We all know that know-it-all newcomer who mistakes Hawaii's laid-back lifestyle for indecisiveness.
Heck, I was that guy.
And then one day in social studies, while acting like how that guy acts, I got hit on the head with a wad of paper. It proved to be metaphorical.
"Hey, Katonk," Harrison Kawate whispered. And then Harry, who would become one of my best friends and the MC at my wedding, gave the talk that all newcomers should receive.
I'm reminded of that when I read tweets about missing lightbulbs at UH or reasons about why Rainbows will no longer be affiliated with UH's men's sports teams. The intent is well-meanig and correct, but there are ways to do things without blaming predecessors or appearing to be self-serving.
In the case of the Warrior/Rainbow debate, of course, it was correct to go with one nickname. No doubt about that.
It wasn't a difficult declaration. There are no bylaws about nicknames; no approval needed from the UH president or Board of Regents. At UH, it is easier to pick a nickname than to hire a conditioning coach. Heck, it's easier than changing a lightbulb. All you need is a Twitter account.
The mistake is to acknowledge the decision was based on marketing and branding. A no-no in marketing is to let consumers know they are being marketed. Also, in time, there will be the realization that the rainbow truly is dead. It's similar to fans of canceled TV shows hoping for a movie. It rarely happens. In this situation, there will be no retro nights, no secondary apparel lines. When it's gone, it's gone, and the realization will inevitably generate more grumbling. This is Hawaii. The temperature of public opinion is not taken on Dole Street at 5 p.m. on the Friday before finals week. And no matter how much inclusiveness was involved in the decision, there will be someone who says: "Nobody asked me what I thought." That's just the way it is.
