Helping hand
By Stephen Tsai
Cornerback Mike Edwards, who is set to join the Warriors in mid-July , said he has received inspiration from inside receiver Davone Bess, a former Warrior now with the Miami Dolphins.
Edwards played eight games for Tennessee in 2009 before being dismissed after incurring legal troubles.
Edwards said he has chatted with Bess, who offered encouragement. Before joining the Warriors, Bess had spent time in a youth detention center for his role in a burglary.
"The first thing I told him was to take advantage of this opportunity, because he was very close to not having this chance," Bess said. "I told him to make the most of it. Then I got into my story, how I'm a living example of hope and making the most of a second chance. If I can do it, he can do it."
* * * * *
If you overslept, you missed the 6:30 a.m. workout, the Warriors' official start to the offseason conditioning program.
But the Warriors have been practicing on their own for a while.
Quarterback Bryant Moniz said he has hosted weekly passing/receiving drills at his alma mater, Leilehua High, which installed synthetic turf last year.
"We work out at the home of the Mules — Camp Wahiawa," Moniz said.
He added: "The first week, it was just me and Royce (Pollard). And them me and Royce and Darius (Bright). Then me, Royce, Darius and some others. It's whoever can come out here and make the trips."
This week, the full unsupervised passing drills will be held on the Manoa campus.

Terrific of Bess to keep on giving back to the program by paying it forward to Mr. Edwards.
Best wishes to both.

good article /report this am by our local host entitled, "warriors on the clock...."
Ive been wondering about Mike Edwards and his demeanor.
The last two years have turned his life upsidedown and has taken the highly touted Ohio high school athlete on a serendipitous journey to Hawaii through 5-timezones and several stops along the way. Most are aware of Edward's natural talent and generous assests, yet still, apprehensive in how to measure it's transition over two chaotic years.
Tsai's article provided a quick glance of this talented cornerback's mindset and suggested Edward's has put his problems behind him and placed his future in hard-earned sweat-equity. He commenced his training in a timely fashion ie, immediately following the end of last season, and appears to be enjoying the results of his labor: proudly pointing to his weight gain, strength and conditioning regimine....aloha, and welcome to the warrior ohana Mike....best wishes for 2011.
Go Warriors!

I think it would have been more honorable for Tressel to either stay until The OSU mess has been cleaned up, or promise not to take another head coaching job until The OSU sanctions have been exhausted.
May 31st, 2011 at 7:55 am
ST, Tressel was ASKED to resign. No choice.
May 31st, 2011 at 7:57 am
Yesterday, someone said on the WB that he couldn't believe Tressel would resign over a FEW DOLLARS at the tattoo parlor.
But it amounted to $25,000, right? Hardly a few dollars.

Reverse auction for parking passes starts at 9. Feel like a lil' gamblin'?
May 31st, 2011 at 7:59 am
There's this one first-year player, with a rep as a hard-hitter, who moved to Hawaii last week. He was accompanied by relatives, who helped him settle in. That was one of those reminders that, to us old futs, these guys are really still young people. And all parents try, in their own way, to make sure their kids are OK at a new school.
May 31st, 2011 at 8:01 am
Gigi:
Tressel could have fought it. Might have ended up with a better settlement package.
I just don't like getaways. I would have kept him on campus, make him work it off as a compliance officer.
May 31st, 2011 at 8:03 am
First rule of preschool: Clean up your own mess.
OK, maybe that's the second rule. The first rule is: Don't make a mess.
May 31st, 2011 at 8:05 am
When you have gangrene, doesn't the doc amputate?
Same with Tressel. He was an embarrassment to the school. Best to get rid of him and start fresh.

Jon Gruden - I'd like to see him coach, again.

Good man, Davone Bess.
May 31st, 2011 at 8:08 am
Still remember when #1 started preschool. In our orientation session the teacher mentioned teaching the kids the concept of forming a line.
I was thinking, "Boy, I'm glad they have professionals to do that!"

May 31st, 2011 at 8:10 am
Good Morning Gangeez!
Camp Wahiawa? There's reasons why they're called the Leilehu "Mules". Those receivers had to do a really long route to catch passes up yonder.
Tressel? He musta been thinking that its best to "skitter" while the "skitterin's good". Didn't want that swatter comin' down on him!
Wonder what he'll do now.
May 31st, 2011 at 8:11 am
"Leilehua" that should read.
May 31st, 2011 at 8:11 am
If Ohio State is penalized with no post season play, like USC, do you think they would eager to schedule games with Hawaii?
May 31st, 2011 at 8:13 am
I got kicked out of my first preschool (they were called nursery schools back in the day). Mrs. Thayer's idea of punishment was making us drink a cup of warm water. I kept spitting out the water.

I really admire guys who can stand the browbeating by their coaches.
Me? I would burst into tears.
May 31st, 2011 at 8:20 am
That Bess, volunteering in Costa Rica, mentoring a Warrior prospect, the guy is so inspiring.
May 31st, 2011 at 8:21 am
Growing up, I used to like Ohio State. Thought Woody Hayes was a great coach. The Buckeyes had such a nice back-and-forth rivalry with Michigan.
And then something happened. Instead of just being good, they started to act good and important. Reminded me of that Tai character in Clueless.
Just like Notre Dame. They were really cool until they got the NBC deal.
May 31st, 2011 at 8:22 am
Gigi:
Instead of browbeating, would you prefer drinking a cup of warm water?
May 31st, 2011 at 8:25 am

May 31st, 2011 at 8:27 am
there is a lot brewing in the bcs homemade pot-of-stew and as sam choy likes to point out, its not so much the taste as the ingredients that make the product. tressel is just one spoonful. anyone inside the beltway that knows the workings of congress knows the hound's nose is sniffing in the stew. The fiesta bowl flap over lavish spending and political contributions was not an annomally, but rather a symptom of bcs arrogance. ohio state had no choice, tressel is expendable: get rid of the body, plea for a lesser charge and avoid the scrutiny before someone with an ounce of gray matter on-the-hill makes the link to bcs, big money, exploitation, collusion, monopoly and corruption.

I attended the Stadium Authority meeting last week during which Scott Chan, the Stadium manager, presented an update on all of the capital improvements - including the turf replacement - being done over the next several months.
Afterwards, I called Stephen and suggested that either Dave Reardon, Ferd Lewis, or Stephen himself take some time to talk to Scott and watch the video presentation.

So guys.....I want to ask you'al, if I get requests from twitter to follow me, etc., and I don't know these people from adam, is it safe or not to establish a connection or whatever twitter calls it? I have my reservations about all of these social networking>
May 31st, 2011 at 10:52 am
mctruck, if you value your privacy, don't do twitter or facebook. I have heard negative things about facebook, in particular.
A friend of mine wrote a long essay about his love for his father, and discovered a while later, that management at facebook had deleted the essay and substituted a link to a song about a father.
terrible.
May 31st, 2011 at 10:58 am
Gigi,
yeah, that's what I'm talking bout. Why I asked is because I've had a couple requests from diferrent females wanting permission to follow me on twitter.....which I have yet to use...and I'm saying to myself, "whoa-nellie?" whats this??
May 31st, 2011 at 11:01 am
RE: #66
mctruck -- I dunno, but this seems an unusual question from someone who was once the second-most secret blogger here.

you guys should start a blog. It can be as personal or revealing as you want it to be. heck, you don't even have to reveal your real name!
trouble with facebooks is you have to use your real name.
what if you want to delete your account? management keeps emailing you even after you delete your account.
no thanks. not the same for blogs.
May 31st, 2011 at 11:11 am
RE: #68
ahhhh... mystery explained.
Facebook is kinda interesting. Let's you post photos and videos of yourself easily.
But if you made an account, use another email account (yahoo, gmail, etc.) and maybe use "McTruck" as a last name. Then mark yourself as "single" and watch the ads...
May 31st, 2011 at 11:12 am
SteveM, sounds like you are experienced with facebook.
May 31st, 2011 at 11:12 am
AL - good morning to you - but what happen to our hamburger visit last week?
(Unfortunately, I'm on a diet the next couple of weeks) But you figured that one out too?
May 31st, 2011 at 11:13 am
Gigi:
Why wouldn't you want to use your real name?
Why hide behind an opinion?
At work, nobody reads letters that don't have return addresses.
There are some people who take a long time to write a letter, then won't sign it. Maybe they have a great opinion. Maybe they don't. But if it's unsigned, who cares?
Oh, well.

I have and later deleted it from my blog.
Trouble with my blog is I reveal my real name in the bio because I am trying to sell my books.
May 31st, 2011 at 11:19 am
Gigi:
A few years ago, there was a guy who came up to me, said he posted on other sites.
He starts calling me by name, so I ask him what his name is. He won't say. He says he only goes by his online name. I'm like, yeah, that's fine, but I obviously can see you, so you're not anonymous anymore. He said, nope, he only guys by his online name. Anyway, we chatted a bit. Then as I'm leaving, he says, "See you, Stephen." And I said, "No, you have to call me Warrior Beat host."
May 31st, 2011 at 11:22 am
lol ST. that is pretty extreme.

May 31st, 2011 at 11:25 am

May 31st, 2011 at 11:29 am
Keep working hard Edwards!
Keep working hard Moniz, corps of receivers, and the rest of the team!
Bess is the best!
gigi-hawaii, seems like you reveal plenty much on this blog. Family history, future vacations, where you ate or going to eat, fashion, sheesh, just like facebook. LOL
May 31st, 2011 at 11:31 am
Instead of exploring the possibility of Ohio St. coming to Hawaii which will never happen because of the prohibitive expense etc..Hawaii should explore the possibility of going to Ohio St. as Hawaii has already been to Alabama, Iowa, & Wisconsin so if Ohio St. could cover Hawaii's expenses and since they will be on probation esp. from post-season then the chances look good for a game at Ohio St. Oh, well, even fantasies come true...imagine a pkg. deal to Ohio St. on a charter....I would be the first to sign-up....whatever the cost may be......cheers to everyone!!
May 31st, 2011 at 11:33 am
but if I want to delete my blog, that can be done with a click.
no emails from management after that is done.
zip, fini.
May 31st, 2011 at 11:35 am
You can't delete, by yourself, what you already wrote on here. As SteveM mentioned, use another email address that you could care less about or create one just for fb.
May 31st, 2011 at 11:37 am
In the past, I have asked ST to delete my comment. And he has. Especially after I revealed my daughter's place of employment.
May 31st, 2011 at 11:39 am
Ummm, I just wrote, "by yourself".
May 31st, 2011 at 11:47 am
Re: #88
gigi -- did you base your books only on what you heard? Similarly, Facebook is evolving and while similar to a blog on a transient smaller scale, I do not think a person like you having both is mutually exclusive. Same stuff...but closer to your bloggers.
I run a website, which, due to it's old-fashioned simplicity, is static and does not allow direct interaction from the viewers.
May 31st, 2011 at 11:52 am
I have noticed that some people who have both FB and blogs tend to neglect their blogs because they are so busy on FB.
My daughter is one of them. She hasn't updated her blog since December.
May 31st, 2011 at 11:54 am
Satch:
You're right about OSU not coming here. Apparently the NCAA is cracking down on schools using the Hawaii exemption as a reward for schools on probation. That was nearly the case with USC. It all stems from Alabama, while on probation, using Hawaii as its version of a bowl game.
UH would consider going to Ohio State as 1) home and home, or 2) if it gets a lot of moolah. But home-and-home won't be a possibility.
May 31st, 2011 at 11:55 am
The best thing about a blog is nobody sends you Farmville requests.

Same as the Thunder.

Jazz.
Sheesh.

So, LeBron is going to guard Dirk. He's going to have a hard time doing that.
What's that short Maverick's name? Berrea? He will escape the Heat's clutches cause he's so little.
yay!

LeBron has been named to the NBA All-Defensive team for the last 3 years.

facebook is like going to Ala Moana and running into old friends from different islands and having lunch with them at the food court. Don't feel like cooking when I get home.
Facebook is great for planning events involving people from many different time zones. Our concert tour of India last summer, involving 130 people from 20 countries was organized on facebook.

gigi- email is too cumbersome when you have to notify a hundred people of many many details and unique situations that may apply to groups within the larger group. We were dealing with flights and schedules around the volcanic ash plume from Iceland... sectionals, visas and passports, ground transportation coordination, you name it... facebook was fabulous.

Beer cans are better than bottles, some more research has shown. Keeps the stuff fresher!
Just like in Wine , the future is plastic bottles and screw tops.
When I was in the Barossa Valley, near the Australian Wine Institute, A winery that was top end and state of the art, gave us a compelling audio visual report on the physics and chemistry involved.
The plus was when we carted a sixer of their wine around it was much lighter
I usually set my beer can down to type only because my inward curved fingers (Dupytrans) can"t reach all the keys

The National College Players Association has done to research to show that an Athletic Scholarship falls short of being a full ride. In fact, academic scholarships offer true full rides while the "full ride" of an athletic scholarship leaves things out. So, if a student-athlete plays for years for a certain school, he/she would have to pay almost $44,000!
I find it SHAMEFUL that some colleges require their student athletes to pay for medical coverage out of their own pocket! Athletes need medical coverage and the least a school can do for the athletes that sacrifice their body for their school is cover their medical expenses!

May 31st, 2011 at 7:18 pm
The interesting news to me is that UH has the *best* scholarship coverage of any MWC or WAC school. Scholarships for UH athletes fall $1,674/year short of covering the true cost for them to go to UH.
Here are some other schools for comparison. The $$ amount given is the amount computed that is not covered by the "full-ride" athletic scholarship.
UH $1,674
University of Utah $5,886
San Diego State University $3,977
Brigham Young University $3,700
University of Idaho $4,832
San Jose State University $4,110
New Mexico State University $3,878
University of Nevada $3,855
Boise State University $3,804
Utah State University $3,540
Louisiana Tech University $3,459
Fresno State $2,832

So, if the NCAA College Players Association and the NCAA itself get their way and athletic scholarships are increased to cover the full cost of school, it will cost UH less than all other WAC and MWC schools.
Some schools make their athletes pay for school supplies and medical coverage...how is that giving a full ride? Even worse, the *academic* scholarships cover everything while the athletic scholarships do not.
Heck, I made a profit by going to school--I even bought a condo when I was a grad student and qualified for the loan solely from my fellowship. Why should my academic scholarships have paid for all fees and health coverage when athletes who give up so much of their own time to represent their school had to ask their families to give them money for those things?
May 31st, 2011 at 7:48 pm
Garret,
So, an athlete coming to Hawaii vs the schools listing saves $$$ each year? How does this compare to the rest of the MWC, I wonder?

I've never been to Facebook. Is there some way to lurk without having to sign up or sign in?
As for setting up my own: I cannot imagine that anything I do personally would be of interest to anyone else. If I don't have any "friends" in the real world, why would I have any in cyberspace?
May 31st, 2011 at 11:33 pm
gigi - Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with relatives and friends. I have actually gotten to know some of my cousins better through FB than in real life. Some people check their FB pages more often than their email. When we went on vacation last year, it was easier to talk to my cousins on FB than through email or phone to arrange when we would be coming and our activities once we got there.

madeinhawaii,
Here are the annual amounts that MWC athletic scholarships do not cover. Air Force is not included in this list of course since they are in a whole different category. TCU is an expensive private school and their athletes only need to pay a little more than UH, but Utah and SDSU are public Universities that seem to force their athletes to pay the most in the MWC--a "full ride" to Utah over 5 years will cost an student-athlete over $29k.
University of Utah $5,886
San Diego State University $3,977
Brigham Young University $3,700
University of New Mexico $3,430
University of Wyoming $3,088
University of Nevada, Las Vegas $2,570
Colorado State University $2,232
Texas Christian University $1,920
