Catching on

With next week's start of the bridge session, several newcomers are beginning to report to the football team. One newcomer — receiver Daniel Masifilo — already has been training for three weeks, and he has been one of the surprises of the player-coordinated unsupervised workouts.

dan2

Masifilo is a tall receiver (6-3, 205) with sure hands and accurate route-running. He is a 2009 Campbell High graduate who was at Mount San Antonio College for a year and Arizona State for three years. He left ASU this past December, applied at UH, and received acceptance last month. Unless he is granted a medical hardship for the injury (broken wrist) he suffered at Mount SAC, he is a one-for-one player.

"If I can get that (year) back, that would be good," he said. "But I'm going to go all out this year because it might be my last year."

He is immediately eligible because he is a walk-on who was not recruited by ASU or UH.

"I just wanted to come home," Masafilo said. "I wish I transferred a little bit earlier. But I'm blessed with this opportunity with coach (Norm) Chow. ... I always wanted to play for Hawaii, but the opportunity wasn't really there. Now I have a chance. I'm going to take advantage of it."

He has used grants, loans and jobs to pay for his tuition and school loans.

"It's a struggle, but I love the sport, I love this game with a passion," he said.

ss

Quarterback Sean Schroeder, who underwent back surgery on April 1, is on track to resume football workouts on July 1. But he has kept active by studying videos, and calling plays during the unsupervised 7-on-7 drills.

* * * * *

If anybody was wondering, no, Aaron Hernandez did not play in UH's game against Florida (but Tim Tebow and Cam Newton did).

Going through the archives, Tom Brady led Michigan to a 48-17 victory over UH in 1998. Brady was 9 of 10 for 142 yards in that game.

Here's a highlight: Michigan-Hawaii video.

Hope the Techies find out how to solve the spam problem!

  4. rage777:

Daniel should have come last year, he might have seen a lot of playing time with all the injuries.

ST, is Sean happy to see you??? Looks like a tent.

  5. jm2375:

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Work hard in the classroom, weight room and on the field!

  6. Stephen Tsai:

    Techies are working on it.

    must be very interesting viewing.

I recall someone visiting such a site and when called upon by management, person said it happened in error - then confronted with 3 hours of viewing an error???

Daniel looks good, physically - check out them bricks!!! - that's a great 6-pack!!

    Good morning everyone!

Cookies, cache, and SPAM... and donuts too. :|

  19. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Good Morning Gangeez!

Nice to have another tall, hardworking receiver in the mix. I hope Daniel can get that extra year back.

    GO WARRIORS!!!
    BEAT USC!!!

    GO TECHIES!!!
    CAN THE SPAM!!!

  20. Shoko:

It's difficult to follow the blog rules (clear cache, cookies and history) prior to signing into the blog when there is spam that entices the weak and weary with a "free sex webcam".

Anyway, I better investigate this suspicious website and take one for the team. If you don't see me for several days, please call my wife.

  21. Shoko:

On second thought, don't call my wife. Better go covert on this mission.

  22. PolyMom:

    Good Morning!

Well after United Airlines delay of so many flights to Hawaii yesterday we finally arrived late last night. Got our little one to Punahou this morning for her first day of orientation. Then had a nice visit with Coach Chris at the Football office. Now trying to reach my girlfriend who lost her husband James Gandolfino last night. So much going on right now.

I like what I'm seeing at UH. I see good things for the Warriors.

    GO WARRIORS!
    Beat SC!

  23. d1shima:

    Great Morning All!

Everyone is always happy to see the Blog Host...he's a Happy Warrior! ;-)

  24. BigWave96744:

So is Calen's move to the Oline set in stone or could he possibly end up back as a DT?
Funny my friend who teaches at Kailua told me years ago coach Mack should move Calen to the Oline.

And you know Kailua gave us some great big nasties.

  25. PolyMom:

Not sure might be both sides of the line from what I know.
I think we have to wait for summer ball. But it's a different atmosphere there in the offices. Coaches still here were working hard and concentrating.

  26. 3-Prong:

    Go Bows!........and Go Heat!

  27. A-House:

on a very slow day like this thanks for the "spam" to keep the "numbers up" for ST

can't remember when it was this low since May 2008 or was it 2007?

there will be glory days and not so glory days - read and move on.

  28. jimmy the lock:

I keep forgetting, I need to think of something to remind me to re-stock my spam shelf. Down to my last can.

  29. jimmy the lock:

At least ST doesn't beg for posts, like that world wide ed guy on the other blog.

  30. jimmy the lock:

    Time will tell.

Every football preseason there is hype about the off-season workouts. Then reality sets in and you're still not the faster, stronger, conditioned team.

    Time will tell.

  31. jimmy the lock:

    Game 7.

Will the Heat repeat? Or will Duncan have one for the thumb?

  32. iwonderwhytheyhateme:

Was it on this blog that someone mentioned Mark Atuaia as one of the short-listed candidates to fill one of our assistant coach positions?

  33. Stephen Tsai:

Don't think it was this blog, because he was not a candidate.

  34. Stephen Tsai:

    Oh, I'm not above begging.
Like when I'm at the craps table, and I've pressed four times on 8, and I'm begging — please, please, please, roll an 8.
And, that's why I'm driving a 2000 Sentra with a driver's window that may or may not roll up on the first try.

  35. Stephen Tsai:

I can't wait for that ripe, old age when the arthritis kicks in and my fingers are locked into the big-bad-wolf grip. Then I can roll consistently.

  36. jimmy the lock:

That's a different level of begging.

  37. Shoko:

I think IT guys fixed the blog.

  38. Stephen Tsai:

Princess Leila is correct that Masifilo does bear a resemblance to Drake.

  39. Stephen Tsai:

    Shoko:
    No, that was me snip-snipping.

  40. Shoko:

Was watching the Boston news and they had live coverage of a police helicopter following Hernandez. They were saying that an arrest might be imminent.

  41. Stephen Tsai:

I think I'll apply at Super Cuts.

  42. Stephen Tsai:

I thought that was amazing that they followed him to the gas station.
So, you're not allowed to use your cell phone near a gas pump, but it's OK to have a copter hovering?

  43. A-House:

    #28:

just missed the Longs Drugs spam sale - $1.67/can or was it $1.76 - 5/visit, but I bought 10 cans to gear up for tailgating!!!

  44. Shoko:

Oh, well, the blog looks better. To me, anyway.

A Hawaiian version of Drake, perhaps.

  45. A-House:

so, besides being a talented blog host his additional duties include being a "barber"?

  46. Stephen Tsai:

I love how Drake raps about the hard way he grew up.
Is he really going to pretend he wasn't Jimmy on "DeGrassi: The Next Generation"?
    Oh, these Canadians.

  47. Stephen Tsai:

    A-House:
I have no talent at all.
But I do know how to hit the "spam" delete button.
Sometimes I'll hold off because the techies need the IP address.

  48. iwonderwhytheyhateme:

    ST,

Thanks. Maybe it was just a bloggers wish that he be put on the short list.

  49. A-House:

I past this one house at 3:53 am and a certain car is missing from the street.

I return around 5:45 am and the car is back.

    Wonder where the owner went?

  50. Stephen Tsai:

    A-House:
Are you on neighborhood watch duty again?

  51. Shoko:

I think I read somewhere there is a way to mask or hide your IP address using proxy servers. So, I don't know if banning someone's IP will work in getting rid of the spam.

  52. Buffoman:

Is it just me or do others just find it difficult to simply walk by a display of Spam musubi without giving in and buying one (or two, or three)? Or try just walking by a poke counter without saying, "okay, give half pound". Worse thing about Spam musubi, when the rice still crunchy and I no care if they load up the rice, jes make sure you cut the Spam thick.

Ahhh, Spam. Not much of a Vienna sausage guy, but love fried baloney (thick cut, of course).

  53. Shoko:

Or either A-House is the neighborhood stalker.

  54. A-House:

ST, that's better than me cause I cannot find the delete button on my keyboard; then MasaBoy says, "Pops, here it is"!

and our "techie" is trying to encourage me in taking "web" classes for our new EPIC system going "live" on 7/12/13 - they moved the start date up over a month and put pressure on us to learn the new system besides doing all our regular work.

    my reaction, yea, yea, yea!

  55. Shoko:

Spam musubi is one thing I don't miss living on the mainland. Pretty easy to make. Now poke, that's a different story.

  56. Stephen Tsai:

    Shoko:
Is it possible to make poke using fresh-water fish?

  57. A-House:

ST, I am the "honorary" block captain for security in the valley and we are keeping watch for this particular "gold" colored pick-up with engine running and no license plates or a car with the trunk lid up, engine running and driver's door open for quick get away - guy hit our cross street neighbor 2x in 3 days.

Shoko: my sneakie-peek days are over

  58. Stephen Tsai:

My former colleague Dayton Morinaga used to bring the tastiest spam musubi to our office tail-gate parties.

  59. Stephen Tsai:

I think I'd be pissed if somebody stole my phone charger or birth certificate.
The way the DMV is, if you don't have an original birth certificate you're riding TheBus.
Hmmm. I wonder how "Ferd" got his license renewed.

  60. iwonderwhytheyhateme:

    ST,

It is possible to make it with anything but most fresh water fish are on the blander side.

  61. A-House:

    ST:

but Shoko cannot get limu-ko and that was a good question - fresh water fish for poke - I'm sure 99.999999% of Hawaiians never considered fresh water fish.

One of the best sashimi I ever ate was black cod sashimi - 3 hours old - meat was firm and sweet - who would have tunk that "butter fish" would be good sashimi.

and, those buggahs are 1,200 - 1,500 feet down and we must use electric reels to haul them up - a double strike is rare and just as rare is a "yellow-tail" racker with the black cod - happened twice for me in July 2012.

  62. Shoko:

Not a big fan of fresh water fish for poke. I can get the fresh sushi grade tuna in California, but its the limu that's hard to find. And everyone knows, gotta have limu in poker or its not poke.

  63. d1shima:

    *snip-snip*

  64. A-House:

    Shoko:

what about starting a "hydroponic" system to grow limu ko using the Alaska current to bring rich nutrients to the "farm"? But, would it be cost effective?

or, shipping them on board Hawaiian Air - just figure a way to keep it fresh for days and a distribution system all along the West Coast

  65. Shoko:

A-House, that's too much work for me. My uncle from Maui once brought some up and I froze it. When it was defrosted it lost its flavor and smelled like a freezer.

Someone told be to dry it out than put it in a zip lock bag and store it in the freezer. Haven't tried it, but will ask my dad do it and mail it up here. But, like fresh tuna, nothing beats fresh limu straight from the ocean.

  66. iwonderwhytheyhateme:

    Shoko,

They have those dried poke kits that have limu in it. . Limu is seaweed/grass and like konbu I am sure it can reconstitute fine if dried correctly.

  67. SteveM:

A-House honorary block Captain for security, huh? Makes sense to me...

Reminds me of decades ago when a security guard firm had everyone dress in uniform with replica .38 pistols. Was talking to a Captain once and asked how he got to be captain so quickly. He pointed to his .38 and replied, "mine's real". :)

BTW, I don't think any firm does that anymore...don't want anyone shot by a bad guy for carrying a toy pistol. :(

...and Kekoa...you can't be a Major, so leave that .50 cal on the wall.

  68. empty:

As in Hawaii, it is not a good idea to eat freshwater fish raw because of the potential for bacteria. When I lived in Portland, that was what I always heard was don't eat the salmon raw once they came into the fresh water.

  69. 3-Prong:

I wouldn't "chance" eating fresh water fish sashimi due to the possibility of ingesting parasites from the fresh water. When we go to Alaska, we don't even eat the fresh salmon sashimi style if it enters the fresh water streams. Might be over cautious but better safe than sorry........

  70. jimmy the lock:

And that's why you shouldn't eat the bears that eat the upstream salmon.
