Richard Torres set to be GA

June 22nd, 2013
By

Former UH defensive back Richard Torres is expected to be named a graduate assistant for the Rainbow Warriors.

The hiring is expected to be finalized following the completion of UH's standard background check.

But all of Torres' qualifications can be found in newspaper and television archives. Torres, who first enrolled at UH as a 145-pound former wrestler, completed his four-year collegiate career as the 180-pound leader of the defensive secondary. He was a safety and nickelback with cornerback speed.

Torres played briefly for Georgia in an indoor football league last summer. He had a couple of tryouts with CFL teams this past spring.

If approved, Torres will be the Warriors' fourth graduate assistant. The others are Jordan Wynn and Jared Vanderbeek. Luke Matthews also is awaiting final approval as a GA.

Torres' father is Reggie Torres, Kahuku's head coach.

Hawaii-Oregon St. road game Sept. 7

is anyone interested in a group ticket(s) for Hawaii fans only; I am trying to get the best sideline seats behind our team as close as possible. Price will be $42.

I need to know by July 1; as I am getting first preference as a group before they start selling individual tickets to the public in Aug.

    email me at: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

So far we got 25 Hawaii fans in our group; including the family of one of the players from Maui.

Remember I will get the best seats available (I will try for sideline as close to our team as possible); and I will get first choice on July 1; before they start selling to the general public in August.

Plan to attend a UH football away game this year? (even tentatively)

Post here or email me for inclusion in the Tsai-ko Away Game and Logistics (a.k.a. "get-together Planner") page at:

    the "news"

" The University of Hawaii athletic department expects to post a $3.3 million annual deficit, a school record, when the books close on the current fiscal season. "

Ok, we know where we're at - now gotta fix the problem.

  18. gobows:

wonder why Richard didn't get on a cfl team, bet he's a better baller than most of the db's up north.

  19. gobows:

this is nuts...check out the photo of aaron hernandez's dog house:

    https://twitter.com/KevinGArmstrong/status/348506820089884672/photo/1

investigators searched his house and his dog's house...no sight of the dog though.

  20. Hilo-Warrior:

Good afternoon from San Antonio. But ya ST Damien is a very humble guy. The coaches lucked out in a player that will listen and go beyond what is expected of him.

  21. jkjones:

Richard Torres GA makes sense for all the obvious reasons--congrads and best wishes.

  22. gobows:

aaron hernandez is/or will be sued for allegedly shooting another person in the face in february.

  23. Stephen Tsai:

I think the budget story was written to make it appear that football had put UH into the red. With pay-per-view, student fees, etc., football did good enough.
The question is: How did UH spend the other $28.7 million?

  24. Stephen Tsai:

Not sure about the rest of you, but if I'm a dollar overdrawn, I get a letter from First Hawaiian Bank (in addition to a $28 overdraft penalty).
Is there some point, say, after going $1 million in the red, somebody says: "Hmmm. How about we turn off the A/C?"

  25. Stephen Tsai:

Actually, there have been some small-scale cutbacks. For instance, Panda Travel still is in charge of booking flights. But the hotel arrangements are now made by each team.

  26. gobows:

    #25
at least there are cheap motels in cali

  27. A-House:

I read the article quickly - is the projected $3.3 million shortfall included in the $13 million forgiveness by upper campus?

or, is Ben Jay really going to start the 2013 fiscal year way behind the 8 ball?

  28. A-House:

Hooray for Richard Torres as a GA!!!!!!!!!

    work with the defensive secondary?

how many more Kahuku and Punahou players available for 2014? will Punahou outgun St Louis behind Kahuku for the most number of Warrior players on roster? that would be a switch.

  29. wafan:

Will we make it to 100? Heck, will we make it to 50?!?!

  30. RainboWarrior:

I live in North Carolina now and plan to go to the Navy Game. Does anyone know when UH will be selling tickets? I saw that Navy is already selling individual tickets to the game.

  31. tommui:

    #29 WAFAN

Are we going to get a mess of spam? If so, 100 is also possible!

  32. Warrior Dave:

    Rainbow Warrior,

Contact the UH ticket office for information. I believe you are very early in your inquiry. Look forward to having your support at the game.

  33. Dennis Halloran:

Getting my Football fix with Pac 12 networks 60 minute football shows all afternoon on Saturday
OC All Star game coming Friday

  34. Matt:

    SteveM,

I will be attending the Nevada and UNLV games. If my work schedule allows, I may try to make the Navy game as well. I only have one year left in Petaluma before I head back afloat, so I plan on taking advantage of it.

  35. gobows:

    50

  36. gobows:

lets see the books for the UH's general fund first before worrying about $3.3 million.

  37. SteveM:

RainboWarrior -- what city do you reside in North Carolina?
Info for my mainland/international Tsai-ko listing at:
    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/mainintpost.html

Matt -- great to hear from you again! Thanks for the info. Please send me your email addy since I don't think any of the others attending Navy have yours. I will send contact info to everyone going to a given game--around a week before, so they can optionally contact each other. stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com

  38. 3-Prong:

You tell um gobows! That's only a paper loss! With all that the athletic dept contributes in income that it does not get credit for,........we're probably in the black.

  39. Stephen Tsai:

Upper Campus is going to pay off this deficit, too, so there is no debt.

  40. PolyMom:

Gotta ask...we went to Ala Moana today for the first time in 3 years. Do any local people shop at Ala Moana anymore? Wow!!! It was just designer stores, high end merchandise. I am shocked!!! But the most irritating thing was most of the high end boutiques would not even answer a question if you were not a Japanese tourist. Do they think only the tourist should shop in their stores?

It's a real shame. And all I wanted to do was go to the Slipper House. So embarrassed as I hyped this store to the hubby. And the store was gone. Sad.

Is Pearlridge a better place to go find local things?

  41. tommui:

41 PolyMom: Liberty House probably went out of business when they started to cater more to the tourist than the locals. And when the recession hit and the tourist didn't come in great numbers, LH couldn't retreat fast enough

  42. SteveM:

    Bon Voyage to M/M Lopaka43!

At this moment, they are probably boarding one of the 2nd largest cruise ships in the world--and almost directly opposite us in the world: Rome! Royal Caribbean's mega-ship, the Voyager of the Seas!

  43. maddog50:

There will be at least 20 or so mature "Warriors" at the OSU game. All played in the late 60's and early 70's. All looking forward to an exciting season----

  44. Shoko:

    Welcome back, Torres!

Wonder if Moniz is still with the Georgia force, or did the organization go belly up.

    Research time...
