Dunnachie suspended after no-contest plea

August 3rd, 2012

Punter Alex Dunnachie has been suspended for an indefinite number of games after pleading no contest to a DUI charge in District Court this morning. But Dunnachie, who was held out of yesterday's practice, will be allowed to rejoin the team on Monday and participate in training camp.

While attorney Paul Cunney insisted Dunnachie had a strong chance at winning at trial, Dunnachie said the decision to accept the charge was based on wanting to "move on" from the incident and rebuild his relationship with teammates and coaches. Dunnachie apologized to teammates at a meeting last month.

Dunnachie's sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 24.

"There has to be some sort of punishment," Dunnachie said this morning. "Coach Chow hasn't given me any sort of indication what the punishment will be. I have to rebuild that relationship with the coaches and the rest of my teammates, and show I'm worthy of being back on the team."

The Warriors' training camp opened this past Wednesday. The first practice was yesterday afternoon.

I'm not an expert, so I defer to the experts. The coaches were impressed with:

• Ne'Quan Phillips — He's an aggressive cornerback, perhaps too aggressive. He had to be warned that he was competing against teammates. But he's physical, fast and doesn't appear to ever tire. Mike Edwards is serving as his mentor.

• Ben Clarke — Quarterbacks are rotated often. Thing is, Clarke, a center, doesn't always get advance warning. Also, each quarterback has a different preference. Some want the snap slightly to the left, some slightly to the right. Clarke adjusted to each style, made the line calls and did a terrific job with his blocks.

• Donnie King — Two weeks ago, he didn't even have a jersey number. Yesterday, he was zigging when defenders were zagging. He's down on the depth chart at slot receiver, and the Warriors don't use slots a lot, but for one day, he provided another offensive threat.

    Hey, top 5!

  5. gigi-hawaii:

I'm glad that Dunnachie has decided to plead no contest and move on with his life. A trial would have meant a protracted suspension. This way he can get the punishment over with and return to the team post-haste.

  6. Bugaz:

Are they going to have baracades up to prevent spectators at the Base practices or as long as you get access to the Base you can watch?

Did you check out the quick video about practice on the UH Athletics page?

  12. Bugaz:

Players not in as good of shape as Coach Chow had hoped for.

  13. Last Call:

I am wondering if other UH athletes who were at this BBQ would have been called as witnesses?

    Good morning everyone!

Great to hear any good news about the o line. Lock up that center spot!

  34. Pauoa Boy:

Wassup with my A-Dub man Tony Grimes? I think he will open as a starter at one of the corner spots. He is a beast on the field and a menace to receivers. Can't wait to see dude play this season, you guys going love the way he plays. Garranz!

  35. Wes'side Warrior:

    Howzit, everyone!

Good to hear Dunnachie's decision to pay the piper and move on.

These quick updates with pics are really exciting! Mahalo, ST!

  36. Pauoa Boy:

OLine seems pretty mean on the interior with Clarke, Sai, and Lefotu... Time to see some mauling going on...

  37. Pauoa Boy:

Ne'Quan... No need ease up if I was you bruddah... Go hard all the time if your teammates cannot handle then they shouldn't be on the field. Cannot wait to see players like you knocking heads on the field. I love that style of play on defense...Aggressive, Physical, and Fast.

  38. A-House:

    Nolo Contendre:

I pleaded that before a judge at 16 years of age for passing a set of car keys to a driver who got into an accident by rolling a car in the canefield.

I was probably the 2nd or 3rd person in that chain of events, but our friendly policeman would do anything to put the "heat" on our group.

Judge tossed the case out and berated the police officer for his conduct warning him that if he continued to "harass" us, the Judge would not be happy.

    Happy days of my youth!

  39. Slugger:

    Back in da USA.

Good of Alex to man up. Nice pic of AussieMom & son. Hope we have a good solution to our punter situation.

    GO WARRIORS!

  40. Hank:

    ...good move Alex. Go Warriors!

  41. mo808:

Hats off to Alex for doing it right by the team! No worries you will benefit from this in the long run! Go Warriors!

  42. uhbooster:

Anyone know what time the practice starts on Saturday?

  43. Stephen Tsai:

Practice starts at 10:45 on Saturday.
But the players probably will be out there at 10:30.

  44. Stephen Tsai:

If Dunnachie works hard, stays on the straight and narrow, and shows remorse, I can see him getting a four-week suspension.
It probably would be a good idea for his attorney not to have any more news conferences, though.

  45. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Good people can make mistakes. Dunnachie's move shows he is one of them. Here's hoping he's back in the game ASAP.

  46. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Ne'Quan is one of the reasons I think our Defense is gonna surprise some folks... its a matter of jelling as a unit as quickly as they can.

  47. A-House:

Keeping fingers crossed that Dunnachie's replacement will do a favorable job to keep opponents pinned while he is on suspension.

I was truly awaiting to see his very high and long punts in 2012.

    big sigh!

  48. A-joe:

We wont need of a punter. We'll score on every drive!

  49. A-House:

  51. MattyBoy:

So is Turner cleared to play or no?

  52. RedZone:

Hang in there Alex. It aint over. Keep working and do what you gotta do. Go foward.

  53. Supastoke:

    Less go "Warriors!!!! One speed......HARD!!

  54. INNOCENT OBSERVER:

the punishment by Chow was light; Dannachie was charged not only with UI, but driving without a license and the car did not have a current safety check. he violated the law three times - why was he driving without a license? does not he know that you should not drive without a license? he should have been booted off the team. he is able to know what is wrong and what is right; there really is no excuse. he brought dishonor to the team.

  55. jiminy cricket:

#54. Have you done anything wrong in your life? Have you ever brought dishonor to anyone? Do you have relatives or friends who have done these things? Have you ever experienced or given forgiveness?

  56. Bowwar:

Like #54, the violation was more than just drunk driving...I believe, the crime should fit the suspension and thus, more than 4 games. Glad to see that Dunnache made the "right" decision for once. Now, his next good decision is to discharge his lawyer.

  57. Bowwar:

Cricket...This has nothing to do with forgiveness, as that will be done. It has to do with fairness and punishment relative to the crime. If Shutter is doing 4 games for just drunk driving, Dunnache should get 4 games "plus", for the additional violations. If anything, Dunnache is "lucky" he's still on the team...Many football programs would have dismissed him from the team without any hesitation.

    Dishonor? Well, ok.
    Innocent observer? I think not.
    BTW, it's Dunnachie.
Why did you spell it wrong?
Don't you know how to spell?
    Really no excuse.
    You brought dishonor upon yourself.
    Pffft...

  62. Last Call:

I must be a good person I have a credit score of 846.

  63. tommui:

According to the SA, Mr. Dunnachie plead no contest to the DUI charge.

As for the safety check charge, it did not have a current safety check. Usually the Court requires you to produce a current safety check and you have to pay $X for an administrative fee.

Mr. Dunnachie says that he has a drivers license but not on his person at the time he was stopped. Again, the Court only requires you to produce the license at the time of hearing. You again will have to pay $X for administrative (court) cost.

The two charges are not regarded as criminal charges.

The serious (criminal) charge is DUI. For that, there is always the possibility of jail time. Of course if he was driving without a license, that is also a criminal offense but not for driving without a license on his person.

  64. oldtimer808:

What are you doing bragging about yourself (Last Call) who cares.

  65. Bugaz:

That's a great credit score! How about co-signing for my auto loan? Lol

  66. Bulla:

    Koakane,

BIG MAHALOS FOR YOUR KOKUA this past Saturday. I think I saw you watching the Governor Friday night also :) On behalf of the 20,000+ that were at Convoy of Hope Hawaii.... MAHALOS :)

  67. Shoko:

I remember being cited for no proof of insurance and not wearing seatbelt. Went to court and told the judge I had insurance, but couldn't find it at the time of the stop. After showing proof of insurance, the judge threw it out and all I had to pay was the seatbelt violation.

Maybe the judge will just throw out the license and safety check violation and impose a sentencing just for the DUI. As for additional game suspensions for the license and safety check, that would be a first time I heard of that.

  68. Shoko:

I think ST should be a PR guy or a damage control specialist.

  69. gigi-hawaii:

It's odd that one would not have a driver's license in one's wallet.
After all, sometimes you have to show ID when using your credit card.
Though I don't drive that much, my license is always in my wallet for identity purposes.

  70. Shoko:

Alex's mom flew out here just to show support for her son in court? Guess its true that a mother's love is unconditional. Sort of touching, no?

  71. gigi-hawaii:

    I agree, Shoko.

  72. A-joe:

Don't you just love it when our resident legal counsel steps forth to bring simple clarity to a judicial matter?

  75. Kevin:

Some with still harsh words for Dunnachie… People in recent memory have done FAR worse and gotten away scott free with less judgement.

Again I wonder what happened to “he is someone’s son”? Where is the “aloha” for that?

Or are the words of encouragement to move on and make good reserved for da keiki o ka aina for some?

    Selective “aloha”.. typical for some….

  76. mikey:

Think we should all ez up on Dunnachie.
He like Shutter and Tachibana knows what they did was wrong and have to live up to this.
Let Coach Chow handle this they are all suspended for now.
They have apologized to the teammates.
They have only to prove to re-gain their trust from the team and coaches.
It's all up to them to prove themselves once again
We all need to move on and support the players.

  77. mikey:

How's the practice coming along today?

  78. mikey:

I've driven without wallet many times.
One time I've even got into an accident. Going to Times 8 blocks away.
Good thing I was only 4 blocks away from home and called home to bring the licence.

  79. Padron:

Dunnachie, an Aussie, may not have a Hawaii State driver's license. Do you need one to drive the Outback?

  80. mikey:

One disappointment watching the Olympic is USA Boxing, the men are all going home.
Guess most men boxing are into MMA. Maybe they should bring MMA into Olympic.

At least the women boxers are still in the game.

  81. AllG:

What happened with Turner thought he was good to go? Is he out for this season as well? What courses is being offered at this point of the year?

  82. AllG:

If we have Harding doing that rollout Rugby style punt that could be a real weapon for us. He is a threat to take off and run and will be hard for teams to defend.

  87. Shoko:

Silver and Blue Sports website did a story on Ault and Rolo and what to expect. Might answer some questions on how much of an impact Rolo might have coming this season as well as the relationship between the two.

“You’ll recognize some of the Hawaii offense,” Ault said. “But, remember, they went to the Pistol last year, too.”

  88. manoa#1:

    #54 innocent observer,

you are right it is a light punishment. espeacially after chow talked to the team like couple of hours before he was arrested for DUI. he just told chow f-u and your meeting and went and break a team rule and chow lets him get off lightly. because chow needs a punter cause our offense will have a hard time moving the chains.

  89. oldtimer808:

Next time keep it to yourself, there are other ways to judge an individual. Give your credit score to the banks, mortgage people so I say bragging.

  90. oldtimer808:

Let the coaches handle the situation with their student/athletes. The coaches know each player and their overall character. We live in a society of contradictions and attitudes and we all make mistakes...repeat....we all make mistakes....big and small...so let these players be already.

And then — poof — he was good to go, as in he went back to the mainland.

  123. Stephen Tsai:

Yep, Rykin Enos is back. Spoke to him today.
I do not think that UH will be adding any players on the first day. I think they're sticking to the 102.

    ST,

So does that Mean he will not be playing this year?

  129. Stephen Tsai:

    Turner?
That I don't know. The coaches have indicated there's still a chance.
Same with Fields, who is in Hawaii.

  130. BigHiloFan2:

    Turner. Fields.

okay Coach, call in da FBI . interstate fraud. investigate da charge Obstructing Football Operations. who da persons in upper campus whoz bloxxin up da wheels??? August 1, good to go. August 3, gone. taking tests in Washington Monday.

geezus be jesus. i tink i'm gonna faint!

  131. Ipu Man:

BigHilo, you can be proud of UH higher standards.
We are the Stanford of the Pacific---except for one thing...money.
And football is/was the Golden Goose---even for female sports---
and now they are killing it...so you can be pround of UH, even tho
they don't have enough money to look like a campus, nor any
toilets for the lady's softball team. They think it grows on trees
in your back yard via various tax "revenue". No, we are not like
Notre Dame, University of Wisconsin/Washington , Texas, LSU, Alabama
and other shabby institutions. We are smarter.
    No?

  132. Ipu Man:

So instead of cheering "Go Warriors!" this fall,
let's all give out a shout to upper campus, "Go Academia!"...
And tie coach Chow's hands behind his back along with one of his legs...

  133. Stephen Tsai:

I think with those two cornerbacks, it's a matter of them completing work they need to complete. Simple as that.
It's unfortunate because with both, UH would have a surplus of good corners. Now they'll have enough. I guess greed is a bad thing.

  134. Stephen Tsai:

Dunnachie has a valid driver's license.
He just didn't have it with him.
I used to think that was a technical thing. But I think you actually can be assessed a fine.
I remember I didn't have my registration in the car. But I had the registration sticker, and an easy check would show the car was registered to me. But nooooo.

  135. gmahoney:

I paid the pizza man with a check, left my wallet on the counter. Then I left the house and drove to town with no wallet, no license. It could happen.

  136. Ipu Man:

Yesterday the news buzz wuz Olympic medal winners get a cash award
from their governments (and are taxed also for the metal content in their medals).
So tonight, I see "Dart" throwing Olympians that would make an English pub proud...
And think, gee, those guys can get twenty-plus thousands of dollars if they aim right.
And they don't have to break an ankle, or swim miles and miles everyday to "earn" it.

  137. BigHiloFan2:

    Ipu da Man!

    I agree 100%

    "Go Academia."

an wen day tink day got it all figured out, along comes Wanda
and den dey blame da fiasco on a nice coddly kinda guy.

like i said befo, geezus be jesus. i'mma gonna faint.

we need plenty speedy kina corners. plenny plenny.

  138. gmahoney:

Once upon a time, the C & C would send out a reminder when your safety check was about to expire. Now I rely on the kindness of strangers to point out when my safety is already expired.

  139. BigHiloFan2:

    137.

    ST

you tink dat da Wed "good to go" rap wassa phony? no tell me dat. da Warriors needa upfront ponyman who can cover da corners, make da spread, be svelte, make da team be ready for 9/1 USC.

the two dogs are here. that tells me they're good to go. they needin tutorialz? easy. JASON!!!!!

    ahem....

I knew a guy who made his own report cards. like gmahoney said, it happens.

  140. BigHiloFan2:

    meanwhile,

Alex Dunnachie. keepa going big guy, keepa going. winning is a journey, not a destination.

  141. Ipu Man:

gmahoney...maybe that's like a Georgia speed trap, you know where they
hide behind a billboard to "catchya"... Gotta get revenue everywhichways...
wait till they turn on all the cameras and send in traffic tickets automatically...
(be careful on those 45 mile an hour parts of the freeway...you will get rear
ended trying to obey the law---dammed if you do dammed if you don't.)

  142. Ipu Man:

Clark Gable said it best, "I don't give a dang..."

  143. tommui:

    GIGI hasn't mention food today.

  145. SteveM:

    fuud.

Cheeseburgers in Paradise, Wolfgang Puck, Lulu's and the Queen Kapiolani breakfast buffet. Didn't see the Ted's Bigger Burgers in the Waikiki Grand next door until heading for the buffet on the last day. :(

Driving home up Kapahulu ave, stopped at Leonard's malasdas and Duck Lee for char siu and roast port (as recommended by Al and tommui). Ahhh, polynesian paralysis until dinner.

If Alex got drunk at a club or bar, could they get in trouble for serving alcohol to someone with no ID to prove their age???? Hmmmm?

  147. BigWave96744:

BTW, if you are going to Joint Base Pearl Harbor to spy on practice, make sure you have your drivers license and drive the exact speed limit. MP's will tag you for going 1 mile over the posted speed limit and driving on Base with no license can land you 30 days in the federal poki.

  148. BigWave96744:

Oh and make sure your safety check is valid. I don't think they have a grace period to get your car checked up. And unless your friend or uncle is an Admiral or C.O., best not to drop names if pulled over.

  149. al:

st...would you agree that schroeder is the one?

  150. al:

ipu man...between uh-manoa, uh-hilo, chaminade, hawaii pacific, and er, heald, i sure hope that uh-manoa will stand out and be stanford of the pacific.

    okay, just joking braddah.

  151. al:

fuud...while the roast pork and char siu is very good at duck lee. nam fong on maunakea st is still my favorite.

i think tommui would tend to agree on this as well.

  152. papajoe2:

Coach Chow said that he will give Schroeder reps because he wants to see what he can do, since he already knows what the others can do (or cannot do). I trust coach will pick the best to lead the team. Isn't too early to pick a qb without pads yet? His foot speed seems to be lacking and if he's the best we got then so be it. Did not play at all at a lowly Duke.

  153. SteveM:

Al -- I agree that duck lee char siu is pretty good...but there could be better. I give it an 7.5 on a scale of 1-10. The roast pork a little lower. Will try nam fong one of these days.

  154. SteveM:

...of course, taste is very subjective. Your mileage may vary. :)

  157. Kekoa:

It's hard to enjoy Roast Pork/Duck or great tasting Char Siu, when we are choking from all this freakin SPAM!

It's too early to say with any certainty who QB1 will be. Good luck to all as they pursue the dream.

    Winning is everything, losing sucks!

    Right BHF2?

  158. BigHiloFan2:
