Bittersweet 16

In 1994, the presidents of the WAC voted to add six teams, increasing membership to 16 teams beginning in 1996. A quadrant system was created in which four-team groups would pair to create two rotating eight-team divisions each year. But by 1998, seven pre-expansion WAC members and UNLV met in a Denver airport conference room to plot their secession from the WAC to form the Mountain West Conference in 1999.

It was significant that several of the presidents who voted for expansion weren't around for the implosion. And several presidents who met in that Denver conference room weren't around by the MWC's fifth birthday.

Which brings us back to the future. The merger of the MWC and C-USA was agreed out of necessity, a strength-in-numbers approach. Whether this version of the 16-team model can overcome the obstacles of the WAC's version — mainly, geography — will be known in a few years. Any chance for success rests on the architects— the current MWC and C-USA leaders — being around for several more years. After all, the best way to address structural problems is to consult with the original designers.

* * * * *

Our friend Vinny Lopes at offtheblockblog.com notes that BYU lead the nation in home attendance for men's volleyball matches.

Here's his list:

1. BYU — 4,595

2. Hawaii — 2,869

3. UC Irvine — 1,509

4. Penn State — 1,052

5. USC — 950

6. Long Beach State — 752

7. Loyola — 706

8. UCLA — 686

9. Lewis — 634

10. Pepperdine — 601

Here's a link to his story: MVB attendance.

All of which brings us to the question: What the heck?

UH should be leading in that category. So here are some suggestions on how to boost interest:

1. Shorten the matches. UH is the only place where there is an extended break between the second and third sets. The original intent was to preview KHNL's news. Well, Oceanic now has the rights and doesn't have a newscast. Also, the timeouts, which are 1 minute everywhere else, are 1:45 in the Stan Sheriff Center. There have been many times when a coach is finished addressing the team and there's still a minute to kill.

• Re-work the script. There's a specific order for entertainment during breaks. At the bottom of the list is the Rubberband Man's routine.  Move him up to, say, the second set. That will get the crowd going earlier. In the last match, he wasn't summoned until the timeout right before aloha ball in what would be UC Irvine's three-set sweep. Well, at least the fans were cheery en route to the parking structure.

• Flip the sides. I always calls the office with the turnstile count, and I always receive the same reaction: Yeah, right. That's because most of the fans sit behind the team benches. In volleyball, the cameras are not facing the bench. The original intent was because the TV commentators didn't want to sit on the same side as the up judge (who was blocking the view of the full court). By shooting from behind the benches, home viewers are looking at  sparse background. There really is more interest than what appears on the TV screen.

  9. HawaiiMongoose:

I think the WAC-16's big mistake was creating rotating quads. That approach created lots of confusion and broke up traditional rivalries. The new CUSA-MWC conference is planned to have separate eastern and western divisions with very few regular season crossover games. The concept is to play within your division until the conference championship game in football or the conference championship tournament in basketball. That minimizes travel for all of the teams and allows traditional rivalries to be preserved.

  11. Jon:

Stephen - I read somewhere that Craig Thompson is interested in the Minnesota AD job. Is he going to be gone soon? Is the new MWC/CUSA league possibly interested in bringing on Karl Benson?

I know a lot of people have been dissatisfied with Benson because of all the problems the WAC has gone through the last few years but I feel he has done an excellent job of continually reinventing the WAC through turbulent times. Really, no one could have done better because the WAC has always simply lacked leverage. The Coup he tried last year with BYU that fell apart because of FSU and Nevada was bold and imaginative.

I feel for Benson. It's actually the school presidents who make the calls. Benson has to make the most within the parameters they set.
He does remind me of Billy Beane. He goes out and finds so many developing programs — Boise State, Nevada, etc. — and then other conferences come in and poach them.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

This new conference - I hope the TV package will be lucrative.

And I hope the travel subsidies will be done away with should the TV package be a good one.

QUESTION: In the past, didn't we have to pay "appearance" fees for teams that came to Hawaii? Or did that apply to only non-conference games?

  16. ai-eee-soos:

    Hope it works: " ... a strength-in-numbers approach, agreed out of necessity ... "

  17. Stephen Tsai:

    Tom Mui:
    Only to non-conference games.
And sometimes the money was returned the next year. I think Michigan State got something like $350,000 to pay here, but UH received the same amount to play in East Lansing the following season.

  18. Stephen Tsai:

With the conference championship game, which could be UH's 14th game of the season, does that mean it would need to win eight game to qualify for a bowl?

  19. Garret:

    ST,

The rule about winning records has officially been waived for teams that play in conference title games.

  20. Garret:

It is nice to be able to check the blog again. We had a great visit with Momo since Friday and I hope that his flight back to Hawaii is going smoothly right now.

    #s 8 and 13 -

    Ur killing me! LMFAO!

  22. Garret:

Most years the football season consists of 14 weeks.

Currently, schools in a conference with a title game (like Colorado last year) that take advantage of the Hawaii Exception play 13 straight weeks and then the 14th week is reserved for a conference title game.

If there is a semifinal round, that could occur on week 13 and the conference final game could occur in week 14. That would mean that no MWC/CUSA school would have a bye week and they would all play the first 12 weeks of the season...that means that even Hawaii wouldn't be able to use the Hawaii Exception.

I know that UH and the MWC are asking for an extra week, but the NCAA hasn't approved it yet and the rule being proposed would be a competitive advantage for 13 schools and give the other 120 or so a big disadvantage, so there is no guarantee it will pass.

So, under the proposed system does that mean that UH will no longer have bye weeks AND UH will no longer use the Hawaii Exception? 1 less home game will also mean less revenue for UHAD.

  23. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Garret -

Good to see you back! Have you had a chance to read and analyze the potential NCAA rule changes? We enjoy confirmation from a rocket scientist when expecting the worst.

  24. Garret:

The Wall Street Journal featured a photo of Vili in their article about the MWC/CUSA combo.

Their article has the headline: "Hawaii and East Carolina: Together at Last"

  25. Garret:

UTEP's President said that they have discussed adding Utah State and Florida International to the new conference, with UTEP's AD said that NMSU was also on the candidate list. Geographically, NMSU would be great for UTEP...but I don't think that NMSU is high on the candidate list.

    http://www.utepprospector.com/conference-usa-mountain-west-join-forces-in-all-sports-1.2778105#.TzqTYVzy9w9

  26. Garret:

    DPK,

There are a lot of rule changes being proposed so I'm not sure which ones you are referring to. I posted an article about the rule changes that include moving the kickoff up 5 yards last week, saying that it would help UH's problems with the short kickoffs.

  27. Garret:

One thing that should be remembered is that the MWC breakaway schools reportedly didn't include UH because UH had stopped paying travel subsidies. Several MWC Presidents mentioned the lack of travel subsidies to Hawaii back then.

UH used to pay for half of the people traveling to Hawaii for conference games when UH was in the WAC until they stopped the subsidies...the deal now is for UH to pay for all of the people traveling to Hawaii for conference games.

UH pays for nonconference opponents to travel to Hawaii, but as ST pointed out the nonconference opponents pay UH an equal amount when UH travels to the opponent's stadium for the home-and-home deals. In other words, UH has been paying UNLV a certain amount to play at Aloha Stadium, but UH has been getting the same amount from UNLV when UH plays in Vegas. Now, UH will pay UNLV's travel expenses to go to Hawaii but UNLV will not pay UH anything when UH plays in Vegas.

  28. Garret:

UH needs to make deals with certain schools where all of those schools agree that they would stick together if/when some of the MWC/CUSA schools form a breakaway conference. UNLV, Nevada, and Fresno would be the first 3 I would choose due to geography and rivalries. I would love to include SDSU in that but they are gone.

  29. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Garret -

These are the rules I was referring to:

    http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/02/ncaa_takes_a_crack_at_slimmer.html

It doesn't look good for the have nots.

  30. wait a minute:

    Garret,

In the past, UTEP was opposed to having NMSU in their conference. I think it's because they schedule them just about every year anyway and if it becomes a conference game then they need to look for another non-conference game. Similar to how JD worked to schedule a series with UNLV and now has to look for non-conference games to replace what is now a conference game.

  31. Garret:

    wait a minute,

UTEP used to no want NMSU in their conference...but that was when conferences were looked at as being ways to be above other opponents and schools didn't worry about travel expenses. Now, UTEP is looking at a conference stretching from Hawaii to the East Coast and they are hoping to minimize travel time.

UTEP's President and AD have specifically mentioned in at least 4 different interviews that one big reason they support the new conference is because it will reduce class time missed for their students. Flying to Hawaii is NOT going to reduce class time missed, but taking that short drive to Las Cruces will.

The concerns about travel costs and travel time are things that people didn't talk much about before but UTEP is talking about it constantly now. NSMU looks good to UTEP now.

  32. WarriorNY:

This merger is only good for Hawaii if we get that extra week before the season. I have a feeling this conference is going to turn just like the old WAC and split back up based on the wants of the schools that bring in the most money...

The best thing we can do for ourselves is to just win and bring recognition and relevance to the program...

    ST,
Have you had any conversations with our new defensive staff? Any clues on how our defense will look this year?

Off topic - Floyd Mayweather is an idiot... Hope you all are having a great day...

  33. Garret:

    DPK,

I actually figured out what you were saying after I posted, but needed some time to think about it some more. I think that the new rules are a way for the rich conferences to distinguish themselves from the other conferences.

Athlete-only dorms...the dorms for SEC, Pac-12, Big 12, and Big 10 athletes would SHAME what UH would do. UH might not have the space or money to build an athlete-only dorm, which would make things 10x worse for facility comparisons between big-budget and small-budget schools.

Unlimited food provisions...who can afford the best, healthiest, prime food the best?

Who can afford to pay for more off-campus recruiters? UH's problem is a limited budget limits what their recruiters can do now...UH's recruiting budget would fall even further behind with that rule.

Allowing schools to give tickets to professional sporting events to their athletes...how many NFL, NBA, or MLB teams play in Hawaii? If a recruit grows up in San Diego for example, and is a lifelong Chargers fan, how much of an advantage would it be for SDSU to be able to give him 50-yard-line tickets to Chargers games?

  34. Garret:

Even if UH gets an extra week of the season, that would give 15 weeks for the season...13 games plus a semifinal plus a final game would mean playing 15 straight weeks without a bye week. That would be really tough on the players, especially for their school work, and would really tax team depth due to injuries.

  35. wait a minute:

    Garret,

That's the thing about NMSU not being in the same conference - no travel time for a *non-conference* game.

  36. LizKauai:

  37. RedZone:

So we create the bittersweet 16 then the big boys will be able to see who the powers in the conference will be. Then the poaching will continue. Then what?

  38. Garret:

Athlete-only dorms also isn't a great fit for UH since UH seems to have a higher percentage of married players and players with kids. An athlete-only dorm would NOT be a great place to raise a newborn baby.

A lot of schools have married student housing which is available for all students (not just athletes). That is a great option because it is off-campus (but nearby with a shuttle constantly running to/from campus), 2 or 3 bedrooms (depending on the size of the family), with great kitchen/living room/dining room setup. Basically, it is like having a VERY nicely furnished apartment with a shuttle to campus for a little more than the price of a dorm room...I know that a lot of graduate scholarships to Texas actually cover the cost of married student housing, one hidden way they attract top grad students.

If UH could afford to build married student housing (and could find a cheap location in Manoa), that would be a great benefit for ALL married students and would be huge for athletes. Unfortunately, I know that is a dream...

  39. Garret:

    wait a minute,

With conferences looking to go to 9 conference games, there are less nonconference games now. With the MWC/CUSA conference looking for one "crossover" game, would UTEP prefer that their crossover game be against NMSU or somewhere like Hawaii or East Carolina?

You do make a good point about nonconference travel. UTEP however seems to have changed their tune about NMSU, for whatever reason.

  40. Garret:

    RedZone,

TCU, Utah, BSU, SDSU, SMU, Houston, UCF, etc. were all poached anyway. What the new conference will do is serve as a feeder school to bigger budget conferences when they need new schools. Kind of like what the WAC served to the MWC.

It is hard to get a great TV deal if the TV network knows that your most attractive schools will leave if they get an invitation to the Pac-12, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, or even the Big East. But big budget conferences also have their pecking order, which is why the Big East got picked apart and the SEC and Big 10 gets the schools that they want from other big budget conferences.

  42. Garret:

Isn't UH the only place where all the men's volleyball matches are shown on live TV? Most places don't have TV involved, so they have short breaks. UH can get the breaks shortened...but the TV revenue will decrease accordingly. Increased attendance may make up for that, though.

  43. A-joe:

Hawaii should renegotiate their travel subsidy deal with the new conference to where members pay at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the cost to come to Hawaii. Make members commit to some form of payment. For Hawaii to pay for everything cheapens our value and our pockets. The bargaining chip for Hawaii would be members wont have to subsidize Hawaii when they travel.

Or Hawaii could flip it. Hawaii covers their cost to travel here. But members pay 1/3 of Hawaii's return trip. Hawaii would have a better chance of getting good travel and lodging deals on their end. Every year Hawaii should schedule at least one back to back conference away games. Especially to the east coast. Keep the team on the mainland and save on travel cost.

Gotta do something. This all for nothing is junk.

    Good morning Tsaikos!
    Happy Valentines Day!

ST, agree with all your points about Warrior volleyball attendance, especially since BYWho plays in a glorified HS gym. Last year, UH was serving from the back wall surrounded by fans.

Maybe the 10 minutes can be shortened to 5? Can still get the sponsor's game in, although some of them lately have been kinda lame.

  49. Stephen Tsai:

    Jm
I'd also close off the top level.
Turn the arena into a 5,000-seat venue for men's volleyball. Besides, can't see anything from the top.

Kansas City Chiefs: Romeo Crennel has announced his staff: ... Jim Zorn (QBs), ...

  52. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Hawaiian,

Agree about the travel expenses. At least figure how much it would cost teams to travel to Cali. Then have UH pay anything over that amount and one-night-only hotel costs.

  53. d1shima:

Saw the TV report on Coach Chow's Garden Isle visit.

  54. ai-eee-soos:

    # 53.

    That's a GOOD start.

  55. d1shima:

    Das true...gotta start somewhere.

  56. Garret:

My mistake, I just heard the full statements from UTEP's president instead of just reading excerpts and I think that it is clear that UTEP doesn't want NMSU to be in the same conference with them.

If WAC football dies and NMSU football goes away, that does eliminate the nonconference travel benefit though...

  57. Garret:

    A-Joe,

I agree with you on the travel subsidies. The sad thing is that UH doesn't have any real leverage--WAC football can be destroyed if the MWC/CUSA conference wants to poach teams from there.

  58. Garret:

    ST,

I can't get the broadcasts so I didn't know about how there are a lot of house ads. I agree that UH should look at shortening the breaks, but I don't think I've ever seen that happen once games start getting televised. Even regular prime-time shows have more commercials and less actual show time than they used to. Everybody wants the $$$.

  59. Garret:

9-game conference schedules and limiting nonconference games to September really hurt UH's chance to go indy. BYU cannot even schedule Utah in football anymore, for example.

  60. A-House:

If new conference will have 16 teams split into an East and West, how do you end up with 9 conference games?

Does that include a semi and final game? If 2 teams are tied for the division title, just flip a coin to determine who plays for the conference championship - would save $$ and in-class time for both schools. Why not have the champ for each division play for the conference championship game thus making 7 in-division games, including a 'cross-over' game, and the championship game. Thus, each school will play 7 or 8 games "max" and allow for out-of-conference games to reach the 12 or 13 game season including a "bye" week.

    Makes sense?

  61. Couch potato:

    happy vd!

Thus total first year compensation is $2.3 million. Incentives could add another $200,000 per year and he receives a 5% bump each year in his salary.

  73. papajoe2:

ST, I get the same thing from Oceanic with HBO and Showtime and pay less that $160. Better call them and complain. I think I had to sign a 2 year agreement though.

  74. papajoe2:

A-joe, What about UH just paying all the conference visitors a $100,000 flat rate (or slightly more)? They can use it as whatever they wish. Air or hotel or meals or 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, etc.. This will help them and also help us save money.

  75. papajoe2:

How much is it typically, for the cost a of a team to travel to Hawaii and play a football game anyway? I know the farther distance, the more it costs, but once in Hawaii, they all pay the same, depending if they stay at the Hilton or Ohana hotels.

  76. Buffoman:

Isaako Sopoaga, now there is a beast of a male specie. I believe he could dunk a basketball and probably bench until the weights themselves wore out. My goodness, if all our DTs were as powerful as this man, we'd absolutely clog the middle on any attempt to run the ball in that vicinity.

He was truly a terrific Warrior and will go down as one of the finest we've had (along with Larry Cole, the Nogas, John Woodcock, Levi Stanley, and company).

  77. SteveM:

    Good morning everyone

New soap athletic wear opera: "As the World Turns" or "As the Conferences mutate?" :?

Glad we have a football conference, though.

  78. Dave LetterMan:

ST, agree with papajoe2. You should call and have your account reviewed. My wife called and told them we couldn't afford what we had and wanted to cut out some services. The agent adjusted the cost of our bundle package and gave us our dvr free. With HawaiianTelcom coming on board with tv service, Oceanic is trying to keep their customers. Also, my wife found out that you can select your phone calling area: Oahu only, Oahu + neighbor islands, or Oahu, neighbor islands and mainland. With cell phones now we don't need the neighbor islands and mainland part. Just have to remember that otherwise you get charged by the minute.

  79. papajoe2:

On Pay Per View, we still have to watch their commercials. I paid $500, other people may be paying slightly less or same, but the businesses pay more (I hope) and they still have commercials. UH got $2.3 mil? Oceanic must be making a killing. My first ppv was at the Blaisdell Arena (HIC) for the 1st Ali-Frazier fight. No commercials at all.

  80. HawaiiMongoose:

Re #59, BYU's scheduling woes as an independent are becoming increasingly apparent. The Cougars just released their 2012 schedule. The good news is that in September and early October, it includes five home games against Washington State, Weber State, Hawaii, Utah State and Oregon State, and two away games against Utah and Boise State. The bad news is that after October 13th, it includes only ONE remaining home game, against Idaho on November 10th. That's offset with road games against Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, San Jose State and New Mexico State.

With the BYU-WAC scheduling agreement expiring after 2012, BYU's 2013 slate isn't shaping up to be any better. The Cougars have only seven games scheduled so far and only three are in Provo. There's one home game in September and two in October but none in November.

If BYU is having such difficulty with scheduling, imagine how UH would fare as an independent.

  81. Haleakala:

Winning sure makes a difference in determining whether a football program is desired by a BCS conference. Up until three or four years ago, San Diego State and SMU had year after year of losing records. They each brought in a new head coach and their programs turned around. The Big East would not have even considered inviting them to join the conference if the programs had continued their losing ways. Yes, winning sure does make a difference.

  82. Couch potato:

  83. papajoe2:

#81 Haleakala, gotta agree with you there. Didn't SMU have serious attendance problems inspite of winning records the last couple of years with horrible w-l record before such. I think tha was one of the major disapointments with JJ in the program. Couldn't be they got chosen because of their attendance. Maybe their basketball team will bring their new bucks conference. Or their big time boosters.

  84. cake noodle:

The merger of MWC and Conf USA looks good short term for UH but is very ominous long term.
    1. UH is the only school that is football only. Gets who gets squeezed when (not if) they require all schools to be in the conference for all sports.
    2. How do they keep all the members together? What's to keep them from splintering again?
    3. UH has absolutely no leverage and is at a disadvantage bc of travel costs.
    4. The only way UH can get leverage is if they have a great football team and the networks want to show UH football. We reached that status when June Jones was coach; UH was an ESPN darling bc of the great offense and JJ's name recognition. JJ was really a master with the ESPN folks. Look at SMU now; they get on TV all the tiem. Can we achieve the same with Norm Chow? Only time will tell.
    5. With 16 teams, UH matters even less. If UH was in an 8 or 9 team conference, and was a draw for networks, it has more leverage within the conference. With 16 teams ???
    6. I hope Donovan is planning for the future 3-4 years down the line; if UH is a strong football team then, it might consider going independent. then it can cut its own deals with ESPN and probably make more money.
    7. Depending on what the TV money is in the newly merged conference and whether they take away the Oceanic TV rights, here is a crazy scenario: It might make sense going back to the WAC for football only. No travel subsidies of $900,000 per year. UH gets to keep its Oceanic revenue. It can beat up on the WAC schools and schedule outside the conference for the bigger name schools or even continue to schedule UNLV, Fresno, BYU, Army, Navy, etc. Rebuild a winning record and winning culture.

  85. cake noodle:

#80, but BYU is making $9 million a year from its TV contract as an independent. It will get help scheduling games from the TV network.

  86. 808Bowler:

Morning everyone. Back to work I go.

  87. Ralph:

K State released its 2012 Football schedule today and it includes games against West Virginia and TCU. No waiting until 2013, WV is willing to pay the exit fee, Garret's numbers must be spot on and doable for WV to make the move next Fall.

  88. tom mui:

@84 cakenoodle I assume there is some penalty for leaving the conference so that UH won't be left in the lurch.

  89. Manoa:

I sometimes ask myself how sustainable are these big conferences. Will there always be a TV market strong enough to support all of those teams (imagine if TV revenues fall and you have to split a small pot 16 ways-- the big boys won't want to share!!).

  90. koakane ip4:

seems the powers heading up this new conference affiliation is using travel subsidies to Hi as an one of the insentive to join. I hope we are in the mix to guard gate our interest and not letting this slide. Just say let thing be equal, fair, up and up.

  91. madeinhawaii:

One way to look at independence is to look at all the independent schools and see if they would make a nice loosely held conference...

    Army
    BYU
    Navy
    Notre Dame
    Hawaii (if it went independent)

(these three if the WAC is no more)
Utah State (if not invited to the MWC)
NMSU (If not invited to the MWC should Hawaii go independent)
    SJSU

    Anyone else?
University of North Carolina at Charlotte will start their football program in 2013. They expect to be in the FCS for a couple of years as an independent prior to moving up to FBS.

  92. madeinhawaii:

Of course there's also UMass who will be entering FBS in 2013 too.

  93. d1shima:

The NFL draft is largely geared towards improving matchups within your Division, then Conference.

How does this new conference affect Coach Chow's approach to recruiting? Any "second thoughts" regarding this year's class after the announcement?

  94. Ralph:

I guess we will be seeing UNC Charlotte on our schedule sooner than later. JD seems to seek games with start up FB programs or ones moving up to D1- UC Davis, Lamar, Western Kentucky and South Alabama. I believe W. Kentucky's game was rescheduled to use the date for another game UH needed at the last moment. Wasn't Central Arkansas another program that moved up to D1 recently.

  95. Pride.:

#90 - Just speculating. Your Master's in Education wasn't in English was it? I figured that the English department lacked an adequate amoint of insetive to get you to join their program.

  96. HawaiiMongoose:

Re #85, BYU is getting that help already and the results are not impressive. The Cougar fans are becoming restless. A lot of posters on their message board sound almost desperate for BYU to join the Big East or Big 12.

WAC commissioner Karl Benson is expected to take the same position with the Sun Belt Conference, CBSSports.com has learned.

Benson, 60, has been in his current position since 1994. The recent instability of the league may have led to his decision to pursue the Sun Belt job. Current Sun Belt commissioner Wright Waters is retiring later this year.

A formal announcement on Benson is expected Thursday.

  110. Garret:

South Alabama fans were happy to see their shout out during H:50.

University of South Alabama Athletic Director Joel Erdmann said Tuesday that he was “one of the few people in the city of Mobile who failed to watch ‘Hawaii Five-O' last night.” He said when he woke up Tuesday morning he had 30 to 40 text messages and emails on his Blackberry referencing the episode.

Erdmann said his office had no prior notice that the football team’s game against Hawai’i would be referenced on the show.

“This was news to us,” he said. “Any time you get exposure like that it’s a benefit for everybody.

    “We’re glad it happened.”

  112. Garret:

Wow, that La Tech person who were talking about how Benson was going to interview for the Sun Belt job way back on January 22 had a really good birdie. The reaction among La Tech fans probably echoes what UH fans would have said when UH was in the WAC...

  113. Garret:

Benson is going to be the commissioner over North Texas...he sure tried enough times.

  114. Garret:

Benson was getting $441k from the WAC and the previous Sun Belt commissioner was getting $418k...my guess is that Benson took a pay cut because he knows that things may be pretty grim for the WAC.

Oceanic v. HawaiianTel. Hawaiian Tel is now in Salt Lake and is offering some sweet deals. But what caused me to pause was UH sports on OC, which are not available on HawaiianTel? Off the top, does anyone know the duration of the OC contract for UH sports?

  120. Keoniana:

One way to increase volleyball interest if not already implemented is to get the coaches and especially players involved in the community and student body.

I remember when I was a student in the 90's, I never watch Volleyball until I meet one of the players in my dorm, he was friendly and that got me rooting for him..

If the players and coaches visit the high schools, the communities, the student body and establish a relationship, that will certainly have people wanting to root for them and watch the games.

  121. Dave LetterMan:

Benson could say that as he tried to coordinate the ship's evacuation he tripped and fell into the dinghy (with his laptop in hand).

  122. mikey:

I'm sure BYU won't have any problem scheduling if this year is any indication with Oregon State, Norte Dame, and Georgia Tech right in the middle of October.

They all had bye on their schedule. BYU is waiting for 2013 conference schedule and fill in with whom ever has a bye.

Warriors should be booking Geo Tec and ND.

The main reason for football travel subsidizes is in general the other MWC teams are so junk their own fans don't care to see them. In general only UH benefits financially when playing conference games in a home and home type arrangement where you keep what you earn at the gate. If effect we are not subsidizing the travel, we are subsidizing the poor attendance MWC football teams are known for.

It may not be a bad idea for UH to eliminate men's volleyball if the replacement sport is men's soccer. The latter is hugely popular in the Big West, which features some of the strongest programs in the nation. Some conference matches draw over 10,000.

I would argue against that, the thing is I do not know the financial figures of what it costs to run men's volleyball plus what men's volleyball brings in via ticket revenue VS an unknown element like men's soccer, which most likely will be completely non revenue and how much it would cost to run that.

At least with men's volleyball, there some kind of return on the "investment" with their ticket revenue. Even though they may not break in the black, there is some kind of "dent" to the red, whereas men's soccer, like other non-revenue sports there is nothing coming in via ticket sales.

Plus, volleyball is a mainstay in Hawaii. All Charlie Wade and Co. need is a few good seasons. It won't take a TON to get more people in the SSC for men's volleyball.

Conference matches in the Big West may draw 10K+, but there is no way it will draw that at home matches in Hawaii.

  167. WarriorNY:

@165, I'm gonna be at the game at MSG on Friday night. Is that the game you're going to?

  168. oldtimer808:

Unreal Mr. Lin....27 points but the kicker was the fourth quarter and the game winning 3 pointer. He also had 11 assist tied his previous high. Struggled early but finished strong. He has to be the real deal.

  169. WarriorNY:

@165 (oh sorry) I thought you said "this next week"

  170. oldtimer808:

I agree with you Kevin....volleyball is a mainstay in Hawaii and men's volleyball does bring in revenue even if this season has been a down year. No way should we ever consider eliminating volleyball for soccer.

  171. WarriorNY:

    @168,
Anyone who can lead the Knicks to 6 straight wins... def the real deal....

  172. al:

kapakahi...i counted a few extra "seniors" as they have been recently listed on the active roster as such.

    chris gant
    brenden daley
    brandon leslie
    cecil doe

i am not sure if they used a redshirt last year or if they did indeed have that luxury.

also, i believe haku participated in only three games which could make a medical redshirt candidate for 2011.

there also could be some exodus on the part of some underclassmen after spring, during the summer, or after the 2012 season. not to be alarmed nor ashamed as this kind of thing is as natural an attrition as changing girl friends.

i imagine after spring camp some will decide to find another school as the depth charts post camp will be telling and enough to help one decide if this is still paradise. throw in an academic casualty or two and we could find ourselves with 20 or so scholies for 2013.

  173. kapakahi:

I thought that Gant, Daley & Doe redshirted last season....so should be juniors this coming season. Leslie would make 13 scholie seniors for this coming season.

Hoping you're right on Haku but not optimistic since NCAA didn't grant Brashton extra medical redshirt year.....since NCAA didn't accept after-the-fact medical records when he redshirted his true frosh season. Not sure, but I don't recall Haku redshirting his true frosh season for medical reasons.

Attritution expected but I just hope it doesn't afrect the Oline & DTs....since returning depth is already thin enough.

  174. Haleakala:

WNy: No, I was looking at going to the game against Cleveland on the 29th. However I can't go now even if tickets were available. Wife and I have tickets to see the play, "Anything Goes". I could have gone to the game and seen the play another night. But its too late now.

  175. Haleakala:

    Wny: Enjoy the game.

  176. al:

    i don't think doe was a redshirt.
haku was injured this past year.

i, too, am not sure about gant or daley. i know the latter really wanted get on the field this past year.

  177. Guy in the office:

Re: 172, 173. Stephen can confirm this, but I think there are numerous errors on the roster as far as classes are concerned. I'm sure Gant, Doe and Daley redshirted, along with Gregory, Amadi and Armstrong (among others) -- who are all listed as sophomores. They'll probably correct those after spring ball.

So, get better first and then they will come.

  182. Keoniana:

Who are these morons spamming this blog..? ? ? get a life!

  183. papajoe2:

181, just a matter of my opinion. I think teams used to want to come to Hawaii until they started losing to the Warriors. Now you hear all kinds of excuses not to come, about the length of travel to and from, missing class time, expensive, etc.. That's why Texas and Michigan State pulled out. They didn't want to come all the way here to have a ligitimate chance of losing.

  184. Ipu Man:

    Papajoe ur right...
    so what's the solution?

  185. kapakahi:

Both Rolo & Mouse mentioned last season at separate Na Koa luncheons that Gant & Doe were being redshirted so that they could better learn the R-n-S offense. Now they've have to learn Norm's offense instead.

Daley redshirted due to foot injury.

  186. Construction software features:

Just out of curiosity, what's your experience in the industry like? I searched around the site and couldn't find a bio or anything. Either way, thanks for the info!

  187. Ralph:

183 the teams didn't want to lose to a team that wasn't highly rated, had we been winning and recognized in the line of Boise State and TCU they would come. They won't lose face and ranking by losing to a good team and one that is ranked.

We would sulk too if UH lost to Lamar and South Alabama next season, it is not a win win situation. JD is lining them up like ducks in a pond expecting a win to boost UH chances of winning 6 or 7 to qualify for the Sheraton Bowl, but if we lose, the stadium will be full of empty seats. With Chow, are chances are very good to succeed. :)

  192. al:

kev-1...the wac would collapse before that happens.

i think the mwc/cusa hybrid will probably offer utah st., san jose st, la tech, and possibly texas st.

  193. al:

...and shaq stokes, the new shaq stokes looked confident, under control, pass first, shoot less in his 21 minutes tonight. hit a couple of three's, dished a few, and played responsible defense tonight.

the best part was his post game interiew. very well spoken gave credit to coach arnold several times as well as acknowledging miah and zane as his mentors.

    nice.

  194. SteveM:

Hey Al, did you notice classmate James sent this to the '67 reunion list (as in the reunion we missed last Saturday :| )... in this case the juke box top 20 of 1967. Click on the songs and it will play.

    http://upchucky.org/JukeCity/1967/OldJukes/player.htm

I think if you substitute a different year for the "1967" it will play songs from 1940-1999.

  195. Guy in the office:

Hey SteveM. Thanks for the link. Got most of those songs in my Itunes library, but Vanilla Fudge? Wow, forgot about that one. I'm in the same class; different school. OK. Back to sports/lurking.

  196. al:

    stevem...ssshhhh. don't advertise our age.
yah, i was just wondering about that reunion the day before the event. oh well, another one missed.

    #198:

was in Fort Walton Beach in July 1979 to attend Air Ground School. nice place!

guys were catching "aku" and dumping them back so I asked for one - they looked at me like I'm crazy as they consider it "rubbish fish". me and this other guy had aku sashimi and fried aku belly and fillet for the next 3 nights.

then as were finishing school, Hurricane Gilbert roared ashore in Louisiana just before we arrived in New Orleans for a 2 day stay before flying home

  217. Buffoman:

Regarding men's volleyball. I think that until there is a "second coming" of an Allen Allen" it is going to be hard to rekindle the excitement.

We had the "Big German" last year and attendance was not there. It'll take a local kid, from a public school (take nothing away from the private schools but they have an ongoing reputation for going away to play), with a big arm, humble local attitude that can help the team to gain chemistry and win to bring fans back.

It will be after that if imports like likable Yuval and others will come and continue to bring wins and excitement that the "Stanley" will rock once again.

Coach Shoji built his teams and the arena in this manner over the years and it seems to work.

I also agree with a blogger that they'll be hard pressed to get 10,000 to a men's soccer game and pay to go.

  218. BigHiloFan2:
