Option play
By Stephen Tsai
Running back John Lister said he will need a couple of more weeks to decide on his college-football future.
Lister, who has two seasons of eligibility remaining, is set to earn his bachelor's degree in May. His goal is to earn a master's in kinesiology. UH's kinesiology program is not accepting master's applicants for the 2013-2014 academic year.
His options are to wait until 2014 to apply or to transfer to another school that will admit him into the master's program this fall. He has requested — and received — a release to discuss options with other schools.
Lister is one of the UH coaches' favorites because of his solid play and strong work ethic. He is considered to be one of the Warriors' top special-team players.

June Jones, who triggered the Warrior/Rainbow debate more than a decade ago, backed UH athletic director Ben Jay's decision to use "Warriors" as the nickname for all UH men's teams.
"It's best to help the university maximum it's marketing," said Jones, who dropped "Rainbow" from the football team's nickname in 2000.

February 14th, 2013 at 8:25 am
I hope lister stays. He is a solid contributor
February 14th, 2013 at 8:26 am
Lister would be missed. He does not give you flashy, spectacular highlights, but he is just so rock steady. You call on him to do something and he does it...hard. I hope there is a way he can stay as even with all of the incoming folks, Lister will be that guy who will always be ready and does not need a warm up to do that of what is being asked of him.
February 14th, 2013 at 8:27 am
ST, mahalo for update on John Lister, but what's Will Gregory's status?
February 14th, 2013 at 8:29 am
wow....lister will be missed.
too bad the school can't meet lister's needs.

being able to graduate in three years while playing such a time demanding sport as football is an awesome and incredible achievement.
i always felt the lister would have made a very good h-back.

Great items from you, man. I've consider your stuff previous to and you are just too magnificent. I really like what you've bought right here, really like what you are saying and the best way by which you assert it. You make it enjoyable and you still take care of to stay it wise. I cant wait to read far more from you. This is actually a tremendous website.

Very well put! You get enough guys like Lister on the team and they will be very competitive. Good luck to Lister what ever he does decide.
Stephen -
I'll betcha using the name "Warriors" also helps UH to "maximize" its marketing too.
JJ redefined our football program in many positive ways.
February 14th, 2013 at 8:40 am
June was right! "Maximize it's marketing"
February 14th, 2013 at 8:40 am
Good morning everyone!
Tough call for Lister when the Master's program he wants is not accepting for 2013-2014. I suppose he's already spoken directly to the department Chairperson.

February 14th, 2013 at 8:48 am
JJ got zero from the H, nor did UH. UH declined to purchase the rights to the H from the artist. As a matter of fact, unless the recently purchased the rights to the H, UH pays royalties on all merchandise sales with the H logo to Osaki sp.

A Joe can best explain how a graphic artist holds ownership to his or her design of a logo unless their is an agreed sale of the design to the proprietor.

Happy Valentine's Day Tsaikos!
Best wishes to Mr. Lister in whatever he decides. Hope he decides to stay.
Safe travels to the MVB Warriors as they embark on a tough road trip. 4 games in 5 days at UCLA and co-#1 UCI. Hope everyone is healthy.
Nice story on Mr. Timmer, ST. Glad we were able to poach him from BYWho.

GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
John Lister - say it isn't so!
February 14th, 2013 at 9:13 am
Howzit, Gang!
Happy Valentine's Day to all you lovebirds out there!
Finally stopped raining, but little chilly today. Another 4 months, and we hope to be on our way back home! Can't wait to sit around and talk story with you guys (and gals), over some simple food, like saimin, hamburger steak, etc.
Gotta love the work ethic of all those student-athletes who give their all, in every sport. Sometimes, people's paths take different turns than what we'd like to see. Just gotta hope that those in the wings are ready to step up and fill the void.
Go easy on the sweets today!

Aloha and condolences to the 'ohana of Bill Smith, one of the greatest local athletes of all time. A nice write up in today's SA:

Who cares what June Jones thinks! He's the reason Chow is having to rebuild a program! JJ let his players do whatever they wanted, played favorites to the stars, and had no discipline.
February 14th, 2013 at 9:20 am
UH has been trying. Even Tom Apple has gone to bat for Lister.
February 14th, 2013 at 9:26 am
Some programs do not have rolling admissions and only allow either spring or fall admissions.
Maybe Lister can apply as a non-classified graduate and enroll in the coureses needed for the MA/MS. That way, when he applies for the MA program he won't have wasted time and effort.
February 14th, 2013 at 9:29 am
At least Lister has options. Good to see a student athlete succeed in school.
Cruises? I see Carnival has cheap and extended cruises that is powered by tugboat. Nice.
Warriors and Rainbow Wahine it is. Moving forward, GOBOWS!
GO WARRIORS!
GO RAINBOW WAHINE!

# 35: I was just going to post ... "Did he talk DIRECTLY to the Chancellor?".
Good for the Chancellor, and John Lister.
February 14th, 2013 at 9:36 am
I don't think the nickname matters to marketing as much as the "H" and the kapa designs
February 14th, 2013 at 9:44 am
Re: #36
IWTHM has a good point. When I couldn't be formally accepted into a masters program for a year, I was told to register with Graduate Division anyway and was given permission to take the appropriate courses beforehand. It was the program department chair that advised me and gave permission.
I don't know if the initial "unclassified" status is OK for athletic eligibility though.

February 14th, 2013 at 9:50 am
Wasn't the "H" logo decided in a contest? So I guess that means that whoever designed it still has the rights? Maybe we should have another contest with a new logo and offer the winner a cash prize or 2 free lifetime admissions to all UH games. Then also state that whoever enters the contest, must turn over the marketing rights to the school.
February 14th, 2013 at 9:55 am
The world needs to take back the rainbow from the gays!
February 14th, 2013 at 9:57 am
Stephen, Mahalo for silencing the rumors of Lister being forced out.
February 14th, 2013 at 9:59 am
Don't think we need to change 'H logo'
It take money to change logo which UH don't have
Here's Hirasaki and Osaki with New UH Logo back in 2001:
http://www.hawaii.edu/malamalama/2001/01/H-men.html
February 14th, 2013 at 10:01 am
"Maximize their marketing?" They need to invest in their athletics program. Dollar for dollar it could be the most important marketing investment UH can make.

jm# hhhhellloooo howwwww yyyyyou
condolences to Bill Smythe (?) one time commish of old ILH back in the day. he passed yesterday.
February 14th, 2013 at 10:02 am
#45, I like the logo but UH doesn't own the rights, so if we get a new (similar?) logo, then maybe UH can get money to market the logo.
February 14th, 2013 at 10:14 am
the "H" designers are also huge supporters of UH.
February 14th, 2013 at 10:19 am
@#42 & #48 papa: I don't recall there being a contest. Osaki & Co. was directly contacted, I thought. Anything similar to the existing logo will probably go through some litigation to protect artist's intellectual property. It would have to be significantly different as argued by lawyers. You know about the general counsel office at UH. It will be expensive with all the contract lawyers they will have to hire.
February 14th, 2013 at 10:22 am
If UH don't have the rights to 'H logo' then they should
UH Bookstore and and others sure sell a lot of 'H logo' items
I made a huge banner 4' x 7' with 'H logo' from Perterson Sign to carry to Sugar Bowl.
I personally got the clearence from UH to put on the logo on banner Thanking the Warriors for:
Fantastic Year. And personally gave it to Mac when he was named the HC.
'H Logo' Belongs to Hawaii and no others.
February 14th, 2013 at 10:23 am
i wonder what osaki & co are asking for in return for giving the rights to uh. it would be a great "support" gesture to make a mutually beneficial transfer since it's been over ten years already.
February 14th, 2013 at 10:32 am
I believe Osaki offered the rights to the logo for $50K outright, UH refused. He probably collected that amount in royalties alone in the first year, what was UH AD thinking. It was Herman Frazier tenure, with Dobelle as head honcho.
February 14th, 2013 at 10:34 am
@#53 Ralph: Aaahhh...it comes back to the "fumbler", eh!
February 14th, 2013 at 10:34 am
John Lister sounds like a solid Student-Athlete. I hope he can be helped out to maintain his goals.
February 14th, 2013 at 10:47 am
Still very upsetting to hear that the Athletic Dept gets almost nothing from the sales of athletic merchandise. It all goes into the UH general fund, never to be seen again.
February 14th, 2013 at 10:49 am
if all this "H" logo talk is accurate...then it's another shamefully idiotic example of how things are done in Hawaii. if the UH does not have the rights to the logo, wouldn't that be a much bigger blunder then stevie?
to whom is the "H" logo registered/trademarked?
February 14th, 2013 at 10:49 am
Osaki donate the rights back to UH for lifetime seating at all UH sporting events if true. If not keep laughing all the way to the bank.
February 14th, 2013 at 10:59 am
This past season was the first bought season tickets. You see so much more when you watch the games in person. It's his solid play game in game out that has made Lister my favorite Warrior... His excellent work in the classroom is something I didn't know, but just adds the icing on top... Great Job Jonny follow your dreams. I surely hope somebody that might know somebody who can put in a good word with another guy that knows a guy can help get him in the Masters program.
February 14th, 2013 at 11:03 am
I'm okay with Warriors. I'd rather have seen Rainbow Warriors because...
1) Honor the past
2) Unique to Hawaii. Warriors is not unique to Hawaii and there are many college programs with the Warriors nickname and
3) Would be consistent with the women's program. Rainbow Warriors & Rainbow Wahine.
Oh well, "Let's Go Bows!"
February 14th, 2013 at 11:15 am
The Story on my first and last 'H Logo' Banner goes:
Initially, I did have problem making ‘H Logo’ Banner to take to Sugar Bowl.
Peterson Sign wouldn’t make it unless I got a clearance from UH.
I told them it will be held up from 50 yard line and you can put Peterson sign logo on the back for free Ad!
And since I got the clearance; They called me day later to pick it up day just before my flight to New Orleans.
They didn’t put their name on the back of banner.
The second problem I found out on New Year Eve was Super Dome security will confiscate any banners or any items large like my 4’ x 7’ banner.
At the last minute I had to ask Paul Arnett to sneak it in for me.
Thanks Paul!
I wonder who has that Sugar Bowl Banner now that Mac not there anymore?
February 14th, 2013 at 11:23 am
In years past, I would be very vocal at football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball games.
Now, I just sit and watch like a hundred year old man - smile sometimes, grimmace other times, and "grunt" at other times, but mostly quiet - is it my culture? upbringing? lack of serious interest? nothing to cheer for?
the gusto is gone and has been for some time now - no more stand up sit down fight fight - perhaps UH should consider placing ticket holders by how they cheer or don't cheer so people behind you say, "sit down, we cannot see" or make snide remarks about "their view is blocked"
unlike the mainland counter parts, there is no standing from start to finish - no loud noises - no vocalizations of any kind - ah, yes, we live in Hawaii nei!

IN our US Army War College class, there was a requirement to read On War by Eric von Clausewitz(sp).
There were many noteable statements, but none more important than "the will" of the people to fight and win - without the will, as in Viet Nam, failure is glaring back at you
Today, on MSNBC, Rev Al Sharpton describes how nations much weaker than the US can guarantee its citizens health benefits - he says, "the only thing that stops us is our will".

Lately I hear them yelling too now.
And I still stand up when ever I get excited.

What is WRONG with our UH Kinesiology program that they can make an exception to allow Lister to enroll in their program. Just shows that the UH is "out of synch"...This is something Apple should look into.
February 14th, 2013 at 11:53 am
#69:
be careful as MRC Greenwood may undermine all that is good!
February 14th, 2013 at 12:01 pm
I dunno, this should be a GREAT opportunity for Greenwood to show her clout and brinksmanship in correcting this situation with Lister. It's a shame that our University can't offer or is inflexible to allow for a "student in good standing" to enroll in a graduate program. What a disincentive to any athlete wanting to attend the UH.

I wasn’t going to respond BUT
Discipline comes from themselves; They are all young men old enough to know what’s right and wrong.
Commitment and Discipline has to come from with-in. No one can teach that.
What June Jones did was put UH on the map with high scoring R & S offense.
ESPN was calling every week to interview JJ. His only job was to teach R & S Offense.
By the way a lot of NFL Teams are using it now.
Is it the Teachers job to teach discipline? That should come from home.
That’s why my mom made me practice my piano every day for 2 hours.

February 14th, 2013 at 12:16 pm
#69,
Gotta disagree with you there. Don't think exemptions/exceptions should be made unless it's to avoid some severe hardship.
LOTS of students are denied admission to programs because they have to wait for the enrollment period. It's just the way it is. There is a cohort and matriculation schedule to stick with. Can't be just granting them this and that and whatever for all kinds of reason. Crazy.
February 14th, 2013 at 12:17 pm
Discipline with regards to student-athletes in college is NOT a black and white situation.
There are coaches at UH right now that have been credited by former student-athletes for helping them attain discipline in their daily lives off the field or off the court. In FACT, I personally know of a former student-athlete that said themselves that their coach at UH played a big role in helping them realize how important being committed to their studies is more so that just being able to play.
Sure discipline comes from within and on the individual, but external assistance and guidance plays a bigger role more than some think.
To give ZERO credit to the fact that college coaches play a big role in the development of young men and women is completely ignorant and out of touch. They wont reach everybody, but for the most part they do.
February 14th, 2013 at 12:26 pm
Just speculation on my part (never a good thing
).
Seems like Mr. Lister wants to apply to the Athletic Training program. I have no idea why they're not accepting applications for the coming year, but there could be a number of reasons. A key faculty member could be going on sabbatical and thus, the courses they teach won't be offered, or, practice sites might not be available, or, the program may be going through a revamp.
February 14th, 2013 at 12:47 pm
#34 & #72
both are correct.
JJ's philosophy was he didn't care if the players worked out or followed the prescribed training regimen as long as they did the 220's when they opened fall camp. and that laid back, laissez faire way of doing things was also the mantra of Mel Delaura. i think most of JJ's staff was pretty mellow, especially the old guys. except for Lumpkin. Lumpkin and Mcknight would raise it up a few notches.
as a whole, JJ"s teams lacked dedication. there were many players that put in the work like Davone Bess and Adam Leonard, but there were others that rested on their outstanding athletic ability and those were usually local players like an often injured LB from the windward side.
if you aren't getting better, you're getting worse. greatness is achieved in the off season.
seems like the culture of the football program has been changing the past few years. more players are taking part in volunteer workouts and unsupervised practices.

... Lame Kiffin, really lame ...
from msn news ...
" Apparently Lane Kiffin and the Southern California Trojans FIRED assistant coach
Kennedy Pola because Kiffin felt threatened by Pola.
According to Inside USC:
A Pac-12 coach, who did not wish to be identified, said he heard USC assistant Kennedy Pola was fired because Lane Kiffin felt “threatened” by Pola.
*** “He knew Kennedy was a no-nonsense guy and saw through the way things are done and isn’t afraid to speak up,” the coach said. “So he made a change.” ***
Kiffin has been at USC since 2010 and was ranked number 1 in the preseason. Instead of living up to their ranking, Kiffin’s Trojans went 7-6 and lost to Georgia Tech in their bowl game. The future definitely doesn’t look bright for Lane Kiffin, especially if this is true. "

Tough road schedule for Pack football in the new MWC
2:00 pm, Feb 12, 2013 | Written by Dan Hinxman
inShare.0 Print date: Feb. 13, 2013
The Nevada football team’s 2013 Mountain West schedule is full of tough road games.
The Wolf Pack will face Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State on the road next fall, the conference announced Tuesday. The Pack’s conference home games will be against Air Force, Hawaii, San Jose State and UNLV. The three teams Nevada will not face in 2013 or 2014 are New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming.
Boise State, Fresno State and San Diego State tied for the MWC title last season.
“It’s a tough conference schedule year-in and year-out,” first year Wolf Pack coach Brian Polian said in a release. “It doesn’t matter which divisional opponents you get home or away and which teams from the other division you get or miss each year. That shows right there just how good of a football conference that the Mountain West is.”
The conference released opponents for each of the next four seasons. Dates for the 2013 conference schedule are expected in the coming weeks.
The MWC also noted that the scheduling format for the new 12-member football lineup, which in 2013-14 splits into two six-team divisions, was computer generated and consists of five intra-division games and three cross-division games each season. Each team will play four home and four road conference games each season, and will play every Mountain West opponent home and away during each four-year cycle.
In 2015 and 2016, the MWC teams Nevada will not face are Air Force, Boise State and Colorado State.
The Wolf Pack’s 2013 schedule is now complete. Nevada opens the season Aug. 31 at UCLA. Other non-conference games are UC Davis (Mackay Stadium, Sept. 14), Florida State (Tallahassee, Sept. 21) and BYU (Mackay Stadium, Nov. 30).
The inaugural Mountain West championship game will be played Dec. 7, 2013 at the home of the divisional champion with the higher BCS ranking.

# 87 agreed."Fact is, with all the talent USC had last season, they were under-achievers!"
Yup, and Monte Kiffin left, along with another D-coach.
February 14th, 2013 at 2:53 pm
Maybe not for tonight's game.....but to all the old guys who sit there with their arms crossed through the whole game....you take up too much space doing that so I guess more people gotta stand up! Maybe we need more guys who sit like this at the games! LOL
I was at a volleyball game where my father and the old guy sitting next to me were both doing the crossed arms thing. Dang! it was tighter than an airline seat in the sardine can section!
February 14th, 2013 at 3:03 pm
please keep kiffin for 1 more season....
no better a team to beat then a team with players who dislike their coach.
I'm looking for kiffin to really screw something up come spring or fall camp.
to me kiffin has always had talent around him in players and in coaching all the way to having daddy at his side...but seemingly he can never solidify that talent and maximize it.
IMHO kiffin = a bad coach, a bad leader, abrasive, and cocky.

I like Lane Kiffin. Why? Because I think Norm Chow can outcoach him when they play together in the first game. Go Warriors. Crush USC. First upset of the college football season in 2013.
Aloha, John Lister. Tough deal. If I was him, he's got to go and tranfer to another FBS school that does have a master degree program in kinesinology. Great student, great person, very good football player. Thanks for being a Warrior.

A-House,
I feel your pain. For B-ball, I stand for the opening tip, and then sit down. However, we should stand until UH makes their first basket... a lot of schools do that.
For F-ball, I stand for the opening kickoff. After that I stand to get a better look when get fights in the lower stands.
Anyway we pay a seat premium, so I like to use the seat...
February 14th, 2013 at 4:47 pm

Warriors getting blownout at UC Davis at the half 47-31. Very reminiscent of the last game at home. Need to go to the full court press very soon.

Actually, I thought that except for Marqise Lee's first-play 75-yard TD and his 3rd Qtr. 100-yard kick-off return, Hawaii did not play that badly in last season's opening game. Looking forward to the re-match.

off topic and on topic....
build a casino, charge locals $100 to go in-free for non-residents (tourists).
this is what they do in tight okole singapore.
it's still cheaper for locals who wold have gone to vegas, locals with not that much money can't afford to gamble and worsen their situation because they can't get in, and it gives the asian tourist base of japanese, chinese, and koreans more to do...80% of chinese and koreans tourists do like to gamble.
just asking cos the state needs money and with that said there is no way it can fund and take UH sports to the next level without a "sports tax" or "raise in tuition or student fees". I don't think businesses, donors, and boosters will or would like to continually invest the way things are.
i see a day coming where ticket sales will add on or include a 12% gst tax.
how would you feel with a 12% "sports tax" added in the price of your ticket?
February 14th, 2013 at 6:13 pm
Some teams just got your number!!
Warrior BB got torched!
One snap and clear and let's start another winning streak.
Good luck this Saturday!

The Athletic Training program is only taking a class every other year which was attributed to funding or lack of according to people my son talked to two years ago. Too bad because I was hoping he would learn from Mr Eric Okazaki but because he had to wait he has moved on to other options. Even with a Masters the financial prospects for athletic trainers in the DOE is not nearly as attractive as say a two year certificate from KCC in training to conduct MRI exams or x-rays. A RN or EMS worker has the opportunity to have an even more very lucrative career with similar academic demands. But it's a way to stay in sports and keep close to something you love. Some Cali schools have dropped the program all together.
February 14th, 2013 at 8:33 pm
@112 Former UH athlete Ashley Ruff is an MICT with EMS and a very good one at that.

February 14th, 2013 at 10:09 pm
As a whole body of work, I've liked the progress of the mbb team. However, tonight was just hard to watch. Had to stop half-way through the 2nd half when my stress level hit the danger level. Not being a basketball expert, I don't know if I'm just plain wrong or whether I'm right in what I saw.
The previous game (at SSC) saw the opponent's defense packing it in and daring the Warriors to hit it from the outside. UC Davis was just more of the same. Often there were 5 players at and below the free throw line. Yet, UH persisted in trying to drive it in and dish it off in those crowded conditions. Even when the point guard was left wide open at the top, he would dribble in and try to dish off with all those bodies packed in. The results were predictable. Lots of turn-overs with balls being touched off the dribble and passes trying to get through too tight spots. When the ball went inside to the bigs, there were instant double-teams. More turnovers when players tried too hard to score against the double team. This went on and on until I turned it off in the second half. Really disappointed in the lack of adjustments...perhaps, I should term it "effective adjustments". When it's packed in that much, you have to shoot it from outside cuz that's all that they are giving you. I'll bet a sushi roll, we'll see the same thing in the next game.
February 14th, 2013 at 10:41 pm
Hi, BG!
Good Wahine game tonight. More on Saturday at the SSC.

After 2100 so I'll quote some excerpts from a CruiseCritic background story on the loss of power-type casualties. Note that propulsion systems today are electrically powered--so when the main generators go down, so does propulsion as well as all other systems...like pumps, A/C, elevators, cooking, etc.)
Interesting coincidence that mikey mentions the Norwegian Breakaway for after the Navy game. Tsai-ko cruisers know the karaoke Bombardiers are going on the Carnival Breeze this year too. The power stays on...

Just bad timing I suppose for Lister. Yeah, UH does have grad degrees for kinesiology, not sure why it is not ongoing. Could be like what IDKWTHM or jm2375 mentioned. Surely there could be compromises or understandings made by the Department Heads for Lister to remain a student/athlete at Manoa.
