UH to play Michigan in 2016
By Stephen Tsai
The Warriors will be going to Michigan for a game in 2016.
The Big House will pay big kala: UH will earn $1 million for the appearance, according to sources.
Credit Rockne Freitas for arranging this deal. Freitas said he played at the Big House twice – with Oregon State and an NFL exhibition when he was with the Detroit Lions.
* * * * *
It's Election Day, which means the polls are open and UH is closed.
It also means that the athletic department complex will be without water this morning. That's an inconvenience for coaches and student-athletes who either are preparing for events or in off-season training.
* * * * *
It appears Mike Edwards' shoulder injury is not as serious as initially believed and he is expected to be available for Saturday's game against Boise State. He probably will sit out this afternoon's practice, but he should be good to go in the next couple of days.
* * * * *
For those who wondered, Robert Kekaula is the play-by-play announcer for OC Sports' telecasts of UH football games. Because this is televisions sweeps period, he was required to remain in Hawaii for the past two road games. Kanoa Leahey, as always, did a good job as the replacement.

Not exactly sure. Not sure if they turned it off for maintenance. That would be odd because the school is closed and, well, who would do the maintaining? Bob Coolen? A-House? Another UH mystery. But if I were a visitor, I wouldn't try to take any short cuts through bushes today.

Televisions sweeps? How about Kanoa Leahey as play-by-play; Robert Kekaula as color.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:28 am
I never liked the idea of pre-set sweeps.
I think it should be an average over the entire year.
That would be like basing newspaper circulation on election weeks.

Koot Monning.
Speedy recovery to Mike. He's one tuff sunamagun.
Bradda Kanoa Leahey sounds like a natural for da play by play. Bradda Robert Kekaula is good for da inside stuff.

Hawaii Nike SPARQ Combine test results.....
- Aofaga Wily (Feb. 2010 test results)
http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/combine/_/id/127707/aofaga-wily
- Tyler Taumua (Feb. 2012 test results)
http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/combine/_/id/150281/tyler-taumua
- Abraham Silva (Feb. 2012 test results)
http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/combine/_/id/150266/abraham-silva
NOTE: I would expect that Wily is now faster than he was from almost 3 years ago....probably somewhere around a 4.5 40. I would also expect Taumua to be faster now since he's 15-to-20 pounds lighter now than when he tested 9 months ago.

Word on the street is that he has a girlfriend who either is going to or is attending BYU.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:49 am
Need I bring up the fact there are more than 6 billion people on the planet, and more than half are women. The odds of getting a girlfriend are very good; odds of getting a football scholarship, not that good. Take the scholarship, then attend the campus parties.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:52 am
interesting, bc his other offers are to Arizona State and Oregon State. i personally would go to either ASU or Boise. screw Utah.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:57 am
If you're 50 miles away in college, you might as well be 1,000 miles away.
Student-athletes don't get to wander that far off campus during season.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:00 am
If it came down to Oregon or Oregon State, I'd take the Nike swag.
If it came down to Utah or BYU, I'd go with Salt Lake City.
If it came down to Boise or Hawaii, I'm going with green. Boise is a nice, peaceful place for old farts like me. If I were young and athletic, I'd choose Manoa.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:00 am
More than 3 billion women on earth. Maybe its not so easy to find a girlfriend considering how much time some have spent on the blog as of late....

GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
Top whatever.
On to the voting booth.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:09 am
While would be great for Warriors to get Kamalei, JMHO that he's been the 3rd best DE this ILH season....behind Titus Failauga (Pac-5) and Canton Kaumatule (Punahou).....probably on-par with Ruairi Brady (Punahou), Kingston Fernandez & Thordan Latu (Kamehameha).
Might be a better prospect to play hybrid DE/OLB instead at the next level. Same goes for Ualesi Sale (Aiea).
Losing Paipai at the hybrid DE/OLB next season will be a big loss for Warriors.....since no obvious replacement candidates in the fold.....other than Iuta Tepa.

ST,
What's going on with Hawaii football? I know you've stated to me already that they're a very young team and time is needed, but come on....it's like Hawaii is a high school football team playing college football teams! Something just doesn't seem right. UH keeps getting blown out every single game! It's like I expect them to lose every team we play. I can't believe that we are that bad! Heck, we won more games last year with almost the same players we have this year. Do you think this will be another repeat of the Von Appen Era?????
November 6th, 2012 at 8:13 am
Several years ago, I went to the Great Alaska Shootout. A family serves as our host for Thanksgiving. There's a guy at the party who is with a woman. The next night, we're at a bar, and we see that guy with another woman. At the time, the ratio in Alaska was 10 guys for every woman. The greedy bugga had two women.

24. I think Tepa is the guy to replace Falemalu. I don't know what our D line looks like next year with academic status of Dejon Allen and injuries to Friel and Samia but we need to sign 2-3 JC DTs in my opinion. Quality ones too.
We need to salvage this season somehow and Moala and Tuaau are must signs.
I would probably sign 1 JC Safety. Marrell should be solid by next season. I like Jerrol Garcia Williams at LB. Don't know what we have after that though. Fonua needs to be a lot more aggressive. Laurel comes back but his production has been down this year.
Offensively, I dont even know where to begin. If our O line doesn't improve, it doesnt matter who our QB is. Dont trust our WRs. Chow should probably call more quick read throws. I felt like our O line was pretty decent in the beginning of the year. And it just gotten worse.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:19 am
Kent Untermann, Blaine Gaison, among other former UH players and graduates who have gone on to successful careers in private business and education would be great ambassadors for the program to recruits.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:20 am
Actually, it's not the same team as last year. The 2011 team had Vaughn Meatoga, Kaniela Tuipulotu, Zach Masch, Liko Satele, etc., on the defensive line. Aaron Brown and Corey Paredes were the linebackers. The offensive line was very deep. UH was really fortunate to have that string of fifth-year offensive linemen — Kia, Letuli, Lefiti, Leonard, etc. all those years.
Mack's biggest gripe was that he claimed JJ didn't recruit his last two seasons. Well, that obviously, wasn't true. I thought Mack had deep recruiting classes in 2008 and 2010. They lost way too many prospects in 2009, and I think only four coaches were recruiting last year.
You reap what you sow.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:20 am
Wonder if UH even looking at the Mililani HS DL/DEs Mene Perese and/or Dakota Turner (a SDSU verbal commit).
Both late bloomers with legit 6-3 height & body frames to gain alot more muscle mass.
Hmmmm.....????
November 6th, 2012 at 8:22 am
Recruiting is going to be crucial, no doubt.
Chow said on the news last night that he loves the guys we have on the team, but need to emphasize recruiting to shore up the overall depth and strength of the team.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:23 am
Jeezy:
I think Pierce and Fields will make it next year.
Allen is still iffy.
Still don't have a definite number, but it looks like they'll be bringing in some linemen, receivers and DBs. They're set at QB and RB for a while. Not sure how they'll address the long-snapper and punter situation. Anyone else notice that Fresno State's long-snapper (Chad Preacher) was a UH walk-on a couple of years ago. I think Mack cut him.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:24 am
Kapakahi:
Yes, they are.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:26 am
Aside from Kapua Sai, a Utah transfer, there are no juniors or seniors on the O-Line for UH. Just have to deal with it, no sense crying about it. But the question is, how did that happen?
I wonder if Coach might consider bringing in one of the assistant S & C coaches from Utah, USC, or UCLA? There obsviously is a lot of work that needs to be done in the off-season as far as getting the players bigger, faster, and stronger.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:30 am
#36,
Warriors defnitely looking to land at least 2 JC DL (Tua'au & Fenumiai) from RCC (same school as JC TE commit Long)....but would generally prefer to get HS kids instead.
OL is young and physcially talented enough....but obviously need to be developed. Chow has stated publicly several times that the previous staff did a good job recruiting the OL talent....but just not enough bodies. Task is for Wiesehan.....to develop the players that Gordy Shaw recruited.....and to continue to recruit more OL talent.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:31 am
deep class in 2008? Haku, Paipai, Hanohano, and Laurel were the only players left from 2008.
2010 is okay but if we look at quality, only Beau Yap, Moses Samia, and Lefotu were caliber players. None of the other have shown much yet.
Overall, Mack didn't really have any solid recruiting classes as far as grading out the whole class.
I'll give Chow credit that his 1st recruiting class is better than any of Macks. But his scheme and ability to make any adjustment with his current personnel is cause for major concern.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:33 am
Oh. Shucks. I thought Kanoa was the new play-by-play guy. Kekaula, (bless his heart),
has such an odd speech pattern and sounds like he has rocks in his mouth. He acts like he
thinks he's such a cool guy, but, his body language is so distracting, with his perpetual hand
gestures and arm waving, that he comes across as a posturing fat boy. Leahey Jr. has an
odd speech pattern as well, but he calls a great game. Robert tries to do the play-by-play as well as be the color guy.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:34 am
#43,
Levi Legay (who was recruited by JJ would've been a returning senior) agreed to "medically retire" at Chow's request.
Bobby Curran was incorrect in statement on his morning radio show.....since Chauncy Winchester-Makainai (Mack's recruit) is a redshirt junior OG who has started a few games and seen considerable game action this season.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:34 am

Jeezy:
Were Rodney Bradley and Aaron Brown part of the 2008 class? I can't remember.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:35 am
44. Of course you prefer High School kids but we have no depth returning and last thing you want to do is rely on Fr and So recruits to carry your team from 1st 2 recruiting classes.
A guy like Tulimasealii would definitely contribute right away. But usually need to redshirt D linemen like Andrade.
Are you really convinced our OL is talented enough? Aside from Lefotu, Muir, and Clarke, I am pretty concerned. I wouldn't mind signing the LT from Riverside. Jacob Seydel. I know I got heat last year for it but I was never high on either of the Sai brothers. My opinion hasn't changed.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:39 am

November 6th, 2012 at 8:39 am
50. Aaron Brown and Rodney Bradley were both 2009 class wtth Alex Green. Brown got hurt so he got a extra year. 2008 was the year Mack signed 5 JC WRs I think that didn't start. Tinoco, Taylor, Blount, Bell, Henry. And I actually liked Tinoco. Henry returned kicks but I wouldn't sign a JC WR if I only planned to use on kick returns.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:40 am
I liked Tinoco, too He had some bad luck (injuries) but he definitely was under-used.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:48 am
#51,
OL players are definitely talented enough.....Coach stated it publicly himself several times....but still need to be developed. The OL players (Afusia, Dew, Lefotu, Loyd, Muir, Shigematsu) recruited by Gordy Shaw have the potential and talent....but need Coach Wiesehan to develop them. Apparently Wiesehan might not be as convinced as Gordy Shaw was....since Warriors are looking to recruit a couple of JC OTs.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:48 am
From what I've read about the coach I get the impression he pays a little too much attention to details. From where they tape their ankles, how they exit the buses for the Warrior walk to how they enter the stadium. Attention to detail is good but ......
If I were Chow I'd loosen up a bit. In prep for the Boise game, I'd tell the players they decide on how to enter the stadium, what music they want played and where to do the haka. The coaches would follow the team unto the field.
Coach give the players a small sense of ownship over the game.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:52 am
Blount also should have played more. But he always had other issues.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:55 am
Hmm. I'll be tactful and just say that your feelings about a certain coach were not shared by some coaches from past staffs.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:56 am
Aloha Kakahiaka!

The HC also needs to have the BIG PICTURE in focus so that those details play their parts...

I liked Mack and each and every one of his assistant coaches. I loved chatting with Rolo, Gordy, Cal, Tony, Miano, Mouse, George, etc. Great guys. But I had a different working relationship with them than they had with each other.

Wasn't Aaron Brown part of the 2009 class along with Alex Greene?
November 6th, 2012 at 9:09 am
#41 "They're set at QB and RB for a while."
Does that include Ricardo Johnson III (2014)?
Johnson, who graduates next year, says he's already received a verbal offer from Chow & Demarest [ http://www.bitly.com/U7fs7b ]. I'm assuming to play QB, but why Demarest unless they're thinking (of Johnson at) DB? Johnson established national cred as a QB in High School Development League, played and developed himself as a QB since peewee, was contacted by Michigan State, Oregon, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Stanford, Ole Miss, Iowa State, Mississippi State, Miami, Cal, Missouri, UCLA, Colorado, and Indiana to play QB.
Not saying Hawaii can compete with those guys, esp if Johnson continues to shine. But hard to believe any position could be "set" after this season, even w/Graham.
November 6th, 2012 at 9:18 am
Probably should have written set for 2013.
In 2014, Graham and Higgins will be seniors, Woolsey will be a sophomore, Zwahlen will be starting his mission.
November 6th, 2012 at 9:19 am
Every UH fan probably wonders how another QB might do.
My biggest fear is we'll follow the path Colorado is taking. We have about the same record and are vitually statistical twins. But Chow is no Jon Embree. He hasn't caved into the pressure and used 3 different QBs to no avail.
Again, many fans have a patience span of 8-9 games.
November 6th, 2012 at 9:20 am
As for the o-line, we do have some good players that can become great players, but Coach Chow are making the same mistake as Coach Mack, That is not putting his o-line players in at mop up time so they can get some game time experiences. "Monkey See, Monkey Do" Monkey DO Monkey get better"

Old School Dave:
I think I saw a Law & Order episode where a woman kept pretending to be a teen. She'd graduate, then end up at another school. In the episode, a teacher who slept with her was accused of statutory rape. When it was learned she was in her 20s, she faced the same charges for having relations with her high school boyfriend.
OK, this is what happens when they practice in the afternoon and I have too much TNT on my hands.

November 6th, 2012 at 9:25 am
55. I just wonder if they are physically strong enough at times. We seem to be getting over powered lately. When after USC game, I came away thinking we had a pretty solid group.
November 6th, 2012 at 9:26 am
#65 Thanks for clarifying. Keelan Ewaliko (2013) too, though I haven't seen him play, don't know where they'll slot. Yeah, just thought of RJIII when citing "1 or 2 blue-chip QBs" on Chow's radar that he might be thinking of (e.g., demonstrating commitment level) by sticking w/Schroeder.
November 6th, 2012 at 9:28 am
I still don't know where Ewaliko plays in college. Def has speed so nice to have him. Think I saw Chow wanted to grey shirt him to get stronger though.
November 6th, 2012 at 9:32 am
#75 Yeah, if KE's stopped growing (5-11), then I could see a switch to DB, esp. with his speed.

Fenumiai's production has been down this year, due to injuries. im not sure if im sold on him anymore. the starting soph DT for RCC, Daniel Fusi got offered by Boise. i wonder if UH coaches are looking at him. interesting that Boise going after 2 JC DTs, in Taimatuia and Fusi.
RCC has another DT who is only a frosh but will be getting a lot of offers by the time he gets his AA, Ajay Fanene.

Paipai's replacement...hmm, does bruddah Siaki Cravens get to come back? Did he get to have a medical redshirt or is he done? Keelan Ewaliko and John Ursua once returned from his mission could be a nice tandem as slot guys. Both have playmaking ablility and quick feet. A bonus is they're both HS QB's. Would be nice to get Pierce in and Fields. Fields could bring that much needed experience and depth at the corner if Edwards leaves. Pierce is another young gun that could contribute right away like N'Quan. I'd like to see Friel finally get on the field though and when Gus Lavaka makes it back from his mission, that could be a nice interior with Samia holding it down, Moala too. Regardless, unless the coaches get their ish together it won't make a difference who's playing.
November 6th, 2012 at 10:21 am
think Cravens is done.
Ewaliko and Ursua would be nice in the slot, but when will that hard head coach ever run 4-wide? hopefully we have another coach by then that will run an offense thats a little more open and aggressive.
November 6th, 2012 at 10:22 am
Aloha kākou,
Just finally watching the game on TV, channel 23.
So Schroeder is looking for a receiver when a Dlineman comes through the line on the left side. He manages to get ahold of schroeder and Schroeder fumbles!
Thatʻs why we need to change the QB!!!!!
Something has to change.

#52 nothing new, even to hawaii. remember in 1995 the university of texas came to town, they too had an imposter that used the name ron weaver. he was 30 years old using documents of a friend that was 23. he was a db and played against UH, he played the whole year. texas had a good team that year too, won 10 games, and went to the sugar bowl. he got caught, served no jail time for fraud. and the ncaa did almost nothing to texas. texas had to forfeit the sugar bowl pay off. they should have made them forfeit all the games that he played in.

November 6th, 2012 at 10:33 am
On recruiting
Seems to me every coach on staff at UH should be assigned an equal number of high schools locally to recruit. For example, coach 1 would recruit St Louis, Kamehameha, Kahuku, etc., and coach 2 would recruit Waianae, Leilehua, etc., and so on and so on, so that all the local schools would be covered and we wouldn't miss out on a Mariota and the many others we have missed out on in the recent past.
This would insure that UH coaches are talking directly to high school coaches, asking for the "scoops" on who, from that high school, UH should take a harder look at, for whatever reason. Seems if UH had been doing this, we wouldn't have lost so many talented kids to the mainland schools. Seems this part of the equation has been missing in years past and, from the look of things now, from the year present.
Seems if UH had been talking to Hao, Mariota would have gotten an invite. I'm happy for Mariota and his family and for the way things turned out for him and his family. He gets to play on a bigger stage, where his talent is appreciated and showcased every week. Under Chow, Mariota would have been a wasted talent, sitting on the bench, playing second fiddle to a duke reject, like Higgins.
Chow being chow, I don't expect this will ever take place. More of a comment for the next coach to think about or for the powers that be at Bachman to think about.
November 6th, 2012 at 10:35 am
Sorry ST, Iʻll take another look.

November 6th, 2012 at 10:42 am
actually, every coach is assigned certain local schools already.
November 6th, 2012 at 10:44 am
Final note for today
If I'm a parent of a talented player, I would tell him to play for anyone but Chow. If you stay home and play for chow, you will warm the bench in favor of rejects from the mainland, no matter how talented you are.
This has been chow's message from the beginning and it has resonated loud and clear for all except the deaf and the blind.
November 6th, 2012 at 10:47 am
we have really upped our game in the recruiting department. the fruits of such labor will bear in a few years.
glimpses of the future are occasionally spotlighted with the likes of garcia-williams, fonua, jackson, phillips, milovale, and the like.

i think its already started...
keith uperesa, who's health has been a big concern in particular of him handling running backs instead of his forte', er, olinemen, has slowly and progressively been asked to cross over to help wisenhan. wouldn't be surprised to see, uperesa's health providing, be given a larger responsibility in this respect in the days ahead.

Aloha kākou,

Hawaii Warriors
@iHawaiiWarriors
Michigan adds Arkansas, BYU, Hawaii, Ball State and Miami (Ohio) to future
Article says the Warriors will play Michigan in 2016. Doesn't make it clear if it's a home or away game.

In the words of Manti Teo, Higgins is a "Uce", so yeah, he would be a gamer. Agreed, Puhi.

$1 million after travel expenses???
Now THAT would be a good deal.
November 6th, 2012 at 11:05 am
I have a subscription...
We just need to go back to identifying solid WRs who can make plays in space. I don't think local WRs is the way to go unless a guy completely stands out on the field. By stand out I mean Kanawai Noa. I actually like Stubblefield more than Tabuyo at St Louis.
This is by far the worst WR corps at Hawaii since we ran the option. Even if we complete a pass, we'd be lucky to get 5 yards after. I still think Gant is the best play maker we have although can be inconsistent at times. I would like to see Chow give Amadi a shot soon. He is young and a guy who could have success if we found some short plays for him allowing him to make a couple guys miss.
November 6th, 2012 at 11:08 am
Michigan added Arkansas, Brigham Young and Hawaii to its future football schedules on Tuesday.
November 6th, 2012 at 11:08 am
At least we wont have to chase Denard Robinson.
November 6th, 2012 at 11:08 am
any official visits this weekend? lots of HS kids have wrapped up their senior seasons.
November 6th, 2012 at 11:09 am
Honestly... Would have preferred getting $1.7+ or NOTHING.
Michigan can afford it and other BCS programs have paid more out to "body bag" opponents. Lets face it, that is what they consider us to be.
November 6th, 2012 at 11:10 am
we wouldnt factor in the QB, Denard Robinson, into our defensive gameplan.
i wonder if our DC will ever be able to defend a college offense?
November 6th, 2012 at 11:11 am
Get away from the election coverage.
Rainbow Wahine vs Stanford on OcSports right now.
Was a GREAT match and was great to be there live.

By the way, folks, start reserving your rooms for next year's game against Oregon State. They're filling up fast.

Oh ye of little faith,
I say no whine before its time.
Of seeds sown through a harsh winter,
Springs nectar of flowers bloomed.
And what of you then?
Ye of little faith.
And come the change of fall,
The fruits of time will bear.
And what of you then?
Ye of little faith.
And what of you then?

#77/#78 Speaking of Oregon State, Tribune-Herald reported (back in Aug) Beavs were interested in Kagawa too (already has 2 scholy offers from Hawaii/Army). Haven't seen him play so couldn't even guess what natural v. best position might be. Already plays a lotta DB; too small (5-10, 184) for LB; but HS coach says anywhere, including KR/PR, wildcat QB. Agree would be intriguing slot option (like KE) as someone mentioned above.
November 6th, 2012 at 11:37 am
cocobean:
Is that a fact?
November 6th, 2012 at 11:38 am
Just a thought, but I wonder if it would be in the cards for Chow to develop some type of returned missionary program like they have at Utah or BYU? It can be particularly advantageous to have a bunch of 22-23 year old linemen with beards on your offensive line going against fuzzy faced 19-20 year olds.
November 6th, 2012 at 11:41 am
Anyone listening to Pacheco right now? just played tele conference and Chows answers have me concerned.
First of all when asked his vision for the program. Response was "we want to be the best we can be." So he goes from saying we want to chase championships the day he got hired to now were in the army.
Next he talks about difficulties about being a HC and he didn't have to deal with other issues that came with it before.
Then of course he threw out injury excuse. But he said its not an excuse. Similar to McMackin. Every year our guys are going to get hurt. Its a given. Part of me wonders the kind of shape and conditioning our guys are putting in off season. Also don't know what kind of strength program we have. We do seem to get hurt way too often.
November 6th, 2012 at 11:41 am
ESPN announcers were praising former UH player and GA, Joe Seumalo's son, Andrew for becoming the first freshman to start at center for OSU in some 34 years.
November 6th, 2012 at 11:45 am
Mr. Tsai -- any detail on whether Michigan gave an "oh, haha, that's right we were supposed to play the Warriors but we chickened [pardon the pun on self] out. Let's set that game, then, finally

Ah.. and I can take that as a fact, I presume?

I see our Oline as a group of good athletes that were on a champion tug-o-war team. They have the size.. they have the muscle.. appearance wise, they look great. Then somebody decides to put them all on the Sumo team without adequate practice and preparation. In 12 match ups how many wins will each have? How many will come out of the season unscathed?
November 6th, 2012 at 12:07 pm
where are my posts? wtf?!
November 6th, 2012 at 12:16 pm
Hmm... looks like next season's potentially big box office money making game against USC will be moved to Thursday... .. Sounds like an ESPN deal.. which means the money goes to the MWC?
November 6th, 2012 at 12:16 pm
Interesting. Michigan had to replace its 2015-17 games against Notre Dame when the Irish cancelled on them. Hawaii is a beneficiary. Good move by Freitas to take advantage of the opportunity.
November 6th, 2012 at 12:16 pm
Did we get burned by the MWC again?
November 6th, 2012 at 12:18 pm
If the USC game is moved to Thursday it will hurt ticket sales and cost UH money. There had better be some kind of compensation.
November 6th, 2012 at 12:34 pm
ST, any possible way you can get this highlight video out to Norm Chow? DE Garrett Marino is a freak at 6-2 260 and I may not be a football expert but this guy can play. Anyone who watches this video can see it. The reason I ask is because he has 0 D1 offers at this point and is probably better than any DE in Hawaii hands down.

November 6th, 2012 at 12:36 pm
The Tulane and Michigan games are good examples where I think Donovan didn't do his job...I hope the new AD is more aggressive in scheduling and holding his coaches to performance goals.
November 6th, 2012 at 12:37 pm
Also want to note that he plays against the top competition in the state too.
November 6th, 2012 at 12:50 pm
i know the coaches dont listen to fans, but u really need the coaches to take a look at Marino. we'd be crazy not to offer.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:06 pm
I wonder who will be the Hawaii head coach to make his debut against Michigan in the big house? Whats next in 2017, Clemson at death valley?
November 6th, 2012 at 1:08 pm
Chow will be a huge success, I'm sure. He's never held a HC position, so of course he has a couple year's learning curve ahead of him. Somehow he got passed over for 25 years. But, anway, after he gets his education, we should all be ready to go!
But in the one-in-a-million chance that Chow leaves after next season, UH ought to think about the consequences of skimping on how much their willing to pay a decent HC. Possibly somebody young, flexible, can communicate with young people, knows how to recruit. And hopefully somebody who has held a HC position in a successful capacity before.
If the budget of UH (received from the state) is $300 million, then maybe coughing up $1.5 mil for a coach with a credible resume isn't such a bad idea. For what is easily UH's biggest PR billboard--the FBS TV schedule--it is actually not a bad price. There is no way UH is going to attract that kind of out-of-state attention for cheaper. Out-of-staters pay full tuition and bring more attention. More attention helps academic prestige of the institution.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:08 pm
Meecheeegan. Seems like big teams like to schedule us when they don't feel threatened. But it wasn't a home and home so I hope the pay off is good.

November 6th, 2012 at 1:10 pm

BTW, any word on Trevor Davis' neck injury?
November 6th, 2012 at 1:11 pm
How do we get Chow to view that highlight video of Marino?
November 6th, 2012 at 1:15 pm
Jeezy... your #130 (12:34pm) above...
Dang! That kid just absolutely crushes anyone he comes across!
While sitting around this past weekend, waiting for our car to get serviced, we got to see something we rarely watch... television! This link is to the "High 5" prep sports coverage by local Fox Sports Atlanta. I was told they actually have sports (field) reporters with cameraman at these high school football games! Click on any of the game scores to watch video highlights of these games.

November 6th, 2012 at 1:15 pm
Not to worry.....since Coach Chow and MV HC Bob Johnson are best buds. That's how UH got on CB Anthony Pierce for the 2012 Signing Class.
Interesting though that Marino is not mentioned among the top 35 Class of 2013 OC prospects....
http://www.ocvarsity.com/sections/article/gallery/?pic=1&id=30353
BUT....if the MV Diablos go deep into the CIF-SS playoffs and even as far as the CIF State Championship games, then Marino is sure to get some pub....if he's worthy.
BTW, the other "local" connection with the MV Diablos is soph OL Adam Tufono (son of former Iolani star Loimata "Junior" Tufono) who transferred from Kaiser HS when Junior moved the family back to the OC this past summer.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:16 pm
Hope that gives us enough time to save up for a return visit back up to Michigan. Would be good to stop by for a few days.

November 6th, 2012 at 1:26 pm
No idea how he doesn't make the top 35 list. Only thing I can think of is he played LB last year and was like 6-1 220 pounds. This year hes at 6-2 260. Everything I've read about him is he's for real. Greg Biggins who does all the ratings thinks he can be en elite player at the next level. No reason to be biased there.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:26 pm
could be grades, since hes only hearing from D-2 schools.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:33 pm
From what coach Chow has said I think he may want to get bigger on the dline.
November 6th, 2012 at 1:37 pm
One of our top targets, Paulo Lepua is 6-2 255. I think if you can play, then you can play.
I mean, I'll take Beau Yap over any of our D linemen.
I do think we need to get bigger in the middle. Outside though, our taller guys haven't exactly done all that much.

Watchin Battleground results is like watching a good national championship football game.
November 6th, 2012 at 3:06 pm
3-prong.
By that do you mean like a national championship college football game, the winner is decided by a few select like how swing states can effect the election?
I thought my vote in Hawaii counted???
I thought national championships are decided on the field???
November 6th, 2012 at 3:08 pm
If Obama wins Florida,
This is going to be a landslide...
November 6th, 2012 at 3:11 pm
Kevin... I agree... I don't understand why electoral college is still functioning... Popular vote would give every voter an equal say...
I hate that if you live in on of 4 states your votes mean more than those in other states...
November 6th, 2012 at 3:24 pm
In this computer age, the Presidency really should be a popular vote. There is no excuse for it not to be. It's not like everything is being hand counted anymore.
November 6th, 2012 at 3:24 pm
jeezy33,
Just forward the info on Marino to Coach Rauscher. Kid got a nice relentless pursuit to the ball carrier. Looks like Kennedy from Waianae, a man amongst boys in the way he plays and wraps up the ball carrier. Would make a nice edge rusher like Beau Yap.
November 6th, 2012 at 3:28 pm
WarriorNY,
When Bush won over Gore, who had the popular vote, it was simply wrong.
Now I did NOT vote for Gore. While I voted for Bush, I am not so full of my own crap that I believed he "won" based on simple logic.
Bush (although MY vote) winning was NOT the will of the people as the simple fact more people voted for Gore.
There is common sense and then there is simple politics and working the system to shortcut results.
November 6th, 2012 at 3:29 pm
ST, I thought 2011 was a real solid recruiting class. Although it was light on O-linemen.
November 6th, 2012 at 3:29 pm
And I voted for Bush twice.
November 6th, 2012 at 3:30 pm
People that have gripes about their voting counting for something have legitiamate concerns.
At least locally, vote counts are being tallied as they should be based on ... LOGIC.
November 6th, 2012 at 3:33 pm
Seriously, these political analysists need to stop using sports terms.
November 6th, 2012 at 3:42 pm
#130 Good link, impressive highlights. Did you watch the game clips? When I looked at the 3 x clips against El Toro, Centennial and Santa Margarita -- the 3 x best opponents listed -- saw a couple of good moments (from #99) against El Toro (although 1 x TFL on a sweep should be credited to blocking miscues btw LT/RB) but not much against Centennial or Santa Margarita (#68, #62, #20 had their moments too). Just hard to tell who #99 dominated in the highlight clip (i.e., how good/bad were the opponents?). Would be great if Mission Viejo somehow met up with Murrieta in the playoffs/championship.
November 6th, 2012 at 3:45 pm
#179 Typo. "#68, #62, [#80] had their moments too"
November 6th, 2012 at 3:47 pm
NBC claims Obama will win Pennsylvania.
Romney ahead in Florida by 12,000 votes with 79% counted.
November 6th, 2012 at 3:57 pm
Hey we're going to play Michigan in 2016.......
November 6th, 2012 at 3:57 pm
Kevin@174,
That's an awesome point..
November 6th, 2012 at 4:00 pm
Obama looks to win Wisconsin.
Romney leading by a margin of 600+ in Florida.
Raw vote in Ohio with 38% counted has Obama at 53%.
Looks like we are due for a Civil War.
November 6th, 2012 at 4:08 pm
Todd Akin looks like a bust.
Good.
Sick bastard.
November 6th, 2012 at 4:21 pm

November 6th, 2012 at 4:59 pm
Anyone know if Chow applied for a head coaching position before? Some of his answers lend me to think that he never gave much thought to decision making particular to the head coaching position and although these things are new to him, I would think that he would have had a lot of time to consider them given his long tenure on the sidelines.
November 6th, 2012 at 5:01 pm
Interesting comment by Monte Kiffin, DC of USC today. After surrendering 730 yards to the Ducks, he said when you give up that many yards it is not the players you have, it is the system and schemes you are running and they are going to reevaluate their entire defense.
For those who believe the blowouts UH is sufferring are bc of the players or lack thereof, you need to reevaluate your thinking. It is a much bigger problem than that. The entire offensive scheme needs to be thrown out and maybe the defensive scheme too.
November 6th, 2012 at 5:03 pm
Chicken Grease,
How stupid do you think some of us are? Directing people from the liberal media to a site that leans conservatively and insinuating that is fair?
No grease, more like Chicken S***.
If you claim Republican, say so and be proud of it but dont cite your bias as being an alternative that you insinuate is fair.
November 6th, 2012 at 5:07 pm
Holy crap. O even leading CO Obama: 871,485 Romney: 814,759 (65%)

I'm sure Mr. Grease didn't mean to mislead anyone... Real Clear Politics actually normally has very good polls that I follow.... And I'm very liberal...
I have to say... I'm starting to think the Pres will win Virginia, Ohio and now Florida... The Obama Organizational skills will be studied for years for these two elections...
November 6th, 2012 at 5:20 pm
Well, whyn't you go look at the 'site, Kevin. Real Politics gives links to those very alphabet channels.

Hope you folks are getting the help you need over there on the East coast, WarriorNY.

Interesting comments tonight on the blog.
To those whose candidates did not fare well tonight, get over it.
To those whose candidates won, get over it ... you did not get elected.

November 6th, 2012 at 5:54 pm
I NEVER agreed with the electoral college process. It lacks common sense. I voted for Bush in 2000 and Gore won the vote of the people. I accept this and acknowledge this. Only a sensible person would. This was my first realization how full of crap this voting system is. Yeah the guy I voted for "won" but the will of the people and democracy was manipulated. It was clear then and its clear now.
Whoever voted for Romney and wanted change should keep their heads up, the people have spoken and Romney won the popular vote. Its simple to understand logical outcomes when you are NOT held and so biased towards party politics.
The electoral college PROVES the leadership of this country is played like a game.
Bush played the game and won, Obama played the game and won. But... did they really win the vote of the people?
Democrats good luck but look at the popular vote, no way in hell does it mean the POTUS did everything right the first time.
Republicans dont spin this and complain about the popular vote. Like how the democrats failed in providing a viable alternative with John Kerry, Romney and Ryan couldnt win their own states.
November 6th, 2012 at 5:55 pm
REDZONE 209 - with the problem we have - ran out of ballots in Waianae and other points and the votes will not get counted until they vote - I think it is safe to say that the President won his own home state.
The Punahou mafia strikes again!

CNN: Romney just took 2,000 vote lead in OH Romney - 2,259,173 O - 2,256,785 (78%); but O just pulled ahead in VA; still leading FL.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:19 pm
The only reason I voted for "Barry" was I want to see a "cat fight" in 2016.
The "Iron Pants Suit" versus the "Hockey Mom."
JK, of course.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:20 pm
i will start my 48 hour hiatus in 4 min.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:23 pm
CNN: Romney lead grows in OH; Romney - 2,295,003, O - 2,275,618 (79%) but won't affect electoral outcome (290 w/OH, 272 w/out OH)
November 6th, 2012 at 6:26 pm
SAWarrior...
Forget about the crazy wager... No worries about it at all about it... We both got different positions politically but we all have similar interests when it comes to Warrior Football...
I def respect your opinions.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:27 pm
Jeezy, that Marino kid would definitely help the Warriors at DE or FB. He is really fun to watch. Good find.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:27 pm

November 6th, 2012 at 6:35 pm
CNN: O leading OH again; O - 2,361,173, Romney - 2,338,708 (80%); fluctuation due to late tallies from O-leaning precincts; fluctuations will continue though call for OH-to-O looks legit.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:42 pm
NHK (the free one; Rease has all 4 channels
). They're addressing the election showing:
Obama 281electoral votes
Romney 203 electoral votes.
NHK news is objective as they come when it comes to reporting foreign news, yes MORE that Real Clear Politics if anyone starts wondering (pardon the indirect pun).
Waiting for Tsai to tell us politicals "shaddap a'eady.". Heh, maybe he just waiting for tomorrow for the official end date, Tsai so objective.
SAWARRIOR . . . think you 48 hour started . . . today, so, THREE DAYS NOW, bwahahaha! A Grease kids w/ya; how gracious of a WarriorNY.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:47 pm
Is there any other local and sports news since the voters are still voting? Can't wait til tomorrow when all the dirty politics are over. Tonight we will see excuses and bitterness. The sun will shine tomorrow.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:48 pm
Believe me gangy, if incoming recruits could come in right away and contribute, yet show case there talent. All will be for nothing if they don't fit into the right system.
Like I said, the placement of players in positions to make plays show cases talent all across the board with all 11 on the field.
WE ALREADY HAVE TALENTED PLAYERS ON THE TEAM. THE QUESTION IS HOW YOU GONNA USE THEM????? HELLERRRR......
November 6th, 2012 at 6:48 pm
Here's something both sides can agree upon with regard to Obama's re-election (and, incidentally, tying in something about the University of Hawaii, no less).
Ahem. Here a Grease goes:
So . . . maybe in this 2nd earned term, the President can finally, FINALLY come to the Manoa campus to do a commencement speech. I mean, it's not like the university WASN'T down the road from his high school and, um, in his birth state. No?
I mean . . . maybe he can give an hour or two to Winter commencement exercises while he's vacationing her during Christmas/New Years? Oh, look!!! It's almost December! Still time for him to do this in his first term.
. . . and that's election day commentary from a Grease.
November 6th, 2012 at 6:50 pm
The Electoral College giveth and it can taketh away. I say bring back the popular vote. Majority rules. Period. Till then, lets work together for a better nation.
Big House? I'm there. Warriors In Da House!!
November 6th, 2012 at 6:53 pm
Agree with WarriorNY that SAW should keep posting.

#68,
JMHO that Class of 2014 RB Adam Noga was the top RB in the ILH this past regular season.
In addition to WR Kanawai Noa, JMHO that there's quite a few local Class of 2015 FBS college prospects....just in the ILH alone.
On the O-team roster, there's....
- LT Semisi Uluave
- DE Canton Kaumatule
- SS Ronley Lakalaka (Steven's younger bro)
.....while the Kapalama-Oahu campus has....
- FB Salanoa-Alo Wily (Aofaga's younger bro)
- RB Kaulana Apelu
.....while the Crusaders have....
- OL Fred Ulu-Perry
November 6th, 2012 at 7:14 pm
Some people have their heads buried in bi-partisan cleavage, and others just want the home team to win. The true Warrior fans have no good candidate in this election. Only a new coach will enable us to escape the current predicament. Down with Chow and his cleavage from a by-gone era. Remove now, or let us hope all talented recruits go elsewhere and put the old man in his grave. As for Polymom, since Chow has proven himself, by record, to be a total chump and otherwise, it doesn't bode well for your son. I'd be looking at other schools.
Question of the hour is whether chump Chow will grant releases.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:15 pm
I totally agree with Keven #216.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:16 pm
What is up with the Sawarrior's 48 hours? What led to that. Sounds Stevie-Wonderish to me.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:21 pm
Romney concding now. Live.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:21 pm
Hey, Linda Lingle just thanked Jett Jasper who headed up her campaign on Kauai. That young man will go places.
GO WARRIORS!!!
November 6th, 2012 at 7:24 pm
Heh, somewhere on an alternate Earth on a blog called 2012 Candidate Beat, posteurs are posting, "SHOULD'VE CHANGED THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE!" and "Karl Rove so stubborn, he needed to change the presidential candidate, what do we have to lose?"
November 6th, 2012 at 7:26 pm
Popular vote switched to Obama.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:29 pm
NHK now showing
Obama 290 electoral votes
Romney 203 electoral votes
Ehy. Change the local office of elections before you start talking about replacing Chow. This delayed printout is ridiculous.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:30 pm
The Connecticut Compromise and Three-fifths Compromise were adopted by the 1787 Constitutional Convention which directs that the election be by a group of people apportioned among the states in the same numbers as their representatives in Congress.

November 6th, 2012 at 7:41 pm
Heh, serious, lau lau head tune in. Looks kooky, heh.
NHK now reporting:
Obama 303 electoral votes
Romney 203 electoral votes
November 6th, 2012 at 7:50 pm
You have to remember that we are representative government and not a democracy.
The Electoral College is a reflection that in 1789, the States were sovereign. In order to establish a national government, the states gave up some of their power but wanted to make sure that they would not be fully merged and lose their identity.
Of course all of this is theory and of interest only to government students as President Obama has won (narrowly) the popular vote as well.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:54 pm
Wow. Keoki Kerr right now on HI News Now offering up some kind of conspiracy theory . . . mentioning the problem w/available ballot areas are where Cayetano won big in the primary.
Stay tuned.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:56 pm
Tom mui,
Times have changed and people vote and make their decisions differently.
Yes Obama barely won the popular vote, but a popular vote is the right vote.
Dont know how we can be proud to "sell" democracy when 9 states make the call for a supposedly national election....
Doesnt make sense. God forbid "sense" plays a part in electing the leader of our country.
November 6th, 2012 at 7:56 pm
No conspiracy. Pro rail folks are not that smart.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:03 pm
President Obama -- duly re-elected -- about to make his acceptance speech.
Man. Now A Grease knows what Lex Luthor feels like at the end of a Superman story arc. Hhaahha.
Congratulations to President Barack Obama!
November 6th, 2012 at 8:05 pm
You know therefore considerably when it comes to this matter, made me in my opinion believe it from so many various angles. Its like women and men don't seem to be involved unless it's something to accomplish with Girl gaga! Your personal stuffs nice. Always maintain it up!
November 6th, 2012 at 8:08 pm
I am more dissapointed today, then when Clinton was re-elected to his second term! I just had to get that off my chest!
Go Warriors!
November 6th, 2012 at 8:08 pm
OOOOOh!!!!! Obama calling out the Hawaii elections office a bit ("by the way, we gotta fix that" [re: his previous mention of long election lines]).
November 6th, 2012 at 8:18 pm
Printout out!!!! Caldwell leading!!! Hirono and Hanabusa leading. Big Isle mayor race very close!!!
November 6th, 2012 at 8:23 pm
Hooooo hoooo, Tulsi, 81%. Looks like a B.J. Penn endorsement didn't help the challenger.
November 6th, 2012 at 8:31 pm
Enjoying a little bag of Skittles and my TV show American Pickers...a little escapism from the reel world!
November 6th, 2012 at 8:47 pm

You fellows are amazing and thank you
coach Chow and staff!!!!!!!!
November 6th, 2012 at 9:30 pm
So happy that voters came out to choose Kirk Caldwell as our mayor! Looking forward to see the rail project move forward.
November 6th, 2012 at 9:35 pm
Ben Cayetano conceding now. Glad this mayoral election is over with the right man heading to the Hale.
Hopefully the city will assist Mrs. Cayetano with finding a place to move her Young Laundry company that is currently located on land where a rail station will be placed.
November 6th, 2012 at 9:38 pm
yHu1M4 Really appreciate you sharing this post.Really looking forward to read more. Keep writing.
November 6th, 2012 at 9:45 pm
I am very much hoping for a productive second term from President Obama. Also looking for more productivity from Congress.
Election pau. Football not.
According to the popular vote, shouldn't UH be starting another QB?
Oh yes I did!
November 6th, 2012 at 9:46 pm
274, is that why he was so anti-rail?
November 6th, 2012 at 9:49 pm
btw, it doesn't matter who won mayor. The rail project will still be a joke and considered a huge waste of money by those who don't want it. Nobody will ever be able to agree on whether or not it is needed. I guarantee you it will stall several more times due to bones, environmental complaints, lawsuits, and incompetence in general. In the end, there will be funtional hovercraft technology before they finish the rail.
November 6th, 2012 at 9:53 pm
Congratulations to K. Mark Takai!
November 6th, 2012 at 9:53 pm
The Aiea overpass repairs are complete and will be open for the game this weekend.
November 6th, 2012 at 9:59 pm
Slipping under the radar in today's election commentary is the fact that two states have voted to increase the stupidity in this nation by legalizing recreational marijuana. Now I am sure there are many on this blog that appreciate a little puff on the brain cell killer, but as a person who has had his life ruined by mistakes influenced by my own drug use in the past, I am strongly opposed to any such legislation.
Great job Colorado and Washington for your complete and utter ignorance and short sightedness. In a nation that is struggling with unemployment and an economic crisis, we are fortunate enough to have a couple of states with their priorities straight. I mean afterall, we have to give all of those unemployed people in WA and CO something to do everday right?
November 6th, 2012 at 10:00 pm
50.1 always beats 49.9.
November 6th, 2012 at 10:01 pm
WA and CO unemployment rates both above national average. 8.5 and 8 % respectively.
November 6th, 2012 at 10:04 pm
I love Europe when you can ride a choo-choo all over the continent on a single rail pass. Same for Japan.
November 6th, 2012 at 10:04 pm
I should correct that nothing has been legalized. Instead, voted for measures to legalize.
November 6th, 2012 at 10:07 pm
kev-1,
*shrugs*....i'll tell you the story one day

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/765614781/High-school-football-Altas-Ammon-Barker-commits-to-UCLA.html
November 6th, 2012 at 10:24 pm
I understand why some believe the negative PRP campaign detracted from the real issues, mainly rail. However the negative campaigning did not target city council candidates who campaigned around the issues again mainly rail lol.
That being said, how many anti-rail candidates won a city council race? Off the top I know that both Tom Berg and Sam Aiona lost to pro-rail candidates Kim Pyne and Carol Fukunaga. The only anti-rail candidate to win was Ann Kobayashi, who with all due respect cannot be beat in that council district.
November 6th, 2012 at 10:26 pm
#287,
Dang. He looked to be a solid WR pick that we could have used. Well, UCLA is movin' on up and looks to be a program lots of future potential. Can't say I blame him for accepting.
November 6th, 2012 at 10:49 pm

duffer, ST ~
No water on Lower Campus yesterday may have been due to a broken irrigation pipe in the area right next to the campus-freeway on-ramp where I believe there is a test planting plot. There was a fountain of water shooting up over 10 ft. yesterday morning at 6:30 a.m.
Glad to hear Mike Edwards shoulder is not seriously re-injured & Saui is better.
