MWC, C-USA to merge
By Stephen Tsai
It's official: The Mountain West Conference and Conference USA will merge beginning in the summer of 2013.
Here's Ferd Lewis' story: Merger.
So, here are the questions:
• Will UH have to pay travel subsidies?
Well, probably.
• What happens to the MWC's television contracts?
They get scrapped, and negotiations begin anew.
• Teams from Carolina and Hawaii in the same league, really?
Yes. Sorta. There likely will be geographical splits, so don't expect too many crossover trips.

According to the Birmingham News, an NCAA working group is studying the feasibility of bringing back athlete-only dorm with unlimited food, allowing coaches to publicly discuss recruits even during the recruiting process, and allow transfers in all sports to play immediately.
Not sure how the dorm would impact walk-ons, or if there is enough available housing for UH to establish such a dorm.
Here's the link: NCAA considerations.
* * * * *
There is a breakup. Both agree to keep in touch, maybe to meet up again.
The reality is there will be no keeping in touch, no meeting up again.
And as the farewell tour of opponents continues this semester, despite good intentions, there also will be no keeping in touch, no meeting up again.
If Boise State's football team decides to bolt from the Mountain West this summer, a year earlier than expected, then the only meeting between the Broncos and Warriors will be if they exchange Farmville requests. The Broncos don't want to play in Hawaii, and UH doesn't want to play in Boise. After all, the teams did not meet as non-conference opponents in 2011. UH will never play home-and-home series against San Jose State, Utah State, New Mexico State, Idaho or Louisiana Tech. Those schools don't draw enough for the Warriors to relinquish a home date.
But, hey, they can still be friends.

Volleyball Warriors drop to No. 13 in this week's AVCA poll.
Next up: Top-ranked UCLA this weekend.

That was a devastating fire on the Lower Campus, which destroyed the building housing personnel, financial and payroll records for the entire UH system. Some firefighters scaled the neighboring Stan Sheriff Center roof to direct fire strategy.

Happy birthday to UH athletic trainer Jessica Oshiro.

There is an interesting article in the 2/6/12 issue of ESPN The Magazine about the correlation between getting top prep recruits and winning games. Two studies have found that the connection between the two is weak. The bottom line is that some coaches are better at identifying players suited for their system and developing their skills no matter what the star rating is for the player. The article concludes by saying "The emerging research says we'd do better to evaluate programs by how they develop talent, not how they find it. It turns out coaching is really about coaching, not recruiting."
Coach Chow said that he landed the three best local players. When questioned about his statement, he responded that what SA prints as the top ten local recruits is SA's list not his.
Go get'um Coach Chow!
Go Warriors!!

Schweet! NCAA to allow "Jock dorms" with unlimited food, just like when I went to college in 1968-71. Back then people worried about the athletes having a "sense of entitlement" because of the jock dorms. Well I think most people close to athletic programs may agree that that ship sailed a long time ago.

The rule changes might be a good thing, but it looks as though the wealthy schools will continue to have the advantage. Same as it ever was.
Reading the article and the comments section, I have to agree, sometimes it seems the NCAA's biggest job is to justify its own existence. They're getting paid a lot of money, so they need to change things just to show they're "on the job".

DaveLM: That must apply to basketball too: Harvard went after Jeremy Lin, even though other schools like Stanford, UCLA, and even the other Ivy league schools didn't think too much of him even after leading his team over Mater Dei HS for the state championship. He turned out to be what the coaches envisioned.
Football coaches like Petersen at Boise State must have that inner ability to recognize talent that fits into his system. I'm confident Norm Chow has that skill also.
February 13th, 2012 at 7:43 am
I can see putting all of the freshmen together, but after a while, older players probably would prefer to live off campus.
February 13th, 2012 at 7:44 am
There is housing with (seemingly) unlimited food and laundry service.
It's called home.

DPK, I think Garret said that he will be busy for the next few days and cannot post. I would like to read his thoughts.
February 13th, 2012 at 7:47 am
Lin has proven that teams can succeed with pass-first point guards. (Why does Lin remind me of Mark Campbell?)
I think UH has the right formula: Quick point guard, an outside shooter, a hustling wing guy and two active posts. It's not too late.
February 13th, 2012 at 7:48 am
I think it was Coach Price who said that the big schools were living off steak and Hawaii was eating hot dogs or something similar.
February 13th, 2012 at 7:48 am
Haleakala: The article does mention Boise State. It says that in the past four years, Texas' recruits were rated higher than Boise's and Florida State's were rated higher than OK State's. Boise and OSU have a combined winning percentage of .867 compared to UT and FSU at .685.
The article also says that from 2006 to 2010, Frank Beamer and Brian Kelly each coached 15 players who were rated at two stars or less as recruits and they ALL were drafted by the NFL.
February 13th, 2012 at 7:53 am
Oh, we can figure this out for ourselves.
First, are the proposals good? Second, are they fair?
It seems like a train of thought is: If we can't enforce things, let's legalize them. With the internet, there are so many loopholes that it would be impossible for the NCAA to police all of the rules. But by legalizing these things, does it make it right? It's one thing for Mike MacIntyre to say he's interested in a player; it's another for Nick Saban to talk about what he could do for a recruit. Then again, it also opens the way for negative recruiting. Northern Colorado opponents can say to recruits: Do you really want to go to a school that smells like cow poop?
February 13th, 2012 at 7:56 am
What's interesting is there are fewer college football programs and fewer football scholarships than 25 years ago, but is there more equity?

Last Call, I agree on #14, it's surprising that nothing has been reported (locally or nationally) about yesterday's MWC-CUSA presidents meeting. It was their second in-person meeting to discuss changes that will have a huge impact on the future of at least 16 Division 1 athletic programs and their associated FBS football programs.
February 13th, 2012 at 8:04 am
allowing transfers to run amuck would only give the bcs bullies an open market to pluck talent from lesser schools or their sibling rivals.
if they do that they may as well give compensation to the school who is being displaced.
February 13th, 2012 at 8:07 am
coaches blurting out recruits name is the least harmful of all the proposals, after all even in little old remotely displaced hawaii the public finds out who the recruits are.

athlete only dorms...well, not too bad. i am sure that coaches with a handle on team discipline wouldn't mind such. however, further regulations should be employed, such as limiting room square footage, amenities and such.
others like unlimited food already probably exists.ert
if you figure this out and its rather simple, who is driving these proposals?
certainly wouldn't be the have nots. the bcs is unconstitutional if you ask me. here is just another example of such. the smaller schools need to band together and hire legal counsel to prevent any of these changes. take em to court, take to congress.
its time.

C-USA, MWC dissolving to form new league
Posted on: February 13, 2012 2:15 pm
Edited on: February 13, 2012 2:26 pm
The institutions from Conference USA and the Mountain West are dissolving both leagues to create their own conference, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com.
The new conference will start in the 2013-14 academic year. Conference USA and the Mountain West would continue as is for the 2012-13 season.
The reason that the institutions are dissolving and forming their own league and not just merging is for legal reasons, sources said.
The new league – which is yet to be named – is expected to consist of Southern Miss, Marshall, East Carolina, UAB, Tulsa, Rice, UTEP and Tulane from C-USA and Wyoming, Air Force, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii from the MWC. Hawaii would be a football-only member, making a 15-team all-sports conference and a 16-team football conference.
Temple also is a possibility as the school was contacted by Conference USA, sources told CBSSports.com, when the Big East last week opted to invited Memphis instead of Temple.
CBSSports.com's Dennis Dodd first reported last month about the possibility of the leagues dissolving and forming their own league.
Both leagues have suffered significant losses. BYU went independent last season, while TCU is leaving for the Big 12 and Boise State is leaving for the Big East, possibly this summer. C-USA also lost Houston, UCF, SMU and Memphis to the Big East, starting in 2013.

Good morning Tsaikos!
More crap from the NCAA for the have-nots to deal with. Does that include the non-revenue sports too? I'm sure Charlie Wade would love to have a training table for his team.
For all the action that went on this weekend locally, especially at Lower Campus, did BC even mention anything?
Apologies to ST, but I've had enough of all this Jeremy Lin stuff.
February 13th, 2012 at 9:42 am
Does the merger/new league rip up or alter the travel deal UH has with the MWC?
February 13th, 2012 at 9:43 am
Howzit, everyone!
Too bad about that lingering fire at UH. Funny, though, first thing that popped into mind was, "So THAT's how they're gonna make room for new buildings!"
Every time the NCAA makes an announcement, my head spins. They are too deep into the pockets of the BCS and treading water fiercely to avoid sinking. I'm agreeing with Al (#30 above) on this one. BCS schools are just trying to "legalize" what they already secretly (illegally) do. This will just give them a bigger advantage. And allowing transfers to play immediately will lead to rampant poaching of top players from everywhere.
I feel sick. TV and the BCS is running the whole show. Way past time for congressional action.
February 13th, 2012 at 9:46 am
Thinking about this new conference merger...
They obviously have been talking with tv too, or this whole realignment idea would not have gotten off of the ground. Don't know what will happen to CUSA's tv deal, but at least the MWC will (I'd hope) get a better deal. If so, then paying these travel subs may be covered with increased revenue, and it'll all wash out.
We'll see...

February 13th, 2012 at 9:58 am
westside warrior...it will not be a merger of the two existing conferences. they are creating a new conference in it and by itself.
the underlying factors could be conference rules and regs as well as the bylaws that will be implemented that governs all.
the driving force could be (and probably is) the ability to shake the old mwc tv deal, which sucks, and be able to open bids and/or renegotiate a new contract under the new conference.
February 13th, 2012 at 10:07 am
Except for Fresno State, Nevada, and Air Force which may be leaving, there are no big draws to Aloha Stadium in the new league. We need to get some independents to Aloha Stadium which will draw the crowds such as BYU, Navy, possibly Notre Dame and some Pac 12 teams.
February 13th, 2012 at 10:11 am
Happy birthday, Jessica Oshiro!
February 13th, 2012 at 10:18 am
Yeah, Al, that's what I meant. The dissolving of both conferences to create a new super conference that should throw out all the old, junk stuff that was related to both former conferences... thus allowing this new conference the ability to pursue better yada, yada, yada...
So much underlying stuff going on these days. But it should be a better overall deal for us, compared to that weak MWC tv deal. Let's just hope, and wait and see what happens.
February 13th, 2012 at 10:19 am
Wait... those big schools serve steak, but we serve hamburga steak! With extra scoops of rice and mac salad, and gravy all over! And if dat no work, we still get our fall back... SPAM!!!

This could be a recipe for disaster. If you keep moving east, when another tragedy happens — stock-market crash, high gas prices, spike in airfares — then it becomes a geographical issue. And if you're the school sitting in the middle of ocean, especially as a football-only member, guess who gets whacked first?

think letting transfers play right away is a bad idea. Changes the landscape of recruiting.
February 13th, 2012 at 10:57 am
I agree that the transfer proposal would not be good. Looking more closely, we may get some re-bounders, but we will probably get a lot more bounce backs.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:00 am
From the yesterday's 2009 Class I had listed Jack Sula who de-commit BSU and given a second chance signed with UH Nov 2008.
Question is what happen to Jack?
Where is Jack Sula playing football now?
February 13th, 2012 at 11:04 am
If they are serious about allowing transfers without penalty, the NCAA would have to stipulate a latest date by which a student athlete could declare that he will transfer to another school. Should be before spring training. I still don't think that it would be good for colllege athletics but if passed, would Taylor Graham and others who transferred this past season be allowed to play in the 2012 season?
February 13th, 2012 at 11:04 am
Athlete dorms and all that would include all sports no matter how SOME might feel the non-revenue guys and gals don't deserve anything.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:17 am
Letting transfers play would be good for UH. Guys at the big schools whowere rated high don't have playing time could play for UH right away. It probably wouldn't hurt UH the other way as much, i.e. movement from UH to mainland schools.
I always thought that forcing transfers to sit out one year was a violation of antitrust laws. when regular students transfer schools, even those on scholarship, they don't sit out from their classes for one year. Why is there a double standard for student athletes? There should be free movement among athletes. These are 17 and 18 year old kids making a big decision to go to a school and many times it is a mistake. They need to find the right fit and lots of times, they don't know what it is like until they actually matriculate at the school, find out what the coaches are like, etc. Why do they get punished and have to sit out for one year?
February 13th, 2012 at 11:18 am
Rebounder = Bounce backer
February 13th, 2012 at 11:27 am
cake noodle...a transfer can come in and be on scholie while he/she sits out the year. a transfer student/athlete will attend school but cannot participate in games. however, can practice with the team though.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:35 am
With all these NCAA decisions, when will we the NCAA make a decision on UH football season starting one week early? I believe MWC and UH were pushing for that.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:40 am
I'm sure the best for you designer outlet for promotion code
February 13th, 2012 at 11:42 am
So does it mean we might have been better off staying with the WAC?
February 13th, 2012 at 11:45 am
The transfer rule would only help us. Players who "rebound" from bigger schools are more talented than players who transfer out. I can't think of one big time player that played for Hawaii for a season to transfer to a different school successfully. Maybe Jantz but that was a unique situation. Example - Taylor Graham. Have we ever lost a qb with his talent?

February 13th, 2012 at 11:51 am
I would stop worrying about where Fanaika will end up - for sure, it won't be Hawaii.
February 13th, 2012 at 12:03 pm
Don't let them sit out a year. Allow them to play but for every year of eligibility that is left they will sacrafice 3 games. Those 3 games to be the last 3 of every season. So if transferring as a freshman with 4 years of eligibilty you will miss 12 games, a sophmore will lose 9 games etc. The last games are usually the one that determines the championship or bowl appearance. However the player is allowed to play in the bowl or championship game. If not that choice allow them to choose the current rules in place. The athlete and schools need some sort of consequences or this will get out of hand.
February 13th, 2012 at 12:06 pm
The changes are good for the MWC, they would have become extinct based on their current TV contract. Comcast cannot apparently or does not want to keep up with the competition. Like any business corporation dissolve and start anew.

keep it as is. you transfer, you sit out. the player made the commitment to the school. honor the commitment. if you like transfer then you sit.
naturally there are extenuating circumstances that do allow a player to transfer and not have to sit. forgot the details but it was brought up before. and i don't mean grad students.

Let's just say for argument sake they allow the one casino in Waikiki.
Where would it be? Would they now take the Ala Wai Golf course and make the the new mega casino? Seems like it is the only place in Waikiki that could have a facility and parking, or take down Jefferson School and the Waikiki Library area and re-do that?
Wow, traffic would be a mess.
If they do one casino, it has to have more than just slots and if they want the high rollers from the orient, they need that "James Bond Baccarat type gambling special salons.
I can't see it happening.
February 13th, 2012 at 1:04 pm
Traffic:
Horse racing at the Ala Wai sounds better for Traffic with a bridge over pass.
February 13th, 2012 at 1:07 pm
There is already a ready made on ramp for Ala Wai thru Kapiolani Blvd.
February 13th, 2012 at 1:09 pm
84,
I'm actually so sure he wont end up here that I would buy you lunch.
February 13th, 2012 at 1:10 pm
Horse Racing would pay a lot more taxes than Seniors paying peanuts to play golf a the the Ala Wai.
February 13th, 2012 at 1:12 pm
Hawaii would get an annual instant millionaire with Pick 6, 7, 8 plus a daily double bonus.
February 13th, 2012 at 1:13 pm
I would say no to a casino here. But a state lottery would be a different story. Think the state could make money off of that.
so how much scholies hawaii has left? 2?

Remaining WAC schools are lobbying to get into the new conference. If we go back to the WAC, there may be no one left.
Since we’ve got some of the airport conspirators in the new conference, hopefully they’ll be able to collaborate on the needed ground rules to get this thing to work.
February 13th, 2012 at 1:17 pm
If Fanaika doesn't want to be here, then sobeit...Move on...We only want TRUE Warriors!
February 13th, 2012 at 1:26 pm
al:
does it not surprise you that the "big time" schools are still offering Fanaika?
i was sure that they had used up all their alloted 25 new scholarships or if he signs school will pull a scholarship already alloted to a new player - be careful, there could be Smith like repurcussions - die has been cast - cost UH about $44K.
February 13th, 2012 at 1:31 pm
It's old news but it's nice that big shool like W Virgina can pay-off ransom in tune of $20 million to join Bigger Fish Bowl.

February 13th, 2012 at 1:47 pm
don't know if this change will be a better thing for UH. looking for news.
February 13th, 2012 at 1:50 pm
mr. ahouse...here's a young man who has in all sincerity not been able to make up his mind.
he does have hawaii in his top three or five. the lure of playing with a lot polynesians is important to him and has friends already scheduled to be here. ronnie fields and gus lavaka for example. throw in some family members as well.
yet, the big timers are still calling. kansas earlier, now florida, georgia, to start the sec gang rolling. lately, there are rumors that lsu, arkansas, and alabama are showing interest.
he tripped florida this weekend and left without giving an answer.
i believe he may have just one more trip left. does he burn it now???
traveling to any of the sec schools is just as far as we are to his hometown of sacramento, ca.
hawaii's advantage is the polynesian population, team members, food, and culture. oh, and now a staff that has many nfl ties and reputation.
the big time bcs guys are looking at fulfilling their depth charts whereas norm chow is looking for starters.
ray hisatake has filled his ears with "hawaii no ka oi".
we have two polynesian coaches, oops make that three, one old enough to "father" him and two big brother types. not to mention inoke funaki the grad assistant.
this young man has lots on his mind. it is a tough decision.
where can he fit in?
where can he get good coaching that takes you up a notch?
where can he go and be comfortable at the school and in the community?
i have a list of 100 more like these, but, it is obvious and yet diificult.
i seriously believe that he is praying on it right now, in fact.

will there be a conference championship game between division champs?
what bowl will the champion go to? aq?
February 13th, 2012 at 2:15 pm
Changing the rules in FCS and FBS would surely impact DIII athletics and to some extent NAIA schools as well.
Every season those levels will see a team or two surge in the rankings due to a "ringer" moving over from a DivI program and maintaining eligibility without sitting out a year.
Incidentally, Linfield is not an exception as the QB who led them to their last NC in 2004 threw 58 TD's after transferring from Utah. Brett Elliott suffered a leg injury in his So. year and transferred to the McMinnville campus in his Junior year.
Who was his replacement at Utah?
Alex Smith.

There is a possibility UH could play 15 games in a season.

not really slaves, but where these people come from, the money they make is sent home to support their family. kinda like the early sugar and pineapple workers. only in usa do they use the word slaves.

imagine back in the old days, they even had barefoot football league. amazing that injuries were minimal, but it is like sr softball today. play hard, have guud fun, then enjoy the refreshments and stories after the game.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:47 pm
Meanwhile, back to fooooootballlll!
USA today added...
"Logistics should also be an issue in the new league. The football conference will span from Honolulu to Greenville, N.C., a distance of more than 5,700 miles. Other sports would see travel from western cities Fresno and Reno to eastern locations in Birmingham and Huntington, W.V."
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2012/02/mountain-west-conference-usa-merger-talks/1
February 13th, 2012 at 4:00 pm
USA Today isn't paying attention. Regular season play will be in divisions. The western division schools won't play the eastern division schools until the championship game in football or the championship tournament in basketball, probably in a central location like Dallas. So there won't be any travel from Honolulu to Greenville or from Fresno to Huntington.
February 13th, 2012 at 4:01 pm
Interesting recruiting feud in the big ten.
Urban Meyer poached recruits committed to Michigan State, Wisconsin and Penn State after his arrival in Columbus.
And they didn't like it...evidently in the old days, they did not try to
go after other big ten rival's picks...
February 13th, 2012 at 4:01 pm
Now what will it be named? The Great America Conference, the Conference of America, Pacific to Atlantic Conference or continue to use Conference USA?
February 13th, 2012 at 4:04 pm
but no team can say they play coast to coast except the new conference teams. if da warriors have to make 5 trips away, each player will accumulate 5,000 miles or more per trip, so there's a good chance that after 4 trips, the 5th would be free or discounted. if da warriors are not chartering, this is one way to help defray the airfare cost.
February 13th, 2012 at 4:10 pm
How about "Battle Galactika"? for a conference name with punch.
February 13th, 2012 at 4:10 pm
whitey, also pay with da credit cards so can get miles. Can use 'em to bring in recruits. At least some of them for free with the miles. The credit line gotta be huge though, so we can pay with the card.
February 13th, 2012 at 4:10 pm
Is there any chance this new conference can get a deal with ESPN. And if they take away the sit out year for transfers it would ruin college football
February 13th, 2012 at 4:10 pm
halekala, maybe should have contest to name conference. mine would be "mountains usa". the width of the conference covers all the major mountains in the usa. Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Haleakala, Sierra Madres, Rockies, Ozarks, and Smokey Mountains.
February 13th, 2012 at 4:13 pm

February 13th, 2012 at 4:14 pm
I don't think the new conference can add any more WAC members as they all have less than the minimum attendance to remain in Div 1. Unless we invite the new Texas schools. I forget what the minimum attendance number is but I think Idaho, New Mexico State, San Jose State all don't qualify.
February 13th, 2012 at 4:16 pm
ppj, good idea, but do you think uh will consider something like that. they get sum free passes from Hawaiian, so that is a huge help. what would the bank say when you send in 100 credit applications all with different names, but with same address. not to shabby to start the year off with 30,000 miles per person for da warriors. of course get the annual fee of $60 per person, but that minor since you get one free trip to start with. i like your idea.
February 13th, 2012 at 4:16 pm

Allowing transfers to play will hurt Hawaii and schools like it.
Our best players can transfer to BCS schools-- the PAC 12 say.
Recruiting will become a new game and the non ACQ schools will be like the JC's are now.
I don't think they will allow it.
February 13th, 2012 at 4:32 pm
ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
Maybe the football team will have to get some naming rights money from some major airlines so that their charter flights are cheaper...e.g., Hawaiian Air Warriors, UA Warriors, Southwest Warriors, etc. It would be kind of nuts if a foreign flag carrier bid for the naming rights...Lufthansa Warriors, El Al Warriors....
February 13th, 2012 at 4:52 pm
New conference name?
CCC - Cross Country Conference
EWC - East West Conference
-or-
PAC-16 - Pacific Atlantic Conference (haha PAC-12, we beat you to 16 teams)...

February 13th, 2012 at 5:19 pm
#169, Good suggestion on "outside the box thinking." We gotta look into it and beat everybody else to it. Would be kind of weird calling them Alaska Airlines Warriors or by any other name, but may supply the team/state/school with added income. Even more "outside the box" how about we buying our own 747 or jet and bringing the fans along for a fee with the extra seats (I think I may be getting carried away on this). With creative scheduling, we could use it to travel with the other teams too, including the ladies.
February 13th, 2012 at 5:21 pm
A rumor was floating around on various message boards yesterday that the new conference's tentative working name (subject to change) will be the National Conference.
I like that because it means whoever wins a conference title in any sport will be referred to as the National Champion.
February 13th, 2012 at 5:22 pm
Interesting to look at Mack '09 recruiting class. Turned out to be a great class! I never did question Mack as a recruiter, he did bring in a lot of talented players. His main issue was he was not a great game manager and motivator. We had the talent last year to win the WAC and that was the reason he is no longer here. It was not because he couldn't recruit.
February 13th, 2012 at 5:23 pm
I wonder if TV announcers will end up shortening that to the "NatCon" and calling conference winners the "NatCon champions".
February 13th, 2012 at 5:27 pm
I was wondering whether Nike was giving ST some kind of stipend for their daily ads on the blog. I guess not.
February 13th, 2012 at 5:29 pm
I am hoping Alaska Airlines will paint one of their planes with the H logo much as they have with other schools' logos -- WSU, UW, BSU, . . .
February 13th, 2012 at 5:29 pm

Danny and McGarrett are fighting for UH football season tickets. Haha too funny
February 13th, 2012 at 5:45 pm
wafan...methinks alaska air has some kind of contract with them to handle their flights and/or charter. they wouldn't have a hawaii logo emblazoned on its fuselage nor its tail as long as we have an advertising deal with hawaiian air.
could you imagine an alaska airlines jet flying over the hawaiian airlines field at the aloha stadium on game with the big "h" logo on its tail?
i don't think so.
February 13th, 2012 at 5:46 pm

Yep! No problem with food going bad. Just put everything in a cooler and leave the cover open in the garage. Voila! Frozen solid. Minor problem was no problem -- living in the dark was not so bad since I am in the dark most of the time anyhow.
The worst part was being disconnected from technology.

I do not think it is good for a coach to pick sides in a personal dispute among players-- playing favorites or whatever. It only makes things worse-- I have seen it happen.
Team discipline requires that those things be resolved outside the team and not poison the team or interfere with team unity.
The coach can encourage players to talk things through and resolve differences among themselves-- captains can do that. If both sides want it, the coach can mediate to try to bring players together. But no matter what those things cannot become a problem at practice or on the field.

@167 IpuMan -- the mileage-being-taxed story I think you saw is where a certain bank was giving out miles to people who opened an account with the bank. Different from the regular way of earning FF miles, which hasn't become taxable.... And slightly different idea, at least with one of the airline mileage programs around now, if you have that airline's branded credit card, you can receive miles from whoever wants to give them to you, family or friends.
February 13th, 2012 at 7:26 pm
Hope that the ugly MWC logo gets lost in the merger
Conference of America as I proposed several years ago still is my choice

Wafan: I guess that kind of problem makes you appreciate the Hawaiian weather that much more. Bettah come home!
February 13th, 2012 at 7:30 pm
We talked to Thom Kaumeyer today - I can see why He was Norm's pick as DC. Much like chow philosophy of keeping it simple for the QB, Kaumeyer will keep it simple on defense and focus on fundamentals only in Spring and then decide if we will go into a 4-3 or 3-4. He wants everyone to know that Spring practice is open to everyone!
February 13th, 2012 at 7:32 pm
Regarding the new name for thwe conference - How about "Conference USA?"
February 13th, 2012 at 7:32 pm
I think it would be interesting to travel to Hattiesburg or Huntington to catch a UH game.

another running backs coach position has been filled.
Montana: Student assistant and former player and NFL running back Justin Green has been named running backs coach filling the spot of Mick Delaney who recently retired.
February 13th, 2012 at 9:07 pm
@206. kaumeyer will keep it simple? Did you ask the follow-up question as what he means by simple? running a 4-3/3-4 isnt keeping it simple. both defenses have multi-looks, assignments and special packages for each field position, situation and down. the last coordinators for UH that kept it simple were co-defensive coordinators george lumpkin and rich miano in 2004. That defense gave up 499 points! The most points allowed in a season by a UH defense in the history of Hawaii football.
February 13th, 2012 at 9:13 pm

@221 - First of all, This was our first interview with Thom so it wasn't the right time to question him on what he said. As we develop a relationship with him, we can go deeper into his strategy. As far as the process of a 3-4 or a 4-3 I think he understands that. Keeping it simple was targeted towards Spring camp.
February 13th, 2012 at 10:07 pm
...and I think you're a little off on Miano being the Co-defensive Coordinator in 2004...

wow. uku pila teams. Southern Miss, Marshall, East Carolina, UAB, Tulsa, Rice, UTEP and Tulane from C-USA and Wyoming, Air Force, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii from the MWC. Hawaii would be a football-only member, making a 15-team all-sports conference and a 16-team football conference.
per PPJ 162.
he suspects Idaho, New Mexico State and San Jose State have attendance issues. they're not on the list.

re: Lumpkin & Miana as co-defensive coordinators....the reason why the defense yielded so many pts.....ha..ha..look at the defensive coordinators....two simpletons who hadn't the slightest clue as to what they were doing or what the other were doing.....and yet, people were campaigning for Miana to be Defensive Coordinator or H.C. Thank God that didn't materialize....AMEN!

Morning and Happy Valentines Day, all you Tsaikos!!!
I like "Conference America". Then, if we can get permission, we can be the only conference with a real mascot... Captain America! Hahaha! Okay, gotta make coffee now and wake up!
February 14th, 2012 at 3:08 am
Wafan... middle schooler? Looks more like someone's pre-k kid was playing with some Lego Duplo blocks.

Happy Valentine's Day to you and your loved ones.
February 14th, 2012 at 7:08 am
#247, Wes'side Warrior, that would be a great marketing approach for the conference! Just gotta make a deal with Marvel Comics. Use the money that would otherwise be spent on creating some expensive and clunky new conference logo, and make the logo Captain America's shield. I like it!
