Going for the goal

May 11th, 2012
By

During exit interviews, each player was asked to submit a list of long- and short-term goals.

Nearly everyone listed winning the MWC title as a top goal.

"I like that," head coach Norm Chow said. "We have unselfish players."

Tavita Woodard, who was at tight end for 10 of the 15 spring practices, has been told he will compete at defensive end in training camp. Chow said Woodard did well at tight end but he will have a bigger impact as a hybrid defender because of his size, quickness and agility.

Justin Alo, who was held out of contact drills the second half of spring training because of a fractured hand, was told he will remain at quarterback. Alo has the skills and athleticism to compete at several positions.

Chow finished the exit interviews yesterday. The players are on their own until Aug. 1, when they report to training camp, although they are permitted to use the UH facilities and participate in conditioning drills conducted by strength coordinator Tommy Heffernan.

Former UH linebacker Aaron Brown is still representing the 50th state.

He has No. 50.

  10. al:

    stink bomb?

  11. Ipu Man:

The comical "Stink Bomb" is about a lab technician, Nobuo Tanaka, battling the flu. He mistakes some experimental pills for cold pills and swallows them. The pills are part of a biological weapon program, reacting to the flu shot already in his body. Tanaka soon develops a deadly body odor and becomes a walking weapon of mass destruction.

    So sad yet humorous...

  12. Shoko:

Okay, the Warriors are on their own till Aug 1st. Behave boys! No off-the-field shanigans, m'kay? ;)

  13. Shoko:

I thought so too Mr. Tsai!

  28. Stephen Tsai:

I'm thankful to Brown. I texted him last night for a photo. He delivered.

  29. Stephen Tsai:

I do not know if Maar has decommited. In men's volleyball, letters of intent aren't important because nobody gets a full ride.
UH had three recruits visit recently. We'll see how that goes. But if they're walkons there won't be any word until they gain admission into school.

  30. SAWARRIOR:

    5-0 POWER!

  31. Stephen Tsai:

Jeff Hall has been on the road recruiting/scouting. Charlie texted yesterday he just returned to town after being "off the grid" recently.

  32. bleedgreen:

if so, that is where we must travel to find players. what ever happened to that puerto rico connection? brazil?

  37. jm2375:

    GO WAHINE!

  45. kanole:

Any updates on UH softball anyone?

  46. HiFlyer:

    Hawaii down 4 - 6 top 7.

  47. HawaiiMongoose:

Did UH start Parnaby instead of Ricketts? Against BYU?

  48. mctruck:

Was reading my Dallas Morning News sports section and there's this article about Louisville from the BIG EAST making their intentions known to conference membership. Which is to leave the BigEast to join either the Big12 or ACC whenever that happens?

Ahyah??, Boise and SD still want to join a conference slowly going down the drain??

  49. Stephen Tsai:

    Louisville should leave.

  50. Ralph:

    Parnaby started.

  51. HiFlyer:

Darn, Wahine go down 4 - 6, next game at 4pm HST against winner of FSU/La Tech.

  52. HiFlyer:

Next game is at 3pm not 4pm.

  53. kanole:

Ouch! Thanks for the update HiFlyer.

  54. whitey:

    Go Softbows.

  55. whitey:

Stephanie and Kaia are the 1-2 punch and look for both of them to take it to the top.

  56. madeinhawaii:

Kaia will have to carry the team this afternoon. Rickets is worn out for the day.

  57. A-House:

Interseting call 3rd strike in top of the 7th inning where UH batter, before the pitcher winds up, steps away from the plate, pitch arrives, and ump "rings the batter up".

What is the rule in college softball? Must the batter tell the ump and wait for a response or does the ump make an automatic call once the batter steps out of the batter's box?

  58. d1shima:

WOOHOO! 3 run jack by Bennett gives the BaseBows the lead, 4-3!

  59. d1shima:

  81. Ralph:

Fresno state vs La Tech is halted due to lightning. FSU up 6-0 B3. UH was scheduled to play the winner at 3 p.m. HST, no mas, could be a long evening for UH.

Winner of the UH game must win twice tomorrow over BYU to win the WAC tournament. If UH game is rescheduled for tomorrow, we could see UH playing 3 games to win the WAC because BYU won' play on Sunday and Sunday is selection Sunday for the NCAA regional.

  82. Ralph:

Up date, WAC softball tweets that the game has resumed.

  83. HiFlyer:

    FSU up 8 - 0

  84. d1shima:

    BaseB :-( ws

  85. Ralph:

FSU up 11-1 T5, this could be the inning- run rule for FSU putting tournament back on time track.

  86. Ralph:

11-2 FSU. UH should be playing soon.

  87. Ralph:

OC sports will televise the Na Wahine game at 4:05 p.m. today.

  88. HawaiiMongoose:

I know nothing about softball. Zero, nada, nothing. But as a dumb fan I still have to ask the question: why didn't Ricketts start against BYU?

Parnaby is a great pitcher, but Ricketts is better. BYU is by far the most dangerous opponent in the tournament. Parnaby got rocked the last time she faced the Cougars. ???

  89. Ralph:

it's a double elimination tournament, Coolen has to use his pitchers wisely, a team will play a minimum of 3 games (winning out) or 5 coming through the losers bracket. Parnaby is a good pitcher, one of those days, walks, timely hits, and 2 illegal pitches called resulted in 6 runs.

  90. Ralph:

6-0 Na Wahine T3 with UH at bat, Majam and Kliebenstein each hit a 3 run homer this inning.

  91. jm2375:

OK, again, why is UH the visiting team?

  92. HiFlyer:

    jmxxxx - see al's #38.

  93. d1shima:

  107. PowderPuff:

Of course I want Wahine to pull it out and hush these puppies...BUT, think this blog should be on high alert for a rat (or his 6 other personalities) to crawl out of his hole. If he does, maybe Ariyoshi can come back too.

  108. Wes'side Warrior:

New UH Chancellor selected; University of Delaware Provost Tom Apple.

If approved, will start June 18th.

  126. ai-eee-soos:

    .... That's UH Manoa Chancellor ...

  127. whitey:

    ST, you right.

  128. hossana:

Softball team doesn't deserve to go as an at-large to the NCAA tournament. Can't even win one game and now they're begging to be chosen at-large. Ridiculous!!! Call it what you might despite the great season but they can't win in tournament then they will literally waste their time in the NCAA tournament. Coolen blew it with Parnaby pitiching against BYU......she got blasted by BYU the last time and he puts her in again...IDIOT!!
The team just pressured out...no excuses!!!

  129. al:

only 54 parking passesd remain in the kam lot.
all others were sold out yesterday.

  130. tommui:

Hope that Dr. Apple, the proposed new Chancellor, will be a friend of UH athletics like Virginia Hinshaw.

Can't find too much information in that regard other than he and his wife have come to Hawaii on their own dime for the last 17-years.

  131. Stephen Tsai:

As I understand, the new chancellor won't be overseeing sports as much as the two previous chancellors. The Manoa campus has a lot more issues for the chancellor.

  132. Ariyoshi:

The family is sorry for Steve stalk you people.
    His family is a shame.
He no more job/he no more respeck.

  133. Think2much:

Just wondering, are exit interviews a standard practice in college football? I don't recall this being mentioned during the McMackin or JJones era. Or is this just a Chow thing? What is its purpose?

  134. Stephen Tsai:

Exit interviews are required of all UH sports.
Not sure if Mack did them, but his assistants met with players.

  135. whitey:

keeping in touch with your players whether season or not is a very good idea. it is good for the players, coaches, and families. the families trust the coaches with their son/daughter while in school and it creates a closer relationship for all concerned.

  136. whitey:

the benefits are immeasurable and the payoff continues for a lifetime.

  137. BigHiloFan2:

    Howzit Tsaikos.

Is #128 Hossana Steve in disguise? If you have nothing constructive to say than you should keep your ill will somewhere else. These ladies and coaches did their best. Losses happen even in tournaments but to make ugly remarks is out of line.
