Home stretch
November 18th, 2012
By Stephen Tsai
By Stephen Tsai
The Warriors are off today, then begin resume practicing tomorrow ahead of the final two games of the year – UNLV this Saturday, South Alabama after that — with both at home.
The QB position will be "evaluated" this week. That means Jeremy Higgins will get to prove that he is more like the way he played in UH's first four drives against Air Force than how he was in the second half; that Sean Schroeder is healthy after being rocked on the final play of that game, and that Cayman Shutter will get a look.
It was somewhat mind-numbing to watch first-down dives go nowhere. Variety would be nice. A better push would be better.

how was Colorado tsai? :smile; glad everyone had a safe journey back.
interesting time out yesterday, hope it accomplished what you had on mind

Is it safe?

Koakane:
It was only supposed to be off until I got back. And then I said, hah, I'll just keep it off.

I think it was a good break, gets old hearing the same old stuff.
November 18th, 2012 at 7:43 am
Colorado was cold, but what I realized there's that awkward time in autumn between the falling of leaves and snowfall. Without snow and leaves, Colorado looks, well, dead.

November 18th, 2012 at 7:49 am
A bunch of us were at UH waiting for the buses bringing the Warriors from the airport.
A bus pulls up.
Because of the tinted windows, you can only see silhouettes of activity. I said: Wouldn't it be something if that big bus was only for a women's basketball team?
And then the door opens, and out come Baylor's basketball team.

Maybe the passions generated yesterday have cooled off and the pitchforks and torches have been put away.
I doubt it but hope burns eternal!
Welcome back to the sunshine!

Enjoyed watching San Jose State beat BYU 20-14 last night. Their stadium looked full. Interesting to note that SJSU's HC Mike Mcintyre has slowly been rebuilding the program these past 3-seasons:
2010- 1-12
2011- 5-7
2012- 9-2 (one game remaining)

November 18th, 2012 at 8:04 am
The SA piece by Reardon was spot on. Can't shoot free throws at a high %age, forget about championships and going deep in post season.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:06 am
Off to Costco and a hotdog lunch.
No snow, yet, but it sure is cooling off.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:06 am
What a topsy turvy year in all of college football. Would be wonderful if Manti and his men can make it to the National Championship game.
His story is so heartwarming. How can you not root for an island boy like him?
November 18th, 2012 at 8:12 am
Pete Carroll was a real jerk in how he reacted to Manti Teo signing with ND. Somehow, I'm not surprised that Carroll would react that way. Now wouldn't it be ironic if Manti is drafted by Seattle?
November 18th, 2012 at 8:13 am
SJS last winning season was 2006 before McIntyre took over in 2010. In 2009 they were 2 and 10.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:27 am
Not sure what there is to evaluate in the QB competition for this week. SS in mop up duty against the AF second teamers as Chow calls it was 0-5 and got rocked again. I think this young man is concussed and needs to call it a season.
To start Shutter over Higgins now woe be a head scratcher for me.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:29 am
Is Chow stubborn in starting Schroeder for so long? If he is, he won't admit it.
Did Chow back Schroeder all this time to send a message to Taylor Graham and Aaron Zwahlen and other future QBs, that he will stick with them when it's their time? If he did, he won't admit it.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:30 am
26 Old School: No kidding. Especially after PC told him that by going to ND he would not amount to anything. MT should pull an "Eli Manning" if Seattle drafts him.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:34 am
And what's with NC's quick hook now? For 8 games SS gets unwavering support and now Higgins gets a quick hook?
November 18th, 2012 at 8:35 am
Good Morning Gangeez!
The extended "time out" was a good thing, Mr. Tsai. I agree with Tom Mui. A cooling off period might be a good policy option. Nice to see errybody again.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:37 am
3-Prong: Agree, but Manti is probably too nice of a guy to pull an "Eli Manning" (didn't John Elway also do the same coming out of Stanford?).
November 18th, 2012 at 8:44 am
3-Prong #32,
Not only that, he also said "he" (Higgins) was ineffective and not moving the ball. I'm not sure if I have ever heard him be so direct in his assessments against SS.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:46 am
Go Warriors...
Go Manti
Happy Aloha Sunday!
November 18th, 2012 at 8:48 am
Hey, let's at least give some props to the defense. You know that everyone was expecting a thrashing because of the run game, and they held strong.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:53 am
My thing is this obviously our passing game was working on that first drive so why not continue what works....instead he goes back to dives that net us little to no yards...Why not go with a quick passing game the way Higgins was throwing we would have gained a lot more yards than running the ball 2 out of 3 downs and getting nowhere...also I hope we can all see how he plays favorites now...SS looks completely terrible for 8 games and doesn't get yanked until at least the fourth quarter and he says the reasoning is he doesn't wanna affect the confidence of his starting QB and the team...but Higgins has a bad 2 quarters which had a lot to do with the play calling but wait what's even better is he calls Higgins ineffective and even though Higgins lead us to probably our only first drive touchdown all season....c'mon lets all be fair and call a spade a spade if Higgins getting yanked doesn't leave a sour taste in your mouth....
November 18th, 2012 at 8:56 am
Especially when the AFA defense is stacking against the run and challenging you to pass.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:56 am
Good Sunday Morning Folks! Glad the blog is back! Have a great day everyone!
November 18th, 2012 at 8:59 am
Agree, that the defense played a good and inspiring game as they were flying around.
I have a feelling that Coach will go with Higgins against UNLV. I'm concerned about Sean Schroeder's health after the beating he's taken (a la Dan Robinson in 1998).
3-9
November 18th, 2012 at 9:04 am
Good morning, gang!
Good luck to the Warriors in the next 2 games. Hope Higgins & Cayman get to play. Heal up the heel, Darius.
More WBB today. Couldn't make it yesterday. Tsigh.
A-House,
Are you going to the WBB game today?
GO WARRIORS!
November 18th, 2012 at 9:09 am
La Tech, San Jose St., Utah St. all have great records. Hawai'i can too after this season.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:11 am

Assumptions:
"also I hope we can all see how he plays favorites now"
"Is Chow stubborn in starting Schroeder for so long? If he is, he won't admit it"
November 18th, 2012 at 9:15 am
btw . . . Greg Salas was activated by the Patriots after they released Deion Branch.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:15 am
It makes sense for Coach Chow to *not* announce his starter for awhile. Why not make UNLV prepare for Higgins, SS, and Shutter? What advantage does UH get for giving UNLV that information?
What is said *publicly* by coaches isn't necessarily the full truth. I'm guessing that Higgins knew quite a bit before the official announcement that he was starting in the Air Force game...
November 18th, 2012 at 9:16 am
I noticed that our defense stepped their game up against Boise. The score does not reflect that. But they really did. I think they did an awesome job against Air Force.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:17 am
ST do you know of any commits that will be able to contribute to our O-line next year?
November 18th, 2012 at 9:20 am
#38 Bryson. I agree, chow is a joke. the team was not happy when Higgins was pulled.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:20 am
Looking at the Sagarin Ratings, it looks like UH has its most winnable D-IA games to end the season. It would be nice, and important for ticket sales next season, team morale, and recruiting, for the Warriors to get these games.
46 Fresno State
51 Boise State
56 SDSU
75 Nevada
105 Wyoming
112 Air Force
131 Colorado State
139 New Mexico
149 UNLV
169 UH
20 USC
47 BYU
158 South Alabama
194 Lamar
November 18th, 2012 at 9:21 am
I keep forgetting that when you shut off the blog for a day, you get a lot of pent-up spam.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:23 am
Chow knew Higgins would start on Sunday.
He didn't let Higgins know until Wednesday.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:24 am
No. 49:
That would be inaccurate to say "the team" was unhappy when Higgins was pulled.
They weren't unhappy. They weren't happy. They were trying to get a first down.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:25 am
La Tech's loss means that there will not be any "BCS-busters" this season and UH won't get that $100k or so from a non-MWC team making it. Next season will be the last of this format and there will be a decent shot for a MWC team to get a high enough ranking to get into a BCS game.
BSU and SDSU leaving will cost the MWC some respect from the voters (since they automatically rate BSU highly), but SJSU and USU are bringing solid, improving teams to the MWC next season.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:26 am
Derek Dooley fired at Tennessee. That didn't take long...
November 18th, 2012 at 9:26 am
constantly putting Higgins in 3rd and longs were awesome! luckily Higgins converted some in the first half. regardless tho, the plays we run look like pop warner stuff.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:26 am
Interesting, I didn't realize that Higgins didn't know until Wednesday, 4 days after the decision was made.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:27 am
how would u know? we're u on the field or up in the press box?
November 18th, 2012 at 9:29 am
San Jose St. moving up. Hawaii going down. The difference, coaching and recruiting. Heck, they even have bettter unis. Hehe. And, not too long ago, La Tech and Utah State were struggling too. The difference, Utah St.'s Anderson and La Tech's Dykes, and better recruiting. Notice, they all run the spread offense and they all move the football and score a lot of points. San Jose St. lost to Stanford by 3 points, at Stanford. Utah St. lost to Wisconsin by 2, at Wisconsin. La Tech lost to Texas A&M by 5, but they scored over 50 points. My point, these guys can compete with the big boys by spreading the ball and keeping defenses guessing. And then, here is our Warriors. Averaging less than 15 points per game against FBS competition. It's pretty sad and I think we're going backward, but the 2 most obvious is we need a playmaker and a better offensive line to open the holes and pass protection. Feel sorry for the defense. DL is decimated.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:30 am
Liked the performance of Clark Evans. Nice, big target. Hope he continues to be productive.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:35 am
Actually, I was both.
Were you in Colorado?
November 18th, 2012 at 9:36 am
Looking ahead to next season, this is my best guess of the breakdown:
Home games:
USC (8/29)
Army (11/30)
BYU (12/7)
Colorado State
Fresno State
Air Force
San Jose State (could be switched with Utah State)
Road games:
Oregon State (9/7)
Navy (11/9)
Nevada
New Mexico
UNLV
Utah State
My guess is that UH would visit the schools that came to Aloha Stadium this season and have home games against the teams that UH played at this season. SJSU and Utah State would replace SDSU and Boise State in the MWC schedule slots--to me it would make sense for SJSU to replace SDSU and Utah State to replace Boise State so schools get the same number of visits to California as expected.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:36 am
Whatever offense UH runs, it isn't going to work if the offensive line doesn't do its job. Air Force's defensive line was having its way with the much larger UH offensive line.
Thought that Stanford's defense played a heck of a game in shutting down Oregon's high octane offense yesterday. Only a matter of time until defensive coordinators figure out a way to stop whenever new offense is popular.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:36 am
Letsgo:
You make good points, but you should speak for yourself. Your opinions are valued; not so much when you try to add what you think other people's opinions are.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:38 am
I was I the 2nd row behind the bench.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:39 am
Anyway, it was obvious what UH was going to do on first down. (Note my post at the top.)
And Higgins has difficulty with the long ball, so it's not good to put him in third-and-long situations.
So it has to be a combination of completing first-down passes, running better and blocking better. I think they missed Gregory because he was a perimeter threat. UH lacked one against Air Force.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:39 am
Garret,
Wouldn't Wyoming be on the schedule since we didn't play them this year? Not sure how that rotation works.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:40 am
Maybe its about time the AD starts evaluating Chows performance. He is certainly not coaching like a first teamer. More like a walk on that should be told he is just not good enough. UH use to run ads with Chow saying we are going to be chasing championships. Well with his terrible play calling and stubborness and not being able to adapt, thats all it will be, a chase
November 18th, 2012 at 9:41 am
You're in the Air Force?
I didn't know that.
I appreciate your contributions to our country.
I hope you weren't jumping up and down cheering for the Falcons, because that's all they were doing behind the bench.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:41 am
also, add to that wat players who didn't make the trip were posting in social media....well I guess I'll just leave it alone. I stated my opinions, I'm out
November 18th, 2012 at 9:42 am
no I drove 2 hours to sit in the cold and support the team.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:43 am
letsgo:
It was cold. It was in the 20s.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:44 am
kev1 were not scheduled to play Wyoming until 2014. but that might change w realignment
November 18th, 2012 at 9:45 am
kev-1,
The MWC has their schedule rotation set up so that teams play home-and-home series and every team misses 1 other team for 2 years.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:46 am
73 . . . oh, OK. thanks.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:49 am
fricken JETS!
November 18th, 2012 at 9:50 am
Am I the only viewer to see that Higgins throws a football that floats? His delivery and follow through resembles my 10 yr old daughter throwing a bean bag. Why is there no zip to his passes, is he partially paralyzed in the arm or hand? Come on Norm Chow, how can you describe this kid as QB, considering you have seen the best in the college world in your years as a coordinator?
November 18th, 2012 at 9:51 am
I must say that Air Force has some of the best student fans.
They're in the stands right behind the visiting bench, and they stand and chant the entire game.
The worst thing they dod is count down, then yell: I ... think ... we're ... gonna ... win."
There's even a guy in a tank top who leads the cheers. Very organized. Very distracting if you're a visiting team. Sort of like having 3,000 Alan Hackbarths behind you.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:53 am
33 Old School: Manti is very classy, but now we are talking about a multi million dollar contract and choosing an employer. It's a business decision that will affect his career. Plus his parents will probably have a say.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:54 am
Kimo:
I did note that Higgins had problems with passes floating.
Then everybody said just because I attend practices, it doesn't mean I'm telling the truth.
But I like Higgins. And, you know what, I'm giving him a pass because the problems with the running game put him in bad situations. Plus, it was freakin' cold. And it was in altitude. So there were a lot of factors that weren't considered normal.
I think he deserves another shot.
Or not.
I don't really have an opinion either way. I just want close games to write about.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:56 am
I've only meant Manti once — at Aloha Stadium when Notre Dame was preparing for the Hawaii Bowl.
It also was the first day I met David Graves, who was walking around the stadium with his father.
Things you see when you show up at the wrong time.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:59 am
1 Hackbarth > 3000 wannabe Hackbarths
50 Helens agree...
November 18th, 2012 at 10:00 am
100 times?
Lonely old sports fans are pathetic.
November 18th, 2012 at 10:00 am
34. Kev-1: NC's inconsistency is what is frustrating. When SS is ineffective, he blames the team. But with Higgins it's on him? Just can't follow his decision making criteria.
November 18th, 2012 at 10:07 am
#84 +1 . . . my point exactly. Now, I'm not of the Chow's a joke perspective, but stuff like that I don't understand.
November 18th, 2012 at 10:10 am
UNLV coming to town. Their head coach Bobby Hauck may be on thin ice altough he signed a contract extension that goes to 2012. UNLV AD has been telling fans to "be patient."
Hauck's record:
2010 - 2-11
2011 - 2-10
2012- 2-10
I wonder how hard it is to recruit at UNLV? The players must eat well - prime rib dinners for $9 (someone told me).
November 18th, 2012 at 10:11 am
Sorry: Hauck's contract extension, which he signed last year, goes through 2014.
November 18th, 2012 at 10:13 am
ST- the last paragraph of your post basically sums up the season for me. The playcalling is horrible.
November 18th, 2012 at 10:16 am
Would like to see Cayman start. He's got the tools...arm strength and mobility. He seems very poised as well.
November 18th, 2012 at 10:16 am
The quick hook was predictable. Just like Chow's offense.
November 18th, 2012 at 10:16 am
#49 Another assumption:
"#38 Bryson. I agree, chow is a joke. the team was not happy when Higgins was pulled."
November 18th, 2012 at 10:21 am
Actually, Chow issued the same support for Higgins as he did for Schroeder in today's story. He said it's never only the quarterback's fault.
At this point, though, I'd like to see Shutter get some time, too.
Why not? Now's the time to play everybody.
November 18th, 2012 at 10:24 am
wowlaulau:
I tried to shoot video of the Air Force fans jumping up and down, but I was wearing gloves, so I had difficulty maneuvering the iPhone.
That's why I was hoping that someone who was supposed to be in that section could offer some perspective of what that was like.
When I was a UH student, we used to stand for an entire game. Those were the days ...
November 18th, 2012 at 10:43 am
#62 you left out wyoming. its kind of hard to figure out how the mwc is doing the rotation of playing only 8 of the 9 teams in conference.
November 18th, 2012 at 10:47 am
While we complain about whether the QB should have been pulled or not we witnessed another boring and woeful performance against a physically inferior opponent. This is about our o-line out weighing Air Force's d-line by 50 or more pounds and still unable to do the job. This is about losing with more talent. This is about doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. This team is not giving up, this team is not so lacking in talent that we may not win another game. It's not about that we are losing, it's about how we are losing. Those are excuses the fans are not buying. This team's woes won't be solved by looking at more tape. This team's woes can only be solved by changing the person who is looking at the tape.
November 18th, 2012 at 10:53 am
#79 yeah his parents will have a say, much the same as when he signed his loi, and when he decided to go on a mission. i don't know manti, but i can't imagine a defensive player saying no to a team.
November 18th, 2012 at 10:58 am
ST #51 ~ I was surprised to see Spam posting nat #1 before you closed the Comments yesterday.
It would be better for Chow not to announce the starting QB in order to reduce preparedness on the part of the opposing team.
Perfect practice makes perfect. GO WARRIORS!!!
November 18th, 2012 at 11:01 am
Funny example I was told by an Asian parent on the expectations we have.
(NO OFFENSE INTENDED).
Child comes home with his report card:
American Father: "Hmm... you got a B- for science. Well, there's still room for improvement, but good job and effort!"
Asian Father: "You got a B- for science??? You have disgraced our family name and are no longer my son. Now you must kill yourself!!"
November 18th, 2012 at 11:08 am
ST #80,
"Then everybody said just because I attend practices, it doesn't mean I'm telling the truth."
I don't think people were talking about you? I hope you didn't misread my comment from a couple days ago about other bloggers claiming to go to practice not telling the truth...
#8,
I know I was one of those guys refreshing the page at work yesterday... Haha... Eh there's only so much one can do sitting in an office on a saturday without refreshing Warrior Beat 10s of times... LoL
November 18th, 2012 at 11:14 am
Can we get rid of Chows contract?? Since we seem to be heading nowhere. Another Von Appen era in the making
November 18th, 2012 at 11:17 am
ST,
Of the players who are also parents, how many are locals? Does it seem like that factors into their decision to stay and play here?
November 18th, 2012 at 11:23 am
Matty Boy:
It's a five-year contract, at $550,000 per.
You may buy it out, if you wish.
November 18th, 2012 at 11:25 am
Thanks for the good writeup. It if truth be told was a entertainment account it. Glance complex to far delivered agreeable from you! However, how can we keep up a correspondence?
November 18th, 2012 at 11:29 am
Dang. I wish I had that kind of money..
November 18th, 2012 at 11:29 am
It can be good to be super rich sometimes lol
November 18th, 2012 at 11:43 am
Some Utah fans are calling for Kyle Whittingham to be replaced after the Utes lost to Arizona yesterday, knocking them out of bowl contention (5-6 with one more game remaining). The same fans want Utah to hire Gary Anderson at Utah State. Perhaps the reason they aren't winning as much is the competition since jumping to the Pac-10 as opposed to MWC competition week in, week out?
November 18th, 2012 at 11:43 am
I think (hope Chow sees it too) it's time that Cayman gets his shot. I don't think Higgins is the answer either and although SS may be a good practice QB, we all the know the results when under the lights.
We need to finish strong this season to build up for next season.
November 18th, 2012 at 11:45 am
$550K times 4. That would be more than Greenwood's proposed buyout.
November 18th, 2012 at 11:58 am
UNLV will get better. They are much improved and more competitive as their scores attest. I think the Rebels will beat us by about 10 points. I believe their Head Coach is very good and has been a winner at Montana.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:00 pm
I'm looking forward to the last 2 home games. It's a LONG offseason. Coach Chow should go back and review the tape of the Utah game in the Sun Bowl last season. Lots of play-action and misdirection led to the Utes win. I honestly thought we were getting an offensive genius, and it really got me excited for our future. Now... not so much. But, i'm always there to support our players. GO WARRIORS!!!
November 18th, 2012 at 12:01 pm
Buying out Chow's contract is not beyond reason. Just not after one year. If we struggle again next year, calls for his departure will ring twice as loud as this year. There is no way UH could afford having football -- the main financial engine of the university's athletic department -- bleed red ink for 5 years. That would be the "near-death" penalty.
BIK
November 18th, 2012 at 12:01 pm
Unfortunately, UNLV has our number for some reason lately. I'm just hoping to witness a competitive game.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:02 pm
96 gobows: You might be right but how could PC and MT look each other in the eyes, have respect for and work with each other. Oh well, they will cross the bridge if they ever get to it. PC lost even more credibility when MT's dad came out on national tv with it.

The key to winning our last 2 games...give Cayman his shot or put Graves in there. Higgins is not the answer and SS does not have the "IT" factor that Chow mentioned at the start of the season. Cayman is the most talented of the 3 QB's we have and Graves is the most mobile. Give Cayman his shot. Or put Graves in there to be a run first and pass second QB with our porous O line. We need a QB that can make plays or run for his life. With either these guys starting, we will win out.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:14 pm
Agree, Azwarrior22. Need to pull out all of the stops. Maybe even have Mike Edwards pull some duty on offense.
Gotta give props to the D-line players who are pulling some ironman duty - MVPs in my book.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:28 pm
I thought the defense played much better than they had been. It might have been a different season without so many injuries on the line. That being said, the AFA was able to score enough to win without opening their playbook past the first chapter. When you can win a game running the ball on every down that is it's own statement.
I am sure that Chow feels very frustrated with the offense. Higgins seemed pretty accurate, but his passes were not exactly bullets. AFA should have had a pick six on the one he lofted across the field. He was fairly mobile, but the offense was not able to move the ball with any consistency. A TD pass to a TE is something that has been sorely missing this year!
SS, on the other hand, was not accurate at all. Both of those QBs lack some breadth to their game and once an opponent makes some adjustments and learns to not worry about the things that the QBs can't do the offense sputters. Clearly we are not a good enough offensive team to move the ball without really spreading the defense out.
I obviously don't know if Cayman can do any better -- because none of us know. Higgins got a fair shake and he played better than SS has been. He did not, however, play well enough to help the team win the game. One TD is not going to win many games. Worse than that is that the offense stayed well out of field goal range as well.
On another note, there are a bunch of stunned Duck fans up here in Oregon today. That was one heck of a defensive display by Stanford. With Mariota, Hogan, and Hundley all being redshirt freshman the PAC-12 looks to be very competitive for the next few years.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:36 pm
Expat,
Chow should feel frustrated with his offense..his play calling sucks! He's so obviously predictable.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:59 pm
Nice job by the defense. Especially that fourth down stop. Put the fear into them . Offense was weak, zzzzz play calling. Agree with Bryson that the dives were a dive. JI's fumbles really hurt. Moral of the story, WG's ejection probably lost us this game.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:59 pm
We get chance beat Vegas,
Improvement - we beat the spread.
Most consistnt statement after every loss - " gotta look at the film."
In my opinion, Chow is the hardest working coach we've had, No way to prove it but I believe he's put in more hours on a weekly basis than his predecessors.
Strong point and a flaw - loyalty. Loyal to his coaches and QB. He should grade his coaches on their performace to date, come up with a report card, note their good points and areas that need improvement. Mack took the low key approach in this regard. Promoted Aranda and Rolo.
Reassigned R. Lee and Brian Smith. Brought in a veteran OL coach who could work with what he had.
November 18th, 2012 at 1:03 pm
If Chow has a bad season next year, before we think to buy out Chow... we need to look at the process and people that brought him here. Figure out why the decision was made, what was the criteria and revamp THAT, and maybe the decision makers, to ensure that a better selection is made.

Buyouts can be costly even to a "big time" athletic department:
"Fired Tennessee head football coach Derek Dooley had four years left on his contract, which includes a $5 million buyout.
Tennessee faces some financial issues as it chooses its new coach. The university’s athletic department posted a $3.98 million budget deficit for the 2011-12 fiscal year in part because of buyouts it was paying to Fulmer, former athletic director Mike Hamilton, former men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl and former baseball coach Todd Raleigh."

Coach Cavanaugh would be a nice but I'll still believe on giving the
O-line time to jell and adjust regardless on who's coaching the O-line.
Freshmen, soph, jc O-line plus throw in tight end in mix with very
minimum experienced, that's a lot to ask.
Go Warriors!

Lucky for UH and Chow.....and the rest of the State.....that Mack's 2010 team had a successful 10-3 regular season record.....with a Hawaii Bowl post-season bowl appearance.....to get UH the invite in Dec. 2010 to join the MWC in football.
Otherwise, the reality is.....that UH would be in the same situation as Idaho and New Mexico State is in now.....WAC teams that will be left without any conference affiliation for next season (after the WAC goes defunct after this season).....and now both considering both considering going back to FCS status. It would be like deja vu 1998 for UH.
With Utah State and San Jose State football programs both on the upswing this season both already with 9-win seasons and vying for the WAC Title, the MWC would unquestionably still take both of them.
However as bad as Idaho is this season, the Vandals still beat an FBS program (New Mexico State) and are definitely a better geographical fit for the MWC than UH. In retrospect, the MWC probably would take Idaho instead of UH if the decision were made this year.
JMHO but that's what we have to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.....that UH is at least in a viable football conference.....even though not competitive this season.

Pretty good guess that former Iolani star (and Bruin starting NG) Seali'i Epenesa is glad he stuck it out at UCLA after being buried in the depth chart the past 2 years, while also a pretty good guess that Iuta Tepa now wishes that he should've stuck it out at UCLA for this season instead of transfer to UH.
How ironic that 2 former Warrior players (Adrian Klemm & Jeff Ulbrich) are now part of the new UCLA coaching staff.....to enjoy the quick Bruin turnaround success.....while UH has 4 former coaches from the previous UCLA coaching staff (that obviously failed to get the job done there at Westwood under Rick Neuheisel).
It must feel like deva ju all over again for Klemm & Ulbrich.....comparing back from UH's 1998 winless season to the 1999 turnaround season under JJ. BTW, Bruins have more former Warrior players (2) as coaches then UH does currently has (1 - Tony Tuioti). JMHO that that's part of the reason why Coach needs to officially hire Ashley Lelie as the WR coach.

#136,
The fact is.....that the young OL hasn't improved since the beginning of this season....under this OL coach. While injuries partially causing the rotating starting OL line-up each game don't help, the young OL still isn't developing in blocking technique nor their blocking assignments.
In addition to injuries, the unwanted loss in weight and corresponding strength from the beginning of the season sure isn't helping.
Not the OL players' fault. They need better OL coaching and instruction.
November 18th, 2012 at 2:38 pm
#130,
With Dooley now out at Tennessee, maybe UH still has a shot at landing Crusader ILB Colton Goeas (Leo's son) and OG Reeve Koehler. Goeas was an early Vol commit, while Koehler was seriously considering the Vols too.

I was A JJ, then Mac suppporter, and now, given the realities of the 5 year deal in conjunction with our financial condition, i think we have gone "All In" with NC. The way I see it, he seems to be struggling with head coaching decisions, but I hope he is learning and adapting. He said he wants to adapt things to suit the level of talent we are getting (ala Air Force). We'll see I guess. We sure don't want to be the next Boarders or Blockbuster expecting 7 yards on a first down dive play out of the pro set. Come on Coach. You can do it! Go Warriors!

Wow, the Steelers look like convicts. With Dooley getting his pink slip, Mike Leach is not far behind. If we have a 2-11 season next year Chow is not going to see the Michigan game in 2016. He'll be gone after 2 years. The reason will be not only the win-loss record, but because he will have lost the fans. Just look at the attendance. Our team is not exciting. Pro set offense doesn't work in college. We don't have the 4-5 star type players.
November 18th, 2012 at 3:26 pm

The way I view it is this is the transition year.
Next year, competitive games.
Third year is the payoff year.
Now if they continue to get blown out next year and are sub-500 in 2014, then I don't think Chow will stay around after that.
He has a five-year contract but his timetable is to turn this around by the third year. He's too prideful to stick around if he were to have three bad years.

BINGO, the same character's who took control of the football coach selection are still there. The Stevie Wonder fiasco is peanuts when compared to the millions the program will lose over a two year drought. While they were able to focus everyone's attention on blaming the Governor, the legislature, Jim Donovan, Rich Sheriff and the like for their mistakes they are no less equipped to make the next decision a good one.

ST: I would agree with your assessment of Chow's timetable for turning around the program. That sounds about right.
Regarding a cost cutting measure, would it be feasible to close the upper levels of the stadium for UH games until they start winning again and the casual fans return? Less people to hire = less $$ overhead costs = savings $$ for UH. Just wondering.
November 18th, 2012 at 4:17 pm

November 18th, 2012 at 4:27 pm
ST, I would agree with your spring QB depth chart except to flip-flop Higgins and Shutter. You gotta give the nob to the Punahou man. Plus Lakalaka is in the mix at runnin g back, so it would be neat to have an all-Punahou backfield.
November 18th, 2012 at 4:27 pm

November 18th, 2012 at 4:32 pm
#161,
According to assistant coaches (Demo, Rauscher, Wiesehan), more new players are needed in order to become competitive next 2013 season....which means that about 10 current non-senior scholie Warrior players won't be back after this season....to make room for more available scholarships for the next 2013 Recruiting Class....to make up for such a small scholie senior class this season.
Call it whatever (medical retirements, personal reasons, etc.), but the same weeding out process was applied and executed before this 2012 season.....to free up 5 more scholarships (Legay, Leslie, Lolotai, Olds, Spain). Same thing happened under JJ and Mack, but process not applied and executed in quite the same manner as now.

please dont say we are giving this guy (chow) 3 years! i wouldnt give him 3 more games. he has proven to be a terrible choice for head coach. who the hell would come to the conclusion that he is going to get better?
this offense is out dated and has a proven track record to not work at mid-majors. wagner knew this and ran triple option type. JJ knew this and ran the run and shoot.
chow will not get 4-5 star boys. in fact, i would bet he gets very few 3 star guys. time to cut your loses UH and cut chow.

November 18th, 2012 at 5:35 pm
Chow is a smart guy and is finally getting a good UH education. It's a young team and they should have a winning season next season. We can't afford to fire Chow now and he deserves two years to get his act together. It's not a path I would have voted for but that is the path we are on.
November 18th, 2012 at 5:40 pm
Coach needs to look at his assistants again... can't play favorites.. he needs to shore up where he needs help... strengthen his areas of weakness and replace coaches or move them around. I thought Tommy Lee was the QB and RB coach.. but according to the Jordan Wynn article, Chow was coaching QBs... IF the WRs are still running the wrong routes.. is that Ashley department?

#177 -- interesting according to Tsai post last couple of days the only way to lose a scholarship was academic, legal or quitting. From what you are saying that is not the case. So a kid commits to UH out of high school, coaches don't like what they got and bye bye young man >> you lose >> UH wants money and you are standing in the way.
This revelation is not going to help recruiting. What lousy treatment for players -- 5 kids bounced to make room -- for what? this season? and the magical charm of NC? I thought Olds was one of top prospects for OL.

By him approaching Jordan Wynn, Coach obviously already starting the evaluation process for O assistants.
Can't fault Ashley....'cuz he's not the WR coach.....Coach and Tommy are.
Uperesa coaches the RB.
November 18th, 2012 at 6:19 pm
Kapakahi,
Mahalo for the clarification... serious changes need to take place.. Chow will have to delegate more and build his offense around what he and his assistants agree upon.
November 18th, 2012 at 6:24 pm
#177,
Every NCAA rule is subject to interpretation by the Coaching staff.....and enforcement by the UH Compliance Office.
SO....if no objections from the UH Compliance Office, then Coach can do what he wants to do.....as he subjectively interpets.
Olds had and still has legit personal issues, while Leslie had legit medical issues. Olds just quit the Santa Ana JC College team before the end of the season. SO....Coach gets a pass on both Olds & Leslie.
November 18th, 2012 at 6:27 pm
agree upon in terms of what they know with certainty (routes/techniques/etc) and can achieve in training.... Got to make sure that the assistants are teaching the right stuff at the right time... left hand needs to know what the right hand is doing and vice-versa.

Just repeating it here.
November 18th, 2012 at 7:39 pm
Get chance against Vegas.
Does Chow deserve more time? In my opinion ...yes. I'm disappointed with the product but understand the challenges of demolishing what existed and building something new in it's place.
I'm looking at this year as a year for site prep and foundation laying. Next year and the following years Chow will have something to build on.
People should redirect their animosity for Chow to the Powers That Be that hired him. I sure they asked basic questions - What's your vision for the program? How do you plan to fullfill that vision? How much time do you need? Will you retain any of the present coaches?
Apparently they liked the answers Chow gave. They're the ones that hired him.
November 18th, 2012 at 7:49 pm
No animosity or anger....just in a sharing mood.

Keys to Victory checklist:
1. Run the ball vs bad AF run D -- no
2. Win the turnover battle -- yes
3. Make a few defensive stops -- yes
UH actually played it's best defensive game all year. Red zone D wasn't good, but they didn't allow many trips to red zone so that was refreshing. UH stopped Air Force on 9 of 12 drives, so that was very good considering how they've looked vs 2 other option teams. I guess Kuymeyer should be credited for making some adjustments. The main adjustment I saw was the UH employed a 3-3-5 look on defense. That works two fold: 1. It puts more speed on the field to handle the option; 2. It may have been out of necessity with how thin UH is at DLine.
The big play that really hurt UH in this game was the Iosefa fumble. AF was leading 14-7 at the time, and UH had just forced a turnover on special teams and re-gained momentum deep in AF territory. Chow dialed up the perfect play call, a screen to Iosefa, and caught AF on a blitz. Iosefa had a clear shot to the end zone, but his own blocker brushed by and knocked the ball out of Iosefa's hands and UH loses possession and suffers a major hit to morale.
Iosefa has been fumble prone in his 2 years at UH and it's all in how he carries the ball. When running, he swings the ball with this arm and it's away from his body. When nearing contact, he doesn't wrap up with two hands, but rather tries to fight for more yards. That's fine, but he leaves the ball vulnerable to backside tacklers. Most of his fumbles occur when fighting for YAC. The costly fumble on Saturday was inexcusable...
What was shocking in the game was how poorly the Oline played. Air Force was ranked #109 in run defense and the line could not create any holes vs an undersized defense. That was shocking. Add in the pass protection issues and the offense went nowhere.
The QB situation was strange to watch... Higgins played ok. I didn't see the need to pull him unless Higgins was hurting. Schroeder came off the bench and statistically was bad, but by the time SS came in, AF knew UH was forced to pass the ball, so Air Force pinned it's ears back on the pass rush, which made life tough for SS.
I've said it before and I'll say it again... I'm not concerned over QB play this year. Doesn't matter if SS or Higgins plays. None will be starting next year. I'm more concerned about the OLine and if they can improve for next year. If the OLine can't protect the QB, even Pro-Bowl caliber QBs will struggle (See Phil Rivers, Mike Vick).
After watching Higgins attempt a few outside passes and one deep ball... I'd never thought I'd see a D1 QB with a weaker arm than Schroeder, guess I was wrong.... Which makes me wonder... How bad were Shutter and Graves during fall camp and during the season to fall behind two walk-ons with no arms??? I know Shutter's been in the dog house with his legal issues, but Graves situation is baffling. If you're a good QB, you can play in any system.

Olds never quit -- his scholarship was pulled by NC in January -- personal reasons sounds like bs to make up for lack of depth on OL. Don't know how much you know about Legay but not too comfortable with the story I heard. When you consider 4 players on the current roster with scholarships are in and out of court dealing with DUI issues --- what is reality -- NC has no rules except those that benefit him and the UH administration just looks the other way.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:27 pm
RE: Graves.
After seeing two different starters at QB I'm convinced that Graves would have given us the best chance to win. The offense would be more effective with an athletic QB given the state of our OLine.
Having said that I can see why Chow chose to eliminate Graves from the QB competition. To win with Graves he would've had to alter the offense to a pistol or spread option type offense to take advantage of Graves' atheticism. He must have felt altering his offense to fit Graves would have set back his time table in installing his system. Must have felt he could "coach up" the QBs that better fit his system
This is just an opinion, of course.
Something that just popped into my head that's not very well thought out....if Chow got the job at Ohio State, Braxton Miller would be playing RB and Taylor Graham the starting QB. If Chow got the job at Michigan two years ago, Denard would be a WR and Tate Forcier would be the QB.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:27 pm
Legay and Leslie still count against scholarship limit, so there was no benefit gained.
Lolotai's wife moved to Colorado. And he already earned a degree.
I feel bad for Spain although he was damaged when he arrived. Nice guy.
In review, I like Legay (my brother says he's a great writer), Leslie (very nice guy), Lolotai (sharp guy) and Spain (very polite).
No comment on Olds. Now it's my turn to be polite.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:34 pm
Never even heard of Olds, so no matter to me. It's just the nature of the business of college football. Yes, as much as it isn't supposed to be one, it is. Especially with a coaching change. No need cry about that kind stuff. Happens with every coach.
I'm more concerned with decisions that affect current players on the roster.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:34 pm
Correction -- Olds was kicked off the team in January -- was not allowed to practice with team -- he did not re-register for fall when NC pulled his scholarship. Did not have legal or grade problems that I have heard about. NC didn't like him or whatever(personal problems....?).
November 18th, 2012 at 8:34 pm
btw . . . I hope I'm not part of ST's 10%.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:40 pm
ST . . . you seem to rate high enough to get your own thread on another board. So silly how some people are. Although we at times have different opinions, I do appreciate your perspective and the fact that you share so much intel with this blog. I'm not sure if people realize just how much we would NOT know about the team if you didn't post it.

#203.. Chow's going to get time. UH will be patient with him since he's only getting paid $550,000/yr. UH is getting a bargain on Chow. With UH's financial situation, they will ride Chow for a while.
Anybody else notice San Jose St beat BYU on Saturday to go (9-2)... I actually watched a good portion of the game and SJSU actually manhandled BYU for much of the game. BTW, SJSU coach, Mike MacIntyre, is in his 3rd year and went 1-12 his 1st season (2010). And everybody knows SJSU has never had a good FB program and MacIntyre has turned it around in his 3rd year.
Excerpt from wiki profile:
--Local media considered MacIntyre to be a smart hire despite his inexperience as a head coach...He also planned on dropping the spread offense and expand recruiting rather than rely on junior college transfers. San Jose State completed the 2010 season 1–12. However, MacIntyre expressed optimism that the team would improve in 2011 given that the team would have 85 athletes on scholarship next season.... In 2011, the Spartans finished 5–7. Unlike the previous season in which MacIntyre had only six weeks of recruiting time, MacIntyre had a full term of recruiting. The coach also commented shortly before the first game of 2011 that his players benefited by learning his playbook throughout 2010 despite the one-win season. --
Boy, doesn't this sound familiar?? Chow changed from spread to a balanced style. Chow has expanded recruiting (Mack relied on transfers) and will get his 1st full recruiting cycle. Chow is having a rough 1st year, but all his underclassmen are getting experience and I can guarantee Chow hasn't had enough practice time to implement the full playbook.
The blue print is out there... McIntyre (SJSU), Sunny Dykes (LaTech), Gary Anderson (UtahSt), June Jones (UH & SMU), Darrell Hazell (Kent St), Todd Berry (La-Monroe) all took mediocre/awful mid-majors and turned them around in about 3 years on average. Every one (except JJ in 1999) had losing records their 1st year (McIntyre went 1-12 at SJSU and JJ went 1-11 at SMU). Everyone has been able to improve prep recruiting and don't rely on transfers. Transfers can fill a hole, but you can't build a program around them.
Of the big programs that have made a comeback recently... Bill Snyder (2nd stint with KansasSt) and Steve Sarkesian (Wash) have turned their programs back into winners again. Sark inherited a 0-12 team and now will be going to a 3rd straight bowl game. Shoot, even Nick Saban struggled badly during his 1st year at Alabama before turning them into contenders.
The combined 1st year records for all the mid-major coaches mentioned = (30-56) *counts JJ's '99&'08 years
The combined YTD 2012 records for all the mid-major coaches mentioned = (49-17)
I'm in no way guaranteeing Chow will have UH back to a 8 or 9 win season in 3 years, but the foundation is being laid and Chow's taking the same steps the aforementioned coaches have done to rebuild their programs.

#209.... I swear I heard Denard Robinson started at RB on Saturday. and had over 120+ all purpose yards.
The struggles the 2012 Oline can be summed up like this... The 5 starters vs Air Force had a combined 7 starts in Division 1 football prior to 2012. The 5 starters who started vs USC (Game 1 of 2012) only had 9 combined starts (Sai and Shigematsu are hurt).
I don't care if you have all 4-5 star recruits, that much inexperience will lead to a very inconsistent year. UH doesn't have that level of talent, so the inexperience hurts UH even more.
The silver lining is that all 5 will be back and will have all sorts of film to point out mistakes and learn from them. Hopefully Chow lands a few OL recruits that are improvements and can make an immediate impact.
November 18th, 2012 at 9:58 pm
Of the 125 D1 football teams, I rank Hawaii No. 125. I can't think of another team that has a worse losing record as Hawaii has this season. Good strategy. Any improvement over this season will look good.

#192, 198, 208 & 212,
YES....Olds got dismissed from the team by Coach for legit and repeated disciplinary problems....although none involving legal issues. Grades were also becoming an issue because of legit personal issues.....not BS. The fact that Olds recently quit the Santa Ana JC College team before the end of this season is probably a good indication....that he wasn't going make it at UH anyway....whether Coach dismissed him or not. Like ST said, nuff said about Olds.
"These are the facts of the case. And they are undisputed."
Already shared only some of facts that I "know" regarding Levi's situation (see #198)....as probably does ST. Could've definitely been handled better by Coach.
While Levi didn't adjust well to the current "old school" coaching methods, just saying that.....still might've been somewhat beneficial.....to have some senior leadership on the OL.....from a former part-time starting OL.....instead of none.....like it is now. Just saying that.....it couldn't have hurt. That's for sure!
November 18th, 2012 at 10:54 pm
#219,
Hope it's true too....'cuz it's definitely a high priority recruiting need position for Warriors.
Gotta hope that the SAT scores are good too!.....to avoid following in the in footsteps of 2 former OIA Red West Defensive POYs (from the same school) that never made it past JC.
Local HS recruiting effort by Warrior staff definitely isn't one of the current problems....that it was in the past.

If you are going to win with a low scoring offense-- ball control, smash mouth, play action, proset, then you need a great, super defense. The proset has become too easy to defend and that is why spread offenses are replacing the proset at so many schools. SEC has moor than half its teams running the spread. Two SEC teams have now won recent national championships with the spread-- Auburn and Florida. Texas A&M with the crazy Houston spread beat Alabama and is averaging 545 yards and 40 points per game in the SEC. Baylor with a weak defense but high powered spread passing attack just beat the No. 1 team Kansa State and its Heisman candidate QB 52-24. We see what Nevada and San Jose do with the pistol and option, Utah State and its spread, Frsno and its spread.

Hmmm ... do we have the talent? If not, did it disappear overnight? If we have talent, then its on the coaches to get them ready to win, not just play. Love to really understand what is going on with the team's locker room dynamics this year. Seems uncharacteristic.

I have noticed that car insurance corporations know the cars which are at risk of accidents along with risks. Additionally , they know what type of cars are prone to higher risk as well as higher risk they've got the higher the particular premium amount. Understanding the very simple basics of car insurance can help you choose the right types of insurance policy that could take care of your needs in case you get involved in an accident. Thanks for sharing the ideas with your blog.

#228 -- not too sure where your "undisputed facts" are coming from BUT Olds NEVER quit team at Santa Ana City College and in fact played both ways as a offensive guard and nose guard/defensive tackle. It is very unusual for a player to go both ways at a Juco. and Santa Ana finished season 8-3 ranked in top 10 in state of California.
In short, your "source" of "undisputed facts" is full of BS. Personal reasons????
Tsai -- you had said earlier that the only way to lose a scholarship was legal, quit or grades -- never mentioned personal reasons.... I wonder how much that term will be used related to the players that won't get their scholarships renewed? Polite maybe means to NC.

#240,
Like I said before.....no BS here.
Got all this over the weekend from an OC buddy of mine.....who's a mutual friend of the Olds' family.....and who's also a close friend of Geoff Jones (Santa Ana JC College Head Coach).
Olds started the season at OG but switched mid-season to DT. YES.....Olds did end up quitting the Santa Ana football team. That's a fact. You can verify with Geoff Jones yourself.
Personal reasons are just that.....personal.....and aren't gonna be shared here.....out of respect to Olds.
Take it or leave it.....BUT whether you believe me or not, "These are the facts of the case."
November 19th, 2012 at 6:04 am
#240 & 241,
UPDATE. Just talked to my OC buddy. Olds did quit the team....but asked Jones for another chance and was re-instated.
STILL...the personal reasons were a real and contributing factor to Coach dismissing Olds from the team. That's still a fact.
