Multi-talented player fond of UH; $$ game in 2016?

Fitou Fisiiahi of Kaiser High said he told the UH coaches he will accept their football scholarship offer.
It is considered to be a soft commitment at this point because he will not be able to sign a letter of intent until Feb. 5, 2014 and, in the meantime, he would be open to fielding "other options." Oregon State and Utah have shown interest.
Still, it is a significant initial step for the Warriors in their pursuit of one of the state's top high school juniors.
"I like the coaches and the players," Fisiiahi said of the Warriors. "I know they're losing games now, but I think Norm Chow is working hard. ... I'd like to go there."
Fisiiahi is 6-2, 240 pounds, and can play linebacker, defensive end, defensive tackle and fullback.Kaiser coach Rich Miano said Fisiiahi is comparable to UH running back Joey Iosefa if Iosefa, at his current weight and skill level, were playinghigh school football now.
In the past two games, Fisiiahi has 10 sacks. Even with those stats, Miano said, Fisiiahi might be a better fullback.

Personally wouldn't really consider Utah or UCLA to be "big name". Good BCS programs though. I think Michigan, Bama, Texas, Penn, Ohio State and the likes are "big name". I'm crossing my fingers that it's Texas but I highly doubt it is.
I'll go look through the forums from the "usual suspects" to see if there are any leaks/hints at who it could be.

I was bummed when JD got the boot, now after having one home game in 7 weeks, and the opponents we are facing this year. I am second guessing my confidence that i have had in JD. Even if his time had come, I wish it was done different.

Good to see that we are working on looking at and showing interest in local players, and players in general, early on in their high school careers and establishing contacts. I know other schools go through this even earlier....even looking at pop warner guys.

Great to hear Fisiahi committing, but I think "other options" include a professional rugby carrer as well. The kid got skills as a member and team captain of the High School All American team . He's a beast.

We know that the LSOTP are looking for their own $1M games. So we don't have to worry about Tulane, Marshall, or Grendle Union Polytechnic College - West Ozarks Campus to be one of them.
I doubt it will be anyone from the PAC12. Think about why Bama even considered a H-H with us and I think we can narrow it down. There must be a significant push or pull factor for OOC games. In this case, I think it's a push.

I'm assuming a H-H series here and hence my Penn State guess. If this is a one and done deal it could be any of the 3 teams mentioned.

I think UH will be able to schedule more bigger name teams for home and home series. Look at all the "name" teams that are coming here and recruiting the local boys. It makes it a lot easier to convince a player to attend their school if the can play in front of family, at least once. At the time, I thought that the series with BYU was made for Manti Teo. I guess it didn't work out for them but it's good for UH.

Yes, Hawaii football is strugguling. We have to take into consideration that this is Coach Chow's first year as a head coach while being an assistant coach since, forever. A head coach must contend with offense, defense, special teams, logistics with finances, team travel, egos, recruiting, off field problems, grades and eligibility problems, media, and even disgruntled fans, etc.. Coach Chow might find this overwhelming since he was an assistant coach and really didn't have to deal with so much. Maybe that's why not too many teams have head coaches as a "coordinator" too. Coach must not be the "do it all" coach and have faith in his assistant coaches to coach and just guide them in whatever direction he wants to take after all, he hired them (I hope), so must trust them. He also has some 1st time paid assistant coaches too, which lack experience but sure have energy. Can we, as fans, be patient enough to see this through? While not just losing, but losing horribibly, will the lost of fans make the UH athletic department patient enough to absorb the losses financially while everybody wait out the bad times? I know Coach Chow will be a good head coach in time, learning every year, but does the UH have the patience too?

Food for thought: Charlie Weiss at Kansas, playing his recruits and disregarding most if not all the previous coach's players. This is happening here at UH. The excuse is we have very little talent here and they do not fit in with the Proset scheme or the defense. "Your'e not suiting up for this game." What kind of message does this send. I'll play my guys even though they have no game experience. You can watch from the sidelines or sit in the stands. How would you feel? And yet it appears we are allowing this season to slip by. And Coach Chow and his staff don't know how to turn it around. And by the way, those of you who are high on RF don't know what's going on. He and MRC Greenwood were in cahoots all along. We are not getting a good deal at this time. Wer'e paying out alot for being members of the Mountain West.

papajoe2 -- I find it interesting that in a the midst of 1-5 inaugural season where we have, as you say, "lost horribly", a million $ body bag game looks good. It might not look as good in a couple years (hopefully), but we need the bucks and it is a opportunity for the fans.
We'll wait out the bad times and maybe even get better seats at the stadium... unless we get an AD that figures out there is a correlation between putting your resident fans in Hawaii's tropical sun and lack of ticket sales.

My guess is that UH approached Michigan with the idea of filling one of the pukas vacated when Notre Dame decided to cancel its annual series with the Wolverines (which happened recently after Notre Dame agreed to play five football games per year against ACC opponents in conjunction with moving its non-football sports from the Big East to the ACC).

If so, it was a pretty akamai move on UH's part. Generally we want to play home-and-home series rather than settle for one-and-done "body bag" payoff games, but a trip to the Big House would have not only monetary but also recruiting benefits.
The interesting question is whether Michigan (or Ohio State or Penn State, if it turns out to be one of them instead) would be as interested in making a deal if the Warriors were 5-1 instead of 1-5.

Found this on ESPN Recruiting regarding Marcus Kemp:
Senior wide receiver Marcus Kemp (Layton, Utah) received a scholarship offer from Hawaii and quickly committed to the Warriors, multiple sources report.
"I really like the coaches and the program," Kemp told the Honolulu Star Advertiser.
This spring on the Nike Combine circuit, Kemp measured in at 6-foot-4, 173 pounds and registered a 4.9 40-yard dash, 4.44 20-yard shuttle, 32.7-inch vertical and 72.54 SPARQ.
Doesn't sound like a sub 4.6 to me!

I never played college ball, but will quickness make up for the lack "speed"?
How much of a difference does 0.3 seconds make with pads?
I used to run a 6 seconds flat over 50 yards in barefoot or with keds shoes on grass or graveled track (Farrington HS). My friend let me use his younger brothers shoes w/ spikes and he said I was much quickers - sure felt that way as the spikes grabbed the grass. oh well, I guess I was still slow by a coaches standard. BTW, state record back then was 5.5 seconds over the 50 yards.
Back to the drawing board.

I have to agree with Bradda Kimo on this one. Its one thing to lose a close battle. Its also another thing to lose gawd awfully like they have been these past couple of weeks. There is an "in-game" adjustment problem and also a game plan problem with the coaches.

Festival could use a good, comprehensive docu' on Hawaii Warrior football from June Jones to now. Maybe from very beginnings? One o'those that are like the Jake documentary and the internment camp documentary, sell out fast, rush line only, added screenings.
Can do one docu' on one infamous Hawaii game -- BYU vs. Hawaii when Detmer got his Heisman.
Would have to involve people like Tsai, Stephen for accuracies and clarities. And overrall drop serious knowledge of Hawaii football.
Any budding film makers can take this idea, unless a Grease -- who is not a film maker -- does it first or commissions someone to do it first.

I always liked having names on jerseys. When NC removed the names I was kinda excited. I bought into the "we not I" plan. Halfway through the season and I think I am going back to wanting names. It just makes the games easier for me to follow.

I think Kemps' 4.4 20-yard shuttle is pretty good. But, I don't think that 4.9 40 is correct if he runs a 4.4 shuttle.

To me when it comes to the 40 it depends on what position you play, how the coach uses you and what you got in the uptake. If it takes you a second longer to decide what you are going to do then a 4.5 would be more like a 5.5. I prefer game speed. If he is to be used in the redzone I don't think that the 40 is important. I like size in the slot. Dbs and lbs will have a harder time going over the back of a bigger receiver. It seems that is what they have been doing to our smaller receivers. I have also seen it happen in the pros.

I would rather have an AD that looks out for opportunities to boost the bottom line than an AD that is concerned if fans get hot sitting in the sun for a day game. Besides for a day game, it will either be against a big name opponent and on ESPN. The majority will still be in the late afternoon as the sun sets.
We CANNOT draw a line to say, “hey we can only play after 6pm because some people don’t like the heat”.
That IS pretty selfish to demand and expect exceptions.

Yes sir. Student-athletes thrive on big time challenges whether people or not accept that fact.
We the fans of underdogs get all concerned about getting whooped and all the while the student-athletes are just psyched up knowing they get to go against the best and get a shot at the impossible.
If any student-athlete in ANY sport feels otherwise… Im sure the university offers something in interpretive dance class or ceramics.
And NO, this is not an assumption. Just ask any one of them…

any athlete wants to compete against the best.
sometimes aunties can be too much auntie... but i do love the concern, passion, heart, and love they have.
i think "our kids" who are men, would much rather play a team like a michigan and travel there, see the atmosphere, get the experience, and 20 years later talk about it to their own kids or later grand kids much more then "we stayed home and played lamar".
speaking for myself, If i were ever so blessed to have the opportunity, I can take a 50pt. beat down on the road against a big time school better then a 50pt win at home against Lamar. I might gain a win. But a win compared to a once in a lifetime experience is for me no comparison. I'm pretty sure Savannah St. guys moved on and are now using their beatdowns from bodybag games to their advantage in everyday things for the rest of their life. I mean if you are going to lose by 50, let be from Alabama instead of San Diego State if you know what i mean.
I'm all for body bag games. I'm sure Louisiana Monroe and Appy State were too

Unfortunately, the cost has grown. The Na Koa Football Awards Luau "Tickets are $50 for adults and $25 for children 4-12. Children 3 and under are free." I think Coach Chow had the right idea and right price. If the Warriors were 5 and 1 now, and contending for a conference championship, I would consider this.

Coach Chow. Watching the L & L show tonight Mike Lafaele touched on something that I couldn't quite put my finger on. He said he thought the entire culture of the team has changed.
Mentioned this team lacks emotion. Said he saw them work hard in practice but without the emotion his and previous teams practiced with. Said they play without emotion.
It dawned on me that this team does reflect their coach's personality. Chow is a hard working, intelligent coach who rarely displays emotion. Says he doesn't believe in rah rah type pregame or half time speeches.
Chow seems to be taking the cerebral approach to solving his teams problems. Viewing film, correcting schemes, reevaluation personnel. He should do these things but he should get out of his comfort zone and try to inject some FIGHT into his team.
Walking out arm in arm to start a game is so Chow like. Emotions under control ready to match wits with his opponent. This is from a coach who for most of his career viewed the game from the coaches box. Away from the sidelines where emotions flow with the rythm of the game.
I suggest people watch the rerun of the L & L show. I suggest Chow watch the rerun. It mignt dawn on him what the team needs most is a fighting spirit.

Yes, I know. I am in football mode though. Volleyball does sound like a good idea for the weekend. Wife and I were actually supposed to go watch the Wahine play CS Northridge, but we got our dates mixed up. I was pretty disappointed. Maybe I can convince her to go this weekend.

Dates mixed up... Not too long ago was headed to a game and before hand kept trying to call a friend of mine who I was supposed to meet since they were there early and had my ticket. Kept calling calling and calling and no answer just to voicemail.
Got to the corner of University and Dole and 0 traffic or not the usual sign of people turning into Lower Campus. As I turned off Dole and into lower campus road, in the opposite direction I see libero Ali Longo on her moped leaving campus...

UH students who complained of paying an athletic fee, coupled with increase in tuition should stop and take a deep breath. Here's a report from " the Oakland-based Institute for College Access and Success" which states that Hawaii students have the second lowest student debt in the nation.
"Just 51% of graduates from California's public and private nonprofit colleges took on student debt, compared with 66% nationwide, and those loan totals averaged $18,879, which was about $7,700 below the national average.
Only students in Utah, $17,227, and Hawaii, $17,447, had smaller loan totals, the survey found. The high debt states were clustered in the Northeast and Midwest, with New Hampshire, $32,440, and Pennsylvania, $29,959, at the top"

I checked the recruiting sites, I see that Chow has an exciting JUCO transfer DE coming in for 2013. Charlie Tua'au. Apparently he's on of the top DL JuCo players in the nation, so he should be an immediate impact. And God knows UH needs DLinemen for next year!
He's 6'5", 270lb DE ... that's solid! He also received an offer by Nebraska and UNM. So this is a nice win for Chow!
Also, David Moala has committed... 6'2" 305lb DT.
So the DLine, if nothing else, will get much beefier for 2013. Which is exactly what UH needs. In a 4-3 defense. the Dlinemen need to clog up the 5 OLinemen, that way the LBs can make the plays. As the freshmen LBs: Garcia-Williams, L. Williams, & Fonua get bigger and one full year of experience, the front 7 will be much better next year. Talent wise, it's still average for MWC, but UH won't get gashed like they have been this year.
I'm not saying 2013 will be a 8 or 9 win season, but UH appears to be much better on paper in 2013 vs going into 2012 season. And that's before Chow completes his recruiting class. My honest opinion is that UH will be about 6-6 next year. Which is a BIG step in the right direction. (barring major injuries, of course).

From the recruiting sites... I see that Chow is targeting big WRs, big DL, and DBs. We just got the commitment from Marcus Kemp (WR 6'4"), and Chow has offers out for Ammon Barker (WR 6'3") and Malique Belfort (WR 6'3").
I think UH has a good shot at Barker. Barker shows very nice hands, but doesn't show a much speed. His size will create mismatches in the red zone. Belfort will be a long shot, he has a lot of offers to choose from that's much closer to his home.
UH is also one of the top 5 choices for Kamalei Correa (24/7 has Correa as the #5 Hawaii prospect). Given his family's history with UH, there's a high probability he's coming.
UH is also in the top 5 for Koa Kaleopaa (LB 6'3", 250lb from CA).
I also noticed Chow is working his old recruiting grounds from when he was at Utah & BYU and is tapping into LDS recruits. I also anticipate him contacting Lane Kiffen to try and get his targets that can't qualify for USC, so there could be a wave of late commitments once these players get denied at USC or any other high level education school.
