Volleyball Warriors get setter
By Stephen Tsai
The paperwork has been finalized, and setter Jennings Franciskovic of Oaks Christian High will be joining the volleyball Warriors next year, coach Charlie Wade has confirmed.
Franciskovic is 6 feet, but can touch at least 11-3.
"He's clearly one of the top setters in the class," Wade said. "He's an absolute volleyball nut. He's into it. He's one of those volleyball gym rats who just loves to play. He loves to watch film. He's a really good student. He's a nice athlete. He's played a lot of basketball. He's done a lot of stuff athletically."
Franciskovich has been involved with the USA Volleyball program.
Max Wechsung, a 6-6 transfer from Long Beach City College, and Joby Ramos, a 2010 Roosevelt High graduate who played the past two seasons at Pacific, enter as the top two setters for the 2013 Warriors. Last season's top setter, Sam Biscaro is a UH student but appears to be on a volleyball hiatus.
Wade said Franciskovich fills a need at setter for this recruiting class.
"Jennings will come in next year as a freshman and he'll battle those two guys," Wade said.

Here's the new volleyball jersey:

Finals are over, but the work continues for former UH defensive end/linebacker Paipai Falemalu.
Falemalu recently reached an agreement with ARN Sports & Entertainment, a sports agency based in North Carolina. Brian Anderson will be Falemalu's agent.
Falemalu will train in Hawaii under Chad Ikei.
"Don't want to train anywhere else," Falemalu said.
He has been told he projects as an outside linebacker or rush end. That means adding a few pounds to get to about 245 pounds.

Farewell to the multi-talented Ryan Hall:

Congrats to Saint Louis offensive lineman Reeve Koehler on his selection to the U.S. Army All-American Game in San Antonio.

It's down to California, Kansas and Hawaii for Koehler.

Aloha Jennings! Here's a release from his school.
OCS’ JENNINGS FRANCISKOVIC SIGNS WITH UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII
Division I Men's Volleyball program selects nationally ranked player from Oaks Christian School
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, California---Jennings Franciskovic, a 6’5” senior setter/outside hitter at Oaks Christian School, has signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball for the University of Hawaii.
Named by Volleyball Magazine as one of the “Top 30 Underclassmen to Watch” in July 2012,
Franciskovic is a team captain and four-year starter for Oaks Christian School Boys Varsity Volleyball team and earned First Team All-Tri-Valley honors in 2011 and 2012. A nationally recognized athlete and participant in USA Volleyball's top level programs since 9th grade, he is a member of the 2012 USA Volleyball Youth National Training Team. For the third year in a row, Franciskovic is an invitee to the USA Volleyball's elite Boys National Holiday High Performance Camp held next month in San Diego. For the past five years, he has played for Pacific Palisades Volleyball Club (PPVC) and is currently the starting setter and team captain of the highly ranked Pali18Nike team coached by Matthew Diaz. Franciskovic was selected by the Daily News to its 2012 All-Area Boys Volleyball First Team and by the Ventura County Star to its 2012 First Team All-Ventura County Boys Volleyball Team.
“Jennings’ athleticism, dedication, hard work, and team leadership has indelibly strengthened our volleyball program,” said Oaks Christian’s Athletic Director Jan Hethcock. “He is a remarkable young man with a skill set that will allow him to make an immediate impact at the college level.” Oaks Christian Head Boys Volleyball Coach Chris Forrest was present when Franciskovic signed to play for Hawaii. “Jennings is a standout setter, with a high volleyball IQ, who excels at every position,” said Coach Forrest. “He has built a national reputation as an all-around player who can set, block and hit with our nation’s top prep athletes. Having worked with Jennings for the past five years through PPVC and now at Oaks Christian, I feel he is a student-athlete of great character and a remarkable player to coach.” An honors student, Franciskovic will study business at Hawaii.
December 12th, 2012 at 8:42 am
sorry, kinda long, shoulda just put da link.
December 12th, 2012 at 8:46 am
Fun Fact:
The 2012 QB at Oaks Christian was 5* junior Brandon Dawkins who was born and raised in Hawaii and was rated as one of the top junior QBs in California. He is 6'4" and already gotten offers from Notre Dame, Utah, and was sideline at the USC/UCLA game. Hmmmm maybe Hawaii is calling him home?
Also former Warrior Jaloni Williams was a QB & DB at Oaks, during his frosh & soph years.
December 12th, 2012 at 8:53 am
Good morning Tsaikos!
Welcome to the Warrior Ohana, Mr. Franciskovic! Tall setters.
One more month till Warrior volleyball! Woohoo!
Best wishes to Mr. Falemalu and Mr. Hall.

In Cal and Kansas you can be a football player. In Hawaii, a local legend.

December 12th, 2012 at 9:33 am
Good morning everyone!
Good fortune to Falemalu!
December 12th, 2012 at 9:39 am
Nice color scheme on those volleyball jerseys.
December 12th, 2012 at 9:43 am
With Kansas' football record I don't think Charlie Weis will last another season being 1-11 or 2-10. Besides, I think he's better suited for being OC in the NFL. That being said, if Kohler wants to go to Kansas, that's a dicey proposition. California just changed coach.
Frankly, I thought Jeff Tedford is a very good coach. The plus for Cal is that they are one of the top schools academically. Can't say anything bad about them. If Kohler chooses them, I say, good decision and best of luck, and have a good experience there. But, I hope he decides on the HOME team.
December 12th, 2012 at 9:50 am
Good Morning Folks!
Welcome to MVB setter Franciskovic!
Cool MVB jersey!
Best wishes to Paipai!
All the best Ryan!
Please choose Hawaii and be a Warrior, Koehler!
December 12th, 2012 at 10:07 am
@#18, Red Zone: I find it odd that the Chancellor position does not have much autonomy and/or authority to hire the AD. Does that mean even for faculty hires the President has to be involved? MRC is the President of the UH system and Manoa is only one of the 10 campus in the system. UH wanted independence by breaking away from the Legislature to mitigate the bureaucratic morass and yet they created one within themselves.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:11 am

Any news on the local recruiting front? Lots of good players this past year from local high schools.
December 12th, 2012 at 12:08 pm
I did not think Pilares would turn out to be as great a football player as he has turned out to be; on the other hand, I thought Ostroski would absolutely rule at the college level given what he did in high school, which he hasn't.
In high school, Pilares was awsome, but light. In high school, Ostroski killed it in football and basketball, even though he was undersized.
Go figure.

We're all still here.
December 12th, 2012 at 12:23 pm
I DID meant "12:21" for the time in # 51.
December 12th, 2012 at 12:27 pm
#50 don't know about pilares' strength at damien, but his work ethic at UH was tremendous, and he became the teams strongest player (which doesn't say much for the rest of the team, he's not trent richardson). on the flip side, miah played 2 seasons of basketball, that's 2 seasons without serious weight training. he took the colt brennen attitude towards his career, he relied on just his natural talents, and didn't improve on it with off season work.
the big guys on the football team need to improve their strength and conditioning. air force linemen shouldn't be dominating the line of scrimmage. UH had zero 1st downs in the 2nd half against afa.
football without strength and endurance is hopeless.

BEST thing about it is, just a few days later (12/25), it'll be confirmed a bit that God only knows the end of days.
December 12th, 2012 at 12:57 pm
Reeve,
When deciding on where to play, just remember that there is only one place that allows all your family and friends to come to every game,......and also see you if they want by taking a trip to the mainland. Everywhere else means watching you on tv or a video stream due to the cost for them to travel.
p.s. The foods not that great up there. Hehe

December 12th, 2012 at 3:41 pm
Definitely a speedster. Just look at the seperation he gets once he gets into the backfield. However, he did have some big gaping holes to run through.
On one website, it says ran track and field, and so far has an offer from Southern Illinois and contact from Miami. Also, says he scored 950 on the SAT.
December 12th, 2012 at 3:51 pm
Reece, I remember about 6 yrs ago reading about Coach Mac offering this 7th or 8th grade boy a scholarship to play for UH. This UH fan followed your career and am proud to see you growing up to become a young talented man. Wish you choose Hawaii because I wanna see u and Kennedy, Charlie, Wa'a, and all da other local braddahs playing here on Sat. nights. I believe in Coach Chow, his dream is our dream. Is the Big LEast as lucrative as Boise and SDSU claimed it to be?
Media industry sources say the NEW Big LEast deal could be as low as $40M/year giving football-only members around $1.3M a year.
The MWC pays full members $2M-$3M per year.
BURN BABY BURN!
"CBSSports.com reported last week that a Big East contract could be worth as little as $60 million per year. Industry sources are saying now that number could be as low as $40 million per year. If that's the case, that's an average of $1.85 million per year per school. Seventy percent of that number would be football revenue, or $1.29 million. The Mountain West currently pays between $2 million-$3 million per year to its schools, according to sources."

December 12th, 2012 at 4:27 pm
Isn't the 2-3 million the MWC schools receive when the Mtn still had a contract with the conference?
December 12th, 2012 at 4:45 pm
#62...damn! 5-6?? The next coming of Jeff Sydner?
December 12th, 2012 at 5:05 pm
Shoko, the $2-3 million is the entire per-school payout from the MWC, including not only TV contract money but also BCS money, bowl proceeds and NCAA basketball credits. Only about $800,000 is derived from the conference TV contract with CBS, which is a reduction from the $1,200,000 that was paid to each MWC school before BYU, Utah and TCU left.
One of CBS's obligations under the TV contract was operating The Mtn to showcase MWC sports, but CBS (and its 50/50 partner NBC-Comcast) shut down The Mtn last year because it was a money loser. It's not yet clear what concessions the MWC got in exchange for releasing CBS from this obligation. One thing that seems to have changed is that MWC schools are now apparently able to earn direct "tier 3 rights" revenue, i.e. revenue from selling off the local broadcast rights to their games that are not shown by CBS or sold by CBS to ESPN, NBC or Fox. This was not allowed before The Mtn shut down. The reversion of "tier 3 rights" back to the MWC schools appears to be why UH has been able to retain its direct PPV contract with Oceanic Cable.

UH is in the final three for Koehler.. that's great news. I don't see him going to Kansas. That program is a dumpster fire and Koehler will hate the community and weather. KU is a basketball school and the fans/alumni know it. Football is always 2nd fiddle there.
Cal just had a coaching change, so its a bit unknown what his relationship is with Sonny Dykes. UH has a legit shot at keeping Koehler.

2012 will go down as the year of Bay Area: To wit:
1)The San Francisco Giants - World Champions
2)The Stanford Cardinals - Pac 12 champs and Rose Bowl
3)The San Jose St. Spartans - 9-3 and a bowl game
4)The Golden State Warriors - 15-7 thus far, beat Miami Heat tonight 97-95.
5)The San Francisco 49ers - 9-3-1 thus far.
It's been a great fall season, except for the California Bears. Reeve Koehler, don't go there!
Stay home and play in front of your family, friends, and Hawaii fans.

If the Big LEast votes to dissolve, I am guessing Boise State and San Diego State and the rest of the CUSA teams can go to whatever conference they want without having to pay an exit fee to a conference that does't exist.
Dare I say...Boise Not Going....

let bsu and sdst back into the mwc, no problem, as long as they pay for their own trips to hawaii. plus entry fee.

This is a recent tweet by the 6'6" 350 O-Line Tyler Burns. Looking good
"Norm Chow came to talk to me yesterday he has done great things, lets go #Hawaii #football"

Mahalo to Helen on the previous post for clarifying the difference between Stephen Tsai and Matt Levi although I would swear they are brothers.

Noticed the Hawaiian Flag on the V-ball jerseys. How come we can't get that on the football jerseys?
December 12th, 2012 at 9:58 pm
A recruit excited about Chow? Hmm... no that cant be. There are no names on the jerseys and cannot have long hair.
No way anyone would want to play for a coach like that.
Too much discipline is bad for you and blah blah blah....

Make B$U pay an entry fee of $20M, get rid of the Smurf Turf, make them stay for at least 10 yrs or pay a $50M fine, make THEM pay travel subsidies. Gotta wipe that smirk off their faces. Even some of their fans are arrogant SOBs. At the game, they were throwing confetti (and got busted by d1), saw a couple of them NOT standing during Hawaii Ponoi and one idiot even yelled "Man up" to an injured UH player.
