Empty closet

The NBA's Jason Collins today became the first active pro athlete in one of this country's major sports to disclose he is gay.

Newsworthy? Of course. It is especially significant for victims of bullying and discrimination.

But shocking? Nah.

Of course, there are gay athletes. There also are gay pastors, PTA presidents and CPAs. Gays have played, coached  and administered at UH.

What was significant today was that  a player coming out was not the lead sports story. (Tim Tebow's release from the Jets trumps all.) It will be a true measure of acceptance when a player's sexual orientation won't be news at all.

The Warriors will have their final team meeting of the spring this afternoon.

This week, each player will have an individual meeting with his position coach and then with head coach Norm Chow.
