Island fever
By Stephen Tsai
The Linsantity is not unique to the islands. Through the years, there have been frenzies over Hawaii sports stars that have reached fever pitch. Such as:
Jesse Kuhaulua
Star is born: Kuhaulua went to Japan to become Takamiyama, a sumotori whose success helped popularize the centuries-old sport in Hawaii. In 1972, he became the first foreign-born sumotori to win a top-division championship. Interest was so great that delayed telecasts of tournaments aired in Hawaii on the channel that eventually spawned KFVE.
Postscript: Kuhaulua, who still lives in Japan, started a stable that launched the career of Akebono, one of the few foreign-born yokozuna. The downside was Hawaii's success led to tightening of admission rules for foreigners.

The Fabulous Five
Stars are born: For two years, basketball's original Fabulous Five — John Penebacker, Dwight Holiday, Jerome Freeman, Bob Nash and Al Davis — were more popular in Hawaii than the Jackson Five. They played to SRO crowds in the Honolulu International Center (now Blaisdell Arena), and became the first UH team to play in the NCAA Tournament. They also made a fashion statement with their aloha-print uniforms.
Postscript: They still remain popular in Hawaii lore, although the program suffered a few years after they completed their eligibility. Head coach Red Rocha learned he was fired at the team's postseason banquet, and his successor, eventually would be rocked by NCAA violations that placed the program on probation for two years.

Derek Tatsuno
Star is born: The Aiea High graduate was the Valenzuela of his time, a strikeout machine who struck a chord with Hawaii's baseball community. He became the first NCAA pitcher to win 20 games in a season.
Postscript: Fans had hoped he would graduate immediately to the major leagues. He did, only it was to professional baseball in Japan, where he signed a lucrative contract. While UH's baseball stadium is named after head coach Les Murakami, it was Tatsuno's success that is credited with its construction.

Yuval Katz
Star is born: Timing is everything, and the volleyball Warriors benefitted from the opening of the Special Events Arena (now the Stan Sheriff Center) in 2004. Katz was the Justin Timberlake of a pop group that played before enthusiastic crowds. With the Rubberband Man (and sometimes his dance partner Warren), fans soon discovered they could rock and roll without the UH band or cheerleaders. The players were so popular, to all ages, that they often were smuggled out of the arena in laundry bins.
Postscript: After two seasons, Katz left UH to pursue a pro career. The program continued to thrive for several years, culminating in a victory over Pepperdine in the 2002 NCAA championship match. But that victory was vacated two years later when it was ruled that Costas Theocharidis, although not paid, jeopardized his amateur status when he played alongside professionals in a European league before attending UH.

Colt Brennan
Star is born: There was a time when anything Brennan signed became a Christmas stocking stuffer. The mania sparked after he announced he would return to UH for his senior season, and heightened through the unbeaten 2007 regular season, highlighted with his third-place finish in the Heisman Trophy voting. He received a standing ovation when he was announced at his UH graduation. Natural Vibrations played at his graduation party. He even was forgiven for sporting dreadlocks.
Postscript: Injuries have hurt his pursuit of a pro career. He underwent four surgeries for his knees and hips during an 18-month span. In November 2010, he suffered life-threatening injuries during a car crash. Still, he is training for a comeback. Liz Kauai remains his No. 1 fan.

Colt Brennan's NFL career has been an embarrassing flop, but he is signing with a CFL team within the next 2 days so we'll finally see him playing somewhere! Yes, finally!
February 17th, 2012 at 3:59 am
The '73 basketball team also had Artie Wilson and Mel Werts who I think was the best center to play for Hawaii (Werts, Melton (1973, 74, 75, 76)).
February 17th, 2012 at 4:39 am
Alright 13th!
February 17th, 2012 at 4:48 am
Thrilling Aloha Friday!
February 17th, 2012 at 4:53 am
Great topic today! We do need those kind of inspiring local sports heroes in Hawaii again the kind that put fans okoles into seats...
BTW: How can people interested in seeing the Knicks vs Bucks game watch it tonight? I'd like to see this guy Jeremy Lin play!
February 17th, 2012 at 4:57 am

which CFL team and who's the source?
February 17th, 2012 at 5:12 am
I'm going to the game at MSG tonight!
@mo808,
If its not broadcast in Hawaii you can get NBA League Pass. It is actually really good especially if you have an appletv.
February 17th, 2012 at 5:14 am
Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.
One good thing about Spring practice schedule, afternoons at 3:30, means I get to see cuz can catch da late flight home.
February 17th, 2012 at 5:19 am
Great Morning All!
Local Legends. Nice memories.
Looking forward to the next Big Ting! (in Hawaii, aka "Sumboddy")
February 17th, 2012 at 5:23 am

February 17th, 2012 at 5:48 am
Mahalo WarriorNY! Enjoy the game at MSG (no better way to see it)!
February 17th, 2012 at 6:07 am
Thanks for the stroll through "memory lane", ST. I remember all of them. As for Tats, I stopped being a fan of the Padres when they "low-balled" him as their first-round draft choice.
Think they offered him 100K? Played in Japan for around 400K. Ray Kroc could probably have had him for 200K + and Tats could've shown his stuff in the bigs. Oh well...
February 17th, 2012 at 6:23 am
make it a great day everyone.
hi ho hi ho.................
February 17th, 2012 at 6:27 am
You missed the Noga brothers, Blaine Giason(spelling), Rich Miano, just to name a few
UH should do like other schools and put pix and info of the best we had. The stadium should have all the impact football players. The stan sheriff should have bball and vball. The baseball field should have players. Like the saying from above "the house that tats built". Wasnt there another local pitcher on the 80s? Japanese guy wiyh glasses i think. Might look cool to see a wall that has all the greats.
February 17th, 2012 at 6:34 am
Then "protect our house" would mean so much more. Cause now everyone would know every brick laid throughout the years. Every generation would know where we came from. Thats how you build tradition. Right now, the young ones dont even know who in the day laid brick to build this house. This would be great to do, it would bring pride and create an atmosphete of really "Protect this house."
February 17th, 2012 at 6:35 am
You forgot to include a dude named Stephen Tsai. I believe his Tsai-sanity is still on going after several years. So I've heard...
February 17th, 2012 at 6:40 am
Good morning Tsaikos and thanks for the memories. Seems like it was only yesterday, all of those events took place at UH.
February 17th, 2012 at 6:42 am
Good Morning Gangeez!
Nice memories, Mr. Tsai. Thanks.
Here's hoping Colt gets his chance, few have sacrificed for love of UH the way he did. I put his "embarrasing flop" in the NFL on coaches and managers.
Jeremy Lin is a perfect example of the same thing. More than a few coaches had a chance to work with Lin and passed.
Let's not forget that in a head to head challenge, Colt blew up his biggest competitors from college in a nationally televised QB competition. If Colt never gets a chance to be the super star he might have been, it won't be his fault.
February 17th, 2012 at 6:43 am
Hawaiian, #27 -
He even has a movie written about him. Now that's big!
February 17th, 2012 at 6:44 am
LL boys of summer took the Hawaii people on a Magic Carpet ride. Talk about REPRESENT! These kids made us all so proud.
ESPN covered the series (twice!) wall-to-wall, and every set on island was tuned in. Stories about the way the families cooked their local style 'comfort' food was featured during each game.
They even featured a dad who lost his job because he chose to support his son instead of his company. The good news is he was able to get hired soon after because of his choice to share the dream.
Sons of Hawai'i, making sports history one game at a time. Winnahz!
February 17th, 2012 at 6:52 am

Go Warriors!
February 17th, 2012 at 7:01 am

sorry to be off-topic but
Recap of the Warrior Nation group experience at last season’s football road games:
UW game in Seattle last Sept. 10:
We had almost 150 UH fans in our group & our Discount tickets were $42 each (UH ticket office’s price was $75) and we had way better seats in the 45 yard line upper deck (sect. 47) in the shade, with awesome views of Mr. Rainier & Lake Washington. The UH section was in the DIRECT SUN all game; west end zone (sections 4 & 6, 8 & 10) & 40-50 yards from the field.
This gives you a good idea of the both our views in Husky stadium.
http://www.gohuskies.com/recruits/huskystadium.html
San Jose St. game last Oct. 14:
Our group had 50 yard line seats in Section 130; about 20 rows up, behind our Warriors bench, at $25 each--group rate-- we had 200+ Warrior fans sitting in these 20 rows, from row 1 to 21. You can't get any better seats at any other stadium. The UH sections was in the corner end zone (section 134 and 135) and those were $45 each.
If anyone wants to be on our mailing list for this year’s road games, send me an email to: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

#25 Kryon, I believe that Japanese guy was Gerald Ako. He was also one heck of a pitcher, also from Aiea.
Another terrific pitcher who did not play college ball was Sid Fernandez (NY Mets). That guy, when he was a kid in high school playing at Moiliili Field was just beyond the others. What a talent.
We've had some terrific local kids.

I don't think Colt was an embarrassing flop. I think was on an embarrassing flop of an NFL team who had an embarrassing flop of a coach. Making an NFL team is not easy. Take it easy on the kid.
February 17th, 2012 at 8:02 am
It's not a frenzy until the people that started the frenzy are soon taken advantage of and exploited.

GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
@37 I agree with you but ...
Colt is a credit to himself, his family and to the University of Hawaii. He sacrificed big $$$ to stay in Hawaii for his senior year. He has succeeded in being a model individual, a player that will always be remembered as one of the best in UH history.
A flop? NEVER!
February 17th, 2012 at 8:15 am
#35 tom-warriornation:
Mahalo again for organizing the awesome seats at Husky Stadium. I was part of your troop up in the balcony and I agree we got a great deal! Good view, good shade, and good company! Too bad for the not so good ending but you really made our day!
February 17th, 2012 at 8:22 am
It should be no surprise to the amount of anti-Colt Brennan sentiment that is in Hawaii.
Hawaii is full of gamblers.
People lost a lot of money on the Sugar Bowl.
The rest is history.

ditto that!!!
February 17th, 2012 at 8:30 am
I used to go to the baseball games at the old UH baseball field. We could stand behind home plate and watch Tatsuno pitch. His fastball had so much movement it was unreal. Coach Murakami's strategy was to pitch Gerald Ako in the first game and come back with Tatsuno in the next game. Two completely different pitchers because Ako was a junk ball pitcher. I also recall that Tatsuno had a nice pick off move to first base. He caught the runner at first in the ninth inning with two outs and the score Hawaii 8 and USC 7 to end the game.
February 17th, 2012 at 8:35 am
Hey my uncle, Joel Lono played baseball during the 80's I think? My mom said he was pretty good. Anybody remember or know of him or how he did at UH?
February 17th, 2012 at 8:37 am
Before the House that Tats Built, rainy day games were very "fan interactive"
Hoping the Manoa Mist allows for a nice opening night for the BaseBows tonight.
February 17th, 2012 at 8:41 am
was coach gib joking around when he talked about the recruitment of fotu yesterday? if the story is true, that's awesome!
with fotu having a background in rugby, me thinks he'd make one hell of a TE prospect for chow. since gib has been borrowing miah (and possibly ursua) he should repay the favor and let fotu play football if he's interested.
February 17th, 2012 at 8:50 am
Don't forget CHOW-Mania!!!!
February 17th, 2012 at 8:56 am
no forget the boxers Ganigan, Salud, and Viloria. and the mma guy, Penn.
February 17th, 2012 at 8:57 am
Joel Lono was pretty good. I had to fill in on baseball, and he won that game. Lefty with good control.
February 17th, 2012 at 8:58 am
Does anyone see a benefit for the MWC/C-USA merge?
I don't get it. In theory, the viewership is going to be better but I don't see how that will boost the bottom line enough to make it worth anything. The overall "Super conf" members are not too impressive.
February 17th, 2012 at 8:58 am
Ganigan had some great fights.
February 17th, 2012 at 8:59 am
Yes I am...
GO COLT!!!!
Looking forward to another Tsai-ko visit this weekend... had fun with A-Sports this week!
February 17th, 2012 at 9:01 am

GO WARRIORS!
GO *.BOWS!!!!

So much greats that we dont know cause not displayed. And we only talking about the local ones
We got colin scott, jeff snyder, gary allen, kurt and kent k. And family, and in the other psoplorts. See if we had these guys story and pix around their respectrd fields, everyone would know. And the house would keep getting built. Great recruiting too
l also. Imagine going down ias a legend.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:11 am
gambling is a sin? better tell my family and friends no go vegas and gamble anymore. or they can say 3 hail mary's and take a mulligan.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:12 am

Plus every generation would know how and when the bricks were laid in the house we call "HAWAII."

Going Tell Ma....
February 17th, 2012 at 9:18 am
Getting ugly again for an otherwise nice day in Vegas.
53 degrees, sunny, wind at 10mph coming from the North.
Portland live stats slow as hell.
Someone on an audio broadcast said the announcer "pre-apoligized" for getting Hawaii names wrong, but called the softball team "WARRIORS"... jesus...
READ THE MEDIA GUIDE AND GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT!!! "RAINBOW WAHINE"!!!!! (if there is a media guide)
February 17th, 2012 at 9:21 am
BTW.
NO live stats or anything for the next game vs UC Riverside and for BOTH of tomorrow's games vs CS Northridge and Idaho State.
UH SID still away with Rainbow Wahine basketball and those other schools won't have SIDs present.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:21 am
ST,
Nice! That's cool to know!
February 17th, 2012 at 9:23 am
I have a feeling some of the comments here are missing the point a little bit. This blog was not necessarily about great local athletes but that one level higher, the ones that specifically created a frenzied mania where they were the talk of the talk and created a fever pitch all by themselves.
Using that criteria, ST did a pretty good job capturing the best of the best. Yes there have been a lot of great athletes, but few that would stop work in offices around Hawaii just to listen to a press conference of them staying for their senior year (or in my case, taking off from work just to be there in person at the Stan Sheriff Center.)
February 17th, 2012 at 9:25 am
"talk of the town"
February 17th, 2012 at 9:27 am
Gambling is not a sin.
People gamble that is their choice to do so, but in doing so, some people shouldn't be so STUPID when they lose.
Hey, no one put a gun to your head to throw money down on others, essentially leaving the fate of YOUR money in the hands of strangers.
That is what gambling in sports is. Throwing money down and leaving your wallet in the hands of people that don't even know you.
That's why it's called gambling.
And yes people that get all pissy about losing money on UH sports and start slamming the student-athletes are STUPID.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:28 am
...and who can forget "Bubbles"...
February 17th, 2012 at 9:29 am
Likewise, I know people that gamble, lose and then move on accepting the fact that they... um GAMBLED with their money.
Gambling wouldn't be so much of a problem if more people were mature about it.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:30 am
Gamblng is like drinking. Some people can handle it some people cant. Some people know when they've had just enough, some get broke or end up in the drunk tank at 5-O.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:31 am
#64 tom-wn:
Haha, I shook your hand and thanked you in person at Seattle and we are friends on facebook. I'll message you later.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:33 am
truegreen, plenty comments from all the blogs misses the point sukoshi. makes for plenty post counts and views.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:34 am
ST:
You and Cindy Luis did great write ups on Al Scates.
I have always admired his stategy and tactican skills. This was very evident at Pauly Pavillion the night Mike Wilton got out-coached by Scates for the national championshi in 1996. With UCLA up 2-1 and losing game 4 early, Scates pulled Niihapali who sat most of the 4th game. Wilton kept Katz in. In game 5, Katz was so tired he became a non-factor while Niipali controlled game 5.
Beyond that, "SIT DOWN AL"!!!
February 17th, 2012 at 9:39 am
"Jessica Eye Water" - Jessica Iwata.
God these announcers on audio are HORRIBLE.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:44 am
Thanks for the Hawaii Stars and memories.
Guessing only Jesse didn't attend UH or did he? Because Jesse endured a lot of hardship training as a first foreiner to enter into an old federal era national sport in Japan, many others were able to follow and train with Jesse to greatness.
We also can't forget Carter who's guarding Lin in NBA today.
I'm sure there will be many others to come with Chow's Era Now.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:45 am
We all gamble each day just getting out of bed and living life.
Get in the car and do the hwy the odds on the side of risks.
You dont support gambling, but your a fan of football. These athletes gamble with their lives just getting on the field and playing smash mouth.
This gambling issue in the islands will not change. We all know who is behind the anti-revenue circus.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:49 am
Before Ganigan there was Carl Bobo Olsen.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:53 am
You have to include Shane Victorino. World Champion, multiple gold glove winner, 2 time All Star,
Charity work, has his "VIC" pack at Zippy's and he's not finished. He's probably the richest Hawaii athlete for playing sports.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:04 am
Kelly Majam solo homer. 7-0 Rainbow Wahine up bottom 4th.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:06 am
My earliest memory of the old UH baseball stadium as a kid was that there was apparently only one bathroom that the players and fans shared. I was at the trough urinal and Howard Dashefsky came up and peed right next to me...
February 17th, 2012 at 10:07 am
Good morning everyone!
February 17th, 2012 at 10:08 am
GO WAHINE!
February 17th, 2012 at 10:09 am
Kaia Parnaby puts Portland State in their place with another K with bases loaded and 2 outs!
AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!!! OY! OY! OY!
Just like Australian Air, she stranded a lot of people.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:12 am
truegreen -- my earliest memories of the old UH baseball stadium was sitting on aluminum bleachers and not having to go to the restroom the entire game...
jm2375 and Kevin -- thanks for the softball updates. Keep 'em coming!
February 17th, 2012 at 10:13 am
How UH fans trash Colt Brennan to me is mind blowing. If he were to leave after Jr. year he would have likely been a first round pick. But he came back knowing there was a chance of a perfect season. In the Georgia game he had no chance with the pressure he was getting. If people are mad about losing money in that game blame the O-line and defense for making knowshon Moreno a first round pick.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:16 am
Anyone going to the Willows today to see Coach Skippa Diaz birthday bash. 10:00 to 2:00. I wish I could go to hear all the football stories.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:25 am
AGAIN, Kaia Parnaby pitches us out of a jam with bases loaded and two outs as a result of fielding errors.
Aiyah!
Top of the 6th now, UH up 7-0.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:26 am
We got two errors to Portland State's solo error. Hits are 5 a piece.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:29 am
Man I wish I could hear the announcer SWEATING out "Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu" every time she comes to bat.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:32 am
wasn't knowshown moreno only a rs freshman when he played against the Warrirors? i don't think it was the Warriors that made him a 1st round pick.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:35 am
SteveM: your detective skills are impressive. you know what I mean. how'd you do that? you 're gonna have to share your secrets with me, lol
February 17th, 2012 at 10:35 am
Nah. Moreno was an upperclassman right?
February 17th, 2012 at 10:38 am
i think couch potato is right
February 17th, 2012 at 10:39 am
yeah, he was an upperclassman when he got drafted.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:40 am
how is kaia parnaby's kid sister doing?
February 17th, 2012 at 10:40 am
Top of 7th. UH 7-0 still yet.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:41 am
001
February 17th, 2012 at 10:42 am
so how many of the softball boosters made the trip to las vegas?
February 17th, 2012 at 10:43 am
Al,
She's on the road trip with them. Based on fall and spring practices ooks like Coolen is prepping her for the outfield more so than catching.
I wouldn't "hold my breath" this season for a Parnaby/Parnaby pitching and catching duo. Sharla and Kayla are too ahead of the game right now behind the plate.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:45 am
Colt Brennan throwing 3 ints and having 2 fumbles in the Sugar Bowl and crying on the sidelines led to his stock drop. It's not a shame to fail miserably in the NFL as it's the top of the food chain! According to Manoaunderground interview, he said he'll be signed to a CFL team soon. Hopefully he doesn't washout of there too! Go Colt! Mahalo.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:46 am
Parents and family are the ORIGINAL boosters. So I'd say a good amount are in Vegas right now.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:50 am
10-0 UH, top of 7th, 1 out.
Damn.. should have made pledges for RBIs too.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:52 am
Ok 11-0 UH.
S***, PSU must owe them money or something.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:54 am
truegreen:
You are correct that the list was about those that created the frenzy, not just about good players. There have been a lot of great athletes.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:56 am
UH wins 11-0 with 4 runs in the top of the 7th.
Add 2 HRs and 6 Ks to the total.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:57 am
what? no bottom of the 7th?
February 17th, 2012 at 10:58 am
February 17th, 2012 at 11:05 am
Yikes, Kaia have some problems. She's given up an HR, triple and double in the 7th with no Ks. UH 11-3, 2 outs
February 17th, 2012 at 11:07 am
phew. Game pau. UH 11-3.
Congrats Wahine.
February 17th, 2012 at 11:16 am

#51, Will-I-Am, the basic benefits of the MWC/CUSA merger are:
1. Security in numbers (the merged conference may still be cherry-picked by the Big East or other conferences, but will be too large to be endangered by losing members)
2. Competitive strength (the merged conference will be higher rated in football and basketball than either the MWC or CUSA would have been if they had expanded separately by adding WAC and Sun Belt schools)
3. TV appeal (although the merged conference will have few big-name schools or large markets, it will cover five time zones and offer lots of inventory, making it a good "one-stop shopping" solution for Fox Sports Network or CBS Sports Network or NBC Sports Network who are grappling with ESPN's near-monopoly on college football cable broadcasting rights)
4. Freedom from the MWC TV contract (the merged conference will not be subject to the awful deal signed by the MWC in 2006, which gives CBS total control over MWC broadcasting rights through 2020 for only $12 million per year, far below the current market rate for Divison 1 college sports content)

not anything to do with sports but do you remember the jasmine trias fenzy? that fizzled.
February 17th, 2012 at 11:40 am
The Colt Brennan story is completely dead outside of Hawaii.
He's basically a forgotten man after the Sugar Bowl beatdown and his subsequent NFL fiasco. Nobody knows about him or cares about him, it's really sad! At least we can propel his legacy! UH will never forget his sacrafice.

Tommui no audio, video or game stats for Na Wahine game with UC Riverside this afternoon. Softball is not on UHAD priority list, the media person is with the Na Wahine WBB in Ruston. UCR doesn't have any SID or media person with them either. The Portland State SID mentioned that he will be scoring several games today because other teams did not bring their SID to the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.
February 17th, 2012 at 12:31 pm
thanks kazz....looks we are fortunate to have two good catchers who can hit as well. aren't they both lefthanded?

Tatsuno is on the college all time all-star team and is in the college baseball hof.
and those inanimate frenzies, beanie babies and pogs.

Interesting how certain individuals on this blog are "trashing" or seem to be trasing Colt B. in the Sugar Bowl.
Let's not forget that word was leaked in the locker room, just before the game, that June Jones was leaving for SMU. It was really sad to see how the Warriors entered the Super Dome that day - total lack luster!!! We may been 7 rows from the ceiling, but it was plain as day that something was wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, don't forget that the refs allowed the Georgia DEs, no off-side penalties, to break way before the ball and smash Colt. This entire officiating team was later penalized for their actions by the NCAA and not allowed to offciate any more bowl games in 2008.
Except for the game, NOLA was exciting and fun. Plan to return someday with or without UH in the Sugar Bowl.
February 17th, 2012 at 12:36 pm
Al,
Yeah. Wartner and Kliebenstein are lefties. Only difference is Sharla catches left but hits right. Kayla is a "true" lefty both ways.
Coolen said several times he plans to "platoon" them when the WAC starts. Supposedly Wartner has a good pitch calling "sequence" with Ricketts and Kliebenstein calls real well with K. Parnaby.
Should this happen, Kayla will move to 1st when Sharla is called in to start as a catcher. There would be several infield options for Coolen depending on who they are playing against. He says if he needs more speed at the corners, Pagaduan will move to 3rd likely inserting Zamora at 2nd.
We'll see, but for now the current batting order is working.
February 17th, 2012 at 12:37 pm
i wish that the writer the player bio's, is that you derek, would include more stats, records, etc.
that are at the top of the player's bio page.
for example for football: 40 time, vj, shuttle, bench reps, squat, catches/yards, yac, rush carries/yards/ave.
baseball/softball: bats: r or l, throws: r or l, ba, rbis, runs, steals, 2b, 3b, hr.
basketall; pts/ave, reb/ave, asst/ave, blks/ave
anyway you get the picture. it could also be a great recruiting tool.

Kikaida Frenzy…
Why do people keep shoving this thing down our throats. Talk about IRRELEVANT!!!
I swear they had a Kikaida theme at halftime a few seasons ago at UH football and had one of the guys as a "guest" conductor with the UH marching band as well.
Whoever is booking these guys for "TODAY" should take into account that when you book a guest "something" they need to be relevant to TODAY.

Al,
When Leisha got her first NCAA homer during that one game vs UMKC when we were down by one run in the 6th, Coolen couldn't hide his smile.
Usually he has no facial expression after homers and just hi-5's the round trippers on the way to home. But he had a HUGE grin from ear to ear and kept on smiling even until the next at bat.
You could tell how he envision's Liilii's contributions to the program over the next few years.

jusmy2cents,again...regarding colt brennan...i asked this question before on this blog, does anyone here also think that he was released by Shanahan when he took over the redskins because of the sour experience he had with ashley lelie back in denver? being both these guys were JJ's boys and shanahan was really p'd off with the way lelei handled his whole contract situation, holdout while with denver and he(shanahan) felt like he did JJ a favor by drafting lelei(JJ's Boy) early in the draft only to be #$@%* by lelei by the way he handled his contract situation...iv'e seen people post here saying it was jim zorn who had it in for CB, but i think it was really shanahan's doing.i felt CB was in the perfect situation with the redskins, he was was in position to battle for the back up qb spot and also was a fan favorite in washington. if he wasn't released he would have had an opportunity to play because the starter, campbell got hurt early on and CB would have had his shot to show what he could do and i really feel that he would have solidified his spot with his play...
i'm not bashing on lelei also,he is one of my favorites and wished that he did more with his nfl career but i do question a bit on how he handled his whole contract situation while with denver...not trying to TROLL, jusmy2cents

Tom Mui,
Nothing new other than that one year, despite how many winning seasons over the last 20...
But it's ok. Just a women's non-revenue sport so who really gives a crap right? All they do is suck money away from football and men's basketball the real sports that people should only care about.
Who cares if they can have winning seasons with so little. Who cares if they serve as role models for the younger girls looking to get an education while playing something they like right?

@117 I was just in Vegas and talking to a cabbie from NY. We talked about how he loved that UH team cuz of all the money he made from them covering all year. He also thought Colt got a raw deal from coach Zorn. Zorn was so concerned about his mechanics, he couldn't see the results on the field when he did get a chance to play. A lot of my Raider fan friends are still up set he didn't get a real chance to beat out Kyle Boller.

#141, I saw a newsclip of Leisha LiiLii at the State softball tournament last year hitting a line drive homerun in Wahine stadium. The ball was a rocket, only about 10-12 feet above the ground all the way over the fence. I said to myself, "WOW", Next Wahine superstar. She hits the ball harder than the men.

Give Colt some love, all you bashers. How soon we forget. He sacrificed millions to come back for his senior year resulting in the greatest season and publicity for Hawaii sports in history. 3rd in Heisman, undefeated; Sugar Bowl. Miraculous!.
He needs the right opportunity, the right system, with the right coach and the right timing. Rather than bashing him, Pray that Akua blesses him. Linsanity is a prime example of what happens when all that falls into place.
February 17th, 2012 at 3:49 pm
So, Papajoe, did you get stamps when you made the purchase? Did Foodland have stamps or was it only Times?
Did you ever go get a bottle of coke (10 cents) and buy a bag of planters peanuts (5 cents) and pour the peanuts into the bottle of coke?
My cousins and his friends who were older used to do that. They'd have a comic book rolled up and tucked under their arm, hair full of seventeen and the cosmetic stick to slick the hair back and a duck tail. The comb was one of those long skinny ones that used to get all white from the residual cosmetic stick when they combed their hair,
Damn I'm old!

While on a cruise stop in Sequenay, Canada in 2008, I was asked by a bus driver if I was from Hawaii because I was wearing a UH football t-shirt. He said he coaches a high school team there and just goes nuts over Colt Brennan and Timmy Chang. He said that he really loved the passing game that UH had and couldn't beleive the numbers the CB and TC put up. He wanted to talk more about UH football but had to leave with the bus.

Wahine softball news. HENDERSON, Nev. – Sharla Kliebenstein hit a grand slam to fuel a six-run first inning for Hawai`i as the Rainbow Wahine took down Portland State, 11-3, on Friday at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.
February 17th, 2012 at 8:46 pm
@253. Me, no way! Born, bred to live and die in the 808.
Grew up in Palolo Valley in the sixties.. Attended private schools (Parents sacraficed for three kids) now reside in 96734 (22 years) coming up with a BD in May (56 years. Amazing!) and my nickname really is Moe (yup, three stooges) 1974 grad Sacred Hearts.
So, listening to all the guys reminisce jn the previous posts makes me nostalgic for the good ole days

Too old for DPK......BTW, DPK, son #1's wife just gave birth to another son, + Puni folks had twins last year. There goes the inter island budget, hope HA has more 'Aloha' for neighbor islanders to visit 'ohana........and for us to see the UH Warriors in action this year!

In my ironworker days, used to go for a few w/ friends after work to Yoko's in Kapahulu, just to hear Leinaala Haili sing...........'Ua noho wau a kupa i ko alo...'. Good fun days, now getting older & more nostalgic. Oh well, also remember the days when UH played Willamete, too, & the old stadium was almost full!
February 17th, 2012 at 9:38 pm
Okay you old futs (myself included), remember when Lippy Espinda used to have his used car commercials? I think he was the originator of the phrase and shaka sign. Forbidden City was right next to his lot.
I always thought that the Biltmore Hotel had the classiest staircase to the lobby right off Kalakaua.
I am so old that I remember getting milk in bottles at school. That's how we got our milk caps (pogs). And we used to lick the cream off the bottom of the caps (before homogenization). After lunch we'd go to a long through where there was a long pipe running down the middle with holes. The monitor would turn on the water and we'd take our tin's of tooth powder out sprinkle a little on the toothbrushes and brush teeth before we could go play at recess.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:39 pm
9-0.... awesome start for the Wahine SB team... seems like they are hitting the homers with greater frequency ... I guess the bats are seasoned, now.

I knew someone would know that song hahaha...good job Al
February 17th, 2012 at 9:50 pm
@258 Myrah English...her music was often played by my parents along with Kalimas and others at our home in Palolo Valley. Dad was HPD officer from fifties through seventies, moonlighting as a musician/comedian entertainer; self taught musically, he played with Kalima Brothers and the Seaside Boys, and as piano bar soloist as well. Kui Lee was my favorite local musician before his passing.
February 17th, 2012 at 9:51 pm
Lippy Espinda Mr pidgeon English....been to Forbidden City and yeah we used get home delivery of bottle milk and I saved my milk caps to paste on the poster to go see Roy Rogers at the Termite Palace
February 17th, 2012 at 9:53 pm
laughing kahunas...wow
February 17th, 2012 at 9:53 pm
I remember Kui Lee at The Shell during his final days from his throat cancer trying to perform his farewell
February 17th, 2012 at 9:56 pm
@272 I didn't appreciate Palolo until I left in 1974. Kinda small world to learn from this blog that Norm Chow's Ohana was residing at the mouth of the Valley. Okay, now I guess I feel like get some class to us Palololians (is that a word)?
February 17th, 2012 at 9:59 pm
fehoko fanaika will take his last trip to LSU.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:00 pm
Old timer, you remember when the symphony used to have concerts and we would all go on excursions. We had to learn a song because at some point in the performance we would all sing that song. I think the conductor's name was Mr. Barrati(sp?).
The one song I remember had something to do with "my knapsack on my back..."
February 17th, 2012 at 10:01 pm
Yeah--Lippy's used car lot and Forbidden City. Would you buy a used car from Lippy? My friends took me to Forbidden City on my 21st birthday.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:02 pm

February 17th, 2012 at 10:07 pm
Yoko's was the name of the owner's wife.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:10 pm
When I think of Lippy today, my recollection of him was looking like a local guy with a cross of Fred Sanford and Ray Charles. His pigeon was classic stuff, and it was all viewed in black and white.
Big excursion was going to Kress Store downtown in the morning, going downstairs to the counter and having a waffle before going to the toy department while my mom shopped.
#280 Al, wouldn't it just blow everyone away if that young man said no to the SEC schools and enrolled at UH? I guess the only thing that would happen is that his star rating would go down a couple of point.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:10 pm
I not sure, but was Perry Boys at the Reef one of the first buffet places????
February 17th, 2012 at 10:10 pm
I don't recall going to the symphony when I was young of course that was in the fifties when Carl Bobo Olson was still boxing and his old gym in Kalihi was torn down that was next to the Kalihi Union Church in the back near Richards Lane
February 17th, 2012 at 10:11 pm
Mililani has to mark Klink wherever he goes..Klink scored 24 goals during the regular season.

whitey....too funny. arirang started off as a legit korean food restaurant. was one of the few korean restaurants back in the day.
no sooner, they stayed open late and became a rest/k bar. then, a stage was placed in the room where the famous disappearing egg trick became legend of our time. oh and later the quarters....likey changey?
okay enuff of this, this is a family blog.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:34 pm

February 17th, 2012 at 10:47 pm
Okay, the conversation went south with the cigar smoke...
February 17th, 2012 at 10:55 pm
fanaika is a longshot.
but, at least we were able to come up to bat.
the ball hasn't landed yet and until it does we still got a shot.
this guy has nfl qualities written all over his resume'.
will it matter where he plays?
it will boil down to how he plays.
it will boil down what kind of coaching he'll get. (very promising situation here with wiesehan and uperesa. oh, and chow.)
add to that, hawaii has sent its share nfl lineman and chow has a great track record with developing and recommending his players to the nfl.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:57 pm
if your dream was to play in the nfl wouldn't you want to play with a coach with that kind of resume?
chow will certainly prepare our team's players just for that with the proper discipline, training regime, academic necessities, techniques, and the like.
February 17th, 2012 at 11:07 pm
I heard of those places oldtimer808 hung out back in the day, he must have the glades and prince Hanalei on his old time favorites list.
February 18th, 2012 at 12:09 am
@ #327 oldtimer808 Hotel on the corner of King & Dillingham was the Komatsuya Hotel operated by the Sato family. Nakamura Hotel was on King between Piikoi and Pensacola. The building is still their.

4 years next month is how long Jim Donovan has been UHAD. a month earlier da fumbler was let go because of (choke reasons, mainly 3 months earlier JJ left UH). we were left in a quandary.
I'd say Mr. Donovan has done a good job righting the ship. not only he tries hard, but he's given all da coaches chance fo shine, and if no shine, den he takes action.
I say good job JD. Hope your parents are comfortable and giving you more good memories.
February 18th, 2012 at 2:57 am
Coach Chow,
UH Coaches,
just in case you neva know about Hilo side football players
February 18th, 2012 at 3:08 am
reading the above, I notice:
Bruce Kekuewa is a pipeline for football recruits out of Hilo. he got credibility and a track record. Kekuewa's son got a schollie from Western Ariz. and was this year's JC All America first team (Center) son and now got a schollie from Bowling Green.
I think Coach Chow and company should take note of brudda Kekuewa. more chance for bonding and credibility because we are of the same ...culture.
plus, we get one pipeline, HiloBilly, fo introduce.
February 18th, 2012 at 3:29 am
this is one reason why Bruce Kekuewa get credibility, his son Kelii.
There you go Coaches. we know you guys just started, kinda late for this year, and you've already started evaluating all the talent available for the next years. you are doing just great! hoping the home town news will help da Warriors!!!!
Go Warriors!! we got great players on da outer islands, even those that no make the Honolulu Star Advertiser front sports page. Paleka-Kennedy is an example. His fadda Kennedy is huge huge huge huge. big and huge. da boy going grow samoa so da jeans no fit.
February 18th, 2012 at 3:34 am
Really enjoyed the Island Fever article. Get out the Fab Five, Green Machine and Hawaiian Punch t-shirts! There are so many athletes that did sizzle and with the news delays back then this was the news! Thanks for the memories! Do include more articles like this -- really entertaining and gets us thinking about the special achievements of Hawaii athletes that did generate Island fever! Thanks!

Good morning Tsaikos...
Last year's MWC schedule came out on March 3rd. Hope that's the case again this year.
Need to start planning road trips.
February 18th, 2012 at 6:49 am
Wow! Bringing back the memories of old downtown near Aala Park.
Kobayashi Hotel was on Beretania Street....mauka of Aala Park. Forgot the name of the original bar downstairs....but later became Kurobara when they moved over from nearby Hawaii Hochi. Kobayashi Travel Service, Ltd. indeed still in business....located on King Street mauka across McKinley HS on 2nd Floor....same building as Kim Chee III Restaurant.
Nakamura Hotel moved and still in business too on mauka side of King Street....between Pensacola & Piikoi.
February 18th, 2012 at 6:55 am
While nice to still have Natsunoha Tea House in Alewa Heights, too bad still no more Kanraku Tea House...between Dillingham and King.
February 18th, 2012 at 7:03 am
The original Nakamura Hotel was also on Beretania next door to Kobayashi Hotel....on Diamond Head side....then next Yamashiro Hotel too...before the Nuuanu Stream.
Kobayashi Hotel was on mauka & Diamond Head corner of Beretania & Aala.
February 18th, 2012 at 7:11 am
It's actually a great and useful piece of information. I am happy that you just shared this helpful information with us. Please keep us informed like this. Thank you for sharing.
February 18th, 2012 at 7:17 am
Still remember watching old samurai movies at Toyo Theater....and eating saimin at the counter restaurant in small building in front.
...and watching obake movies at Kokusai Theater....before it became Empress Theater....and now a church.
February 18th, 2012 at 7:25 am
Still remember the 60's and early 70's when the sumotori....including grand champions like Taiho & Kashiwado....used to stay over at Kobayashi Hotel....since the back building had a big Japanese style ofuro to accommodate the big boys.
Also alot of foreign boxers used to stay over at Kobayashi Hotel....courtesy of sad Sam Ichinose....and do their road work by running around Aala Park.
February 18th, 2012 at 7:32 am
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
@324 Some people on the blog like to blow smoke in our (collective) face.
February 18th, 2012 at 7:45 am
@281 Buffoman
The Happy Wanderer
I love to go a-wandering,
Along the mountain track,
And as I go, I love to sing,
My knapsack on my back.
Chorus:
Val-deri,Val-dera,
Val-deri,
Val-dera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha
Val-deri,Val-dera.
My knapsack on my back.
It was George Barati - and the Honolulu Symphony was stationed over at the McKinley HS auditorium. His predecessor was Fritz Hart.
I recall Kress had the greatest ice cream sandwiches - they would put those crispy waffles on the ice cream squares.
And don't forget McInerny, Andrade, Wichman etc.
February 18th, 2012 at 7:46 am
speaking of "old" places:
1957 on a stop over because Hurricane hit Kauai, we were treated to the a place called "Sands" in Waikiki - $1.50 all you can eat buffet
on our first date with Mrs A-House, after a banquet, went to Club Habahaba and watched the famous Jade East
February 18th, 2012 at 7:48 am
After Bobo Olsen.....and before Ganigan....lets' not forget World Champion Ben Villaflor....now State Senate Sergeant-at-Arms.
February 18th, 2012 at 7:49 am
Ben KO'd Kuniaki Shibata.....who was staying at Kobayashi Hotel.
February 18th, 2012 at 7:55 am
kapakahi, and before Olsen and Ganigan, there was Dado Marino and Flash Elorde. I think both were world champs
February 18th, 2012 at 7:56 am
Good morning Tsaikos and like the rest, just waiting to hear more good news.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:00 am
Pagoda Hotel became an island favorite of mine because of convience and located in the fun district.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:04 am
Lord, I agree with BHF2 in #221. Please bless our Coltster and all of the other guys who have played for UH, giving their all, whether in games or on the practice field. Amene.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:06 am
Good morning, gang!
The UNLV softball field is a nice facilty, but gets really cold when the sun goes down in the desert. Good luck to NA WAHINE today. Lanakila!
February 18th, 2012 at 8:08 am
There was no Pagoda Hotel before the 70's. That's the demand that was filled by Kobayashi, Komatsuya, Nakamura & Yamashiro hotels downtown for those that arrived by boat at nearby Honolulu Harbor....as well as for neighbor island visitors.
Still remember Liz Damon's Orient Express performing at Pagoda's Club C'est Si Bon back in the 70's. How many of you can remember their hit song "1900 Yesterday"?
February 18th, 2012 at 8:08 am
@374. Empress Theater. We'd see all the Shaolin Masters Kung Fu movies there.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:12 am
Liberty Theater (across Nuuanu Ave. from New Kokusai) was more interesting for Shaw Brothers flicks.
You could try out the "Rat" techniques during the movie!
February 18th, 2012 at 8:13 am
@386. Yeah, I remember that song...haven't that one in a longggg time.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:13 am
Liz' sister was onstage with her. Who can recall her name?
February 18th, 2012 at 8:14 am
Good Morning Gangeez!
Beeg Heelo,
Bruce Kekuewa is a terrific guy and is married to a pretty awesome lady too. Its no wonder they make awesome babies.
Hilo Billy -
Thanks for the great news about the awesome babies your family is popping out these days. I'd love to see my man Puni as well as the rest. Will make it a point to see you folks next time we're in Hilo. You and mama must be proud of your mo'opuna.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:15 am
Thanks whitey. I was trying to think of the boxer around the Emile Griffith era with the fancy name. It was Flash Elorde. Now that I think about it, I really don't know if it was during that era.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:15 am
388. The Shaw Brothers flicks, yup I remember those.

Edda Damon. What do I win?
February 18th, 2012 at 8:18 am
Several hours after the Knicks' Lin-spired winning streak was snapped by the New Orleans Hornets, ESPN ran the headline "Chink In The Armor" to accompany the game story on mobile devices.
ESPN is STUPID!!!!!!
February 18th, 2012 at 8:19 am
More recently nostalgia. Remember when Mac D had a value meal that was a dollar? Now its over $4 minimum.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:19 am
Liz and Orient Express performed for us at a special school assembly up on the hill once. Pretty cool huh?
February 18th, 2012 at 8:20 am
Remember those great Shaw Brothers movies starring Alexander Fu Sheng....until his tragic death.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:21 am
Sydette Sakauye was Liz's other back up singer.

Where can I get a Big mac value meal for $4?!
February 18th, 2012 at 8:22 am
Pagoda when Zulu was there. We ordered fancy booze drinks and the waitress said it was OK. We were underaged. Also my first bar when they passed the 18 year old law legalizing drinking was Arirang. First time I felt breast implants there. Bwahahaha.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:24 am
#402 you gotta go Guatamala.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:27 am
DPK,
You sure wasn't Odda Damon?
February 18th, 2012 at 8:28 am
DPK, I going on a cruise in May, stopping in Guatamala. You like I bring you back Big Mac $4 Value Meal?
February 18th, 2012 at 8:29 am
I remember renting room at the Pagodas in 1969.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:36 am
Gotta love them hairdos from the 70's!
At least you knew if the hair was their own....before they invented extensions.

Shoots den!

Anyway, back to BaseBows.
Very good win also in terms of marketing. Good performances to build on in front of a SRO crowd.
If he keeps it up Sisto should help attendance especially with all the Thursday night series openers this year.
Ventimilia looks to be an exciting addition on the basepaths.
The "yutes" seemed primed to becoming fans of Frosh Kaeo Aleviado.
Hopefully, this team can keep building on last night's win.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:40 am
kapakahi...wow! i thought you were a young-in. was that you who took my tomo- ame candy at the toyo theater on the night that the "chuushingura" classic was playing?
i recall that saimin too.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:44 am
@398. Alexander Fu Sheng was the draw for us; he passed too soon
February 18th, 2012 at 8:46 am
and if you like see liz damon, go to fremont hotel where she is a hostess and runs the afternoon contest at the blazing 7 machines.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:48 am
the best reason for staying at the hotels in that area, no need drive, can stagger home.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:49 am
plus get plenty policemen in that area and get plenty off duty ones sharing stories.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:50 am
@400. Mahalo d1shima!
February 18th, 2012 at 8:51 am
DPK, I going give 'um the $4 Big Mac Value Meal to my friend Lolo Joe. He said he know how to smuggle um in. He said he going hide 'um in his suitcase so no stink up day room.
February 18th, 2012 at 8:52 am
