'Shed a tear'

December 27th, 2010
By

In the late 1980s, Riley Wallace, then the UH basketball coach, had his version of the gray-shirt program. At the start of training, each player was issued a plain gray shirt. The reward of good practices was to be awarded a "Hawaii" basketball jersey. Chris Gaines always was one of the first to earn a promotion.

Back then, one of the drills was a one-on-one, no-rules, full-court game. Joe Hudson, a transfer from Alabama, was a quite confident guard. He once brought a league championship ring to practice. He also requested going one-on-one against Gaines. According to former UH basketball player David Hallums, Hudson told teammates that he would "bring the wood." But Gaines, an accurate outside shooter who also was quite athletic, dunked on Hudson.

And that was Gaines, who worked hard and hushed critics with deeds instead of words.

He was a nice guy who didn't fade in the spotlight. During games, he always finished fastbreaks with lay-ins. After games, whether a victory or a tough loss, he would be the first to answer questions.

Gaines died Christmas Day in Orlando.

When Hallums, now a police officer, learned of Gaines' death, he pulled his car to the side and "shed a tear."

He recalled "Goo," his former roommate who earned the nicknamed either because it rhymed with his hometown of Waterloo or from the Eddie Murphy skit "Goonie Goo Goo."

"He was a great friend," Hallums said. "He was one of the funniest guys. I shed a tear. That's how much he meant to me."

The football season is over, but it's a busy time for now-former Warriors with pro aspirations. Slotback Greg Salas and his family met with three agents yesterday; they will select one this week.

  10. Garret:

I think that UH will go 10-3 next season. I thought that UH would win 9 games this year, so hopefully they will exceed my expectations again.

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid:

I agree, Garret. It was a great season this year.

Next year, there will be many positives to build on and many challenges to meet Hopefully the next phase of the team's growth will be to win the big games more often than not.

We'll miss the seniors. A special bunch, those guys.

  16. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    al -

I was speaking in the metaphorical sense of course!

  17. chawan_cut:

i agree with garret, the schedule is favorable next year.

  23. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    chawan-

The NOAA link looks the way it used to during the fourty day rains the other year. Doesn't this storm look potentially bigger than what we've had so far this year?

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid:

What round will Salas go in, I wonder?

  25. wafan:

    Good morning!

  26. wafan:

Plate tectonics. i thought Hawai'i was moving to the WNW rather than NE.

From where did all this rain come? Dang!

  27. chawan_cut:

    dpk,
i wasn't home for most of that 40 day storm luckily.

  28. wafan:

Prayers and positive thoughts to the Gaines family.

    Guessing God needed another rainbow.

  29. wafan:

    C_C . . .

Were you in WA when we had our 100+ days of rain?

  30. Pride.:

  34. Michigan Warrior:

    Thanks, ST! Great Gaines story!

Good luck to our Warriors as they work towards yet another goal!

Holy smokes, C-C!!! That's one huge storm!!!

You guys stay warm and dry! Be safe on those roads... and watch the other drivers!

  35. NCAA:

I haven't seen it yet but I hope next season the Warriors have players with speed that make you go WOW! Zoom zoom!

  36. Darren:

#21. Based on everyone's predictions, the program looks to be going up...not down. Lot of pukas to fill, but there's a lot of talent in the stable to fill the pukas.

  37. chawan_cut:

i was somewhere. it was too long ago. i just know i wasn't here.

  38. Pride.:

    What is a Hammer?

That's hard to put into words? Might be better to tell you who were the hammers in the past? Vince Manuwai, Samson Satele, Mike Lafaele, David Maeva, Blane Gaison, Joe Onosai, Jesse Sapolu, La'anui Correa, Junior Tagoa'i, Nate Jackson, Alvis Satele, Chad Owens. As you can see, some Hammers speak softly but carry a big stick. Get the idea?

You are welcome to add names if you want to.

  39. Pride.:

#30 - That should be Matagisila Lefiti. Boy, he going hammer me!

  40. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Hary - Tuilau or Monico.

  41. Darren:

#30. Darius Bright. Or maybe it's Darien Bryant (maybe you know something we don't???)

  42. LizKauai \m/:

We had 40 days and 40 nites back in 06, I believe. Had to sandbag my house...

wafan, did you see the vehicles slipping, sliding and crashing? 12/19 in Spokane...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBXzrlo69BQ
    Lucky you stay Hawaii!

  43. NCAA:

The Warriors need more than two hammers. One hammer for 11 nails running around isn't going to do much over the course of construction.

  44. Pomai:

#30 Pride I don't think you have to worry about that.

  45. Derek:

People still steaming about the bowl loss. Get over it. People must have lost a lot of moneyh on the game. Facts are facts. You have to look at the talent level. Tulsa's talent level was just as good as Hawaii, if not a little better. The season's statistics showed that it would be a very close game, even tho Hawaii was favored by 10 to 11 points. The line even started at 13. One thing that concerned me about this game is the competition that they played. Tulsa beat Notre Dame at Notre Dame. Notre Dame beat USC at USC. And we lost to USC at home. Not to mention, Tulsa was hot coming in. They won their last 6 games in impressive fashion. So I'm not surprised we lost. I am disappointed that we didn't win also. It got out of hand because we made a ton of turnovers and a couple were taken to the house. It didn't help when Alex shanked a punt for 8 yards, our surest hands fumbled a punt and lost 3 starters due to being ineligible for the game. It is not the coaches fault. They don't make the turnovers. It's just one of those things that didn't go our way. Things will turnaround. I'm optimistic and I feel good about the future. If you said at the beginning of the season that we would end up the year at 10-4 you would say, great year. That's what I feel it is, a great year. When you win 10 games, it's a great year. Moniz that that the team is like cockroaches. On Xmas Eve he was right. Tulsa stomped on our Warriors and we went "spat". It should provide motivation to begin next season right now.

  46. Souljah:

We need 11 constant hammers putting down 1 "Nail in the Coffin"

  47. gigi-hawaii:

    Hi ST and Tsaikos!

Yeah, we had a really bad deluge just minutes ago and I had to close some windows. But no thunder and lightning yet.

Right now, it stopped raining. Very humid.

  48. gigi-hawaii:

    Liz,
I'm glad you'll be able to see CATS. It's a terrific musical. Just love those costumes and make up.

  49. gigi-hawaii:

I read Ferd's column and agree that Mack should be given an extension. But I doubt Mack would want his salary reduced to $650,000. Think that will happen???

  50. LizKauai \m/:

Looking to see our Kauai guys laying it down- Meatoga, Shigematsu, Matagiese and Estes.

    Hammer on!
    Go Warriors!

  51. Pomai:

I myself am not worried about a hammer, what concerns me is the maintenance supervisor who's job it is to maintain all the tools in the toolbox so that they are in top shape and ready to go at a moments notice.

  52. Old Diver:

    Great points Derek,

This ship is still afloat is isn't sinking anytime soon. I expect next year we will be again on full throttle, let's all hop on board.

  53. haawarrior:

Leonard Peters. Now that was someone who could lay the Hamma. Talk about game changer. Quit wasn't part of his vocabulary!

  54. Jeff:

#49 give Mack basically a take it or leave it offer $650K for his extension. It is very generous in these economic times. If he thinks he can do better elswhere he is free to leave. I just don't think other schools are going to banging on his door with more generous offers.

  55. Bigislandkurt:

A PAYCUT for Mack? I no think so.

Yes, the season ended with an unceremonious THUD, but with all that said, the football team still won games and made the department some $$$ this year. The football team will still carry the financial burden of the other UH sports. Those who think Mack should get an extension AND a paycut need to look at the bigger picture.

Personally, I just wouldn't disrespect Mack like that.

    BIK

  56. Bigislandkurt:

Salas about to get PAID! And Green too, possibly.

i hope that the "draft" board is employed.

  65. NCAA:

Of course you would want a hammer whose head will not fly off the handle. Bad for harmony in the toolbox.

  66. NCAA:

    Mr. al,

Six weeks is a long time. Then it extends till March.

  90. Pride.:

awww Pride. I not high maintenance...

  93. James:

#38 Jeris White, Gary Allen, Billy Stephens. So many more, hard to count. QB Blaine Gaison was about the best. He willed himself to win. He gave it all he got to lead the team to victories, making the impossible possible. He was one of a kind, a hammer. We got two hammers on this team, Corey Paredes (#41) and Mana Silva (#43). And another guy, Jordan Monico (#47). What is the common denominator? They play with abandon and with all their hearts. Can't wait until next season to see these guys in action. GO WARRIORS!

  94. d1島:

    8-11

  95. Slugger:

    jojo,

    dim sum...would be easy.

  96. Darren:

A "national pundit" would say that our program has not got back to the level of the previous coach's tenure. We need to beat some quality OOC opponents for that to happen. At this point in time, Washington State does not count as a quality OOC opponent.

  97. al:

d1...i'd say that after two mediocre years the warriors had a turn around season in 2010 and next year should at least match the ten wins of this past season albeit agains a wac conference that has not been of the same strength as in years past.

this does not necessarily mean that a contract extension should be awarded afterall the program had been in the national spotlight for at least two years prior to mack's taking over his first two years had us going backwards from the momentum gain of the 2007 season.

the overall record of mack displays a winning percentage thanks to this year and sits at 56%.

however, we have yet to win in the hawaii bowl or against the big opponents.

whereas, june brought the program back on to the front page and heightened it's existence, bringing not only renewed local interest but on the national front as well.

he won some big ones in the process. the run and shoot was the talk of town. his winning percentage of 65 % stands as one of the best records in uh history especially over a ten year period.

unfortunately for mack, he will forever be cast in june's tall shadow. he could breakaway from the dark by having back to back to back(mwc 1st season) ten win seasons. it is not something impossible because we should achieve the ten wins in 2011.

    ...nuff said

  98. Pride.:

#93 - A Hammer is an athlete who encourages others through his leadership and/or play, to perform beyond their own perceived capabilities. They are the ones who make big plays in big games. They are the ones who when a team is feeling down and uninspired, put the team on their backs and carry them to victory. That is what a hammer is. It isn't about hitting hard. It's about the guy who when he walks into a room, everyone knows that he is present. He commands attention, without being commanding. Blane Gaison is proabably the best example of that role.

  99. oh, oh, oh:

97 - no can count 2011. It is a projection only. Things look good, but no count until the crops are harvested and taken to market. I agree with the rest.

    hammer = satele, nate too

  100. Da Punchbowl Kid:

UH Administration has a "Hammer" on its team.

  101. oh, oh, oh:

umu was starting to play like a hammer

  102. al:

when it comes to mack's contract extension...i am sitting on the fence.

    on one hand,

one good year after two mediocre years does not mean a great future is ahead. the three year end losses put a hurt into the next year's marketing efforts and popularity of the program in all phases of it's business.

the impetus was lost especially this year.

think about it, what if we had beat notre dame. an 8-6 record with a bowl win over the irish would have made for a great way to sell a recruit, sponsor, or the mwc.

had we beat wisconsin we'd have a hawaii bowl invite and possibly another 8-6 record instead of a 6-7 record.

and this year, we might have been 11-3. we'd have kept our top 25 raniking and going in to 2011 we may have been rated at the outset. i am not going to list the pro's or con's you all know it.

    on the second hand,

one could say, well give him the extension now it will be cheaper this year then next year after we win 10+ games again. (and we should not expect less). an extension should come much more cheaply rnow rrather than next year.

any contract should have a lowered base salary with incentives. (some should be no problem to attain). and a buyout clause that won't hurt us so bad.

typically, three year contract's are extended after the second year. so shouldn't five year contracts be reviewed after the fourth year???

  105. al:

i'd say by pride.'s description, greg salas was a hammer in 2010.

  106. cocobean:

Mack deserves an extention. The details should be left to JD and Mack to work out. Not extending the contract can be used against Hawaii in recruiting.

  107. oh, oh, oh:

think about 2 years from now - do you want to have this HC sitting w/ a extended (multi-year) contract at age 68?

or should there be a plan in place to pass this program to younger, capable personnel? could be someone in-house for continuity

    that is my main question

this will impact recruiting - just when do you absorb the hit

  108. oh, oh, oh:

    pisa was a hammer

hammer is one tool in toolbox (team). also need a good carpenter and helpers, and building plan

if you want quick fix, a rock can work if needed. also glue gun

  109. Darren:

Shouldn't a head coach have some "hammer" characteristics? How was it possibly allowed to have our team booing the opponent's highlight film at the banquet. That was like the last straw in showing how seriously we took our opponent.

I know we took the game very seriously, but how serious did we take this opponent? That responsibility comes from the top.

But...if there's anything that Coach has shown over these last 3 years, it's the ability to learn and adjust. He will not say "We screwed up" (he seems to have an aversion to such statements), but I'd bet a plate lunch that we'd prepare very differently for a bowl game next year as compared to this year.

  111. oh, oh, oh:

  112. oh, oh, oh:

  113. d1島:

actually, there were some new coaching hires

  116. oh, oh, oh:

the shut mouth lesson wasn't learned until following WAC meeting - but was that enuff?

  117. Pomai:

It has been rumored that our team booed some kind of highlight reel of the Tulsa team, but where did this come from?? Did it really happen or not?

  118. Darren:

'08...like he said, they took the approach that they were just happy to be in a bowl game. Changed goal from "get to a bowl game" to "win a bowl game".

This year, tried to take a business like approach to the game and prepare like they do for any other game. Same number of practicies, meetings, etc.

But...bowl game not like any other game. You and your opponent have *weeks* not days to prepare. When it was said that it was like Tulsa "knew our offense"...well that shows how much Tulsa prepared as compared to any other Saturday game. Painful lessons that we all wish we didn't have to go through...but there is no doubt that there's an ongoing learning curve with this current tenure.

  119. AlaWai:

As we wind down 2010, I prefer to focus on the positives and focus on the "fixes" in the spring.
The Warriors brought home a WAC Championship! Who would have thought this in August?

Having an offensive production as successful as 2006-2007.

The big defensive turnaround in positive turnovers versus 2009.

Being able to watch, in my opinion the best receiver in UH history.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsqqmN-ffeY

I wish someone would compile a hightlight video of Greg Salas' career at Manoa.

Right now, time to feel good. Enjoy the season. Pray for Chris Gaines' family and remember his contributions to Rainbow Warrior history.

Any other feel good memories of 2010?

  120. Darren:

As TU marched into a Sheraton Waikiki Beach ballroom, the Golden Hurricane's highlight video was rolling. And Hawaii's team began booing right away.

For all out student-athletes sacrifice and endure, they deserve to be led down the path needed for academic and athletic success.

While our Warriors and Rainbow Wahine are young adults capable of making their own decisions, they are still in need in guidance and it's easy to get lost in the chaos that is the college life of social events, studies, and athletics.

They need that "hammer" to lay down the law and express urgency and focus when needed and even if the student-athletes already understands this, the HAMMER must lead by example.

I will never throw student-athletes under the bus, I never have and I never will, but heavily-paid grown adults in entrusted with heavy responsibilities to represent the program, institution, and state are fair game for criticism of their failures.

    The formula is simple:

Failures = decreasing mass support = less $$$ = negative impact on the student-athletes seeking academic and athletic support.

The weight of the success of the football program is measured by 18 other programs with hundreds and hundreds of other UH student-athletes, not to mention the 100 on the football team as well.

If the pressure to succeed seems too much for some, then you are not living in reality.

If the last six months of college athletic conference shuffling wasn't a RED FLAG for some, then they have NO CLUE about the urgency to maintain success and limit short-comings that are visible to a national audience.

Sure we're safe for the foreseeable future post 2011 in the Mountain West Conference, but if someone thinks we can rest on that is sadly mistaken.

We have to take care of ourselves and we need to be able to trust those that are paid to ensure our stability as a Division I athletic program.

    Good morning everyone!

Why is it called cattle calls?

NCAA -- like d1島 said, you gotta be there to see. Come to Maple Garden tomorrow. Another bit of 2007 Tsai-ko trivia...

Tsai-ko Cattle Call Size Chart (Does not apply to Tsai-kettes)
under 151 lbs = normal (more of a statistical thing)
    151- 170 lbs = Tsai-ko normal
    171 - 199 lbs = medium
    200 - 259 lbs = large
    260 - 325 lbs = larger
    325+ lbs = super

As a mid-range "large", I was the fourth smallest guy back then... :)

  124. Stephen Tsai:

Then again, I know folks were upset the first night when Tulsa showed up half an hour late, ate first, then left.

  125. Kazz:

Fans "booing" is one thing. Hell, I encourage it.

For players to be "booing", that is unacceptable, ESPECIALLY when you know it will spread in the media and further embarass the program.

Everything begins at the top. Where was the discipline here???

  126. Kazz:

  127. NCAA:

Warriors have the need for speed.

  128. Stephen Tsai:

From what I heard — and this is fourth hand — one of the ineligible players needed one class to earn a degree. But because of the six-credit bowl rule, he took a language class as an elective. He passed the mandatory class and earned his degree. Because he missed too many school days, he failed the language class. I understand he was given a chance to make up the work for the language class to earn a passing grade, but that would happen after the bowl game.

  129. d1島:

    Pomai,

And, if you believe the Golden Hurricane, it added up to one huge payback of sorts, too. What was supposed to have been a running play in the waning minutes became a 9-yard Kinne touchdown pass to Damaris Johnson with 1 minute, 16 seconds remaining because the pass option opened up, Kinne and Graham said.

Not that Kinne seemed nearly as sorry as his head coach about the turn of events. "Maybe," Kinne said pointedly, "they shouldn't have booed our highlight film at the banquet."

"That boosted us up," said TU running back Alex Singleton, who scored two touchdowns. "That fired us up. After that happened, I knew we were going to win."

  130. masteruke:

you young guys forgot some of the best ever at UH. Larry Cole, Levi Stanley, John Woodcock, Niko and Al Noga, Jesse Sapoulo, Raphael Cherry etc, etc. Only Levi didn't make it to the big show. But they all had one thing in common, they played the game with heart and soul and didn't need to talk shit during game time. Especially when you are losing as some of the UH guys were doing.

  131. NCAA:

    Mr. SteveM,

My planner has that day reserved.

  132. Darren:

If it was known that missing school days would lead to a failing grade, then the player should have never been allowed to take that class as an elective. Since it was known how many days of class the team would be missing with their travel schedule...hard to blame the player if this was the case.

  133. gigi-hawaii:

    ST,
that's awful. Reminds me of the semester I failed 3rd year French. What was my excuse? No talent for foreign languages though I spent countless hours in lab.

  134. Darren:

And if wasn't known that missing school days would lead to a failing grade, then someone should be responsible for finding out these things before player's class schedules are finalized.

  135. Stephen Tsai:

Yes, when I wasn't shopping or gambling, I was at practices and hotel lobbies, and noticed: This is a lot of missed school time. Twenty days is a lot of days.
I see charter flights coming out of this.

Tulsa's semester ended about a week earlier than UH's.
    Whatcha gonna do?

  139. d1島:

    *Off topic*

Should I be concerned about seeing HFD Rescue towing a boat thru my neighborhood...in Waipio?

  140. Darren:

On to good thoughts...I'm glad we have our two LBs coming back next year. Talk about playmakers. Lost in the bowl game debacle is Aaron Brown's punchout of the ball at the goal line...damn good play! Wasn't this guy a safety out of JC? Maybe he had more rover like responsibilities, but this would have to be his 1st year of steady LB duty. Expecting a lot out of this tandem next year.

So our base defense is a nickel package now? Haven't seen a steady 4-3 since USC (maybe because that was only game with pro set formation??).

  141. NCAA:

One can give all the excuses, reasons, and what-ifs, but the bottom line is Tulsa outplayed UH.

However, it is interesting to read post game opinions.

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win. Sun Tzu

  142. Stephen Tsai:

So, I get this e-mail from a guy who wants to know every detail of why a guy is ineligible.
So I tell him Austin Hansen, Brysen Ginlack and Rodney Bradley were ineligible because I asked them, and they said so. And I asked them why, and they said, they didn't want to talk about it.
So e-mail guy says that's "bogus" and the public has a right to know why they were ineligible. So I explain about privacy laws, and, well, can't just go up to UH and ask for their transcripts.
And this is another reason why it's a long offseason.

  143. Pride.:

  145. Stephen Tsai:

Tulsa gets points for the two pick-six plays and the bad punt. Rest is on the defense.

  155. Derek:

Stephen, if a guy finishes up taking one mandatory class and gets his degree, isn't what he came to college for? So what he didn't pass the elective. To me it's a moot point. I can see if the player is still working toward his degree, yeah I agree the rule should still be in effect for 6 credits in the semester. But, when you get your degree, to me that's it. There should be an exception in this case. Some of these NCAA rules don't make much sense and there ought to be some wiggle room. Didn't our compliance person talk to the NCAA about this and check if it's o.k.?

  156. mctruck:

offer one of those "bs" contract extensions for 2 years where we can buy him out for like $200K and give him a base salary of like $500,000 + incentives to bring it up to around $1M...The main reason for the contract being the buyout clause.

Not like there are 10 or even 1 college program out there dying to get their hands on him as a HC...maybe a DC though.

Just gotta make sure the base salary is like 20% higher than the average BCS level DC. And NO not including people like Monte Kiffin or Will Muschamp.

Main thing is the buy out clause....Main thing is the buy out clause...

  179. A-House:

Strategy - used by all military commanders - some do it better than others - some include principles from historical battles ( LTG George Patton was very good at this ).

If a current commander uses the startegy from the Iraqi invasion against North Korea or China, then it's amost a garan ball barran disaster!!! Do football coaches do the same?

Accuracy - some QBs, like Colty B, was very good; others not so good. As a tank platoon leader and company commander, we went to the firing range and fired live ammo at moving targets. Some "gunners" were very good; others not so good, but kept practicing until they reach standards acceptable by the Army. Firing the 105mm main gun on a moving M-60 tank is very difficult; espcially if got many up and down terrain. Yet, there was a time that the tank commander would stop the tank so the gunner can fire the main gun. We are talking micro-seconds. Is this any different, in principle, of a QB practicing on his own to improve his accuracy? In the movie Necessay Roughness, a "rouge QB" threw footballs at scarecrows in cornfields to hone his accuracy.

There are so many different ways to train during the off-season and coaches must to out, on their own time, to seek techinques to improve players strength and skills. One particular school, to strengthen upper body and arms and hands, uses large (2-3") ropes, attached to post or wall (10 - 12' long), with the player doing different motions - up and down, crossing, jump rope weaving, etc.

One evening, while on duty officer watch, several OCS student decided to "raid" the refrig of pies. I had them stand up against a wall with arms parrel to the ground, palms up, bent at the waist and toes on the ground and heels on the wall. Then I put a grain of salt in each palm and walked away. Came back 5 minutes later and only one was still up against the wall, profusely sweating and shaking with eyes blazing hatred. They never misbehaved again and on graduation day, one brand new 2LT came into my office, handed me a grain of salt, said, "thank you", shook my hand and walked away.

  188. Garret:

The good news is that UH at least doesn't have a losing record in the Hawaii Bowl. The bad news is that UH is 0-2 in the Hawaii Bowl under the current coach and 3-1 under the previous coach (plus, 1-0 in the Oahu Bowl under that coach).

The really bad news for the WAC is that the WAC has looked bad in the Hawaii bowl for some time:
    2010: Blowout loss to Tulsa
    2009: Blowout loss to SMU
2008: Blowout loss to Notre Dame
2007: Loss to East Carolina (notable because it was Boise State that lost)

If the Hawaii Bowl is the WAC's non-BCS bowl jewel, consistently the highest rated of the WAC's non-BCS bowls, then the WAC losing 4 years in a row is really bad for conference perception. At least UH gets to leave the WAC behind soon...

  189. Michigan Warrior:

Yep, you guys mentioned some great UH names. But one of the most inspirational to me was Michael Carter. That guy kept taking hits over and over... and while obviously hurt, he just had a way of rallying the troops to continue marching down the field, no matter what his physical ailments might be.

  190. Michigan Warrior:

#156... McTruck... I've often wondered, over the past several years, why we don't go to a mass-protection offense in certain situations. We've definitely got the big hitters who could fill in as Tight Ends and or Fullbacks, just for protection purposes. And we know at certain times, that the opposing defense will throw everything at us to prevent a critical first down, like what happened with about 8 minutes or so of this past bowl game. I was hoping we'd see some different stuff this year, since there was talk over summer of a Jumbo "Kilauea" "Elephant" Package. Never happened. Was good to see them dust off some option stuff once in a while, though.

  191. Garret:

UH doesn't have to worry about the former coach poaching any of their recruits. That school has 26 commits, including 1 4-star and 18 3-star recruits. The Pac-10 schools have also been filling up their recruiting classes also.

There are a lot of recruits out there who are looking for offers and I hope that the coaching staff gets the people they want. Recruits like John Hardy-Tuilau are studs that were under the radar and this coaching staff did an excellent job in getting him. Maybe the Riverside pipeline can be mined for more excellent recruits. Maybe some local recruits will switch from their current commits to UH. Wherever the recruits come from, UH needs to get the right players for their systems...

The good news is that UH does have a lot of talent, including some leaders this year (Paredes, Tuipulotu, Meatoga) returning. Returning the QB, DTs, top tackling LB, and other key players gives a lot of building blocks for next year. Tommy Heffernan will do his magic during the offseason to get the Warriors ready for next year.

  192. RedZone:

Hammer- Jeff Duva, Kelley McGill, Dane McArthur, Wilbert Haslip, Gary Allen, Ita Sataua,
Carl Kennybrew, Michael Carter, Tim BuchanonGarrett Gabriel, Scott Haneberg, Rich Miano, mike Tresler, Burton Coloma, Angel Velez and many many more.

  193. d1島:

    jmxxxx,

I not comparing to the Former Coach's last two years....just asking if the FB program is heading up or down after 3 seasons with Mack? That's his entire tenure; that's why I include the Former Coach's entire record for comparison.

  194. G (China):

It doesn't make sense to me to be debating people's salary like this. Why? If UH can't afford it or doesn't think that philosophies match then don't extend and ask him to leave after his contract is over. Why demonize him?

While we maybe bitter about the game's outcome, I find this kind of talk way extreme.

    - He got 10 games when few gave them a chance at a winning season
    - He got 3 WAC championships
    - He positioned us to be in the MWC
    - He achieved most of his goals that included 100% graduation

    These things are usually rewarded.

I'm no expert by any means, but Derek's point is exactly what I felt throughout the game. The fact we were in the game all the way through the fourth quarter tells you how hard they played and didn't quit, which is a reflection on the coaches. But a lesser team wouldn't be dealing with the opponent's second or third string after 6 turnovers. SIX turnovers is near impossible to overcome. 4 starters out, which included 1 you were not planning on to be out makes it even harder.

I understand the issue of taking too much time off but what happen to those who would remind us that they are students first before athlete. I appreciate that ST is helping us understand the student's view point in the matter. It should make us appreciate the athlete all the more. By attacking the head coach, are we sending a signal that undermines this considering how the athletes themselves have supported Coach Mack? Up till now, we haven't heard one athlete speak out saying that we shouldn't have those days off, but there were many who said it was needed.

I was one who left early. I was celebrating Christ birth with my church. I had hoped that the game would end before the service started. Unfortunately, the game went longer than I thought it would. Perhaps next time I shouldn't try to going both. To me my decision what I would choose would be easy.

  195. Derek:

You missed the all time "Hammer". His name is Mark Odom. He's the all time UH sack leader.

  196. A-House:

As a field commander, Patton was 3 stars or LTG.

  197. Garret:

Chris Petersen won the 2010 Fiesta Bowl, his second BCS bowl win, and then took a pay cut to get an extension. Pat Hill took a 30% pay cut to get his extension. The financial reality is that almost all non-AQ school are squeezed with their Athletic Department budget (and even AQ schools like Cal have to cut sports due to budget problems), and UH cannot afford to spend money to improve the program in some areas if it overspends the market in other ares.

This is not demonizing a coach! Was Boise State demonizing Chris Petersen when they told him to take a pay cut after he won his second BCS game?

UH has a horribly underfunded compliance department, which leads to all the complaints about players getting cleared slowly and some recruit's academic casualties slipping through the cracks until too late. This affects EVERY sport, not just football.

UH needs to significantly boost its assistant coaching salaries if it ever wants to truly build a program that has continuity.

UH is over $10 million in the hole and is looking at declining PPV money and other declining revenues (Big West gets less NCAA basketball money than the WAC, etc.). Do we just bury our heads in the sand and ignore all of that?

  198. G (China):

We are justifying a cut based on a loss of the Hawaii bowl or at least that is what I'm hearing a lot of people here saying. To me that isn't fair. If you are going to ask him to take a pay cut because we can't afford it, that is different.

ST I have a question. Why couldn't we let the ineligible players play in the bowl game and suspend them for the first 5 games next year?

  203. papajoe2:

    Nice one Red Zone.

  204. kama krab:

I see where everyone is looking at the record and saying why not give the big dog an extension. For me I'm also on the fence. Look deeper into the 10 win season. Only 3 out of the 10 teams we beat where bowl eligible and I don't think any of the other 7 teams had winning records. Is that something to write home about.

Oh and for further reveiw just for kicks, the two bowl games played under the tenure of the big dog have been big disasters.

If we do give the big dog an extension then I hope it is at most 2 years and incentive laden with a base of around 600,000-800,000. I would give more to the assistance than give more to the big dog. JMOO

Fine, lets justify the cut in pay by our economic circumstances. But if that's not enough you can always add in the overall record to justify it even more. Don't get me wrong, this was a good regular season. I would be the last to take away from that accomplishment. But overall is he a $1.1M coach from a school thats been in the red for so long? From a school that up until the 2007 season didn't have soap in the lock rooms? We don't have Nike CEO's throwing $100M here and there and oil barons giving the AD carte blanc.

this is college football, its business (for good or bad). more wins = more money to go around for everyone. the economic circumstances tie in directly with how well a team does or reverse that...thats especially true here in hawaii (for good or bad).

Hawaii didnt invent those rules, Mack didnt invent those rules, I didnt invent those rules...but thats how it is and we gotta work withthose realities.

Look at Dave Wannstedt from Pittsburgh. His past 3 seasons were WINNING seasons with 3 bowls with a 1-1 w/l record...and he got canned.

Talking about performance based contracts for Mack and cutting his salary here and there for overall performance is reasonable...and from the point of many schools even generous. Remember, no one is against giving him more money should he be successful. He could potentially make near the same amount of money, even more if he is to perform imo.

Realistic or not, for $1.1M a year less the 5% or whatever cut he took, I expect us to stay competitive in our bowl games, if not win them.

  206. kama krab:

    G (China) #194,

It's funny you bring up the fact that you thought we still had chance going into the 4th Quarter. I felt the same way as I talked to my cousin who was sitting next to me. I told him "Ho brah we still get chance" and he tells me "Brah we neva have chance since the first quarter". "The boys playing like crap and the coaches not doing nothing about it". This coming from a guy who has played alot of football and has watched many more games. This coming from a guy who was brought up as a little child going to UH football and has been loyal to the bitter end. For him to say that UH never had a chance says alot. You could just tell by the players body language, especially on offense, that they did not know what hit them. It was pretty sad to watch cause these boys deserve better. We all deserve better and guess what, when it is all said and done, the loss falls on the big dog, whether he likes it or not.

  208. iwonderwhytheyhateme:

Another thing, why do I hear so many people downplaying or dismissing the Bowl game as if its just "another game"...

I mean when we became bowl eligible, when we were picked to go to the Sugar Bowl...wasn't it a BIG THING because...well..umm it actually IS a big thing?

How come now that we lost its all of a sudden not important?

Players don't fight their way through the seasons week in and out, work their tails off just to finish the season with a winning record.

It's not the idea of getting to go bowling, its the game itself. You are more than likely to go up against a team with a winning record and you get to prove yourself that you are THAT GOOD....All eyes on you on national TV, and in the Hawaii Bowls case the only game on TV.

Wonder why people are miffed about this game?...well because we were excited and happy as he11 when we got invited and we are disappointed as he11 that we lost.

  212. RedZone:

One thing about when you play for UH people like myself will always remember you. I remember watching Chris Gaines at a game and every time he got the ball my friend would yell out, "He's going to shoot, he's going to shoot!!!". And sure enough he did.

My condolences to the Gaines family. Thankyou for what Chris brought to Hawaii. He will always be remembered.

    NCAA #210,

No doubt, it's just hard to see young guys out there with that look like they have no chance when they have put in so much hard work. It hurts me to see these guys look like they have already lost the game before the game has even started and guess what, it is the coaches job to get them ready for war, which they where not.

  215. greenthumb:

#197 and other posts about HC compensation. I agree that the reality is budgets are tight, and UH's choice may eventually come down to not "what" but "how." And that's why restructuring the contract makes sense. Agree to an extension, but build it from the ground up, with a baseline guarantee and bonuses for unlocking each one of a bunch of achievements. Like the Kinect idea or how some salespeople's contracts are structured. Then the discussion becomes really clear about what targets are most desired. Academics and graduation, for example, are something the current coach is succeeding with. So for example you could say we expect 90% to meet the baseline contract, but every year the team hits 100% you get a bonus. If I'm not mistaken, some of this was already in place in the past for football and maybe men's basketball. As people are pointing out, there are big financial question marks still to be answered about incoming revenue once we change conferences. So these three factors -- national economic reality, UH's budget woes, conference revenue uncertainty -- have got to be obvious to all parties involved.

I agree, if it was sooo simple and unimportant why get there? Why the hype to get there. Is it that we mistake compete with participate in the conversation? If the call is to simply participate then I can see the call for folks like me to "chill". Why do so many people practice selective memory when we know that most of Mack's salary comes from Private donors? The UH/state of Hawaii is not on the hook for a million dollar salary.
    BIK

  229. NCAA:

What percentage of Coach Mack's salary is from private donations?

  230. kama krab:

    BIK #228,

I think your thinking of JJ contract which half was paid by outside donors. If I am thinking correctly, all of Mack's 1.1 million a year contract is paid by the school.

  231. iwonderwhytheyhateme:

    BIK,

What difference does it make where the money is coming from? The UHAD has to keep itself out of the red...and salaries are part of the UHAD purview.

It just asked UH to pay off its $10M of accumulated debt....which doesn't come from private donations.

Whether the money is from taxes, from private donors, or leprechauns with pots of gold the fact is being able to afford the total package and is it getting back on its investment of that money.

  232. AlaWai:

    UH pays Mac's salary. http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2008/Jan/16/sp/hawaii801160422.html
When JJ left, they did not have an AD nor a "hammer" to go to the community for funding.
Since UH is on the hook for Mac, let's see if the community comes up with $ for the assistants.

  233. Garret:

Why do so many people practice selective memory when we know that most of Mack's salary comes from Private donors? The UH/state of Hawaii is not on the hook for a million dollar salary.

    Bigislandkurt,

ALL of Mack's salary comes from the UH Athletic Department--half of JJ's salary was paid for by donors, but their checkbooks did not open for Mack. Not only is UH on the hook for his ENTIRE salary, but his entire salary counts towards the huge pension he will get when he finishes at UH. Only half of JJ's salary counted towards his retirement benefits (and he left before he had 10 years at UH so UH and the state saved big there), but all of Mack's salary counts towards retirement.

I do *not* have a selected memory on this issue.

By the way, G(China), I would be saying the same thing about the extension whether UH won or loss the Hawaii Bowl. Money has to affect everything that UHAD does, but others gave Mack a contract well beyond what salary range UH really should have afforded. Donors might have paid for a bunch of JJ's salary if he stayed so the $1.1 million could have been affordable, but they aren't paying for Mack's salary.

  236. Bigislandkurt:

    BIK

  237. Bigislandkurt:

Ok, some of you are saying UH is on the hook for the entire salary, and now NCAA finds an article that says private donors DO in fact supplement Mack's salary. Will the real story please come forward?

At any rate, I still believe Mack deserves an extension. To switch coaches at this juncture would be devastating to any type of momentum we got going for us at this point. Disrespecting Mack with a huge salary cut (albeit, an "extension") would be pilau. Straight up Pilau.

This was definitely not just another game and the outcome was very disappointing. My impression of the comments the last few days is that people are putting too much emphasis on this one game and seemingly forgetting the season it took to get there. Say whatever you want about the coaches, but to forget the regular season is, IMHO, very disrespectful to the players. They worked damn hard and traveled many miles to achieve those 10 wins. I'm sure no one intends to sound that way, but that is what it sounds like.

Hey everybody. No worry. I put my trust in JD before and he always came through. I'll put my trust in him again to do the right thing. In 2012, Hawai'i will be playing 9-conference games including the top tier of the MWC--BSU, SDSU, AFA, FSU and NEV. Take a long look at the caliber of recruits these schools are securing. We are currently below the waterline, starwise and otherwise. Our grayshirt program, a major recruiting strategy by MAC, has not matched the effort.
Sorry, I dont see a change past 2012. Time to raise the bar in anticipation rather than to react after being beaten down.
If done correctly, any change over at the top should not hurt, but rather improve our recruiting efforts. We all know, what position coaches our AD will insist upon being retained by the new top kick and what Offense would be preferred as a prerequisite. Not a problem.
Great opportunity to clean house and empty the deadweight.
Great opportunity to upgrade our football program from bottom up.

Granting an extension to MAC is foolish and blind. We can gain more by paying less.
In Ferd's example, we pay less but still get the same. That wont do in a new conference alignment reaching for BCS AQ status and its membership programs gearing up for the challenge.

The UH Board of Regents expects more... well at least Howard Karr does.

During the press conference officially announcing the invitations to the Big West and MWC, Karr openly challenged ALL UH coaches to step things up.

Im sure considering the investment that UH placed into moves to the new conferences, a blowout loss on national TV is NOT what Karr had in mind.

I trust Karr and other concerned members of the BOR will do the right thing when necessary.

  252. Pomai:

With a lot of folks calling for a 40/50% cut in pay for coach Mack due to the tough economic times the state is in maybe we should apply that to all of the unions to take a 50% cut in pay to help us out.....

  253. Darren:

In all fairness to Coach, he did lead us to a very good season…and it really does seem that everything is trending upwards. It does seem like we’re getting closer to where we want to be instead of getting farther away. I really think that it’d be hard to disagree with that.
If we were staying in place (or going backwards), then:

    - we’d still be taking practice snaps under center,

    - offensive line would continue to be problematic and lead the nation in sacks surrendered,

    - we’d have really major game clock issues at the end of halves/games, etc., etc.

Navy in 2009 and Nevada this year were really big games…and the boys came out ready to play. The bowl games, Wisconsin in 2009, and Boise this year were really HUGE games…and we laid eggs in all of them. It’s not so much the losses as compared to how we lost…that needs to improve. And I don’t think anyone’s talking about the players here. We have top level mid-major talent that should be able to play with anybody on any given day.

I too trust JD and those in power to do what’s in the best interest of the university…but I also think it’s a cool thing to be able to debate the pros and cons with knowledgeable folks in a respectful and open manner.

Good evening Tsaiko Nation, I am so VERY SORRY for the passing of my fellow Rainbow basketball player Chris Gaines. It saddens me when I hear of any tragic news to my former Hawaii athletes. I knew of Chris Gaines when I left Hawaii in 1981 and followed his stats through out his career. He was truely a GREAT scorer and put up Hawaii basketball records during his 4 year career that will stand the test of time. I never knew him personally but when you wear that Hawaii uniform during any era of your career, you are Hawaii athletic brothers for LIFE as hopefully with all former Hawaii athletes that WE ALL are well and doing good raising family and being productive citizens. 41 years of age is so young as I count my blessings every day that I can make it to 53. My condolences goes out to his wife and children during this most difficult time. Mahalo to all of you on your thoughts and prayers to this wonderful rainbow gentlemen on and off the court. I've asked Rep. Mark Takai to sponsor (again) a bill which would allow a small donation from an inidivdual or joint income tax refund to be given to the University of Hawai`i similar to the existing ones which can be given for public school maintenance & repairs, the public library system, or domestic violence & child abuse programs.

The details will be worked out in the bill's language, but I would love to see the half of the money raised to be used to help staff the Compliance Office and the other half to be placed in the summer school tuition fund for all student athletes.

More information to come on this, but when a similar bill was submitted three years ago, it quickly died in the House Higher Education Committee. I am hoping that there will be a new Chair this year - perhaps Rep. Takai - but the House is not organized yet.

With respect to the State Senate - Sen. Jill Tokuda is the Chair of the Education Committee which handles all levels of education. She is also my State Senator so perhaps she will be willing to join Rep. Takai is putting together the Senate's version of the bill.

If just 10% of all inidivdual/joint taxpayers were to donate just $3 each, that would raise between $60,000 - $70,000.

Is this something you would be willing to support? Would you be willing to pick up the phone or call your state senator or representative and ask them to support the bill - if it is drafted, submitted, and heard?

On a related note, the University of Hawai`i System has take a HUGE financial hit with the removal last week of all the earmarks from the current federal budget. Educational programs and research projects will be forced to look for alternative funding sources - and that means going to the Legislature, the business sector, the foundations, and whatever can be gotten from the federal government.

That means these academic programs will be in direct competition with some of the athletic operations.

I know that for some folks here athletics is more important than academics, but that is not the way people who focus on public policy issues are going to view the matter.

These financial challenges are probably the best arguments for Jim Donovan adjusting McMackin's salary - and would have to be done even if UH had won the game.

Garret, I am sure the full salary of coach Mac does not count toward the formula for his state retirement. There is a ceiling in the vicinity north of $200,000.

By the way agreeing with someone on a topic does not make it right or somebody wrong. As
Michigan Warrior mentioned if I read him correctly there are different points of view. Usually most people know when they have done something right or wrong by the feeling they get within themselves. Many times when somehting is bothering you for longer than normal period of time, it is usually something that you know needs to be fixed.

I do not know Coach Mac personally and had the opportunity to meet him boarding Hawaiian Air. He comes across as a very polite person and talking with others in my family they felt the same way from how he interacted with the public. As my wife was walking through the isle of the lst class cabin, coach Mac partly being in the isle way politely apologized and said hello. I think that is classy. I following behind her got to congratulate the coach for a great season. He quickly gave me a thank you and shook my hand. For some you might not agree that it was a great season but that's okay cause we all have rights to our views. As for coach Mac he passes my test as a good human being.

I'm not making this an issue of what you said. But rather the tone of how people are coming down on Mack. I think you got to say yes that was a tough lost, but at the end of the day, acknowledging the team's strides should take precedence of the lost.

Some may not want to give coach props, but he hasn't warranted attacks. Some can argue that he should take the blame, but why should we throw him under the bus. Personally, I don't agree with correlating the game with his extension given the fine season UH has had. You can even argue the other way that perhaps he even deserves a raise based on the body of work he has done.

I'm also not so idealistic to think that money isn't an issue. It most certainly is. What this feels like is people finding the right excuse to say hey Mack take a cut because you're not worth the dollar we spend on you. It's too convenient for my taste.

Personally, I like your ideas and any other ideas on how to tackle the financial situation in the athletic department. However, I can't say one way or other about Hawaii's financial footing since I don't know what they are. But that is the point to me, why debate someone's salary when we in the public don't know the facts. I maybe wrong here, but ST seem to have even eluded that the debt that the athletic department accumulated should even be viewed as a sunk cost. So if you look at it that way, maybe the finances make sense. Maybe Ferd looking at the lost revenue of PPV and added expenses doesn't include the realized benefits that Al mentioned here. Or as you and others have suggested, maybe finances really need to be appropriated to other priority needs. But this makes my point, how is debating this here make any sense since we don't know? We don't know the values weighing these decisions. We haven't seen any cost analysis.

This to me isn't as simple as soap in the soap dispenser. JD will need to make tough decisions, but at least we can be more supportive. I'm done with making this an issue. I just think you got to give credit where credit is due.

I will agree on one thing,

Coach Mack is a great human being and I will praise him for being such a wonderful person. He is always willing to say hi or share a word or two with everybody he crosses path with. I want to see Coach Mack do well and I want to see him win the big ones on a regular basis. What I would ask of him is to keep working on his management skills and how to prepare his team for the big games. I feel that if the team had done at least alot of film session and some walk throughs that this game would have been alot different. Once again I hope Coach Mack continues to build on what he has done and continue to learn his craft. You can never stop learning especially since this is his first D-1 gig.

  287. kama krab:

With that I will move on and say that with the schedule we have next year, with great preparation for each game and with great preparation for each nock and cranny a team can throw at them, I feel that hawaii can win all of there games. The first test will be Colorado. This game will set the tone for the season. I hope Coach Mack will have his team ready for battle this time.

Hello. This article was extremely interesting, especially because I was browsing for thoughts on this matter last Thursday.

  576. The rosetta stone:

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  577. CHANEL SUNGLASSES online:

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  580. wholesale coach handbags:

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  582. ED Hardy:

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  593. coach handbags:

If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  615. Andrew A. Sailer:

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

We should be painstaking and fussy in all the intelligence we give. We should be extraordinarily careful in giving guidance that we would not about of following ourselves. I need to say, as very much as I enjoyed reading what you had to express, I couldnt support but lose interest following a while. Its as should you had a good grasp on the subject matter matter, but you forgot to include your readers. Perhaps you should think about this from more than one angle. Or perhaps you shouldnt generalise so much. Its far better if you take into consideration what others may have to say rather than just going for the gut reaction for the theme. Consider adjusting your own thought procedure and giving other people who may study this the benefit of the doubt.
