coming out of this regarding UH. It was their regularly scheduled meeting. This person also told me there is no reason for UH fans to panic."

  77. d1島:

Have a terrific day erryboddy! Drive slow, arrive alive!

    HiHo....

  78. WOW !:

How many of you have been to New Zealand ? Having vacationed there several times I highly recommend that you visit this beautiful country at least once before you die.

  79. HawaiiMongoose:

Re #72, it sounds to me like "someone close to this situation" is putting the best spin they can on a worrisome turn of events. What we do know for sure is that after spending all day yesterday discussing expansion, there was no decision by the Big West to invite UH. Since an invitation was supposedly a slam dunk, that can't be interpreted as anything but a step backward.

  80. kawika49:

    congrats d1島

  81. HawaiiMongoose:

This was just posted by NMSUDad on the WAC board, who says the information comes from a meeting at Cal Poly (I assume by "travel cost" he means travel cost as subsidized by UH):

UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbra are preceived to be the biggest hurdle [to inviting UH to join the Big West] even with approval of adding UC San Diego.  UC Davis seems to be the swing vote.

The travel cost is nice, but the additional days of lost school days due to travel is very important to the UC's as they work on a 10 week tri-semester.

You can take the information as you wish, just trying to add some inside thoughts from only one school.

  82. Stephen Tsai:

    WOW!
There was no decision on expansion involving UH yesterday.
    Relax. It's a slam dunk.

  83. NYUH:

Lived in the land of the long white cloud for 4 years after graduating UH. Kia Ora to our new lineman.

  84. Stephen Tsai:

I wouldn't worry about UC Davis. Check where the UH president last worked.
My guess is that a scheduling approach similar to the one used by the MPSF will be enacted. That would mean there would be home-and-home games between California schools. In games involving Hawaii, for example, two will be played here one year and two at a California school the next year. That maximizes each trip.

  85. Stephen Tsai:

    Re: Dew.
Going back to Jones' staff, UH is very good at scouting and developing talent. That's why the walk-on program has been successful.
Dew is going to be a good one.
And the Warriors' starting offensive tackles of the future, both neighbor island guys and under-recruited, are Sean Shigematsu and Jordan Loeffler.

  86. WOW !:

LOL NMSUDad . Fans from NMS are the most mis-informed people in the NCAA.

Also NMS,Idaho and USU fans are really really concerned about UH leaving the WAC so they'll get on rumor boards and say anything.

This is why I'm kinda upset with the lack of communication from the " Leadership Team". Silence does nothing but fuel speculation and create rumors.

In addition thanks to Stephen and Dave for something encouraging from a reliable source.

  87. Stephen Tsai:

This year, UH changed its strategy. It identified the talent early, made under-the-radar scouting, but did not offer scholarships during the spring or summer.
Apparently, one of the discussions went like this: What's the point in offering in May? With limited amount of time and resources to recruit, that only alerts other schools to unheralded prospects.
UCLA, Washington and SMU are considered schools that peruse UH's recruiting lists.

  88. Bstunna2002:

I think people are getting to worried over this conference realignment thing...I think no announcement has been made because MWC meets this Friday is it a coincidence that MWC and the BW meet in the same week I doubt it...It's more a matter of MWC getting to make a formal announcement about the invite than anything else...Any chance to get Media attention is good for mid major conferences so expect to see the official invite Fri or Sat...

  89. Stephen Tsai:

    WOW:
There are a couple of levels at each conference, so while the "details" might not seem like a big deal, it can be time consuming. For instance: the ADs of the Big West might agree that they will allow UH in if it gives each school five surfboards and 100 plate lunches each year. And the CEOs (presidents/chancellors) will say, hey, make that 10 surfboards and 150 plate lunches, and so there has to be more dialogue. Will the deal fall apart? Not likely over surfboard, plate lunches or even chocolate macs. But that's why the lack of announcements over the first of a few meetings shouldn't be a panic thing.
    Relax, people.

  90. Stephen Tsai:

It's just like how some were getting all worried about recruiting.
Did they think UH decided not to recruit this year?
    Again, relax.

  91. Stephen Tsai:

Hmmm. Maybe we need another contest as a diversion. I'll get back on that one.

  92. al:

e ku'u morning dew...the future oline will be from new zealand and australia. to go along with the other pacific islanders of course. that would make for a nice write down the road.

  93. jm2375:

    darn predictive typing!
    Congrats d1!

  94. NCAA:

    Mr. WOW !,

    You write so familiar.

Another commit! Any huge d-lineman committing soon?

  95. al:

yah, take it easy...its a done deal.

  96. al:

btw, stephen i've a great prize for the hawaii bowl week. i'll tell you about it later today. i have to go to the land of pordagee sausage.

  97. NCAA:

    Mr. al,

    You're going to Portugal?

  98. Buffoman:

Me? I'm worried that we may not be fully prepared in the Hawaii Bowl to address our past difficulties in d-ing up properly against a hurry up, no huddle, quick set offense. I hope that the boys/men can delay the holiday spirit until after the Bowl and go Ba__s to the wall in conditioning and preparing to out physical, out speed prepare and out play Tulsa.

We cannot have another 2008 Bowl performance repeat as that was a national embarrassment. We've had one against BSU and cannot afford another.

  99. jm2375:

ST - #87 - so UCLA is known to "peruse" (and poach) UH recruits? So, why they so sked to play UH? They don't buy into this whole thing that any Pac-10(2) will beat any mid-major team any day?

*crosses UCLA off list of potential colleges for Screecher #1*

  100. Michigan Warrior:

They had their meeting... they didn't announce "NO"... so I'm not panicking. Just waiting for the back and forth details to be polished before finalizing. Similar to our recruiting approach now, I'm happy with our Leadership Team, Coaches, and players. And as this year's team has shown, we're in pretty good hands.
Patiently waiting may be difficult, but we got some good people looking out for the welfare of our whole UH system. I'm good with that.

By the way, did you guys catch that new show, "The Sing-Off"? I like the format, but two of the three judges are kinda weak, and the host leaves much to be desired. Just hope they'll get better at their respective roles.

  101. Michigan Warrior:

#92... Thanks, Al! Now that song is going round and round in my head!!!

  102. Glenn:

Thank you ST for explaining the strategy. Makes sense. Just like playing poker.

  103. NCAA:

If local recruits get lured away then that is their loss. Go young man, travel across the Pacific and let your family and friends fly out to see your games or catch a glimpse on ESPN or youtube. Don't worry, there will be others to take your place. Warrior football will survive.

  104. Stephen Tsai:

The City of Phoenix Web site notes that Phoenix has banked enough water for the next 50 years. I bring this up when people say how all of this rainy weather is a good thing for us. I think it just makes us wet.

  105. NCAA:

    Mr. Michigan Warrior,

I like Season II of Sing-Off. The judges are musicians and singers in their own right and have credentials. Of course I'm partial to Nicole, LOL. I can see why Judge Shawn is in love with the group Committed because they sound like Boyz II Men. I agree with you on the host. He hasn't been the same since Jessica.

  106. LizKauai (iPhone):

    Aloha Kakahiaka!
    Congrats, d1!
    You're welcome!

  107. Stephen Tsai:

    Buffoman:
    You're right about that.
The past three seasons ended with one-sided losses — to Georgia, Notre Dame and Wisconsin.
Don't think UH can afford to go into another offseason with a big loss.

  108. bigguyhawaii:

so what number is dew on the video?

  109. HawaiiMongoose:

ST, I'm very hopeful you're right about the Big West invitation still being a "slam dunk". I'm probably worried about nothing. But here are some facts to consider:

    - The concerns about adding Hawaii to the Big West seem to be emanating from the UC member schools, not the CSU member schools.

    - The alternative expansion candidate to UH is UC San Diego, a very large and academically strong peer of the UC schools, located in a very desirable market.

    - Just like UH, UC San Diego has a Division 1 men's volleyball team that would immediately help the Big West get an auto bid into the NCAA tournament.

    - UC San Diego's proposal to join the Big West and move the rest of its sports up from Division 2 to Division 1 exactly mirrors what UC Davis (the supposed swing vote) successfully did in 2003.

    - While it's true that M.R.C. Greenwood came from UC Davis, before that she was second in command of the UC system but abruptly resigned in 2005 after allegations emerged that she improperly hired a friend for a UC position (this according to the San Francisco Chronicle); it's hard to see someone who publicly embarrassed the UC system being an effective advocate for UH among the UC schools.

Again, I want to be wrong about this, but I see a pattern emerging and it's worrisome to me.

  110. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Good Morning Gangeez! :)

Nice recruiting this week. Welcome Mr. Dew!

Local recruits need to see it for what it is - UH is the place to be!

We usually take donations for the needy at the party and give it to something like the former Advertiser Fund or Foodbank but more details on that to follow.

  115. madeinhawaii:

Seems like just the other day we were so concerned about our recruiting...

    Then...

WR - Ellis Hendersen ... 6 feet 1 and 180, can run 40 yards in under 4.5 seconds.
WR - Trevor Davis ... 6-1, 165 pounds, and claims to run 40 yards in 4.45 seconds
WR - Cecil Doe (JC 3-2) ... 6-3, 212 and claims to run 40 yards in 4.38 seconds.
OL - Ben Dew ... a 6-foot-4, 300-pound offensive lineman from New Zealand

    AWESOME!

  130. Derek:

Very, very interesting couple of recruits so far. One, second cousin to Ricky Henderson. Two, second cousin to Donovan McNabb. Three, we get to drink "Mountain" Dew. Yeah, I hope Ben Dew is the straw that stirs our offensive line drink. Good size and measurables, but we don't know much about his playing ability. We haven't seen his tape, is he nasty? What about his speed and quickness. But, I have to trust Gordy Shaw. If Gordy Shaw said that we should get this guy then I trust him, because I believe he is a good judge of talent. When Shaw was at Minnesota, Minnesota always had a very good offensive line and he developed an All-America center, whose name escapes from me now. This All-America is now the center for the Denver Broncos. On top of that, we also have "Crocodile Dundee" Blake Muir from Australia. Then, we have Cecil "John" Doe from North Dakota St. He's another sleeper, but he's fast 4.38 and he's big for a WR 6'3". So far, you could say that there are a lot of stories you can talk about among these 5 some already.

When it's all said and done, we await Al's hoy grail!

  131. madeinhawaii:

  148. Pride.:

The Warriors finished the season ranked 19th in the BCS in 2007. The only time that they ended the season ranked in that particular poll. With the off-seasom turmoil and coaching chaneg the coaches were not able to take full advantage of that ranking form a recruiting standpoint. Now is the opportunity. We need to win to maintain our BCS ranking. It may make a difference when we go into the living rooms of these young athletes this winter and spring.

There's only Oregon, Stanford, and Utah who are ranked higher than we are that usually recruit in Hawaii. Stanford isn't big in Hawaii, especially recently with only Matt Masifilio signing in recent years. Florida State and Tennessee have poked there heads in the door, but not very often.

The rest of the posse are all ranked below us in the BCS poll. Actually they're not even ranked. That fact may help to swing one or two recruits our way.

Excellent point regarding recruiting... Now that we are back in the rankings, the Warrior program can point to all the successes that they've had with the RnS since 1999 and convincingly say that we have all the right coaches to continue the winning ways... Coach Mack can also point to and take some credit for 1999 and 2007 as he was the DC in those years, too. This is a good time to be a Warrior and a very promising time for our athletic programs.

Well, today, Wesley Snipes reported to a Federal Prison in Pennsylvania where he is supposed to stay there for 3 years for being convicted of unwilling to pay his taxes over a 10 year period. Ironically, on the day we was to report for prison he supoosedly paid $5 million in taxes. It reminded me of a football prospect a couple of years ago that was on Hawaii's radar by the name of Attrail Snipes, a WR. Anyway, Attrail Snipes committed to Kansas State and his past season he had a very decent season w/ something like 28 receptions for over 400 yards and 2 TDs. I may be mistaken, but I read something that Attrail Snipes is related to Wesley Snipes. Confirmation, please?

  185. A-House:

So, now we have "vibes" on a potentially lethal running back who is 6' 1" @ 190# who can shake and bake; a defensive back/safety who may be the future Mana Silva; and a lineman.

Where is 6' 8" 430# Taase in all this speculation? al, did he not commit to Arizona or Arizona St?

Whatever happens, it is great to see the increased level of talent who are considering or have committed to being a Warrior for we will need all of this and more to be very successful in whatever conference UH ends up. Also, if UH qulaifies for a post season bowl game, the talent across the line will be just a good or better. And, this is where "heart" comes in - like the song, "you've gotta have heart, miles and miles of heart".

It was great to read about the 4 recent commits that UH had--receiver was a need area for recruiting and a team can never have enough OL recruits with the size that Dew has. The positive mentions by Onosai and Pride have me really looking forward to seeing how Dew progresses as a Warrior.

  207. Garret:

The Warriors finished the season ranked 19th in the BCS in 2007. The only time that they ended the season ranked in that particular poll. We need to win to maintain our BCS ranking. It may make a difference when we go into the living rooms of these young athletes this winter and spring.

    Pride.,

The final BCS ranking happens *before* the bowls start. UH's final BCS standing in 2007 was #10. UH's final BCS standing in 2010 is #24. So, UH earned major points for the MWC (in the 2010-2013 evaluation period) by being ranked in the top 25 in the final BCS standing.

Recruits don't care about BCS rankings, they care about the AP or Coaches poll. However, the BCS evaluation period only cares about the ranking *before* the bowls begin.

  208. Garret:

I found it interesting that the BCS has just *1* full-time employee and 2 part-time workers and is run out of someone's home.

There is no towering corporate office. Its notorious computers aren’t located in some guarded, all-white room in Langley, Virginia. In fact, according to executive director Bill Hancock, for all its control over big-time college football, it’s hard to even call the BCS a governing body. “Some people think we’re this evil corporation in charge of college football,” he says, “but that’s just not the case.”

Despite its cultural impact, the BCS is tiny. It staffs just three people: Hancock and two part-time office assistants. And it’s headquartered out of the director’s suburban Kansas City home. “I don’t give out my address,” he says with a laugh, “because I don’t want someone egging my house.”

  216. A-House:

    Garret:

your spill about the BCS - what was described may be "small", but the impact it has on college football ih huge.

one must wonder how much influence is projected by the "BCS conferences" on the 3 employees - suppose it is easy to say, when the director does not agree with the pressure, to SHOVE IT!!!!!!!

  217. Stephen Tsai:

    Garret:
When I first started at The Advertiser a hundred years ago, I was assigned the OIA East.
I always thought there was a huge OIA building, with a Roosevelt room and a Kahuku room, etc.
Then they had handed me a stack of blank stat sheets. That's when I realized: I was the OIA East.
Spent the next few years keeping the football stats and attending ILH basketball quadrupleheaders at the Blaisdell and track meets in the rain. And Samoan banquets. For some reason, I was assigned the Samoan beat.
So, yeah, sounds like the BCS is appropriately staffed.

  218. A-House:

  221. d1島:

However, the BCS evaluation period only cares about the ranking *before* the bowls begin.

Imagine if Army or Navy were NC contenders.

  222. Garret:

    ST,

Funny story about the OIA East!

Yes, people think that the BCS is some big organization that is running things, but really the BCS just has a spokesman that is kind of like a conference commissioner...though Karl Benson seems to have a far bigger staff than the BCS. The individual conferences make their own deals and money grabs and the BCS just tries to come up with a system that is better than what they had before--they have made so many changes to the system over the years.

One interesting thing is that after TCU goes to the Big East that the MWC will either be an AQ conference or will get their champion in a BCS game even if the team has 1 loss. If TCU was already in the Big East, BSU would be going to a BCS bowl game this year instead of playing in the Vegas Bowl.

  223. Garret:

    d1shima,

I think that the BCS standings will be updated after the Army-Navy game, but it really won't change much. UH will gain a tiny amount if Army wins and will lose a tiny amount if Navy wins, but I don't think it will change the placement.

The final BCS standings should occur after the Army-Navy game. But from looking at the standings it looks like UH's final spot will be #24.

I don't think that I saw it posted that Karl Benson apparently tried to get Big 12 teams to join the WAC.

WAC officials approached select teams in the Big 12 (which is down to 10 teams for next year) about joining forces but were politely rebuffed. Several of those same Big 12 teams are now being courted by the Big East (Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State), which apparently wants to become the first 24-team conference in collegiate history. San Jose State is waiting to see what happens with the WAC before making any moves.

  238. d1島:

    Garret,

Actually, I think the rankings are final regardless of the Army-Navy game.

I was just saying, "imagine if" one was a NC contender....

but with both teams scheduling Notre Dame and AQ conference teams like Rutgers, Maryland, Duke and Wake Forest if one of them has a really successful season and gets in the Top Ten it might really become relavant.

  239. d1島:

  241. jm2375:

Curt - #236 - according to BC, they'll lose 1 APR pt per player, but it takes 4 pts to lose a schollie, so hopefully, there won't be too much damage. How much "progress" can one make in a semester?

  242. Stephen Tsai:

    Curt:
UH will take an APR hit, especially because they will end up leaving after only one semester. Better hope they are in good academic standing, or it counts as a 2-point loss each.

  243. kev-1:

    d1 . . . i like the "investment" comment. good stuff!

If you were a talented football player who really wanted to play for school X because you really like the coach, and one day your dad tells you, "no . . . you're going to school Z," you wouldn't ask why? I know there is tons of speculation out there, but I just don't see how this really went on with out scam, I mean Cam Newton having any knowledge of it.

So, let me apologize now for taking a shot at a student athlete, but the kid needs a shot of humility. He was running around the sidelines with his hands in the air and a smirk on his face at the beginning of the 4th quarter of the SEC championship game. Excuse me, but there are still kids out on the field playing their hearts out, and you are in full on celebration mode? Not to mention the fact that he was riding around on the shoulders of his teammates before the game was over too.

I don't agree that he is a victim in this whole thing. Maybe it was his father, but he had to know. The hardest part for me to swallow is the love affair that the media and the NCAA has for this kid. Sure he is a gifted football player, but VERY arrogant in my opinion.

  244. kev-1:

sorry, I don't know where that came from

  245. Stephen Tsai:

Also, I think it might be a revolving deduction, so it's not like UH can clear their books right away. The best thing would be for both to pursue pro careers.

  246. mctruck:

Benson flirting with some big12 schools????, yeah, right....I can see what he envisions for the future of the WAC; it'll be more centralized east of the rockies, for sure. Maybe the conference name will change to something like, MLC???,(midland conference). and I got dibs on that nick name, bwaaaaahahaha!!

  247. Kris:

    I'm starvin' for football baby!

  248. kev-1:

I can just see Benson in that meeting with all the commissioners when he addressed the Big 12 about merging with the WAC. Wait, you can still hear them laughing! Benson is a joke.

  249. Stephen Tsai:

Our heroes are indeed smaller than we think.
Before the Internet age and blogs, there was a guy who used to do the NFL draft previews out of his Brooklyn apartment. Apparently one of his bathtubs was filled with notebooks. Everything was handwritten; no computer, no typewriter. I remember calling him a couple of times for opinions on UH players.
Most amazing thing was he never attended any college games. Everything was off TV or by interviewing coaches, etc.

  250. Stephen Tsai:

When I was covering basketball, there was a JC recruiting expert out of Texas. He didn't even have a home phone. I used to have to call a pay phone in a greasy spoon at a pre-set time. He used to mail me hand-written lists ranking the top JC players across the country. I think he helped lead me to Cliff Beaubrun.

  251. mctruck:

Talk about love affair from media and BCS/NCAA?, exactly what I was thinking???, how could he not have known what his father was scheming??, it's not like his father would attempt doing this scam with getting a go-ahead wink from sonny-boy(CAMMY).
He's a good looking kid, but the 1st time I saw his mug shot....I sorta said to myself.....self, don't he look like that kid who beat up on his girlfriend,(Brianna)?? just sayin.

  252. kev-1:

Newton has a lot going for him. He is a phenomenal athlete. I just don't like it when people assume other people are stupid.

  253. NCAA:

In time, one will pay for their consequences, whether in the present, future, or afterlife, there is no expiration date.

  254. mctruck:

Somebody better check his I.D>, maybe assah-guy!!

  255. NCAA:

A certain poster makes me assume he is volleyball stupid. Please forgive me Mr. kev-1.

  256. mctruck:

So, ST.......how do you connect wit da BW-commish???, does he sent you msg.s in unusual ways other than conventional-o-what??? spill da beans brah!!!

  257. madeinhawaii:

Too bad the 13th game exemption doesn't apply to any team playing a game against any other team in Hawaii. They they could have a High AQ vs a low BCS bowl qualifier game in Hawaii with the winner going to a BCS Bowl.

  258. LizKauai -iPad:

    Scam Newton, eh?
Never mind. Next year we campaign Bryant like no nuff - let the records be the judge.

I have an extra General Adminission (sit anywhere) ticket for the two day games at the Diamond Head Classic on Wednesday, December 22. DrDoc has to work and will be joining me for the two evening games which will require a separate (designated seating) ticket.

I am not sure yet about the first two games on December 23 - there's a company luncheon DD has to attend that day - and he's bringing me as well - but I am not sure if we will be through in time to get up to The Stan in time for the second game that day.

Newton won all the major awards today and will win the Heisman on Saturday. No question he was the best player, by far. But to me, I will always be skeptical of his involvement in the money of hire by Auburn. Don't kid yourself, this is going on and have been going on in the Southeast Conference for a long time. And at other places too. It is naive to believe that he went to Auburn without getting money from him/and or his father. Maybe not now, but later on something will show up and the real story will come out. His past transgressions at Florida would lead me to some conclusions he is not pure. Time will tell. But based on what I saw him on the field he was unbelievable, a remarkable combination of running, passing, decision-makinng, and size. On top of that, he didn't get hurt. That is hard to do.

  292. wafan:

  299. Kazz:

Well, let's hope Mr. Youngman is more accurate about this than his previous tweet where he believed it would be Boise State and Oregon for the BCS National Championship.

Good grief, even I SCREAMED from the beginning of the season that an undefeated BSU team ranked in the Top 5 would NEVER get a shot at that BCS Championship Trust.

  310. OldDiver:

I was reading some old sports and found this:

Blue Hen: You're exactly right...it's everywhere, but can you 'deny' that the concentration of academic fraud and dumb phony student-athletes is higher in the SEC than anywhere else?

MasterBevo: I don't think it's anymore prevalent in the SEC.....
