Held to a higher standard

February 9th, 2012
By Stephen Tsai

As the story goes, a few weeks ago, a couple of football players were late for an evening study hall.

They were told to report at 6 a.m. the next day.

After they reported, each was told to hold a textbook over his head.

For 30 minutes.

The past two weeks, no player has been tardy for study hall.

Big week on the Manoa campus.

Tonight, the softball team opens the 2012 season tonight, and the men's basketball team faces Nevada in a black-shirt event. Tomorrow, the volleyball team faces No. 2 UC Irvine. No word on the color scheme for that MPSF match.

* * * * *

Give Charlie Wade credit for innovative thinking. Early in match weeks, the volleyball Warriors have a yoga session.

Sounds like basic training method for the military. I remember holding a rifle above my head and running around a tree counting the leaves.

I'm sorry, if that story is true whoever is responsible is an idiot and should be forced to apologize to the players and write 100 times on a chalkboard that it is not 1949.

  4. Stephen Tsai:

    What's a chalkboard?

  5. whitey:

    who is an idiot????

  6. whitey:

so how would you discipline. kiss 'em on the arse!!!

  7. whitey:

typical today's parent, coach disciplines and instead of backing up the coach, backs up the kid who is wrong.

  8. Chee Hoo:

    Top 10!

fehoko fanaika added a offer to Georgia and is visiting Florida this weekend...

Gonna be tough to land him now

  10. Da Punchbow Kid:

    Good Morning Gangeez! :)

    Top Ten?

  11. Buffoman:

#7 Well, we don't want to traumatize the child and have to bring in a child psychologist to help ease the pain and suffering caused by this incident would we (sarcasm)?

I'm sorry but kids today just don't know how to deal with consequences. It is becoming really hard for people to accept responsibility for their actions (without a lawyer present).

Too bad, we were once a tough, strong nation but it's become much easier to blame. Look at those fools on the Hill. Nothing gets done.

  12. Da Punchbow Kid:

Sorry to see that jeezy. Liked what I saw of Fehoko. Hopefully, still get chance.

  13. WarriorMojo:

Shame on Coach Chow! He should have hugged those players, told them he knows how hard it is to be on time, and given them 15 minutes grace period for every study hall the rest of the season. Never EVER hold people responsible for their own actions. There's ALWAYS something else to blame.

But if was me, I would be so shame to hold the book over my head (Look at the symbolism there!), I would never be late again.

  14. Da Punchbow Kid:

I can't wait to see Chow's team play football.

  15. Stephen Tsai:

It seems Fanaika wants to go to a big program with a large Polynesian enrollment.
    Perhaps he should try eHarmony.

  16. Garret:

I like the emphasis on study hall and punctuality. Coach Chow needed to send a message to his players and use the punishment as an example to get everybody in line.

Many new coaches use this strategy to set the tone. We've seen coaches cut players, for example.

  17. Stephen Tsai:

  18. Da Punchbow Kid:

Hey Esquire Mojo! Yes, the visual metaphor is powerful isn't it?

Enjoyed reading yours and Garret's posts about the Big East on yesterblog. One thought I had was how would the travel eastward affect UH in conference away games. Hopefully the Big East could become a true "Pan American Conference", with more members from the western U.S.

There seems to be a few Polys round here... :) Our players are getting larger too! :)

  21. WarriorMojo:

Along those lines, Coach Chow's late night session with the returning players was BRILLIANT!

Every player was told what the expectations are for the new coaching staff. They were asked to buy in, to commit to the changes. None of those players can ever claim they didn't know things were going to be different.

If they fail to do what is expected, they WILL be held accountable. It is in their own hands. If problems arise, they will have no one to blame except themselves.

  22. ai-eee-soos:

    good one: eHarmony.

  24. misterfudge:

Big football program with a large Polynesian population in the SEC? Is he thinking straight?

Was the travel subsidy limited to the existing MWC teams or does it apply to everyone that get's picked up along the way?

  25. WarriorMojo:

    Oh, and good morning all!

DPK, I think the concept that Garret posted is that there will be a western division of the Big East, so it's not like every road game is a 12 hour plane ride. Sometimes it will be, but some trips will be to boise, san diego, etc.

  26. ai-eee-soos:

Nick Rolovich: Congratulations on your new job.

  28. Garret:

    Garret,

So you think the Boise St president is lying

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7548168/boise-state-broncos-prez-too-late-join-big-east-12

Or you think SDSU is going to bail out instead?

    el burro sabio,

I do NOT think that Pres. Kustra is lying when he says that he cannot think of a way to leave at this late date without having the rest of the MWC feel like BSU has "treated them shabbily". However, West Virginia is *desperate* right now since they need somebody to join the Big East this year so that West Virginia can go to the Big 12 and West Virginia probably has a very easy solution...$$$.

If Boise State plays in the MWC in 2012, then they will have to pay an exit fee of about $5 mil that will be split among 8 schools. If UH gets an equal share (which I doubt since UH isn't a full member of the conference), then each school will get a little over $600k.

If Boise State plays in the Big East in 2012, according to the MWC's own rules they will have to pay $7 mil. West Virginia would raise that to $9 mil (which coincidentally matches what the Big 12 will reportedly pay to help West Virginia leave the Big East early), which means that the 6 schools left in the MWC (before UH/Fresno/Nevada join) would each get $1.5 mil. That is 2.5x more money than they would get if Boise didn't leave early! That is basically equal to the profit that a MWC school would make for making a BCS bowl game...

Remember, Pres. Kustra didn't say that it would be against the MWC's rules for Boise State to leave early. He said that he didn't see how Boise State could leave early without making the Presidents of the other MWC schools feel bad. But if West Virginia opens up its checkbook and each MWC school gets $1.5 mil...I don't think that they would feel too badly about Boise State leaving.

Heck, the MWC schools would apparently get the same TV money they get now, have 1 less school to share the TV and NCAA basketball money with, AND would get an extra $1.5 mil...they probably would tell Boise State to go!

  29. Garret:

We could do what Boise can't because our other teams (most of 'em) are already placed in the Big West. We would have to tell Big East to schedule around our existing out of conference games, which should be doable. There would only be 7 Big East games in 2012, right Garret?

That is correct, WarriorMojo. With 8 teams in 2012, the Big East would have 7 conference games.

  30. A-TEAM:

I like the discipline. You must set the tone. In order to have a success program you must be a hard arse at the same time be there for them in time of need. I talked to my son and he likes the new system, well structured. In-House is getting cleaned up. It's going to be a competitive season. Chowline is forming. Go WARRIORS!!!!!!!!!

  31. Stephen Tsai:

There also is a "proper-attire" code for workouts.
All the players have to wear a specific UH shirt.
(I was going to write "same shirt" but people might think they all share one shirt.)

  32. 808Fringe:

SUP HAWAII!!! Maybe someone should tell Fanaika to make sure his papers are up to par given what Georgia did to that other Poly kid. What ever happened to that kid anyway?

  33. Garret:

After all the shifting is done, the Big East is expected to have 8 conference games. That means 4 home and 4 road games.

The western wing of the Big East already has Boise State, SDSU, SMU, Houston

The western wing of the Big East may be adding Air Force soon. Navy is already telling Air Force that they will be dropped from their schedule unless they join the Big East, plus if the MWC suffers more losses then the Big East will look increasingly attractive.

If (and this is purely hypothetical and I don't think it will happen) UH also joined the western wing, then the western wing would have:
    UH
    SDSU
    BSU
    AFA
    SMU
    Houston

That means that 3 Eastern schools would be faced each season, which means 1 or 2 road trips back east. So, UH could have *1* trip back east to Orlando or Annapolis or somewhere else in a season. That is the beauty of the western wing of the Big East...it actually would be less travel time than UH had in the WAC since the Big East schools are near major airports unlike the places that UH played in the WAC (and some MWC locations aren't exactly easy to get to either).

  34. Garret:

SUP HAWAII!!! Maybe someone should tell Fanaika to make sure his papers are up to par given what Georgia did to that other Poly kid. What ever happened to that kid anyway?

I think that he signed with Big East-bound UCF.

  35. Kevin:

At 29, I am who I am today because of my parents, and they are the people they are because of their parents.

If the parents of today are such losers and inadequate human beings and some insinuate on here, follow the REALISTIC trail of accountability, responsibility, and guidance.

This generation was spawned and inspired by those that came before in one fashion or another.

    S*** trickles down.

With that being said, the usual case of the double-standard is stupid.

If a young individual is outstanding, people will think his parents are fantastic, but no credit to his generation.

If a young individual is rotten, people will assume his parents were crappy, and the WHOLE generation is useless as well.

Something wrong with this. Well, you should be able to see what is wrong with this if you don't have your head up your arse...

  36. Garret:

The MWC has to expand due to losing so many members--for example, they will be down to 7 basketball schools and 5 baseball schools after BSU/SDSU leave. But CUSA has a high exit fee ($7 mil) and more TV money, so the MWC has to either poach the WAC or merge with CUSA.

Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said Wednesday through a representative that going into the 2013 season with eight football teams isn't a workable number. To expand, the conference is exploring options of merging with Conference USA or adding several schools.

"The Mountain West needs to change the numbers," Thompson said. "Staying with a status quo of eight teams for 2013 is not acceptable."

Thompson believes progress on a merger plan could develop in the next few weeks. With the announced departure Wednesday of Memphis from Conference USA to the Big East, the presidents finally have a solid number from which to form a plan.

One of they keys to Dela Salle's success was discipline.. focus was on team before self. No long hair, no piercings or bling on game day, and I think tats had to be covered up. Very extreme, but then of course they were very successful.

I think the June's fault, that carried over to Mack, was to treat them like NFL players. Problem is kids out of High School is way different than men getting paid...

Big Ups to Coach Chow for bringing pride and discipline back to Manoa

  38. Garret:

Memphis apparently agreed to play home-and-home men's basketball games against both Boise State and SDSU as a condition of them getting into the Big East. UCONN will also play both BSU and SDSU with home-and-home deals. The Big East is giving 4 nice basketball TV games to their football-only members...

Boise State's men's basketball team will start a four-year home-and-home series with new Big East member Memphis in 2013-14, Memphis AD R.C. Johnson told the Memphis Commercial Appeal on Thursday. Memphis announced it was joining the Big East on Wednesday.

Boise State officials were unaware of the provision Thursday morning.

Johnson said Big East Commissioner John Marinatto asked Memphis to play both Boise State and San Diego State. Johnson told the newspaper that Connecticut has also agreed to play Boise State and San Diego State, who are joining the Big East in 2013 as football-only members.

  39. Garret:

Looks like Craig Thompson might be bailing on the MWC and going after the AD spot at Minnesota. This surprises me because Thompson was supposed to be the commissioner of the MWC/CUSA new conference.

Mountain West Conference Commissioner Craig Thompson hasn't lived in the Twin Cities area since graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1978, but there is no denying his family ties to the U.

With Joel Maturi retiring as athletics director June 30, Thompson said his door is "open" to his alma mater for discussions about the job.

(I was going to write "same shirt" but people might think they all share one shirt.)

I like this as a way to further promote team unity. I assume this would also mean that UH (or UA) would be issuing a number of shirts to each player, hopefully more than they previously got so that they aren't doing laundry all the time.

    Good morning everyone!

Must have discipline to effect changes. We all see and expect positive changes for the UH football program. Remember that Coach Chow is a professor of Educational Psychology. No mystique here...he is a master teacher and leader.

Let's not forget Coach Mack's graduation rate success. Coach Chow is merely continuing the example Mack set.

Next thing you know there is opala in the pool, graffiti and vandalism to the rec center, all done by those who it was bulit for. So the pool was empied. Years later there are complaint for "facility" upgrades.

Word was," if you folks took care of what you had, it would be easier to justify an upgrade."

Freshmen even from quality backgrounds are vulnerable to the freedom of a college environment. The key to keeping them focused is trust and wanting to be part of something bigger than their egos.

"High school hairies" was the term we used to describe college freshman. Full of themselves without a clue. Hazing was a tactic used to bring them into alignment with the truth of their situation.

I well recall my pledge class running a half mile in our shorts in the snow with chili water in our mouths trying to put on a small fire on campus. It brings to mind the Hank Williams Jr. song "Attitude Adjustment". Those that toughed it out made the class those that didn't became "dormies".

This football team needs 4th quarter types that don't give up --- ever. I wish Chow the best of luck.

  51. jkjones:

I believe all the rules incorporated or soon to be by Coach Chow are meant for discipline.
Coach Chow is a firm believer in fundamental teachings, not by study, but through life experiences. The basics worked for him and he has applied it to life in general and football in particular. Remember Chow was a Palolo boy, who grew up in humble surroundings, ventured the short distance to Wilder and Punahou Streets, and took the longer distance to success.
It all starts with his perception of what a successful football player constitutes and thus, what ingredients are needed to get there. It's that simple. No PHd required.

they are also hoping to benefit by getting a new tv contract.

@ 71. I understand your point for taller-sized DBs. It's the trend. Longer arm reach, etc., etc.

    BUT:

Turner isnt a confirmed warrior.... yet.
Darryl was moved to LB, now back to safety. Not tested.
Leroy Lutu has no game experience to speak. Not tested.
Ron Fields was highly regarded in JUCO. untested at the D1A level.

    Dont forget Mike Edwards, 5-10, 180, John Hardy-Tuliau, 5-11, 165, Kawika Ornellas, 5-9, 175, Mike Sellers, 5-11, 175, Brandon Leslie, 6-0, 200, Poueu-Luna, to mention a few.
Not counting some promising redshirts--Ijumaa Armstrong, 5-8, 170. Poueu-Luna redshirted in 2010 and i lost track of him last year, ditto with Dee Maggitt. Bubba is a fine athlete listed at 5-11, 175.
Then there are our heralded incoming frosh-- Anthony Pierce, Marrell Jackson and Ne'Quan Phillips. If they are as good as advertised, Kaumeyer (DC) and Demarest (dbs) may lobby Chow to burn their redshirt year and play one, several or all. As we witnessed in their videos, dynamite comes in small pakages--Pierce and Phillips--both stand 5-9.

  80. Garret:

    Garret.

    1. Is it conceivable UH could get left out of the MWC/C-USA merger?
    2. Yesterday people were chewing the fat about UH in the Big East. How do you rate the chances of that?

    Old Diver,

    1. It is technically possible if they are dissolving the MWC to form a new conference with CUSA. However, the MWC/CUSA alliance has been rapidly losing members and they *need* UH. Craig Thompson already said that UH would be paying travel subsidies in the alliance, so UH's inclusion is pretty much assumed. I don't think that *any* MWC or CUSA school would be left behind, as that they need numbers right now and there are so many schools just happy to be included that they wouldn't want to talk about leaving other schools out--less they have a chance of being left out.

    2. I think that UH's chances are really low because UH is down on the pecking order right now. If UH was coming off the 2006/2007 seasons, realignment equations would be completely different, but given the TV ratings and TV market size UH has UH needs to be ranked to get attention.

From what I've read, New Mexico and Fresno State inquired about Big East membership around the time that SDSU joined and Air Force is seriously considering joining in the near future. If the Big East wants to form a west wing, they have lots of options that would be better geographically for them.

UH's big selling point was something that I hadn't thought of and I had never seen discussed anywhere before WarriorMojo brought it up yesterday--UH might be able to solve the Big East's need for a team to join in 2012 since UH is transitioning conferences anyway. But it is pretty late in the process to get UH to jump into the discussion, as they are looking to finalize things really soon.

  81. Garret:

Lamar is looking forward to their trip to Hawaii. Lamar didn't even have a football program for quite some time before they brought back football in 2010, they will have fun and go back with a loss and a check from UH.

“It will be a great way to open the season against longtime rival Louisiana-Lafayette, and, of course, there’s the trip to Hawaii. That should be a lot of fun for the players, the coaches and the entire travel party.”

    http://www.kfdm.com/articles/highlight-47007-lamar-schedule.html

  82. Freddy808:

yes not tested but when we were tested last year we got burned, mossed and ran over where was the physicality

  83. Garret:

    Old Diver,

I'm not worried at all about UH being left out of the MWC/CUSA conference. What I *am* worried about is that this 16-team conference with minimal TV money will spawn a WAC16 scenario where some schools meet at an airport and start their own conference. Many of the MWC schools have experience at doing just that and they might get tired of splitting money with schools like UAB, Rice, and Tulane.

Unless there is enough TV money in the alliance, I cannot see that 16 or so conference in 5 time zones lasting a decade...somebody will lead a split and I really hope UH is included in that group.

  84. jkjones:

@72. That's true for everyone on the team with the exception of Haku Correa.

    @76. Pun Isaac Savaaiinaea, 6-3, 230, was a first team all-state selection as a Jr. in 2011.

  85. jkjones:

Garret, thanx for updating us all on conference realignments. there has been so much shuffling and dealing, it's becoming like a Kim Kardashian reality show, including short-term marriages.

  86. jkjones:

@ 82. good points. Proof is in the puddin, yeah. IDK, perhaps, game experience coupled with a new system and coaches will make the difference. This is my point--the 2.5 rotation/depth rule applies to DBs too. That means, we need 10 players ready to go for 4-positions. Injuries happen. We are going to need every DB that makes the travel roster. Also, IDK about new ST coach Demarest, traditionally, DBs are used on STs.

  87. HawaiiMongoose:

If the alliance can't generate a meaningful increase in TV dollars, then instead of merging with CUSA, what's left of the MWC should turn its attention to building a stable second western FBS conference to compete with the Pac-12. In my view that means pulling in UTEP and finally ending the WAC's misery by scooping up NMSU, USU and SJSU (sorry Idaho).

Mountain Division - Wyoming, CSU, AFA, New Mexico, NMSU, UTEP
West Division - Hawaii, SJSU, FSU, Nevada, UNLV, USU

If/when Boise State and SDSU tire of being shamelessly used by the Big East, they can join the West Division and USU can shift over to the Mountain.

Let the Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC and Big East fight over the market from Texas eastward.

  88. Ipu Man:

Memphis just joined The Big East (for 2013?)...
So will be an eight team rather than Big a seven-team conference. But expect the conference to pursue expansion over the next couple of months to get back to a 10 or 12-team league.

Air Force: The conference is reportedly considering inviting the Falcons as a football-only member. Air Force has a national following and would be a solid addition to the conference. However, it’s an odd geographic fit and doesn’t substantially increase the Big East’s standing nationally.

Army: The Black Knights tried conference membership before and it didn’t go so well. Army was a dreadful 13-67 in Conference USA from 1998-2004. If Navy and Air Force joined, perhaps the Black Knights could be enticed. Also, coach Rich Ellerson has upgraded the football program during his tenure and it’s very likely Army would be a lot more competitive in a conference this time around.

East Carolina: The Pirates have already expressed their interest in making a conference shift, applying to join the Big East on Tuesday. Although some reports have already nixed East Carolina as an expansion candidate, the Pirates should be high on the priority list. East Carolina ranked No. 50 in attendance last year, which is higher than Rutgers, Cincinnati, Connecticut, South Florida and Syracuse. With BCS conference money flowing into the program, the Pirates could be a solid long-term solution.

Houston: The Cougars are under consideration for Big 12 expansion, but the Big East may end up being the more likely destination. Houston would be an attractive market for the conference to tap into and would give TCU a Big East rival. Very few cons for the conference to invite the Cougars and would be a good pick to help rebuild the Big East.

Memphis: The Tigers have long been interested in joining the Big East. This would be an invite to strengthen the conference for basketball purposes, as the football team is currently one of the worst in college football and the facilities are in need of repair.

Navy: Similar to Air Force, the Big East may invite the Midshipmen as a football-only member. Navy would be a good geographic fit and has a national following. The Midshipmen have been very competitive in recent years, winning at least eight games a season since 2003. Would the Midshipmen want to give up their football independence? If Air Force and Army say no to the Big East, Navy might not be interested.

Notre Dame: An extreme longshot. The Irish aren’t giving up independence, but the Big East can at least try. Would be a huge upset if Notre Dame joined the Big East for football.

SMU: If the Big 12 doesn’t call, would the Mustangs be interested in a spot in the Big East? If the conference has to turn outside of the BCS conferences for expansion candidates, a team in the Dallas market makes a lot of sense.

Temple: The Big East kicked out the Owls after the 2004 season, but Temple has improved its football product in recent years. The Owls would get the Big East into the Philadelphia market, but has struggled to fill Lincoln Financial Field on Saturdays.

UCF: Unless the Big East invites Boise State or BYU, the Knights are probably the most competitive and capable team for contending Big East title right now. Would South Florida block UCF from joining? Although the Bulls may not like the idea of having another Florida school in the conference, the Big East could run out of options.

Villanova: The Wildcats appeared close to joining the Big East earlier this year and are already a member in basketball. The football program is competing at the FCS level, but would help the conference get into the Philadelphia market. Villanova would likely need some time to build its program if it makes the move from the FCS level, and would not help the Big East from a national perspective much right now.

Thought, is there anyone at UH tracking the numerous players who are about to return from LDS missions? Many have both Poly and Hawaii connections. I know there are plenty, but if we track them, we can show interest and ask people close to them if they are really happy with the school they are attending, or are they just going back to the same school because that is what RM's do, and it is too hard to search for schollies, etc while they are on mission - some have no phones, some no electricity even.

Raiders drop Stanford Routt, he wasn't living up to his hype and fat contract. On February 25, 2011 Al Davis signed him to a 3 yr contract at $31.5 million, 20 million guaranteed for the first 2 years. At that time I thought is was a waste, he should have signed Asomugha, now the Raiders need to rebuild their defensive back field. They need safety help, our corners are fast but inexperience, we gave up lots of yards after catch.

Some of the pot will help if they have to pay a school to fill out their schedule or its just our good luck that we decided to join the conference at that time. We are all conference members and should share equally. jmho.

  104. Buffoman:

So, if Thompson does bolt, who picks up the baton for the MWC? Any speculation? I'd assume that the Presidents would want a real visionary with an aggressive approach to conference stability and relevance in the eyes of television folks.

I'd also say that if he has one foot out the door looking at something else, the Presidents should be proactive and start looking out for themselves and the conference.

  105. Manoa:

    88, Ipu Man

Your post information is outdated-- it has already happened-- SMU, Houston, and UCF have been invited and agreed to go to the Big East for all sports. Add Memphis now for all sports. In addition, Boise State and San Diego State are joining, but only for football

  106. Bowwar:

JT Turner is not a "done deal" due to academic issues (number of credits to be eligible), but it doesn't look likely he'll be a Warrior.

Is it true that the kicker from Maui is returning to walk-on at Hawaii?

  107. Stephen Tsai:

By the way, the new staff doesn't know about any long-snapper.

  109. Stephen Tsai:

  110. jeezy33:

    106. Norm Chow doesn't even know the name JT Turner when he was on Call the Coach and made it clear Hawaii was not recruiting him anymore due to not meeting academic requirements.

I think Fanaika Might have committed to Florida on his trip today. Tough to compete with a top 10 football program

  111. WarriorNY:

Anyone know where I can find the audio or transcript of the Call the Coach show?

The writer of that "Boise not going to the Big East until 2013" article thinks that Boise will play in the Big East in 2012.

RT @murphsturph: Despite what BSU prez told me, I think Boise St. could go Big East/WAC in ’12. My reporting jives w/ @McMurphyCBS report

    https://twitter.com/McMurphyCBS

  114. Couch potato:

    florida is top 10?

  115. Garret:

It sounds like the WAC is already arranging their schedules so that BSU can join the WAC in 2012 as a non-football member. Instead of paying $5 mil or so if they left in 2013, they are throwing out numbers like $9 mil for them to leave in 2012.

Boise State has had discussions with the Western Athletic Conference to determine if its Olympic sports teams could join the WAC in 2012 in case the Broncos’ football program joins the Big East this fall, sources told CBSSports.com.

“The Big East has been pushing them ‘quietly’ to join for 2012,” a source said. “The WAC has had to rearrange lots of [its Olympic sports] schedules [in anticipation of the possible move].”

Two other sources told CBSSports.com they believe Boise State will play in the Big East in 2012.

One reason is the Mountain West’s by-laws allow a school to leave early if a penalty is paid.

  117. Garret:

    99club,

I would not say that AFA would never go to the Big East, we know that they have studied that quite closely and they could end up going. Navy is trying to twist their arm to make the switch, which is why they made that threat. I do agree with you that I cannot imagine Navy ever dropping Air Force but it is a fact that they are using that threat to try to encourage Navy to join the Big East.

  118. Couch potato:

"I cannot imagine Navy ever dropping Air Force but it is a fact that they are using that threat to try to encourage Navy to join the Big East."

    huh?

  119. HawaiiMongoose:

I'm not sure BSU's Coach Petersen will be real happy about leaving early for the Big East. It will result in the Broncos having to play six away games east of the Mississippi next year (four against current Big East teams, plus out of conference matchups against Michigan State and Southern Mississippi). For the first time, a Mainland school will find out what it's like to play a road schedule with travel somewhat similar to what Hawaii faces. And BSU will have to do it with about 17 or 18 new starters, including a new QB.

  120. Garret:

I cannot imagine Navy ever dropping Air Force but it is a fact that they are using that threat to try to encourage *Air Force* to join the Big East

  121. Garret:

    HawaiiMongoose,

I agree that playing in the Big East without the other western teams wouldn't be good for Boise State. Their school might just be writing off that season and be focusing on $$$--if West Virginia pays the buyout fee, then Boise State saves the $5 mil they would have to pay, plus the increased revenue that Boise State would get from being in the Big East, plus no entrance fee (if there is such a thing)...that could be a net $10 mil difference for them, which would pay for a lot of upgrades for their program.

i was curious...there's but one poly player on the gators' roster who is from florida.
the school demopgraphics do not show a number for pacific islanders. they are grouped with the asian pac islanders, etc.

    probably just a trace number.

  138. jkjones:

the best move Hawaii made was joining the BIG West for all sports save a few exceptions.
It provides stability for the base programs and is a cost saver by virtue of travel. It also provides a staging area for recruiting in all sports in talent rich Calif.

On the other hand, Hawaii football should have no allegance to any football conference.
We learned dog-eat-dog the hard way. Its all about money, so unless the powers-to-be can ante the seed monies, Hawaii will remain as a standby pick-up.

With all the midmajor wannabees posturing for upgrades, its a sad reality for us to sit-back as spectators, waiting like a Dave Shoji team, to see where we will play.

Norm Chow has given us a glimpse of a professional college coach. We need the same leadership at the next administrative level. We should demand it.

  139. jkjones:

If Hoku wants a bigtime program with polynesians, why is he visiting the east coast?
he must have his oceans confused. It's the left-coast he should be visiting. Not, you dont have to tell a poly where other polynesians live. the 2010 census is easy to read.
btw, i personally believe he has made up his mind and is just tripping. If you notice, he made visits to Hawaii the midwest (kansas) and the east coast (florida). He literally tripped the girth of the usa. coincidence? No way. You gotta admire Hoku, he's having fun.

  140. 3-Prong:

Garrett/ST: Is the major obstacle to getting in a BCS conference, the cost to travel to Hawaii or the traveling itself? If it is the cost, would it make economic sense to pay 100% of the travel costs for visiting teams? With the TV money the way it is, wouldn't the net income to us be much better than what we have now. I think it is safe to say that the PAC-14 (wishful thinking) would always have a lucrative contract.

Winning the Big East Championship means more to Navy football coach Ken Niumtalolo than capturing the Commander-in-Chief's trophy the three service academy football teams battle for each year.

Niumatalolo went on to say he'd rather play Notre Dame every year than the Air Force Academy if scheduling conflicts caused by the Big East forced the Naval Academy to choose.

Since Navy's football team accepted the Big East's invitation to join the conference starting in 2015, these are the choices the Naval Academy athletic director might face.

"If it gets to the point because of scheduling conflicts that we can't play everybody and the schedule is going to become an issue, the Army game will never go anyplace. I'd rather keep Army and Notre Dame and not worry about the Commander-In-Chief's trophy. We're in a conference now. So we need to try to win a conference championship,” Niumatalolo told ESPN.com.

Thanks for posting #155. I now see where this all came from. We just have to count the stars on Ken's shoulders to know how much weight that statement carries. While ND and Navy have a great history going back to WWII when ND picked up a good amount of Annapolis overflow and is still, I believe, the largest Navy ROTC detachment in the country, the service academy series will win out if it indeed comes down to an 'either or' decision.

    99club,

I agree that Navy will continue playing Air Force, but Niumatalolo is probably not being discouraged from making these statements (he's said it to at least *6* media outlets that I've counted so far) because Navy wants Air Force to join the Big East. I do find it interesting that Navy and Air Force do not schedule each other in Men's basketball...I would have assumed that they played every year in that sport.

Niumatalolo pointed out that Navy plays Army in every sport the two service academies field, but that is not the case with Air Force. The Midshipmen and Falcons do not meet in such high-profile sports as men's basketball and lacrosse.

"Army is our rival. We compete against them in everything we do, whether it's badminton or swimming or football," Niumatalolo said.

    http://www.hometownannapolis.com/news/NAS/2012/02/03-14/Navy-s-Niumatalolo-ponders-schedule-without-Air-Force.html

  220. Garret:

While they are trying to get Air Force to join, nobody is mentioning that the Big East actually gave concessions to Navy to make sure they could keep playing Air Force.

An important factor to keep in mind is that it won’t be Niumatalolo’s call, even if it comes to choosing between Air Force and other nonconference games. And it might not be an issue anyway – the Star-Ledger was one of the outlets that reported when Navy joined the Big East, concessions were made to allow the Midshipmen to continue to play Army and Air Force. Air Force asked for similar concessions from the Mountain West when the possibility of a nine-game league schedule was brought up last year.

    http://gazetteafasports.freedomblogging.com/2012/02/02/would-navy-dump-air-force-off-the-schedule-seems-very-unlikely/15561/

  221. Garret:

Half of the MWC indicated that they would prefer a 9-game conference schedule, but Air Force was one of the strong objectors to that because they wouldn't be able to keep scheduling their rivals. I know that the alliance talked about having 8 games on the MWC side and 1 crossover game vs. a CUSA team, which would effectively give 9 conference games. That would probably prompt Air Force to join the Big East.

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

We just took my son on his campus visit to UF. He is 5'10" and 225# hapa looking, so everyone thought he was a football visit until he stood next to the kids on football visits, but you are totally right about the feeling you get at "da Swamp", with the stadium in middle of the campus, etc. The air is so thick with tradition and students so absorbed in the Gator culture, that it doesn't matter that Tebow and Urb have moved on. Incredible place, chicken skin vibe.

  224. Garret:

Article about how UAB should go to the Sun Belt instead of joining the MWC/CUSA alliance. Look at the budget problem that some of the bottom-tier CUSA schools have...UAB's biggest rival is Memphis, so their numbers will look even worse after Memphis leaves. I would like it if schools like UAB left, since they will get equal shares of revenue without producing much for the conference, but UAB won't leave since they benefit from the CUSA's money without having to increase their budgets to upgrade their programs.

According to the school's latest NCAA financial report, UAB's athletics department lost $15.8 million in 2010-11 before subsidies from the university and student fees. That's $2 million more lost than a year earlier. Football alone lost $2.7 million, up from $1.7 million in 2009-10.

"I'd love from a geographic standpoint to be somewhere where we can save money in travel, and the Sun Belt is definitely one where we could save money," UAB coach Mike Davis said. "But that's not my call."

    http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/02/with_rival_memphis_leaving_c-u.html

  225. Garret:

MWC Presidents seem to be wanting to have the merger done already.

"I think there needs to be a decision soon," UNLV athletic director Jim Livengood said Thursday. "I don't think we can have a lot more meetings. I know Neal (Smatresk) believes that as well.

"I'm very much in favor of having the two conferences together."

    http://www.lvrj.com/sports/mountain-west-conference-usa-to-discuss-merger-139035019.html

  226. Garret:

It sure sounds like UNLV would leave the MWC/CUSA conference if they were invited to the Big 12, Pac-12, etc...

"Our responsibility is to do the best thing for UNLV," Livengood said. "We have a wonderful university in a wonderful city of great size and great interest in intercollegiate athletics. I think we're very marketable. Now I don't want that to be misinterpreted that we're out trying to shop UNLV.

"I want us to be active members in whatever conference we're in. I really believe that we need to be all in. In other words, all of our programs need to be in one place."

  227. BigHiloFan2:

I wanna be in UNLV's conference. so wat they got a crappy sandlot parking stadium. its only a 29 min. drive to downtown lites. :D worth the trip.

    Feature article on Coach Chow.

With his first recruiting effort behind him, Norm Chow, the University of Hawaii’s new head football coach, is working with university officials on a plan to drum up donations and corporate support for the football program. He also is thinking about some charitable causes he may help champion.

In an exclusive interview with PBN, Chow said he understands that his job as UH’s head football coach goes beyond winning games and includes helping raise money for the football program and the entire athletic department, which operates on a $30 million budget.

  230. Garret:

The NCAA may solve UH's problem of not getting kickoffs far enough down field.

The NCAA football rules committee has proposed moving kickoffs from the 30-yard line to the 35 and to limit the running start by players on the kicking team to 5 yards as a way of keeping players safer.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/colleges/ncaa-proposed-moving-kickoffs-from-30-yard-line-to-35-to-keep-players-safer/2012/02/09/gIQALVzZ2Q_story.html

Mt. San Antonio offensive line / tight ends coach Keola Loo has been added to the staff as the offensive graduate assistant.
