Making the grade
By Stephen Tsai
Forty-eight Warriors earned a GPA of at least 3.0 during the fall semester.
Four Warriors had 4.0 GPAs for the semester — tight end Harold Moleni, receiver Justin Clapp, defensive lineman Calen Friel and defensive back Brian Clay.
The best unit was the offensive line with a GPA of 3.22.
The quarterbacks were second at 2.97 — an average that would be higher if it included the grades of Sean Schroeder, a Duke graduate who took post-graduate classes at UH.
The Alo family should be proud. Defensive lineman Kaeo Alo had a 3.8 GPA, linebacker Kamalani Alo had a 3.46.
Mike Edwards, who declared for the NFL draft, had a 3.3 GPA.
In all, the Warriors' GPA was 2.73.
* * * * * *
It will take more of a commitment for a walk-on to compete for the Warriors.
A UH walk-on must have at least a GPA of 2.5 to play this year.
* * * * *

Happy birthday to a former 4.0 student — GMAHoney.

Ohayoooooooogozaimasu!!!!!
For Mr. Okai; R.I.P.
How do I
Say goodbye?
To what we had?
The good times that
Made us laugh
Outweigh the bad
I thought we'd get
To see forever
But forever's gone
Away
It's so hard
To say goodbye
To yesterday

Rumors are floating around on message boards this morning that the MWC is in serious talks with BYU about returning to the conference as member #12. Apparently this has been reported by both ESPN radio in Albuquerque and the Air Force play-by-play announcer on a Colorado Springs radio station.
It's hard to believe the Cougars would take what they presumably would consider a step backwards to rejoin the conference. But then, a lot of folks thought the same thing about Boise State until recently.
Obviously BYU taking the #12 spot would be bad news for San Diego State, unless the MWC wanted to expand further.

Great game - exciting and hard on the heart! Congratulations to Gib and the basketball team!
And great going - those GPAs are impressive considering that our football players have not only their studies but hours spent on the football field, the gym and watching films.

Yes, you want a smart football team, a tough, physical, talented football team. It reminds me of a recent bowl game that John Gruden announced. On one play there was a stupid penalty by a player and after that Gruden immediately said "if you can't control yourself, you're not big time, man!" Football is a game of emotion, but the good teams keep their emotions in check, period! It happens all the time in the NFL too.
Congratulations to the UH football team and especially those who made 3.0 or better. Well done. To the four who had 4.0, excellent and keep up the great work.
January 4th, 2013 at 8:58 am
Congratulations to the basketball warriors on a hard fought win last night and to the football warriors for the hard work in the classroom. They will all need to get a regular job at some point in life and the degree will definitely help.

If BYU returns to the MWC, will the scheduled game on 12-7-2013 be a conference game?
That would put the UH in a bind to find another opponent to fill out the schedule...unless the UH plays 9 MWC games.
January 4th, 2013 at 10:27 am
Hoping Kennedy T has a big game and stays committed to the Warriors. If he works that well against the top o linemen in the nation he will give us lots to cheer about as a Warrior.

COngrats to the student-athletes. I don't have any stats to back it up, but these appear to be pretty good numbers for a football program.
Very glad to hear Edwards was a 3.3GPA. That will help him during the interview process prior to the draft. The NFL is all about processing information quickly. Having talent is only one part of being a NFL player. The best players all think quickly.

I'm not sure how true this is? But it look like SDSU is back in the MWC today and BYU is working on deal to get back into the MWC. See Below.
http://csnbbs.com/sh...9655#pid8789655
Post #22. Speaks of same stuff I've been seeing and goes with all of the noise going on out there. UHCougar posts this:
I posted this on another thread . . . I have a longstanding relationship with someone who has direct access to the MWC decision makers . . . says BYU has made a verbal commitment to join the MWC, and they are working out the details . . . he also says, SDSU is a done deal. . . and, the MWC is expecting UH to say yes to an offer to become No. 14 if BYU confirms it's joining the MWC . . . we'll see. . .
January 4th, 2013 at 2:48 pm
Kennedy Tulimasealii 's Team Black beat Team White 16-3 in the High School Under Armour All-America football game. The winning coach is Herman (Hello, we play to win the game) Edwards. Is Tulimasealii the first UH verbal commit to play in a national high school all star game? If so, UH is breaking new ground.

January 4th, 2013 at 3:54 pm
Interseting quote from the article above.
"Sources said Friday that Anae left on his own volition because he wanted a change and had grown weary of dealing with other coaches on the staff, most notably longtime BYU assistant Lance Reynolds. Reynolds, a 31-year coaching veteran who oversaw the tight ends the past two seasons, resigned after the Cougars’ 23-6 win over San Diego State in last month’s Poinsettia Bowl but never said the word "retire" and left open the possibility of returning to coaching."

#70: Gotta remember the religion and the LDS Church plays a role with coaches like Robert Anae (former missionary). Interesting that Mark Atuaia is, once again, trying to land an assistant position at BYU after being out of coaching for the past few years (working in BYU student services).

I'm sold. Johnny Manziel is the best player in college football and more than deserving of the Heisman. Kid is a phenom. He makes the game look easy.
January 4th, 2013 at 6:01 pm
For made in hawaii per fb: A guy walks into the library, goes straight up to the librarian, and yells, "Give me on cheeseburger, french fry and large coke." A shocked libriarian then responds in a stern but rather loud whisper, "Sir, this is a library!" The embarrassed guy then says "Oh, oh, oh. Sorry, sorry." Then he whispers "Can I have a cheeseburger, french fry and a large coke".
January 4th, 2013 at 6:06 pm
Yep, now let's put to bed all the talk about how someone else should have been the Heisman winner. It's not even close. I really can't foresee any defensive player winning the Heisman.
January 4th, 2013 at 6:15 pm
turfwar and WarriorMojo, I gotta agree with you guys that Manziel had a great game. He sure doesn't look like a rs freshman, lets wait until Monday till we make final conclusions.
January 4th, 2013 at 6:25 pm
Nytal!
January 4th, 2013 at 6:26 pm
After watching Manziel in today's Cotton Bowl, he definitely is, I repeat, definitely is an excellent representative of the Heisman Trophy award winner, and I wish, B. Curran would just shaddup about Manti Teo and how deserving Manti should have been to win the Heisman indicating that the voters had it wrong who should have won the Heisman. 'Johnny Football" is the HEISMAN WINNER and, geezus, he more than proved he's worth today not only as a Heisman winner but, I think, definitely SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE MAXWELL AWARD WINNER as the OUTSTANDING COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYER this season. Man, I can't wait to see him play next year.
January 4th, 2013 at 6:36 pm
If Manziel was eligible for the NFL draft I would select him, even with the first pick. He's that good. The guy just makes plays. 516 yards in total offense, 229 yards rushing, 287 yards passing. That's the quintissential dual QB, the rave of college football and it's even in the NFL already. Cam Newton, RGIII, Wilson, Kaepernick, more coming. Mariota, Manziel, Hogan, Aplin, Bridgewater, Golston, Fajardo, Kelly from ASU, Hundley, etc. etc.
January 4th, 2013 at 6:37 pm
Isn't Johnny Football up for charges with the law? What the Heisman represents should be an All-American type guy. Super game though.
January 4th, 2013 at 7:09 pm

#69 & #70,
Not liking it.....with Robert Anae as OC......likely bringing in Mark Atuaia as the new RB coach....especially with Faga Wily scheduled to trip to Provo on the 17th.....together with Red Raider teammate and Cougar commit Ku-J Tapusoa.
No doubt that this will re-energize BYU's recruiting efforts on the North Shore.....and be even tougher recruiting competition against the Warriors.

it's only for 3 misdemeanor's... disorderly conduct, providing false information to police, and possession of a fake id.
they didn't get him for drinking under age though, probably because he's rich. how many college students can afford to buy tickets to a rockets game and the next night buy courtside seats to a mavs game.
January 4th, 2013 at 7:56 pm
The Red Raiders Pipeline to provo is open again Robert anae and mark atuaia will recruit all the kahuku and top Local Boys from the Island to play for the cougars.chow had a chance to hire both these guys but he passed on them, now they will comeback and bite him in the Ass. say bye to faga Wiley for sure now.
January 4th, 2013 at 7:56 pm
If memory serves me correctly, Mark Atuaia applied for an assistant coaching job at BYU a few years ago with very little coaching experience, but was not hired by Bronco Mendenhall. There was some pilikia from that, namely coming from Vai Sikahema. Atuaia (who has a law degree from BYU) has been working in an admin position at BYU the last few years, not coaching, and now suddenly he's qualified to become a full-time assistant. With Steve Kaufusi being the only Poly coach at BYU has, reportedly, hurt recruiting of Polynesian players, especially compared to Utah, which had three Poly coaches.

why do you listen to curren, he's the worst football announcer in the history of college football, plus he's an obnoxious jerk to callers that have a different point of view.
curren is the type of kid that would constantly lose, and then he would take his ball and go home.
the reverend felipe is way better at calling a football game.
it sucks for Hawaii fans because the radio station treats curren like he's god, and will never replace him for UH football games.
January 4th, 2013 at 8:07 pm
Does anyone know what;s happening up at the President's House (College Hill)?
Assuming that there was nothing in the deed of gift, maybe they should tear it down and build a dorm there. They always can have those fancy receptions elsewhere - like maybe at the East-West Center.
January 4th, 2013 at 8:11 pm
Johnny Football is ridiculous!!! He makes it look so easy. Chip Kelly probably can't wait until Menziel and Mariota are eligible for the draft.
I have a wild suspicion that Kelly ends up at Carolina. I heard Ron Rivera's future will be decided on Saturday. Carolina has the personnel to run his offense... Cam at QB, and D. Williams at RB. There's no defense there but the offense would be explosive. The NFC South is pretty manageable by NFL standards. The Eagles would be the best fit for immediate success, the schedule would be tough caz all NFC East teams are good. The Eagles overall roster is decent and McCoy is an elite RB and would flourish under Kelly.
I hope the Browns are offering Kelly a massive contract because Cleveland is a terrible franchise and an equally terrible place to live. The only way Kelly goes to Cleveland is if he wants to be in the running for Menziel or Mariota down the road. Cleveland is at least a few years of quality drafts from being a good team. I like the old man rookie QB, but I don't know if he's a franchise caliber QB.

how many poly coaches does the UH have...Tony Tuioti...Lewis Powell?
January 4th, 2013 at 8:28 pm
#96: Lewis Powell, Tony Tuioti, Keith Uperesa, Chow, Inoke Funaki (fmr GA), Tommy Heffernan (S & C).
January 4th, 2013 at 8:32 pm
92 old school Dave you are correct Atuaia got another chance cause robert Anae hired him this time around.
January 4th, 2013 at 8:33 pm
I remember when there used to be an International Food style cafeteria in basement/ground floor of the East West Center.
With the passing of Senator Inouye, I wonder what is the future of the East-West Center?
January 4th, 2013 at 8:36 pm
Consensus among BYU fans and observers is that they're taking a step backwards with the hiring of Robert Anae.

(#95 Former UH Athlete)
Brother, I agree with you 100%, "Johnny Football" is indeed ridiculous, and he does make it look so effortless.
And Kelly, to the NFL, his style of play, with some obvious tweaking due to the number of great athletes on the defensive side of the ball, I mean that could be fun to watch.
January 4th, 2013 at 11:17 pm
@100,
Take away that single year (his last one) where he had to play duck-duck-goose with the QB's and he had a tremendous stint as OC.
I find it interesting that the reason why he did not re-apply with Mendenhall's staff was due to him not getting along with coach Lance Reynalds. The very same guy who has been offered the Hawaii OC job. Oh fun.
January 4th, 2013 at 11:19 pm

#94 - tommui: It was listed on the Hawai‘i Register of Historic Places in 2002. Not sure but I think it is protected by that. I do know that if you do any work on a building that is listed with the National Register of Historic Places you can not change the original design of the building unless it can be return to the original design without problems. So in other words you can change things as long as it can be undone and your back where you started.
I did a job once on a building that was on the National Register of Historic Places we could not demo anything but we could block or cover up things, but they had to be able to return to the original state without to much cost, so we use screws everywhere so all that needed to be done was unscrew everything and hocus pocus you had what you had when you started.
January 5th, 2013 at 1:27 am
tommui - plus I think greenwood is nuts not wanting to live there, 99.99% of people would give their left arm to live in such a beautiful house.

Apparently, Robert Anae can be one real hard-head kine guy. Seems to lack communication skills (according to people at BYU). BYU players were not sad to see him leave the first time there as OC.
Maybe they should let the head football coach live at the president's house in Manoa. On second thought, maybe we don't want to there
